Step 1: Gather Documents Early

Generally, you should apply for your new passport as soon as you know you’ll be traveling internationally—at least several months in advance. Passport processing times may vary, so be sure to check the latest State Department service estimates . First-time applicants, minors, and applicants who need a new passport but may not renew by mail may submit their passport application at the Post Office. Step 2: Prepare Your Application Package

Visit the U.S. Department of State website to learn how to apply for a passport and what documents you need.

Complete your Form DS-11 Application for U.S. Passport on the State Department website.
Print your completed application. DO NOT SIGN YOUR APPLICATION. A Postal employee must witness your signature.
Have a passport photo taken.
Photocopy your proof of identity and U.S. Citizenship documents.
Post Offices accept credit cards, checks, and money orders for Post Office acceptance fees.
State Department fees are mailed with your application. You can pay with a personal, certified, cashier's, traveler's check, or money order, payable to "U.S. Department of State."

Step 3: Schedule an Appointment

Post Offices that offer passport services have set hours, and you'll need to schedule an appointment using the online Retail Customer Appointment Scheduler or a Post Office lobby self-service kiosk.

Scheduling Online

Go to Schedule an Appointment .
Choose the passport service you need, along with the number of adults and minors who need appointments.
You can search for appointment by location or date first. If you search by location first, you'll then be asked to choose a date and time; if you search by date first, you'll then need to choose a location and time.
After you choose your appointment location and time, provide your contact information, and agree to the Terms and Conditions.
Click Review Appointment , then confirm your appointment.

If you need to modify or cancel your appointment, click the Manage Appointments tab and enter your confirmation number and email address or phone number.

Using a Self-Service Kiosk

Go to a Post Office location with lobby self-service kiosks. Find USPS Locations
At the self-service kiosk, touch the screen to begin, then select "Other Services," then "Passport Scheduler."
Choose the passport service you need, then enter the number of adults and minors who need appointments.
Search for Post Office locations by ZIP Code™ or City/State and choose a location.
Select an available appointment date and time, then agree to the Terms and Conditions.
Enter your contact information and decide if you'd like to receive SMS text notifications.
Review and confirm your information, then select “Schedule Appointment” to finalize.
Take your printed receipt listing your confirmation number and appointment details.

Step 4: Pay Passport Acceptance & Processing Fees

First-time passport applications have two types of basic fees, the application acceptance fee and the application processing fee. Passport photos and fees for faster processing are extra. Learn how to calculate fees and what you can use to pay for them.

Application Acceptance Fees – Postal Service

Pay acceptance fees in person at the Post Office. You may pay by check or money order, payable to "Postmaster," debit card, or credit card.

Application Processing Fees – Department of State

State Department payment is sent with your application package. State Department fees are paid separately from USPS fees.

Application Status Updates

Use the Online Passport Status System to check your application status if you applied by mail or in person. You may not be able to get a status update for 2 weeks after you apply or renew. During these weeks, your application and supporting documents are on their way to the Department of State. Renew a Passport by Mail

If you are eligible to renew your passport, please complete Passport Renewal Application Form DS-82 (see completion instructions on the form), and mail your completed renewal application directly to the State Department for processing. To verify if your passport is eligible for renewal by mail, please visit State Department Renew By Mail .

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility to Renew by Mail

A minor's passport may not be renewed by mail; to renew a minor's passport, you need to submit a new, first-time passport application in person . An adult passport may be renewed by mail if it meets certain requirements.

You can renew your adult passport by mail if you answer "Yes" to all 5 of the following statements:

Your passport:

Is in your possession to submit with your application.
Is undamaged other than normal "wear and tear."
Was issued when you were age 16 or older.
Was issued within the last 15 years.
Was issued in your current name or you can document your name change. (Name changes are explained on Change a Passport .)

If your passport does not meet all these requirements, do not mail your renewal application. You must prepare the same application package as a first-time passport applicant.

State Department Renew by Mail

Apply early for renewals as many countries require that passports be valid for at least 6 months after you enter their country. Learn how to properly prepare your application package and include all the necessary documents so your passport is processed on time.

Complete your Passport Renewal Application Form DS-82 on the State Department website.
Print and sign your DS-82 form.
Have a passport photo taken. You can schedule a passport photo-only appointment at a Post Office ™ location.
Calculate your passport renewal fees .
Collect your most recent passport, completed and signed application, renewal fees, and name change documents, if needed.
Use an envelope large enough to fit the application without folding it.

Mobile Passport Control (MPC) allows eligible travelers to submit their travel document, photo, and customs declaration information through a free, secure app on their smartphone or other mobile device. The use of MPC streamlines the traveler’s entry process into the United States by reducing passport control inspection time and overall wait time. Use of MPC does not require pre-approval. Travelers who successfully use the MPC app will no longer have to complete a paper form and may be provided a designated queue. As a result, travelers may experience shorter wait times, less congestion and efficient processing.

The CBP Mobile Passport Control App

CBP’s MPC app is a free application that can be downloaded from the Apple App store and Google Play and is currently available for eligible travelers to use upon arrival at MPC approved sites . See FAQ question number 2 to see a complete list of current MPC Sites.

How does MPC Work?

After downloading the MPC Application from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, eligible travelers will be prompted to create a profile with their passport or LPR card information. Upon arrival at eligible Preclearance locations users must select their mode of entry in the application as "Preclearance" before selecting their departing Preclearance Port of Entry. If a traveler is not using preclearance, upon landing in the United States, travelers will select "U.S. airport" as their mode of entry and then select their arrival airport or seaport and terminal. Travelers will then take a self-photo and answer a series of CBP inspection-related questions. Once the traveler submits their transaction through the app, travelers will then bring their physical passport to a CBP officer to finalize their inspection for entry into the United States.

Cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity is required to send information, but travelers may complete profile(s) without being connected to the internet.

Where can eligible travelers use MPC?

CBP uses the Mobile Passport Control (MPC) application to streamline the processing of eligible travelers entering the United States. Eligible travelers with a smartphone or tablet may voluntarily download the Mobile Passport Control (MPC)-enabled mobile application (app) from a mobile application store (e.g., Apple App Store or Google Play Store).

The MPC mobile app, is available to U.S. citizens, U.S. lawful permanent residents, Canadian B1/B2 citizen visitors and returning Visa Waiver Program travelers with approved ESTA. MPC is currently available at the following 50 sites, including 33 U.S. International Airports, 13 Preclearance locations, and 4 seaports of entry:

What are the benefits of using MPC?

MPC provides a more efficient in-person inspection between the CBP officer and the traveler. Since the administrative tasks are performed by the traveler prior to the passport control inspection, MPC reduces passport control inspection time and overall wait times.

When will I be able to submit my information to CBP through an MPC app?

Travelers should submit their information upon arrival at the port of entry, including preclearance locations.

Does MPC replace my passport?

No, travelers must present a valid U.S. Passport, U.S. lawful permanent resident card, Canadian passport or a Visa Waiver Program passport to a CBP officer upon arrival.

Will I still have to go through the processing lines if I use MPC?

Yes, travelers will still be processed by a CBP officer. Travelers using MPC will be directed to a specific processing lane for a streamlined entry process.

Do travelers still have to fill out a declaration form?

No. Travelers will answer CBP inspection-related questions electronically via their smartphone or tablet. If a traveler has already filled out a CBP declaration form, it can be turned in to a CBP Officer.

Can families use MPC?

Yes, up to 12 profiles can be created for family members. All authorized MPC apps allow for a single household to submit one MPC transaction, including answers to CBP inspection-related questions.

Is using MPC secure?

Yes, the traveler’s document information and answers to CBP inspection-related questions are submitted directly to CBP via secure encryption protocols. The information you enter on the authorized applications are securely transmitted to CBP which sends a response to the apps, generating the electronic receipt you may display when entering the MPC queue. The authorized apps provide the option to store your profile on your smartphone or tablet for future travel or deleting it after your trip. Please note that the photo taken on the application will need to be updated periodically. CBP recommends travelers review the application’s privacy policy prior to download and use. Only information entered after the traveler acknowledges CBP’s notices (i.e., CBP’s mobile privacy policy, Section 311 of the Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015, Disclaimer Statement and the Paperwork Reduction Act Notice) is required to be compliant with CBP’s MPC business requirements.

What happens if my flight is diverted to a different airport?

Travelers will not be able to use MPC if their flight is diverted to a U.S. airport that does not utilize MPC processing. Upon arrival at the diverted airport, travelers will follow standard processing procedures. If you were processed by a CBP officer in Preclearance, you would land as a domestic passenger and can proceed to your destination or connecting flight.

How long do passports last?

When to renew your passport, the best time to renew a passport, how to renew a passport, when to renew your passport recapped.

Do you have any upcoming international travel? Has it been a few years since you last left the country? If so, it’s time to break out your passport and check when it expires. If it’s past due — or close to expiring — now’s the time to renew.

Here's a look at how long passports last, when you need to renew your passport and how to do so.

How long ago did you get your U.S. passport? Its validity will differ depending on your age when you applied.

If you were under 16 when your passport was issued, it’s valid for five years.

If you were 16 or older when your passport was issued, it’s valid for 10 years.

Although it can be annoying to renew a passport every five years, it makes sense. After all, a 1-year-old child is going to look much different when they're 6.

There are a few different occasions when you may need to update your passport.

1. If it’s expired

The first and most obvious reason you’ll want to renew your passport is that it has expired. If you’re younger, this may be just a few years after it’s been issued. If you’re older, it may have been quite a long time since you’ve needed to renew.

If you’re traveling, you’ll want to research the regulations to see if your destination has any validity requirements. For example, to travel in Europe, your passport needs to have at least six months of validity left before you depart. This is true whether you’re traveling for two days or two months.

Not researching this beforehand could result in denied boarding.

2. If it's expiring soon

Travel resources like USA.gov and the U.S. Department of State recommend that travelers with a passport expiring soon should consider renewing it early , especially if they have upcoming international travel.

This is because certain countries, including Vietnam, Thailand, China and Brazil, among others, require six months of validity on a passport before allowing entry.

3. If it’s damaged

Have you ever accidentally left your passport in the pocket of your jacket, then washed and dried it? No? Just us?

Although passports do experience normal wear and tear, if your passport becomes significantly damaged, it’ll need to be replaced.

This is especially true if the book cover is damaged; since 2007 all U.S. passports have included an integrated chip that details your information. This allows you to go through electronic passport gates and skip the long lines at immigration.

4. If it’s full

This is a good problem to have, but if your passport is completely full, it’s time to replace it. After all, how are you supposed to get new stamps if there’s nowhere to place them?

Again, do your research on your destination before attempting to use a passport that’s nearly full. Some countries use visas that’ll take up an entire page, and others will require that you have two to four blank pages in order to enter.

If you do end up filling up your passport before it’s meant to expire, you may want to apply for an extended passport. The standard passport book is 28 pages. An extended passport will give you 52 pages.

You might be wondering, “Should I renew my passport before it expires?” According to the U.S. government, the best time to renew a passport is nine months before it expires. This gives you time to complete all your paperwork, mail it in and receive your new passport before the old one expires.

And you should move fast, because processing times are especially long lately. Even if you pay the additional $60 per application for expedited processing, expect it to take several weeks.

That's all due to record demand for passport renewals. During some weeks during the winter of 2022 and 2023, the State Department said it received more than 500,000 applications. Not only did that exceed projections, but that marks the highest number ever for that time of year.

The State Department also says 2023 set the record for the highest demand year ever. Currently posted processing timelines are as follows:

Routine processing: Six to eight weeks.

Expedited processing: Two to three weeks.

What if my passport already expired?

It’s also possible to renew a passport after it’s expired, without necessarily starting from scratch in getting a brand new passport (in most cases).

If the passport was issued less than 15 years ago, you can still use your expired passport to apply for a renewal. To do so, you’ll need to fill out the DS-82 form.

Though, this policy does not apply if your passport was issued before your 16th birthday, if your passport was damaged, lost or stolen, or if your passport was issued in a different name and you don’t have a legal document proving your name change.

In these cases, you’ll instead need to apply for a new passport using the DS-11 form.

There are a few different ways to renew a passport. The U.S. government has been trying a new method for online applications that is significantly easier than applying by mail.

In order to do so, you’ll want to navigate to the online renewal website . From there, you can register for an account and begin your application.

Renewing online isn’t available to everybody. In order to be eligible, you must meet a specific set of requirements. This includes:

Being older than 25.

Having a passport that is at least nine years old but no older than 15 years.

You’re applying for a tourist passport.

You aren’t changing your information.

Your current passport is immediately canceled as soon as you submit your online renewal application.

If you don’t fall within these categories, you may have to go about renewing the old-school way. This includes mailing in your paperwork, a new passport photo and a completed renewal application.

Finally, if you have imminent travel and have just realized that your passport won’t cut the mustard, it’s possible to obtain a new passport quickly. Standard processing times takes several weeks, but if you’re traveling within the next 14 days you can make an appointment at a passport agency instead.

Guide to the 6-month passport rule — what is it?

It may sound trivial, but one of the best rules you can follow as an international traveler is to remember to check your passport validity before you book flights and hotels.

Why? Because the requirements for entry differ from country to country. In the midst of planning my 2024 travel, I realized my U.S. passport expires in April, which could mess with my plans abroad.

Thankfully, I use a travel checklist to avoid disruptions to my travel itinerary.

I immediately started the passport renewal process online and had my photo taken at my local Walgreens — although you can DIY your passport photo if you prefer — so I could send out my application as quickly as possible. I also opted to expedite the processing time for an additional $60 fee and sent my application on its way.

Many European countries are signers of the Schengen Agreement . As a result, they follow the 3+3 Rule, meaning your passport must be valid for three months beyond your three-month entry visa or for a total of six months, regardless of the duration of your initial stay.

While some Schengen countries only require passports to be valid for three months beyond your intended stay, others assume you may stay the full 90 days of your visa validity — thus the six-month time period.

The signers of the Schengen Agreement are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Bulgaria and Romania will join the group March 31, 2024.

How to Get an Emergency Passport Renewal in 72-Hours or Less

Emergency passport renewals are only available to travelers with a documented life-or-death emergency that requires urgent international travel within the next 24-72 hours. This express passport renewal option can be used to renew an expired passport or one that does not meet the validity requirement for the country you need to visit.

Some reasons your passport may not be valid include:

Your passport expired - You cannot travel abroad with an expired passport .
Your passport expiration date is too soon - Different countries have different rules about how much validity your passport needs to have. Some countries simply require your passport to be valid for the duration of your stay. Some countries require three or six months of remaining validity on your passport.
Your passport does not have enough remaining visa pages - You cannot add pages to a passport . As such, it's important to know how many blank passport pages countries require . This includes both countries you are traveling to and through.

In situations like these, you only have two ways to get your travel document quickly. You can either submit your application at a regional agency or you can request emergency passport renewal through an authorized expediting service .

In some circumstances, it is possible to get a passport renewal in 24 hours. However, processing delays can extend the wait time for an emergency passport to up to 3 business days.

Be Sure You Qualify for Emergency Passport Renewal

Be advised: you can only renew a passport if you meet the following criteria:

You still physically have your most recent passport . In addition to the passport application, fees, and supporting documents, you need to submit your previous passport when applying to renew it. This means a lost or stolen passport cannot be renewed.
Your last passport was issued within the past 15 years . U.S. passports are valid for 10 years. So, even if your passport is no longer valid, it can still be renewed as long as the expiration date is less than 5 years ago.
Your passport is not extremely damaged . The US Department of State will not accept excessively torn, burnt, mutilated, or water damaged passports for renewal.
You want to renew an adult passport book or passport card . A child's passport book or card does not qualify for emergency passport renewal. That said, there are expedited passport services for getting a child's passport quickly .

If your existing passport doesn't meet the requirements above, it is still possible to get emergency passport service. You need to follow this guide to getting a new passport in an emergency ; the instructions outlined below are only for an urgent passport renewal.

The Department of State approves emergency passport applications for new and first time passports as long as you can provide sufficient proof of your urgent travel needs. If you do not have proof of urgent travel plans, there are several other methods of US passport renewal that you should explore instead.

Again, be aware that getting a same-day or one-day passport renewal is typically only available to those who have sufficent proof of a life-or-death emergency.

What Qualifies as a Life or Death Emergency for Urgent Passport Service?

Per the U.S. Department of State website:

To qualify for life-or-death emergency service, your immediate family member must be a parent, legal guardian, child, spouse, sibling, or grandparent.

To be clear, other relatives such as aunts, uncles, cousins do not qualify for life-or-death emergency service. Furthermore, simply visiting another country for medical treatments or medication doesn't qualify, either.

Note : You will need to supply sufficient proof to the Department of State to qualify for this level of expedited service.

The process remains the same as getting an emergency passport renewal for urgent travel, with the exception being how you make the appointment.

Emergency Passport Renewal at a Regional Agency

If you choose to attempt an emergency passport renewal on your own, know that there is no room for error. Even a simple mistake can delay your international travel.

There are three steps that must must happen in order for you to renew a US passport at a regional processing center.

Depending on the time of year and the passport agency you call, it may require several attempts to finally reach a representative.

A walk in appointment is possible, but it is a big risk-especially if you have an emergency. Calling to make an appointment ahead of time is a better choice.

Completed Form DS-82 - This is the standard U.S. passport application document for renewing an adult passport.
Your most recent passport - Again, passports must have been issued within the past 15 years and be relatively undamaged (normal wear and tear is acceptable).
One passport photo - Passport photos must be taken within the last 6 months and follow the passport photo size and content guidelines issued by the Department of State.

When applying in person at a passport office, you can pay your passport fees with cash (exact amount only), check, money order, or most credit or debit cards (including most pre-paid cards).

Name change documentation - If your name has been legally changed since you got your previous passport, you also need submit an official document to support this.
Evidence of travel - Most, regional agencies require evidence of travel if you are applying for emergency passport services. This is the only way you can get the fastest processing time.

Emergency Renewals through an Expedited Passport Courier Service

Applicants who do not want to take the time to make an appointment or who are unable to travel to the nearest regional agency, can authorize a registered expediter to submit the US passport renewal application form on their behalf. For some people, this is the fastest, and most cost-effective way to get emergency passports . It also reduces the risk of errors or delays.

For Starters, What Is An Enhanced License, And Where Can You Get One?

Enhanced Driver's Licenses, or EDLs, can only be obtained in five US states.

An Enhanced Driver's License, EDL for short, can only be obtained in five states : Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington. These are all states that border another country (Canada). Therefore, an EDL can be used at border crossings. However, an EDL also permits travel in other countries, as well, and not just those that share borders with the U.S. So, what is this magical card all about, then?

To obtain an EDL, drivers must go to the DMV and apply for one. The cost of an enhanced license will vary based on the state, but there's always an extra fee to pay for having a license that also doubles as a means for travel identification. The ID will have a visible differentiation between what it is vs. a regular driver's license, which is to keep people from replicating them or counterfeiting an EDL. It also might take slightly longer to get an EDL in the mail since, while it is a driver's license, it does vary from the typical license.

EDLs are extended licenses allowing a person to travel between states and certain countries. They will have a different look than a standard license and should be permissible at border checks, state lines, and traffic stops. People can use them to get in and out of Mexico and Canada, which is helpful.

The benefit of having one of these is the fact that travelers can use it to get into both Canada and Mexico, and it can be shown at both border crossings as a form of legitimate identification for entry. An EDL can also be used in the event that a traveler is going to the Caribbean, which is helpful in the event that someone doesn't have a passport or doesn't have time to obtain one (always check territory restrictions before booking trips).

So, it could be said that an EDL is great for use in 'local' international travel. However, this doesn't mean that it's always a substitute for a passport. Additionally, since the EDL is not available in every state, it means that more than half of the country does not have access to such a form of identification. So, there are still downsides to this, and it does not grant travelers access across all international borders, nor does it replace a passport when boarding a plane to another country. Temporary EDLs also are not accepted at border crossings, so, similar to a passport, travelers will be required to wait until they've received the formal copy of their license before using it for travel purposes.

Enhanced ID Versus REAL ID: Which Is Better?

Enhanced Driver's Licenses are used without passports, while REAL IDs are not.
Obtaining a REAL ID is good for airports and secondary identification when entering or leaving the United States.

On top of an EDL, there is also something called a REAL ID. These work similarly, allowing government agencies to distinguish who's a US citizen versus a foreigner. With a REAL ID, the card will have a specialty stamp of citizenship, which can be used at airports, borders, etc. However, these aren't considered better than Enhanced Driver's Licenses, as they can't get people in and out of countries without a passport.

According to the Department of Homeland Security , a REAL ID is a nationwide effort to improve the integrity and security of State-issued driver's licenses and ID cards. They essentially offer a second layer of trust and protection to you and the ID in question, so this could be an alternative to look into. People still need a passport to enter the country with a REAL ID, so that's one downside. Domestically, it's not required to have both. They're also about $30 cheaper than EDLs.

If someone travels domestically often, a REAL ID is a good investment. They're cheaper than Enhanced Driver's Licenses but need a passport with them at international entry and exit points.

Is A Passport Better Than An Extended Driver's License?

Those who don't have access to Extended Driver's Licenses can apply for passports.

For people who don't live in states where EDLs are available, obviously, it makes sense to get a passport. EDLs are much cheaper, but for those on a budget who are looking to do that 'local' international travel, a passport card might be something to look into. For those who do live in EDL states, it's a worthy thing to have, even if they're not planning on crossing international borders anytime soon. For a fee that's not extraordinary, it won't break the budget to splurge for the extra $30 or so license.

Anyone who does live in a state where an EDL is an option but is planning on traveling to a country that's not Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean should absolutely invest in a passport. Simply put, EDL does not grant access to any other countries and will likely never be used for such purposes. It's easier to think of the EDL as a special privilege granted to certain states that share borders with other countries - it won't grant access to the world, but it will allow country-to-country crossings. A passport is a long-term investment that, in the long run, will permit travel practically anywhere and will last longer than an enhanced license.

Getting A Passport Just Got Easier

The United States is (finally) making it easier to apply for passports. Starting in 2023, Americans will be able to apply for their passport renewals online (but not for their first passports - that takes longer ). This will help make the whole process much simpler. It could be better as the new system will still lag behind the speed and convenience of other countries like New Zealand (which have been renewing passports online for many years).

The standard fee for renewing a passport will be $130.00, and it will be valid for 10 years. It will take 7 to 10 weeks to receive one's passport - although this can be expedited for an extra fee.

Over the border in Canada, the Canadians have been at work simplifying the renewals of their passport too.

The question should not be an either/or debate about whether one should get a passport or an EDL. Instead, one should have both - especially if one lives near the borders with Canada or Mexico. That way, one can spontaneously decide to cross the border (one may not always be carrying a passport around). Most people should just invest in having both. TSA at JFK International Airport now using credential authentication technology to improve checkpoint screening capabilities

NEW YORK — New technology that confirms the validity of a traveler’s identification (ID) and confirms their flight information in real time is now in use at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoints at JFK International Airport.

This deployment is the latest generation of Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) to verify the identity of travelers. First generation CAT units are designed to scan a traveler’s photo identification, confirm the traveler’s identity as well as their flight details. The new CAT units, referred to as CAT-2, have the same capabilities, but are also equipped with a camera that captures a real-time photo of the traveler.

CAT-2 compares the traveler’s photo on the ID against the in-person, real-time photo. Once the CAT-2 confirms the match, a TSA officer verifies and the traveler can proceed through the checkpoint, without ever exchanging a boarding pass. The photo is then deleted.

The CAT-2 units are equipped with cameras on tablets and are used to match the face of the person standing at the checkpoint with the face that appears on the traveler’s ID such as the person’s driver’s license or passport. The technology enhances detection capabilities for identifying fraudulent documents at the security checkpoint. The photos are not saved and are only used to match the person standing at the travel document checking podium with the photo on the ID that is being presented.

“Identity verification of every traveler prior to flying is a key step in the security screening process,” said John Essig, TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport. “This technology enhances detection capabilities for identifying fraudulent IDs such as driver’s licenses and passports at a checkpoint and it increases efficiency by automatically verifying a passenger’s identification. We just want to ensure that you are who you say you are.”

As an additional feature, the unit is touchless meaning that the passengers insert their ID and do not have to hand it to a TSA officer. Thus the units reduce touchpoints and speed the process. Travelers insert their ID, look at the camera and if the ID is validated, the traveler then proceeds into the checkpoint. Even with TSA’s use of these units, travelers still need to check-in with their airline in advance and bring their boarding pass to their gate to show the airline representative before boarding their flight.

“This latest technology helps ensure that we know who is boarding flights,” Essig said. “Credential authentication plays an important role in passenger identity verification. It improves a TSA officer’s ability to validate a traveler’s photo identification while also identifying any inconsistencies associated with fraudulent travel documents.”

The system also confirms the passenger’s flight status by verifying that the individual is ticketed to fly out of an airport on that same day.

CAT-2 units have what is referred to as a “library” of IDs programed into them that allow the technology to authenticate more than 2,500 different types of IDs including passports, military common access cards, Department of Homeland Security Trusted Traveler ID cards, uniformed services ID cards, permanent resident cards, U.S. visas and driver’s licenses and photo IDs issued by state motor vehicle departments.

Photos captured by CAT-2 units are never stored or used for any other purpose than immediate identity verification. Travelers who do not wish to participate in the facial matching process can opt out in favor of an alternative identity verification process.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Over the past 100 years of shuttling people around the globe in metal flying machines, the world's aviation network has grown into a vast web of intersecting routes that connect nearly every corner of the globe.

Because of the complexities of crossing international borders, commercial carriers follow what is known as the "freedoms of the air" — or the right for an airline to operate within a nation other than its own.

These building blocks of aviation make international connectivity possible.

According to the International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO , there are five official freedoms and four other "so-called" rights, that have been outlined in agreements between countries. ICAO is an agency of the United Nations that sets standards for the global aviation industry.

Drafted in 1944 during what is known as the Chicago Convention, the laws were written as world governments relaxed their grip on airline networks and pricing. This liberalization, however, meant countries with bigger airlines would likely dominate the skies — prompting them to implement strict route regulations.

The governing freedoms not only promote more competition and choice but also allow airlines to optimize routes and increase efficiency, according to FlightRadar24 .

Most international carriers except for a very small few follow the basic freedoms of allowing airlines of one state to fly over or land in another, and vice versa.

Open Skies agreements simplify these international routes, like the one between the European Union and the US that allows any airline registered in either market to fly between the two.

Some freedoms are more complicated, but provide interesting and diverse route options to travelers.

Beyond the first four freedoms, there is one more officially recognized right, as well as the four "so-called" rights. The latter four were not officially drafted during the 1944 Chicago Convention but are regularly accepted and practiced worldwide.

According to ICAO, the fifth freedom gives an airline of one nation the right to fly between two other countries, so long as the one-stop routes start or end in its home country and all parties agree.

Among the most well-known fifth freedom routes are Emirates' flights from New York-JFK to Milan and Newark to Athens, both flying onward to the carrier's base in Dubai.

Similarly, Singapore Airlines flies between New York and Singapore via a stop in Frankfurt , and Australian flag carrier Qantas flies between Sydney and New York via Auckland, New Zealand, according to Google Flights.

United Airlines' delayed fifth freedom route will fly between the US mainland and Cebu, Philippines, via Tokyo starting in October, the carrier told Business Insider on Monday. It was supposed to start in July — before the FAA launched an investigation after a string of safety incidents at United.

These unique routes can be efficient for airlines trying to serve destinations that a plane can't reach nonstop, like Emirates' fifth freedom between Mexico City and Dubai via Barcelona or Latam Airlines' route between Sydney and Santiago, Chile, via Auckland.

Still, carriers will make stops on otherwise attainable direct flights because they can capitalize on the high-demand market on both legs — filling more seats and making more money.

Customers may also view carriers like Emirates and Singapore as a more luxe offering than the competing US and EU carriers across the Atlantic.

On the other hand, an airline that wants to serve a low-demand market can better fill the plane by adding a fifth-freedom leg to a nearby city, like Dutch flag carrier KLM's flight between Amsterdam and Santiago via Buenos Aires.

Among ICAO's most interesting "so-called" rights is the eighth freedom, which gives an airline the right to fly between two cities in a country that isn't its own— but the domestic leg seats cannot be sold as the entire journey must start or end in the foreign airline's home nation.

"Five Freedom Agreements"

First Freedom

This allows an airline of one nation to fly over another without landing.

Second Freedom

This allows an airline of one nation the right to land in another territory for a technical stop. Think refueling or an inflight mechanical issue that prompted an unplanned emergency landing.

Third Freedom

This allows an airline of one nation to carry passengers to a foreign state, and vice versa.

Fourth Freedom

This allows the airline of one nation to take on passengers originating in another. The fourth freedom is simply the reverse of the third freedom.

Fifth Freedom

This allows an airline of one nation to carry passengers between two countries other than its own so long as the route starts or ends in the carrier's home state.

"So-called" rights

Six Freedom

This allows an airline to carry passengers from one nation to another via its home state. This represents the typical hub-and-spoke network used by global airlines.

Seventh Freedom

The seventh freedom is similar to the fifth freedom but takes out the limitation of where the route must start or end. Instead, an airline has the right to fly between two nations other than its own without flying onward to its home base.

The EU's single-aviation market, for example, grants airlines the right to fly to and from any EU country, like Ireland-based Ryanair that flies between Rome and Vilnius, Lithuania.

Eighth Freedom

This allows an airline to fly between two cities in a foreign country so long as all passengers originate or are destined for the airline's home state.

Ninth Freedom

This cabotage freedom allows an airline of one nation to fly between two points in a separate single country. This does not exist in the US, but it does in the EU — like easyJet's back-and-forth nonstop between Paris and Nice, for example.

Several countries including the United States have issued new travel guidelines for Israel and the surrounding region, as the Israeli military said its forces were “highly alert” for a possible Iranian strike in retaliation for the killings of several commanders.

Iran has repeatedly vowed to strike back at Israel over the bombing of an Iranian Embassy complex in Damascus, Syria, this month that killed three generals and four other military officers. An American official said on Friday that Washington expects an attack by Iran against Israel that would be bigger than recent attacks in the long shadow war between the two countries, but not so big that it would draw the United States into war. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The U.S. State Department on Thursday barred its employees from traveling to large parts of Israel, the first time the U.S. government had restricted the movement of its employees in this way since the war in Gaza began more than six months ago.

On Thursday, Britain told its citizens that they “should consider leaving” Israel and the Palestinian territories “if it is safe to do so.” On Friday, India told its citizens “not to travel to Iran or Israel till further notice,” while France advised people not to travel to Israel, Iran or Lebanon and evacuated the families of French diplomats from Iran.

Asked about the U.S. travel warning , Matthew Miller, the State Department spokesman, said at a news briefing Thursday: “We have seen Iran making public threats against Israel in the past few days.” He declined to provide details about any specific information that prompted the warning.

The new guidelines bar U.S. government employees and their families from traveling to locations outside the Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Beersheba metropolitan areas “out of an abundance of caution” until further notice. The State Department said U.S. personnel could move among those areas for personal travel.

The top American military commander for the Middle East, Gen. Michael E. Kurilla, traveled to Israel to coordinate a response to possible Iranian retaliation, U.S. officials said.

“Our enemies think that they will divide Israel and the United States,” the Israeli defense minister, Yoav Gallant, said in a statement on Friday after meeting with General Kurilla. “They are connecting us and are strengthening the relationship between us.”

If Iran attacks, he added, “we will know how to respond.”

On Thursday, the Israeli military’s chief spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said that the armed forces were “highly alert and prepared” for any action Iran might take, even as the timing and scale of any response remained unclear. Analysts say that Tehran, which has long used a network of proxy forces to project power across the Middle East, wants to avoid igniting a full-fledged war that could drag in the United States and threaten the survival of Iran’s regime.

“For years, and even more so during the war, Iran has been financing, directing and arming its proxies — in Lebanon, Gaza, Syria, Iraq and Yemen — to attack the state of Israel,” he said. “An attack from Iranian territory would be clear evidence of Iran’s intentions to escalate the Middle East and stop hiding behind the proxies.”

Cost of UK passports to rise for second time in 14 months to up to £100

Fee rises by 7% to £88.50 for adult online application, while applying by post will cost £100

The cost of a new or renewed UK passport is going up again for the second time in 14 months – rising by 7% to £88.50 for an adult online application from Thursday.

Thursday’s rise follows a 9% price hike to £82.50 in February last year. Before that increase, passport fees had not changed for five years and a standard adult online application cost £75.50, or £13 cheaper than this week’s new price.

Children’s passports will also cost more from Thursday, going up from £53.50 to £57.50 for an online application.

For those applying for the travel documents via a paper form sent in by post, there is an even greater increase, from £93 to £100 for an adult passport and £64 to £69 for a child. Passports are free for people born on or before 2 September 1929.

Which? said the increases may come as a shock to people due to renew these documents. Guy Hobbs, a travel expert at the group, told consumers on Wednesday that if they needed to renew their passport “today is your last opportunity to beat the price hikes”.

Hobbs said: “While these latest price rises may well reflect rising production or processing costs, the UK passport is now amongst the priciest in Europe – and travellers due to renew will likely be shocked by how much these little blue books now cost.

“Travellers should also be aware that from mid-2025 they will need to pay for an Etias [The European Travel Information and Authorisation System] to enter Europe.”

Etias, which is modelled on the US Esta scheme, means non-EU travellers will have to fill in a form and pay €7 (£6) before entering Europe’s passport-free zone. The fee will apply to everyone aged between 18 and 70 and is valid for multiple visits over three years. In most cases, approval is expected to be granted within minutes.

Delays caused by the pandemic meant that 360,000 customers had to wait more than 10 weeks to get their passports in the first nine months of 2022, according to the National Audit Office.

Passengers travelling to Europe are also being warned to watch out for changes that mean their passport could also be invalid even when it appears to be in date. Before Brexit, UK passport holders could travel in and out of the EU if they held a valid passport, even one that expired the day after their return.

However, now UK passport holders travelling to any EU country (except Ireland), plus the others in the Schengen area, could be denied boarding if their passport expires less than three months after their return date.

Post-Brexit rules also mean that EU countries no longer accept passports issued more than 10 years ago .

UK passports issued before September 2018 can have up to nine months added to the 10 years when they are renewed. This means some British travellers have been told they cannot enter the EU even though their passport has more than three months before the printed expiry date, because the document was issued more than 10 years ago.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “The British passport is an invaluable document that allows millions of citizens to travel around the world.

“We are increasing the cost of applying for a passport to enable us to keep investing in our efficient and secure passport services and keep improving the quality of service British travellers expect.”

Anti-Israel protesters shut down San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge in both directions for hours Monday while also creating traffic jams for drivers trying to reach Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

“Golden Gate Bridge is closed in both directions for an undetermined amount of time,” the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management said in a statement early Monday afternoon, citing a “civic demonstration.

“Expect delays and use alternate routes.”

The bridge reopened again in both directions by late afternoon.

Dozens of anti-Israel activists had stopped their vehicles on all southbound lanes of the famed California span starting around 7.30 a.m. to demand the end of US support of Israel’s war.

The move came hours before hundreds of anti-Israeli protesters wreaked havoc for drivers headed to Chicago’s O’Hare and also in Lower Manhattan in New York City, storming the Brooklyn Bridge and grinding traffic to a halt on its Manhattan-bound side as cops in riot gear fought to contain the unrest.

The California Highway Patrol issued a Sig-alert at about 8:10 a.m. for the southbound lanes of the Golden Gate Bridge and later closed off the northbound lanes as well. They also suspended pedestrian and bicycle traffic across the iconic bridge.

Almost five hours later, the California bridge was still shut down as traffic in the area ground to a halt — with several of the protesters having chained themselves to each other and authorities having to cut them free.

CHP Officer Andrew Barclay told The Post that some of the protesters used the “Sleeping Dragon” method — which involves pipes, barrels and linking arms — to chain themselves to each other inside cars.

“Protesters are chained to their vehicles on the Golden Gate Bridge,” Barclay said. “We have already arrested those who were not chained.

Barclay said more than 20 people have been arrested on the bridge, as of noon local time.

Barrels linked with chains were placed in the road, and protesters sat in lawn chairs with arms entwined to thwart the flow of traffic.

CHP and Oakland police officers in riot gear responded to clear the demonstrators.

Elsewhere, cellphone videos circulating online showed activists sitting in the middle of Interstate 190 with their arms interlocked using long tubes to prevent cars from accessing Chicago’s O’Hare.

Many protesters were seen wearing checkered keffiyeh scarves and brandishing signs reading “Free Palestine” and “Stop Genocide.”

The stunt forced many travelers rushing to make their flights departing from Terminal 1 to grab their luggage and head to the airport on foot, as seen in videos.

Organizers say these protests are a part of A15, a worldwide economic blockade supporting Palestinians and calling for an arms embargo and an end to US taxpayer funding for Israel. Monday is the tax deadline for most Americans.

“On this Tax Day, when millions are paying taxes which fund the ongoing US and Israeli bombardment of Gaza, protestors seek to take dramatic action,” the group Chicago Dissenters wrote in an Instagram post. “O’Hare International Airport is one of the largest in the country, and there will be NO business as usual while Palestinians suffer at the hands of American funded bombing by Israel.”

By 9:30 a.m., the windy city’s officials said the roads had reopened to the airport, allowing traffic to resume flowing with “substantial” residual delays.

Passengers flying out of O’Hare were warned to “allow for extra time if traveling to the airport.”

Earlier, travelers were urged to consider alternative modes of transportation to the airport, including the CTA Blue Line, the airport wrote on X.

O’Hare International Airport is one of the world’s busiest hubs, serving about 83 million people per year.

13. How many blank visa pages do I need, and can I add pages to my passport book?

Some countries require that your passport has two to four blank visa or stamp pages. Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement is not met.

You cannot add visa pages to a current passport book. If you need more pages, you must renew your passport book.

On your passport form, select the option for a "large book" so you can get a passport book with extra visa pages.

14. Can I use a passport to fly in the United States?

Yes. The U.S. passport book and passport card are alternatives to a state-issued REAL ID and can be used for domestic flights.

According to the Department for Homeland Security , residents of all states will soon have to use a Real ID compliant ID for domestic air travel. 2. What should I do if one parent or guardian cannot apply in person?

Both parents or guardians must approve that we can issue a passport to a child, and go with the child to apply in person.
If one or both parents or guardians cannot apply in person with their child, you will need to show more documents.

Important : Submit Form DS-3053 and other notarized statements within three months of signing them.

3. Can I renew my child's passport?

No. You cannot renew your child's passport using Form DS-82. If your child is under age 16 , your child must appear in person with you and the child's other parent or guardian. You must submit your child's Form DS-11 at a passport acceptance facility, or a passport agency or center.

1. Do I have to provide my social security number on my passport application?

Yes. Federal law requires that you provide your social security number, if you have one.

If you do not provide the information, your passport application will be delayed and your application may be denied. You will also be subject to a $500 penalty enforced by the Internal Revenue Service. ( 26 U.S.C. 6039E ).

2. What if I or my children don’t have a social security number?

Submit a signed and dated statement. You must include the statement with the application, and include this text:

“I declare under penalty of perjury under the laws of the United States of America that the following is true and correct: I (or my child) have never been issued a social security number by the Social Security Administration.”

1. What is the passport card?

The U.S. passport card is a wallet-sized, plastic passport that has no visa pages. The card is proof of U.S. citizenship and identity, and has the same length of validity as the passport book.

The card is for U.S. citizens who travel by land and sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and Caribbean countries.

The card is not valid for international travel by air and is cheaper than the passport book.

You can apply for either the book or card, or both documents.

2. How do I apply for a passport card?

You can apply for both a passport book and passport card at the same time using the same application. When completing your form, let us know if you would like to apply for one or both documents.

If you're renewing both your passport book and passport card, you must provide both documents. If you can submit a passport book, but you lost your passport card, you cannot renew the passport card using Form DS-82.

3. Can I get a passport card if I already have a passport book?

Yes. If you already have a passport book and you are eligible to use Form DS-82, you may apply for a passport card by mail as a "renewal" even if it is your first passport card.

You can do the same and apply for your first passport book by mail as a "renewal" if you already have a passport card.
