THE ‘HALLOWEEN’ HOUSE: Get Stalked by Michael Myers in South Pasadena

1000 mission st. s. pasadena, ca. 91030.

Remember the Myers house from the classic slasher flick Halloween ? That iconic, suburban, baby blue casa of horror that gets splashed across our TV screens each October? Well, find comfort in knowing that it’s still in existence, and looks exactly the same as it did 30+ years ago. In fact, it’s now preserved as a California Historical Landmark! Isn’t that odd?

Located right off the train in South Pasadena– an area famous for their tree lined blocks and grassy knolls– the neighborhood basically screams Midwest. In fact, many other Hollywood flicks that needed the old "Fall" look were shot here, including Top Gun and Pretty in Pink , to name a few.

While the house is now a massage therapist’s office, you can sit on the stairs (they’re cool with it), admire the toilet blue coloring of the house, and, (presumably) still murder your sister in the upstairs bedroom. Some things change, others stay the same, and that’s ok with me.

Other locations from the flick, such as the hardware store, main city strip, and cemetery, are also within walking distance. The whole experience of coming to this region of LA is truly a Halloween fans dream come true, with the humble looking Myers house serving as the main attraction.

Bonus Points: Right around the corner you can visit the Stroud house, and pose for pictures with fake pumpkins just like Jamie Lee Curtis did in the movie.

They actual encourage it! And will supply you with fake pumpkins to pose with.

There's still some decency left in this world!

The original location of the house was 707 Meridian Avenue, right down the block from the current address, during the filming of Halloween . Due to the extremely low budget allocated to the film, director John Carpenter actually shot the exteriors and interiors at the house, making it one helluva a movie location gem for fans.

It was during a morning stroll where David saw that the house was about to be demolished. As a fan, he decided to take action and would strike a deal with the home’s owner (allegedly on the exact day the house was to be demolished) to purchase it for $1, with the promise to keep the house intact and move it somewhere else.

Despite not owning any land to put his newly acquired home on, Margrave made good on his promise and moved it to some nearby property across from the railroad tracks. What he lacked in permission to move it to the new location, he made up for with his heroic save, and the fair city of South Pasadena recognized the house's importance as a California Landmark.

You Can Actually Visit The Real Myers House From Halloween

The property is still standing today - although there's been one big change..

Jess Hardiman

Attention movie fans! You can actually visit Michael Myers ' home f rom Halloween - and it turns out the building has quite the story to tell beyond its past life as a movie set.

Anyone who's seen John Carpenter's 1978 slasher flick will remember the chaos that killer Michael Myers brought to his sleepy, suburban former neighbourhood .

After murdering his sister in their home as she babys its him on Halloween night, a six-year-old Myers is committed to a sanitarium, but breaks out 15 years and returns to his hometown. Here, he stalks the new generation of babysitters - his vacant old house remaining as an eerie reminder of the town's grisly past , as history gets set to repeat itself.

Carpenter shot the film with a low budget, meaning he had to cut a few corners to bring Haddonfield, Illinois, to life. W ardrobe and props were made from everyday items - including Myers' famous mask, which was a re-purposed rubber mask of Captain Kirk from Star Trek - while real-life houses, schools and neighbourhoods were used as sets.

This includes the old Myers home, a two- storey Victorian property with a porch and wooden-clad exterior - a property that is still standing today.

michael myers house tour pasadena

However, the house doesn't sit where it once did, as it's actually changed locations since the movie was filmed , having had to be moved to avoid demolition.

According to MyersHouseNC.com - the website for a life-size replica of the house over in North Carolina - as a result of the relocation, the small addition to the back of the house for filming had to be removed, but otherwise the house appears 'exactly as it did in the classic 1978 film'.

While the home could previously be f o und at 709 Meridan Avenue in South Pasadena, California, in 1987 it was picked up and relocated to nearby 1000 Mission Street , where it remains today.

michael myers house tour pasadena

In fact, you can even find it on Google Maps and Google Earth, with a description on the latter's collection of 'Scary Movie Locations' reading: " Micheal Myers' name comes to mind for many around the 31st of October, ever since the 1978 film, "Halloween" hit cinemas. It's here in the Myers' family home that Jamie Lee Curtis meets a bloody end in her debut acting, playing Michael's older sister.

"The house has been moved in recent years, and now stands near a railway line."

michael myers house tour pasadena

You can't go inside, as the property is now home to the offices of several businesses, but fans are allowed to rock up and take photos of the exterior - with a note often found on the door reading: "Movie fans. Please do not disturb the tenants. Please stay off the porch and keep to the perimeter (or driveway) of the house for pictures."

Next door, there's also the SugarMynt Gallery , an attraction that pays homage to the Halloween franchise.

michael myers house tour pasadena

Billing itself as a 'spooky art gallery located behind the Michael Myers house' , the venue also puts on regular events and movie screenings.

MyersHouseNC.com also explains that fans can check out another landmark from the film in the 'immediate area'

The site says: "W hen the house was moved from its original location, it was relocated directly across the street from Nichol's Hardware store, where Laurie and Anne (Nancy Loomis) were rocking the BOC and smoking pot in the classic film. "

Then there's the famous hedge that Myers stands by as Laurie and Annie approach, which can be found at 1019 Montrose Avenue, also in South Pasadena.

Every town has a haunted house… That's exactly what the filmmakers found when searching for locations for John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN ...a simple old dilapidated Victorian house standing in stark contrast to the tidy suburban homes of South Pasadena, California.  When they found it, the house appeared exactly as it does in the scene where little Tommy Doyle (Brian Andrews) and Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) take a different route to school to put the key underneath the mat of the old Spookhouse.  A little known fact is that the crew had to fix up the house and whitewash the entire front and bottom right-hand side to capture the opening sequence of the film when little Mikey Myers (Will Sandin) murders his older sister Judith (Sandy Johnson) in the upstairs bedroom.

Unlike many of today's horror flicks, John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN was filmed in an actual house rather than on a movie set.  This simple fact adds another layer of authenticity to the movie for its legion of dedicated fans - the fact that, somewhere, Michael Myers' house really exists.

michael myers house tour pasadena

That somewhere is 1000 Mission Street in South Pasadena, California.  Luckily for HALLOWEEN fans, South Pasadena identified the historical significance of "The Century House" and has named it landmark #34 in their list of local properties, forever preserving it as a piece of history.  Aside from its significance as a famous film location, South Pas recognized the house, built in 1888, as possibly being the city’s oldest surviving frame residence.  Historians consider the house to be the city's first duplex, marking the arrival of settlers from Indiana and their Midwestern influence on local architecture.  The house itself blends several architectural styles, showing Midwestern Greek revival and salt box characteristics, as well as Eastlake elements such as the gable ornaments.

Without intervention, the house would have been destroyed as it was set to be bulldozed in 1987 to make way for a hospital.  Fortunately, it was salvaged and moved from its original location at 709 Meridian Avenue to its current residence on Mission St.  Owner David Margrave saved the house from imminent destruction on a whim.  Dave recalled that there were six houses side by side on Meridian Avenue, and during the course of about a 3-week period there were houses removed each day one at a time.  The Century House was the last standing in that area.  When he went by the demolition site and saw the house about to be demolished, Dave impulsively asked the bulldozer driver to stop just as he was giving the walls of the rickety old house the first push.  After saving the house from immediate danger, he went to owner Dr. Joseph Kohn's office and offered him a silver dollar for the home.  Dr. Kohn accepted the deal along with Dave's promise to move the house within one week.  Unfortunately, he had no property on which to put the house, so in a brash move one night he paid movers to transport the old structure onto some nearby railroad property.  Even though Dave did not have permission to relocate the house to this area, the house remains there to this day because the city of South Pasadena recognized the building’s historical significance and allowed it to stay. As a result of the relocation, the small addition to the back of the house for the filming of HALLOWEEN had to be removed, but other than that, the house appears today exactly as it did in the classic 1978 film.  Of course, today it is no longer a private residence - several local businesses have offices set up in various rooms of the house.  Along with interior modifications to convert the rooms into office space, the exterior of the house was given a facelift and painted light blue with red trim.

michael myers house tour pasadena

Fans wanting to visit the original house will have no problem seeing the famous landmark from the outside - all you have to do is get off of the train at "Mission Station" and you are a stone's throw away from the original Spookhouse.  Exploring the interior of Michael's old haunts proves a bit more difficult, as the businesses inside the house are not crazy about HALLOWEEN fans randomly dropping by to pay homage.  Although, visiting fans can also catch a glimpse of another Halloween landmark in the immediate area.  When the house was moved from its original location, it was relocated directly across the street from Nichol's Hardware store, where Laurie and Anne (Nancy Loomis) were rocking the BOC and smoking pot in the classic film.  Although the now famous Myers House is not quite your typical tourist destination, it is frequently visited by dedicated fans from all over the world.  For many fans, simply knowing that the house still exists can give them the chills. Who knows, maybe Michael is still lurking behind one of those gaping windows...

Hello Michael! This is where it all began. His childhood memories consist of play dates and hide and seek games. This house is popular every Halloween. I'm glad I was able to mark it down on my to do list. See you on Halloween 2024.

I absolutely love Michael Meyers I think it's so neat you can go see the Meyers house. It's in a beautiful area of Pasadena You can take pictures but remember to be respectful it is a business building now.

I am not a fan of horror films but there is something special about the entire Michael Myers Halloween series. It is something that will get you in a festive October mood to do spooky stuff but it's not really something that will keep you awake at night. I was driving around Pasadena and I never realized that the house was here. I believe it was at another location and moved here at a later date. It's a little awkward to get to because it is very, very close to train tracks but it's well worth checking out. I saw it during the day, but I imagine it's quite a sight at night. There is a gallery next door that is dedicated to Michael Myers and it's pretty fun to tour as well. It's $20 per person so bring your wallet.

This is the Original Michael Myers house from the movie Halloween. This is located in South Pasadena. It's so cool to visit this house anytime. But especially cooler during Halloween. You will see some "Michael Myers" there standing on the porch. Some will let you take pictures with them. During Halloween time or closer to Halloween day it does get crowded. So going earlier in October or on a weekday you can get a crowd free picture l. This picture is from this year's Halloween. Also what's cool is on Halloween the surrounding streets so Trick or Treating. They have blocks with decked out houses.

Just happened to stumble upon the Michael Meyer's Halloween house in South Pasadena. Was having dinner near by and noticed it as I was walking from my car. I had previously heard that in was in the area but didn't realize that it was right there. Lots of free parking in the neighborhood area. Not sure if you can enter into the house, but it was cool to see and snap a few pics and selfies. Lol I wouldn't drive all the way out just to see the house unless you're a super fan, but if you're in the area it's free and easy to stop by and take a look. A few nice eateries around the area, so go have a meal and then stop by and take a selfie.

I don't know why but I thought the original house of Michael Myers from the original "Halloween" movie directed by John Carpenter is harder to find in Pasadena. I was wrong, it was so easy to find, on Mission off, right nearthe Gold Line. You can see the house (blue) while riding the subway. So next time you're in it, look for it! Just a tip! The house is right in the heart of South Pasadena and it's a historic house, built in 1888 and protected by the city (really nice). It's a small duplex, built in the Victorian style. Initially the house was located at Meridian Ave (near by) when they shoot the movie, but movef to its current location by the owner to avoid demolition! It was repainted for the movie, but it looks similar and you feel suddenly transported in the world of the oiriginal Halloween, the Halloween in my opinion. There were other fans while we were taking photos who also came to check out the famous location and photograph it. Since it's a private property, everyone was respectful. So, if you are a horror fun and love hunting the city for famous movie locations, this is easy to find! Still charming and a tad spooky! Feel like you stepped righ in the movie!

michael myers house tour pasadena

Kind of confusing to get to with Apple Maps but worth it! Apple Maps got me to the neighborhood and then had to use the walking setting to cut across train tracks and down an ally. No one bothered me taking photos so if you are respectful it's doesn't seem to be an issue.

Do you enjoy horror movies too? Well this is definitely a classic and easy to find. Drive by or park on a side street to get a view of this iconic Michael Myers filmed home that we have all grown up with. Simple and free! No crowd which was a plus!

You Can Actually Visit The House From Halloween

Jamie Lee Curtis holding knife in Halloween

When John Carpenter's " Halloween " debuted in 1978, it changed horror movies forever. The story of straight-laced teenager Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) being forced to take on escaped serial killer Michael Myers (Nick Castle and Tony Moran) on the spookiest night of the year popularized the slasher genre in a whole new way. It even sparked plenty of tropes within the sub-genre itself, such as the inclusion of eerie synth scores and having a masked murderer be a movie's ultimate big bad. The success of "Halloween" has led to several remakes and sequels, most recently the upcoming 2021 horror film " Halloween Kills ." But none of them can ultimately hold a candle to the lasting cultural influence of the original, a true spine-tingling classic.

Unsurprisingly, a story as wild as "Halloween" isn't actually based on real-life horrors, but the creators' desire to make a scary movie as culturally impactful as "The Exorcist." Even so, you can actually visit one of the movie's iconic locations in real life.

Michael Myers' house is still standing in California

One of the most memorable parts of "Halloween" is its terrifying opening scene, in which a 6-year-old Michael Myers (Will Sandin) stabs his older sister Judith (Sandy Johnson) to death with the family's kitchen knife on Halloween night in the franchise's central town of Haddonfield, Illinois. When Michael's parents come home and pull a clown mask off his face, it foreshadows the masked killer he will continue to be in adulthood. Fifteen years later, Michael's fate becomes intertwined with Laurie's when she visits the house, which her father is trying to sell, and he begins stalking her.

Believe it or not, the Myers family house is real and still exists today. However, it's changed locations since the movie was filmed. For years, the house could be found at 709 Meridian Avenue in South Pasadena, California (via Los Angeles Magazine ). To escape demolition in 1987, it was moved to 1000 Mission Street in the same town, and later designated a historical landmark, per California Curiosities .

So, the next time you watch "Halloween," remember that house is actually out there — but probably not to truly haunt your dreams.

NBC Los Angeles

It's October in Haddonfield, also known as South Pasadena, the home of ‘Halloween'

Sugarmynt gallery, which is located behind the michael myers house, is celebrating the famous horror film with an exhibit, live music, and walking tours., by alysia gray painter • published october 25, 2023 • updated on october 25, 2023 at 10:21 am, what to know.

  • Much of "Halloween," the 1978 classic horror film directed by John Carpenter, was filmed around South Pasadena
  • SugarMynt Gallery, which is located behind the famous Michael Myers house, is helming several "Halloween"-inspired events as October 2023 concludes

Famous film locations are found on practically every corner of Los Angeles, or so it may seem, but many of these places have changed over the decades. The shop or park you loved in a vintage flick often has a distinctly different look or vibe, making it semi-unrecognizable when compared with what you first saw in the cinema.

This is not the case with "Halloween," the iconic 1978 horror film that brought Michael Myers, one of the genre's terrifying titans, to mask-wearing, jumpsuit-rocking, head-tilting life.

Set in the town of Haddonfield, Illinois, director John Carpenter and his tenacious independent-minded crew made convincing use of a Southern California town, even breaking out the fall leaves, strewn from bags, to give the sidewalks that autumnal Midwest appearance.

It is, of course, South Pasadena we speak of, and while the babysitting houses seen in the latter half of the film are located in Hollywood, you can find the majority of the other "Halloween" locations, from heroine Laurie Strode's house to the infamous hardware store, around the charming West San Gabriel Valley city.

More than four decades have passed, but fans will find that the South Pasadena sites depicted in the film remain close to how they looked in 1978, save some fresh paint, new landscaping, or, in the case of the Michael Myers house, a move down the block.

South Pasadena has also starred in movie hits like "Terminator" and "Back to the Future," but fans will totally return to the city, year after year, to find the streets walked by Laurie and her friends.

The gallery's "Welcome to Haddonfield" art exhibit is on view, and there are Halloween Walking Tours, too, that may be booked through the gallery.

"Halloween 2" is showing in the gallery's backyard on Oct. 27 and 28, but, before then, the Jazz Cartel will play some celebrated songs from the "Halloween" soundtrack on Oct. 26.

Ticket prices and times for all of the "Halloween" events are available on the SugarMynt site.

Merry Not Scary: Original ‘Halloween’ House Appears on the Market in SoCal for $1.8M

Let’s go back, way back—say, to the late 1970s when Jamie Lee Curtis was an ingenue and the dastardly Michael Myers character was terrorizing his neighbors in director John Carpenter ‘s first “Halloween” film.

The home of Curtis’ character, Laurie Strode, was featured prominently in the horror classic, and the residence still stands—it’s now a three-unit, multifamily home in South Pasadena, CA .

The iconic digs can be yours for $1,799,000.

(Realtor.com)

‘Halloween’ house

Fans of the frightening franchise will probably recognize the exterior of the movie-famous house.

The property was a filming location for the 1978 slasher flick. And if you watch it (we dare you), you’ll recognize the infamous stoop where Curtis sat, holding a pumpkin.

But here’s the thing. In real life, the house is not even remotely scary . In fact, it’s a familiar staple in the cozy, well-established Los Angeles suburb.

The 1906 Craftsman is a cherished abode that has been in the same family for three generations. They’ve had it since the 1940s, and the property even includes still has a thriving avocado tree the family planted way back then.

The quaint interiors don’t look like they’ve changed much over the years, so the buyer might want to update the space a bit.

Still, the place has been extremely well maintained, and some of the original features— tile, woodwork, built-ins, solid doors, and wood floors—can easily be preserved.

michael myers house tour pasadena

Renovation-ready

Because the home is vacant, renovation work will likely be easier than it might otherwise. It’s not often you come across a multifamily property that’s completely uninhabited and primed for a refresh.

The home is in a prominent neighborhood with towering trees. It’s a few blocks from a new development called Fairview Court, a multiuse property with new housing, shops, and restaurants. It’s being built on the site of a former school, and its one-time auditorium will find new life as a live music venue.

Once that project is completed, the value of the house and its rental units could very well increase. So, any renovation efforts on the home would be worthwhile.

michael myers house tour pasadena

One building, three units

Each of the three apartments in the house has its own identity. The apartment that dominates the main floor is a spacious one-bedroom, one-bath unit with a living room, dining room, kitchen, pantry, utility room, and basement. It has access to a certain gracious, river rock-fronted, covered porch: Yup, Laurie Strode’s oh, so memorable perch in the seminal film.

michael myers house tour pasadena

The second unit has three bedrooms, and the third apartment is a one-bedroom unit. These rentals have private side entrances and share a back patio.

michael myers house tour pasadena

That’s not all, though

The garage could easily be converted into an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), to add a fourth unit to the property. And there’d still be two off-street parking spaces in the driveway.

Each apartment enjoys plenty of natural light from the home’s many windows.

michael myers house tour pasadena

All together, the property has 2,640 square feet, four bedrooms, and three baths. The property is ripe for conversion back to a single-family dwelling—an endeavor that could pay off, since the home is situated in one of the Los Angeles area’s best school districts.

There isn't as much filming going on in Los Angeles right now due to the ongoing actors' strike and only recently resolved writers' strike. But for decades, cities east of downtown L.A. — including Pasadena, South Pasadena and Altadena — have been a big draw for film and TV productions.

Veteran location scout and manager Rick Schuler says the "denas," with their wide variety of single-family homes and tree-lined streets, are most often used as stand-ins for the Midwest or East Coast.

Schuler recently took the How To LA team on a tour of some filming locations, used in movies like Halloween , Back to the Future and Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

The city of South Pasadena, Schuler says, is often a go-to destination when a film crew wants a location that has the feel of a small, Midwestern town.

And interestingly, the city does have a historical connection with the Midwest — the Anglo founders of South Pasadena and Pasadena, back in the 1870s, were from Indiana .

Probably the most well-known filming location in South Pasadena is the “Michael Myers” house at 1000 Mission St., which was featured in the 1978 horror classic Halloween . In the film, and subsequent sequels, it’s the home of the killer, Michael Myers.

A view of the outside front of a two-story Victorian style blue house with white and red trim and a brown roof, flanked by tall trees. A brick path leads to the front porch with a sign out front that reads “1000 Century House.”

The Victorian-style home, built in 1888, is one of several South Pasadena houses featured in the film and is meant to be the fictional town of Haddonfield, Illinois.

“But they chose South Pasadena,” Schuler says, because “South Pasadena is like an everywhere American city, basically from the Midwest or the East Coast. And what makes it that are the tree-lined streets, the type of architecture that's here. And it feels like a small town.”

Schuler says there’s also a good number of brick buildings in South Pasadena, which you don’t see too much of in L.A., and lots of big camphor trees that form canopies over streets.

A view of the front of the South Pasadena Public Library on a sunny day. There is a green lawn out front, several different types of trees, including some palm trees on the right. Two light posts flank the cement and brick walkway to the arched front entrance.

The only tree that’s a problem? Palm trees — a dead giveaway that you’re in L.A.

“Palm trees can be the bane of our existence,” Schuler says. Or at least, they used to be. “In the age now of CGI and all that kind of stuff, they can quickly now say, ‘Oh, we can remove that.’”

There are other workarounds too that don’t involve computers. For example, near the Pasadena home that Schuler found for the 2005 movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith , which was set on the East Coast, the film crew disguised the tree trunks of some palm trees that line the street.

“We wrapped them with two semi-cylinder, oak-looking or camphor-tree-looking shells,” Schuler says. “And so we did like 10 feet of that” because only the tree trunks could be seen in the frame.

Being from the Midwest himself though, Schuler says South Pasadena and Pasadena aren’t exact matches for the region.

“I think we've created kind of a movie version of the Midwest with a white picket fence, dormers [on the house] and wood shingles. And that kind of thing does exist there, but there's all kinds of other styles there too.”

Another big challenge to filming in residential neighborhoods, Schuler says, is getting the support of a homeowner to use a specific house.

The first step is knocking on the door, then explaining why you’re there, but also not giving them too much information too quickly.

“What we would have to do is talk to the people [about] whether they want to do it,” Schuler says, “and then eventually [explain that] yes, we need to move you out into a hotel, we want to take all your stuff out and put it in storage, we want to bring our stuff in…”

And depending on what city you’re in and what time of day or night you want to film, productions also need to get sign off from a certain number of neighbors.

A front view of a white, two-story Colonial-style home with black shutters on either side of all the windows. A cement walkway cuts the lawn in half. There is an American flag and pumpkins decorating the porch. Separating the lawn and sidewalk is a large hedge. A lamppost is on the right and two large trees partially obscure the house.

In the case of the Colonial-style Mr. & Mrs. Smith house on San Pascual Avenue in Pasadena, which was only used for outdoor shots, the owners also agreed to let the film crew drive a car up onto their lawn, build a temporary garage in the backyard, and even set off a small explosion.

Robbie Leslie, whose parents own the home, and who was 7 years old at the time of filming, remembers it as a great time.

“We were put up in the Ritz Carlton a couple miles away and I remember putting it to good use,” Leslie says. “I would always go down to the bar after school and ask for a bowl of cereal, which they would always provide. And it was fun.”

“Now it's kind of like every icebreaker thing that I ever need. I can be like, ‘Oh, have you ever seen Mr. & Mrs. Smith ? That's our house … [and] no, it didn’t really get blown up.’”

Another draw for film location scouts are the variety of homes in the “denas.”

Just down the street from the main Mr. & Mrs. Smith house is a Tudor-style house that was also used for a short scene.

A view of an all-brick home with a green lawn out front. The roof is sharply angled, like a triangle, with a smaller triangle in front, forming the main entrance. There is a chimney on the left side of home, with shrubs and flowers out front and a medium-sized tree to the right. Two alarm company signs are in front of the flower bids on either side of the home.

And it’s just a short drive across the city to the iconic Craftsman Back to the Future home (or Gamble House) which is a popular tourist destination with architecture buffs and film-lovers alike. It was designed by the renowned architectural firm Greene and Greene.

A view of the Gamble House in Pasadena, from the brick walkway. The grass outside the home is greenish brown and the house itself is covered in brown shingles, two stories tall, with an open-air patio on the top floor. The beams of the roof are visible as they extend out beyond the structure of the home itself. A chimney is visible in the center of the roof and the cement-looking short front wall is partially covered by an ivy-like climbing plant. About four small, bright green spikey palms or succulents sit in planters on the short wall.

Though, in the case of the Gamble House, Schuler says it now may be too well known now to use in other films. “Not so much because it’s the Gamble House, but more because it was in Back to the Future .”

And even though having a house become somewhat “off limits” isn’t a great thing for location scouts like him, Schuler says: “in some sense that's good, because we showcase certain things that people sort of get interested in preserving.”

For SaraRose Orlandini, the original “Halloween” isn’t just a movie — it’s a way of life.

“I’m extremely passionate about ‘Halloween,’” says the 32-year-old resident of South Pasadena, the picturesque San Gabriel Valley suburb where John Carpenter filmed much of his 1978 horror classic. So passionate, in fact, that she’s made it her business. In 2015, the energetic aficionado opened SugarMynt Gallery, an art gallery and event space dedicated to the hugely influential slasher film. “This is for the fans,” she says of the venture. “This is for people like me.”

Ben Brown, 10, of Sedona, Ariz., is dressed as the villain, Michael Myers from the 1978 horror classic "Halloween" while visiting the "Myers house," background, on Meridian Avenue in South Pasadena, where much of the movie was filmed.

The shop could hardly be better located. Next door, the 130-year-old clapboard house used as masked killer Michael Myers’ childhood home in the movie casts a literal shadow over Orlandini’s business. This brings SugarMynt a steady stream of “Halloween” tourists, some of whom come long distances to step into the cinematic Middle American hamlet known in the film as Haddonfield, Ill.

“We were looking for Middle America,” “Halloween” cinematographer Dean Cundey recalled of the decision to shoot in South Pasadena. “Haddonfield … was supposed to be just average America. And South Pasadena’s architectural style is very similar… you know, the clapboard houses and the tree-lined streets and so forth.”

SaraRose Orlandini is ready for the holiday at her SugarMynt Gallery, which is devoted to the horror classic "Halloween" in South Pasadena.

SugarMynt is only the most conspicuous manifestation of the town’s legacy as the main setting of Carpenter’s movie, a low-budget production so rich in atmosphere that viewing it becomes an immersive experience. This quality perhaps explains why fans have made this town of 25,000 a sort of mecca. In 2007, no less a superfan than Rob Zombie even filmed portions of his remake there (the latest installment, which opens Friday, was largely filmed in South Carolina).

“The locations are all still there,” says Justin Beahm, a fan who parlayed his admiration of the picture into a job with “Halloween” distributor Trancas International Films (he has since left the company). “A lot of filming locations over time change or are taken down or whatever else, or they’re on a soundstage. Well, there is a Haddonfield, and it is South Pasadena.”

Daniel Patton, left, of San Francisco, and friend Mat Dedoussis of New Jersey visit the "Myers house" in South Pasadena.

Interestingly, the Myers house (which has since been designated a South Pasadena Historic Landmark) was saved due to its significance as one of the town’s earliest homes — not because of its connection to the movie. In 1988, when the house was in danger of being bulldozed to make way for a condominium complex, then-City Councilman David Margrave swooped in and bought it for the bargain price of a silver dollar, under the condition that he move it off the lot by the end of the week.

“The South Pasadena Preservation Foundation had a big block party, and they moved the house… from one side of the street to the other, where it sits now,” recalls Margrave’s widow, Diane Hamilton-Margrave , who still co-owns the building.

In the years since, the house (now used as an office building) has been painted a pale blue with pinkish trim, giving it a decidedly cheerier appearance than it had in the film. But to “Halloween” fans, it will always be the Myers house; even Carpenter recognizes its importance as a symbol of his most famous creation. “He came and he presented David with a map of [Haddonfield],” says Hamilton-Margrave. “They were very appreciative.”

Ben Brown, 10, of Sedona, Ariz., dresses up as "Halloween" villain Michael Myers while visiting the SugarMynt gallery in South Pasadena.

Less than a quarter-mile away, another valuable piece of “Halloween” real estate also draws fans: The home of Jamie Lee Curtis’ mousy-but-resilient Laurie Strode. To the delight of passersby, the home’s owner — who spoke with The Times but requested not to be named because of privacy concerns — has fully embraced the association, even leaving plastic pumpkins out on the front porch along with a sign inviting fans to pose “like Jamie Lee Curtis.”

“It was one of those things where my husband and I said, ‘Why fight it? Just get with it,’” says the homeowner, who notes that people have come from such far-flung locales as Germany, Japan and New Zealand to see the house. Bad apples do occasionally rear their heads, however. “I’ve had the pumpkins stolen. I’ve had some other stuff stolen off my porch,” she said. “But it’s rare.”

“For whatever reason, ‘Halloween’ has by far the most rabid fans [of any horror franchise],” noted Sean Clark, a writer, director, producer, host and personal appearance agent who with Trancas Films and HorrorHound magazine has spearheaded “Halloween” conventions in neighboring Pasadena every five years since 2003, including this year’s 40th anniversary celebration. “To the point of being annoying. I mean, I love them, but at the same time, they are the Trekkies of the horror world… and I couldn’t tell you why. It’s a mystery to me.”

Danny Foster of Atascadero strikes a pose next to a mannequin in the likeness of "Halloween" villain Michael Myers.

Clark isn’t kidding. A quick YouTube search turns up an enormous number of filming location videos shot by fans who made the trek, including at least one “Halloween”-themed marriage proposal. That video was shot by Alec Wells, who proposed to his superfan then-girlfriend Kat Canipe (now Wells) while dressed as Michael Myers; the clip eventually garnered the attention of fans and now boasts more than 330,000 views.

“It feels like church,” Kat Wells said of visiting the South Pasadena locations, including the famous peek-a-boo hedge on Montrose Avenue and the hardware store where Michael steals his mask (now an Indian restaurant called Radhika). “To people who aren’t horror fans, to say something like, ‘You know, a horror movie means so much to me that I go to the location and it makes me want to cry,’ that sounds insane. But … it was absolutely transcendent. It just felt like I was in Haddonfield.”

The town hasn’t fully embraced its cinematic notoriety, however. Although Beahm and town librarian Steve Fjeldsted eventually persuaded the City Council to name Oct. 31 “John Carpenter Day” — South Pasadena held a 2013 public proclamation ceremony attended by Carpenter— he recalls experiencing some pushback initially.

Jordan Hafford of Salt Lake City kisses a mannequin of villain Michael Myers that is part of a re-created scene from the 1978 movie "Halloween."

“I really don’t think that they at the time knew the extent of the horror fan base and their dedication to this film,” says Beahm. “So we kind of had to convince them of that.”

As far as Orlandini is concerned, South Pasadena should do more to exploit the “Halloween” connection. “I never understood why people in this city have never embraced it,” she said — her next-door neighbors included. “There’s an insurance guy upstairs… and I try to tell him, ‘Cater to “Halloween” fans.’ Everybody needs insurance. Why not get it at the Myers house?”

The Halloween Movie House From 1978: Then And Now

Fans of the horror movie franchise ‘ Halloween ‘ should instantly recognize the Halloween movie house. In recent years, it has had a change in appearance and, believe it or not, a change in location (we will go into more detail on that later). However, it still looks recognizable almost fifty years on, as you’ll see later in the article.

Mike Myers House

The Halloween movie house was the house where Michael Myers lived with his family in the original Halloween movie (1978). It’s also where he began his killing spree, starting with his sister in the family bathroom…

The History Of The Halloween Movie House

The Michael Myers house, or ‘Halloween movie house’ as it is often known, was originally built in 1888. The property was located at 709 Meridian Avenue in South Pasadena, California. However, the house was later moved…

When John Carpenter was looking for filming locations for the Halloween movie house, he came across the property at 709 Meridian Avenue, which was already abandoned and left rotting. While they wanted the house to look spooky, it couldn’t look abandoned, as this was supposed to be the Myers family home, so the production team got to work.

Halloween Movie Poster

They began fixing up the inside and outside of the property, as both the interior and exterior were to be used in the movie. This included floorboards, lighting, and all the typical stuff a fixer-upper would require. Then they whitewashed the exterior, rather than paint it in fresh white paint, to make it look like it still needed a coat of paint.

The Michael Myers House In The Movie

Anyone who has seen the original Halloween movie will know that Michael Myers killed his first victim at this house. Stabbing to death his sister Judith in the bathroom on Halloween night when he was just six years old.

Halloween Movie House

After the incident, Michael was sent away to Smith’s Grove Sanitarium, where he remained for 15 years before escaping and returning to his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois. While the movie was set in Haddonfield, Illinois, it wasn’t filmed there. All filming took place in locations around Los Angeles.

The Halloween House After The Movie

After filming at the property ended in 1978, the house at 709 Meridian Avenue was abandoned again. It was then set to be demolished in 1987, along with many other nearby properties. However, it was saved by a South Pasadena council member, David Margrave, who purchased the property for next to nothing.

As part of his deal when buying the house, it had to be immediately removed so redevelopment of the area could take place. David had the house moved from 709 Meridian Avenue to where it is now, 1000 Mission Street, just 160 yards down the road. The property now sits next to a railway track opposite some commercial buildings.

In the years since the house was moved to Mission Street, the property has been transformed into an office building known as ‘Century House.’ It houses offices for four different companies, and while you can’t just walk in and have a look, apparently, the office workers are happy for fans to come and sit on the steps and take photos.

One of the commercial buildings that the house now sits opposite is an Indian restaurant. However, in 1978, at the time of filming Halloween , it was a hardware store. This was the same store where Michael Myers found his mask in the movie.

Below is a photo of the staircase as it looked in the movie and how it looks today, over four decades later.

Other Houses From The Halloween Movie

Those who have watched the original Halloween movie will know that the Michael Myers house is not the only Halloween movie house worth mentioning.

Laurie Strode’s house, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, also gets a fair bit of screen time. Her house is also located in South Pasadena, at 1115 Oxley Street. Unlike the Michael Myers house, this property has not moved and still looks much like it did in the movie, despite its color change.

Laurie Strode House

The Doyle house, where Laurie ends up in a grueling battle with Micahel Myers at the end of the movie, was built in 1920. It is located on Orange Grove Avenue in Hollywood.

Much like the Strode house, it still looks very recognizable today. Some would even argue this is the true Halloween movie house, as it is where the finale occurs.

Here's Where You Can Visit The House From Halloween

Michael Myers home from Halloween

If you are a fan of the horror movie genre, you might know that there are few film franchises that can withstand the test of time. Brain-eating classics like George A. Romero's groundbreaking 1968 zombie film, "Night of the Living Dead," spawned a whole series of movies, including "Dawn of the Dead," Day of the Dead," and "Land of the Dead." These films spun into countless remakes and paved the way for the smash-hit television franchise, "The Walking Dead."

If roaming corpses aren't your idea of entertainment and you tend to lean toward the macabre slasher series, then there is no better start than John Carpenter's 1978 masterpiece, "Halloween." The film centers around the unstoppable, blank-stare masked killer, Michael Myers, who is kept locked up in a mental institution after slaying his sister when he was just a child, according to IMDb . After escaping the confines of the institution, Myers goes on a murderous rampage in his old hometown of Haddonfield where he terrorizes the locals.

While revisiting his childhood home, Myers meets the new inhabitants, including Laurie Strode — played by a then 19-year-old Jamie Lee Curtis — who resists the hulking killer as she fights for her life, enveloping the premier idea of what it is to be the final girl . Mega-fans of the slasher franchise — that to date comprises 12 films, including the most recent installment, 2021's "Halloween Kills" — can relive the experience of the original film and actually stalk the home of Michael Myers.

The former home of Michael Myers is a historical site

If you were to look up where to find Haddonfield, Illinois, so that you could possibly get a glimpse of the cinematic killer's old slaying grounds, you would be left scratching your head. Haddonfield is a made-up Illinois suburb; the actual gray-white paneled siding rustic home is located in South Pasadena, California. When filming the slasher-horror classic, director John Carpenter had to make every cent of his meager $325,000 budget count, according to Entertainment Weekly . Although the film was a hit and went on to make $47 million in domestic sales, there wasn't much in the budget for fancy sets, and many of the scenes were actually filmed within the home itself.

Originally located at 709 Meridian Avenue, the Midwestern Greek-style two-story home that was built in 1888 was set to be demolished in order to make way for new construction, according to Myers House North Carolina . However, the home was saved by a local city council member named David Margrave, who purchased it from the original owner for a silver dollar and had it relocated to its current spot at 1000 Mission Street. Now that the site has gained South Pasadena Historic Landmark status, it can be visited for decades to come, according to the Los Angeles Times . And although the home has since been painted a pale blue and now inhabits office space as opposed to a knife-wielding maniac, fans of the film can still check it out.

In 1886, entrepreneur William E. McConnell began building a two-story house, sunken garden, small carriage house, and barn for his family on an entire block in the Fort Russell neighborhood. Like other early Fort Russell residents, McConnell sited the house on the block’s most prominent corner, the intersection of Second and Adams streets, to showcase its eyecatching design and position his family at the center of Moscow’s social life.

The house reflects an eclectic blend of Victorian-era architectural styles including Eastlake, Italianate, and Gothic Revival. Rather than engage an architect, McConnell likely used plans from a pattern book and worked with a carpenter to integrate elements and detailing from the three styles. The resulting cohesive design made a unique statement in the fledgling city.

On the exterior, characteristically vertical proportions are expressed in several ways. Three two-story bays capped with slender gable roofs define its signature massing; windows and doors on each facade are correspondingly tall and narrow. As viewed from intersecting sidewalks and streets, verticality is further amplified by the site itself, which slopes steeply upward toward the house. Exterior ornamentation is extensive: decorative brackets support window bays and roof overhangs, and gable ends feature highly articulated wood ornamentation. Although the original clapboard siding has been replaced with metal siding, gable ends continue to display cedar shingles with sawtooth imbrication.

Both the spatial organization and interior detailing reflect a combination of Victorian-era influences. The original ground-floor plan featured front and rear parlors separated by wood sliding doors, a dining room, kitchen, pantry, and servant’s quarters. Four bedrooms and children’s playrooms were housed on the second floor. High ceiling heights prevail throughout the house. Windows feature interior wooden shutters (made in San Francisco) that serve to further accent vertical proportions in each room.

Consistent with the later Victorian era, appearance rather than quality weighed heavily McConnell’s decisions regarding finishes. Interior detailing was largely crafted from Moscow’s limited pallet of available materials. Locally prevalent fir and pine were used for interior millwork and flooring; the inexpensive wood was then painted with graining to create the appearance of more costly hardwoods. Similarly, the steel-backed fireplace in the back parlor was embellished with a thin veneer of Vermont marble bordered by gold leaf and black onyx trim.

The family fell into financial hard times following McConnell’s two-term governorship and the financial panic of 1893, during which he was forced to declare bankruptcy and close his downtown department store. To avoid losing the property, McConnell’s wife declared it an official homestead. The bank took ownership of the house in 1897 and it remained vacant until 1901, when it was purchased by William Adair, one of the community’s first physicians. Since the house was larger than his family required, Adair rented rooms to local entrepreneurs and university faculty. Frederic Church, a European history professor who, at one time, rented a room in the house, later purchased the building as his own single-family residence. The barn was sold and converted to a single-family residence in 1926. Church bequeathed the house to the Latah County Historical Society upon his death in 1966.

Since 1968 the house has served as both headquarters and museum for the Latah County Historical Society (LCHS). It provides one of the best remaining examples of Italianate and Eastlake architecture in the state of Idaho. Though compromised by some unfortunate decisions surrounding its ongoing maintenance, such as use of metal replacement siding, the McConnell House continues to communicate a significant architectural presence while serving in its adapted role as a museum.
