Melbourne, it’s finally time for you to witness the glory that is Channing Tatum’s Magic Mike Live.

Opening in Melbourne on Tuesday 29 June, in the world’s largest Spiegeltent, The Arcadia , at Birrarung Marr, the cast of this first-class experience includes some of the world’s sexiest, most talented dancers who have worked across the globe with the likes of Rita Ora, Kylie Minogue, Charli XCX, Cody Simpson, Guy Sebastian, Backstreet Boys, Ray J, Jason Derulo, Pitbull, FloRida, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and the Jonas Brothers to name a few.

Magic Mike Live: how the 'feverish spectacle' survived a pandemic – and made it to Australia

Channing Tatum proclaimed his touring smash hit ‘a dance show you can actually touch’. How will it move audiences in a Covid-safe world?

Magic Mike Live doesn’t seem like the kind of show that would survive a pandemic.

The global dance spectacular, inspired by the 2012 film of the same name, has been described as a “feverish spectacle”. The Australian production houses sweaty dancers, screaming women and an international crew inside what’s said to be the largest spiegeltent in the world: a tent that’s been hand-built and shipped by boat from a small village in Belgium.

This time last year Channing Tatum announced the local run of shows surrounded by a dozen shirtless male dancers in Melbourne’s crowded Plaza Ballroom. “It’s a dance show you can actually touch,” he boasted. “Don’t forget that.”

Just a few months later the performing arts industry was shut down, borders were closed, and touching muscly strangers – as Channing Tatum wanted us to do – became a criminal act. Miraculously, the tent will finally open next week.

But audiences should expect some clear directions about what they can and can’t touch .

Building a ‘modern-day Eden’

Magic Mike Live started as Channing Tatum’s running joke on the set of the first film: what if we actually toured a stripshow? It’s now a blockbuster franchise with productions in Las Vegas, London and Berlin.

Australia was the next wild plan. Tatum wanted to tour with an elaborate spiegeltent that would travel from city to city. A local cast was trained and Het Spiegelpaleis – a 100-year-old, family-run Belgian business – was commissioned to build the venue. It was named The Arcadia, “because it’s like a modern-day Eden”.

In February, everything was ready to go for a May premiere. The cast and crew travelled to the small village of Oostmalle to put the finishing touches on The Arcadia and rehearse. They even put on two invite-only performances for the locals as word spread about town.

It turns out that was a hot ticket. No one has seen the show since.

As production supervisor Don Gilmore puts it, “we’re building this worldwide extravaganza out here in the middle of the cornfields ... [and then] the world changed into a completely different place. A show of this type and this complexity under the best of circumstances, pre-Covid, was a difficult undertaking. There was nothing easy about it. And then you add the past nine months into the mix.”

Those nine months have involved rolling contingency plans for opening night – jumping from Melbourne to Perth to Sydney – and complex new issues around visas, safety restrictions and storage.

The Arcadia was on the ocean when the pandemic hit. The US-based crew had to deal with 28 marooned sea containers in Australia while also furloughing shows in London and Berlin and managing construction on a new venue in Las Vegas.

“There was enough cash on hand to manage the crisis ... but with Covid, no one really knows [what could happen next],” Gilmore says. Opening night, he says, will be “hugely emotional” for the cast and crew.

“It was on again, off again, on again, off again, and the clock was ticking and the [cash] reserves were drying up … The effort and talent and dedication it’s taken to get us to this point: I have to tell you, I have never seen anything like it.”

Socially distanced pleasure

Magic Mike Live will also be emotional for its audience, many of whom have not experienced a live show in nearly a year.

Alison Faulk, the show’s co-director and choreographer – who also choreographed the original film – wants to put people at ease. She says there’s a reduced capacity crowd; a social bubble for the cast and crew including weekly Covid tests; and, most notably, all interaction between the dancers and audience is capped at 1.5 metres.

“Everything we do is safe,” she says. “The way we explain it in the show is kind of fun, it doesn’t take you out of the moment.”

“I’m just really happy to put some love and light and fun back into the world. After this crazy year, I can’t wait to see the people in the audience experience a live show. And not just any live show, but one that’s tailored for women. It’s literally tailored for pleasure.”

Gilmore agrees: “I think it is definitely the anti-Covid show – in all respects.”

Magic Mike Live is certainly tailored for pleasure, but it will be interesting to see how it fares without physical intimacy. In the audition process, the dancers were judged on their ability to connect with a woman during a lap dance and how they spoke about their mums. They were always expected to get up close and personal.

International versions of the show have even featured a slow dance with members of the audience. Faulk says that women have become emotional with the men in these moments: “Some women say things like ‘I just got divorced and I really needed this’. Some women have had husbands that passed and say ‘I haven’t hugged a man since my husband has passed’.

“We still have a version of that [in the Australian production],” she says. “It’s not that, but I think it is really special as well … You still get to be a part of the show.”

“The year has been so dark. It’s just been so dark . I just cannot wait to put a smile on people’s faces.”

Magic Mike Live opens in Sydney on 20 December; it will be in Melbourne from June 2021

Melbourne fans it is finally your turn! Following a much celebrated season in Sydney, Magic Mike Live has finally touched down in Melbourne. And in very exciting news, after that they’ll be bringing The Arcadia, and the incredibly talented men that currently call it home north, to Brisbane this November.

By now you’ve seen the films (probably more than a few times), but the live show is an evening you have to experience for yourself. Based on the hit movies Magic Mike and Magic Mike XXL and conceived and co-directed by Channing Tatum himself, Magic Mike Live  has been described as nothing less than a thrilling, sexy, live dance and acrobatic spectacular.

The show is currently wowing audiences in Sydney before landing in Melbourne’s Birrarung Marr from Tuesday 8 June 2021. And in absolutely huge news that we know you’ve all been waiting for – Magic Mike Live will call Brisbane’s Eat Street, Northshore home from Tuesday 23 November.

Magic Mike  film choreographer Alison Faulk (whose other credits include working with Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Missy Elliott, and P!NK to name a few) is not only choreographer but also co-director of the production – so you know you’re in good hands.

What safety measure are in place at Magic Mike Live ?

Your safety is our priority.  Channing and the entire creative team have developed a plan to make sure the show is not only more fun than it’s ever been…but also safe for the cast, crew and most importantly, the audience. The Arcadia and will operate in accordance with the requirements of the State Government’s advice at the time of the performance. Social distancing measures have been put in place within the venue to ensure the health and wellbeing of patrons. Please observe all signage and guidance from staff. The Arcadia has a contactless payment system only. Cash payments will not be accepted.

What if I’m feeling unwell prior to my Magic Mike Live performance?

If you have tested positive for COVID-19 or are waiting for a test result, or become ill and are required to self-isolate, please contact us 24 hours prior to the show by  clicking here  and we will be happy to exchange your tickets for a future performance.  If a suitable performance cannot be found you are eligible for a full refund. If you have cold or flu-like symptoms on the day you are due to attend a performance please do not attend the show.  We will provide a dedicated Box Office number to call up to 2 hours prior to the show start time for an exchange or refund. 

Is Channing Tatum in Magic   Mike   Live?

Tatum is the director and creator of the show and does not appear in it, but as Tatum often says, he “can’t wait until he’s in Magic Mike shape” so he can perform in the show. He also loves to surprise audience members by turning up at shows every now and then, so do keep an eye out.

What is Magic Mike Live ?

Magic Mike Live i s a first-class entertainment experience based on the hit films Magic Mike  and Magic Mike XXL . The show features the hottest and most talented men from around the world performing in front of, behind, above and all around the audience.

Is  Magic Mike Live  a typical male revue?

No. It is a high-end production show in a state-of-the-art venue with some of the most talented dancers from around the world performing amazing choreography amidst over-the-top production values. It’s a place where audience members can feel what it’s like to exist in a world where their desires are heard…a place where they feel comfortable and proud.

Is there an age requirement ?

Guests must be at least 18 years old to attend the show. Patrons will be asked to present valid photographic id.

How long is the performance?

Magic Mike Live is 90 minutes long.

What should I wear ?

Audience members are never guaranteed to be selected for the audience participation numbers, but wearing trousers certainly increases your chances of being pulled on stage. There is no formal dress code for the show, wear whatever makes you feel comfortable, sexy, and ready to have a good time.

Are there special effects that occur during the show?

The production does use strobe lighting as well as theatrical smoke throughout the performance.

KITWANA ' KIT' CLARK, 24

Originally a footballer player at Ferris State University, Kitwana 'Kit' Clark  has since traded the field for the stage. 

Over the past two years, he has worked with the likes of Nicki Minaj, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, MC Hammer and The Jonas Brothers. 

Kit has also performed at the Billboard Music Awards and the MTV Movie Awards.

Sam Marks began his career as a child in the musical theatre productions of Les Misérables, Singin' in the Rain and The Wizard of Oz.

Sam is the co-director of Rhythmism Tap Co. based in his home state of Queensland.

New Zealander  Nathan Kara  is a dancer, actor and stunt professional.

He has worked as a dancer and choreographer on several music videos since 2013, including Walk Alone by Rudimental ft. Tom Walker.   

He also appeared as a trainer in the TV series Power Rangers Dino Charge in 2016.

CHARLES BARTLEY, 29

Dancer and choreographer Charles Bartley  was a runner-up on Channel 10's So You Think You Can Dance Australia in 2009. 

He performed in Fame in 2010, was a featured dancer in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby in 2013, and has worked with the likes of Kylie Minogue, Kesha and Rita Ora.  

More recently, Charles performed with Usher on the RNB Fridays Live 2018 tour.

CHRISTOPHER VAN DOREN 

Gold Coaster  Chris Van Doren  is a regular on Australian television, having performed on The X Factor, The Voice, The Masked Singer and Australia's Got Talent.

He has also appeared on stage with Kelly Rowland, Taylor Swift, Rita Ora, Ricky Martin, Jason Derulo, Kylie Minogue, Jessica Mauboy and Havana Brown.

DAYTON TAVARES, 23

Australian dancer   Dayton Tavares performed Electricity from Tony Award-winning musical Billy Elliot at the White House in 2010.

He had performed in Billy Elliot as a child, before being invited to join the cast of the successful Broadway adaptation.

Dayton has since worked with artists like Ricky Martin, Kelly Rowland and The Black Eyed Peas.

JAKE PAUL GREEN 

Originally from Perth, Jake Green  kicked off his professional career as a resident dancer on The X Factor.

Jake's career has seen him work as both a dancer and choreographer, with artist such as Kelly Rowland, Ricky Martin, Charlie XCX, Red Foo and Delta Goodrem.

He is also an actor and model.

The Weeknd Cancels Australia and NZ Tour

In a disappointing blow to fans, The Weeknd has officially called off his highly anticipated Australian and New Zealand tour.

This announcement comes as no real surprise after the tour was initially postponed indefinitely in 2023, only weeks before he was meant to kick off the Australian leg in Brisbane with no explanation.

The multi Grammy award winner and Super Bowl halftime legend had multiple shows scheduled in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland as part of his ‘After Hours Til Dawn’ stadium tour.

While no reason for the postponement and now cancellation have been given, logistical challenges and ongoing uncertainties stemming from the global pandemic are likely factors.

Ticketek said in a statement that ticket holders will be receiving full refunds and then went on to tell fans that they want to “work through the rescheduling process with the artist”.

For fans who had been eagerly awaiting the chance to see The Weeknd live in concert, the disappointment is real. The Australian and New Zealand leg of the tour promised to deliver memorable performances and unforgettable moments, making the cancellation all the more disheartening.

The only shining light for those who held onto their tickets since the postponement in 2023 is if The Weeknd does announce a new tour down under, they will be eligible for a special priority purchase of the new tickets.

As the music industry continues to navigate the challenges posed by the global pandemic, cancellations and postponements have unfortunately become all too common. Australia’s most anticipated men are heating up the town Magic Men’s “FEEL THE MAGIC” showcases it’s most talented men in a heart-stopping live performance. MAGIC MIKE LIVE Comes to Brisbane

Conceived and directed by Channing Tatum, Magic Mike Live is a night of 360-degree entertainment based on the hit movies. 

From 23rd November 2021 Magic Mike Live will be housed in the world's largest Spiegeltent, The Arcadia, that has been specifically designed and built for Australian audiences. This two story venue, which will make Northshore Hamilton its home, features a glass lobby, custom bars, indoor/outdoor lounge area and has been configured to ensure the comfort and safety of all patrons.

Conceived and directed by Channing Tatum , Magic Mike Live is a night of 360-degree entertainment based on the hit movies.

Creator and Director Channing Tatum said "The morning after we opened our first production in Vegas four years ago, we all talked about the crazy idea of someday putting Magic Mike Live in a tent and traveling around Australia. The fact that it's actually happening now is mind-blowing to me. The tent and this new version of the show is more than I ever imagined it could be and I can't wait for our fans in Australia to see what we've created especially for them."

Guests are welcome to arrive early and stay late to indulge in the unique indoor-outdoor atmosphere and specialty cocktails at any of the lobby bars. Bottle service, Champagne, Sparkling Wine or Rosé Wine, and other beverages are available throughout the show and can be ordered right from the guest's seat. The Producers are also delighted to announce they have joined forces with Pernod Ricard Australia who are supplying the company's beverage products within The Arcadia.

While the production for Australia is all-new, Magic Mike Live has been a fixture on major television shows around the world such as Ellen, The Today Show, Graham Norton , The Late Show with James Cordon, Germany's Next Top Model, Comic Relief, and Britain's Got Talent where Magic Mike Live sold over £1m of tickets in 60 minutes following its performance. Magic Mike Live went on to achieve one of the 10 largest advances in West End history at the Hippodrome Casino in Leicester Square.

If you’re feeling a little warm under the collar, there’s a good chance it’s due to the absolute heat coming off the trailer for Channing Tatum’s third—and apparently final—turn as good-hearted ecdysiast (that’s “stripper” to you and me) Mike Lane. Get your tipping dollars ready because Magic Mike’s Last Dance is gyrating into cinemas on February 9, 2023.

Has it really been 10 whole years since we first met Mike in 23012’s Steven Soderbergh-directed Magic Mike ? Soderbergh sat out 2015’s Magic Mike XXL , with frequent collaborator Gregory Jacobs taking up the directing reins for the road trip sequel, but he’s back in the saddle for this one.

We find our boy Mike back in Florida and down in the dumps, working bartending gigs instead of shaking his money maker. However, a chance encounter with a wealthy socialite (Salma Hayek Pinault) soon has him jetting off to London to put on the show of a lifetime. It’s Magic Mike ’s last shot at greatness—can this most erotic of exotic dancers stick the landing?

Well, yes, probably: these are defiantly feel-good films, after all. The Magic Mike flicks are celebrations of not just sexuality, but specifically female sexuality—they celebrate the sensual in a way that few films do, and it’s hard not to appreciate these joyous explosions of eroticism no matter what the angle of your dangle is. Heck, the scene in Magic Mike XXL in which Joe Manganiello cheers up a bored service station attendant with an impromptu in-store strip tease is one the sexiest and funniest moments in film history.

Manganiello is not returning for this one, it seems, and specific plot and further casting details are being kept under wraps. But it’s clear from the trailer that fans of Mike’s earlier exploits are going to find a lot of fun here.
