Materials & Durability

Before I start raving about the organizational side of the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack , let’s first take a look at what it is made of and if it is built to last.

Even with a deep dive into what this travel backpack is made of, the only answer you can find is polyester. There is no reference to denier rating or whether the polyester is coated, it just says polyester.

Polyester is an excellent material for a travel backpack to be made of. It is hard-wearing, naturally water-resistant, and abrasion-resistant. But, it is hard to tell how good it is without a denier rating which denotes thickness.

One thing I can say is that the main part of the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack is thick and tough. It is a backpack that is built to last and can look as good as new after up to 4 years of use, which is incredible considering the price.

The straps, however, can rip and tear quite quickly in some cases, but this is rare. The metal zippers are reliable too but they can unzip on their own, which can be a little infuriating!

So, you have loaded up the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack with everything from your laptop to tablet, phone, laptop accessories, clothes, and travel documents, is it comfortable to carry? Let’s have a look.

Firstly, this laptop backpack only comes with shoulder straps. There is no waist strap or sternum strap, which goes hand in hand with the price, but does this affect comfort?

The back panel is padded for back support and comes with a multi-panel airflow system to ensure that you do not overheat when walking around an airport or to a meeting. The soft multi-panel ventilated padding is excellent.

The straps are adjustable and well padded. For most people, this makes the backpack comfortable to carry around when fully loaded. Some people with larger shoulders may find that the straps are a little thin and dig into them a bit!

If you are traveling with a small suitcase as your carry-on luggage , the handy pass-through luggage strap means you can slide the backpack onto your wheely suitcase. This makes navigating busy places and standing in queues a lot more comfortable.

Finally, the backpack also features a foam padded top handle for grab-and-go situations, like moving through security.

Storage Space & Organization

This is the category where the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack really shines. Let’s take a deeper look!

Storage Space

This is quite a small backpack with just 28 liters of packing space which is spread over 3 compartments. It is very much the perfect size for work and short trips away, it is not a backpack that you can throw everything in for a week away!

It works perfectly alongside a small carry-on suitcase but standing alone, you are going to struggle to squeeze in enough clothes for more than 2 nights away.

Organization

This backpack has more pockets than you can shake a stick at. Let’s work from the back to the front so you can get an idea.

The back compartment is a padded laptop compartment that will hold a 15.6-inch laptop, any size laptop above this, like a gaming laptop will not fit. Inside you will also find a tablet sleeve and you can secure your 15-inch laptop with the velcro strap provided.

Next up is the main compartment which has enough space for clothes, camera gear, headphones, and more, just not too much of them. Here is where you will find the link to the external USB charger port where you can connect a battery pack to the built-in charging cable inside!

Yes, this is a backpack with USB charging. The built-in USB charging port sits on the outside of the backpack and you can plug into the USB charging port to charge your phone or tablet on the go!

The front compartment is an organizational panel with a key fob hook, pen pockets, sleeves for your phone, and space for notebooks too.

Then you have the side pockets which are great water bottle holders and can hold larger reusable bottles too. To top it off, there is a small front stash zipper pocket and an anti-theft pocket built into the back panel which is great for valuables like your passport and wallet.

As you can see there is a pocket for everything in this backpack so keeping your things organized is about as easy as it gets. With smart extra features like a hidden pocket for valuables and a USB port, it is a hard backpack to beat!

Versatility

Versatility is a category where the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack doesn’t do so well, and the reason why is in the name.

The is a bag designed to help you travel with your tech to work or on planes and trains with organizational efficiency. It is incredibly fit for this purpose but it is not made for much else.

If you were to take this bag hiking and it rained, everything would get wet. It is not waterproof, and while the polyester fabric is water-repellent, the seams and zippers are not. Water will seep in with ease.

Overall these bags are great to travel and commute with but not much else. This is fine with us as that is exactly what they are made to do.

Value For Money

When it comes to value for money, these backpacks are honestly hard to beat. The retail price is just $30, which is about as affordable as backpacks get these days, but, you are getting a load more with this one.

Between having a compartment or pocket for everything to being a backpack with USB charging, an anti-theft pocket, that is comfy to carry, and made from durable tear-resistant polyester, it is an absolute bargain at this incredible price.

The Matein Travel Laptop Backpack has done pretty well on our rating system getting a score of 76/100.

The only place where it lost some points was in the storage and versatility category.

Having zips that unzip by themselves will get annoying and it is a laptop backpack for travel through and through, it is not for any other adventures.

Overall, we love the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack as it comes with everything a travel laptop backpack should have, and for an amazingly affordable price.

To be so affordable and have the features of a backpack that costs 4 times as much is pretty amazing.

Between the organizational system, multiple compartments, and more pockets than you can bother to count, to the padded back panel, solid straps, and durable build, it is very hard to beat.

The only downside is that the affordability does give rise to some quality issues like the zippers undoing on their own, straps fraying on occasion, limited space for clothes, and it not being so versatile.

But, for $30, all of these are things we can happily live with!

Matein Backpack Review: The Perfect Travel Backpack

I’ve needed a new backpack for a while now. After so many destinations and so many miles, my trusty pack is starting to look like Indiana Jones’ worst nightmare. It was never anything special to begin with, but it became my constant companion. I’ve been trying to ignore that widening rip on the side that I keep bandaging with safety pins. I keep ignoring the fading blue exterior that was once so vibrant in its infancy.

But I can’t have her for much longer. As much as I’ve grown attached to this hunk of fabric that has held my worldly possessions so lovingly for so long, I need to find another. And quick! Because I’m flying across the country to do a solo hike and my current backpack will simply not stand for another bout of abuse from the overstuffing and inclement weather.

My Old Backpack

Luckily, I’ve found the perfect replacement. After much research online and checking out disruptors, I’ve discovered and love the Matein Travel Backpack . This backpack is far more advanced than my current bag in every way. It’s a travel backpack, but it can be used for just about anything. After landing a new job in tourism management, my search preferences changed slightly. This new job will require me to carry a laptop from time to time, along with a camera. I wanted to find a backpack that had the security and durability as something you would need to take on the train every day to work, but also look and feel like a backpack that you could take on a hike.

My good friend good and contact who helped me land this new job recommended the Matein Backpack. She actually uses the Matein Slim Travel Laptop Backpack , but I tend to overpack, so I got the larger of the two. The larger Matein Travel Backpack also has more features, including one of my favorite design concepts with the built-in combination lock. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten to bring or lost the lock for my old pack. This feature easily allows you to lock your back with a combination code.

This backpack has a sleek design and dark color making it a stylish piece for both men and women. It’s extremely light in my hand for its size and holds all of my stuff beautifully. The main compartment is roomier than it looks on the outside and holds all of the clothing needed for a long trip.

There is a separate, well-padded compartment in the main to hold your laptop and other devices, so if you happen to drop it on the floor, it will protect them nicely. A somewhat unique feature is the centrally located straps which provide better weight distribution for your back. Most other backpacks have the straps located on the sides where they can shift unevenly. The light-colored interior makes it easy to find that item in dim light, and the top grip handle is good for quick jaunts when you don’t want to throw it over your shoulder.

The clean lines of this backpack hold everything you need for short or long trips and have many different compartments for your various accouterments. Most fans of the Matein Backpack appreciate the roomy main compartment, which serves a myriad of purposes. Anything from electronics to a week’s worth of light clothing can be stored easily and securely. There is a smaller zippered front pocket for grabbing smaller items quickly, and the long shoulder drop means it can adjust to fit most people comfortably, with surprisingly good weight-distribution.

Matein backpacks are a fairly new company, founded in 2016, however, their backpacks have excellent reviews on Amazon .

With all of the Matein Backpack’s features, it’s competitively priced on Amazon , making it a smart investment compared to similar backpacks in the marketplace. It’s versatility make it a great piece for multi-use. However, if you’re looking for something more travel-based and don’t plan on bringing anything but a camera, I would suggest reading our review on  Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Pack , I different style, and something I did look at, but I went with the Matein Backpack.

Matein Mlassic Travel Laptop Backpack review

Many refer to it just as the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack, but Matein’s most beloved product is officially named the Mlassic Travel Laptop Backpack.

My first impression? 

It looks well-built and super great quality, so we were excited to receive and test it out.

Let’s look at it closer…

How well made is the Mlassic Travel Laptop Backpack?

The bag is made from a durable, water-resistant polyester fabric, which feels very solid and strong to the touch.

Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised at how well-made everything was.

The stitching is tidy, the handle on top is very sturdy, and the padding is incredibly comfortable.

In addition to the quality material, this backpack exudes thoughtfulness—every aspect of the design has a functional and practical purpose.

We’ll talk about the different compartments and pockets in more detail in a bit, but one feature I adore includes the vertical strap on the back.

This feature is meant to secure the backpack easily over a suitcase for when you’re in an airport and have multiple luggage to handle.

I figured this would also be perfect for those of you doing sports. For example, you can easily slide in a barbell pad.

The metal zippers are great too and unzipping them are easy and smooth. I also like how each zipper is engraved with the brand name, which gives it a premium feel.

I genuinely struggled to find any wrong thing about this bag, as I really do love it.

If I had to nitpick, the material inside does look kind of cheap at first glance, especially with its crinkly, sort of water-resistant texture.

But it does mean it’s easy to clean if there’s a spillage, so what initially appeared like a drawback is actually a good thing.

How comfortable is the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack?

If we were going to use the Mlassic as an everyday laptop backpack while travelling , it has to be super comfortable .

The first thing I noticed is that this bag has what feels like the comfiest padding ever !

The back provides plenty of support and cushion for your back, which is crucial if you’re carrying the backpack for hours at a time, especially when you travel.

With that said, there is still enough airflow for a breathable surface so that your back won’t get sweaty. All thanks to the innovatively soft yet thick multi-panel ventilated padding.

This u-shaped three-dimensional ventilation design maximizes air convection and heat elimination too.

This mesh padding also gives really good support for your upper and lower back.

A travel laptop and all its accompanying gear are heavy and I often find that some backpacks can dig into your shoulder and chest after a while.

But Matein ensures that the soft back padding continues on the inside of the chest straps to prevent this problem.

The straps are also adjustable so you can easily adjust them to your build and height. While this is by no means a revolutionary feature, it’s still very useful!

What makes the Mlassic a great travel laptop backpack?

What exactly makes the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack so good at what it does?

1. Multiple compartments and organizational features

Its multitude of pockets and compartments is truly one of the bag’s biggest strengths.

In fact, it reminds me of a Mary Poppins bag—the more I looked at it, the more there was to discover!

There’s of course the laptop compartment and main compartment for packing your daily needs and tech accessories.

The laptop compartment includes a strap attached to a lycra material, although I would’ve loved for this to be adjustable so the laptop can be secured more safely.

When I placed my laptop here, there was some extra space which made it move around within the compartment.

But setting that aside, the lycra is actually of great quality and sticks really well. It’s hard to pull off and does its job at securing your valuable electronics well.

In the next compartment, you’ll find two separate netting pockets, which I really liked because they offer more organization than just one big compartment.

Plus, it also makes your items feel more secure and less cramped.

These are great places to store delicates (for travellers) or stationary and equipment (for students and office workers).

Each of these pockets also has an elastic top that helps keep the content in place. I would’ve preferred for these to be more elastic though.

And the photos we took don’t do it justice, but this pocket has amazing depth. It’s so deep and wide that you can fit A LOT here.

On the side of the bag, there are two meshed pockets . These are great for water bottles and compact umbrellas.

But its best part is actually in the front organizer, which comes with three front compartments that can be used for all sorts of items.

There’s even a keyring here!

And a handy trick I discovered for extra security: you can loop the keyring through the front zippers so that it will be harder for thieves to open up.

Not to mention a hidden pocket at the front , which can be quite useful too.

Speaking of hidden compartments, there’s an extra secret pocket at the back with generous padding. I didn’t feel any difference in the support even when I put multiple items here.

Meanwhile, the backpack straps also hold an additional plastic keyring , which is a really nice touch.

This a great place to attach things you want quick access to, like a bike padlock or even climbing quickdraws.

Overall, Matein has done a phenomenal job of thinking about each pocket and how to make them very functional for everyone, from students to travellers alike.

2. USB charging port

The bag features a built-in USB charger outside and charging cable inside, which provides a handy way to charge your phone while on the go.

I found that the additional access point at the side is very useful so you can still use your phone for GPS or other things even when it’s connected to a charger inside.

One thing to note is that this backpack doesn’t actually provide power, but simply offers easy access for charging!

While that would’ve been a cool tech feature to have, it would no doubt drive the price thorough the roof.

3. Anti-theft pockets

Matein doesn’t market this as an anti-theft bag , but I definitely think it offers enough accessories and hidden pockets that make it a solid and safe backpack to use.

First is the fact of its simple and non-flashy style, which won’t attract attention when you’re walking in the streets.

The main anti-theft pocket I really liked is the compartment behind the padding on the back, which is impossible to access by thieves when you’re wearing it.

This is great for keeping valuables like your passport, credit cards, cash, and jewelry.

Moreover, it’s rare to get hidden pockets in a backpack of this price range. So that’s a huge plus!

I’d also apply my own locks to the zippers for additional security.

4. Durable and water-resistant material

I’ve talked about the well-made aspect of this bag earlier, but just have to reiterate its sheer durability.

The polyester fabric here has really good quality that’s durable and water-resistant.

If you’re ever caught in a light rain, you can be assured that your laptop and electronics will be safe inside.

However, remember that it’s not waterproof!

Your things will remain dry after a small spillage if you clean it fast, but a huge spill can seep in over time.

5. TSA travel backpacks

Check-ins in the airport can be a hassle and we love that this backpack also takes TSA into account.

You can open the compartment up to 180 degrees for a quick check through security.

Trust me, if you’re a constant traveller like us, it’s always nice to ensure the process is as fast as possible.

Who should get the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack?

I feel like the reason why the Matein backpack is so popular is because of its versatility.

Anyone who has to carry a laptop around will find this backpack a wonder.

That includes university students, office workers commuting in the city, or digital nomad travelling the globe.

It’s as good for backpacking as it is for professional business use, teen and adults, men and women.

Basically, I think the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack is great for anyone who wants a sleek and simple laptop backpack with high quality and fantastic organizational compartments.

Should you buy the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack?

The answer is a resounding yes.

It’s comfortable, looks good, has plenty of separate compartments, an anti-theft pocket, and USB port.

I personally adore this bag as both a travel and everyday laptop backpack.

The best thing is that it comes with a perfectly reasonable price tag .

It’s not expensive at all while still offering quality build and thoughtful features, and I see it as an excellent investment that can last you a long time.

You can get the 17” variety if you have a large 17 inch laptop, or go for the more compact 15.6” one if your laptop’s smaller!

That said, for those who prefer bold and eye-catching designs, you may not like this fairly basic and nondescript style.

And if you’re travelling with a camera, you might be better off getting a camera backpack instead.

These Backpacks and Duffels Meet Frontier and Spirit Airlines’ Strict Personal Bag Rules—and They’re Under $35

These bags might be small, but shoppers are amazed by how much they can fit inside.

I absolutely love to travel anywhere and everywhere, and I get so excited when it’s finally time to start packing for a trip . Even though I’m always excited for my vacations to start, the one thing (other than flying) that causes the most anxiety for me is fearing that Frontier will flag my backpack for its size (even though that’s never happened to me—anxiety rarely makes sense). If you also have upcoming trips where you’re flying with Frontier Airlines or Spirit Airlines, I thought I would flag five personal bags that meet both airlines’ tricky size requirements that you can scoop up. And they’re all under $35 at Amazon.

According to Frontier Airlines , personal bags “can be no larger than 14 inches tall, 18 inches wide, and 8 inches long.” The key thing to keep in mind is the bag you bring with you must fit under your seat and within the airlines’ “bag sizer.” Spirit Airlines requires that bags meet the same sizing requirements as Frontier Airlines, but they also note that the inches allowed include “handles and wheels.” And both airlines will measure bags they’re questioning. I’ve watched fellow travelers have to pay hefty fines at the gate because their personal bag is too large for the metal sizer and is instead categorized as a carry-on.

Thankfully, there’s an easy way to skip the bag size stress, and it’s by purchasing any of the five Amazon options highlighted below. Each backpack or duffel will pass the sizing test of both airlines as long as you keep one thing in mind: Don’t overstuff your bag.

Wandf Foldable Duffel Bag

Similar to the duffel mentioned above, the Wandf bag also meets Frontier and Spirit Airlines’ personal bag requirements because it’s 17.7 inches by 12.6 inches by 6.3 inches. It also has a front zippered pocket to keep must-haves safely tucked away, and the brand points out that it’s made from nylon for extra durability. The weekender also boasts a travel sleeve on the bag that you can easily use to slide it onto a suitcase handle. And you can fold it up when you’re not using it, which makes it easy to put away after traveling. The duffel has nearly 11,000 five-star ratings and almost 1,700 perfect reviews . “I used it for a week trip to Florida and fit all my clothes and shoes,” said one reviewer , while another shopper added that their loved one borrowed the duffel and called it a “Mary Poppins bag” because they could fit so much inside.

“Most recently, I was able to carry two days of clothes, laptop, make-up bag, two small purses, [and] a denim jacket, and still had plenty of space to store things,” wrote one shopper who has flown on Frontier and Spirit Airlines with the Matein laptop backpack. It’s the top-seller in Amazon’s Laptop Backpacks category with 79,000 perfect ratings and a whopping 16,900 five-star reviews , and it’s available in 17 colors. The backpack measures 18 inches by 12 inches by 7.8 inches, and it has three separate zippered compartments and a luggage sleeve on the back. The laptop sleeve accommodates a 15.6-inch computer, the open middle compartment is ideal for clothes, and the smaller front pocket can easily hold your phone, tablet or Kindle, headphones, and additional small essentials. The other bonus about the backpack is it has a built-in external USB port, which you can use to connect your phone and external battery for on-the-go charging. 

Wonhox 16.9-Inch Travel Backpack

Packing a backpack can feel like a game of Tetris because the zipper rarely goes all the way down, but this personal bag solves that problem. The main zipper goes around the perimeter of the bag to allow you to open it completely, which is such a packing game changer. It measures 16.93 inches by 11.8 inches by 7.9 inches, and it even includes a laptop compartment for up to a 14-inch computer. You’ll also find additional zipper pockets inside the main section, as well as a separate shoe compartment and a smaller front pocket. Plan to choose your favorite from 10 color combinations. 

Many personal bags on Amazon are priced under $35 and offer plenty of storage and spots to safely stow away laptops.
