How an ad-hoc group of 80 ukrainian drone operators defended kyiv using whatsapp.

War On The Rocks is one of the leading podcasts for in-depth English-language analysis of the Full-Scale Russian Invasion of Ukraine. Podcast hosts Micheal Kofman and Rob Lee recently released a free episode of an associated series of podcasts called The Russian Contingency .

In this episode, they discussed the explosive evolution of drones during the Ukrainian War. The drone war in Ukraine is as revolutionary as it is fascinating - this year Ukraine is hoping to train 20,000 drone operators (a comparative number to the active service personnel in the Canadian Army). But in the beginning, the drone war looked very very different.

How 80 Ukrainian drone enthusiasts helped save Kyiv

Rob Lee is a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute and was previously in the US Marine Corps. He is focused on Russia's defense policy (he is very active on X - formerly Twitter). Michael Kofman is a senior fellow in the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace where he focuses on the Russian and Ukrainian militaries. They both travel to Ukraine and gather information on the ground.

Kofman says the use of drones was very ad-hoc in the beginning, with soldiers connecting with drone operators via WhatsApp. Rob Lee calls it "wild improvisation." As the Russians fought their way to Kyiv, the internet was flooded with videos of Russian armored columns being ambushed and destroyed. The roads to Kyiv were soon strewn with column upon column of destroyed Russian armor. But much of the drone-supplied footage was not filmed by the Ukrainian army but by civilians flying their personal hobby drones.

Background: Russia decapitation strike on Kyiv

Many words can be used to describe both the Russian and Ukrainian militaries in the first days of the war, including chaos and confusion. This is when Russia attempted a lightning decapitation strike on the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv. However, the Ukrainians' stout, dogged, and often chaotic and ad-hoc defense defeated the Russian army and drove it back across the border within weeks. Bewildering stories continue to emerge from this battle - including how a group of drone enthusiasts used WhatsApp to provide critical intelligence to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The Russian losses in the campaign were mind-boggling, and many of their best units were left decimated. In the two years of fighting in Ukraine since losing the Battle of Kyiv, the Russians have only managed to make incremental gains in the east at best.

Drone enthusiasts and the defeat of the 6th tank regiment.

The drone enthusiasts were a group of around 80 Ukrainian civilians who mostly used DJI Mavericks drones. The Michael Kofman and Rob Lee podcast starts with a fascinating story of how drones were used in the first days and weeks of the Full-Scale Invasion and how these drones were used to improve artillery strikes against the Russian forces.

The podcast discusses the Battle of Brovary, when the Russian 6th Regiment of the elite 90th Guards Tank Division was engaged and driven back by the Ukrainian 72nd Mechanized Brigade with heavy losses. The wider battle raged for around three weeks between March 9 and April 1, 2022. In just two days, the Ukrainians claim to have destroyed a column of 80 vehicles. The Ukrainian forces were aided by civilian drone operators providing intel on the Russian dispositions and helping to correct Ukrainian fires. Speaking of the drone footage that emerged of the Battle of Brovary near Kyiv (linked below), they state in the podcast...

"...the whole thing is an interaction between someone who has a drone up, and has a feed. And guys [soldiers] on the ground that see this as a feed, and connect to him via WhatsApp and basically say, 'hey can we hop in on this with you.'" - Michael Kofman

"...I think it was 80 people in Kyiv who had their own UAVs that connected early in the war and they started sharing information, like on WhatsApp... and in this case, i think it was a civilian, who had a UAV up and was actively scanning for things and I think found the Russian 6th Tank Regiment in Brovary. I think he was the first to locate it and passed the information onto WhatsApp. They got in touch with an artillery commander from the 72nd Brigade and that's how that engagement happened." - Rob Lee

In the Battle of Brovary , Russian Colonel A. Zakharov was reported killed, and many tanks and other vehicles were destroyed. The battered Russians were forced to withdraw. Interfax-Ukraine reported the battle at the time.

How Many AWACS Aircraft Has Russia Lost In Ukraine?

In the first days of the war, the Turkish-built medium TB2 Bayraktar drones became an icon overnight. These were used with great effect in the first days and weeks against Russian forces destroying many important Russian assets. However, unstealthy and slow drones like these are obsolete on the modern battlefield. They were able to exploit a period of Russian air defense chaos, but once the Russians adapted, Michael Kofman states most were shot down within a few weeks. They have largely disappeared from the war since.

Both civilians on WhatsApp flying Maverick drones and the TB2 Bayraktar illustrate not only the importance of drones in this war but also just how fluid it is. The drone war of early 2022 looked nothing like the drone war of 2023 and 2024 is looking nothing like the drone war of 2023. It is evolving at break-neck speed, with numbers proliferating by orders of magnitude. Perhaps the strangest recent development was a propeller-driven Ukrainian Yak-52 dogfighting and gunning down Russian drones like it in 1945 .

General selling conditions

1. Any packages delivered by Pan Travel are based on the contract, signed by both parts. 2. The contract includes – detailed description of services (programme, accommodation, transportation, boarding etc.) – duration – number of participants – price – payment* – cancellation** * Pan Travel will deliver to the client a pro-forma invoice for the services specified by the contract. Once the payment has come through, Pan Travel will issue the final invoice.

Payment will be made by bank wire, as following: – a deposit of 30% within 7 days from the signature of the contract – the final payment must be completed at last 30 days before the date of the beginning of the trip. For last minute bookings (less than one month before the beginning of the rip), the payment must be done in one installment.

Payment can be made by credit card too.

** Notice of cancellation by the CLIENT must be made in all cases in writing signed by the person who signed the contract. Cancellation is effective from the date of receipt by the ORGANIZER of such notice. Pan Travel will refund the amount paid by the client, deducting the cancellation charges and the bank transfer fees. The CLIENT cannot cancel only part of the services included in a package.

CANCELLATION CHARGES

If the CLIENT cancels the trip, the following percentage of the total package price will be deducted as a cancellation charge: – more than 30 days before the departure date: 10% of total amount – 29 – 20 days: 25 % of total amount – 19 – 10 days: 50 % of total amount – 9 – 4 days: 80 % of total amount – less than 4 days or NO SHOW: 100% of total amount

If the CLIENT purchased a trip cancellation insurance, the insurance company will refund the cancellation charge based on the invoices delivered by the travel ORGANIZER.
