Pacific Eden

The 1,500-passenger Pacific Eden, previously Statendam under Holland America Line, is now part of the P&O Australia fleet. It features the upmarket food court dining concept, The Pantry, to replace the traditional buffet dining. Pacific Eden is the first ship from P&O Australia to depart from tropical North Queensland (Cairns) and to have an overseas homeport (Singapore). Pacific Eden offers trips to Papua New Guinea, and voyages extending to the Solomon Islands. The Singapore departures have port calls in nearby Asian countries such as Indonesia, Thailand and Cambodia.

[fa type=”bed”] Accommodation

Pacific Eden has 630 cabins categorised according to spaciousness, living area and bathroom facilities. All cabins are outfitted with either two beds that can convert into a queen bed or two lower and two upper (bunk) beds. The main beds in the suites and penthouse convert into king-sized beds. There is personally controlled air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, wardrobe, desk with chair, safety deposit box, hair dryer, phone and Wi-Fi. Shelves and drawers for storage are plentiful in both main room and bathroom. Other than the bigger space, a walk-in wardrobe and a bathtub, extra perks for suite guests include priority check-in and disembarkation, a welcome aboard gift such as a fruit basket, complimentary laundry service, a Nespresso coffee machine, iPod music system, in-room dining (afternoon tea and canapes delivered on request) and free bottled water and soft drinks in the fridge. To accommodate bigger groups and families, 52 of the cabins can be interconnected.

[fa type=”cutlery”] Food

Pacific Eden has wide options for free dining. Waterfron Restaurant, the ship’s main dining room, is open from 7am to 9am for breakfast (7.30-9.30am on sea days), noon to 1.30pm for lunch (sea days), and 5pm to 9pm for dinner. Seating is open so no booking is required, unless guests request for an early matinee dinner at 5pm. The Pantry is a casual dining area that houses eight different outlets, from Mexican, Indian and Asian to salad bars and desserts. Other dining options indclude the pan-Asian specialty Dragon Lady restaurant and the sophisticated Angelo’s. At a fee, guests can try Blue Room, Salt Grill by Luke Mangan or the intimately unique dining experience at Chef’s Table. Room service is available 24 hours a day.

[fa type=”ticket”] Activities

Elemis at Sea on deck 11 offers a range of facials, massages, wraps and salon services using the brand’s high-end products. It also has treatments that claim to offer detoxifying and slimming effects. The thermal suite has five heated benches, warm air, aromatic steams, saunas and powerful monsoon showers. For a full cruise pass, the cost ranges from $149 to $299 per couple or $99 to $179 per person, depending on the length of the cruise. Located at the front of the ship, the fitness centre has an excellent ocean view from floor-to-ceiling windows. It has treadmills, exercise bikes and strengthening equipment, as well as complimentary fitness classes. Guests can also take classes like Pilates, yoga or indoor cycling for about $13 a class or hire a personal training for $97 an hour.

[fa type=”group”] Families

Pacific Eden has a lot of amenities to cater to both kids and parents. Children and teenagers are divided into age groups – each assigned to a designated area with age-appropriate activities. Teenagers are split into two groups, 11-14 year olds and 15-17 year olds. Both HQ (for younger teens) and HQ+, are decked with video game consoles and movies. Another activity kids can get themselves into is the Broadshorts program, a great initiative that teaches them to make a short film using Stop Motion Pro technology.

Great included and specialty dining options and entertainment make this ship ideal for families and groups looking for a fun-filled cruise.

We have spent a lot of time raving about our cruise to Papau New Guinea and a lot of that has focused on what an incredible destination PNG was to experience.

  • Why We Loved our Papua New Guinea Cruise
  • PNG Cruise Ports and Tips

This was our first cruise as a family and as soon as the cruise ended, we were trying to plan our next.  That tells you how much we enjoyed the week we spent on the P&O ship Pacific Eden .  We were so impressed with the ship, the service, the quality of the food and entertainment aboard and how family-friendly the ship was.    As independent travelers cruising wasn’t on my radar and I didn’t expect to enjoy cruising as much as we did.  I am so glad we gave it a chance though as it was an awesome holiday. Cruising is a great way to blend exploration with relaxation as you explore exotic ports of call, but are also pampered in luxury.

Embarkation

Our sailing was out of Cairns in Queensland.  They have a lovely cruise port area with parks and lookouts by the ocean.  They have to get a lot of people on a ship in a few hours, so I wasn’t sure how this would go.  Luckily, embarkation went really smoothly and we were on the ship in less then an hour.

We were given an embarkation time slot online and while there were some queues when we arrived, they moved quickly.  Come prepared with your cabin luggage tags printed out and attached to your suitcases.  Also make sure that all your cruise paperwork is filled out ahead of time.  We had to complete a health form, a PNG form and have our passports and e-tickets ready.

After leaving our bags we checked in and received our cruise cards.  Having a lanyard to attach your cruise card to is essential.  I tried to be cool and not wear one the first day, but it really is so practical.  We were given lanyards from our cruise agent, Cruise About.  You can buy them aboard or bring your own.  Next up was Australian immigration, then an embarkation photo and on we went.

All excited to get on the ship!

First Impressions

Once on the ship, I was impressed with the modern Australian décor.  We had cruised before and I remember glitzy, over-the-top interiors.  I much prefered the muted Aussie styling with sophisticated restaurants, comfy lounge seating around the pool and a very modern feel.

Immediately upon boarding, you want to use your first hour to do some important planning that will benefit you throughout the cruise.  First, you want to make reservations for the specialty restaurants (Angelo’s, Dragon Lady, Salt ($) and Captain’s Table($)) and the Waterfront dining room.  You are welcome to make as many reservations as you want.  By the end of the first evening, there was very little availability at these restaurants, so it pays to get it organized first thing.

We also went up to the Kids Club so that the kids could get oriented there and we needed to complete the paperwork for each child.  Our next stop was visiting the P&O Edge office to buy gold passes for the kids and sign them up for their first activities the following day.

Pacific Eden

Lots of different areas of the ship to explore

Our Staterooms

Our bags were waiting for us outside of our staterooms.  We had two outside rooms side by side on the 5 th floor.  The rooms on Pacific Eden are known to be a nice size and we found the rooms really functional.  We had a triple room and a twin room.  The triple room had two twin beds with one bunk over one of them.  Although Pacific Eden in an older ship, we found the rooms to be in really good shape.  There was some rust on the shower faucet, but other then that it was perfect.

Pacific Eden stateroom

Our triple or quad stateroom on Pacific Eden

Our rooms also had a sofa, which was great to have.  The bathrooms featured a full tub/shower and was very spacious.  Our room stewards Viddy and Edy were very sweet and took the time to get to know our names.  The kids were delighted with the towel animals that they found in their rooms each evening.

The kids loved seeing the towel animals that awaited us each evening.

Pacific Eden P&O

Each night we would look at what was happening the next day.

Each evening the P&O Goodtimes newsletter for the next day and kids club schedules were left in our cabin.  It is incredible how many activities there are to do on the ship and if you are like me, a highlighter is very helpful to make sure you don’t miss the things you want to do.  My more high tech husband liked using the Whats On app, where he could see the activities, menus, etc on his phone (doesn’t require internet).

Family of 5 plus

I know many larger families aren’t sure how cruising can work for them and I had the same concerns before we booked our cruise as well.  P&O staterooms can only accommodate four people in a cabin, making it a challenge for families of 5 or 6.  P&O also requires that an adult 18+ sleeps in each room, making the possibility of a kids room out of the question.

Here is the best way for larger families to book cruise accommodation:

  • Book early and grab the interconnected cabins. These go quickly, but are the best bets for families.
  • If you can’t get interconnected cabins, select cabins side-by-side. One parent will still have to sleep in each stateroom, but you will conveniently be located together.
  • If you are on a real budget or booking last minute, you can select the guaranteed cabins where P&O will assign you a stateroom before the sailing. This could mean that your cabins are on different floors.  This is what we originally had booked because we were trying to keep costs down.  Our plan was to put the kids to sleep in one cabin, hang out together in that cabin and then one of us would just go to the other cabin to sleep.  What we didn’t count on was the late evenings we would have and so we usually went to sleep at the same time as the kids.  Therefore, while having cabins apart may not be completely ideal, it is possible and the most economical.

Cruises are known for their food and there are lots of options aboard the Pacific Eden.  You can eat at the Pantry (casual food stations), the Waterfront main dining room, the specialty restaurants, the poolside grill and café and ice cream shop.  P&O does offer room service, but at an additional cost.

There are times throughout the day where you will have to pay for food (from 3-5:30pm and after 9pm).  If you are cruising with kids, they have a Kids Dinner in the Pantry at 4:15 each day, which was great for the kids to grab a snack after a port day.   You can get proper coffees at the poolside ice cream shop ($3.50-5/coffees, $5-7.50/ice creams).  The poolside grill serves hot dogs, nachos and pizza ($5-10).

The Pantry is P&O’s revolutionized buffet and is definitely a step up from the cruise ship buffets of old.  The Pantry features a number of food stations from contemporary Australian cuisine, to Indian thalis to Mexican tacos.  The specials at each of the stations change daily and there are lots of options available.

where to eat Pacific Eden

Desserts at the Pantry

A staff member serves you your food, eliminating the risk of guest contamination and then you find a seat.  We did find it was sometimes difficult to get a table for our family of 5.  While the food was good in the Pantry, we preferred the sit-down restaurants where we found the food and service better.  We also found we ate less when we were eating at table service restaurants.

A thali from the Pantry.

The Waterfront

This is where we ate most of our meals as we preferred the table service.  It is open for breakfast and dinner and lunch on port days.  The first night of the cruise we booked reservations most nights for dinner.

They do have a kids menu, but our kids really enjoyed ordering off the main menu, which rotated daily.  We are vegetarian and there was always one veg choice and one fish/seafood choice. We found the food to be really good and enjoyed our meals there.

The kids really enjoyed selecting their meals.

Waterfront Pacific Eden

Loved eating at the Waterfront most nights.

Dragon Lady

The Asian specialty restaurant on the Pacific Eden has a really cozy and modern ambiance.  We found the food to be good, although our service was only okay here.  Although we loved the Waterfront, it was nice to try somewhere different.

Dragon Lady

Really nice ambiance at Dragon Lady

specialty dining P&O

A curry at Dragon Lady

This is the Italian restaurant and the ship and it didn’t have many vegetarian options. The food was good, but this was probably our least favorite of the specialty restaurants.  You definitely want to make your reservations for the whole cruise on the first evening as they get entirely booked out.

Salt Grill by Luke Mangan

We had read the hype about this premium restaurant with a $49pp surcharge and it definitely lived up to it.  The quality of the food and level of service was impeccable and it was definitely one of the highlights of the trip.  You can order a starter, main and dessert each, along with a few sides.  My vegetarian husband treated himself to a beautiful steak while I had the ahi tuna, which was really great.  Everything we ordered was suburb and it is definitely worth treating yourself to a meal at Salt Grill.

They are only open for dinner and high tea on sea day, but reservations are essential.

Salt Grill P&O

Our best meal of the cruise at Salt Grill.

Salt Grill cruise

Beautifully plated and delicious!

This was our first ever experience with a kids club and it was something the kids were really looking forward to.  P&O’s Kids Club is divided into four categories: Turtle Cove for 2-6 year olds, Shark Shack for 7-10 year olds, HQ for 11-14 year olds and HQ+ for older teens.

One of the things I was really impressed with is the flexibility of the Kids Club.  Our 10 year old daughter really wanted to be in the HQ area and I was expecting the age groups to be hard cut offs.  In fact, they will allow you to move them up or down one year so you can choose the group that is best for your child.  Likewise, our youngest  at 6 is a very independent kid who was much happier to be in Shark Shack with his brother then in the Turtle Cove little kid group.

Every day there was a great schedule of activities for the kids to participate in and our kids were eager to go to Kids Club every day once we returned to the ship.  This schedule was delivered to our stateroom the evening prior so the kids could check what activities they wanted to participate in.  They did crafts, played basketball on the outdoor courts, completed scavenger hunts and had dance parties in the evening.

At the end of the cruise, there was a kids’ performance and it was so neat to see the friendships that had formed.  We used the opportunity a few nights to go out for a date night dinner, which was such a treat.

P&O with kids

End of cruise performance from the kids club.

Kids in HQ and above can sign themselves in and out, but Turtle Cove and Shark Shack require an adult to sign them in and out.  There was only one instance on the cruise when the kids club was at capacity, but we came back 30 minutes later and our kids were able to sign in.  It was great to give the kids so much independence on the ship to meet their new friends and grab their own snacks.

We loved the full-day availability of kids club on P&O.  For Turtle Cove and Shark Shack they opened at 9 am and didn’t close until 10:30pm.  HQ and HQ+ didn’t close until 1am, but there were breaks for lunch and dinner.  We found the kids club staff to be really friendly and it was obvious our kids loved going there each day.

Since the kids loved kids club so much, it gave us an opportunity to have dinner dates and spend time together.  I love spending time with my kids on vacation, but it was nice to have both family time and couple time.

cruising with kids

Happy kids!

P&O Edge

The P&O Edge Adventure Park on the Pacific Eden was another thing our kids were super excited about.  Each ship offers up to 19 adventure activities ranging from ziplines to high ropes courses, to laser tag, to segways.

P&O cruise

A really great features for kids and adults it the Edge Adventure Park.

The best way to experience the Edge activities is to buy a VIP Pass where you can do all of the activities on the ship for one price.  We bought the Gold VIP Pass which allowed them to do all of the activities.  It worked out to two activities on sea days and one on port days.  If you buy your pass online in advance or on the first day, you will receive a discount.

Adults are more than welcome to participate and I did secretly want to try the Walk the Plank activity.  But which did our kids enjoy the most?

Ella: Walk the Plank because it was scary, but fun.

P&O Edge

Walk the Plank

Gavin: Segways.  I really liked driving them and it was cool to drive on top of a cruise ship.

Miles: Bungee Tramp.  It felt so bouncy and so fun.

P&O Edge

The bungee tramp was a hit.

We were really impressed with the staff running the activities and the quality of equipment.  The staff are specially trained and safety is definitely their number one priority.

The one thing we did find tricky was getting booked into the Edge activities each day.  You can only sign up one day in advance and often by the time we got to them, there were very few spots open.  This is definitely an area I think they could streamline to make it easier for guests.

Entertainment

The entertainment was something we only caught on to mid-way through our trip as we discovered all the great bands and entertainers that were on board.  We loved listening to The Beats on the pool deck or the acoustic duo in a lounge.  We also went to a few of the performances in the large Marquee, which were really impressive shows especially Sideshow Alley.  The kids loved the magician the one night and our daughter really enjoyed the dance show.  The final party on the last evening was really fun with all of the entertainers involved and a champagne toast.

There is also a cinema on board, but we didn’t have time to check that out.

Since the islands of Papua New Guinea are so remote, 3 out of the 4 ports we visited were tendered ports.  It was only in Alotau that we were docked.

For the most part the tenders ran really smoothly.  In our first port of Kitava, there was a large swell making embarking and disembarking really slow and it took a few hours to get everyone off the ship.  The best recommendation is to disembark earlier (from 8:15 am) as the peak demand is 9:30-11:30 am.  You go to the Marquee to get a tender time slot and then you wait there until your time before heading down to the tender area.

We did have VIP tender passes given to us by P&O, which allowed us to go right down to the boarding area.  P&O sometimes offers promotions if you book early that include VIP tender passes; it is a huge benefit, so look out for that!

cruise tendering

Tendering to get ashore Kitava

Shore Excursions

We didn’t do any of the ship’s shore excursions and were able to organize activities once we were onshore.  You can read our full post on our PNG cruise ports and tips .

Kiriwina by cruise

Touring the villages of Kiriwina Island, PNG.

Overall, we found the service on the ship to be good.  Our stateroom stewards were extremely friendly and personable.  Since the ship uses an anytime dining format, you don’t really get to know the restaurant staff that well.  We found some restaurant staff really cheery and attentive and others not so much.  There were a couple of times where we had to wait a really long time to place our orders in the restaurants and then once we were really rushed through our meal.

P&O Australia operates with tips included in your cruise fare (love this!) and I do think this does affect service slightly.  We did tip our room stewards, but it would have been hard to tip others since we didn’t consistently have the same staff.

Pools and Common Areas

On the Pacific Eden, there are two pools.  The first is on the deck 11, with two Jacuzzis.  The Pacific Eden has a retractable roof, which is great for rainy or cool days.  The lounge chairs are really new and plush and there is quite a bit of shaded area, which of course is in high demand.  There are also conversational seating areas with super comfy pillows on this deck.  On our first sea day, the seas were really rough and the pool was sloshing around quite a bit.  I have seen other cruise lines that have closed the pools when it is like this, but P&O kept them open, much to my children’s delight.

Pacific Eden pool

The main pool on the Pacific Eden

The other pool is on deck 10 at the rear and is the adult’s only area.  There isn’t a lot of shaded area near this pool, but it is a beautiful and quiet spot to relax.

Pacific Eden P&O

Pacific Eden Adult’s Only Pool

We really appreciated the modern décor of the common areas on the Pacific Eden.  There were lots of lounge and bar areas throughout the ship, each with a different feel.  Although the ship is an older ship, the common areas were in excellent shape due to its 2017 refit.

While I love the idea of being unplugged on holiday, it just isn’t a reality for us.  We both purchased the Platinum Unlimited package at $99/per cruise.  My husband was able to use the WIFI for work and even went back to the ship one day to make a skype call.  Being satellite, there were times where it was extremely slow, but overall we were happy with the WIFI considering we were in the Pacific Ocean far, far from anywhere.

Motion and Sea Sickness

Since the Pacific Eden is a smaller ship, you are more likely to feel the motion of the seas.  On our first sea day it was rough and some people did feel sea sick.  I wouldn’t let this dissuade you from going on a cruise though, as there are lots of remedies to pack to assist with sea sickness.  The rest of our cruise we experienced calm waters and I loved going to sleep each night with the very slight gentle rock of the boat.

Disembarkation

Disembarkation took longer than embarkation since so many people had bought lots of woodcarvings requiring close inspection at Quarantine back in Australia.  Although they were very careful at inspecting the items, they were very lenient and we did not see anyone have anything taken away.  They did sometimes request that you put the item in the freezer at home or they did spray a few things.  It took us 75 minutes to disembark.

You are supposed to put your bags out between 5-8pm the night prior, but next time I would skip that and just bring our bags off ourselves.  You were given a time slot between 7:20-9:20 am.  Since we had a later spot, we enjoyed our last meal at the Waterfront.  I would give yourselves plenty of time on disembarkation day and book a flight later in the day.

Oceanview Pacific Eden review

We never got sick of this view!

  • All prices on the ship are in Australian dollars.
  • Tipping is included in the cruise fare.
  • Bring a lanyard or purchase one from the ship’s shop to keep your cruise card handy.

Pacific Eden photos

The photographers took great photos.

  • On our 7-night cruise, there were 3 theme nights which seemed a bit much (Gatsby, Bianco and Back to School). It really is optional to dress up and I would say it was less than 25% who were dressed according to theme.  Next time, I will look up online the theme nights and come prepared.
  • There is a spa and casino on the ship, but we didn’t participate in either.
  • You can purchase alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink packages. In fact if you book your cruise in advance, this is often thrown in as a promotion.
  • Watch out for the great duty-free prices. You cannot consume them on board, but they are worthwhile for bringing home.

We hope you found this P&O Pacific Eden review helpful.  If you have any questions, leave us a comment and we will get back to you.

Review: P&O Cruises Australia Pacific Eden

Posted: March 22, 2022

It’s easy to see why  P&O Cruises  Australia as a brand has remained at the forefront of discussions about cruisers, particularly when you’re on board one of their ships.

P&O Cruises Australia has continuously been one of the first cruise lines advancing with the times, reacting to the public criticism that cruise ships are often too tasteless in their effort to accommodate to the everyday Australian, out of touch with current needs and design.

The new additional Pacific Eden to me is a direct response to that. Pacific Eden formerly Statendam of the Holland America Line fleet.

I was lucky enough to grab a quick tour of Pacific Eden when it docked in Adelaide on Monday 21 st of March 2016, observing personally what a refurbishment stirred by modern Australia truly looked and felt like.

My first impression when I first laid eyes on her, was her significantly smaller size from the other P&O Cruises Australia ships. But once inside you are taken back from its deceptively small size.

Pacific Eden caters for about 1,500 guests and the number of child passengers has been capped at 10 per cent which will without a doubt impact the position of her in the market.

The ambiance throughout the ship was calming, the fixtures alluring you to bring your book, take the weight off your feet and relax as the bartender pours you your favourite cocktail.

The Pantry was a real eye-opener, because one of the first things that come to people’s mind in regards to cruising is – The Buffet!

The Pantry is still a buffet as far as the all-you-can-eat aspect, but it’s intended more in the direction of separate eateries. There’s the Mexican, the Indian, the Chinese, a Garden Bar with just salads, a sweets store with just desserts, and even a section devoted completely to meats and roast dinners ( Fat Cow ). I think it’s a smart move, and yet I wasn’t able to sample any of the food to give it any suitable kind of critique, the plan and idea is absolutely in line with a better-quality passenger experience.

The Pantry

The larger modifications are appreciated in the public features. Namely the transfer of the enclosed dining scene on board with the stylish  Waterfront Restaurant , a pan-Asian restaurant called  Dragon Lady  washed in neon mood lighting, a lively Italian restaurant called  Angelo’s , an intimate  Chef’s Table  experience, and ever popular  Salt Grill by Luke Mangan . While most are upbeat with fresh design, all restaurants have a distinguishing look and feel about them, especially Dragon Lady, which stands as the odd one out in terms of ambiance, edgy and clearly modelled off the more contemporary Japanese restaurants found across Australia.

chefs table

Both Angelo’s and Dragon Lady, only open for lunch and dinner, and disparate from P&O’s signature Salt Grill by Luke Mangan, are free of charge.

One of the most stirring additions include a Cellar Door experience on board, exclusively stocking wines from boutique Hunter Valley winery  Glandore Estate Wines . It’s adorned with oak barrels and rows and rows of wine bottles, with the choice for guests to have their favourite blends sent to one of the restaurants to pair up with lunch or dinner.

Glandore Estate Wines

There’s also a wonderful emphasis on entertainment, with the whole kit and caboodle from the onboard theatre to the chilled jazz bar,  The Blue Room . For the more overblown and dramatic, the lido deck plays host to regular Gatsby & Bianco parties. Those considering daytime that are  a bit more exciting will be pleased to know that Pacific Eden features P&O Cruises popular P&O Edge .

The first thing I noticed about each cabin was its considerable larger space compared to the other P&O ships.  The doorways regardless whether or not it was an accessible cabin equipped for a wheelchair, were wide enough for me to wheel through, which for me was a real breath of fresh air.

Penthouse

After my day onboard I was reluctant to disembark and stay on and enjoy a week at sea.  The Pacific Eden is definitely a cruise ship I recommend for anyone with mobility issues, and who love to cruise.

I really can’t wait to go on that ship. I am going on the pacific dawn next month, I like her she is comfortable. I will be looking forward to taking a cruise on Pacific Eden.

I’m on the Eden in November.. Didn’t know that it catered more to the older clientele.. Although it makes sense that the oldies are on their 20th+ cruise.. So looking for new destinations.. But Im really hoping that there are enough children to play with for my kids… And more of a mixed age group.. As we would like some company our own age !.. ( not knocking the olden goodies of course!)

We are looking forward to cruise on Pacific Eden next month after cruising on her former sister ship Maasdam last year which we found to excellent and enjoyed the “smaller” cruise ship atmosphere.

What cabin were you in that was accessible? We have noticed that most cabins have showers over high baths.

Does anybody have pics or videos of the Suites on board Pacific Eden please. Room 1034 would be great. Thanks

Please view the gallery for Pacific Eden I took last year.

I am going onboard her again this Friday for 10 nights.

Eden is First Port as P&O Cruises Australia Begins Series Celebrating Regional Destinations

P&O Cruises Australia today launched a special video series celebrating regional cruise destinations in Australia beginning with Eden on the Sapphire Coast of NSW.

The cruise line’s flagship Pacific Explorer was the first cruise ship to use Eden’s new wharf extension when it opened two years ago and its ships were regular callers.

P&O destinations director, Michael Mihajlov, said Eden was a natural starting point for the series celebrating regional cruise destinations.

“Our guests love Eden and the community there through organisations such as Cruise Eden has embraced cruising and the opportunities it delivers,” Mr Mihajlov said.

“With their enthusiasm they make each cruise ship visit an event in its own right adding unique local attractions such as the beachside Taste of Eden Festival.”

In the six years since the inaugural call, P&O ships have visited Eden on 25 separate occasions bringing around 50,000 guests to the region.

The Eden video is fronted by Cruise Eden Coordinator Debbie Meers.

More destination videos are planned for other destinations such as Airlie Beach in Queensland’s Whitsundays.

Airlie Beach is renowned among the cruising fraternity for the warm welcome provided by its enthusiastic volunteers.

“We know that regional destinations are very keen to see the restart of cruising and the revival of cruise ship calls as soon as it is possible,” Mr Mihajlov said. “And we can’t wait to return.”

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.

Chiloe Island cruise port

Region South America

Local Time 2024-04-12 13:33

Port Chiloe Island cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Chiloe Island, Castro, Chile. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Chile's Chiloe Island (officially Isla de Chiloe, aka "Greater Island of Chiloe"/Isla Grande de Chiloe) is the largest in Chile's Chiloe Archipelago (Pacific Ocean). Castro is the principal port and the capital city of Chile's Chiloe Province (Los Lagos Region) with population around 40,000. Castro City is on Chiloe Island's central-eastern coast, which location provides it with access to the Archipelago's eastern islands.

Isla de Chiloe has total area approx 8394 km2 (3241 mi2), ranking it Chile's 2nd largest island - after Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego . It is also South America's 4th-largest island - following Grande de Tierra del Fuego, Ilha de Marajo (Para Brazil), and Ilha do Bananal (Araguaia River, Tocantins Brazil).

As cruise port, Castro/Chiloe Island is often included in the seasonal Antarctic cruise schedule of Hurtigruten Expeditions . Itineraries usually include Puerto Natales , Puerto Eden , Chilean Fjords/Patagonia (coastal cruising), Cape Horn and Drake Passage , the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands , Punta Arenas (homeport, with flights to/from Valparaiso-Santiago ).

The island's population is around 155,000 people. In the northwestern part of the Island is the Chiloe National Park. It features a huge diversity of marine fauna, including sei whales, blue whales, Peale's amd Chilean dolphins, marine otters, sea lions, Humboldt and Magellanic penguins. Nevertheless, this comparatively undisturbed area faces plenty of threats, including habitat degradation, urban development, marine and land pollution.

Conducted by Cetacean Conservation Center, the blue whale project "Alfaguara project" is based at Punihuil - on the island's northwest coast. It combines long term capacity building, research and educational programs for marine conservation. Islotes de Punihuil Natural Monument is a group of 3 islets located to the north and west of Punihuil. The monument is the only shared breeding site for Magellanic and Humboldt penguins. It is also the breeding area for other species like kelp gulls and red-legged cormorants.
