About Eric Church

Eric Church’s most recent critically acclaimed and chart-topping project, his  Heart & Soul  triple album, is available everywhere now. Featuring the results of a marathon session during which he spent nearly a month writing and recording a song per day while sequestered in rural North Carolina, the trio features his latest Gold-certified No. 1 “Hell of a View” and recent Top 5 hit “Heart On Fire” as well as his latest single, “Doing Life With Me,” climbing the charts at Country radio now.

Just as unique as Church’s approach to recording and releasing music is his tenacity on the road. His latest outing, the 55-city  The Gather Again Tour ,   offered fans an in-the-round show and earned the  Billboard  Music Award for Top Country Tour. Church also performed one-of-a-kind headlining stadium shows at Milwaukee’s American Family Field and Minneapolis’s U.S. Bank Stadium in 2022 and took the field at Tampa Bay’s Raymond James Stadium to perform the National Anthem with R&B star Jazmine Sullivan ahead of Super Bowl LV in 2021. During 2019’s  Double Down Tour  he played back-to-back nights of two unique shows in each market sans opening act, giving every city’s fans six-plus hours of his iconic music. The tour also featured a massive stop at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, where he broke the venue’s concert attendance record with more than 56,000 fans in attendance and became the first artist to sell out the venue with a solo lineup.

A seven-time ACM Award winner, four-time CMA Award winner (including the 2020 award for Entertainer of the Year) and 10-time GRAMMY nominee, Church has amassed a passionate fanbase around the globe known as the Church Choir as well as a critically acclaimed catalog of music. His previous project, the Gold-certified  Desperate Man , earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Album (his third nod in the category). Prior releases include the Platinum-certified  Sinners Like Me  (“How ’Bout You,” “Guys Like Me”) , Carolina  (“Smoke a Little Smoke,” “Love Your Love the Most”) and  Mr. Misunderstood  (“Record Year,” “Round Here Buzz”), the Double-Platinum certified  The Outsiders  (“Like a Wrecking Ball,” “Talladega”) and the 3x Platinum-certified  Chief  (“Springsteen,” “Drink In My Hand”) ,  as well as 30 Gold, Platinum and multi-Platinum certified singles.

Eric Church on Tour Openers Koe Wetzel, Shane Smith: ‘That Was Me 20 Years Ago’

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

Since his 2019 Double Down Tour , Eric Church has upended the traditional country music live show, doing away with opening acts and choosing instead to carry the night himself by delivering three-hour concerts split into two sets. But for this year’s Outsiders Revival Tour , he was inspired by his own playlist to curate a diverse group of legends, buzz artists, and up-and-comers to join him on the road.

The result touches on all styles under the country umbrella. There’s the hard-nosed Southern rock of Whiskey Myers , the Celtic-influenced red dirt of Shane Smith & the Saints, the Midwest vibes of Hailey Whitters , the genre-hopping of Koe Wetzel, and the twangy yet mainstream country of Lainey Wilson. Other artists on the tour include Jelly Roll, Red Clay Strays, Midland, and Ray Wylie Hubbard.

Church, whose against-the-grain career is the focus of a new exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, also saw some of himself in the openers he chose.

“Shane Smith was saying, ‘We’ve thought about quitting for a while.’ And I said, ‘Listen, this happens to everybody. You guys are good. You should keep doing it. And I’m glad you’re here. I’m glad you played in front of the people you did,’” Church says. “That was me 20 years ago.”

Church isn’t just introducing his live crowds to the bands he likes. Since last November, he’s also been programming his own SiriusXM channel called Outsiders Radio . It’s a wildly eclectic playlist: On Friday morning, songs by Greta Van Fleet, Whitney Houston, Paul Simon, Steve Earle, and Church himself all played in succession. A yellow legal pad of artists and songs that’s currently on display in the Country Music Hall of Fame exhibit illustrates how he came up with the station’s aesthetic.

“It’s out of my phone, alphabetical,” he says. “That whole [legal pad], you can flip a page and there’s another page, and another page. I told [SiriusXM], ‘These are the songs and you guys can expand, but make this your compass.’”

Earlier this week, Church also talked to Rolling Stone about his CMA Fest headlining performance, which reinvented past hits and skipped others altogether, leaving some fans unhappy .

“I was shocked because I played the show that I went out there to play,” he said. “We had a timeslot and I went out there to play that slot and try to show a little bit, a peek, as to what I was working on for this tour. I’m not going to [reveal] everything, but I’m going to give a little peek of what this could be.”

Eric Church’s The Outsiders Revival Tour at Pine Knob Amphitheatre

outsiders revival tour

Independence Township,Michigan (June 23,2023)- Eric Church throughout his career has been the standard for live performances in country music. In fact, he has been compared by many as being the Bruce Springsteen of the genre with his lengthy performances that often have segued into the early morning hours of the following day. Friday night at the Pine Knob Music Theatre there was no three hour music marathon but something new and invigorating from the man fondly known as “Chief” that should take his long time concert fans about three songs to adjust to.

Near the outset of the two-hour and 15-minute concert ,his ever first performance ever at the amphitheater and second stop of his The Outsiders Revival Tour, Church promised “this is gonna be a little different tonight, but it’s gonna be…badass” and to maybe spoil it a bit, he wasn’t wrong.  The idea was that the guy who for years has primarily toured in arenas and presented three-hour plus, multi night-long epic performances could trim things down for a more intimate outdoor amphitheater settings while adhering to local noise ordinances to have a cleared stage by 11 p.m., usually about the time in his set the arena based concerts have really started to take off. But remember this is Eric Church, the O.G. Outsider…a guy that does things his way…and also a previous CMA Entertainer of the Year that traditionally has played until HE says he is done.

The Outsiders Revival Tour is a hybrid concept for both Church and his fans alike. Some long standing followers are sure to be disappointed by the shortened show length, but what this country Icon has done is develop a setlist that keeps fans glued to their seat for two plus hours of pure Eric Church at his finest, but with a twist. Sometimes a little less turns out to be a whole lot more and that creed held true Friday night with Church. While he can never be accused of not giving fans what they want, his arena performances have sometimes been legendary to a fault. Although supported by a sturdy repertoire from his eight albums, some arena mainstays were notably absent Friday such as “These Boot’s” and “Record Year.” Both time consuming and long during his arena shows, there was no place in tonights affair for an extended band strumming and autograph session which in the past has encompassed 20 plus minutes. Reining it in on Friday, even if he went up against a costly curfew, Church and his 12-piece band were more immediate and impactful, almost playing with a sense of urgency with plethora of surprises that added vibrancy and freshness to Church’s familiar sound.

outsiders revival tour

As mentioned the expanded 12-piece band itself is a new endeavor and serious game changer that takes the sonic experience to a whole new level. Church threw out the status quo by augmenting his usual touring band with three backup singers and a three-piece horn section. The expanded stage presence brought new textures and flavors to many of the 25 songs, from the rhythmic arrangement of the opener “Chattanooga Lucy” to the funky soil take on “Bad Mother Trucker,” a jazz infused revue style play-through of “Hangin’ Around” and a Zydeco/Caribbean vibe to “Drink in My Hand.” But Church didn’t forget his roots and held fast to tradition with a more pronounced,  contemporary feel to Friday’s rendition of “Country Music Jesus,” while “Give Me Back My Hometown” started quietly and built into the  muscular anthem it is before settling back down for its conclusion.

As has become a Church tradition when he plays the Motor City, he paid tribute to Bob Seger during a story he reminisced , reminding the standing crowd how the Detroit rock icon stepped in  2006 after Rascal Flatts removed Church from their tour as an opener. “I would not be here at all if it weren’t for Bob Seger,”  Church proclaimed, who ironically or smartly planned was wearing a Bob Seger T-shirt. “The next phone call we got was Bob Seger, and it went something to the effect of, ‘You can’t open for them, but you can open for me,’ so that’s what we did,” and the rest, as his storied career attests, is history. Church and then band then rolled through an epic eight-song, 12-minute medley of Seger that he and the band put together for, as he told the story, “A one time only and never to be performed again..,” of scintillating covers of “Turn the Page,” “Like a Rock,” “Roll Me Away,” “Mainstreet,” “Get Out of Denver,” “You’ll Accomp’ny Me,” “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” and finishing up with “Night Moves.”

Other highlights of the night included a guest duet with opening act Ashley McBryde during “Mixed Drinks About Feelings,” a cover of Little Feat’s “Sailin’ Shoes” and an extended performance of “Pledge Allegiance to the Hag,” performed in front of a large American flag and giving most of the horn section, most notably a particularly animated, trombonist Roy Agee, room to stretch out at stage front that had the staunchest old school Eric Church fans dancing in the aisles .

outsiders revival tour

There were plenty of other Church favorites throughout the night that fans could hang their hat from, including “Mr. Misunderstood,” “Heart Like a Wheel,” “Homeboy,” “Smoke a Little Smoke” and an acoustic version “Springsteen,” that featured a solo Church, under a lone spot light laying it all out in front of 15000 swaying fans.

Nearing the end of his main set Church told the long sold-out Pine Knob Amphitheatre crowd, many still dripping from the day’s rain that finally stopped by the time he hit the stage around 9:05 p.m., that “There’s a certain time we’re supposed to get done — but I’m not gonna do that. Apologies to the local community here.” In typical Church style, then played until about 11:15, adding favorites such as “Talladega” which ultimately was requested my a young fan holding a sign near the stage and which Church acknowledged by pointing at the fan and announcing that “We weren’t going to play this tonight but this for you,” along with a mesmerizing   acoustic performances of “Holdin’ My Own” and “Sinners Like Me,” post-curfew and incurring Independance Township’s (in)famous $1,000-per-minute overtime fine.

Friday was only the second stop of The Outsiders Revival Tour and the fans on hand got a glimpse into an artist thats never satisfied and always strives to give his fans what they want plus more. Sure, he will be chastised for trimming his 3 1/2-hour performances  to a more manageable time frame by fans and nay-sayers alike. Sometimes less is more and what Eric Church has done is eliminated the fat and created a lean two-hour performance that is every bit as good and dare say better than what we have seen in the past. Its a new and welcomed chapter in the career of the country legend and for that we say well done Mr. Church, well done.

New experiences are the order of the day today for the chief.

Eric Church has announced a 27-date tour that will not only see him play outdoor amphitheaters for the first time, but also plan a tour for the Summer for the first time also. Starting on June 22 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the tour will finish up on September 30 in Tampa, Florida.

Announcing on social media, the chief stated, "We have never done an outdoor summer tour. Never headlined amphitheaters. Never brought a summer experience to your town that featured artists we want to share the summer with.

Until now. See you in the season of sunshine with some fellow outsiders that shine brightest when the sun goes down".

The aforementioned 'outsiders' that Church is speaking of are the wealth of support acts that will be joining him for the shows.

This is the first time Church is bringing a support act out with him since the Outsiders Tour in 2014, having instead taken to playing wild, hours-long sets himself over the last few years.

Whiskey Myers , Cody Jinks , Jelly Roll, Ashley McBryde, Koe Wetzel and Lainey Wilson will all join the chief for a set of dates, as well as Midland , Parker McCollum , Travis Tritt, Elle King, Paul Cauthen, Jackson Dean and Morgan Wade.

To close up the wealth of acts, Muscadine Bloodline, Shane Smith & The Saints, Hailey Whitters , Ray Wylie Hubbard & The Red Clay Strays will also play select dates.

Around a week after the initial announcement, Eric Church announced an extra date at Orange Beach, Alabama on August 17.

Along with the other two Orange Beach shows, this will be supported by Jackson Dean and Bell Bottom Country star, Lainey Wilson.

Due to the unsurprisingly immense popularity of the tour, Eric Church has also added a couple of extra dates in George, WA, with Jelly Roll and Hailey Whitters, along with six new shows in Charleston, SC; Toronto, ON; Rogers, AR; Saratoga, NY; Atlanta, GA; and Charlotte, NC.

Looks Like Eric Church Is About To Announce The ‘Outsiders Revival Tour’ Featuring Whiskey Myers, Cody Jinks, Lainey Wilson & More

outsiders revival tour

Could this be our answer?

Over the past few days, Eric Church has been posting a few teaser videos, featuring a number of big names in mainstream country music right now.

On Sunday, he released one with Jelly Roll’s “Son of a Sinner,” Ashley McBryde’s “Bonfire at Tina’s,” Cody Jinks’ “Must Be the Whiskey,” and his own hit “Springsteen.”

pic.twitter.com/EmaIotVHGv — Eric Church (@ericchurch) January 8, 2023

Yesterday, he shared another teaser, featuring Lainey Wilson’s “Heart Like A Truck,” Travis Tritt’s “It’s A Great Day to Be Alive,” and what sounds like a part of Whiskey Myers’ “Stone,” and ending with Church’s “Heart On Fire.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Eric Church (@ericchurchmusic)

And today, he shared yet another, kicking off with Parker McCollum’s “Pretty Heart,” and what sounds like a piece of one of his latest singles, “Handle On You.” The video closes out with a clip of Church saying:

“I still remember my first amphitheater concert. I was 16-years-old.”

The ending of today’s video had people wondering if there was a Red Rocks residency in the works, or at some other notable amphitheater in America.

Previously, there were several theories being thrown out there, as some thought it may be a promotion for Church’s new Sirius XM radio station, Outsiders Radio, and was simply listing all of the new artists who will be featured on the station. Also, the radio static in each video could’ve been a giveaway.

Another theory was that it was some kind of news about the opening of his new Nashville bar, Chief’s, but considering it’s still under big time renovations, that theory was incredibly unlikely.

However, we may have just found the key piece of evidence to figure out what in the damn hell Chief has been teasing…

A local radio ad for Fort Lauderdale’s Tortuga Music Festival may have spilled the beans a day early revealing that Chief will be on something called the The Outsiders Revival Tour this summer.

@ericchurch is on The Outsiders Revival Tour this summer, but we want to send you to see him at the @festivaltortuga ! Listen for the keyword for your chance to win! #tortugamusicfestival #doinglifewithme pic.twitter.com/VJTldzSEZx — KIX96 (@Kix96Savannah) January 10, 2023

Of course, the original Outsiders World Tour occurred in 2014, following the release of his 4th career studio album,  The Outsiders.

However, after quite a few years of running solo, playing 3-hour sets all on his own, it looks like Chief is finally getting back to having some openers on his upcoming summer tour.

A twitter user named Matt Wallen is out here doing the Lord’s work, and managed to dig up Eric Church’s unreleased 2023 tour schedule featuring the likes of Cody Jinks, Whiskey Myers, Ashley McBryde, Parker McCollum, Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll, Travis Tritt and more… all the artists we heard in the clips.

It doesn’t look to be a full set of dates, but we know the tour should at the very least feature amphitheater dates beginning in April and running through September.

From what we see on the list, there is still no date at Red Rocks, but an addition could always be made in the near future.

Stay tuned for the official announcement… tomorrow!

Eric Church’s Outsiders Revival Tour: A Triumphant Return to the Stage and a Testament to Timeless Country Music.

September 29th, 2023

After nearly a decade away from outdoor touring, Eric Church made a triumphant return, determined to prove his worthiness of the Billboard Music Award for the Top Country Tour. Launching his Summer 2023 journey, The Outsiders Revival Tour , he kicked off at the Tortuga Music Festival in Fort Lauderdale Beach Park back in April. Fast forward to the final stretch of his tour, and he chose to dedicate the last two nights to the state of Florida once again. On Friday, Church effortlessly sold out iThink’s 20,000-seat amphitheater in West Palm Beach.

Taking the stage promptly at 7:30, Whiskey Myers , hailing from Palestine, Texas, immediately captivated the audience with their electrifying Southern rock and country vibes. Their performance was so charged with energy that it seemed like everyone in the venue, from the seats to the lawn section, was up on their feet, caught in the infectious rhythm. The band, consisting of members Cody Cannon, John Jeffers, Cody Tate, Jeff Hogg, Tony Kent, and Jamey Gleaves, showcased their undeniable talent. Having accompanied Eric Church on multiple shows throughout the tour, Whiskey Myers proved their worth. Their eleven-song set, brimming with contagious vigor, resonated with the crowd, ensuring their songs found a permanent spot on the playlists of anyone who heard them.

At 9:30 the amphitheater lights began to pulsate, and the anticipation was unmatched. A few moments later a silhouette of a man with his guitar emerged from the smoke. Taking a strong stance in center stage, the crowd heard the first few notes of two of Church’s biggest hits, “Chattanooga Lucy” and “Bad Mothertrucker.” After these songs and throughout the remainder of the concert, Eric Church took the time between songs to be open with the crowd and speak about his journey as a musician. He even threw it back to one of the first songs he ever did on tour, “How bout You” from his Sinners Like Me album released in 2006. He worked through over twenty songs from his extensive repertoire and the crowd matched his energy throughout each and every one. After playing some of his biggest hits, “Round Here Buzz,”   “Heart on Fire,”   “Drink in My Hand,”   “Record Year”  and “Hell of a View,” the crowd remained on their feet chanting for an encore. Church graciously obliged, delivering two more songs, including his chart-topping hit, “Springsteen,” before concluding the enchanting 23-song setlist.

The talent showcased by his band was unparalleled. His band consisted of brass, guitar, ukulele, percussion, keyboard, backup singers and even bongos. Throughout the multiple brass and guitar solos, Church truly showed his respect of talent and admiration for the hard work his band has put in with him on this tour. You could tell how much this tour meant to him and he was not afraid to be vulnerable and share his love to the crowd. The ending of this tour solidifies the notion in every country music lover’s heart, that Eric Church is here to stay, and his music will be shared for generations to come.

The outsiders revival tour - phoenix, az 9.16.23.

By Adam Lucas

PHOENIX—There were no shortage of entertainment opportunities in Phoenix this weekend.

Cirque du Soleil was at the Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix, putting on four shows over the course of Saturday and Sunday. Right next door at Chase Field, the Arizona Diamondbacks hosted the Chicago Cubs in a three-game weekend series, and the two teams played an epic 13-inning game on Saturday night. On Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals host the New York Giants.

The high Saturday was also 105 degrees, and it’s been as high as 113 degrees this week, so a suitable form of entertainment would also be sitting inside and cherishing the air conditioning.

But even with all the choices, even with all the diversity of options, there was nothing that compared to the scene 12 miles outside of downtown at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheater.

The sellout crowd of 20,000 that shoehorned into the venue received four hours of one of the most entertaining and memorable evenings so far of the Outsiders Revival Tour. It began with Paul Cauthen, who somehow blends the sound of Johnny Cash with the dance moves of an eastern Texas Michael Jackson. Don’t ask questions. If you were there, you (maybe) get it.

Then there was Jelly Roll, who outsmarted everyone by performing in shorts on the scorching night. “Tonight,” he told the crowd, “we are going to celebrate the year of the underdog.”

Backstage, Church and his crew were preparing to match the energy level. Tour masseuse Mustang Sally and drummer Craig Wright exchanged their traditional pre-show chest bump. “It’s tradition,” Sally said simply.

Around 8:55 p.m., keys player Billy Justineau wandered into the production office in search of a set list. It was five minutes before Church is typically slated to take the stage. “Just wanted to see if there are any surprises,” Justineau said.

That one simple comment perfectly summarized why the Outsiders Revival Tour has been a must-see event everywhere it has gone this summer. Justineau is actually on the stage every night. He’s rehearsed, he’s sound checked, he’s performed. And yet, five minutes before he takes the stage, he has no concrete idea of what Eric Church is about to do.

So why wouldn’t every ticket sold come with a sense of anticipation? That’s why 20,000 people braved the temperatures to sit outside and experience it together. That’s why with all the options available to him in the Phoenix area, the most decorated Olympian in the history of sports, Michael Phelps, chose to be at the concert (you can thank him for “Talladega” being on the set list).

Where else would a savvy person be? By the time Church took the stage—tweaking the opener to go with the lesser-used “Country Music Jesus” in the first position—everyone in attendance had already had a memorable night. It was up to him to take it all the way to unforgettable. There are absolutely people making big money singing songs who would be petrified to put either Cauthen or Jelly—for a variety of reasons—in their show. It’s understandable for a less confident artist. You’re actively risking fans going home talking more about the support acts than the headliner.

No problem. Church had them both on the same bill.

“We don’t get out to Phoenix as much as I would like,” he told the crowd. “And we’re going to make up for that tonight.”

He brought back “Damn Rock & Roll” for a second straight night, and it seemed to fit the mood of the evening perfectly. He also brought Jelly Roll back on stage to duet on “Homeboy.” By the time that one was finished, Church just shrugged at the crowd.

“Now what?” he said. It was a fair question. There are other artists who would have been left bare in front of 20,000 people after that type of collaboration. Not Church. He just went right into “Smoke a Little Smoke” and then followed it with “Give Me Back My Hometown,” and the night—which might have been teetering on the rails under a less steady hand—was back under his control again.

That’s who he is, and that’s why people buy tickets every night. During “Round Here Buzz,” it’s typical for him to tweak the line after “I’ve never had big city eyes” to include a reference to the local area. Sometimes it’s a challenge. After all, you try to rhyme something with Orange Beach.

But Saturday night flowed perfectly:

“I never had big city eyes, I’m just trying to get back to Arizona.

“And you can bet your desert ass we’re going to put it on ya.”

That’s the kind of night it was. “Paul and Jelly,” Church said, “are weird like me.” Perhaps so. But there’s only one ringmaster capable of mixing them all together quite this way.

Cauthen was sitting in the front of house area when Church and Jelly Roll were singing “Homeboy.”

“This is a special night,” Cauthen said, listening. “This doesn’t happen everywhere every night.”

It happened here on this night for one reason. We’ll leave it to the poet laureate of Phoenix, Mr. Jelly Roll himself, to explain it. As he walked off the stage following the duet, he looked back at the crowd. He gestured to the headliner, and in one magical phrase managed to perfectly describe why the Outsiders Revival continues to be something unpredictable every single night.

“The living legend himself,” he roared. “Eric Fuckin’ Church!”
