Frequently Asked Questions

Covid test site results.

We thank all members of the community who have taken the time to get tested.  This is vital to keeping our community safe.

The response time for receiving a test result may vary depending upon whether you have symptoms or not, and the volume of tests the labs needs to analyse.  We ask that you be patient. However, if you  haven’t received your test result after 3 working days please contact one of the following pathology labs directly, according to where your test was conducted:

I have symptoms. How do I go out for testing?

If you have any symptoms, you should put on a mask (if you have one) when you go to get tested. This will help prevent spreading the infection to others. If you need one, you will be given a mask to wear by your doctor when you are tested. Avoid using public transport, taxi or rideshare services.

A suspected case is someone who has symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) and who has been tested but has not yet found out the results of the test.

If you have symptoms and are advised to do so by a doctor or healthcare worker, you should return home immediately after the test. There is a risk that you could have coronavirus (COVID-19) and could spread the virus to other people. You must remain in self-quarantine at home until you find out your test result.

For more information, read the  factsheet for suspected cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) . To get further advice, call the 24-hour coronavirus hotline 1800 675 398 or your general practitioner.

What do I need to bring with me?

You need to bring your Medicare card.

If you don’t have a Medicare card then bring one form of identification, like your driver’s licence or student ID.

Is the test free?

Yes, the coronavirus (COVID-19) test is free for everyone. There is no fee for the test when you get tested at a public health facility, mobile testing centre or GP offering bulk billing.

Can I take someone I care for to get tested?

If you usually provide care or assistance to someone who may otherwise have difficulty getting tested, such as an elderly relative, you may take them to a testing centre.

What should I do after getting tested?

If you have symptoms, or are being tested because you are a close contact of someone with COVID-19, you must return home immediately after the test. Do not make any stops on your way. There is a risk that you could have coronavirus (COVID-19) and could spread it to other people. You must remain in self-isolation at home until you find out your test result.

For more information on self-isolating, visit  https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/self-quarantine-coronavirus-covid-19 .

There is no need for others in the house to quarantine unless you are confirmed to have coronavirus (COVID-19). As always, we encourage anyone with symptoms to get tested, so if anyone you live with experiences symptoms they should get tested too.

How long does it take to get the results?

It usually takes  THREE (3) to FIVE (5) days  to get your results after being tested. Due to the volumes of test it may take a little longer.

What happens if I test positive or negative (normal)?

You will be contacted by phone or SMS to inform you of your results, regardless if it is positive or negative.

If you test  positive (you have COVID-19) , whether or not you have symptoms, you must immediately self-isolate. You will be contacted by a public health worker from the DHHS for advice on the next steps.  A doctor/GP from DPV Health will also contact you.

If you are unwell, please contact your usual GP via telephone. If you are having trouble breathing or have serious concerns, please call 000 .

For further details contact DPV Health by calling 1300 234 263 (push 1 for Medical) .

Testing of asymptomatic travellers for COVID-19 is conducted by one of our specially trained pathology collectors, at one of our   Travel Collection Centres , where strict health and safety protocols are followed.

Important:  By accessing our patient portal you agree to our   Terms and Conditions   and the points below:

  • COVID-19 tests for travel are for asymptomatic travellers ONLY (I have not experienced any COVID-19 symptoms in the last 14 days, including but not limited to, fever, cough, sore throat, or shortness of breath).
  • I have not been in contact with a positive COVID-19 case, or a returned overseas traveller, in the last 14 days.
  • COVID-19 travel tests are not eligible for a Medicare rebate.
  • When ordering your test, please ensure you use the name that appears on your passport.
  • When ordering your test and creating your account, you MUST use your Australian address (or where you are currently staying in Australia). Overseas addresses will not be accepted.

  • If my test result is negative but I develop COVID-19 symptoms prior to my departure, I agree to seek medical advice as to whether I am fit to travel.
  • I understand that my test may need to be repeated or sent to another lab for follow-up testing due to an invalid/unclear result or technical error (occurs in less than 1% of COVID-19 test).
  • I understand that a negative test does not always mean that an individual does not have COVID-19 (the sample may have been collected too early following exposure) and a positive test does not always mean an individual has COVID-19.
  • The receipt/referral that you will be emailed after purchasing the test, must not be duplicated in any way. Duplication of a referral will result in additional fees and a delay in result delivery.

Testing for COVID-19

Actions for this page, on this page, where to get rapid antigen tests (rats), after your rapid antigen test (rat), pcr testing, where to get help.

Rapid antigen tests (RATs) are the easiest way to test for COVID-19.

You should get a test:

  • if you have COVID-19 symptoms, even if they’re very mild
  • if you have been in contact with someone who has COVID-19
  • before visiting a hospital, aged care facility, or disability care facility
  • before visiting elderly people, people with disability or people at higher risk of severe COVID-19 illness.

COVID-19 can spread before you have symptoms. You can protect others by checking that you are negative before you leave home.

Symptoms may appear any time between 2-14 days after being exposed to the virus. The symptoms to look for are:

  • sore throat
  • shortness of breath
  • fever, chills and/or sweats.

Some people may also experience headache, muscle soreness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, loss of smell and taste, loss of appetite.

You can buy RATs at supermarkets, pharmacies, and other retailers. You should plan ahead by keeping some at home for testing if you have COVID-19 symptoms.

Positive result

If your RAT is positive:

  • follow the Checklist for COVID-19 cases , including staying home for at least 5 days or until you don’t have symptoms anymore
  • check if you are eligible for COVID-19 medicines .

Negative result

If your RAT is negative and you have symptoms:

  • stay home until your symptoms go away
  • take a RAT each day over the next several days while you have symptoms
  • RATs can detect COVID-19 more easily when repeated over successive days but will not detect other respiratory viruses, such as influenza
  • if your symptoms worsen, seek medical assistance.

If you need a letter or other document of your result (such as for travel, medical, work, or educational purposes) you should contact a GP.

To get a PCR test:

  • Visit your GP External Link . They will decide if you need a PCR test based on your symptoms and medical conditions. They may give you a referral to a pathology collection centre.
  • If you have a referral from your GP, go to a pathology collection centre. Your GP should be able to tell you where your closest one is. Don’t forget to take the referral from your GP with you.

You may need to pay for your PCR test.

If you are eligible for COVID-19 medicine and you have symptoms, see a GP about a PCR test, even if your RAT result is negative. This is so you can get any help you need as quickly as possible. You should start taking COVID-19 antiviral medicine within 5 days of your symptoms starting.

After your PCR test

Go straight home and wait for your results. Your doctor or the clinic where you were tested will contact you by phone or SMS to tell you your results, regardless of if it is positive or negative.

You should get your test results within 2 days of being tested, but it sometimes takes longer. Contact your testing provider if you have not received your test results after 3 days.

If your PCR test is positive:

If your PCR test is negative:

  • you should stay home until your symptoms go away to avoid spreading your illness.
  • Visit your GP (doctor) External Link
  • Please keep Triple Zero ( 000 ) for emergencies only

Centers for molecular detection of Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), more commonly referred to as PCR tests, Antigen Tests, or Rapid Lateral Flow tests, can be found on this page. PCR Tests, (Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT–PCR) is a nuclear-derived technology for identifying the presence of specific genetic material in any disease, including viruses. It’s one of the most extensively utilized COVID-19 viral detection methods in laboratories. An Antigen test is a rapid diagnostic test suitable for point-of-care testing that directly detects the presence or absence of an antigen. Rapid lateral flow tests are required for UK travelers and involve rubbing a long cotton bud (swab) over your tonsils (or where they would have been) and inside your nose.

All Covid-19 PCR Test / Rapid Antigen Test / Rapid Lateral Flow test centers that appear in this list have been certified by the country´s state health department. If you need your Covid-19 diagnostic test prior to your flight, make sure to provide the exact name that appears in your passport (including middle name) and request a test certificate in English.

If you are on vacation or holiday and have symptoms such as fever, cough, tiredness, loss of taste, loss of smell, difficulty breathing, chills, sore throat, runny nose, headaches, chest discomfort, or diarrhea, it´s highly recommended that you conduct a Covid-19 test and auto-isolate till the results are back.

Prior to going for your PCR, Antigen, or Rapid Lateral Flow test, make sure to contact the laboratory and ask if you need to make an appointment or if they accept walk-ins. Some RT-PCR test laboratories offer expedited results (which may incur an additional fee). Not all Covid-19 diagnostic test centers are open on weekends, so plan accordingly and make sure to consult the lab prior to going for your Coronavirus test.

In case you found a mistake or want us to add more information about Covid-19 PCR Test / Rapid Antigen Test / Rapid Lateral Flow test , please contact us and we will be more than happy to share the additional information. It is important to mention that Pruvo has developed this database of Covid-19 PCR Test / Rapid Antigen Test / Rapid Lateral Flow test in order to help you save time and money when traveling abroad or back home.

Frequently asked questions

There are currently 4 approved COVID-19 vaccines for use in Australia:

  • Pfizer/Comirnaty vaccine
  • AstraZeneca/Vaxzevria vaccine
  • Moderna/Spikevax vaccine
  • Nuvaxovid (Novavax)

For the primary schedule, people aged:

6 months and over can have the Pfizer vaccine

  • For most people the Pfizer primary course is 2 doses, 8 weeks apart.
  • For children aged 6 months to under 5 years, the primary course is 3 doses, 8 weeks apart.

12 years and over can have the Spikevax (Moderna) and the Nuvaxovid (Novavax) vaccine.

  • For most people the Moderna primary course is 2 doses, 8 weeks apart.
  • For most people the Novavax primary course is 2 doses, given 8 weeks apart.

60 years and over can have the Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca) vaccine. 18 to 59 years can also have the Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca) vaccine, however, will be required to have an assessment of suitability by a general practitioner

  • For most people the AstraZeneca primary course is 2 doses, 4 to 12 weeks apart.

A primary vaccination course consists of 2 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. A third primary dose is the recommendation for people aged 6 months or older who are severely immunocompromised or have a disability with significant or complex health needs.

The booster dose is given 3 months or more after the primary course and is for people aged:

18 years and over, the recommendation is to have the Pfizer vaccine or Moderna Bivalent vaccine, regardless of which brand of vaccine you received for your primary vaccination course.

5 to 17 years, the recommendation is to have the Pfizer vaccine, regardless of which brand of vaccine you received for your primary vaccination course.

18 years and over, while not preferred, you can receive the AstraZeneca or Novavax vaccine

This booster dose will be the fourth dose for people who are severely immunocompromised, since the recommendation for this group is to receive 3 primary doses.

The 2023 booster dose is given 6 months after you receive your last COVID-19 vaccine dose or confirmed infection (whichever is the most recent) and is for people who are:

  • Aged 18 years or older
  • A resident of an aged-care or disability-care facility
  • ATAGI advises that children and adolescents aged 5-17 years who have medical comorbidities that increase their risk of severe COVID-19, or disability with significant or complex health needs should consider a 2023 booster dose. Please call to make an appointment with your GP to discuss the 2023 booster.

If you are aged 16 to 17 years, you can only have the Pfizer vaccine as your winter booster dose.

If you are aged 18 years and over, the Pfizer or Moderna Bivalent vaccines are the preferred vaccines.

If you are severely immunocompromised, this additional booster dose will be a fifth dose since the recommendation for this group is to receive 3 primary doses.

The Health Service, University of Melbourne, is administering the Comirnaty (Pfizer) and the Spikevax (Moderna) Bivalent as boosters. Regardless of which COVID-19 vaccine you received for your initial doses, you can still receive one of these as your booster.

A booster vaccination is still highly recommended, even if you have tested positive to COVID and have had a two-dose primary vaccine course. Depending on how many vaccines you have received will determine how long you are required to wait before receiving your booster. Please call to make an appointment with your GP to discuss.

The TGA report that most side effects are mild and go away within a couple of days.

For details on possible side effects for each vaccine, please see:

  • Comirnaty (Pfizer)
  • Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca)
  • Spikevax (Moderna)
  • Nuvaxovid (Novavax) .

If you are a domestic student or staff member and are registered or eligible for Medicare, please make sure your details are up to date with Medicare. You can do this using either your:

  • Medicare online account through myGov
  • the Express Plus Medicare app
  • calling the Medicare program

If you don’t have your account set up, you can:

  • Enrol in Medicare , if you’re not already enrolled.
  • Set up your Medicare online account if you’re enrolled in Medicare, but don’t have Medicare linked to myGov.

If you are an overseas student or staff member and not eligible for Medicare, you will need to obtain an Individual Health Identifier (IHI) to receive your COVID-19 vaccine as well as other vaccines, including the flu vaccine. Please click to get an Individual Health Identifier (IHI) .

Boosters are not mandatory, though it is highly recommended to have the 2023 dose to maintain best possible protection for you, your loved ones and the community against the virus and any new emerging strains.

The Health Service, University of Melbourne, is not currently offering COVID-19 vaccinations for children. Please check the Government website for information regarding providers.

Although it is no longer a requirement to have an IHI number to receive a COVID-19 vaccination it is beneficial as it will allow you access to your COVID-19 immunisation statement via the myGov website. If you are not eligible for Medicare, e.g. you are an international student on a visa, then you can  get an Individual Health Identifier (IHI) .

To find out  how to setup a myGov account if you require assistance with access to your vaccination record.

COVID-19 vaccines will be free for everyone living in Australia including citizens, permanent residents and most visa-holders. Those on visitor visas, electronic travel authority, eVisitor and Transit visas are currently excluded.

You will not need a prescription from a GP to get vaccinated.

If you have a Medicare card, please bring it with you.

Yes, you can have other vaccines at the same time as your COVID-19 vaccine. Please speak to your health care provider for any further information.

For the latest news and information about vaccines in Australia, visit the  Australian Government’s COVID-19 vaccine website .

If you are a Melbourne University student or staff member, please make an in-person appointment with one of our GPs. You will be required to bring a hard copy of your official vaccination record (translated to English) provided by your Country, that will state the COVID vaccination you were given along with the date your vaccination was administered and the batch number.  You will also be required to bring your passport for verifying your identity.

Please ensure you have your Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) number as we cannot upload your vaccinations to the Australian Government without one.

There are 5 ways you can show your COVID-19 proof of vaccination to gain entry to businesses and venues in Victoria.

  • COVID-19 digital certificate via the Service Victoria app
  • COVID-19 digital certificate saved to a smartphone wallet
  • Printed copy of COVID-19 digital certificate
  • Printed copy of immunisation history statement

That is not true,,,,

Testing centres have been overwhelmed by the number of people getting tested. They stay open until daily capacity is reached. The labs, while short staffed are open.

If travelling OS, Histopath is testing on the day. Friend who tested yesterday got results in 45 mins

https://www.histopath.com.au/locations/airport

Short queue, nurses were great with the kids, results back in 90 mins.

They open at 6am.

Our flight was at 8am, so we went there the day before to get our test.

A bit of a pain to go to the airport twice, but so much simpler than trying to get a PCR test anywhere else.

melbourne travel pcr test

Let us know how you go/went with that Colin?

I’m considering using Clinical Labs for my test, but I’ve read good things about Histopath at the airport, I just worry the queues will be long.

Hope all went/goes well for you!!

Unpopular opinion - Pretty insane how this has become normalized so quickly.

Seems to be a popular way to go Jordy

I’d walk in a tight rope naked Jordy of it meant I could travel again. I’m not too fazed about doing a Covid test if that’s what’s required. Obviously we’d all prefer not to have to do it, but hey, we will do what we have to in order to get back to doing what we love.
