  • A6984EGannah 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Would recommend first-time-visitors We booked this spontaneously 45 minutes before the start and had no problems. You could also buy the trip directly at the tourist Info, where you have to meet. We had a funny and lovely guide which name started with an M, but for the life of me i can't remember. She was knowledgeable, interacted with all the tour "members" - we were around 13 people -, and made us feel special (which is nice since the tour itself is not tailored and rather "standard-y", but that is totally fine for the price!!). We are very happy we did the tour and didn't just roam around aimlessly. For us, this being the first time in Ljubljana, it was a nice small walk with interesting information varying from architecture, history, general slovenian life to fun facts. Easy to digest info with an enthusiastic guide! Just be aware that even though it says you can bring dogs, they are not allowed on the funicular and in some buildings, so you'd have to miss out on those. If there was a "second part" with more in depth info or a bigger walking radius, we would book it for sure the next time! Read more Written October 6, 2023

  • Kathyleominster 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The best way to explore Ljubljana! We are really pleased that we got the Ljubljana card because it meant we made the most of our visit. We went to the tourist information centre as soon as we arrived, we bought a 48 hour card and booked onto one of the activities so that we could activate the card and then immediately use it to get to our accomodation to check in ( it doesn't activate immediately on public transport but this method worked). We did the following activities with our card in addition to using it for all our public transport. Walking tour of the city - excellent Zoo - excellent Electric train - poor Bike hire - excellent Boat trip - good Castle and funicular railway - excellent We started with the electric train which enabled us to get our bearings but was slow and tedious and the headphones/ sound worked intermittently. ( This is my only negative experience if the card). The train could do with an update of its audio tour which felt very much like a promotional advertisement for the other attractions. We were grateful when the driver stopped so we could get off and not get back on again ( it only made two stops near the beginning and then didn't stop at the remaining scheduled stops or we would have bailed earlier). However, we really enjoyed everything else that was on offer. The walking tour was the stand-out excellent experience on the card and our tour guide combined historical knowledge with a warm and entertaining style, meaning that we felt we really got to know Ljubljana as a result of doing the tour. We finished the tour at the castle, so did that next ( the tour included the funicular so we ended up being able to do that twice). The castle is an interesting place to explore and we also enjoyed the views while we had a picnic. We had some time left at the end of the day so took a bus to the Oo where we very much enjoyed seeing the animals until it torrentially rained which brought our visit to a hasty end ( there were places to hide from rain but it was nearly closing time anyway) The second day we hired bikes and found the cyanometer and enjoyed the park and followed that with a boat tour. The boat tour was enjoyable but lacked shade so was a little longer than we wished in the heat of the day. All in all we got to know this lovely town much better than we would have done without the card. Really fabulous 48 hours! Read more Written July 13, 2023

  • Y5123FGkens 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Would not book with them again! This was an absolutely horrible experience. We ended up caught in traffic due to a large run that was going on in the city, so we knew we would be a few minutes late and started calling and trying to reach the organizers, but no one answered the line despite multiple attempts. When we reached the office and met the team, they shrugged it off and said they didn't know why the phone went unanswered. They informed us that the tour didn't exist for the day and that the only person who was available for a tour could only provide a short, truncated tour, as she had a "much larger" group coming soon. When we incredulously asked what we should do, they told us to reach out to Trip Advisor and request a refund before they were no longer available for the afternoon. It definitely seemed like they didn't care about us since our tour ended up only being two people - and obviously, they had this "much larger" group in mind. It was very disheartening and frustrating. Buyer beware! Read more Written May 8, 2023

  • josst1997 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great for Toursits I bought the 3 day (72 hour) card on my first morning in the city. There is so much you can do with it you definitely get your moneys worth. If your hotel is a little further from the city center, you get free bus travel with the card (the map is in the back of the brochure they give you), which saves you from walking, especially if its rainy, or extremely warm/sunny. There's a huge amount of attractions you can visit. It is definitely worth checking the website first, just to make sure they're open when you're visiting, as I saw that some were closed on Sundays and Mondays. Also, take advantage of the walking tour and the electric city train. These are great for seeing the city, especially when you first arrive, and give great ideas of where you could spend more time later in your trip. There's a great selection of museums as well, especially the National Museum of Contemporary History and the House of Illusions. On the 3 days, I only spent 2 in Ljubljana (1 in Bled), but I still felt that I got more than my money's worth. I would definitely recommend. Read more Written July 19, 2022

Take a moustache tour of Ljubljana

Hop on your bike for a quirky facial hair-themed tour of Slovenia’s capital

  • Art & Culture

Words by Ronan O'Shea

A hairy experience in one of Europe best cycling cities, Ljubljana’s moustache bike tour follows in the footsteps of three of its most noteworthy residents – who all happened to have impressive whiskers, just like your guides. You’ll visit landmark museums but also vintage bars and other quirky sights.

The idea was the brainchild of Ljubljana Tourism and savvy Slovene marketing agency NeaCulpa, who realised a bike tour celebrating the lives and idiosyncrasies of Jože Plečnik, Ivan Cankar and Rihard Jakopič (an architect, a writer and a painter) was the best way to see the capital on two wheels.

A hirsute adventure

A hirsute adventure

The tour meets at Ljubljana’s Slovenian Tourist Information Centre. The rest is a secret. However, suffice it to say, while cycling with a trio of irreverent, moustachioed tour guides working for Moustache Tour Ljubljana you’ll get to explore some of the city’s most historic nooks and crannies.

Highlights include vintage bars and landmark museums, as well as enjoying a slice of potica cake. Yum.

The tour runs from April to September. It costs a measly €45 or, if you look at it another way, just €15 per moustache. Not too bad.

The Slovenian capital may be compact, but that doesn’t stop leafy, pretty Ljubljana from packing a punch when it comes to things to see and do. Here are 10 experiences not to miss out on during a trip.

King of the castle

Ljubljana Castle towers above the city on its own hilltop – presumably the very thing that made it an attractive place for a fortress in the first place. Although there’s a funicular to take visitors there and back, if you’ve got a spring in your step, hike up the well-signed path through the woods instead. You’ll find phenomenal 360-degree views atop the viewing tower, a “virtual castle” film showing the building’s history, a chapel and penitentiary exhibit, plus two onsite museums and a restaurant overlooking the city. Open June to September 9am-9pm; shorter opening hours the remainder of the year. Entry €13 (£12) (includes return funicular journey) or free with a Ljubljana card (as are most other activities included in this piece).

Stand up and paddle

See the city from the Ljubljanica river’s blue-green waters on a stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) excursion with Bananaway . Participants can choose from an “urban” SUP tour, which takes them through the heart of the city, or an “into the wild” SUP tour, which heads away from town, winding up in the countryside within a five-minute paddle. All equipment, guides and introduction to SUP included. (Just be warned – if it’s raining tours may be called off.) Two-hour tour: €39pp.

Follow the moustaches

Launched a year ago, the quirky Moustache Tour takes visitors on a journey all around the city, framed through the lives of Ljubljana’s three most prominent men with facial hair: Joze Plecnik (architect), Ivan Cankar (writer) and Rihard Jakopic (artist). In this whirlwind bike tour, you get to see some of the city’s best attractions, drink a hot tea with rum and even get a free, snazzy moustache T-shirt. The price of €45 includes bike rental, tour guide, a drink and cake and brief entry into six attractions. Runs every Friday at 3pm, lasting three to four hours.

The 10 best under-the-radar European cities, from Malmö to Tallinn

Snap a weird selfie.

Looking for an hour of the bizarre? The Museum of Illusions is as fun as it is ridiculous, offering a host of interactive exhibitions over three floors, many of which are set up to be captured on your smartphone. It finishes up with a mind-bending vortex tunnel and a range of brain-busting puzzles to remind you why Mensa never pursued you for membership. Open Monday to Friday, 8am-4pm; entry €9.50.

We heart art

Hit up the Museum of Modern Art , a genuinely lovely space to do some chin stroking and art appreciation. It’s dedicated to Slovenian contemporary art from the 20th century and features a natty cafe in the basement. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-6pm; entry €5.

Elsewhere, the International Centre of Graphic Arts sits in a gorgeous location in Tivoli Park, displaying the largest Slovenian collection of modern fine-art prints and original publications – it houses more than 10,000 pieces. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-6pm; entry €5.

Eat a gut-busting delicacy

Struklji – hefty baked rolls of filo pastry – are a true Slovenian favourite. They come in sweet or savoury varieties, packed with different flavours between the layers of dough and topped with breadcrumbs. Tarragon is typical, but make sure you follow it up with a dessert struklji such as raspberry or blueberry.

Down the hatch

For a home-grown beer, swing by Union next to Tivoli park. It’s on the site of the 155-year-old Union brewery and some of the libations they serve can’t be found anywhere else in the city. Don’t miss out on the brewery tour – the 90-minute experience is brilliant, taking you through the entire beer-making process with generous servings of Union lager and amber beer along the way; €14.

Walk in the park

Tivoli Park is Ljubljana’s biggest, spanning a whopping 5sq km. Designed in 1813 by French engineer Jean Blanchard, it was created by joining together the parks surrounding Podturn and Cekin Mansions.

These days, it draws locals and visitors alike with horse chestnut tree-lined walks, landscaped ornamental flower beds, outdoor galleries and numerous statues and fountains. There are several trails for hiking and the park also encompasses Roznik hill, atop of which stands the jaunty pink 18th-century Church of the Visitation and a shrine to famous Slovenian writer Ivan Canker.

Grab some street food

Open Kitchen – a collection of stalls showcasing cuisine from some of the city’s best restaurants – happens every Friday in Pogacar Square. Buy street food from top Slovenian chefs to a soundtrack of live music. Open from mid-March to October, weather permitting.

  • How to spend the perfect weekend in Ljubljana

Just a 40-minute drive from the city are two hard-hitting attractions in one place: the famed Postojna Cave and the neighbouring The Secret Rooms of Hotel Jama , a new experience for this year. The latter is a fun interactive tour of a hidden communication centre dating back to when the country was part of the former Yugoslavia, uncovered while the hotel was being renovated in 2016. Led by a guide who hams up the secret service element, the experience is high-tech and truly immersive. Be warned: the walls have ears. Tours last 90 minutes and cost €25.

Celebrate Movember with a Moustache Tour

Ljubljana (pop. 293,000, capital of Slovenia is one of the Europe's smallest. It’s never crowded – but also never boring. 50,000 university students give it its youthful appeal, and as an economic and cultural hub of Slovenia, it has a lot to offer to locals and visitors alike. We love it because it has an exciting mix of different cultural traditions, is one of Europe's top new culinary destinations and is a city with a green soul. WORLD’S FIRST MOUSTACHE TOUR

What happens if you combine Slovenian history and sporting activity? The result is the newest addition to an already broad selection of Ljubljana cycling tours, the  Moustache tour . Worlds first moustache tour takes creativity on the whole new level as it introduces its participants to the lives and habits of three Slovenian giants, who played a major role in Slovenian history:  an architect Jože Plečnik, writer  Ivan Cankar and a pianter Rihard Jakopič, who all wore a moustache. This unusual and unique rout takes us on a stroll around Ljubljana and visits the favourite places of all three iconic moustachioed men – visionary room of Plečnik, favourite bar of Cankar and the National Gallery of Jakopič.

And who are these three moustachioed men, who left such a significant imprint on Ljubljana life then and now:

  • Jože Plečnik

Jože Plečnik is one of world’s most important pioneers of modern architecture who marked Ljubljana’s architecture in the way Gaudi did it for Barcelona. He constructed most of Ljubljana main attractions from triple bridge, covered buildings of Ljubljana, Križanske Summer Theater, Trnovo Pier, Cobbler’s Bridge, Žale Cemetary, National and University Library (NUK) and many more. His imprint on Ljubljana, unique urban specialty, is one of the most significant 20 th  century total art works in the world.

He has such importance for Ljubljana that visitors can explore his work on a special separate tour  “Plečnik walking tour”  or in the  “Bicycle tour through Plečnik Ljubljana” .

  • Ivan Cankar

Ivan Cankar, writer, play writer and poet, is the greatest Slovenian writer who left behind a broad creative work opus in Slovenian literature. His work has such a powerful impact on Slovenian cultural heritage that the largest cultural and congress canter in Slovenia, Cankarjev dom,CD Congress Center, carries his name.

In addition, we mark the year 2018 as Cankar year since it commemorates 100 th  anniversary of his death.  To this jubilee there are two simultaneous  temporary exhibition projects  available for visitors, one in  Cankarjev dom and the other in City Museum of Ljubljana.

  • Rihard Jakopič

Richard Jakopič was the main character of Slovenian painting in the first half of 20 th  century. However, until today 1200 sketches and painting and approximately 650 drawing are distributed among private owners, National and Modern gallery. Most of his work is exhibited in the National Gallery in Ljubljana

So, moustache tour has it all. It is a fun and interactive activity,  something one always seeks to free his or her mind during vacations. Furthermore, it  is an activity that broadens ones horizons about the cultural heritage – something often forgotten during  our hectic daily routines.

Slovenia Unique Experiences @ Ljubljana

Back to news

We start in the capital and present two of the first nine Slovenia Unique Experiences: the Moustache Tour, a bike tour following in the footsteps of three larger-than-life moustachioed men and the Ljubljana Castle Just For You – A Private Castle Experience.

Slovenia Unique Experiences @ Ljubljana

From the beginning of April through the end of September, the Ljubljana Tourist Board is offering a unique cycling tour associated with the life and work of three great moustachioed men who left their mark on Ljubljana in the first half of the previous century, that was before it even became a capital city.

The Moustache Tour is not only a slightly different tour of Ljubljana but promises a special atmosphere. The tour follows the footsteps of architect Jože Plečnik, writer Ivan Cankar, and painter Rihard Jakopič and will take visitors to Plečnik House, the National Gallery, even atop the Rožnik hill, a popular promenade for Ljubljana residents, among others.

Above the city, at Ljubljana Castle, an unforgettable Ljubljana Castle Just For You – A Private Castle Experience  awaits. The Ljubljana Castle, which is frequently on the list of Ljubljana’s visitors, can now be experienced through a private tour with costumed characters which conjure up a trip through the history of the city. The story, with its elaborate dramaturgy, maintains an individual approach and keeps guests engaged at all times. The main feature of the product is the experience of being guided by a personal castle assistant.

Disciplinirani Plečnik, boemski Cankar in karizmatični Jakopič .

The Bike Slovenia Green Gourmet Cycling tour is the perfect itinerary for adventurous, eco-conscious travelers who demand everything: great cuisine, pleasure, adventure, and responsibility. Combining food, Slovenia Green-certified destinations, beautiful and varied landscapes, challenging and safe cycling routes, and “the world’s most sustainable country,” the Bike Slovenia Green Gourmet Cycling tour has something for everyone but never forgets its routes – the communities scattered across this beautiful and magnificent Central European nation.

The cycling tour explores Slovenia, the European Region of Gastronomy 2021 and visit only green-certified destinations , promising an authentic taste of Slovenia’s renowned cuisine and wine, including potential stops at Michelin-awarded restaurants.

The Bike Slovenia Green Gourmet Route begins in Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana , from there transfer is organized to the Soča Valley . Cyclists then pedal to Brda and  Vipava Valley , roll into the Karst Region , and then take another train back to Ljubljana and furthermore towards the east. After discovering the Sava River region , travelers go north to Ptuj , along the Drava River, to Maribor .

The Bike Slovenia Green Gourmet Cycling tour is a route that travels at human speed and makes nature, food, great wine, and green-certified destinations its main must-see activities. But, perhaps the most important aspect of the new itinerary is that it makes the people along the trail its most important asset.

FROM LJUBLJANA TO SOČA VALLEY

After reaching Ljubljana , take a deep breath and get ready for the adventure ahead.

From Slovenia’s main city, you’ll have a transfer organized to Soča Valley, where the cycling adventure will begin on the next day. Soča Valley has been recognized with a Slovenia Green  certification .

Cyclists will overnight in Kobarid , which is one of the region’s most important towns and the site of the Kobarid Museum . Besides being another magnet for cycling tours, hiking, fishing, and kayaking, Kobarid is also the location of the restaurant Hiša Franko and its chef Ana Roš, who is the only recipient of three Michelin Stars in Slovenia. Hungry cyclists will find that many of the restaurants in the area place a priority on responsible methods and use only local ingredients.

Houses by the Ljubljanica river

FROM KOBARID TO BRDA

You’ll start your second day with a bike ride to Tolmin. From there you’ll cycle along rivers Soča and Idrijca to the train station Most na Soči. A train will take you to Kanal and from there you’ll firstly be cycling on the local roads on the right riverbank of river Soča and a picturesque cycling trail along the Soča River to Plave and on to Solkan.

Leaving the emerald waters of the Soča River the bike tour discovers a different sort of richness: wine country. Heading south for just over 50 kilometers, and paralleling the Italian border, the bike tour rolls into the Goriška brda Region, which is actively developing its sustainable tourism offer all year round.

For a short time after reaching Solkan the cycling route leads you through the Italian side of Goriška brda, climbing through the Oslavje and Števerjan villages. You then reach Slovenia again very soon and cycle a bit more uphill towards the village of Hum.

In the place of alpine meadows, vineyards dominate the new landscape. In every direction, grapevines methodically line fields into the distance and drop behind the horizon.

For many travelers, these gentle, rolling hills recall visions of Tuscany. The region and its wineries are famous for their hospitality, but they are now becoming increasingly well-known across the globe for their high-quality vintages.

After cycling through the border villages the cycling route passes the view tower in Gonjače which stands tall in the Goriška brda and offers a fantastic, panoramic view. On the east, you’ll see the Vipava Valley, the next stage of your cycling adventure.

Reaching the Gonjače view tower means you’re almost finished with your first day of cycling. From there you reach Šmartno village in a very short time and you can finally enjoy a well-deserved break with a view over the vineyards. The final destination of the day, the village of Šmartno, home to some of the most prominent wine growers in the region, offers the chance to end the day with some excellent wine tasting and a hearty local meal.

In case you’d like to choose a harder route variant for the second day, we’ve also prepared this option. It goes from Kobarid steeply upwards to Livek, past Nebesa and Livške Ravne high up to the Kolovrat ridge where an open-air museum Kolovrat is located. This First World War Museum stands right on the spot of the third Italian defense line from the First World War. After taking a look around the outside museum, moderate cycling continues through Lig, Kambreško, and just under the peak of Korada to Gonjače. After reaching Gonjače the route’s ending is the same as with the easier option of the trail.

Cyclist by the emerald soča river

FROM BRDA TO THE VIPAVA VALLEY

Though it is difficult to pull yourself away from the Goriška brda Region, the next stage of your bike trip offers another full and rewarding day of excellent cycling and top-end gastronomy.

Lonely Planet wrote this about this beautiful area of Slovenia: “The [Vipava] Valley is green and beautiful, the food and wine are of superior quality. A perfect destination for a relaxed and at the same time active vacation.”

This stage of your cycling vacation, which is about 56 km long, passes the Italian side of Goriška brda for a short time at the beginning of the day. It goes to the center of Gorica (or Gorizia), which is on the Italian side of the border. In Gorica, you cross the border and shortly afterward join the cycling route on the outskirts of the Slovenian city Nova Gorica, which is a green destination with a golden Slovenia Green mark.

Nearby, Europe Square which connects the cities Nova Gorica and Gorica or Gorizia, symbolizing unity and connection between neighboring nations – a unique experience on your bike tour of Slovenia.

From there the route soon joins and follows the crystal clear and magical Vipava River, which is famous for its trout and unparalleled fishing. As your bike tour enters the Karst region, you’ll continue into another incredible wine region – home to the largest number of indigenous wine varieties in Slovenia.

Vipava is certified as a Slovenia Green certified  destination with its historic castle ruins, incredible wine, and food. On the way, cyclists will pass Ajdovščina, which is the second-largest town in the valley and a Slovenia Green Silver destination .

Cyclin by the vineyards

FROM VIPAVA VALLEY TO ŠTANJEL

Like with the Goriška brda region, leaving the Vipava Valley will be difficult. As is the case with every region in Slovenia, there is always the sensation that you could just stay where you are for a few more days to cycle, eat, explore, and just take in the majesty of the scenery. Once you’ve pulled yourself away and finished that cup of coffee while enjoying the lush green panorama, it’s time to start your cycling adventure in the unique Karst region .

Heading south and rolling west to the Karst landscape that acts as a connection between the Alps, vineyards, green valleys, and the Adriatic Sea. This region is famous for its incredible caves, open landscapes, horses, and mouthwatering — and locally sourced — food.

The fourth day of the bike tour is characterized by rolling terrain and moderately difficult riding because you’ll have to gain some altitude to reach the Karst plateau from the Vipava Valley. But since we’ve prepared different route versions for this day that vary in difficulty, we can adjust it to your physical condition. The easier variant includes less ascent while the hardest variant on the other hand includes ascending to the beautiful and high Karst ridges that offer fantastic panoramic views.

The day ends with a climb to Štanjel , where cyclists are rewarded with a wonderfully picturesque perched medieval village, where architecture, culture, and heritage merge. The views across the karst landscape are worth the ride alone. The real magic here happens while taking in an art gallery, seeing the castle, or visiting the  Ferrari Garden . As dusk falls, relaxing in the main square with a top-end meal and bottle of wine will make anyone glad they stopped.

FROM ŠTANJEL TO LIPICA

Cycling deeper into the Karst region gives cyclists another day and stage to get to know one of the most important, beautiful, and fragile areas of both Slovenia and Europe. The Karst region has a mind-blowing amount of natural diversity where forests, rocks, and water create their own climate. The result of this crossroads between culture, crafts, and climate creates, as one might expect, a fantastic growing zone for fruits, vegetables, and grapes for world-class wine.

Gourmet cyclists will be thrilled to discover that this is wine AND prosciutto country (called pršut here)! Between the village of Štanjel and the town of Komen, the Ščuka family estate , in the village of Kobjeglava, produces some of the best  pršut anywhere … and welcomes visitors for tastings. This makes it a perfect stop during your cycling vacation.

Just down the road, Komen is another Instagram-worthy perched village. This is also where the Slovenia Green Gourmet Route intersects with the  Walk of Peace hiking trail, which pays homage to the First World War front line that once ran across this stretch of land. History and respect meet in Komen, a beautiful place where excellent food, wine, and cycling intersect.

Traveling south and east from Komen, riders meander their way to the village of  Lipica where the cycling stage ends. This is the site of the famous stud farm, where the white, thoroughbred Lipizzan horses have been bred since the 16 th century.

moustache tour ljubljana

FROM LIPICA TO LJUBLJANA

The Škocjan Caves, which have been on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage list since 1986, are only about ten kilometers away. This breathtaking system features underground caves, passages, collapsed valleys, natural bridges, and swallow holes carved by the Reka River. It’s a must-visit for anyone fascinated by natural wonders on their cycling trip in Slovenia.

After visiting this magnificent Karst phenomenon you’ll head towards Divača and take a train with your gear back to the capital city of  Ljubljana , which is both a Slovenia Green  Gold destination and arguably not just the greenest capital in Europe but also one of the welcoming places to enjoy great food outside in the town center among visitors and locals alike.

After replenishing your energy you can get to know Ljubljana in a different light by heading on one of the  guided tours , where learning about culture is intertwined with tasting food, beer, and wine. One such walk is the  Moustache Tour . Other culinary outings visit the growing number of  gourmet spots  scattered across the metropolis.

If you are in the city on a Friday, visit the Open Kitchen  or  Odprta Kuhna in Slovenian. From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., dozens of chefs cook dishes from nearly every tradition and continent to an eager audience of gourmands, who have known for years what the world is starting to discover: the Slovenian capital is a gourmet capital.

As an additional cycling trip for day 6, you can optionally do the circular Plečnik cycling route which lasts for 2 hours and leads you to Plečnik’s heritage in Trnovo, the center of Ljubljana, Žale graveyard, and Tivoli Park.

Cycling Ljubljana Tivoli

FROM LJUBLJANA TO KRŠKO

Exploring the eastern half of Slovenia adds another dimension to the Bike Green Gourmet Route, making it a truly comprehensive cycling  experience.

After opening the day with a train ride east from Ljubljana, riders will deboard in Hrastnik and jump on their saddles. From here, cyclists will cross the Sava River and then follow a narrow canyon to Radeče and further on into the welcoming Posavje Valley.

Today’s stage, around 51 kilometers in length, is all about relaxed, easy cycling and great wine along quiet roads surrounded by vineyards on excursions like the Castle Wine Stories of Posavje. The only exception to easy cycling is the short, but steep final climb from Krško to Tri lučke.

What often intrigues travelers here is how little they know about this part of the country. The next thing many visitors notice is how much the region stays true to the values that have made it a land of rich bounty for so many centuries.

Though the scenery is stunning for the entire ride, staying overnight at Krško makes this stage worth it all by itself.

Cycling through green fields

FROM KRŠKO TO PODČETRTEK

The next day — a hearty 45-kilometer stage — is slightly more challenging, but no less beautiful as it rambles south and then east until it eventually straddles the Croatian border and then heads north.

At the beginning of this day’s route, you’ll cycle above Krško with perfect views back down to the Sava valley and afterward, after some longer climbs, reach Kozjansko. On top of a longer ascent and just above the small city called Podsreda the Podsreda castle is located. This is the most medieval castle among Slovenian castles and an information center for Kozjansko Regional Park is located in its basement. Kozjansko Regional Park is the largest Slovenian protected area and has earned a golden Slovenia Green Park mark.

The route then makes its way to Podčetrtek — a town and Slovenia Green Gold destination surrounded by nature, spas, gourmet experiences, and a chance to interact with forest and mountain wildlife in a unique way.

This area boasts numerous attractions, perfect for a cyclist’s getaway.

Cycling the Slovenia green gourmet route

FROM PODČETRTEK TO PTUJ

Wake up ready for a scenic 62-kilometer stage on rolling terrain. Soon after 10 km along the nice asphalt cycling path, you’ll reach the town of Rogaška Slatina . This  Slovenia Green destination is one of the country’s oldest spa sites. The mineral water, which produces the well-known Donat Mg water, has the world’s highest content of magnesium.

But, Rogaška Slatina isn’t only about spas and springs. There is also a wonderful wine road here. As well, the town has a long history, dating back to 1655, of glass production and with the artistry of its creation being some of the most impressive on the planet.

After Rogaška the route continues north to the ancient, yet thriving Ptuj , which is Slovenia’s oldest town. Visitors marvel at Ptuj’s magical lake, buzzing cobbled streets, castles, and festivals showcasing outstanding wine, food, and art.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Ptuj, which straddles the Drava River, is a magnet for visitors — especially active travelers. A tradition of wellness and spa possibilities along with a full calendar of events make this a premier stop for cyclists along the Slovenia Green Gourmet Route.

To spice up your day on the bike tour, add an optional short but steep climb through Haloze. The reward? Breathtaking views of Ptuj’s wine-growing hills, fields, and shimmering lake. Perfect for those seeking a bit more challenge on their cycling trip.

Cycling towards Ptuj castle

FROM PTUJ TO MARIBOR

This stage takes you on easygoing asphalt and gravel sections along the Drava River. Today’s trail, which is about 32 kilometers long, follows the Drava Cycling Route and makes all of the area’s incredible and lush strengths immediately available the way only bicycling can.

As riders roll to the end of the Bike Green Gourmet Route and the final destination of Maribor — a city with Slovenia Green Bronze certification — they will discover the world’s oldest vine , which has its house and museum. Make sure to relax with great food and wine as your Bike Slovenia Green: Gourmet Cycling tour pedaling odyssey comes to a close. The city is a hub for excellent and Michelin-recognized restaurants and bistros.

But Maribor is more than just a city with a beautiful river and wine. The city has museums, theaters, and art galleries to explore between escapes to hiking trails with panoramic photo-ops of the Drava River. Take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy Slovenia’s second-biggest city and the main metropolis in the east.

Cyclist crossing bridge across Drava

MARIBOR LOOP

Before taking the train back to Ljubljana, we’ll spend half a day investigating the cycling routes around Maribor. There are urban paths, mountain bike trails, and connections to larger networks. In all, the city is the headquarters for hundreds of kilometers of cycling itineraries through the area, perfect for a short cycling trip or a longer cycling adventure.

An interesting cycling leads you from Maribor to the popular viewpoint on St. Urban. From there, a beautiful panorama of the second-largest city Maribor opens in front of your eyes. The cycling route then leads past the village Gaj nad Mariborom to Zgornja Kungota where an excellent, Michelin star-rated restaurant Hiša Denk is located. After having a delicious multi-course meal you can slowly start returning to Maribor. You can choose either to cycle along the gradual cycling trail and local roads or you can opt for an automobile transfer to the route’s starting point.

Before boarding a train back to the capital Ljubljana, wave goodbye to the Slovenia Green Gourmet Route — the world’s first all-green-certified gourmet cycling itinerary — and congratulate yourself for being a responsible traveler who knows that the destination’s most important ingredients are its food, culture, and the people who produce them.
