Visiting New Jersey Is Now Possible From Your Bedroom — Here’s How

cleaning services

If you’re big into traveling — or just bored senseless within the confines of your house — this whole quarantine situation can make your mind wander to the days where you could see places that aren’t the walls of your living room or bedroom. Maybe you miss flying abroad, or maybe you just miss driving down to the shore to walk on the boardwalk and people watch. Maybe you miss the vibe of your favorite restaurant in town or weekend trips to your go-to state park.

If this quarantine has revived your love for your home state, then we’ve got the fix for you. New Jersey in the House is now bringing New Jersey directly to you. The New Jersey Division of Travel + Tourism has launched a new digital hub for all the adventurers at heart who are still seeking the sights, sounds, and spirit of New Jersey while stuck at home. The launch came in response to the current travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The site features a wide range of virtual experiences, as well as downloadable backgrounds for video meetings, livestream webcams, games, and even the “Ultimate New Jersey” playlist — you’re going to want to check this out. Get to know the Garden State and the bustling personalities of each region through New Jersey in the House.

About the Site

Developed as a feature on www.visitnj.org , New Jersey In the House incorporates multi-platform components that allow all would-be-travelers to engage in virtual experiences throughout the state. Read on to learn about the sites hallmark features.

The wonderfully diverse state of New Jersey is certainly one worth checking out. From beautiful beaches and mountains to boardwalks and Atlantic City resorts, New Jersey quite literally has attractions for every personality type. No wonder that even for its small size, it’s still the 11th most populated state in the U.S.

New Jersey officials are also rallying in support of this interactive site. “With ‘New Jersey In the House’, we’ve created one digital hub that integrates all of the tremendous work produced statewide by our top attractions, museums, libraries, and restaurants, allowing residents and prospective travelers to stay virtually connected to and engaged with our great state,” said New Jersey Secretary of State Tahesha Way.

“The goal of the campaign is to not only serve as a valuable resource and online tool but also to provide entertainment and inspiration for future travel,” said Jeffrey Vasser, the executive director of the New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism. “We are very much looking forward to the time when we can welcome everyone back to visit.”

The Site’s Key Features

Go on a tour with New Jersey in the House — virtually. The site allows everyone who is either bored at home or simply missing the sites of New Jersey to visit their favorite exhibits or explore new ones. You can see some of New Jersey’s most prestigious museums online, or even get interactive — participate in educational programming online from state public libraries and attractions, including a virtual storytime at NJ’s own Adventure Aquarium.

Let’s start with the “Ultimate New Jersey” Spotify playlist . The playlist can be downloaded for free on Spotify and it consists of over 70 songs from some of the state’s most talented native artists. The New Jersey playlist includes the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Southside Johnny and The Smithereens, Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, Queen Latifah, and Count Basie. Download the playlist to check out the rest of the influential New Jersey legends who made the list

The site also offers video conference backgrounds for those living room Zoom meetings. Instead of showing off the clutter of snacks behind you in your kitchen, enhance your meetings with a downloadable Garden State background image. Have your next video conference in any one of six iconic New Jersey destinations.

Nj Virtual Tours 02

Spice up your quarantine diet with the site’s virtual cooking classes. With access to virtual cooking lessons on Instagram Live from New Jersey’s most celebrated chefs, cooks, and restaurants — like Tony Boloney’s — you can learn something new in the kitchen every week.

Finally, never feel bored again with the site’s daily livestreams. State attractions — such as Diggerland and Cape May Zoo — host regular livestreams to showcase animals and activities. You can even bring the beach to your home with access to more than 40 live streams along the 130 miles of beautiful New Jersey shoreline.

Nj Virtual Tours 05

New Jersey in the House boosts online Garden State themed games, as well. The two NJ branded games are New Jersey Travel Bingo and an NJ edition of “This or That.” Keep up with your New Jersey Trivia, stay occupied, and keep your mind stimulated with these online games {which are also available for sharing via Instagram Stories}.

The foyer is where the Governor and First Lady greet guests who are visiting from all over New Jersey and beyond.

Drumthwacket was built in 1835 by Charles Smith Olden. Mr. Olden was born in 1799 in the small white farmhouse that still stands on the property today. When Charles was a young man, he moved from Princeton, New Jersey, to New Orleans in the state of Louisiana and became a successful merchant. While in New Orleans, he greatly admired the Greek Revival style of homes which was inspired by plantation architecture. On his return to Princeton in 1834, Mr. Olden built Drumthwacket, in the Greek Revival style, for his new wife, Phoebe Ann Smith.

The residence was originally smaller than what it is today. The East and West wings on either side of the home were added by Drumthwacket’s second owner, Moses Taylor Pyne. Governor Olden named his new home “Drumthwacket,” a Scots Gaelic phrase meaning “wooded hill.” In 1860, Mr. Olden was elected Governor of New Jersey, becoming the first Governor to live at Drumthwacket.

Dining Room

Looking around the dining room, you will notice signs that this large room was once two rooms.

When Governor Olden built Drumthwacket in 1835, the front portion of the room was the formal parlor (a sitting room in a private house); the back was his library. The second private owner Moses Taylor Pyne removed the dividing wall and created one large dining room. Mr. Pyne entertained a larger group of guests and adapted Drumthwacket to that purpose.

Signs that this was once two rooms include the structural support beam midway through this dining area, two fireplaces, two chandeliers, and doors indicating entrances and exits for two rooms.

As in the dining room, the parlor was originally two rooms when Governor and Mrs. Olden lived at Drumthwacket. Notice the two fireplaces, different ceiling heights, and the elaborate molding on one side versus the simpler moldings on the other

The room at the front of the house was referred to as the ‘morning room’ because it was usually bright and filled with light. Mrs. Olden would begin her day in this room. She would meet with the house staff and discuss the day’s activities.

The room at the back of the house was the dining room. Drumthwacket was built from wood, and as such, the fear of fire was always a concern. For this reason, the kitchen was located outside. Meals were prepared outdoors and brought into the residence through the door beside the fireplace.

The Music Room is the first of three rooms added to the western side of the home by Drumthwacket’s second owner, Moses Taylor Pyne. Known as the “West Wing,” this 1900-1901 addition also includes a magnificent library as well as the Governor’s study.

With its ornate plasterwork, paneling, and beautiful grand piano, the Music Room often serves as the backdrop for fine art exhibitions by New Jersey artists. It is also used by the Governor and the First Lady for receptions such as Black History Month and Diwali, in addition to others held throughout the year.

While the Music Room serves as the gathering space for important events today, it served a much different purpose for the mansion’s third owner, Abram Spanel, who purchased the mansion in 1940 at the onset of World War II. Find Mr. Spanel’s photograph in the Music Room to learn more about his extraordinary life.

The library was most likely a favorite room of Moses Taylor Pyne, who, at the age of 28, purchased Drumthwacket from Governor Olden’s widow in 1883. As Drumthwacket’s second owner, Mr. Pyne, together with his wife Margaretta, transformed Drumthwacket into a grand estate. Noted architect Raleigh C. Gildersleeve (1869-1944) was hired to add two large wings to the house: first the East wing, for a kitchen and servants’ quarters, and then the West wing with the music room, library, and study. When completed in 1905, Drumthwacket looked very much like it does today.

Mr. Pyne lived at Drumthwacket as a gentleman farmer – that is, he had cows, sheep, horses, and even peacocks on his property but hired a farmer to take care of the immense estate, which included almost 300 acres. Princetonians were welcome to stroll the grounds designed by Daniel Webster Langton, a prominent Morristown, NJ landscape architect and one of the eleven founding members of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Visitors could stop by the stables or greenhouses while meandering through the beautiful gardens that included serene ponds, bridges, fountains, and even a bowling green and lawn tennis court

Today, the property consists of 12 acres, and while the fountains and other landscape features no longer exist, visitors can enjoy the residence’s beautiful Italianate gardens, which capture the spirit of this grand era.

Governor’s Study

Located at the end of the west wing, the study is a small, horseshoe- shaped room. The door leading from the library to the study can only be locked or unlocked from inside the study to ensure Mr. Pyne’s privacy when he was reading or writing important papers. Directly opposite the room’s stone fireplace is a beautiful semi-circular bowed window.

The study looks out on the Princeton Battlefield where, on January 3, 1777, George Washington won an important battle against the British during the American Revolution. During the desperate battle, American troops led by Washington surprised and defeated a force of British Regulars. Coming at the end of “The Ten Crucial Days” which saw the well-known night crossing of the Delaware River and two battles in Trenton, the Battle of Princeton gave Washington his first victory against the British Regulars on the field.

What Can Be Included in a Virtual Tour?

Customize your virtual tour with impressive tools that enhance the experience with ambiance and information.

GOOGLE STREET VIEW

Included in the project cost, your virtual tour is uploaded to Google Street View. Visitors using GSV to look for your location will see “See Inside” appear when they click on your business. This can also help increase your website ranking on Google.

MUSIC OR SOUNDS THROUGHOUT THE TOUR

Provide music for your visitors to add a sense of ambiance. Or fill the room with sounds of the location, like the ocean for a beachfront home or clinking dishes and crowd murmur for a restaurant. Each spot can have it’s own individual sound.

LINK TO OTHER PAGES OR INFORMATION

Perhaps an external website will provide your visitors with additional information you don’t have on your site or from a manufacturer or partner site. Links pop up in new browser tabs, so they don’t lose your tour.

Welcome your visitors, give your elevator pitch, a brief history, or mention what your hours of business are. Different areas can even have a differnet narration or sound effect, perfect for home tours that can describe room dimensions. Explain different areas of your space as visitor explore.

MENUS AND BROCHURES

Pop up your restaurant’s menu or company’s brochure from an image of one laying on a table or from a sign. One can even be added later if it’s not physically there during the shoot.

PHOTOS & VIDEOS

Have a photo or video of an event or details about a product that visitors should see? Hot-links to a single photo, a slideshow of photos, or a video can pop-up on screen from anywhere. Show it off with a click or a tap.

CUSTOM INTERFACE

Add your logo, company name, and tagline to the main interface. Include a quick-navigation bar to allow visitors to jump to key areas. Add buttons to turn off music, display or hide instructions, and much more.

SCAVENGER HUNT

Engage visitors by having them find objest around your place. Obvious or hidded, this makes for a fun way of hooking visitors into looking for promotions or finding information about your facility.

See the stunning tour beneath the Battleship New Jersey fans are paying $225 to experience

Tours of the Battleship New Jersey as it sits in dry dock began this month, giving visitors a rare chance to see the hull of a fully exposed battleship and an opportunity to walk beneath a massive piece of American history.

The USS New Jersey , the most decorated battleship in U.S. Navy history, left its home pier on the Camden waterfront and was towed to the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard for major repairs on March 27.

Public tours are being offered on weekends through the end of May while the battleship undergoes restoration at the shipyard.

Tickets and can be purchased through the Battleship New Jersey museum’s website for $225. The tours are limited to people ages 16 or older. Veterans who served on the battleship can get discounted tickets for $170.

As of Thursday, more than 70% of tickets have been sold, according to officials.

For Libby Jones, who has been the Battleship New Jersey museum’s director of eduction for six years, the guided dry dock tours are a big change of pace.

The first weekend of tours, which began on April 6, completely sold out. People from around the country and the world have come to see the 887-feet long decommissioned warship out of water, said Jones, who serves as a tour guide.

“We’ve seen people from all over,” Jones said. “We saw folks from Switzerland ... somebody came from the Philippines just for a tour.”

Before joining the dry dock tour, visitors are reminded to dress appropriately and wear steel-toed shoes and sturdy pants because it’s an active worksite. Complimentary commemorative branded hats and protective eyewear are provided, along with steel toe covers for those who need them, officials said.

The tours, conducted in groups of about 10, begin at the top of the dock with museum directors delving into the history and ongoing work being done on the battleship.

Then, visitors descend into the dock, approximately 50 feet deep, to get an up-close look at the hull and the ship’s 18-foot tall propellers. And those taking the tour can touch the vessel.

Tour guides then switch on the lights on their hard hats to lead the group underneath the 45,000-ton ship for an experience that has never been offered before. The ship is currently elevated on about 360 blocks, a few feet above the ground, so those attending need to crouch down beneath the ship during the tour.

While there have been no injuries reported, children under 16 are not allowed on tours because it is an active worksite, musuem officials said. And, because climbing steep flights of stairs to get into and out of the site is required, the tour is not wheelchair or walker accessible.

Towards the end of the tour, as the group makes its way to the front tip of the vessel, visitors will find some of the best views for photos, guides said. When you look up at the ship from the front, you get a feel for just how massive the battleship is, Jones said.

Depending on the day the tour is booked, the public can get to see various stages of the battleship’s restoration.

Workers are repainting the ship’s hull, repairing the anti-corrosion system underneath the ship, and inspecting the through-hull openings. Also, the ship’s zinc anodes, used to prevent corrosion, will be replaced with aluminum, a better choice for the ship’s freshwater environment in the Delaware River.

Earlier this month, workers were power washing the hull to remove mud, old paint and any leftover debris, before it gets coated with fresh paint.

About 5,200 gallons of paint will be used to repaint the ship’s hull a traditional red color, said museum curator Ryan Szimanski.

Dry dock tour tickets are still available but nearly sold out, officials said.

“We’ve got slots left, but they’re selling quick,” Jones said.

Mandy Trunzo, of Palmerton, Pennsylvania, first became a Battleship New Jersey supporter about 18 years ago when she brought a group of Girl Scouts on an overnight tour of the ship in Camden. She was among the first set of people to secure a ticket for the first week of sold-out tours.

“This was an amazing once in a lifetime experience for my fiancé, Vincent, and I,” Trunzo said. “To be able to go underneath a 45,000-ton battleship is an amazing experience.”

The entire dry dock repair process, which will cost about $10 million, is expected to take about two months. Afterwards, the ship will return home to Camden, where it has served as a museum for 25 years.

Funding for the project came from various sources, including $5 million from the 2024 state budget, a $750,000 grant from the New Jersey Historic Trust and a $3.25 million bond issued with backing from Camden County. The museum is working to cover the rest of the repair costs through its private fundraisers, officials said.

The Battleship New Jersey, also known as “Big J,” is the adorned with 19 battle stars. As an Iowa-class ship, it holds the distinction of being among the last American battleships to serve in World War II, the Korean War and the Cold War.

The Philadelphia Navy Yard dock, where the battleship is being repaired, is significant because it’s where the ship was originally built and launched in 1942, a year after the Pearl Harbor attack. The last time it entered to dry dock was in 1967 when it was reactivated for the Vietnam War, Szimanski said.

Decommissioned museum ships must undergo dry docking for maintenance every 20 years, according to Navy regulations. However, this is the first time in decades the Battleship New Jersey has undergone a major maintenance project, officials said.

When the vessel was first tugged away last month to make its way to Paulsboro for the first step of its repair journey, the sendoff was witnessed by hundreds on the Camden waterfront. The event may have been the the last opportunity for veterans who had served on the decorated ship to see it move again. Many watched again a few days later when the ship was towed from Paulsboro to Philadelphia to enter dry dock.

Judging by the response the museum has had from the dry dock tours, the excitement won’t be dying down anytime soon, said Jones.

“I don’t think it’ll die down until we’re very comfortably back in Camden,” she said.

What are the benefits of owning vs. renting?

Owning a home can help you build equity, offers tax deductions and fixed monthly payments, and gives you a sense of permanence. When you rent, your lease sets the price, your place isn’t really yours, and there are no tax benefits or financial freedom. There are many benefits to owning a home that you can’t get with renting.
