Master’s Keep Voyage captures the hallmarks of both bourbon and rum making and reflects Eddie Russell and Dr. Joy Spence’s more than 80 years of combined experience in crafting exceptional spirits. To begin, Dr. Joy Spence hand selected some of the finest casks from the iconic Jamaican rum house Appleton Estate – these casks previously held 14-year-old pot still rum and were chosen for their potential to best complement the bold top notes and rich caramel undertones of Wild Turkey’s extra-aged bourbons. The casks then made the voyage to the Wild Turkey Distilling Co. in Lawrenceburg, KY, where Eddie Russell hand selected a batch of 10-year-old bourbon that had been aged in Wild Turkey’s classic No. 4 char barrels. The bourbon was finished in the rum casks in the heat of a Kentucky timber rickhouse, resulting in a tropically influenced American icon bursting with a palate of fruits, caramel and aged oak with a warm, long-lasting finish of chocolate and spice.

Review: Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage

For its latest installment in the long-running Master’s Keep series, Wild Turkey is taking us on a voyage. A voyage to where? Jamaica, where rum casks have been brought in to finish its classic Kentucky bourbon. Made in a first-time collaboration with Appleton master blender Joy Spence , the whiskey starts as a 10 year old bourbon before being finished in casks that previously held 14-year-old Appleton rum. (No word on the length of the finishing.)

So them’s the basics. Now let’s dig into the box and bottle to see how it fares.

There’s definitely a hint of the rum right from the start: The nose is sweeter than any Wild Turkey expression you’ve ever had, well-spiced with clear raisin notes paired with banana-walnut bread, then a rumbling note of barrel char. With time in glass the whiskey blows off some of its heavier fruit elements, with a lingering touch of creosote hanging in the air.

The palate is again quite sweet and very fruit-forward. Fans of Wild Turkey may be taken aback by its power and expressiveness. You may even be forgiven for thinking this might be a whiskey-finished rum rather than the other way around. Again, bright notes of raisins, toasted nuts, and some coconut notes pop immediately, followed quickly by citrus and stone fruit elements. Surprisingly acidic, almost sour on the finish, there’s a bold, fermented cherry quality that sticks with you and feels more like its part of a cocktail than a straight whiskey. In some ways, it reminds me of WhistlePig’s insane Siren’s Song release from last year — though here some restraint has been exhibited. Hints of cocoa on the finish balance out some of the fruit, and while it’s enduringly sweet throughout, it never comes across as overblown.

I feel like I could sip on this all day, and to be honest, I kind of did. Whiskey season is just about to get started, but this is an early Top 10 candidate, for sure. Question: Would it be crazy to use this as the base for a Mai Tai? Wrong answers only.

Annnnnddd here we go again, this time with the latest special release from Wild Turkey : the Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage. Projected to be the 2023 limited release Master’s Keep, details are still a little blurry. Thanks to filings with the Tax and trade Bureau, we have a little sneak peak.

Wild T urkey Master’s Keep 2023: Voyage

According to the labels, Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage is going to be the familiar Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, this time finished in Jamaican Pot Still Rum Casks ( 2023’s Unforgotten was finished in rye). Distilled with the rest of Wild Turkey bourbon in Lawrenceburg, KY, this special release will also be non-chill-filtered (NCF) and bottled at 106 Proof (53% ABV). The tasting notes on the label tease a Master’s Keep with spice, tropical dried fruit, caramel, chocolate, and aged oak.

Will Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage Be Available in NC?

This annual release is always heavily allocated, but Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage will definitely make its way to North Carolina ABC stores sometime, likely the fall, of 2023. How each local ABC board chooses to distribute said release is always a big question. We’ll update out NC ABC Stock page as soon as it hits the state warehouse.

As of now, there’s no official announcement on price or MSRP, but previously Master’s Keep releases have retailed around $225 in North Carolina.

“ Let me hear you say, this s*** is bananas! B-A-N-A-N-A-S !” The 2023 Wild Turkey Master’s Keep release “the Voyage” is one of the sumptuous bourbons I’ve had the privilege of trying and channels those Gwen Stefani’s l yrics like they were was meant to be its theme song.

My journey with “the Voyage” started on a warm September evening at a curated bourbon tasting I arranged for 12 friends. Fortunately, I had just visited my editor and founder of The Whiskey Wash, Nino Kilgore-Marchetti . A tall man with perpetual scruff, Nino is a stoic but good humored individual, channeling an energy that is part wartime correspondent and part whiskey sommelier. He somehow always gives you the impression that he’s seen things you can’t handle and that you actually know very little about whiskey.

In his small but cozy office, decorated with whiskey bottles, maps, and the tops of kegs emblazoned with the logos of distilleries, Nino had prepared my review materials (booze), and in the middle, in turquoise blue, was the latest Wild Turkey Master’s Keep release: Voyage. Not believing my luck, he went on to tell me that, yes just like King Arthur of old, I had pulled the sword from the stone and got to review this once in a lifetime whiskey. I practically ran out with the bottle, lest he realize his mistake that I was in fact not qualified to review anything, and decided to crowdsource my review. I wanted to see what the masses, or at least my masses, thought of this philosopher’s stone.

About 12 hours later, amongst curling cigar smoke and comfortably arranged around my 7-piece Grenada outdoor sectional (FYI, white is not a good color for hosting cigar nights), we cracked open the artfully designed glass bottle and passed it around. For a minute, we sat in silence as the cragged faces, etched with lifetimes of stress from work in the criminal justice system, chewed on the bourbon. With serene majesty, the grizzled defense attorney nodded and said “Bananas. I taste bananas.” The veteran police office piped in, “B-A-N-A-N-A-S, this s*** is bananas.”

And just like that, the spirit of Gwen Stefani passed from one man to another, until the subsequent music choices closely resembled a 2005 high-school prom.

The flavors my friends had astutely identified come from Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage’s barrel finishing, a former cask of Appleton Estate Jamaican Rum. The practice of barrel finishing is relatively new to bourbon. Despite having been around since around 1789 , bourbon is still a junior of the spirits world. Not only are other whiskies older, Scotch since the 15th century and Irish whiskey since the 12th century , but bourbon was also developed and marketed as an everyman’s drink , a no nonsense drink designed to be accessible to the average American and absent the bells and whistles of luxury whisky.

Finishing bourbon really got noticed for the first time in 2011 with Angel’s Envy port finished bourbon, and now is a common feature in limited releases, seasonal releases, or even some main line expressions.

These finishings are clearly becoming bolder as the choice of Jamaican is especially daring, as it is known for its unique and pungent flavors. It is high in esters that result from an uncontrolled fermentation process using dunder (the left-over liquid in a boiler after rum distillation) and muck (basically a soup of bacteria, sugar cane, dunder waste, and acid) that are mixed in, resulting in a “funk” smell of tropical fruits, overripe banana, and exotic spices.

The marriage of “funk” and bourbon could not have gone better for Wild Turkey. By almost unanimous opinion, the Voyage was the most surprising and well liked whiskey of the night at my tasting, with the sole outlier being an exclusive scotch snob whose opinion we can disregard for this review. I am in hearty agreement and while I would usually balk at a $275 price tag for a bourbon, this would certainly be a spectacular centerpiece to your collection and a superb whiskey to boot.

Tasting Notes: Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage

Vital Stats : 10-year-old bourbon finished in Appleton Jamaican rum barrels. 106 proof (53% ABV). $275/750ml.

Appearance : Rich orange, lighter than other bourbons of similar age.

Nose : Noticeable hazelnuts, orange peel, and maple syrup appear, but of course so do bananas. Nutmeg with a tiny bit of oak flit around the edges.

Palate : Ripe bananas richen to a nice smooth bourbon flavor of cedar box and cinnamon. Toffee cooked apples pop in, leading to a fine finish of molasses and pecans.

Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage Review

Most people have the impression that the Master’s Keep Limited Edition line is designed to highlight the best and brightest bourbon (and rye whiskey) that Wild Turkey has. After all, it’s the most allocated and expensive release that comes out of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky each year. But that’s actually not the point of the label. It’s to showcase unique expressions that are only limited by imagination.

Wild Turkey has traditionally been a producer that only concerned themselves with how good their bourbon was. With the exception of a few flavored bourbon releases – which have specific clientele anyway – they never used to take chances with weird blends or barrel finishes. That all changed in 2018 when Master’s Keep Revival came out. It was the first time a bottle wearing the Wild Turkey name was finished in a secondary barrel – Oloroso Sherry to be exact.

Master’s Keep did it again in 2021 with the release of “One” which saw fully mature bourbon finished in newly toasted and charred oak barrels. The trend continues with the 2023 release of Master’s Keep Voyage.

Campari orchestrates a collaboration between brands.

It’s no secret that many spirits conglomerates have requested that their brands begin special collaboration projects with each other. The reason is twofold. The first is to create new products where there were previously none and the second is to lure consumers who might only drink one kind of spirit into a new category (if they like the end product, that is). There is also a third reason, but it’s more complex.

Don’t be fooled by elaborate stories that marketing teams create about why two different kinds of spirits get married together – it’s all marketing. The honest truth is that some bean-counter out there with a background in transportation and logistics realized that they were essentially wasting money by transporting barrels one way with nothing on the return trip. This is what’s known as deadheading; when an empty container gets shipped back to where it originated.

Since rum, tequila and Scotch companies depend on a steady supply of used barrels. Bourbon distilleries are constantly shipping out their used cooperage to them. There isn’t usually anything that these transport carriers would haul back from those producers which leaves the logistics chain with a burdensome task of finding other goods to stick in the shipping containers. As the global economy expanded at a furious pace at the turn of the millennium, efficiencies in global supply chains necessitated empty containers must be filled with something. Thus began the chain of events that saw producers adopting barrel finishing techniques to their whiskey. Those finishing barrels typically come from various spirits and wine producers. It was a win-win for producers and supply chains.

All of that is a complicated way of saying that Campari looked at their family of distilleries who were receiving freshly dumped Wild Turkey barrels and arrived at the idea of a rum-finished bourbon. It would be as simple as tossing some of those rum barrels into a shipping container for the return trip. And which rum producer does Campari own? Appleton Estate.

Cool Runnings and the Bluegrass State

Unfamiliar with rums? Then you might not want to start with Jamaican-style ones. Why’s that? Because most are super funky. Those strange funk notes can be attributed mostly to Dunder Pits , which is a whole other topic I recommend you look up. But Appleton Estate makes rums that are less funky than other producers on the island. As a side note, if you’re ever looking to get into rums, start with Foursquare. It’s the most bourbon-like rum I’ve tried so far.

Anyway, getting back to Appleton Estate, the barrels that were sourced from them had just matured rum inside of them for the last 14 years. Once they were dumped, they were sent up to Lawrenceburg to have 10 year old Wild Turkey bourbon added into them. The finishing process took only 5 weeks.

At this point, it all sounds like a pretty standard story of how bourbons get finished. Even the Wild Turkey bourbon that was used seemed pretty middle-of-the-road for this release – using barrels that weren’t too old and weren’t too young. Previous releases wore pricetags anywhere from $120 to $200 so Voyage should land somewhere around there, right? WRONG.

Master’s Keep Voyage landed with a $275 thud onto shelves around the United States in July, 2023. Nary a reviewer or comments section has been able to look past this glaring anomaly. What on earth caused the price to rise so dramatically? This is far from the oldest bourbon that Wild Turkey has used and the rum casks, if we’re being honest, are nothing special. I’m sorry if that last one stung, but I’m just calling a spade, a spade.

I’m dumbfounded myself. If a bottle of Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel is $70 and a bottle of Appleton Estate 12 Year Rum is $45, then how did the pricing team arrive at $275 for this release? I don’t even have to taste this edition of Master’s Keep to tell you that unless you’re buying it strictly to flip (and hopefully you have a buyer who has a pre-approved loan in their hand to afford this), there is really no reason to buy this for the price.

I understand that this release will still sell out everywhere, but enthusiasts will only accept a price like this once or twice before they throw in the towel and stop buying them. Then they’ll begin to set on the shelves. I hope to be a little bit more even-handed in this review, but still, if you’re a person that goes out and buys this and doesn’t have that little bit of regret in the back of your mind after you open the seal, then you must be very wealthy.

Now that I’ve got that out of the way, I may as well see how this tastes. I sampled this neat in a glencairn.

Tasting Notes

Nose : The nose seems to bypass the fact that this is a bourbon underneath the finish. There are tropical fruits everywhere. Banana, mango, pineapple and citrus flesh . There is an oak note, but it comes off as old and spongey . Is that even a thing? I’m also picking up on a lot of sweet banana bread (with nuts) scents. This is something I’d normally find in a Jack Daniel’s Barrel Strength Rye. I love it there and I love it on this nose too.

Palate: Each sip delivers plenty of sweet, fruity flavors. Baking spices come by way of cinnamon spice and allspice. Sweetness sidesteps the typical Turkey caramel and becomes more of a molasses instead. The baked nut bread note from the nose can be found on the tongue. The fruits are varied and delicious. Rhubarb jam, baked apples, citrus and pineapple. All have the vibrancy – almost artificially I’d say – of a Jolly Rancher candy. The funk of the rum can be found if you concentrate hard enough, but it’s hardly what I’d call polarizing. It’s just nice to find.

Finish: Baking spices remain at the forefront of flavors when the sip is complete. Banana bread flavors complete the trifecta – I’ve noticed them on the nose, palate and finish. The nuts evolved into more of a pecan style rather than peanut and the fruit flavors turn from tropical to tart with raspberries becoming dominant. I don’t know where they were before, but they’re here now.

Score: 8.1/10

Out of all the rum-finished whiskies I’ve had (that total might only be 3, haha), this one tastes like it’s the best interpretation of what the finish was supposed to taste like. Other whiskies I’ve had taste artificially flavored. Others lack any rum flavors at all. So Voyage gets an A+ for execution in my book. It was also very enjoyable to drink overall.

The faults that Voyage have might not seem particularly harsh. One fault is that the rum finish has hidden most of the trademark Wild Turkey bourbon notes. While that’s not entirely a bad thing, I’m wondering if another brand of (cheaper) bourbon could have been finished in these Appleton barrels with similar results. And if that’s the case, then what if we could just finish that bourbon in these barrels and get a product that costs way less?

And that’s where my feelings lie when I think about Voyage. Yes, it’s a really nice product. I’ve rated it as “Great” and that’s not something I give out lightly. But it seems like most of the bourbon notes that identify this as a Wild Turkey product have been covered up. And if it doesn’t resemble a Wild Turkey product, then why does it need to have that kind of price tag?

In the end, it all comes down to price. Master’s Keep Voyage is great product, but I’ve had better. $275 is a lot of money and I’ve enjoyed many whiskies just as much that were far cheaper. Maybe you’re a person that demands that their bourbon tastes like a rum. This is your bottle. But to everyone else who is willing to pay a slight upcharge for a unique annual product, trust me, there are better ones out there.

Had a sample that I tried 3 times the course of 6 weeks. To sum it up: smells like a rum (raisins and maple syrups) and tastes like a bourbon (brown sugar and sweet oak) but it certainly does not warrant the new price point.

Wild Turkey’s Newest Master’s Keep Bourbon is the 1st Rum Finished Whiskey in the Brand’s History

On Thursday, Kentucky whiskey brand Wild Turkey announced the latest bourbon in its annual, limited-edition Master’s Keep lineup: Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage. The launch marks the first time Wild Turkey has released a whiskey finished in rum casks.

Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage is a 10-year-old bourbon finished in Jamaican rum casks from Appleton Estate . The whiskey was crafted in collaboration between Wild Turkey Master Distiller Eddie Russell and Appleton Estate Master Blender Dr. Joy Spence.

“Every year, we look forward to the release of Master’s Keep as an opportunity to rethink what our bourbon can be,” Wild Turkey’s Master Distiller Eddie Russell said in a news release. “Creating Master’s Keep Voyage in collaboration with Dr. Joy Spence was a real privilege, and I think our shared passion for telling a story through our spirits comes through in this one-of-a-kind whiskey.”

Spence selected the rum casks — which once held 14-year-old pot still rum — used for the finish. According to the brands, the casks were chosen to complement the “bold top notes and rich caramel undertones” of Wild Turkey’s aged bourbon.

Russell selected a batch of 10-year-old bourbon aged in No. 4 char barrels and finished them in the rum casks.

“With Voyage , we set out to develop a spirit that allows the notes of the rum and bourbon to work in harmony,” Spence said. “By aging Eddie’s hand-selected batch of 10-year-old bourbon in the finest casks we have at Appleton Estate, we were able to achieve a new level of flavor that gives whiskey and bourbon lovers a new way to enjoy their favorite drinks.”

Bottled at 106 proof, Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage will be available at select retailers starting in July at a sugggested retail price of $275 per 750-milliliter bottle.

Wild Turkey launched the Master’s Keep series in 2015. Each release is highly limited.

HOW WE MAKE OUR MASTER'S KEEP 17 YEAR

17 years old and hand-selected by Eddie Russell for their perfectly balanced flavor, the barrels of this Master’s Keep release were aged in both brick and wood rickhouses. Eddie knows that the more consistent temperatures in the brick rickhouses give the bourbon a mild, earthy taste profile—while the greater temperature variations in the wood rickhouses allow the liquid to absorb more of the vanilla, caramel, and oak flavors from the oak bourbon barrels. Although this Master’s Keep went into the barrel at 107 proof, its unique aging process produced a lower bottle proof of 86.8. With attention to the smallest details brought by each and every barrel, Eddie Russell has truly crafted a one-of-a-kind bourbon with this 17 year old masterpiece.
