Rauw Alejandro

Last week, Billboard revealed its year-end Boxscore charts , ranking the top tours, venues and promoters of 2023. That coverage included analysis of the new wave of genre diverse artists crashing stadium stages, and in turn, our charts. This week, we are breaking down the year’s biggest tours, genre by genre . Today, we begin with Latin.

Throughout the 2010s, Latin acts – here, defined as artists who primarily perform in Spanish – were consistently supporting players on the Boxscore charts. Strong supporting players, with generally a combined 3-6% share of the yearly top 100 tours’ total gross, but supporting, nonetheless. But as the many subgenres that comprise Latin music’s growing global footprint gained international recognition and popularity, acts from Puerto Rico, Colombia, Mexico and more returned from the pandemic with a strengthened touring audience.

Latin’s top-100 share rose from 5.3% in 2019 to 12.1% in 2022. That was thanks, in large part, to Bad Bunny ’s record-breaking year atop the year-end Top Tours chart, plus fumes from Daddy Yankee ’s farewell tour. In 2023, the genre dips to 11.5% in 2023. But in the absence of Bad Bunny’s $373.5 million from last year, Latin’s deepening bench picked up the slack to remain relatively steady, signaling the potential for even more growth in the years to come.

While reggaetón and pop acts continued to power Latin touring, 2023 marked the rise of regional Mexican music, on streaming services and on stages. Eslabon Armado , Fuerza Regida and Peso Pluma conquered Billboard ’s global charts , while those acts, Grupo Firme and others were selling out arenas across the U.S. and Central America.

Scroll to check out the top 10 highest grossing tours by Latin artists, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. All reported shows worldwide between Nov. 1, 2022 – Sept. 30, 2023 are eligible.

Carin León

$39.5M / 284K tickets / 29 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 64

The Mexican singer-songwriter played most of his reported shows in the U.S., plus a show with more than 9,000 fans at Mexico City’s Auditorio Nacional. His biggest concert was a Sept. 16 date at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, which grossed $2.4 million from 13,359 tickets sold.

Grupo Firme

Grupo Firme

$48.1M / 451K tickets / 30 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 50

For the third year in a row, Grupo Firme is among the 10 biggest Latin touring acts. Up 66% from the band’s 2022 gross, the ensemble mixed U.S. arenas with Latin American venues, earning $7.5 million from a string of five shows in El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

Luis Miguel

Luis Miguel

$48.7M / 306K tickets / 29 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 48

Luis Miguel’s 2023 tour began late in the Boxscore tracking period but made up for it with robust runs in South America. First, there was 10 shows at Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires, bringing in $13.9 million from 105,000 tickets. Then, another 10 at the Movistar Arena in Santiago, Chile, adding $14.3 million and 122,000 tickets.

Peso Pluma

$48.8M / 372K tickets / 39 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 47

Peso Pluma went from zero to 60 in 2023. His first-ever reported Boxscore was an April 8 concert at the Toyota Center in Ontario, Calif., where he grossed $988K and sold over 8,000 tickets. Already selling out arenas, his touring business grew from there, finishing the 2023 tracking period with two $2M shows in Hidalgo, Texas, and Chula Vista, Calif.

Rauw Alejandro

Rauw Alejandro

$50.1M / 551K tickets / 36 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 46

Alejandro proved himself as a sell-out arena star in 2023, with a full U.S. tour that broke 15,000 tickets in Miami, Brooklyn, San Jose and many more. But the real trick was leveling up to a stadium, with more than 58,000 tickets sold at Mexico City’s Foro Sol.

Romeo Santos

Romeo Santos

$59.8M / 567K tickets / 32 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 35

A veteran Boxscore star, Santos fluctuated between arenas and stadiums, peaking in South America with nine shows in Santiago, Chile; in North America with a date at Citi Fields in Queens, New York; and in Europe with four performances at Madrid’s WiZink Center.

Bad Bunny

$67.9M / 719K tickets / 18 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 28

After being the biggest touring act of 2022 regardless of genre, Bad Bunny still had more gas in the tank. The last month and a half of World’s Hottest Tour played out at the beginning of the ’23 tracking period. Last November and December, he breezed through stadiums in Latin America, wrapping with two shows in Monterrey and two in Mexico City.

Daddy Yankee

Daddy Yankee

$72.5M / 773K tickets / 29 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 27

The final dates of Daddy Yankee’s farewell tour land him at No. 3 on this year’s Latin recap, after taking the No. 2 spot in 2022. His long goodbye culminated with a $23.6M run at Mexico City’s Foro Sol, selling more than 300,000 tickets over five nights.

RBD

$86.7M / 353K tickets / 18 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 21

RBD’s comeback tour began on Aug. 25, which means that its year-end totals are only the beginning of the trek’s overall footprint. Doubling up in New York, Miami and more, the tour is barreling toward becoming the second tour by a Latin artist to gross more than $200 million, following Bad Bunny’s stadium run from last year.

Karol G

$146.9M / 843K tickets / 19 shows

All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 11

Atop a heap of male acts, Karol G reigns supreme among all Latin tours in 2023. The Manana Sera Bonito Tour grossed $138.4 million. Added to the last date of her 2022 tour, plus a one-off three-night run at San Juan’s Hiram Bithorn Stadium, her $147M year crystalizes her as a sold-out stadium star.

2023 In Review: 5 Trends That Defined Latin Music

2023 was a transformative year for Latin music: Música mexicana expanded globally; urbano music continued its dominance and innovative sounds broke boundaries. Read on for five trends showcasing the breadth of Latin music's influence.

2022 was the year of Rosalía ’s Motomami and Bad Bunny ’s Un Verano Sin Ti — two groundbreaking albums that expanded both the artistic scope and mainstream appeal of Latin music. How do you top that?

As it turns out, 2023 had a number of surprises in store: the emergence of música mexicana on an international scale, but also the further globalization of Latin sounds and new developments in urbano music, which continues to gain in influence and sophistication. It was also a particularly prolific year — with hundreds of singles, EPs and albums expanding the scope of Latin across genres and formats.

Here are some of the notable trends that emerged during the past 12 months.

Finally, Música Mexicana Gets The Chance To Shine

Reggaetón and urbano were at the forefront of the Latin music tsunami that began to take hold of the entire planet a good three years ago. During that time, many insiders pondered if the huge field of so-called regional Mexican music would ever enjoy such levels of exposure. Turns out there was nothing regional about it.

Far from stagnating, the genre evolved with the rise of the sparse, melancholy sound known as sad sierreño, and the swagger of hip-hop informing the zeitgeist of young artists like Natanael Cano and Junior H.

2023 will be forever remembered as the year when música mexicana connected with the world at large, and it happened mostly through one song: " Ella Baila Sola ," the collaboration between Jalisco singer Peso Pluma and Cali group Eslabón Armado — a tune whose spiraling groove is so buoyant and infectious, it transcends borders. The subversive duet of Bad Bunny and Grupo Frontera on mega-hit "un x100to" didn’t hurt either, and the movement gained strength with Peso Pluma’s excellent third LP, as well as the talents of young stars such as Fuerza Regida, Gabito Ballesteros and Yahritza y Su Esencia .

When It Comes To Latin Rock, Argentina Is Still At The Forefront

From Charly García and Luis Alberto Spinetta to Soda Stereo and Babasónicos, Argentina boasts a fierce tradition for generating legendary rock albums. Even though the South American nation has embraced the present with such urbano stars as Bizarrap , Duki and Nicki Nicole, there will always be a place of honor reserved for good old fashioned rock’n’roll in Argentina’s clubs and recording studios.

2023 was no exception. Hailing from the city of La Plata, Él Mató a un Policía Motorizado released Súper Terror . Their first full length album since 2017's La Síntesis O’Konor , the new LP includes atmospheric ballads like the gorgeous "Medalla de Oro." Another top contender is Tripolar , the third effort by Mendoza indie darlings Usted Señalemelo.

Also of note: Lo Más Cercano a Caer , the stunning debut by Nenagenix. Fronted by singer Martina Sampietro, the band has dreamed up a ferocious collection of songs with inspired touches of grunge and shoegaze.

Pop Stardom Is A Young Artist’s Game…

Popular music has always reflected the combustion and adrenaline of youth, but the immediacy of the digital era has heightened this fact. It seems that the transition from self-taught teens uploading their demos in TikTok to fully fledged stars performing at Coachella has become even more rapid.

Some of the most successful Latin artists climbing the 2023 charts have had only a couple of years to transition into pop icon status — and the vulnerability of their emotional state is often expressed in their music. From the reggaetón-fueled erotic narratives of 21 year-old Madrid rapper Quevedo ("PUNTO G") to the bachata-pop warmth of 19 year-old Mexican/American DannyLux ("MI HOGAR," with maye) and the confessional urbano narratives of 22-year-old Argentine vocalist Tiago PZK (the TINI duet "Me Enteré"), many young artists found the global platform where they could freely express their longings and dreams.

...But The Veterans Have Still Plenty To Say

Years of accolades have not dimmed the creative vision of veteran Latin artists. In the case of Juanes , a marital crisis during the pandemic inspired Vida Cotidiana — arguably the Colombian singer’s best album to date. Just listen to the gritty guitar textures of the majestic "Gris" and the spiraling Afro lines of "Cecilia," a sun-is-shining-again duet with Juan Luis Guerra. Vida Cotidiana is nominated for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album alongside Cabra's MARTÍNEZ , Leche De Tigre by Diamante Eléctrico , Natalia Lafourcade 's De Todas Las Flores and EADDA9223 by Fito Paez .

At 46, Shakira finds herself at the top of her game, with major pop culture moments like her Bizarrap collaboration — the most epic revenge song of the year and a Latin GRAMMY winner — and the jagged edges of "TQG," her duet with KAROL G .

Having developed a tradition of recording solo excursions in Paris, Zoé frontman León Larregui explored his hazy psychedelic mystique on PRISMARAMA , the Mexican singer’s excellent — and first self-produced — third outing.

The Urbano Groove May Never Run Out Of Steam

You may think that global audiences would have tired of the ubiquitous reggaetón beat. But the music of Puerto Rico — just like traditional salsa in the ‘70s – has a gravitas that rewards longer attention spans. Fittingly for a genre known for its prolific work ethic, some of the biggest names in urbano released albums in 2023, and none of them disappoint.

One listen to the refined melody of "MÓNACO" — like a reggaetón take on a James Bond theme — is enough to realize that Bad Bunny’s creative streak hasn’t slowed down since he reimagined the Latin pop atlas with Un Verano Sin Ti . Known for his honeyed dance hits, Ozuna put out an EP ( Afro ) and an album ( Cosmo ), including the synth-pop magic of "Vocation," with producer David Guetta .

Last but not least, KAROL G’s MAÑANA SERÁ BONITO demonstrates on luminous tracks like "PROVENZA" and "CAIRO" that her work with fellow Colombian producer Ovy on the Drums is one of the defining artistic partnerships of the decade. MAÑANA is nominated for Best Música Urbana Album at the 2024 GRAMMYs alongside Rauw Alejandro 's SATURNO and Tainy's DATA.

Shakira's Road To 'Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran': How Overcoming A Breakup Opened A New Chapter In Her Artistry

Shakira's first album in seven years is out March 22, and very much of the moment with glossy Latin pop, reggaeton, bachata and corrido. The GRAMMY winner's path to this new chapter was long, filled with professional changes and heartbreak.

When Shakira’s "Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53" was released in January of 2023; its success seemed like a freak incident, explainable as a perfect but isolated storm.

Their virulently catchy track — which happens to spill scalding tea on her breakup with retired Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué —  set streaming records and took home a Latin GRAMMY for Song Of The Year . Today, the song's success looks more like the first crashing wave of a massive comeback for Shakira .

The three-time GRAMMY winner followed her Bzrp Session with another hit single, "TQG," collaborating with Karol G . That song went to No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, and the duo cleaned up at the Latin GRAMMYs.

In hindsight, all of this was a mere preamble to the announcement of Shakira's Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women Don't Cry Anymore), due March 22. The album will be her first in seven years, but the sound is very much of the moment, leaning into a high-gloss urban Latin pop sound that delves in reggaeton, bachata and corrido.

The album is no comeback. With a star as big as Shakira — one who performed at the Super Bowl in 2020 and had her own exhibit at the GRAMMY Museum — it's hard to make the case that she ever left the public eye. Yet the Colombian superstar has put out only a trickle of singles since 2017, when she released her GRAMMY-winning album El Dorado . Prior to the BZRP session, her last major hits were in 2016 with "La Bicicleta," a collaboration with Carlos Vives , and "Chantaje," featuring Maluma , which went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs.

It’s impossible to talk about this period of retreat, or her new album, without talking about the personal upheavals Shakira has gone through in recent years. In June of 2022, Shakira and Gerard Piqué, with whom she has two sons, publicly announced the end of their 11 year relationship. Starting with 2022’s "Monotonía," featuring Ozuna, nearly every song she has released  since then deals directly with the split and the emotional turmoil she has felt because of it.

The singer and songwriter herself is not shying away from the fact that her music has been a therapeutic outlet. "I feel like in this moment of my life, which is probably one of the most difficult, darkest hours of my life, music has brought light," she told Elle in 2022.

Case in point: her Bizarrap session. "Someone should have taken my photo the day I worked on the 'Bizarrap Session 53,' a before and after. Because I went into the studio one way and left in a completely different way," Shakira told Mexican television channel Televisa. "He gave me this space, this opportunity to let it out and it really was a huge release, necessary for my own healing, for my own recovery process."

That feeling of catharsis continued in her work on Las Mujeres . "Making this body of work has been an alchemical process. While writing each song I was rebuilding myself. While singing them, my tears transformed into diamonds, and my vulnerability into strength," the artist said in a statement on Instagram .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Shakira (@shakira)

Shakira is styling the album as a testament to resilience in the face of adversity, tapping into an understanding that her experiences have a broad resonance. While accepting Billboard’s 2023 Woman Of The Year award, Shakira discussed her "year of seismic change."

"I've felt more than ever — and very personally — what it is to be a woman," she said. "It's been a year where I've realized we women are stronger than we think, braver than we believed, more independent than we were taught to be."

Indeed, with strength and bravery, Shakira proceeded to channel her individual hurt into a message of universal empowerment. Ahead of her album release, she’s even more explicit about the details of her separation and the impact the relationship had on her career. "For a long time I put my career on hold, to be next to Gerard, so he could play football. There was a lot of sacrifice for love," recently told The Sunday Times .

As she told Billboard for her 2023 cover story , settling down in Barcelona with Piqué and their two children, far from music industry centers, made it difficult for her to work. "It was complicated logistically to get a collaborator there. I had to wait for agendas to coincide or for someone to deign to come," she explained.

Shakira has since relocated to Miami, a location that played a major role in making her new album possible.

One of the hallmarks of a true pop star is the ability to evolve with the culture without losing their identity. Over decades, and with each release, Shakira has broken a barrier or risen above an obstacle to succeed beyond expectations – whether it’s leading the first Spanish-language broadcast on MTV with her 2000 "Unplugged" concert, or learning English to write her own crossover pop debut. Each move has felt authentic.

It is not an easy task, but Shakira accomplishes this alchemy beautifully every few album cycles, starting with her debut as an alt-leaning, brunette singer/songwriter in the mid '90s. At the turn of the millennium, she made the jump to international fame with a cascade of golden curls and Laundry Service , the English-language album that capitalized on the first wave of crossover Latin pop. She closed out the decade in a whirl of high-gloss dance pop with the Pharell produced She Wolf . Along the way, there was one platinum selling album after another and the No. 1 hit "Hips Don’t Lie," among several Top 10 singles, setting the stage for her to blaze through much of the 2010s.

Shakira is well-aware of how hard she has had to work even after crossover success.

In 2019, she told Billboard , "This whole new world had opened up to me, and with it came so many great opportunities, but I continued to pursue impossible goals such as making a song like 'Hips Don’t Lie,' for example—that had a Colombian cumbia and a mention of Barranquilla in the middle of it—play on American radio. I remember I said to [then Sony Music Chairman] Donny Ienner, ‘You have to trust me on this one. This is going to happen, this song is going to blow up.’"

With El Dorado , she caught the second wave of Latin pop crossover, the one tipped off by Luis Fonsi’s now-infamous 2017 earworm "Despacito." El Dorado , is one of Shakira’s more Latin leaning albums in the long history of her bicultural and bilingual music career. The songs are sung largely in Spanish and her choice of features on the album are almost entirely Latin pop and reggaeton artists: Maluma, Nicky Jam, Prince Royce and Carlos Vives. The album's May 2017 release coincided with a rising global interest in reggaeton.

Shakira wasn’t following a trend; she was just in touch with the moment as usual. She released "Chantaje" months before "Despacito," and "Bicicleta," her song with Carlos Vives, which combines elements of reggaeton and vallenato, came out in 2016.

With the continued mainstream global success of Latin artists, Shakira may no longer see a need to release an English-language album for every album in her mother tongue. Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran breaks with tradition in that it is her second Spanish-language album in a row. It's also loaded with features from the world of Latin music, including Ozuna, Rauw Alejandro, Manuel Turizo, and Karol G. The moment could not be better for an album that explores forward looking pop reggaeton, assisted by some of the brightest young stars in the genre.

If the past is any indicator, this era is going to be another step up for the artist. Beyond the album release, Shakira is teasing another tour. As she told Billboard , "I think this will be the tour of my life. I’m very excited. Just think, I had my foot on the brakes. Now I’m pressing on the accelerator — hard."

Run The World: How Shakira Became One Of The Most Influential Female Artists Of The 21st Century

In celebration of Women's History Month — and Shakira's new album, 'Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran' — take a journey through the Colombian superstar's monumental career, from making global smashes to empowering women worldwide.

Over the course of nearly four decades, Shakira — born Shakira Isabel Mebarak in Barranquilla, Colombia — has become the best-selling Latin female artist of all-time, and in turn one of the most influential female artists of her time.

In honor of Women's History Month, revisit a few of the massive moments in her career that paved the way for the international market of other Latin artists.

She famously invited Latin flow to the Western music industry with her global breakthrough album, 2001's Laundry Service . Five years later, she broke the record for the most-played pop song in a week with "Hips Don't Lie."

Since the beginning, Shakira has used her powerful performances to uplift other women. Her lyrics often emphasize themes of self-reliance, independence, and female strength, most notably in her 2009 hit, "She Wolf."

More than three decades into her career, Shakira is still empowering women with more history-making feats. In 2020, she co-headlined the Super Bowl LIV halftime show alongside Jennifer Lopez , celebrating Latin culture in front of more than 100 million viewers; it's now the most-watched halftime show on YouTube, with more than 308 million views as of press time.

Now, at 47, Shakira continues to use her voice to encourage women to shape their own path, as a mother of two balancing her colossal career. Her forthcoming twelfth studio album — Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran , which translates to "Women No Longer Cry" — is a testament to that.

In celebration of Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran 's March 22 arrival and Women's History Month, press play on the video above to learn more about Shakira's achievements. Check back to GRAMMY.com for more new episodes of Run The World.

Ovy on the Drums poses at the 2023 Latin GRAMMYs

Producer Ovy On The Drums Talks New EP With Myke Towers & The Indescribable Chemistry Of Working With Karol G

"I just wanted to make some good music with a well chosen set of guest artists, and let the beats speak for themselves," Ovy on the Drums says of his new EP with Myke Towers.

When Mañana Será Bonito , the fourth studio album by Karol G , came out in February 2023, its release had been preceded by two momentous hit singles that changed the face of Latin music.

Panoramic in scope, slick and airy, but also imbued with an intense and lyrical emotional depth, the songs "Provenza" and "Cairo" combined pop, reggaetón and an alternative edge with panache, and confirmed the Colombian singer/songwriter as one of the biggest pop stars in the planet . Mañana Será Bonito would go on to win Latin GRAMMYs for Album Of The Year and Best Urban Music Album, as well as her first-ever GRAMMY for Best Música Urbana Album in 2024.

Karol G wasn’t alone in these accomplishments. Most of the songs on the album were helmed by her longtime producer, Ovy on the Drums . Like Karol herself, 33 year-old Daniel Echavarría Oviedo hails from Medellín. The pair started working together at the very beginning of their careers, and Ovy was behind the haute couture sonics of "Tusa," the 2019 collaboration with Nicki Minaj that first established Karol as a major contender in Latin pop.

"There is a chemistry when we work together that I cannot quite describe with words,"  Ovy says over Zoom from his home in Florida. It’s a weekday morning, and he sits by his keyboard producing station; from time to time, he will play imaginary chords as he searches for the right words for an answer. His attitude remains humble throughout the conversation — even after significant success and a triumphant world tour, where he accompanied Karol on most concert dates.

"I still remember the specific moment when I asked her if she would let me do production work with her," he tells GRAMMY.com. "We keep talking whenever we’re in the studio. She is very clear in her direction; ‘I want this song to sound like that,’ or, ‘Give it another spin and see if we can make it better.’"

Ovy has since been inspired to branch out into different challenges. The latest one is Cassette 01 ,  a six-song EP with Puerto Rican A-list rapper Myke Towers . The EP is the first in a series of cassette-themed mixtapes that will include a different collaborator on each new installment. "The concept of releasing cassette-themed EPs in the year 2024 is really exciting to me," Ovy says. "It’s linked to the history of pop music, and the way we consume songs."

Known for high-voltage, sexed-up urbano anthems like "La Playa" (2020) and "LALA" (2023), Towers adds his imprint to the songs, but Ovy’s futuristic aesthetic is all over the EP. "It’s true that the loop in the beginning has my personal touch," Ovy says with a laugh when I point out that the intro to "AMOR NARCÓTICO" is trademark Ovy. "Sometimes people tell me that a song has that unique touch of mine, and it really seems unbelievable to me when I hear it."

On "BELLAQUERÍA," he mixes synth patches with real riffs performed by his longtime guitar player; the contrast between organic and digitized is prevalent in his stylistic panoply. And his trademark battle call — the almost dub-like cry of "O-O-O-vy on the Drumsss" is the seal of distinction that pops up in every single production.

Ovy On The Drums

Ovy on the Drums and Myke Towers┃SEBA

Musically speaking, Colombia sits on a highly strategic place: next door to the fertile Caribbean islands where reggae, salsa, merengue and calypso originated — but also close enough to the airwaves of mainstream American pop. Growing up, Ovy listened to a bit of everything, and gravitated naturally to lush records with majestic grooves.

"I loved Bob Marley as a kid," he says. "At home, of course, they would play a lot of salsa at parties, and hits of the time like 'Mayonesa' [a tropi-pop smash by Uruguayan band Chocolate.] I was also crazy about Modern Talking’s ‘Brother Louie’ and the Pet Shop Boys ’ ‘Go West.’ Those are the songs that defined my childhood."

In the meantime, he continues employing FL Studio — the same producing software that he used at the very beginning of his journey.

"I’ll never stop using it," he promises. "I just can’t see myself on another platform. I used to dream about meeting the software creators, and now they follow me on Instagram and gave me every available plug-in. I’ve been producing music for the past 11 years, and I think I only know a good half of everything there is to learn on FL."

Collaborating with other high-profile artists and finishing up a promised solo album are high on Ovy's priority list.

"At the beginning, I was trying to turn my solo project into a conceptual work — but that’s easier said than done," he admits. "In the end, I realized that I just wanted to make some good music with a well chosen set of guest artists, and let the beats speak for themselves. I’d say my solo album is about 50 percent done at this point."

Karol G recently released "CONTIGO," a Euro-leaning, pop-EDM single with Tiësto . It remains to be seen if the diva will rely as tightly on her usual partner in crime as she begins work on her upcoming fifth album.

"When she had some free time off touring, I happened to be busy with the CASSETTE project," Ovy says. "Since then, we connected again and have been recording a bunch of songs. But I can’t really tell what will happen on the next album. And I think it’s good that Karol is collaborating with other producers and composers, searching for different avenues and sounds. We’re definitely on the same page in allowing things to happen the way they are supposed to."

He pauses for a moment, then adds with an extra wave of enthusiasm:

"I will always be there for her. Our common objective hasn’t really changed. We must always work hard, and come up with cool new songs."

Puerto Rican reggaetonero Bad Bunny made history several times in 2023. From the start when he was named the first Spanish-language artist to headline Coachella to when he opened the Grammy Awards with a performance of “El Apagon”, el Conejo Malo has been a nonstop force this year. On top of performing at the Grammys, he also took home his third Grammy Award for Best Música Urbana Album for his quintessential album, Un Verano Sin Ti . That album alone brought much critical acclaim and accolades to the rapper, being the first Spanish-language album to be nominated for the Album of the Year Award since the Grammys first launched as well as becoming Spotify’s most-streamed album of 2023 and of all time 15 billion streams. His latest album, Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana , is also holding its own having debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 Albums chart and becoming the most-streamed album in a single day so far in 2023 on Spotify.

2023 marks an important year for reggaeton legend, Daddy Yankee. The Puerto Rican reggaetonero officially retired at 46 years old following a long and successful career as one of the pioneers of reggaeton and one of the voices responsible for its globalization with his hit “Gasolina”. Yankee went on his farewell tour following his last record Legendaddy which culminated in his concert “La Meta” in Puerto Rico. The sensation that is “Gasolina” was also added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress this year, the first reggaeton song to be added. This historic moment makes the legend’s last year in music that much more meaningful.

While not completely new to the industry—having been nominated fo r Producer of the Year at the 2021 Latin Grammys— Bizarrap’s presence exploded with his popular collaborations with big name Latin artists such as Peso Pluma, Arcangel, and Rauw Alejandro. His biggest hit came with his collab Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53 that currently has 668 million views on Youtube. The tracks went on to break numerous records including being the fastest Latin track to reach 100 million views on Youtube and for most streamed Latin track on Spotify in 24 hours with over 14 million streams. The single also went on to win Best Pop Song and Song of the Year at the Latin Grammys while Bizarrap himself earned New Artist of the Year at the Latin American Music Awards.

Otava Yo

Otava Yo is a one-of-a-kind and unique band. Experienced folk musicians decided to create a slightly less serious than usual music project, without sacrificing traditional Russian sounds. The result was a formation balancing on the border of entertainment and historical references. The multi-million views of the clips and a few very well received records are proof that the folk has not died and is even very well. The musicians play traditional instruments, thanks to which the listener can immerse themselves in unique, often inaudible sounds and absorb them without restrictions. At the same time, all this is adorned with a great sense of humor. Watching music videos Otava Yo is great fun, but only live you can fully experience the amazing atmosphere that beats from the band at every step.

Interview with Alexey Belkin of Russian Folk Band Otava Yo

Otava Yo is one of the rising acts in contemporary Russian folk music. The Saint Petersburg, Russian-based band has an excellent new album available internationally titled “ Do You Love ”

The lineup includes Alexey Belkin on vocals, bagpipes, gusli, zhaleika; Alexey Skosyrev on vocals, acoustic guitar; Dmitry Shikhardin on vocals, fiddle; Yulia Usova on vocals, violin; Petr Sergeev on bass drum and darbuka; and Timur Sigidin on bass.

Otava Yo’s leader Alexey Belkin talked to World Music Central about the band’s background and the new recording.

Q: How and when was Otava Yo formed?

On the streets of St. Petersburg in 2003, where we decided to busk for fun. The feedback from audience was so great, so we started to busk in St. Pete on a regular basis. That time we were playing instrumental Celtic music. Only after 3 years of occasional street performing, we made a first record and perceived our selves as a band.

Q: What do you consider as the essential elements of your music?

We try to keep music live, in terms that we do not like to copy somebody’s ideas, we prefer to invent our own bicycle. If we see some great idea created by somebody else – it inspires us to make something too. Also, we try to keep the main idea of folk songs and do not complicate them. If it is funny cheerful dance song we would not make from it jazzy lounge R&B.

otava yo tour 2023

Q: Who can you cite as your main musical influences?

I can talk only for myself. I used to listen to lots of Celtic artists – Chieftains , Carlos Nuñez , Silly Wizard , etc. and also Scandinavian bands like Hedningarna , Garmarna . I love Latvian band Iļģi . Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Michael Nyman. All of them could make influence on my musical taste.

Q: Tell us about your first recordings and your musical evolution.

The first recording with Otava Yo we made in 2006. After all those sessions on the streets we decide to make live album with everything we played for that time. So, it was an instrumental album with just 1 song. Raw and live. No bass guitar and no even bass drum. Exactly how we played on the streets.

Three years later we made a new album full of Russian traditional songs, the most popular ones. And it was recorded with using all studio possibilities. We made nice arrangements and used more instruments than we can play live, invited some friends. So, it was fun to make that record and to see how good this music could be recorded.

The new album “ Do you love ” in 2018 took us a 6 months of work in studio. And I believe it is our most matured work for now.

otava yo tour 2023

Q: Even though you live in a city, your music contains elements of Russian village music. How do you find traditional rural folk songs?

Well, we live in cities, but some of us used to stay in countryside. I myself till 15 years old stayed in very small town in private house in suburb of St. Petersburg. I was able to go for a walk without seeing a single car, if I wanted I could make a campfire with my friends in my yard, so it was a happy childhood of a small town boy. But there was no folklore in my life. It was USSR and communists did everything they could to steal folklore from Russian population and to replace it with fake academic folklore. But in spite of this the folk songs are all over, all you need just to wish to listen to them. The most of the song we sing we just know. Some of them we found in ethnographic recordings or books. But we never went to ethnographic expeditions.

Q: Otava Yo uses various traditional Russian instruments. Tell us about them and how common are they now?

The most common – electric guitar and bass, the rest are quite rare. Well, to be serious, it is a problem now with getting Russian traditional instruments. You are not able to buy them in store, the only way to get such instrument is only to order it directly from the maker and then wait for a few months. I ordered my new Russian village bagpipe in May, and it is ready only now. But it is worth the wait. How common?… Well, not really.

otava yo tour 2023

Q: Who makes your traditional musical instruments?

Different makers. Some of them are from St. Petersburg, some from other cities. My zhaleikas mostly made by Anton Platonov and Dmitry Dyomin. Gusli by Alexander Teplov. The new Russian bagpipe by Vasiliy Ivanov. Also, I am waiting for the new gaita chanter with keys from Moscow’s maker Alexander Anistratov. All of them you may find on Facebook.

Q: Otava Yo is also known for making captivating music videos. Tell us about the process of making videos and who is involved.

We make them in picaresque way. I have directed all the videos we made. As far as I didn’t study how to shoot video, so I was not afraid to start to make them and just started to do it without understanding the details of the whole video production process. First two videos we even shot by ourselves, only starting from “Street cleaner” we have invited professional camera man.

The process – usually I start to think about the song for which I would like to shoot video. I listen to it more than a hundred times. Then I come up with the main idea and start to work on the script. Then with my partner Vsevolod together we write final script and plan all the shootings details including what kind of equipment we will use and where will rent it. Then we shoot 🙂

After shooting we edit it and make post-production.

Nothing special or unusual. The only important thing – I suppose if we would invite the professional director from the side the result would not be like what we have now, just because it is impossible to find, so folklore involved and oriented director in Russia or outside of it. So, I had to invent everything especially for Otava Yo. I suppose it is a unique product we made in a single copy, it is very difficult to duplicate. So that’s the whole secret.

Q: How’s the current traditional and contemporary folk and world music scene in Saint Petersburg and other parts of Russia?

To be honest, quite bad. The amount of folk groups which on regular basis can play the concerts is very little. The ones which could attract more than 100 listeners even less. We do not have infrastructure for world music. The quantity of world music festivals is also quite low. But I think it is changing a little bit and also with our help too.

Q: If you could gather any musicians or musical groups to collaborate with whom would that be?

Well, I like Hedningarna and Penguin cafe, I think we could make something interesting together. And Rammstein of course 🙂

Q: Do you have any upcoming projects to share with us?

We are getting ready for Christmas tour, which will happen in January 2020. Now we are in the middle of “Once upon a time” tour which is dedicated to 10-year anniversary of our second album “Once upon a time”. Ten more concerts to go.

We need to finish the new video clip, which we shot in August. I wanted to create an adventurous comedy video, and I hope it will work out as I planned. We have some ideas for our YouTube show “Zelyonka”, where we invite other musicians and play together. The last month we had a great guests from Sweden – Garmarna . We plan several other interesting acts within this show. And of course we are planning to work on new songs, and this is the most important thing for us now. The recent live video with new song “Zalivochka” which we just uploaded gathered more than 100K views just for 2 days; that means people look forward for new songs from us.

I love the music and your vocals.

I grew up with a lot of folk music in the 1950’s and 1960’s in the US. You are one of my favorite folk bands and I understand very little Russian.

I stumbled across one of your videos a few weeks ago and have watched dozens since!! I live in the US and it is unlike folk music that I have heard before, though your energy and spirit remind me of bluegrass and Celtic. Your joy in performing it is contagious and always leaves me with a smile on my face.

I’ve just discovered that a number of your videos offer subtitles – this has made viewing your performances even more fun.

Thank you for what you do!!

My wife came across an Otava Yo video and shared it with me, then another, and another, and we quickly became fans of your exhuberent and lovely band! We love your music, your enthusiasm and eagerly wait for each new video that you create! Your music videos are simply a joy to watch and listen to!

I discovered Otava Yo whilst looking for Moscow Nights on YouTube in 2017. Now I am completely hooked. I wish they would come and play in Yorkshire where I live.

the real Slavic spirit is in the rural life, not the city. May Otava Yo help bright that spirit to all peoples!

Wow! I love your music and your videos fill me with joy. Thank you so much! Your friend in Saskatchewan, Canada!

Watching fro m Newzealand amazing 👌

Even though I cannot speak or understand Russian I absolutely love your band and your music!

Just fabulous joyfull music and beautiful film locations, was trying to work out where the band was from and kept coming up with they have to be russian obviously but lve never heard that type of music. Love it and hoping once covid is under control the band can come to Australia.. world music adelaide would be a real lover of your music .cheers from australia.

Otava Yo, you are amazing. We love your music very much here in Wyoming in the USA. We are avid celtic music fans (Planxty, Bothy Band, Talisk, Tannahill Weavers, Solas, Carlos Nunez, et cetera) and one day an Otava Yo video came on our YouTube feed. We are hooked on your lovely music. It’s so obvious you love the land and culture of your country. Your videos are utterly captivating. All the effort you put into them does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. You have made our lives better with your music. Thank you so much! P.S. I am a Highland Piper of 35 years. Wondering if you play the Scottish Highland Pipes as well.

Otava Yo, I agree with all the comments above. Cannot tell you how much your music inspires me and your videos always put me in a good mood. I’m a US Marine currently stationed in Germany, and cannot wait to see you in concert here in Europe! Thank you for making such wonderful music!!!

No Canadian dates yet? Guess I will make the trip to St.Petes then 🙂 “Discovered” The Tale of Ivan Groove 3 years ago and have been listening to it ever since. I play it all the time at our gatherings. Love when people ask what language that is. Keep the music flowing!!

Love your music and your videos! Come to Alaska!

I found Ivana groove on youtube 4-5 years ago Listened to you guys constantly When you coming to Montreal??? I want to live in that old village by the canal! Little rowboat to go visit the neighbours. Small old house with leaky roof and a wood stove Heaven!!

What type of fiddle is Dmitry playing? The female fiddle players play more traditional violins, but his fiddle looks like it’s on steroids.

I live in the US. I usually listen to bluegrass and love music with lots of instruments. Started looking for folk music from other countries and found Otava Yo on YouTube. I am now addicted. It doesn’t matter if you don’t understand the words if the music is great. I also like Hrdza from Slovakia.

They are just amazing, turn in on 24th of December for their ONLINE Christmas concert at 7pm (Moscow time).

What Aleksy forget to say is that they keep alive not only Russian folklore but European folklore too.

In the 1970s, the beacon of light was in the West and the USA. Today it’s in the East. While westerners try their best to destroy their roots, Eastern nation celebrate them. Just read what Aleksey says about what the communists in the USSR did with traditional songs, and you know what the new USSR in the West tries to do in with the same.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
