TUI Cruises -- a joint venture between Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and German shipping and travel giant TUI AG -- christened its first ship, "Mein Schiff," in 2009. The ship serves German-speaking cruise travelers, from families to couples to older folks.

The story behind the unusual name? TUI Cruises held a contest to determine the ship's moniker, and more than 11,000 people sent in over 30,000 suggestions. The winner was Mein Schiff, which translates to "my ship."

Mein Schiff will be familiar to some cruisers -- it was transferred to TUI from sister company Celebrity Cruises, for which it sailed as Celebrity Galaxy beginning in 1996 (Interestingly, Galaxy was actually built in Germany at Meyer Werft).

Following the handover from Celebrity to Tui in March 2009, work began on a 50 million euro conversion, which included the addition of more than 200 balcony cabins (As Celebrity Galaxy, there were just 220 balcony cabins). The ship also now boasts spa cabins and family suites.

Mein Schiff's livery is one of the most unique in cruising, with huge calligraphy-style writing along the side of the hull designed to evoke "emotional associations with maritime holidays," according to TUI Cruises.

Mein Schiff features 13 lounges and bars, as well as a refurbished sushi restaurant and a steakhouse. Passengers can relax as there is no need to book for dinner -- all dining is open seating. Wine and beer with dinner are included in the fare.

One very European touch is that every cabin features an espresso machine to help provide that kick-start to the day.

Other highlights of the ship include a 1,700-square-metre spa area boasting recliners for relaxation; private spa suites; and a 2,200-square-meter pool deck with private cabanas.

What a total disaster

What a total disaster, so you book a cruise with stops at invagorden, Shetland and Orkney islands to be told when you arrive at Shetland island you cannot get off due to no availability for any excursions it lets you book your holiday but went you try to book excursions they are fully booked 2 months previously no warning of not being able to get off the ship , never again tui

Charged £500.00 extra for cancelling a cruise

After reading The Tui Coronavirus - Visit Travel With Confidence page, we did not fell safe and decided to cancel the cruise we had booked , We are charged £500.00 extra on top of the deposit £250.00 which was paid when the booking was done ,Absolutely disgusted and this will be the last time we dealt with Tui , Please think twice and read all the reviews when you book a holiday with Tui, never again,

The cruise by itself was not bad but…

The cruise by itself was not bad but the fact that we were forced to do shopping from only certain shops was terrible. The guides the busses and the company gets a lot of black money from the cruise tourists shopping from these shops that they mainly have Chinese products . We were informed that even ex Greek ministers take their cut from this fraudsters. I will not be back for sure since they braucht us in a shop in Greece during the pandemic and we stayed for half an hour!!ins a small shop 40 people. In order to take their cut they don’t care . Filthy scammers.

Booked my holiday cruise and stay on line and paid next day called they told me i could not have the holiday as there was no accommodation left on the ship and told me it would take 10 to 20 days to return my money will never touch them again they should be ashamed no holidays for me this year thanks to them😡😡😡

6 month wait for a refund - disgraceful

We booked a family cruise Spanish delights for 19th May this year for 8. This was paid for in full in March 2020. Unfortunately due to Covid-19 the cruise was cancelled. IT IS DISGRACEFUL that we are still awaiting a refund - 6 months later. We will never book with TUI again.

returned from a two week cruise 0n 20th…

returned from a two week cruise 0n 20th of august 2019left our baggage outside cabin door as instructed by tui staff, went to collect our luggage at port to find a bag had gone missing, been trying to get a reply from tui upto todays date 16th of september 2019 and cannot get any response from them this multi million pound company is a complete joke and obiviously the do not care at all about there customers, avoid this company if you want all your belongings returned if not they WILL be stolen and not returned

Recently booked a cruise with Tui only…

Recently booked a cruise with Tui only to find out that a fit to fly covid antigen test MUST be taken after 21.00hrs on the day before the flight to join the cruise. Okay if you live in the U.K. as the test can be posted to you prior to the flight. We live in Cyprus therefore cannot receive this postal test. Test centres in Gatwick close at 21.00hrs, the last test available at 20.20hrs. What are we to do? Tui will not, unreasonably, allow us to take a test earlier than their strict guidelines. Tui state that their rules are based on the U.K. and other governments requirements. Not so! Spain and the U.K. governments state that a test must be done within 24hrs of arriving in Spain (Canary islands). Help! Where do we stand on this?

tui discovery xmas and new year far east cruise 2019/2020

have just been on tui discovery far east cruise and were notifed 4 days before the holiday we would be missing xmas and new years bad destinations i.e sailing not as the holiday was booked due to mechanical problems a problem which has been going on for months the money we were offered as a percentage was an insult as a regular cruise user tui are by far the worse the captain was smug and patronising the food was on a level with poor pub grub despite contacting tui twice we have received no response from tui in a month i would never never use tui as a holiday company again my advice would be to use another company that is competant and can provide a decent standard of holiday

I booked a cruise today on marella…

I booked a cruise today on marella discovery going to the Baltic's. I booked via an agent, nevertheless this will get almost £4000 from us. I was expecting tui to email me details for me to log on so I could book excursions, which I will be spending several hundred pounds on. I did have a tui booking ref but did not receive an email . I rang tui and was very abruptly told that if I had booked via an agent then it was nothing to do with them ???? She told me I could only book excursions whilst on board and if I wanted to do anything regarding the cruise not to contact them. Extremely unhelpful. I rang the agent and they gave me the tui web page to book excursions, why couldn't the tui agent have done that?

Fleas and Cold Food

Honestly the worst holiday I have ever been on. Booked a 4 star all inclusive cruise, costing almost £400 a night for 2 adults. Flight worse than budget, booked a window seat to be presented with a wall, windows at every other seat, not even a seat pocket to put my book in, even a drink was payable. Boat was dirty in places, stank of sewerage, air con broken in cabin and stuck on cold, took 3 days to fix it. Food was cold and for the vegetarian in the party just unappetising and repetitive. Tour was a complete rip off, and to top it all we found fleas in our cabin. You complain and they fob you off, you complain in writing and they do not respond. It was like a floating travelodge on the M6, never again with TUI, they are a disgrace.

Warning!! Tui Are appalling when things go wrong!!

Warning!!! Be careful about leaving your luggage with Tui staff. Ours was dropped into the sea and not only was a bespoke suit costing £800 trashed the £40 special suit hanger went missing when they took the suit to be cleaned. Turns out they just dried it out never went near a cleaners and returned it to my cabin wardrobe hoping I wouldn't notice! Customer Liaison Officer was pleasant enough but did nothing to resolve the issue although he agreed that the suit was heavily stained. Had it cleaned myself when I got home but too late to save it. The dirty water in the docks and the time lapsed meant damage was irreparable. It is 103 days since it was dropped into the sea and they still haven't done anything except offer a £100 voucher off the next holiday. Come on Tui you ruined the suit is it not fair that you deal with the issue.

Above and beyond Restaurant manager Julian helped solo travellers on a Christmas cruise navigate Covid regulations, and still have a wonderful week. His understanding, patience and help was above and beyond. We were in safe hands, and we are discussing booking again for 2022 on Explorer, Marella.

I am writing a review here since it is IMPOSSIBLE to contact anyone at TUI and non-one ever replied to my post on social networks. So, I reiterate my comments. I am EXTREMELY upset with TUI at the miment: I do understand the exceptional circumstances. I do understand that there are thousands of people to be contacted. I do appreciate that the cruise was cancelled because of the Coronavirus. However, my cruise was supposed to be on 1st April. It is now 17th April, I still have not got my money back. We received an email today stating we can get a coupon and wait for a refund for a year. Is that a joke??? The cruise was fully paid. It is a LOT of money at stake. The cruise did not take place. I am NOT interested in your coupon. I want my money back NOW. You were very quick to charge us for the cruise. So, you should be just as quick to refund us. What you are doing, TUI, is borderline honest. If we do not get our FULL money back within the next week, we will contact Consumers’ Protection Association.

Excellent everything.

We have just returned from a holiday in the Caribbean where we spent a week Island hopping and a week in Barbados. The Explorer 2 was absolutely wonderful. Service, cabin (with balcony), food, drink and crew were all amazing and topped by exemplary cleanliness. It is a holiday that we will most certainly do again even in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic. Captain Watkins kept us well informed and at no time did we feel threatened. Well done indeed.

Just back from 2 week cruise on…

Just back from 2 week cruise on Celebration. Good cabin accomodation and generally everywhere was kept clean. All staff very friendly but the Horizon bar staff where brilliant 10 out of 10, Roger Orly Made Eric Goce Luwis and not forgetting Sidney who changed ship after first week. Entertainment good but the band spots particularly Band Jam in Liberties should be longer.

Great cruise. Not one complaint.

My partner and I recently did the Eastern Med (Adriatic Affair) on the Marella Celebration. What a wonderful week it was. Every single one of the staff were friendly and helpful, the food was great and each city we visited was a fantastic experience. Will def be booking with them again! Thanks to the team on board!

Just got back from 7 night cruise on…

Just got back from 7 night cruise on Marella Explorer Tenerife. We have cruised before with P and O, MSC and Royal Caribbean. This was by far the best value, relaxed and friendliest we have done! Could not find any fault, the staff were so helpful, happy and friendly. At the end of cruise there was a lot of uncertainty amid the Coronavirus scares, the captain kept us fully informed of what was happening and it was clear he supported his staff in helping us. We are already looking at booking again. Thank you Tui for amazing holiday!

Just got back after a week on Tui…brilliant cruise let down by tui reps

Just got back after a week on Tui explorer 2 cruise and it was brilliant the only downside was you have a quite a long walk from the airport to the bus station and then on your way home we got stuck in a coach car park for 45 MINS when we finally got into the airport we were called to go to gate 12 everyone stood around for over a hour and there was no tui reps to inform us what was happening we finally got on the plane a hour late Naples airport is a nightmare far rather fly Palma if your going on a cruise

The Mein Schiff 6, the fourth ship in the MS3 class, distinguishes itself externally from its prototype because it does not have an indoor pool, and on the inside because many interior spaces have been redone. It is a beautiful ship, organized in a simple but refined manner. On board there are many different dining options, a large unisex Spa as per the German tradition, and a VIP area. It should be remembered that this Tui Cruises class has the longest pool ever built on a cruise ship, at a length of 25 meters. Review of mein schiff 9.

The 2026-built TUI Mein Schiff 9 cruise ship ( currently on order ) has as sistership Mein Schiff Relax/fka Schiff 8 (2025). Both liners are from the new InTUItion-Class (originally "TUI XL-Schiff" series).

TUI's Schiff 9 is currently scheduled for delivery in 2026-Q2 (April-May-June), while Schiff Relax will be inaugurated in 2025-Q1.

The vessel (IMO number 9862669) will be Malta- flagged (MMSI tba) and registered in Valletta .

Due to the global impact of the COVID crisis, TUI Schiff 9's construction start was postponed as well as the ship's delivery - from 2026-Q1 (January-March) to 2026-Q2 (April-June).

TUI's two newbuilds (Schiff 8 and Schiff 9) were ordered in July 2018 and their construction started in June 2022. Unlike TUI's sisterships built by Meyer Turku Finland , both new units are Fincantieri -built (at Monfalcone Shipyard near Trieste, Italy ). These are TUI's first LNG-powered vessels and also the fleet's largest by design (160000 GT-tons/volume) and passenger capacity (~4100 passengers plus ~1100 crew/staff).

History - construction and ownership

TUI Cruises is a UK-based joint venture cruise company (50-50) of TUI Group (British-German travel and tourism corporation) and RCCL-Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (USA-based passenger shipping company). TUI started cruise shipping operations in 2009, targeting predominantly the German-speaking market with a premium travel vacation product. German and English are the main onboard languages on all TUI Schiffs (ships). TUI's sister-brands are Marella Cruises UK and Hapag-Lloyd-Cruises .

Mein Schiff 9 has 18 decks and max passenger capacity ~4000. Around 90% of all passenger staterooms are outside and around 80% of the cabins are with step-out balconies.

In comparison to Schiff 1, Schiff 9 has some improvements in onboard amenities and technology (energy efficiency). The vessel has the most- advanced scrubber/exhaust cleaning system that reduces SOx emissions by nearly 99% and NOx emissions by 75%. The ship also has an Aqua Park (with waterslides) and an Activity Deck (with Rope Course).

Decks and Cabins

Over 80% of TUI Schiff 9 staterooms (2050 total) are outside. All suites and family cabins have Xbox 360 video gaming consoles. The largest cabins are the 2-deck Himmel-Meer Suites with rooftop terraces. For families are the comfort category Verandah Deluxe. Spa Balcony cabin passengers enjoy exclusive spa facilities access.

All staterooms offer as standard amenities 2 single beds (1 double bed), bedside cabinets (with drawers and reading lamp), sofabed (or 1-2 Pullman beds), smart HDTV (satellite reception, infotainment system with on-demand movies, Internet, ship info channel), direct dial phone, wardrobe, electronic safe box (in the closet), minibar, Nespresso coffee machine (2 capsules are included per day), water carafe with glasses, mirrored dressing table (writing desk) with chair, en-suite bathroom (WC, shower, single-sink vanity, hairdryer, bathrobes, slippers, bath products - shower gel, shampoo, conditioner), individually controlled air-conditioning, 24-hour room service.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

The food in the large Anckelmannsplatz buffet restaurant is all included in the fare. Schiff 9 also has a bakery for freshly prepared complimentary tarts and paninis. Atlantic Restaurant is divided into 3 themed restaurants and offers Asian, Mediterranean or 5-course meals (all complimentary). Gosch Sylt is a seafood restaurant. Bistro offers light snacks. At extra charge are Hanami (Japanese restaurant), Richards Restaurant and Surf and Turf (steakhouse restaurant).

On July 13, 2018, the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri was awarded an order from TUI Group for the construction of two new-design cruise ships ( LNG-powered - by Liquified Natural Gas). The vessels (volume 161000 GT-tons) are the largest and most advanced in TUI's fleet. The order was based on a Fincantieri prototype (Project XL-Schiff) aiming at energy efficiency (via reducing fuel consumption) and minimizing the vessel's environmental impact according to IMO's latest regulations. The order for both units was signed by Wybcke Meier (TUI's CEO) and Giuseppe Bono (Fincantieri's CEO).

Like the company's previous shipbuilding orders , the TUI XL-Schiff project (the two-ship InTUItion-Class series) was financed with ~80% debt-financing and 20% funding by TUI's own investment funds.

Schiff Relax and Schiff 9 are the fleet's largest as well as TUI's first LNG-fuelled and with shore-power connectivity . The design's added length allows bigger passenger capacity , substantially redesigned indoor spaces, adding new facilities and attractions. TUI ships' percentage of German travelers is ~80%.

The vessel's construction (Fincantieri Monfalcone yard number/hull 6313) officially started on June 22, 2022, with the steel-cutting ceremony held at the Monfalcone shipyard. The special event was attended by Wybcke Meier (TUI's CEO) and Luigi Matarazzo (Fincantieri Merchant Ship Division's General Manager and New Building Navi da Crociera's Director).
