Everest Base Camp Trekking

The Everest Base Camp trek with Sherpa Expedition was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that exceeded all expectations. Our Sherpa guide and porter were not just knowledgeable and professional, but also warm and friendly, making the journey feel like a true adventure with friends. The trek to Everest Base Camp offered unparalleled views of the world's highest peaks, along with stunning landscapes that left me in awe at every turn. The guidance and support provided by our Sherpa guide were invaluable, ensuring our safety and comfort throughout the trek. The professionalism and expertise of the Sherpa Expedition team were evident in every aspect of the journey, from the well-planned itinerary to the top-notch accommodations and logistics. The team's dedication to making sure we had an unforgettable experience was truly commendable. I cannot recommend the Everest Base Camp trek with Sherpa Expedition highly enough. It was a well-organized, seamless adventure that allowed me to immerse myself in the beauty of the Himalayas while feeling supported and cared for every step of the way. 7 Day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour Tour

7 Day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour

This was our family’s first guided trip, and we chose the camping option (ages 52, 50, 13, 12). It exceeded our expectations! Despite a complex itinerary we never once had to think about how to get there, how much time to spend at each place, where to park, what to see, where to stay, where or what to eat - that was all planned for us. There was no marital or family tension and could just truly sit back and enjoy the ride! I truly believe we did more and saw more than we ever would have on our own. And special experiences like moonrises and sunrises were a big bonus. Our guide John was an enthusiastic and capable outdoorsman. He made sure the trip met the needs of the various guests - campers and hotellers alike, with a wide range of ages and physical abilities. There were thoughtful touches like road-trip playlists, moonrise and sunrise viewings, pit stops at roadside stops to support Native American craftsmen, and more. This is a beautiful part of the US - each park more beautiful than the last, but each one unique and wonderful. Highly recommend!

7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Tour Tour

7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Tour

This was a very well organised 7 day trip to see all the canyons and our guide Adriann was fantastic at accommodating to all our needs. We were a small group of 8 ranging from solo travellers to families such as ourselves and got along very well throughout the 7 days. Although I was not able to see the arches for personal reasons, our guide Adriann was very understanding and made sure the rest of our trip was still amazing. I particularly found Bryce Canyon and Antelope Canyon the most exciting places to visit and the Grand Canyon for my mother which had been number one on her bucket list places to visit. I would definitely recommend this tour and would be keen to go on it again or even on other excursions that they offer!

If you are looking to visit Perú, you can see Inkayni Tours like an excellent option for you, the food prepared by Herminio is delicious, after feel a little tired by walking so much he was waiting for us with delightful dishes. I was surprised because the food was not the same, and every day was different. The company of Ruben was great, he was our guide and when he started to explain each place he made it with passion talking about his ancestral legacy. I am happy because I met my goal to meet Machu Picchu and Inkayni Peru improves this experience in Perú, definitely, I will recommend Inkayni to my friends.

Mountain Hikes & Trip Reviews

I am happy to provide a detailed review of your Everest Base Camp trek with Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Pvt Ltd, guided by Mind Sherpa. First and foremost, I must say that the experience of trekking to Everest Base Camp is truly unparalleled. The majestic beauty of the Himalayas, the challenging terrain, and the rich Sherpa culture all combine to make it a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Mind Sherpa, our guide from Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Pvt Ltd, played a crucial role in ensuring that our trek was safe, enjoyable, and memorable. Mind's expertise and knowledge of the region were evident throughout the journey. He was not only well-versed in the trails and the best routes to take, but he also shared fascinating insights about the local flora, fauna, and Sherpa traditions. Mind Sherpa's dedication to providing top-notch service was commendable. From arranging accommodations and meals to ensuring our safety and well-being at high altitudes, Mind went above and beyond to make sure that our trek was smooth and hassle-free. His professionalism and attention to detail were truly impressive. Moreover, Mind Sherpa's friendly and approachable demeanor made our trek even more enjoyable. He was always ready to answer our questions, offer guidance, and share stories about the mountains and the Sherpa way of life. His positive attitude and sense of humor were contagious, and we felt like we were trekking with a friend rather than just a guide. Overall, our experience with Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Pvt Ltd, guided by Mind Sherpa, was nothing short of exceptional. The combination of stunning landscapes, expert guidance, and outstanding service made this trek a truly unforgettable adventure. I highly recommend Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Pvt Ltd for anyone looking to explore the Everest region, and I am grateful to Mind Sherpa for his professionalism, expertise, and warm hospitality throughout the journey.
I recently had the incredible opportunity to embark on a 12-day Everest Base Camp Trek with Sherpa Expedition, and it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that exceeded all my expectations. From the moment I contacted them to inquire about the trek to the moment I said goodbye to my guide and porter at the end of the journey, Sherpa Expedition provided exceptional service and support every step of the way. The team at Sherpa Expedition was professional, knowledgeable, and passionate about ensuring that my trek was not only safe but also enjoyable. Our guide was experienced and had an in-depth understanding of the local culture, history, and geography of the region, which added so much depth to the trek. He was also very attentive to our needs, constantly checking in on our well-being and making sure we were acclimatizing properly to the high altitudes. The itinerary for the trek was well-planned and allowed us to acclimatize gradually as we made our way to Everest Base Camp. Each day brought new breathtaking views of the Himalayas, and the sense of accomplishment upon reaching Base Camp was truly indescribable. The accommodations and meals provided during the trek were comfortable and delicious, giving us the energy we needed to continue our journey each day.
The best trekking company in Nepal! I spent a month in Nepal and did two separate treks with Alpine Ramble – the 11 day Annapurna Circuit and 8 day Everest Base Camp. I did a fair amount of research on trekking companies before booking and Alpine Ramble more than deserves the reputation it has in review sections like these! First up, you have Dil who is the mastermind behind it all. He was really easy to contact via WhatsApp before I arrived. He was able to plan a trip for me that allowed me to see both Annapurna and Everest regions, with enough time for acclimatisation, rest and unforeseen delays. Speaking of which, my flight to Lukla was delayed one day due to weather, which is very common. But this is when Dil went above and beyond. He organised a helicopter to take me the next day, at no additional charge. For context, the other people on the heli had to pay upwards of $300 each. Now I’m sure Dil wouldn’t be able to do this for every customer, but it just shows how committed he is to making sure you have the best time. And I’m so thankful, it was only one of the best experiences of my life! Now onto the guides and porters. I had Basanta and Prakash for ACT, and Krishna Dhakar and Balkumar for EBC. They were all fantastic. Whether it was playing ludo/cards together or them cheerleading me through some of the more challenging sections of the trek, I will be forever grateful to these guys for making my experience so special. They were all such wonderful people. They set a nice slow hiking pace and checked my oxygen levels every night to reduce the risk of altitude sickness, but also recognised when I could go a bit further. They took care of everything, so I could just focus on enjoying the trekking! We stayed in great tea houses throughout, and I’d always seem to get the best room on offer. Maybe that’s Dil working his magic! Last thing. You read and hear a lot about poor working conditions and exploitation in Nepal. It was really important to me that this wasn’t the case for my trip and I can confirm that Alpine Ramble treats all its staff fairly. From limits on how heavy the porters’ bags can be, to the 10% that goes to charity, Alpine Ramble seems very ethical. I was delighted to hear that one of my guide’s (very smart) sons was studying Computer Science in the US. It gave me confidence that my money was being fairly distributed. Thank you so much to everyone at Alpine Ramble, I’ll be back one day!

Welcome to nepal.

Nepal itself is a small country with the huge collections of natural beauties lying on South of Asia. Our Nepal is widely renowned as the birthplace of Gautam Buddha “Light of Asia”. The east-west stretched mountains of our country have held the prestige high not only of Nepalese people but it’s the proud of the whole world. Many swift flowing rivers, streams, lakes, glaciers, waterfalls, green hills, dense forests, etc. are the great attractions of tourists for rafting, bungee jumping, hiking, trekking, jungle safari, mountain climbing, rock climbing, sightseeing, research of natural and cultural phenomena , etc.

Nepal located between great countries China and India has amazing biological diversities, isolating geography, ethnic groups and caste groups numbered more than 60 and about 100 languages which have indicated a complex pattern of cultures, customs and religious beliefs make hard to generalize the Nepalese people. Our traditional cultures, customs, religions, languages, etc. reflects the great historical importance of our country and obviously as an independent country full of peace and love. Besides from all these, Nepal is paradise on earth which is said by our lovely foreigners who love Nepalese and Nepal. Of course, they are really true, our geographical diversities, languages, religions, customs, rituals, cultures, have proven their saying. The east-west extended ranges of Nepal like Mahabharat range, Chure range consist of many valleys, hills, mountains, which provide you the best experience for safe trekking, hiking. According to your budget, fitness level, and available time you can enjoy the trekking of different long and short routes. The swift flowing rivers of Nepal like Marsyangdi, Trishuli, Bhotekoshi, Karnali, Kali Gandaki, Sun Koshi, Tamur are the suitable rivers for the rafting. So Nepal provides you lot of fun by rafting.

Among many beautiful places of Nepal, Pokhara is the most touristic area. The people, who have been there, give the name of small Switzerland to Pokhara. Behind the wide popularities of Pokhara, there are lots of hidden specialities which have contributed the most in the industry of tourism of Nepal. Lakes: Phewa lake, Begnas lake, Rupa lake, Mahendra cave, Bats cave, old monasteries, temples, sunrise and sunset views catches the attraction of every visitors at the first sight. Sarangkot is only the place of Nepal from where you can paraglide to overview the scenes of Pokhara valley.

Bhotekoshi is only the place where the travelers enjoy bungee jumping. If you want it then you have to go Bhotekoshi.

The historically important places of Nepal like Kathmandu Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Pashupatinath temple, Bouddanath, Swoyambhunath (Monkey temple), Chitwan national park are enlisted in the world heritage site.

Walking vs hiking vs trekking.

Outline of a running shoe with a red strip on the side

Our walking trips will take you on defined tracks and over smooth surfaces – think the grasslands of northern Thailand, rice paddies in Mai Chau, and New Zealand's idyllic Queen Charlotte Track. There’s no need for fitness preparation or specialized equipment; just you, your comfortable walking shoes, and a healthy sense of adventure. And we promise there’s not a base camp in sight.

Outline of a hiking shoe with red patch at the top

Make your way up magnificent mountains, through concentrated bushland, and across rugged, countryside trails on our range of leader-led hiking trips. Harder and longer than a walk but less physically demanding than a trek, hikes are the perfect in-between for those who still want to thoroughly explore the great outdoors without all the fuss of proper equipment.

An outline of a person carrying a backpack

Treks are often in remote destinations where the trails are barely visible, and the terrain makes it harder to traverse without specialized equipment. These treks range from tackling Kilimanjaro to testing your limits at Everest Base Camp and generally feature high altitudes and overnight stops with basic accommodation. Yep, say goodbye to showers and hello to unforgettable memories.

What is the range of walking & trekking holidays available?

Our walking & trekking tours span the gamut of active adventures from relatively easy, leisurely walks to multi-day challenges in high mountains. We offer a range of tours in the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro and the Americas, as well as plenty of classic hikes in Europe, the UK, and Australia.

What are the types of walking & hiking holidays?

We predominantly provide two styles of walking & trekking holidays:

Centre-based – this style of holiday spends all (or majority) of time in the centre of the action. Think Chamonix in the French Alps, Dobbiaco in the Dolomites or a rustic hotel in Yosemite Valley. Enjoy the comfort of the same room every day (as well as only unpacking once), and a selection of the best restaurants and other attractions in the neighbourhood. All you have to do is sit back and relax as we pick the best combination of walks available either directly from the foot of your accommodation, or just a short transfer away (often a public bus or train). To put it bluntly – you'll be fairly comfortable while experiencing the best walks and hikes going 'round.

Point-to-point – this style of holiday makes you walk from one place to the other, pretty much every day. However, we do throw in a rest day every now and then, depending on the region and the amount of hiking we need to cover on a daily basis. On point-to-point tours, you'll start in A and finish in B. Think about the Inca Trail, the Mount Everest Base Camp trek, the Hadrian’s Wall hike or the Mont Blanc Circuit. In most cases, we'll transfer your main luggage across to the next destination, so all you need to carry is the essentials (water, sun protection, waterproofs, extra layers, snacks and a camera).

How safe are walking & trekking holidays?

The safety of our clients (you), staff (us), and all the people around us (our local friends and other trekkers) is our highest priority. This means we don't cut corners. Ever. All our leaders are adequately qualified, experienced, and insured so you don't need to worry about a thing. We only hike on well-settled trails and we follow local rules. Always. If the local authorities tell us it’s not advisable to walk certain trails then we won’t. If the weather is not looking good, we'll change our plans. If the trail is too busy, we'll turn around and hike elsewhere. It's as simple as that. We're all about staying safe, enjoying the best trails possible, and being flexible to achieve the best hiking experience for you.

What is included in walking & trekking trips?

We include accommodation as per the itinerary, as well as transportation to and from trailheads and to all other included activities (note: this transportation is often public as that's the way we like to travel). We also include ALL hiking permits, whether it is in the Himalayas or the US National Parks. On top of that, we provide our highly qualified and experienced leaders to guide you throughout the trip.

What level of comfort can I expect on a walking & trekking holiday?

Most of our walking & trekking holidays are in the Intrepid Original standard, staying in small, authentic, and atmospheric 2–3-star hotels, using public transport where possible, and including all breakfasts, as well as some dinners and lunches depending on the travel destination. However, some of the trips are in the Intrepid Basix style – in most cases, these are trips featuring more remote itineraries such as in the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro, or Morocco. We then stay in either local guesthouses (or so-called teahouses in the Himalayas), or we camp. We often use private transfers on these trips too, as public transport options may not be available. Camping can be quite comfortable with spacious tents, clean water available, and where possible, a toilet tent set up. But we also want to make the experience as authentic as possible so you can always opt to camp under the stars.

How sustainable are walking & hiking trips?

Sustainability is at the centre of everything we do, and walking & trekking holidays are no different. In fact, spending most of the time on your feet, scaling local trailheads is probably as sustainable as it gets. We also try to use public transport as much as possible and contract only small, family-run hotels and guesthouses. We also align our itineraries with local standards and follow all rules set up by local authorities. The hikes we choose are mostly a combination of the iconic trails (aka ones you don't want to miss) and the lesser-known ones, ensuring there's a little bit of everything.

What to pack for walking & hiking trip?

All itineraries feature a packing list on the 'Essential Trip Information' document. Please read it carefully as it may contain trip-specific items you must bring. On a higher level, you always need to pack a backpack/day bag to accompany you on your daily walks, comfortable walking shoes or boots (depending on the trip), good trekking clothing (combination of lightweight and quick drying shorts, pants, short and long sleeve shirts), extra warm layers (sometimes even a down jacket) and waterproof gear. We also highly recommend bringing walking poles as these are very useful on steep ascents and long descents.

Read more about what to pack your walking & trekking trip

Will I be required to carry my own luggage?

The short answer is no. Your main luggage is transported for you on point-to-point itineraries (often by porters, therefore it should be packed in a soft/duffle bag) and your luggage stays in your accommodation for all centre-based itineraries. However, you'll need to bring a small bag/backpack (around 25-30 litre capacity) to carry around all of your essentials (water, snacks, extra layer, waterproofs) when you're on the move.

Do I need any special insurance?

You will need to have insurance that will cover hiking and trekking in certain destinations up to a certain elevation (in the Himalayas, Peru, and a few other destinations that feature altitude hikes). But you won't need any special insurance to cover technical activities. However, to be 100% certain your cover is adequate for the trip you're doing, we suggest you talk to an insurer and present the planned itinerary of your chosen trip.

How big are the group sizes?

The maximum group size is 12 people on the majority of walking & trekking trips, however, some itineraries may go up to 16 people. But, on average, there are 7-10 people on each departure.

Are walking & hiking holidays suitable for solo travellers?

Absolutely! In fact, most of our customers are travelling solo, and there is no extra fee for doing so. One thing to note is that if are travelling solo, you'll be room-sharing with another solo traveller of the same sex. If you would prefer to have your own room, please speak to your booking agent as we're often able to accommodate this at an extra fee.

What ages are the group holidays suitable for?

The minimum age on our walking & trekking holidays is predominantly 15 (on some itineraries we can accept a lower age – sometimes even 12, so please enquire at the time of booking). But there is no maximum age limit. We’ll accept everyone who’s keen and physically ready for the challenge (no screening form needed – we trust your own judgement), regardless of age. After all, age is really only a state of mind, right?

Will I get altitude sickness?

On some of our hikes you will encounter high altitudes. When climbing above 2,800 metres (9,200 feet), it is common for travellers to experience some adverse health effects due to the altitude, regardless of your age, gender and fitness. It even happened to Sir Edmund Hillary!

There’s no real way to tell how your body will react to the rigours of altitude trekking, so it is important that you monitor your condition and discuss any prevailing symptoms with your guide. If you have any pre-existing conditions that could be exacerbated by high altitudes, be sure to get them checked out by a doctor before you leave.

But above all, try not to worry, most of our travellers shake off the effects of altitude pretty quickly and enjoy a safe and rewarding trek.

How fit do I need to be to go on a walking & trekking trip?

We have walks ranging from relatively easy to rather challenging. But no matter what degree of difficulty or distance you choose to walk, we recommend that you have a reasonable level of fitness to ensure that you get the most out of your walk or hike. Try to commit to some type of physical training program around six weeks before you depart. Here are some suggestions: Long walks: go on some long walks of 3-6 hours duration before you leave, wearing the boots you’re taking and carrying a small backpack to get comfortable with carrying your gear for long stretches. Aerobic exercise: running, distance cycling and the various aerobic classes offered at gyms (like pump, spin, zumba and circuit classes) all help to give you fitness and stamina. Strength training: doing body weight training like pushups, squats, dips, lunges, etc. helps to build up your muscle strength, which is needed for the steady climb up a mountain if you’re embarking on this type of hike (bootcamp sessions are perfect for this type of training).

The best mountain journeys in the world

The best mountain journeys in the world

By KE Adventure Travel

This is it – our ultimate list of the  best mountain journeys in the world . We’ve been to the tops of some of the world’s highest peaks, trekked through the most remote valleys and scouted far and wide to create these adventures, so we can say with certainty that they’re the pinnacle of mountain adventure. Explore the world across these adventures and take your pick...

KANG YATSE 2 AND THE LHATO VALLEY – INDIA

New to our range but no less spectacular, Kang Yatse is the 6000m summit to climb for 2020. Offering another view to the Himalaya, India’s mountains have a character of their own, something you’ll come to see as you head toward this excellent first 6000m mountain. If you like the sound of remote, this is the journey for you, trekking through the almost unknown Lhato Valley to acclimatise in the week before the summit. With a technically straightforward ascent, this two-week holiday is the perfect combination for those wanting to hone their mountaineering skills whilst enjoying cultural immersion and true wilderness trekking. What makes it: so far, this trekking peak is much less visited than a lot of its Himalayan cousins. Get there before the crowds do.

THE LAYA TREK – BHUTAN

mountain journey tours and treks

In Bhutan, the journey is as much about this tiny country’s fascinating culture as it is about the mountains – which are spectacular, by the way. Passing beneath the mighty peaks of Shinge La, Chomolhari and Jitchu Drake, the aim of this challenging trek (another famed as one of the world’s finest), is to reach the Laya village, Bhutan’s highest settlement, which lies on the border with Tibet. Here you’ll meet its friendly inhabitants, and maybe even attend the Royal Highlander Festival, if you time your departure right. With your Bhutan visa fees, all meals, and return flights from Kathmandu to Paro included, along with a free sleeping bag and down jacket hire, all you will have to focus on is one unforgettable journey. What makes it:  as modern life advances, few and fewer places remain inaccessible by vehicle. Enjoy the special feeling of having reached the timeless village of Laya on foot.

K2 AND CONCORDIA

mountain journey tours and treks

Moving along the Himalayan chain, Pakistan’s Karakoram presents a wild personality of their own. Anyone who’s been will tell you: these mountains are like no others on Earth. Kicking off the adventure in Baltistan, where you can be assured of a warm welcome from our partner (the same one we’ve been connected with for over 35 years), you’ll then head into the heart of the Karakoram and from there begin trekking, aiming to reach the foot of the second highest mountain on earth, K2. As your route takes you over the Baltoro Glacier and up and past the granite faces of the Trango Towers, you’ll start to realise why the Karakoram has captured the hearts and minds of so many of the world’s greatest adventurers. Has to be seen to be believed.

What makes it:  Nowhere else on earth can you stand so close to so many of the world’s highest peaks; as well as K2, you’ll be gazing up at Broad Peak (8047m) and Gasherbrum (8080m).

THE ULTIMATE FANN MOUNTAINS TREK – TAJIKISTAN

mountain journey tours and treks

Central Asia is one of the last great frontiers of adventure travel, and this trek helps you step into it. The beautiful Pamirs are home to the little-visited Fann Mountains, a stunning range home to snow-capped 5000m peaks, rocky valleys and an abundance of aqua-marine lakes. 12 days here offer a comprehensive tour, featuring high viewpoints, dramatic passes and memorable encounters with Tajik shepherds. What makes it: the campsites are situated next to pristine lakes and babbling, crystal-clear brooks. Take a dip, or simply relax and enjoy the view. It’ll feel like a slice of mountain paradise.

CHOQUEQUIRAO TO MACHU PICCHU - PERU

mountain journey tours and treks

Anyone who loves the mountains needs to explore the Andes and see Machu Picchu at least once in their lifetime. This is the way to do it a little differently. Trek a longer, more challenging route than the Inca Trail to reach Machu Picchu, with the added reward of seeing the incredible lost fortress of Choquequirao too. Your journey will include trekking along canyons, exploring the rugged Cordillera Vilcabamba, and standing in awe of snowy 6000m peaks, including Salkantay. One epic route with two jaw-dropping Incan sites to explore. What makes it:  The fortress itself. More remote and challenging to access than Machu Picchu, Choquequirao is far less visited and still offers you the chance to explore Incan ruins in relative solitude.

THE ULTIMATE EVEREST TREK – NEPAL

mountain journey tours and treks

Taking the Everest experience one step further, this circuit is renowned as one of the world’s finest treks. You’ll divert from the main route by heading to the summit of Gokyo Ri, a simple ascent with a jaw-droppingly awesome view of blue lakes and sprawling mountains below, before taking on a bit more of a challenge and heading up to the heights of 5420m across the Cho La pass. This journey in itself would be enough, but of course, Everest Basecamp itself is the main goal, and not much comes close to satisfaction of reaching this iconic point. What makes it the best:  reaching basecamp and knowing you’ve gone the extra mile(s) to get there.

TRAVERSE OF THE CORDILLERA REAL – BOLIVIA

Experience the Andes at their snowy best in Bolivia’s Cordillera Real. This traverse is a high-altitude challenge but more than worth it. Our itinerary will get you acclimatised with a few days at Lake Titicaca, before heading into the depths of the mountains. Over two weeks the traverse will keep you on high trails, crossing several passes that reach a height of over 5000m. Expect alpine valleys, Quechua villages and idyllic lakes – along with of course, a few fluffy friends in the shape of ubiquitous llamas. What makes it: this adventure excels in its sheer variety. From the surreal experience of acclimatising on the shores of Lake Titicaca to encountering local communities in stunning mountain scenery, there are plenty of things which make this traverse unique.

THE ULTIMATE TOUR DU MONT BLANC – FRANCE, ITALY, SWITZERLAND

mountain journey tours and treks

The Tour du Mont Blanc is already iconic, but this adventure elevates the classic – literally – by taking high-level routes where possible to complete the circuit around Mont Blanc. The benefits of this are numerous: quieter trails, spectacular views and the joy of hut-to-hut trekking. More than worth the extra challenge, this is the best way to experience the French, Italian and Swiss Alps in one. What makes it: staying in some of the Alps' most spectacularly situated mountain huts. Perched next to a glacier, with alpine peaks sprawling before you and a beer in hand – that’s the way to finish a day of hard trekking.

THE COMPLETE GR20 – CORSICA

mountain journey tours and treks

You wouldn’t think that Europe’s toughest trek lies in the Mediterranean, but here it is: the GR20, a spiny traverse of rugged Corsica. Over 2 weeks you’ll trek 180km of mountainous terrain, 12000m of scent and descent and encounter series of scrambling manoeuvres to top it all off. Dramatic coastline, mountain villages and a landscape that only can be seen by those prepared to take this challenge head-on make it all worth it. What makes it:  the sense of achievement you’ll feel at the finish. Completing the GR20 is no mean feat – relish knowing you’ve conquered it.

TOUR DE MONTE ROSA – SWITZERLAND

mountain journey tours and treks

One of the finest long-distance trekking opportunities in Alpine Europe, and for some reason, no one knows about it. This tour circuits the massif of Monte Rosa, dipping into Italy along the way. This is alpine trekking at its finest, with stunning views of famous peaks such as Weisshorn and Matterhorn, and plenty of variety, walking over airy passes and even glaciers. Trekking hut-to-hut with a bit more in your backpack than usual adds an extra challenge, but this simply creates an even better sense of mountain immersion. What makes it:  the quiet trails. This route is tougher than the Tour du Mont Blanc and less well-known, making it the perfect tour for those who fancy an Alpine adventure but want to get away from the busier areas.

The Snowman Trek in Bhutan is considered one of the most challenging mountain treks in the world due to its high altitude, remote location, and rugged terrain. It covers a total of 11 mountain passes, which are over 5,000 meters (16,400 ft) in elevation, making the trek physically demanding and requiring a high level of fitness and preparation. This is on my hiking bucket list, and I’m really hoping to do it next year.

Despite the difficulties, the trek is also considered one of the most rewarding and spectacular, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayas and unique cultural experiences like the chance to visit ancient monasteries, visit the remote villages of Laya and Thanza, and experience the hospitality of the Bhutanese people, who not only measure their GDP, also measure happiness. It’s considered the happiest country in the world.

You’ll get fantastic views of Gangkar Punsum, the world’s highest unclimbed peak, from a distance.

It remains unclimbed because it is considered sacred by the Bhutanese people. And climbing it is against Bhutanese law and cultural beliefs. In 1994, Bhutan prohibited all mountaineering above an altitude of 6,000 meters (19,685 ft) in order to preserve the spiritual and environmental integrity of these sacred peaks. This also includes Gangkar Puensum, making it the highest unclimbed mountain in the world.

With each step, you’ll be struck by the beauty of the landscape and the isolation of this remote corner of the world. I’ve had the pleasure of hiking in Kyrgyzstan and the Tien Shan Mountains (sometimes called the little brother of the Himalayas), and I LOVED it. It’s so remote and incredibly beautiful. And if you time it right, you can combine it with a visit to the Nomad Games .

But what really sets the Aksu Traverse apart from other treks is the sense of adventure that comes with it.

This is not a well-trodden trail with established campsites and easy-to-follow paths. Instead, you’ll be forging your own way through the mountains, relying on your map and compass skills to keep you on track.

You’ll spend long days testing your endurance as you cross boulder fields and ford rivers and scramble up steep slopes.

At the end of each day, you’ll set up camp in some of the most serene and peaceful places on earth and fall asleep to the sound of silence. If you’re looking for a challenge and a true backcountry experience, you’ll love the Aksu Traverse Trek!

Salkantay trek vs the inca trail to macchu picchu.

Salkantay and Inca Trail going to Macchu Picchu in Peru

The main difference between the Salkantay Trek and the Inca Trail is the length, altitude terrain, and cultural significance of the routes. The Salkantay Trek offers a longer and more strenuous wilderness experience with fewer crowds.

Additionally, you’ll cross the Earland Falls, a cascading waterfall surrounded by towering cliffs, and the Clinton River, a rushing river that winds its way through the forest.

Overall, the Milford Track is an adventure that takes you through some of New Zealand’s most stunning raw and unspoilt landscapes. And although it’s one of New Zealand’s most popular walks, it feels remote and untouched, offering a true escape from civilization.

Best Mountain Treks in Africa

Kilimanjaro trek, tanzania.

Trek Highlight: Climbing the highest mountain in Africa

Kilimanjaro Trek in Tanzania is one of the best mountain treks in the world

  • Distance: varies depending on the route, but the most common route (Marangu) is approximately 60 km (37.28 miles)
  • # of Days: 5-9 (typical itinerary)
  • Starting Elevation: 1,830 m (6,000 ft)
  • Highest Elevation on Trek : 5,895 m (19,341 ft)

  • Accommodations : Hut-based trek (bookings are required) or camping
  • Best Time To Do This Trek: January to February and June to October

The Kilimanjaro Trek is a bucket-list adventure that takes you to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. With several trekking routes to choose from, although I recommend the Lemosho Route , since it’s the most scenic and varied in terms of a diverse range of landscapes, from lush tropical forests to barren alpine deserts.

During your trek, you’ll pass by landmarks such as the lush Shira Plateau, the beautiful Lava Tower, and the iconic Barranco Wall, a steep climb that requires a little bit of scrambling over rocks.

As you make your way to the summit, you’ll cross the challenging Arrow Glacier and pass by several majestic peaks, including the incredible summit crater of Kilimanjaro.

The highlight of the trek, of course, is reaching the summit of  Mount Kilimanjaro, where you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the savannas of Tanzania and the snow-capped peaks of Mount Meru. It’s definitely not for the faint of art though and you will likely experience altitude sickness as I did. However, it’s a trip of a lifetime and I’m so glad that I did it.

You may also encounter snakes. Several passed in front of me when I hiked to Cathedral Pass .

As you make your way along the circuit, you’ll cross rushing streams, climb steep grassy slopes, and traverse narrow passes, all while taking in the stunning beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains, a UNESCO site.

You’ll pass by landmarks like the Mnweni Needles, a series of towering rock formations, and the Cathedral Peak, a massive mountain that dominates the skyline.

The highlight of the Mnweni Circuit Hike is undoubtedly the breathtaking view of the Mnweni Valley, a vast and sprawling landscape that is simply awe-inspiring. You’ll stand at the edge of a sheer cliff and take in the panoramic views of the valley below, a seemingly endless expanse of rolling hills, soaring mountains, and dense forests.

Mountain Trekking Gear

While the specific gear you need for each trek may vary, check out my Trekking Gear List for a general idea of what you’ll need on almost any trek. Of special note are:

  • bringing an emergency thermal blanket . It may save your life.
  • Microspikes – if you’re hiking on ice or snow. They prevent you from falling.

Mountain Trekking Tips

Trekking with hiking poles

Check out my guide 7 Things That Will Wreck Your Trek . It’s a must-read before doing any trek. But of special note:

Choose a trek that’s suitable for your fitness and hiking experience

This might seem obvious, but owning a hiking company, I’m shocked at how many people want to do the Tour du Mont Blanc who say they’re in good shape but haven’t hiked before.

If you’ve never hiked before, then you’ll want to do at least a few day hikes first, but ideally, hike regularly. Setting yourself a hiking goal can help you do this. Plus, it’s motivating knowing that you’re training for your mountain trek.

And if you’re regularly doing day hikes, but it’s your first trek, start with a shorter trek. As you can see from above, there’s a wide range of treks you can do, starting from as little as two days.

Use trekking Poles

Even if you don’t normally hike with them, I highly recommend them for any trek. They take pressure off your joints, so you’re less likely to experience a knee issue and you won’t be as sore at the end of each day. You can see our list of recommended trekking poles .

Choose your Hiking Buddies Wisely

When you’re spending day and after day with the same people, it’s important to choose your hiking buddies carefully. Maybe that means going hiking with a friend. If you decide to do a group tour, ensure you spend the most time with the people that you vibe with the most and be polite, but don’t feel that you have to talk to everyone regularly. See my post on Travelling with a Group When You Don’t Fit in for more tips.

Guided vs Self-Guided Trekking Tours

This depends on the type of trek you’re doing. For some treks, like the Snowman Trek, you have to do guided. But for many, you have a choice. While I normally prefer self-guided hiking tours, when you’re doing a trek at a high elevation, like Everest Base Camp. I recommend going with a guide.

Also, if you’re doing a remote trek with little to no infrastructure, I also recommend going with a guide. Your safety is more important than your personal preferences.

More Trekking Tips

  • If you’re trekking in cold weather, make sure your water doesn’t freeze with these tips.
  • Ensure that you start your day off by having the right hiking breakfast .
  • Eat for fuel with these hiking snacks and lunches.
  • Wear Merino wool on your trek. I think it’s a miracle fabric.
  • Know what the signs of frostbite are – and how to prevent it.
  • Set a date by …  you want to do a specific trek.  Otherwise, you may never do it. You’ll find more tips on setting a hiking goal here.

How to Prevent Altitude Sickness on Your Mountain Trek

trekking in Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park

If you’re really worried about altitude sickness, the best way to avoid it is to choose a low-altitude trek.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention , altitude sickness most commonly occurs at elevations of 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) and higher. However, it can occur at slightly lower altitudes as well.

When I did the trek to Everest Base Camp, I experienced it at 3300m.

As you can see from the list of mountain treks, there are incredible treks that you can do that stay below the threshold.

While I’ll go into how to prevent altitude sickness in more detail in another post, the best way to prevent it and/or to reduce its severity of it is to hike very slowly to give your body time to acclimatize to the elevation.

You’ll also want to take regular breaks, giving your body even more time to acclimatize. When you’re not experiencing altitude sickness, it can seem like you’re hiking painfully slow, but by doing so, you can delay the onset of it.

On my Everest Base Camp Trek, ten of our twelve participants experienced it to varying degrees, but the ones that experienced it, later rather than sooner were grateful. I was really surprised that I experienced it at such a low elevation.

beginners-guide-for-trekking-in-the-himalayas

The majority of you who have searched for this topic are probably planning your first trek in the Himalayas. Otherwise, you may already have booked a trek and are trying to understand what an adventure tour would be like on the mountain.

Yes, you read that right—an adventure tour. Trekking in the Himalayas is indeed an adventure tour, and it will have its share of risk elements as well. But don’t worry; you have a certain amount of risk even when you cross a road or drive a car. Besides this, trekking is not a sport, at the same time does require certain physical strength and endurance, along with mental preparation.

Now let’s carefully go through the major planning parts and till you complete your journey along with our insights and pro tips . Remember that it is almost impossible to write an “ All in One or Complete Guide ” on this topic. In spite of the fact, we put in our due diligence so that we don’t miss any important points for you and even work as your one stop trekking guide. Don’t follow blindly whatever is written or implied, including our website! While most of these are facts, a few are opinions based on professional experience on this topic or a holistic view of mountains in general.

Also, this article is not about recommending the best treks for beginners in XYZ and so on, but rather equipping you with a meticulous understanding of the fundamentals of a trekking vacation in the Himalayas. On top of that, you get a broad understanding of how to choose a trek that suits you the best.

Plan well ahead of the execution:

Planning the right steps from the beginning would surely help you complete your first Himalayan journey, making it safe and memorable. It can be a life-changing experience quite easily for you. However, a trip at an altitude above 3000 m or 10000 ft will have uncertain natural or inclement weather conditions; altitude itself is a barrier, and adjusting to a different daily routine for most of you can be a potential challenge on a trek. Don’t take it too easy or casually, and be prepared. That can easily make life difficult on mountains. Simply think that mountains have their own natural rules, and we just need to abide by them. Rest can be a game changer in your life.

The Planning Phase: From now till you start your journey

Now we will discuss the points, which are essentially your preparation. It’s better to pay attention to details if you have made up your mind in favour of a Himalayan trek. When you get time, do go through the given links for more understanding. Note the headings so that you can do your own re(search) on the points mentioned here.

Choose the right season or time for your trek :

Any trekking route in the Himalayas will have its own specified season(s) that are supposedly the “best time to visit”. During this period, a particular route showcases most of the beauties and features it is known for. Additionally, you get a safer passage to complete your trek as well.

Each such suitable season for a particular trek will have different beauties and offerings, and you don’t get them all together. But trust us, each season will delight you with something or other.

Decide on the trekking grade :

All Himalayan treks are graded according to their difficulty level to complete. Consider starting with an Easy grade trek . You should try a route that will be well within your control as a whole; don’t test any extremes. Most likely first time you are going to a high altitude place and stay above ~ 3000 m/10000 ft.

People with previous hiking experiences in low altitudes who are living an active lifestyle or following a fitness schedule for the time being may consider a  Moderate level trek , going up to the highest altitude of ~ 4300 m – 14000 ft while camping or sleeping below 4000 m – 13000 ft of altitude.

Research the trekking route or the region :

Now these treks are located in different states or destinations across the Indian Himalayas . Try to see which ones suit you best, your preferred locations that match your vacation time, and any other preferences. All the destinations are indeed beautiful, but at times it’s a matter of convenience to choose a particular region.

Sometimes you may have heard about or been recommended a particular trek route. Before taking up your trek, research your chosen trekking route thoroughly. Get information on the trail conditions, weather patterns, altitude changes, and any cultural and natural landmarks along the way. This will help you prepare mentally and physically for the trek.

Pro tip : Consider choosing a trek from a shortlist that most matches with the above mentioned three points.

Talk with someone you know:

This is a quite natural thing that you would like to talk to someone you know who has been on treks, preferably in the Himalayas. Or maybe you just heard about trekking from a person, and now you are here as part of your research. First-hand information from people you know matters, as they should have taken many of these steps.

Otherwise, just get in touch with us so that we can talk. Often, it is easier to comprehend or understand when we talk.

Consider bookings through a reputed trekking tour operator/agency for trekking:

As a first-timer, it’s not normal that you can arrange a DIY (a.k.a. independent) trek in the Himalayas on your own. Well, maybe if you have highly experienced friends or family members to make a group. There are many logistical things the team would need to take care of to arrange an independent trekking tour.

Else, simply do your research and choose a professional organisation that takes care of the trekking logistics and helps you with many other things that you require. E.g., almost half of the points we discuss here are automatically taken care of by a reputed trekking company.

As a trekking tour operator, we offer Fixed Departure Treks that you may join as a solo member or with your group. Dates, costs, and services for these treks are fixed. Alternatively, if you already have your own group of people, you may opt for a Customised tour . Here dates, itinerary, level of service, and itinerary are tailor-made as suits your group. Cost depends on primarily the number of persons and level of service you prefer.

Pro tips : You pay for the professinal knowledge and on ground quality support. Do thorough research before choosing your trekking organisation. Consider getting a first-hand reference or recommendation from someone you know. There are many companies that are essentially travel portals or marketplaces, and Trek is one of the many available products and tickets they sell! It all depends on how the on-ground tour operator, who is responsible for managing and running the show, handles things! We suggest you avoid using a “booking agency”, unless highly trusted.

Keep a provision for an extra (buffer) day in your itinerary:

It may be pretty helpful to keep a buffer day or two in your travel itinerary. Keep this reserve day at the end of your trek. Either use it during an unforeseen event on the trek or later you just chill out a day after your trek.

Depending on a trek, sometimes it is convenient to reach the nearest railway station or airport on Day 0. Plan your travel itinerary accordingly.

Flexible flight tickets and reservations can be handy in dealing with such conditions.

Visit a doctor and consider getting a travel cum medical insurance for the trip:

It is always advisable that you visit a doctor well in advance before starting your trek. You must consult your doctor if you are already on medication or have an existing medical condition.

As already mentioned, trekking in the Himalayas involves certain risks, such as bad weather, accidents, and natural disasters. Consider getting comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, evacuation, and repatriation. Check with your trekking company to see if they can arrange one for you.

Arrange the necessary permits and documents :

Treks within the Himalayas are in remote locations and require permits from various governing bodies, including the concerned forest department or district administration offices, etc. If you book with a company, they will obtain the necessary permits.

Always carry the original identity card with your address on it. It can be your AADHAR, driving licence, voter ID, passport, or any other government ID card (a PAN card is not a valid ID card as it doesn’t have an address on it). Keep one or two photocopies of the original. In some treks, you need to bring your recent passport photo for permit procedures.

Additionally, you may have to submit a medical fitness certificate from a doctor for some treks where it is applicable. As it’s an adventure activity, usually companies will require an indemnity clause signed by you as well.

Get fit for the trek:

Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically demanding, so it’s essential to be in good physical shape. If you are already on a fitness schedule, you are surely at an advantage. Otherwise, plan to start a fitness programme well in advance, focusing on cardio and a few strength training exercises. Consult a physical trainer or your tour operator before undertaking any such programme. You can also do some practise hikes in your local area to build up your stamina.

Remember that you will enjoy the trail and surroundings more when you are reasonably fit for a given trek.

Here is a starter for the beginners:

Physical Fitness

Check the list of things to carry :

This is a very important aspect so you are safe and comfortable on the mountains.

  • Your 3-layers of clothing (a must on the mountains above ~3000 m/10000 ft):
  • Sleeping bag (generally, it is included in the package by your tour operator, like we do in our treks)
  • Your trekking shoes or boots
  • A rucksack or a backpack with a raincover

You may buy, borrow, or rent a few items. On many easy treks, you can reuse the already existing ones that you have for a different purpose. Consult our article on renting vs. buying trekking gear before deciding on a particular item.

Do carry a personal first aid and general medicine kit.

There are other small yet essential things to pack. Check out our detailed list of things to carry on a Himalayan trek below:

List of things to carry on a Himalayan trek

Pack smart and light:

The key to backpacking is to pack all the essentials while keeping your pack light. You don’t want to carry unnecessary items that are heavy on you. We recommend that you invest in buying good quality items so that they serve you safely on the mountain in the long run. At the same time, these items are lighter in weight and known for their wider range of use in different types of situations and conditions.

How you should pack your backpack for trekking?

Budget your expenses:

Now comes the budget. Estimate based on the following major expenses:

  • Your tour package cost (which usually takes care of your accommodation, meals, trekking guide and support staff, camping equipment and logistics, permits and levies charged by the governing authorities, etc.)
  • Travelling to basecamp and returning home
  • Any other accommodation and meals outside the trek but which may be required during your travel
  • Purchasing or renting trekking gear
  • Any other personal expenses or some buffer expenses

Pro tip : Keep adequate cash on hand for any on the spot expenses and as a buffer. Online transactions can be very difficult in remote areas due to limited network connectivity.

Don’t jump into a trek at the last moment:

As you can see, there is quite a bit of planning ahead for your trek, so just don’t register or book a trek at the last moment. As a beginner, take your time, plan well in advance, and then get things arranged. There is always a next time, no matter how tempting if you could manage to join at the 11th hour. I is very likely that if you are very late to decide, you may remain unprepared and put yourself and your team at risk.

Trek Execution Phase: Follow these when you are actually on the trek

This is an equally important phase and deals with the dos and don’ts on the ground. To adjust yourself on a mountain, you need to focus on two key areas. One area is altitude and how you are coping with it physically following certain rules. Another area is being that how do you interact with the environment as a whole by following certain norms, decorums, or etiquette, whatever you like to call it.

Stay hydrated and enjoy your meals:

It is vital to drink enough water and fluids throughout the day to remain hydrated. Fill your water bottle(s) at a campsite and ask your guide about a possible opportunity to refill while you walk. Drinking water is collected from a stream or from a natural source. Avoid drinking water from unknown sources.

Remember that due to the cool or cold weather, you may not feel like drinking adequate water. This may directly lead to a muscle cramp or create other health problems on the mountain.

Eat sufficient food, which gives you much needed energy and nutrition to continue your trek. Ideally, you should eat at least the same amount you eat back at home. A fractional reduction can be due to the new conditions; however, a moderate loss of appetite is an early indicator of mountain sickness.

Acclimatise properly :

High altitude means less pressure, or thin air, and less oxygen to breathe. Acclimatisation refers to the physiological changes that occur when you arrive at a high altitude and allow the body to function properly in the low oxygen environment. E.g., your ear pops on a plane, which is the adjustment your body does due to the pressure difference.

It is recommended that you sleep inside the tree line for three nights before reaching a higher altitude. Usually tree line ends between 3300 to 3600 m (11,000 and 12,000 ft) depending on a region or particular route. A well thought-out itinerary will consider these factors and help you in the acclimatisation process.

If your body doesn’t acclimatise, you may notice sustained symptoms, which include headache, nausea, shortness of breath, and dizziness. difficulty sleeping, and the inability to exercise or move. These are signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) , although they are uncommon below 4000 m – 13000 ft. When someone is affeted by AMS, it is a must to bring the person as quickly as possible.

Avoid alcohol and smoking which seriously harm you on the mountain.

Pro tip : Cool down once you reach your campsite for the day. Don’t get inside the tent and rest immediately, even if you are feeling unwell. Rather, put on warm clothes, walk around a bit, chit chat with your fellow trekkers, sip a cup of tea, and enjoy and adjust to the environment.

Inform any irregular or uncomfortable physical condition to your trek guide:

Always inform your trek guide or leader about any discomfort rather than keeping it a secret. This may help to identify any altitude conditions and act accordingly.

Follow the instructions of your trek guide or leader:

This is self explanatory. Be it how you walk or manoeuvre on the trail or maintaining certain rules. They are experienced in these conditions and well aware of the situation. After all, your guide and support team are responsible for your well being on the mountains.

Start early and finish early:

A regular day on the trail can be quite different from your daily routine back home. During a trek, you wake up early to witness the sunrise views, get refreshed, and have your breakfast. Pack everything and be ready to start at the latest by 7:00 – 7:30 am.

If you start early, most likely you will reach your day’s destination on time and have plenty of time to explore the campsite in the afternoon. Similarly, you finish your dinner and call it a day early so that you get enough sleep.

Set your pace:

It is important to find the pace that suits you. Don’t walk too fast or too slowly, as either of these will make you tired. Keep walking at a slow but steady pace. Take short breaks to enjoy nature or to catch your breath.

Follow mountain manners and etiquettes

Mother nature likes good manners. Be modest and humble in the mountains. A smile goes a long way. Your flexibility to cope with and adjust according to the conditions is certainly a great advantage.

Work as a team on mountain:

Just remember the age-old saying, United we stand, divided we fall. Gel well with your team mates. Your team’s bonding plays a role here as well.

Respect local customs and traditions:

The Himalayas are a culturally diverse region, and it is important to respect local customs and traditions. Dress modestly, remove your shoes before entering temples or monasteries, and ask permission before photographing people.

Care for the environment, leave no footprints:

The Himalayas are a fragile ecosystem, and it’s important to respect and take care of the environment while trekking. This is the only way we can do our part to preserve this magnificent gift of nature for our future generations.

Strictly avoid littering, stick to the designated trails, and do not disturb the local flora and fauna. Don’t leave any of your non-biodegradable waste on the mountain; carry these items back and recycle or reuse them whenever possible.

If you have continued till now, most likely it has clarified many queries and doubts that you had as a beginner. If you need some more information or understanding, please feel free to get in touch in one of the following ways:

Leaders in Responsible Travel

Responsible Travel practice is at the heart of every program that we offer in the Himalaya. World Expeditions have pioneered many unique philanthropic initiatives that benefit our staff, local communities and the environment. When you book one of our adventures you’re supporting a program that is committed to safety and sustainability.

Stay at our exclusive semi-permanent camps in Nepal

Four decades of feedback and experience has proven that camping provides the most authentic trekking experience. Across the Annapurna and Everest regions you’ll enjoy the extra comfort of our exclusive camps, which feature standing height tents, clean beds with mattresses and pillows, a heated dining room, composting sit down toilets and more. Do yourself and the environment a favour by choosing our minimal impact accommodations.

All meals on Nepal treks included

Did you know that meals on a 2 week tea-house based trek in Nepal could cost you in excess of US$800pp?! Value for money, peace of mind, looking after your health as well as the local landscapes are just some of the reasons why we believe it’s a wise decision to choose a Nepal trek with all meals included. Watch our ‘7 Reasons Why We Include Meals On Our Nepal Treks’ video on every Nepal trip page to learn even more.

World Firsts

We proudly pioneered the first ever trekking trip to Tibet (1991), and developed trails in Nepal and the Indian Himalaya that had never before been used commercially, including the Api Himal and a traverse from Kashmir to Ladakh through Zanskar (1983). We also piloted the first commercial opportunity to walk The Great Himalaya Trail (2010) linking the high passes from Nepal’s most eastern to western borders.

Innovative Active Itineraries

We’ve been organising treks, climbs and tours in the Himalaya for four decades. Our firsthand knowledge of the region is unmatched, and we continue to push the envelope each year by innovating new programs while also finessing our classics. From a short four-day family trek in the Annapurna region to a challenging mountain bike traverse from Tibet to Nepal, we’re sure to have something for every age, interest and fitness level.

Great Value, Highly Inclusive

On top of all meals, highly trained local guides, an experienced trekking and cooking crew and exceptional camping services, we also provide you with the use of a trek pack, which includes a quality sleeping bag, down or fibre fill jacket and insulated mat (valued at over US$500).

Expert Guides

Our guides in the field are the real keys to our success, making your experiences exceptional. From Tim Macartney-Snape, who with Greg Mortimer completed the first Australian summit of Mount Everest, to Bir Singh, one of Nepal’s most experienced guides—our leaders are the pillars of our Himalayan adventures.

Stay at our comfortable semi-permanent campsites in Nepal's Everest region&#160;-&#160;<i>Photo:&#160;Mark Tipple</i>

The countries of Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim and India present some of the world's poorest living conditions. According to the United Nations 2010 Human Development Report "environmental degradation intensifies inequality through adverse impacts on already disadvantaged people and inequalities in human development amplify environmental degradation". World Expeditions chooses to make a difference by putting in place initiatives that reduce our impact and giving back to the places and people we encounter. To minimise our impact on the natural environment we practice the '7 Principals of Leave No Trace', in addition to supporting local economies by employing guides and staff from local communities. Our Animal Welfare Code of Conduct, Child Welfare Code of Conduct and Porter Welfare Policy ensure the well-being of animals and children encountered on our adventures, as well as the mountain porters we employ on our treks.

Private eco campsites

In the Everest and Annapurna regions, our sustainable private campsites feature standing room, fixed two person tents equipped with raised beds, mattresses and pillows. Dining rooms offer a comfortable environment to dine and socialise with fellow trekkers, with cushioned seating, picture windows with mountain views and, at higher altitudes, a pot belly stove for warmth. Ablution blocks have western style sit toilets and wash basins.

Wilderness camping

Enjoy our fully supported, self-sufficient camping featuring quality two person tents with good ventilation that have been erected in scenic wilderness settings as well as a dining tent and a toilet tent with a sit toilet. Our crew take care of the logistics, including food preparation, as we focus on keeping our impact on the environment to a minimum.

In the Annapurna and Everest regions we have specially appointed eco lodges which adhere to our very specific criteria of not burning wood and follow our menu and hygiene guidelines.

In cities and large towns you will be accommodated in 3-4 star properties that are generally centrally located, atmospheric, and where we have seen a very high traveller satisfaction over many years.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
