Critters casual – Help, i want a horse

You got yourself a nice little hobbit or dwarf. But their feet grow tired quite fast. Then you spot those things with four legs with players on them. You already had one like those, but it dissappeared after 24 hours. And now you’re dammed to walk to mordor on your own two feet. For surely a horse is too expensive and in /world you get all kinds of advice...

Follow Me! (A Guide to LOTRO’s Follow Mechanics)

Pretty much everyone knows how ‘Follow’ works, in theory: you select another player, right-click their portrait in the screen, then click on ‘Follow’ from the drop-down. If you spend a lot of time following someone, or occasionally have trouble clicking on things (or, like me, are too lazy for clicking), you can keybind it to something...

A Hunter's guide to fast-travel in LotRO

There are several reasons to roll a Hunter in Lord of the Rings Online . You can usually do the most damage. You are the primary ranged-attacker. You can track virtually anything in the game. You can provide speed buffs that help you and your fellowship run faster. You can name yourself some clever variation of "Legolas". Whoa wait, no. Please don't ever do that. But the fact of the matter is, the Hunter is a powerful and extremely popular class in the game, and it would never hurt to learn a bit more about the actual usefulness of their skills. In this guide, we're going to focus on one of the most valuable aspects of the Hunter: the wayfaring or "guide" skills that allow you to quickly and easily teleport yourself or your entire fellowship to certain spots across the map instantly.

These skills may be considered overpowered by many other players, but the fact is, they make the Hunter viable in a group setting, so that's exactly how we're going to approach this guide. The class is so geared towards solo-ability and high direct-ranged damage, that sometimes their aggro-stealing abilities become a problem in the hands of the less experienced players. But if played correctly, the Hunter stays in the background during combat and picks off his targets gently or lays down the occasional snare while the rest of the group does their crowd control thing. For this reason, you want to make sure that as a Hunter in a group, when it comes to the things you know best -- tracking and traveling -- you are confident in your abilities. We're here to help. The first of this type of skill is not an actual guide skill itself, but it can be considered a "guide light" skill. The skill is Find the Path which will increase the fellowship run speed by 15%. You can also use it on yourself, but when you are attacked or you attack an enemy, the buff instantly turns off. Keep in mind that while this is a fellowship-affecting skill, it only works if the members of your group are very near you. It's especially helpful when running to the quest location or between fights at lower levels, but remember that any aggro at all will turn this skill off. You gain this skill fairly early at level 14 from any Hunter trainer for 19 silver and 60 copper. The second wayfaring skill is called Desperate Flight , which will teleport you to a nearby rally point. These rally points are the stone circles you find yourself in after your character dies. This skill can be a blessing when you're in deep trouble and want to escape certain death, but if overused, it can be a nuisance to the rest of your fellowship. Notoriously, this skill has gained a bad reputation from players who abuse it (or use it at all in a group), so if you choose to bring it, use it as a last resort. As with the majority of these wayfaring skills (besides Find the Path), this skill requires the use of Travelling Rations ; only one in this case, though. You can buy these rations from any Provisioner NPC throughout the game at the cost of 2 silver per piece. For the first "real" guide skill in the wayfaring line, we have Guide to Michel Delving , which you obtain at level 22 from your Hunter trainer. At the cost of 64 power and 2 Travelling Rations, you can teleport to the southeastern corner of The Shire with your fellowship. An important note when using these guide skills is to remember that they only work on fellowship members who are close to you, so make sure everyone is standing near you before you use the skill, or you might end up with some angry group members. The second guide skill is Guide to Thorin's Hall obtained at level 24. This skill costs 64 power and 2 Travelling Rations to use. It will take you to the northern side of Thorin's Gate in Ered Luin, where you can find the amazingly large Dwarven fortress of Thorin's Hall. The third guide skill is Guide to Ost Guruth which is the first of these skills that you will obtain through a quest entitled "Wilderness by Ost Guruth" instead of simply buying from the Hunter trainer. You'll get this quest at level 26 from any of the various Hunter trainers throughout Middle Earth. Once you've completed the quest, you will then be able to teleport to Ost Guruth in the Lone-Lands at the cost of 64 power and 3 Travelling Rations. Also at level 26 you will have access to a very valuable skill called Return to Camp , which basically allows you and your fellowship to teleport to any of the twelve camp site fire locations throughout the land. These camp sites should not be confused with the regular camp fires which are used by the Cook profession to create their trail food. Instead, these camp sites are usually located right outside of an instance and are used to help teleport the group quickly into battle. You must actually bind yourself to the camp site first, much as you do with the milestone locations for quick travel back home. At a cost of 64 power and 3 Travelling Rations, it is certainly worth the time saved. The fourth guide skill is Guide to Bree which you will obtain at level 32 from the Hunter trainer. At the cost of 64 power and 2 Travelling Rations, you can easily teleport back to this wonderful mecca in the center of the land of Man known as Bree-Land. This skill is particularly useful as there are certain aspects of this city that are not found anywhere else, such as the trophy vendors. The fifth guide skill you'll gain is Guide to Esteldin which will take you to the east-central North Downs city of Esteldin, home of one of the finest crafting halls -- and your first encounter with a Superior Workbench! -- around. Not only is this city an important gateway to Nan Amlug and eventually Angmar, but it is jam-packed full of quests and acts as the perfect pivot point for leveling throughout your 30s. This guide skill will be available to you at level 34, and it also costs 64 power and 3 Travelling Rations to use. The sixth guide skill is Guide to Evendim , which is the second such skill that is obtained through a quest. This one is entitled "Tracks through Evendim", and once successfully completed, will grant you the ability to travel to the central Evendim island of Tinnudir. It also costs 64 power, 3 Travelling Rations and is only available at level 36. You'll find yourself with quite a long stretch of time before you can obtain your seventh guide skill at level 44. This one is called Guide to West Angmar and is obtained through a quest entitled "Desolation by Aughaire". Once completed, you will then be able to teleport to Aughaire, in western Angmar at the cost of 64 power and 4 Travelling Rations. The eighth guide skill in your journey is Guide to Rivendell which is available at level 46. There are so many reasons why you'd want to travel to this gorgeous Elven metropolis in the eastern Trollshaws, but what other reason do you need other than the fact that this is where you will first meet the real fellowship! Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Aragorn... they're all here! Even your namesake Legolas is here! It's an exciting milestone in the progression of the game when you reach Rivendell, and this skill will help you relive that euphoria whenever you feel like 64 power and 3 Travelling Rations are burning a hole in your pocket. Finally, the last guide skill in the wayfaring set is Guide to East Angmar which you will gain at level 48 through the completion of the quest "Waste Near Gath Forthnir". You will only be able to gain access to this quest upon the completion of Book 6: Chapter 7. It will cost you 64 power and an unpresedented 5 Travelling Rations to use this guide skill. Be sure to practice common sense when using these wayfaring skills in a group. Ask them if they want to be teleported after the quest or instance is over. Let them know that they need to be standing near you for it to work effectively, if you see any stragglers wandering outside of your range. And finally, we can't say it enough, but Desperate Flight is not called "Kinda Unsure Flight" or "It Might Be Fun To Play A Trick On The Group By Teleporting Yourself To A Random Spot To Leave Them Fending For Themselves Flight". It's to be used when you're in a desperate situation and know you're about to die, preferably while soloing. And that's it! We hope with this new fast-travel knowledge in place, you will be a better Hunter, especially in a group setting where your knowledge of the land will prove invaluable to those classes not as finely-tuned into nature's blessings. Go forth and hunt!

Narufind's Chicken Play Guide

What is chicken play, where is chicken play.

  • The Sky is Falling introduces the basic concepts of chicken play.
  • Flying the Coop is essentially training for the longer chicken runs, these can be completed in any order.
  • Big Runs which take significantly longer, plan for at least 2 hours for the shortest of these.

Do Chickens have skills?

  • Fowl Fleetness - +50% Run Speed for 30s, 2m cooldown.
  • Possum Impersonation - Drop aggro, no cooldown if used while moving, if used while stationary then you’ll play dead for up to 1m with a 2m cooldown.
  • Paranoia - Increases stealth detection for 1m, 2m cooldown. Do not rely on this.
  • Bob and Weave - Increases Evade for 30s, 2m cooldown. Do not rely on this.

Tips

  • Tenders (AKA escorts, guards, protectors) are helpful for many of the chicken quests, Hunters especially can track stealth enemies (like the Moor Prowlers in the High Moor ).
  • Beware of respawns , they are even more dangerous than stealthy mobs. A mob may respawn and snack on a chicken before any Tenders even see it, do not tarry where mobs spawn!
  • Chickens cannot chat with Players and cannot join fellowships (even with other chickens) so I strongly recommend using a third-party application to communicate (e.g. Discord).
  • You can make spotting enemies and chickens much easier by disabling frills and enabling Floating Text Always On Top.
  • Hover your cursor over a chicken and use the detach tool-tip hotkey to have a floating tool-tip for that chicken, if you click on the detached tool-tip it will select the chicken.
  • If you have a group of chicken Tenders the leader can place markers above the heads of chickens.
  • Though generally higher-level Tenders are more effective, Tenders that are on-level with the enemies in an area can be used to aggro mobs before the chickens do. This is particularly useful in areas with stealthy enemies but it can also backfire if the enemies have area attacks. On-level Tenders will also see red dots on the radar.
  • Each session will reset the UI but you can use /ui layout save <name> and /ui layout load <name> to solve this issue.
  • The /stuck command can be used to teleport to the nearest rally point , much like the hunter skill Desperate Flight. However, you will be unable to move for 1 minute after using the command and it has a 1 hour cooldown. (Note that some old guides utilized the original function which returned you to Sandson's Farm .)
  • Plugins that indicate combat help alert you when a mob is attacking.
  • The Fowl Map plugin highlights areas that stealthy mobs can spawn, has routes for The Great Wide Open and There and Bawk Again, and shows all of the locations that you must visit for Free Range.
  • To more easily update your location in map plugins you can create a shortcut. E.g. /shortcut 5 /loc will place the /loc command in the 5th quickslot.
  • Chickens can pick up ingredients such as Taters and Yarrow Root, though there's no way to use or trade them.
  • The /eat emote will cause your chicken to peck at the ground. Unfortunately no other emote has an animation for chickens.

Great guide! Thanks for the shoutout & thanks for putting this together! Alternate route to Minas Tirith: Instead of passing Edoras, head for Dunharrow and take the Paths of the Dead to Western Gondor and just head east. Sneak to the left around Harlond and go thru the gap in the wall.

Introduction

The Red Hunter provides excellent high DPS through long-range stationary attacks. As a class, Hunters have always been a reliable choice in raids and instances for a long time due to their ranged attacks capable of dishing out high-burst damage while staying. Making them ideal as a DPS for all types of content. With the ability to trait for more AoE damage, they can also dish out significant damage to multiple targets, which is useful for trash pulls.

Other information sources available

Critical Rating-> Physical Mastery-> (Enough)Finesse -> Tact/Phys Mitigations -> Vitality

When it comes to stat prioritization for a Red Hunter, Critical Rating (25%) should be prioritized over Physical Mastery (200%), followed by Tactical Mitigation and then Vitality.

Keep in mind that, through the traits  Shoot To Kill  and  Critical Eye , the cap for Critical Rating is increased to 30% and the cap for Ranged Attacks is increased to 210%.

Trait Trees

Second trait tree is survival focussed version of the top. With strength of earth replaced with mitigations from yellow.

The class system - how classes affect the lotro experience.

  • Melee fighter
  • Spellcaster/wizard (magic user)
  • Tank - Someone who protects allies by drawing threat  from enemies with an ability to survive a lot of damage.
  • DPS (damage per second), also called DD (damage dealer) - Someone who focuses on dealing damage to enemies.
  • Heal - Someone who raises the morale (health) of allies, working to keep them alive.
  • Support - Someone who does not fit solely into the tank-DPS-heal trinity known to many RPGs that works to strengthen allies and weaken enemies while bringing utility to combat.

LOTRO Class Overviews

lotro travel guide

  • 2-hander for slower, heavier hitting - allows for more damage in bear form (often preferred for DPS Beornings)
  • Dual-wield for quicker hitting and more stats - allows for more damage in man form (often preferred for healing and tanking Beornings)
  • Blue | The Hide | Tank - Focuses on grabbing aggro from enemies and using Bear form to gain survivability and damage capabilities.
  • Red | The Claw | Melee DPS - Focuses on bleeding enemies while generating wrath in Man form then consuming wrath in Bear form with high damage abilities.
  • Yellow | The Roar | Healer-Support - Focuses on balancing wrath builders and consumers to heal allies and debuff enemies while frequently swapping between Man and Bear form.

lotro travel guide

lotro travel guide

  • Blue | The Gambler | Melee DPS - Focuses on rolling gambles which can damage and debuff enemies or buff the Burglar with additional bleeds and self-sustain.
  • Red | The Quiet Knife | Melee DPS - Focuses on attacks from stealth, strong critical hits opening powerful critical chain skills, and bleeding enemies.
  • Yellow | The Mischief-maker | Support - Focuses on tricks and trick-removal skills to weaken enemies, enabling groups to deal more damage or takes less damage, working to support the fellowship.

lotro travel guide

  • Blue | Hands of Healing | Support-Heal - Focuses their buffing on healing allies with some additional damage and defenses support. Healing is largely passive and works as you damage enemies, which inspires allies.
  • Red | Lead the Charge | Support-DPS - Focuses their buffing on boosting the damage of allies with minimal defensive and healing support.
  • Yellow | Leader of Men | Tank-Support - Focuses on tanking enemies while buffing defenses of allies. Brings additional utility and minimal damage and healing support.

lotro travel guide

  • 2-hander for slower, heavier hitting, but often fewer attacks
  • Dual-wield for quicker hitting and more attacks, but weaker hits
  • Blue | The Martial Champion | Tank - Focuses on becoming an offensive tank with bubbles, self-heals, and reactions. Opts for a 2-handed weapon because they can block with them.
  • Red | The Berserker | Support-DPS - Focuses on single target damage with strong critical hits.
  • Yellow | The Deadly Storm | Tank-Support - Focuses on area-of-effect damage with attacks that hit enemies multiple times.

lotro travel guide

  • 1-handed weapon and shield - allows the use of shield attacks and gives more defenses, but has lower damage (often valued for heavy tanking)
  • 2-handed weapon - allows for more damage, but disables shield attacks and lowers defenses (often valued for more DPS)
  • Blue | The Defender of the Free | Tank (Defensive) - Focuses on becoming a heavy, defense-oriented tank who draws aggro from enemies and protects allies, always with a shield.
  • Red | The Keen Blade | Melee DPS - Drops defenses and the tank role for a full offense, with a variety of themes. Focuses on the parry chain (and forcing it open), bleeds, critical damage, and fast attacks.
  • Yellow | The Fighter of Shadow | Tank (Offensive) - Focuses on becoming a more offensive tank, dealing area-of-effect damage and debuffing enemies. They may forego a shield for more damage and still block with a 2-handed weapon.

lotro travel guide

  • Blue | Huntsman | Ranged DPS (Mobile) - With the ability to shoot on the move, they focus on mobility. They aim to rapidly fire instant shots and bleed enemies.
  • Red | Bowmaster | Ranged DPS (Steady) - Focuses on steady, induction-based shots and strong critical hits as a long-range archer.
  • Yellow | Trapper of Foes | Utility-DPS - Focuses on traps and survivability while bleeding enemies. They work to control the way enemies move and increase their vulnerability to attacks.

lotro travel guide

  • Blue | Keeper of the Animals | Tactical Utility-DPS (Pet-focused) - Pet-centric LM with greatly empowered pets who can provide utility through valuable combat benefits and buffs. LM and pet attacks and abilities can benefit each other. Generally, the LM focuses on spellcasting and pet management.
  • Red | Master of Nature's Fury | Tactical DPS (Spell-focused) - Focuses on damaging spells, specializing in area-of-effect burst damage and slowly built sustain damage over time.
  • Yellow | The Ancient Master | Support - Focuses on debuffing and fellowship support spells, ultimately weaking enemies and bringing a lot of utility.

lotro travel guide

  • Blue | The Watcher of Resolve | Healer - Focuses on healing allies while providing defensive buffs through anthems.
  • Red | The Warrior-Skald | Tactical DPS - Focuses on damaging enemies with powerful cries and calls, while anthems provide offensive buffs.
  • Yellow | The Protector of Song | Support-Healer - Takes a balanced approach with damaging and healing aspects while focusing on supporting the fellowship through powerful anthems. Can both damage and heal, although, they are individually weaker compared to other specs.

lotro travel guide

  • Blue | Benediction of Peace | Healer - Focuses on healing allies with heal over time abilities and bubbles which prevent damage.
  • Red | Cleansing Flame | Tactical DPS (Fire) - Focuses on induction-based fire spells to deal damage over time, both area-of-effect and single-target.
  • Yellow | Solitary Thunder | Tactical DPS (Lightning) - Focucses on instant-cast lightning spells for mobility to deal instant damage with large critical hits, primarily in single-target.

lotro travel guide

  • Blue | Determination | Tank - Agile tank who focuses on avoiding enemy attacks and self-sustain while dealing strong damage with bleeds and light damage-over-time in single-target and area-of-effect. Primarily melee, but has access to the ranged stance (Assailment) for a unique ranged tank experience.
  • Red | Recklessness | Melee DPS - Focuses on melee gambits, dealing damage through bleed damage-over-time in single-target and light damage-over-time in both single-target and area-of-effect.
  • Yellow | Assailment | Ranged DPS - Focuses on javelin skills, providing some utility and support, and ranged gambits, which bleed enemies, deal relatively high upfront damage, and debuff enemies.

  • open options window, go to Enable tab, click "Check untrained skills" button, the skill will show up
  • relog the character
  • Because once the trait is acquired, it is classified as a "learned" skill by LOTRO itself, even though it is greyed out. Travel Window II, unfortunately, has no way of knowing if you have the racial trait equipped and the skill is usable. If you are not using the skill permanently, you can use the Enable/Disable options to hide it like any other skill.
  • Use the mousewheel while hovering over the travel skill icon to change the selected skill.

In-Depth Hunter Class Guide for LOTRO

Photo of author

Welcome to our Hunter class guide for Lord of the Rings Online! Here you will learn about the play-style of the Hunter for solo, landscape, or dungeon game play. This guide will cover Hunter build suggestions, which virtues to slot, which vocations are useful, and tips on how to play your Hunter.

If you’re a new player or returning to LOTRO after a long break and would like a refresher, take a seat at the campfire and join me as we cover all things related to the Hunter class.

Who are the Hunters of Middle-earth?

The Hunters in LOTRO were inspired by Legolas, the Prince of the Woodland Realm and son of Thranduil, King of Mirkwood. Legolas was an accomplished bowmaster and tracker, with enhanced hearing and eyesight. His weapons of choice were an Elven bow and a long white knife. One of the most tireless members of the Fellowship, Legolas combated enemies from range with his bow and when in close combat, use his blade.

The Play-Style of the Hunter

The Hunter class is for players who like fast paced and hard hitting ranged combat, this class will also appeal to anyone who enjoys attacking from afar, the challenge of kiting monsters, planning trap placement, and having improved travel options and movement speed while on foot.

Masters of field and forest, the Hunter excels in combat with the bow and defeating single-target enemies from range. When approached in close combat the Hunter uses its dual-wield weapons to engage the enemy. Their traps are helpful for taking on multiple targets. Hunter’s are considered an easy class to learn and their role is damage.

The Hunter is a popular class in LOTRO and any server you log into will find they are almost always the most populated class online.

Fast Travelers

If you like having the ability to quickly travel from one area to another this is another win for the Hunter class as you can teleport to 50 different locations around Middle-earth with the click of a button and transport your whole Fellowship too.

Hunter guide skills are an essential part of the class and we have a separate article on how to obtain all the Hunter travel skills , it is an extensive list and definitely worth the read if you are considering this class.

Combat Mechanics

As a ranged class the Hunter operates on Power and Focus, a resource your Hunter uses to power attacks and other skills. You build Focus during combat using your Focus building skills and spend it on your Hunter’s most powerful abilities.

The skill animations are a ranger type of combat, shooting arrows doesn’t actually appear magical or sparkle like it does in some other games, in LOTRO you nock and loose your bow and the arrow flies with minimal spell animation. However, you can apply Fire Oil or Light Oil to add some fiery and light type animations to your spells for a duration. If you’re wanting a more spell casting type of class, the Lore-master or Rune-keeper offer “magical” kinds of spells for ranged combat.

Survival and Utility

Tracking your foes is a breeze as the Hunter learns different skills to find specific types of targets, and hunting allows for the placement of traps to strategically take down an enemy or for your protection during combat.

Which Race is Best for a Hunter?

Hunters can be the following races: Dwarf, Elf, High Elf, Hobbit, Man, or Stout Axe. If you’re looking for the best Hunter race in terms of damage output you would want to go with the Elf race, if you want to be a bit hardy choose Hobbit, if you like utility the Race of Man.

Elves passively gain +15 Agility and can earn the racial traits Elf Bow-damage Bonus which offers +5% to bow damage and the Elf One-handed Sword-damage Bonus gives +5% damage with one-hand swords.

Hobbits have Rapid Recovery which allows for +60 non-combat morale regeneration, so you’re healing up rather quickly on the move and out of combat. Hobbits also offer +15 Vitality with Hobbit-toughness, extra health and higher resistances can be advantageous for a Hunter. Feigning death and dropping aggro from monsters can also be useful with the Hobbit racial trait, Hobbit-silence, though it comes with a 30-minute cool-down.

The Race of Man offers two racial traits that can be useful for Hunters, the Duty-Bound skill provides a buff to the Fellowship of +5% max morale for 10 minutes and the Strength of Morale skill gives the Hunter an extra heal of 2200-3300 morale, though both of these skills have a 30 minute cool-down.

The question of which race is best for a class has always been a subjective topic, and I stand by the recommendation of choosing the race that is most meaningful for you and your play-style.

Essential Hunter Stats

The Hunter can equip Light or Medium armor and will want to look for Medium armor that has Agility and Vitality stats for the best possible damage output while having a good Morale pool to survive attacks. At higher levels you want to add Physical Mastery and Critical Rating . Physical Mastery increases your ranged and melee damage, and Critical Rating increases your chance to land a critical hit and the magnitude of a devastating hit for your melee and ranged attacks.

Hunter Weapons & Equipment

A bow (or cross-bow) is the Hunter’s ranged weapon and they also dual wield one-handed weapons like axes, clubs, daggers, hammers, maces, spears, and swords. The spear can be equipped into the main hand only. While you rarely confront monsters in melee combat you want to have good quality melee weapons to further your stats.

Each class in LOTRO has a Class Slot on your character panel, for Hunters this slot is equipped with Hunter Books. The books offer additional stats to increase your Morale or Vitality and decrease your ranged threat or reduce power costs of your skills. There are a variety of Hunter books to equip, you can buy them from your Class Trainer, and they can be crafted by a Scholar and traded or sold in the Auction House.

Crafting Vocation for Hunters

Here are some crafting suggestions that offer the most useful items for the Hunter class.

If the Hunter is your first character, and one that you will be playing most often, the Explorer vocation will be very helpful for your Hunter, it offers the Tailor, Forester, and Prospector. The Tailor can make Medium armor, which is some of the best gear you can get especially while leveling.

The Forester and Prospector gather materials such as wood/ore that you can funnel to your other characters to process with their Vocations or to sell the raw materials on the Auction House to make coin.

Besides the Explorer, the next best crafting Vocation for a Hunter is hands-down the Historian . The Historian offers the Scholar, Farmer, and Weaponsmith. Scholars make several useful items for your Hunter, they craft Fire/Light Oils that can be applied to your weapons to deal some extra damage and slightly change up the way your skills look.

The Scholar can also make Hunter Books, your class slot item and they craft Bow Chants that empower your bow for a duration. Then of course they can make potions, scrolls, and dyes for your armor and cosmetics.

If you would like to see an overview of all the Vocations, check out our LOTRO Crafting Guide .

Best Hunter Virtues – Which Should Be Slotted?

Virtues offer stat bonuses for your character, here are some of the best Virtues for your Hunter and why. You can slot 5 Virtues at a time and all Virtue slots will be unlocked by level 23. Each Virtue’s first stat is the highest for that Virtue, the additional stats are slightly lower than the first and so on. You may want to take that into consideration when choosing your Virtues.

Determination adds Agility , Physical Mastery Rating, and Critical Rating, the Hunters most important stats for offensive damage. It also adds Passive bonuses for Physical Mastery Rating and Tactical Mastery Rating. Boosting morale recovery and increasing morale.

Valour for Physical Mastery Rating , Finesse Rating, Critical Rating and passive bonuses for Physical Mastery Rating and Tactical Mastery Rating. Finesse Rating adds some reduction to the resistance of enemies and their Block/Parry/Evade ratings.

Loyalty gives Vitality , Armour Value, Incoming Healing Rating and the passive bonus of Maximum Morale. Vitality and Max Morale provides more health to the Hunter, Armour Value increases it’s toughness, and Incoming Healing Rating allows for more healing.

Fortitude adds Maximum Morale , Critical Defense, Resistance Rating, and passive bonus of Maximum Morale. This is a great defensive Virtue, it adds Morale for a higher health pool, and provides some benefit for defense against critical strikes, and resistances to Wound, Fear, Disease, and Poison.

Confidence offers Critical Rating , Finesse Rating, Evade Rating and passive bonuses for Physical Mastery Rating and Tactical Mastery Rating.

Wit provides Finesse Rating , Critical Rating, Physical and Tactical Master Rating. Wit will give you the most Finesse Rating and if you are going for a DPS build, you could swap out Fortitude or Loyalty.

Justice for in-Combat Morale Regen , Maximum Morale, Tactical Mitigation and passive bonus of Maximum Morale. Justice is good for a Hunter who is on the move and likes to have more health/morale regeneration in combat.

Tolerance for Tactical Mitigation , Resistance Rating, Physical Mitigation and passive bonus to Maximum Morale. If you prefer more mitigation from incoming Tactical damage, non-physical attacks.

Tips for Playing Your Hunter

Here are some tips and tricks for learning to play your Hunter and what to expect from the class.

  • Building Focus is vital for your Hunter to use your most powerful skills, start your rotation with a Focus builder skill like Quick Shot, Barbed Arrow, or Swift Bow. You can also gain Focus by using Set Trap.
  • Continue your rotation by spending the Focus you have generated on more powerful skills like Penetrating Shot, Merciful Shot and Blood Arrow.
  • Make sure your Hunter has enabled one of your stances, they can be Strength, Precision, and Endurance. Choose the one that fits your style and the combat you are about to encounter, stances can be changed anytime.
  • Before entering combat channel the Focus skill, this will fill your Focus bar up and make combat more efficient. You don’t have to channel the entire 3 second cast, look to your Focus bar to see it fill up, then start combat.
  • Blood Arrow is a damage skill that also provides the hunter with a heal that restores 10% of your max morale and removes corruptions from the enemy. This ability can be improved with traits in the blue line Huntsman specialization.
  • Use Find The Path, a toggle skill that applies an out-of-combat run speed boost to you and your Fellowship.
  • There are several consumables useful to the Hunter class, you want to add some Fire Oil or Light Oil to your bow, and a Bow Chant too. These items can be purchased from the Hunter trainer or at the Auction House, they can also be crafted by a Scholar.
  • You can have one of each type of food buff active, so look for Cooked Food, Trail Food, and Fortifying Foods, these can be made by a Cook, purchased in the AH, and some vendors.
  • It’s a good idea to carry some Athelas Essence potions for healing Morale, Celebrant Essence potions for regeneration power, and Potions of Focus for filling your Focus bar in a pinch.
  • The Hunter has great utility for itself and the fellowship with its traveling guide skills, don’t forget to set your Return To Camp skill, it’s essentially a second Milestone without a cooldown.
  • When out of combat you can place a Bright Campfire that heals yourself and nearby allies quickly, it also regenerates your power and provides stealth detection.
  • Intent Concentration is a buff that will fill your Focus bar on a 3 minute cooldown, usable in combat.
  • If you get in over your head and need to retreat, use Desperate Flight, this skill will instantly teleport you to the nearest rally point safely, use this skill wisely as it has a 30-minute cooldown.
  • Cry of the Hunter should be used when you have multiple enemies attacking, especially in close range as it will remove disabling effects, increase your movement speed, and place a shield granting a boost of Morale for a time. You can not be interrupted when inside the bubble.
  • As a Hunter you will engage in melee combat sometimes and when that happens you want to use Low Cut which hits up to 3 enemies and Dazing Blow can daze the enemy, these skills will also build Focus.
  • The Hunter learns 3 different tracking skills to help you locate specific enemies in an area, very useful when you are looking for a certain rare or quest mob.
  • Camouflage allows the Hunter to stealth so long as they remain still, and if you need to drop aggro use Beneath Notice to reduce your threat.
  • Bard’s Arrow can fear a target for 15 seconds so long as it doesn’t take damage and Distracting Shot will daze a target for 10 seconds, very helpful skills that can control your enemies.
  • At level 15, 30, 50, and 58 visit your class trainer and complete the class quests offered.
  • When you reach level 45 you can begin the level 50 Epic quest for your first Legendary weapon, the bow and then continue the story to get your second weapon, a sword.
  • Hunters will find plenty of damage increasing stats on their gear and Legendary items, don’t forget to buff your health for better survival, Virtues with morale can help in this area.

Hunter Build Suggestions

The Hunter class in LOTRO can choose from three separate Class Trait specializations, and each of those builds can be customized to the players liking in several ways. Below is an overview of what you can expect from each of the specs and some suggestions to consider when creating your Hunter build.

Huntsman (Blue Line)

The Huntsman allows you to be on the move while shooting your skills in combat, this is the Blue Line of the specialization tree. As a Huntsman you are offloading sustained damage quickly and rapidly, you don’t lose Focus power if you move and you can cast your skills that require an induction (cast time) while moving.

The Huntsman makes a great build for solo and landscape play and for leveling up, it’s for players who like fast action on the move fighting and don’t mind sacrificing some dps for that mobility. The Hunstman can fell enemies with ease and quickly, and can take on enemies several levels higher.

Solo Hunter Build – Huntsman Survival

For solo and landscape content, I typically go for 46 points in Huntsman, 5 in Bowmaster to gain Critical Eye, and 21 points in Trapper of Foes to have access to 2 more traps, Trip Wire and Piercing Trap along with Explosive Arrow and Advanced Placement. If you are a fan of traps, and playing a survival style class, this would be a build to consider.

lotro travel guide

Solo Hunter Build – Huntsman Damage

For a more damage focused build, place 46 points in Huntsman, 21 points in Bowmaster until you get the Rain of Arrows and Burn Hot skills, then add 5 points in Natural Extracts from the yellow line to increase your damage over time bleeds. With this build you want to use your bleed damage skills like Heart Seeker, Barbed Arrow and Blood Arrow on more difficult enemies to really burn them down quickly.

lotro travel guide

Key Huntsman Skills

Some of the skills you can learn when in the Huntsman specialization are:

Barrage is a quick ranged attack that gains more damage when used multiple times on the same target. The power cost does go up with each successful shot of Barrage.

Split Shot can shoot multiple arrows hitting up to 4 targets, spending additional trait points into Split Shot adds up to 3 more targets.

Scourging Blow is a melee attack that does additional damage if the target is bleeding from Barbed Arrow . Exsanguinate is a bonus bleed attack that can be applied to the target when using Blood Arrow.

The Huntsman can trait into a self-heal, Press Onward and a power-heal, Strength of the Earth for greater survival. Pathfinder increases your Find The Path movement speed buff for each rank.

Rapid Fire is a self-buff that removes the Focus cost of all your skills for 10 seconds with a 90 second cool-down and with the spec set bonus Intensified Fire every attack made while using Rapid Fire puts a stacking Physical Mastery buff on the Hunter.

Bowmaster (Red Line)

The Bowmaster is a hard hitting, burst damage dealer at the expense of having to stay stationary in combat, this specialization is the red line and is used primarily in dungeon and raid group content as it is generally considered to dish out the most damage of the three specializations. The Bowmaster can also attack at the farthest distance from its enemies.

DPS for Fellowship Hunter Build – Bowmaster

A red line Hunter build will require at minimum 35 points in Bowmaster, and you could go as far as 51 points in the red line picking up everything except for Hail of Arrows, then spend at least 22 points in Huntsman to gain the Shot Through The Heart trait. If you can sacrifice 5 points in the red line, you can spend those in Trapper of Foes for the Natural Extracts trait to increase dot damage.

lotro travel guide

Key Bowmaster Skills

Some of the skills and buffs you can learn when in the red line, Bowmaster specialization are:

Pinning Shot roots enemies in place for a short time.

Heart Seeker a bleed shot that cannot be dodged, parried, or evaded and applies a dot to the target.

Rain of Arrows an AOE skill that hits up to 10 maximum targets at once.

A buff skill, Burn Hot , applies +20% ranged damage and reduces the power cost of skills by 10%.

The Upshot attack deals additional damage based on the amount of Focus consumed on use, up to 9 Focus.

With the Bowmaster specialization bonuses, you will gain several buffs to your skills, most notably Shoot To Kill increases ranged damage by 10%. Archers Mark has a chance to apply a critical debuff to the target and an increase of critical damage on all Bow attacks by 10% with Hemorrhaging Shot .

Hidden Stalker increases your stealth detection and the critical chance while camouflaged.

Trapper of Foes (Yellow Line)

The Trapper of Foes specialization focuses on crowd-control and area of affect combat while sustaining damage. As a Trapper, all of the Hunters traps can be set on the move and do not have an induction time. The Trapper of Foes also brings debuffs for the Fellowship with Armor Rend debuffing the targets Parry, Evade, and Block chance.

Solo Hunter Build – Trapper of Foes Survival

A survival yellow line hunter build will spend at least 35 points in Trapper of Foes and the remaining points in the Huntsman, blue line for the Onward self-heal and increase movement speed with Pathfinder. While also picking up Split Shot and the buffs to Blood Arrow and Barbed Fury for increased damage over time.

Solo Hunter Build – Trapper of Foes Damage

A damage focused trapper build will have 35 points in Trapper of Foes, 6 points in Huntsman for Impact Arrows and Onward, then 24 points in Bowmaster picking up Heart Seeker, In For The Kill, Quick Escape, and Burn Hot. You can remove the 6 points in Huntsman if you don’t need or want the Onward self-heal, maybe you would prefer Split Shot for some AOE, adjust as necessary.

Key Trapper Skills

With the Trapper of Foes, yellow line, here are some of the essential skills you gain in this spec:

Lingering Wound is a ranged damage skill that applies a DOT that can stack up to 4 times. Shoot an Explosive Arrow to an area and all enemies that come in contact will take fire damage.

Decoy is a fun skill, you drop a target dummy that taunts enemies to attack it until it’s health is exhausted or 1 minute passes. The skill can be useful for “tanking” enemies for you or to use when you need to get away quickly and recover.

The Hunters initial Set Trap skill upgrades to Triple Trap which places 3 traps at once and roots the enemy in place.

Tripwire is a trap that can knock an enemy over and stun it for a time, Piercing Trap triggers speed reduction and applies a DOT for 20 seconds. The One Trap deals upfront heavy damage, slowing the enemy and then adding DOT of light damage for 20 seconds.

With Advanced Placement all traps are changed to range, ground targeted and increase the range of distance you can place them.

The set bonus Purge Poison can now cure your whole Fellowship. Emergency Preparations allows the Hunter to immediately evade by placing a trap in front of them.

Rain of Thorns damages and pins multiple enemies to the ground for a time.

Onward and Upward

I hope you find this guide to the Hunter class useful in your adventures ahead! Don’t forget to check out our Travel Skills for Hunters guide and if you’re still considering other classes, we have a guide on selecting a class in LOTRO too. Happy Hunting!
