Reflexión y emoción en el primer día del Mendi Tour Madrid 2023

Ayer, 16 de octubre, la parada del Mendi Film Tour en Madrid se estrenó con una sesión doble: una película reflexiva sobre la vivencia de la pandemia en la Sierra de Guadarrama y otra sobre la esforzada escalada en solitario de Charles Dubouloz a la norte de las Jorasses. Quedan otros tres días de cine de montaña por delante.

La sesión de inauguración del Mendi Tour Madrid , ayer 16 de octubre, coincidió con el 110 aniversario del RSEA Peñalara , tal y como recordó el presidente de la sociedad, Javier Garrido , en la presentación del acto. Peñalara y la firma Ternua son las principales patrocinadoras de este Mendi Tour Madrid, que cumple ya su novena edición.

El primer documental proyectado, con el título El retorno, un nuevo desafío de sostenibilidad, tuvo un carácter muy cercano para los asistentes, pues retrataba las semanas vividas en la sierra de Guadarrama durante el confinamiento por la pandemia y los días posteriores.

« Contemplar espacios como el puerto de Navacerrada sin el ruido de personas, de coches, de aviones, fue una experiencia sobrecogedora », explció el geógrafo y montañero Pedro Nicolás , una de las principales voces de la narración. El documental, de gran valor testimonial, cuenta igualmente con interesantes intervenciones de un sonidista de la naturaleza, dos escaladoras, la pintora de paisajes de montaña Julia Vallespín y otras personas vinculadas a la sierra que ofrecieron su visión sobre la experiencia de la pandemia en la sierra de Guadarrama. Ha sido producido y dirigido por Alberto Felechoso (Atrevida producciones) que estuvo igualmente presente en la presentación.

La segunda película, De l’ombre à la lumière (De la sombra a la luz) del reconocido estudio Davina & Sébastien Montaz-Rosset, profundizaba en la escalada del francés Charles Dubouloz , en solitario y en invierno, a la vía Rolling Stones de las Grandes Jorasses .

Una experiencia que le llevó a su límite, con cinco esforzados vivacs en pared, desgranada en el documental con imágenes intercaladas de su trayectoria, su familia, sus influencias más importantes (como el esquiador Stéphane Brosse ) y la visión del propio cineasta, Sébastien Montaz . « No son seis días lo que me ha costado hacer esta escalada, sino 32 años para llegar hasta aquí », explicaba un emocionado Charles en la cumbre de las Jorasses, por fin calentado por el sol tras seis días en la sombría y fría cara norte.

Tres días más de programación

Desde hoy martes 17 hasta el próximo jueves 19 de octubre la programación del Mendi Film Madrid sigue cargada de propuestas, con una decena de cortos, documentales y películas que se proyectarán en los cines Golem . Las entradas están disponibles a 6€ por sesión (taquilla y on-line):

Como primicia, el responsable de prensa del Mendi Film, Aitor Elduaien, nos adelantó que en el BBK Mendi Film estará presente tanto Edurne Pasabán , quien recibirá el premio Mendi WOP (The Walk On Project), como el japonés Kazuya Hiraide, que llevará el estreno mundial de su nueva película, Rope .

Los asistentes a las sesiones de cine del Mendi Tour podrán además participar en un sorteo esponsorizado por Ternua de dos noches de hotel para dos personas y dos conjuntos de ropa de Ternua para asistir al BBK Mendi Film, que se celebrará del 8 al 17 de diciembre en Bilbao.

La temporada 2023 del circuito itinerante de las mejores películas del Festival Internacional Mendi Film, conocido como Mendi Tour, llega con gran entusiasmo a la Fundación Vital Kulturunea en Vitoria-Gasteiz. Del 20 al 24 de marzo, los amantes de la montaña podrán disfrutar de la 11ª edición de este evento anual, que ofrece lo mejor y más actual en el cine de montaña.

El Mendi Tour 2023 presentará trece películas con temáticas de alpinismo, escalada, esquí extremo, kayak de aguas bravas, saltos BASE, exploración y naturaleza salvaje. Todas ellas fueron seleccionadas del Mendi Film de diciembre de 2022 y cuentan con grandes guiones, excelente fotografía y bandas sonoras emocionantes que transportarán al espectador a la aventura. El evento es recomendable para los amantes del cine documental, la gente montañera y el público en general.

Las sesiones de cine comenzarán a las 19:30h y las entradas, a un precio de 5€, ya están disponibles en la página web de Fundación Vital Fundazioa y en la sede de la Fundación en la Casa Cordón, así como en la taquilla durante los días del evento si aún hay aforo disponible a partir de las 18:30h.

Fundación Vital colabora con la asociación Mendi Film Festival en la organización del evento, y este año sumará dos nuevas sedes al circuito: Santa Cruz de Campezo el 22 de abril y Llodio el 19 de mayo, que se unirán a las antiguas sedes de Agurain, Murgia y Laguardia.

Cabe destacar que 9 de los 16 premios otorgados en Bilbao durante el último Mendi Film están representados con las películas programadas en el Mendi Tour 2023. Entre ellas se encuentran «From shade to light», «Egoland» y «Agur Artzai», cada una de las cuales recibió dos premios en Bilbao. También se destacan «Not Alone» y «This is Beth», protagonizadas por mujeres y premiadas en Bilbao.

El evento también contará con películas como «Creation Theory», del director Ben Sturgulewski, que fue galardonada con el Premio a la Mejor Banda Sonora del Mendi Film, y «Everest Sea to Summit», una de las películas más laureadas en la historia del cine de montaña. La película «Into the Ice» también es digna de mención, ya que se basa en la expedición homónima de exploración, ciencia y alpinismo a la Cordillera Darwin y será presentada por los geólogos y glaciólogos Ibai Rico y Eñaut Izagirre.

Por último, se destaca la película «Lobos», que cuenta con el apoyo de la beca Mendi Film Bizkaia Ternua y es dirigida por la barcelonesa Marina García Andreu. La película aborda los temores y las fantasías que genera la presencia del lobo en aldeas rurales asturianas.

Film registrations period opened for the BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia 2023

The deadline for film registrations for the 16th edition of the BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia festival is open from 31 March to 15 September.

The 2023 edition will be held between December 8 and 17. Interested producers, directors and filmmakers must present their works in the aforementioned period.

FILM SUBMISSION & RULES

All those works completed or carried out after January 1, 2021, whose theme is developed or related to the mountain, may participate: mountaineering, climbing, mountain and adventure sports, skiing, extreme sports, ecology, environment, ethnography, nature ...

€24,800 in prizes.  All the prizes of the Official Section will have economic endowment in addition to the "Eguzkilore" Trophy and "Txalaparta" Trophy.

In April, the International Underwater Film Series, CIMASUB, comes to Azpeitia and Hondarribia. Lovers of the underwater world will be able to enjoy the 4th edition in Azpeitia, thanks to the sponsorship of the Sustainability Department of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, which will take place on Wednesdays April 10, 17 and 24 at 19:00 hours in Soreasu Antzokia, while the 15th edition in Hondarribia, will be held on April 11, 12 and 13 at 19:00 hours in the Auditorium of the Itsas Etxea.

On Friday, the twenty-fifth edition of the International Underwater Film Series (CIMASUB) in Deba was unveiled. This February, the International Underwater Film Series, CIMASUB, will captivate lovers of the underwater world in Lasarte-Oria and Zarautz. The 16th edition in Lasarte-Oria will take place on Monday 12th, 19th and 26th February at 19:00 at the Manuel Lekuona Cultural Centre, while the 14th edition in Zarautz will be held on Wednesday 14th, 19th and 28th February at 19:00 at the Modelo cinema.

17 World premieres at the 16th edition of the BBK Mendi Film Bilbao Bizkaia

The Dock of the Bay Musical Documentary Film Festival will be held from June 3rd to 8th, 2024, and is now open for submissions to its official sections.

The Mendi Tour 2023 circuit, has once again reached all of Spain, starting from the Basque Country. Mountain cinema sessions have been screened in 53 towns and cities -last year there were 46-, attracting 14,000 spectators and a 25% increase on last season's figure.

In the 16th edition of BBK Mendi Film Bilbao Bizkaia, 57 films will be screened and there will be 3 exhibitions, 4 conferences. Edurne Pasaban will be presented with The WOP Mendi Film award. The Bilbao director Josu Martínez will present his second work in the Zinemira section of the San Sebastian Festival. ‘Mirande: film bat egiteko zirriborroa’, is a documentary coproduced by La Tentación Producciones and Gastibeltza about the controversial writer Jon Mirande, considered one of the most important poets in Basque literature of the 20th century. “Mirande is said to be a racist. A paedophile. A Nazi. A misogynist. Immoral. Every time he is mentioned, controversies flare up. We don't know what to do about him. I want to make a film about Mirande. But I don't know how. Perhaps the most interesting thing to do would be to let him have his say”. This is how Josu explains the work he will present at this Zinemaldia.

The feature film 'Bizkarsoro,' directed by Josu Martínez, will also compete in the Zinemira section of the San Sebastián Festival. The story encompasses five true stories based on written and oral testimonies, which take place between 1914 and 1982, in a village that does not exist. Produced by Gastibeltza Filmak, Adabaki Ekoizpenak, and Tentazioa Produkzioak, the work highlights the social changes experienced by a small village during the 20th century. The radiation and the end of a language, and the fight to survive.

‘Contadores’ is one of several Basque productions that will be on show at the 71st San Sebastian Film Festival. The short film directed by Irati Gorostidi had its world premiere at the Cannes Critics' Week and will compete in the Zabaltegi Tabakalera section of the Zinemaldia. Produced by Apellaniz & de Sosa, as well as Tractora and Pirenaika, the film is about a trade union negotiation in the 1970s and features a cast made up of amateur actors.

'A Deep Breath’ is the work that will be presented by directors Bertha Gaztelumendi and Rosa Zufía at the Basque Cinema Gala. In the documentary, both directors dive into the films made by female Basque filmmakers of different generations. The film is to be screened today, 26 September, at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre and will compete for the Irizar Basque Film Award. As a sign of the understanding between the two, the directors have agreed to take part in a joint question-and-answer session.

'Mission to Mars' will be screened out of competition in the Zinemira section. Amat Vallmajor del Pozo's film participated in WIP Europe, was also screened at the Berlin Critics' Week and earned a mention at the Gijón Film Festival. The feature film, produced by Elias Querejeta Zine Eskola, Muxika Zinema and Vitrine Films, portrays a post-apocalyptic Basque Country, where two brothers set off on a mission. We spoke to the director about his participation in the San Sebastian Festival and the challenges he has set himself ahead of the film's theatrical release on 29 September.

After winning the FIPRESCI Prize in Tallinn (Estonia) and the Best Film Award at the Kolkata Film Festival (India), 'Upon Entry', the debut feature film by Alejandro Rojas and Juan Sebastián Vásquez, will feature in the Made in Spain section of the San Sebastian Festival. Carlos Juarez, from Basque Films (one of the producers of the film together with Zabriskie Films and Sygnatia), assesses the background behind this film.

CIMASUB comes to BILBAO as part of the Basque Environment and Ocean Week 2023

The competition for the 47th edition of the San Sebastian International Underwater Film Festival, CIMASUB 2023, is now underway. The deadline for submitting entries to the competition is officially open, with a deadline of 20 September 2023. The Donostia Music Documentary Film Festival, Dock of the Bay, which will take place from the 1st to the 6th of May, 2023, has presented this morning at a press conference the films in competition. In the words of Eva Rivera, director of the Festival "in this sixteenth edition, we will continue to bet on quality and independent cinema. Offering unprecedented programming and promoting dialogue between creators and spectators. We are committed to inclusion and diversity, to open spaces for reflection and to bring us closer to the world. In addition, we will strive to be a festival respectful of our environment, that promotes slow culture and that you can feel close to. A festival where the human is present and people are the measure of all acts". In this sixteenth edition, 25 documentaries will be screened.

The Cannes Critics' Week has selected the work 'Contadores', by Irati Gorostidi, for the Official Short Films Section. It is a project of the producers Apellaniz and De Sosa, Tractora and Pirenaika, and which has formed part of the catalog Kimuak 2022, which is currently managed by Zineuskadi.

‘Europe’ and ‘To Bird Or Not To Bird’, featured at Animayo 2024! The festival, taking place from May 8th to 11th in Gran Canaria, has selected the two Basque productions to participate in the International Film Selection. ➖ ‘Europe’, by Ekain Irigoien, is produced by Mirokutana, Sonora Estudios, Bira Produkzioak, and Gastibeltza Filmak. ➖ ‘To Bird Or Not To Bird’, by Martín Romero, is produced by Uniko and Abano Producións.
