Take a Tour of the Shark Tank at Golden Nugget Las Vegas

If you’re looking for something fun and unique to do in downtown Las Vegas, the shark tank at Golden Nugget has got you covered.

Visitors can get a behind-the-scenes look at The Tank , the Golden Nugget’s 200,000-gallon shark aquarium.

Golden Nugget pool

Lots of Vegas visitors have seen the massive shark tank at Golden Nugget, and have taken a ride through  (yes, through) the shark tank down its popular water slide (see below).

But there’s a whole other world that happens out of sight of the public. That’s where the Golden Nugget’s shark tank tour comes in.

Golden Nugget Pool3-1

On the shark tank tour, one of the Golden Nugget’s marine biologists shows guests what goes into ensuring the aquarium’s sharks and other denizens are happy and healthy. And fed.

Shark tank Tour

Nicole gave us our tour, and she was like a walking encyclopedia (those things people used before the Internet) about shark behavior, including feeding and mating. We asked lots of questions about the whole shark mating thing, and Nicole didn’t blush even once. Nor did she call security. We were duly impressed.

One of the highlights of our tour was when our guide described how mating happens in the shark community given sharks do not, typically, have hands. We’d say more, but that’s what YouTube is for, folks. And don’t even get us started on the whole intrauterine cannibalism thing.

Mesh Shark Suit

The Tank tour provides a rare glimpse into the world of a one-of-a-kind Las Vegas attraction.

The tank boasts five species of sharks, including four black-tipped sharks, three Tiger sharks (they can grow to be 350 pounds), four sandbar sharks, two zebra sharks and two nurse sharks.

Shark Tank Tour 3

The aquarium also contains hundreds of other, we presume very nervous, exotic fish. Just kidding. Sharks, it turns out, don’t really eat all that much, and the sharks at The Tank are so well-fed, disappearances of other tank inhabitants are relatively rare.

Thankfully, the information provided during the shark tank tour never gets too technical for us non-biologists.

About as technical as our tour got was Nicole trying to explain sharks having “ampullae of Lorenzini.” Those are special sensing organs, or electroreceptors. These organs help sharks sense electric fields in the water. All living things create an electrical field with their muscle contractions, so this ability comes in handy when sharks get the drunchies.

Tank Tour Nicole

Sharks also have something called a “lateral line,” sense organs used to detect vibration in the surrounding water. Truly fascinating stuff.

If the science and nature facts aren’t your thing, there’s also a show-and-tell portion where you get an actual shark’s tooth.

Shark Tooth

It’s a blast getting a look at parts of the aquarium operation the public rarely sees.

For example, guests get to see the unbelievably complex filtration system used in the aquarium, and also get to see where the Golden Nugget team prepares treats for the sharks.

Shark Tank Tour 2

The team members at The Tank are clearly passionate about educating the public about their sharks, as well as dispelling myths about sharks.

For example, there are very few humans harmed by sharks in a given year (about five attacks a year result in death), but it’s estimated 100 million sharks are killed by humans each year. That’s not a typo. Just stop eating shark fin soup, already, people.

After you finish your shark tank tour, you’ll be able to impress your friends and co-workers with your ample knowledge of all things shark. You’ll be the life of any party with lines like, “The term zebra shark is a misnomer given the fact they’re spotted, not striped! From now on, look for the five longitudinal ridges on a cylindrical body.” (Note: Please use your new knowledge with discretion if you ever want to be invited to a party again.)

The folks who oversee The Tank, by the way, also take care of the hotel’s other huge aquarium at The Chart House .

Chart House Aquarium

The Tank tour at Golden Nugget costs $50, and tours take place at 1:30 p.m. each Wednesday and Sunday.

Here’s more information about the Tank tour, another great thing to do when you’re in downtown Las Vegas. Enjoy more photos of the shark tank tour at Golden Nugget Las Vegas .

Hi there, does anyone know if you can use the tank slide without staying at the golden nugget

That’s a yes, but there’s a charge. Tickets can be purchased at the hotel’s box office, they start at $15 and give access to the slide and pool area for the day.

what all do you get to do with $15 and u mentioned $15 and up so u no what else u can do for what prices thankx

The $15 tickets gets you into the pool area. The slide is included as part of the pool experience. Hope that helps!

Is there a height or age requirement for kids in order to go down Pool slide that goes thru the shark tank?

From what we understand, sliders must be at least four feet tall, no age requirement.

HI! I have a question regarding service dogs, do you happen to know if they are allowed in the pool area as long as he/she is on its own towel and staying at the owner’s side? My little brother loves sharks and he does have a service dog that helps keep him calm (Autism Awareness Service dog)

That’s a “yes.” You can contact Golden Nugget for specifics.

Try something new in Las Vegas. First up: A behind-the-scenes tour at the T-Mobile Arena

You think you know Las Vegas? New tours take you behind the scenes at the city’s new arena or on an ultimate steakhouse adventure. Here are four tours that offer different ways to see in the city.

1. The Neon Museum

The Neon Museum isn’t new, but it does offer a new tour option. Now visitors may wander through the popular museum at their own pace.

In the past, visitors to the Boneyard, the name for the downtown museum’s primary repository of vintage signs, were required to take scheduled tours.

Now, to keep pace with demand, the museum has implemented self-guided daytime tours. Guests can linger as long as they like past dozens of pieces of history. Museum interpreters are posted at various spots to answer questions.

9 places on the Vegas Strip where you can find free parking »

Tickets vary in price depending on the experience. General admission, required for self-guided tours between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., costs $19 for adults and $15 for youth ages 7 to 17. You can still take guided tours, of course. They begin at 6 p.m. and cost $28 for adults and $24 for youth.

Info: The Neon Museum , (702) 387-6366

2. Food tours

Former waiter Donald Contursi created Lip Smacking Foodie Tours to take people on food-centric journeys around Las Vegas. He continues to add to his list of tours , but each includes stops at several restaurants.

Prices vary considerably, from $125 for the Afternoon Culinary Experience , a 2.5-hour stroll to four eateries, to $799 for his newest offering: the Ultimate Steakhouse Tour .

From USDA prime to Japanese Waygu A5, this exclusive tour gives guests the chance to indulge at three high-end restaurants: Bazaar Meat , the Las Vegas outpost of Chef José Andrés at the SLS ; Scotch 80 Prime , the new steakhouse at Palms ; and Jean Georges Steakhouse , Jean Georges Vongerichten ’s well-reviewed restaurant at Aria . While at Aria, there’s also a visit to Sage for a customized liquor tasting.

Accompanied by a guide, guests on the steakhouse tour are shuttled between restaurants in luxury vehicles. At each location, they are seated without waiting in line. The chefs then come to the tables to carve, plate and garnish their dishes. Each course is paired with a fine wine.

Info and reservations: Lip Smacking Foodie Tours , (888) 681-4388

3. T-Mobile Arena tour

Since it opened in April 2016, T-Mobile Arena has drawn crowds for everything from boxing matches to big-name concerts to pro hockey action, including the 2018 Stanley Cup. Now visitors can peer behind the curtain to learn what goes on backstage at the award-winning arena. Guides share fun facts and surprising statistics as guests move about the 20,000-seat arena.

The tours, which began July 30, are offered Monday and Thursday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets cost $25.

4. Photography tours

Photo Tours Vegas puts participants not only behind the lens, but in front of the lens too. Given its affiliation with a wedding planning company, the company hosts plenty of bachelor and bachelorette parties as well as newlyweds.

That said, Photo Tours also offers scenic tours in limos and 15-passenger party buses to lesser-visited destinations such as the Las Vegas Arts District , Springs Preserve and Valley of Fire State Park .

Prices are based on the experience chosen.
