Ultimate Guide to Catholic Shrines in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is a state in the northeast United States. Its history served great importance in American history, and with that includes the growth of Christianity through early settlers and immigration. Oftentimes, churches were set up to serve particular immigrant groups. According to the Pew Research Center (2014), 73% of the population in Pennsylvania are Christians, and of that percentage, 24% are Catholic. Through the years, many churches and shrines have been built for the faithful in Pennsylvania to practice and enrich their faith. This ultimate guide to Catholic shrines in Pennsylvania will highlight must-see places for your next pilgrimage!

What can I do at each shrine?

NOTE: Due to the varying mandates and responses from the COVID-19 pandemic, Masses, services, public prayer, access to relics, etc may be limited or unavailable. Please verify with the particular shrine before you go! Websites and contact info provided below.

In general, shrines offer a place and times of prayer. And shrines typically have a relic or image of a particular saint and are designated as the particular place for public devotion related to that saint. Some shrines are normal parish churches or some are set up specifically to handle many pilgrims. Yet even some others are part of a religious community such as part of a convent or monastery.

Typically at shrines, you should be able to:

  • Attend Mass
  • Receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession)
  • Participate in particular devotions like novenas related to the saint the shrine is named after
  • See and venerate a saint’s relics

Some shrines offer more such as ministries or services specific to visitors and pilgrims. For more specialized offerings, check out each shrine listed below!

Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Ann

Address: 1233 St. Ann Street, Scranton, PA 18504

Phone: 570-347-5691 (Shrine), 570-342-5166 (Rectory)

  • Parish: http://stannbasilica.org/
  • Monastery and Shrine Basilica: https://www.stannsmonasterybasilica.org/

Started by Passionists fathers at the turn of the 20th century, St. Ann’s is the home of one of their monasteries and the popular novena devotion to St. Ann. In its early years, the monastery was damaged by rock slides resulting from work in the local coal mines of Scranton. In the early 1920’s, a few lay faithful started requesting the rector to hold a weekly novena to honor St. Ann, and the devotion greatly grew resulting in a church being built to accommodate the faithful ( “St. Ann’s History, n.d. ). To this day, the St. Ann Novena continues and many pilgrims flock to the shrine, especially during the month July when the Feast of St. Ann occurs and a solemn version of the novena is prayed. Through the years, many miracles were attributed to this devotion of the St. Ann Novena. Pope St. John Paul II declared St. Ann’s to be a Minor Basilica on October 27, 1997.

The Basilica features:

  • Public devotion: St. Ann Novena and Solemn Novena
  • Confessions
  • Gift shop, especially St. Ann’s oil

Central Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal

Address: 500 E Chelten Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19144

Phone: 215-848-1010 or Toll Free 1-800-523-3674

In the mid-1800’s, some Vincentians from the Congregation of the Mission established a seminary chapel to foster vocations. After some years, they planned to build a chapel for their own congregation, but the then-Bishop of Philadelphia asked them to make the chapel public. This chapel became the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception. In the early 1900’s, national devotion to the Miraculous Medal blossomed prompting the director of the Central Association of the Miraculous Medal, Fr. Skelly, to build a shrine in the Chapel to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal ( “A Home for Mary, the Miraculous Medal Shrine” , 2020). From completing the shrine, a “Monday Novena” was started by Fr. Skelly as tribute to the Blessed Mother–a devotion that continues today with pilgrims flocking to the Shrine every Monday.

For more information about the Miraculous Medal, check this out!

This shrine features:

  • Public devotion: Perpetual Novena (“Monday Novena”)
  • Adoration, Confessions
  • Group pilgrimages and tours

Address: 501 Ridge Ave, Allentown, PA 18102

Website: http://immaculateconceptionallentown.org/index.html

Dedicated on October 25, 1857 by St. John Neumann, then-bishop of Philadelphia, Immaculate Conception parish in Allentown has served the faithful for over 160 years. In the 1970’s, the US Conference of Bishops desired to establish a National Shrine in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and the then-pastor of the time, Monsignor Thompson, petitioned the Conference for Immaculate Conception parish to host the shrine. And they agreed. The church became a National Shrine in December of 1974 ( “History of Our Church” , n.d.). Inside the church, the faithful and pilgrims can find a portrait of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe over a side altar.

The National Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe features:

  • Special Mass on December 12, Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa

Address: 654 Ferry Road, Doylestown, PA 18901

Phone: 215-345-0600

Website: https://czestochowa.us/

Our Lady of Czestochowa is a famous icon of the Blessed Mother and the child Jesus in Czestochowa, Poland. It currently resides in the Jasna Gora monastery and shrine for pilgrims to view and venerate. Many miracles have been attributed to Our Lady of Czestochowa. To read more about the original icon, check out this page!

In the early 1950’s, Fr. Michael Zembruzki from the Pauline Fathers came to the United States with the desire to establish a similar shrine to Jasna Gora. A few years later, a barn chapel was built and dedicated to Our Lady of Czestochowa ( The National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa , n.d.). Soon pilgrims frequented the chapel to the point that the barn chapel was no longer adequate to host the many pilgrims from America and Poland. The current building and grounds were dedicated in 1966 and designated as a National Shrine in 2009.

At the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa, you can:

  • Go to Confession
  • Group tours and pilgrimages

National Shrine of Saint Rita of Cascia

Address: 1166 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19146

Phone: 215-546-8333

Website: https://www.saintritashrine.org/

Because of the needs of many immigrant families residing in the area in the early 1900’s, with the help of one generous donor and the zeal of the Augustinian Friars and the then-Bishop Patrick Ryan, they established the parish of St. Rita’s. The church nearly closed in the early 1990’s, but the local community pulled together to revitalize it. In the year 2000, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops declared it as the National Shrine of St. Rita of Cascia ( History, The National Shrine of St. Rita Cascia , n.d.). Since then, the shrine has undergone renovations and more buildings added to further outreach to the local community. Many pilgrims and devoted faithful return to the shrine each year on St. Rita’s feast day on May 22 for the Solemn Novena.

To learn more about St. Rita, check this out!

At the National Shrine of St. Rita of Cascia, you can:

  • Participate in the Solemn Novena and feast day for St. Rita

Saint Jude Church and Shrine

Address: 321 Butler Ave., Chalfont, PA 18914

Phone: 215-822-0179

Website: https://stjudechalfont.org/

This parish church was established in 1962 on farm land by Archbishop John Krol. The first pastor, Fr. Robert Gregg, desired that the parish be named after St. Jude the Apostle, and also be the regional shrine for St. Jude ( St. Jude Church and Shrine , n.d.). Since then, a school was built and the numbers continued to grow. Unfortunately, a fire burned the church to the ground in October of 1982, but members of the community came together to rebuild the church and shrine, which was dedicated on September 23, 1984. Visitors and pilgrims can participate in the usual worship and devotions, novenas, and veneration of St. Jude’s relic offered throughout the week.

Here at St. Jude’s, you can:

  • Venerate a relic of St. Jude
  • Pray the Solemn Novena or weekly Novena prayers

Address: 1704 Harpster Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212

Phone: 412-999-4401

Website: https://pghshrines.org/about-st-anthony-chapel

Probably one of those most unique shrines on this guide, St. Anthony’s Chapel is famous for having a collection of over 5000 relics! The only other place in the world with more relics is the Vatican ( Shrines of Pittsburgh , n.d.). Fr. Mollinger started construction on the chapel in 1880 as a place to house his collection of relics, which included a first-class relic of St. Anthony of Padua for whom the shrine is named after. In addition to the many relics and reliquaries, the chapel features many decorations imported from Europe evoking beauty and excellent craftsmanship.

The St. Anthony Chapel features:

You may have seen the Falls before but you’ve never seen them quite like this. Hold onto your heart and keep your eyes wide open because you’re in for the thrill of a lifetime! The legendary Niagara Falls boat tour takes you as close as possible to the thundering roar, awesome power and amazing mist of the mighty Falls!

To stand at the heart of Niagara, you’ll first need to descend 150 feet and explore 130-year-old tunnels through the bedrock, but you’ll feel the thunderous vibration of the Horseshoe Falls long before you see them. The observation deck at the foot of this 13-story-tall wonder will leave you breathless (and maybe a little bit wet), but don’t forget the viewing portals cut straight through the rock, offering a once-in-a-lifetime view of one-fifth of the world’s fresh water crashing down in front of you.

Take a walk like no other, along a boardwalk at the very edge of one of the world’s wildest stretches of whitewater! Marvel at the relentless power and beauty of nature, and see how the deep and narrow Great Gorge was created. Trillions of gallons of water are forced into this accelerating trough–the sight will take your breath away!

Soar the Great Gorge, high above the racing Niagara River. You’ll be transported through the air in an antique cable car, while far below the torrent of water abruptly changes direction and creates one of the world’s most mesmerizing natural phenomena – the Niagara Whirlpool, sometimes frightening and always unforgettable!

Butterfly Conservatory

Located on the grounds of the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens, you’ll be transported to a tropical paradise full of lush vegetation, trickling waterfalls and thousands of vibrantly colored butterflies. Over 2,000 butterflies, made up of 45 different species, call this beautiful space home. The self-guided walking tour of the Butterfly Conservatory begins with a short, informative video presentation.

The intricate designs on the face of the Floral Clock are created with up to 16,000 carpet bedding plants and are changed twice each year. The planted face of the Floral Clock is maintained by the Niagara Parks horticulture staff, while the mechanism inside is kept in working order by Ontario Hydro. The tower at the back of the clock houses Westminster chimes that greet each quarter hour.

Chesapeake City is a picturesque small town located on the C&D Canal, which connects the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays. The town is located along Route 213 and is split north to south by the C&D Canal. This historic canal opened in 1829 and has provided important access to the Chesapeake Bay since. Ocean-going ships and tugs pulling barges can be seen passing through the center of town.

Chesapeake City is world renown for its famous Thoroughbred Horse Farms! We’ll go for an informative ride through the area, without leaving the coach!

Assateague Visitor’s Center & Cruise

Assateague’s wild horses are well known, even to many people who have never been to the island. The “wild” horses on Assateague are actually feral animals, meaning that they are descendants of domestic animals that have reverted to a wild state. Horses tough enough to survive the scorching heat, abundant mosquitoes, stormy weather and poor quality food found on this remote, windswept barrier island have formed a unique wild horse society. Enjoy their beauty from a distance, and you can help make sure these extraordinary wild horses will continue to thrive on Assateague Island.

Enjoy an 80 minute cruise aboard the Assateague Adventure II and see the wild ponies in their natural habitat, bird watch, learn about the eco system, and the fishing boats and navigate Ocean City’s commercial fishing boat harbor.

Presently, an estimated 500 acres of this historic property have been painstakingly preserved along the banks of the Potomac River.

George Washington’s Mansion is ten times the size of the average home in colonial Virginia.

Inside the Mansion, guests can see: the New Room, the grandest space in the house, the Key to the Bastille, given to George Washington by the Marquis de Lafayette in 1790, family portraits and the Washington coat of arms, Washington’s private study

The illuminated tour provides a unique perspective to visitors as they witness DC by night. When the museums and other attractions close for the evening, a tour guide can show your group the memorials in their splendor.

Arlington National Cemetery, the most famous cemetery in the country, is the final resting place for many of our nation’s greatest heroes, including more than 300,000 veterans of every American conflict, from the Revolutionary War to Iraq and Afghanistan.  Since its founding in 1866, Arlington National Cemetery has provided a solemn place to reflect upon the sacrifices made by the men and women of the United States Armed Forces in the name of our country.

In addition to exploring beautiful waterfalls and The Cornell University campus, your guide will weave stories of Ithaca’s history and classic tales of Cornell throughout the tour. The end result will be an intimate experience of our unique and “gorges” town.  In addition stop at the Cayuga Lake front and Stewart Park, where you will learn more about the lake itself, how the park used to be home to a silent movie production company that brought all the big movie stars of the time – Irene Castle, Lionel Barrymore, Mary Pickford – to Ithaca.

Travel back in history and tour the Granger mansion, Victorian gardens, largest horse-drawn carriage collection in Western NY, and five outbuildings on their 12 acre beautifully-maintained property.  The property consists of an 1816 Federal-style mansion named after the Granger family, a prominent political family. It remained in the Granger family for four generations. The property also features the Hubbell Law Office, a carriage house and two barns that displays nearly 100 antique carriages, sleighs and farming equipment.

It’s a Wonderful Life Museum

The It’s A Wonderful Life Museum is in the heart of Seneca Falls, New York, a few blocks east of the iconic It’s A Wonderful Life bridge. In the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life,” the story is set in Bedford Falls. Even though Bedford Falls is a fictional town, Seneca Falls appears to have striking similarities to the movie scenes, and it is believed that the movie was loosely based on a true story from a local member of the community.  Inside the museum, there are hundreds of personal artifacts, photos, and memorabilia from the It’s a Wonderful Life movie.

Ventosa Vineyards

Ventosa is located on 23 acres of estate vineyards overlooking Seneca Lake consisting only of vinifera varietals. The von Trapp family’s journey is a remarkable story. In 1938, just before World War II, the Baron and the Baroness von Trapp left all their possessions and estate near Salzburg. With nine children and one on the way, they fled Austria and were granted asylum in this country. Arriving with only $4.00, they settled in Philadelphia, and through their music, turned a family hobby into a profession as the Trapp Family Singers.  They soon bought a small farmhouse in Stowe, Vermont, because the landscape reminded them of home. Here, the family lived peacefully and continued to travel the world singing.   Maria wrote an autobiography that inspired the play and movie,  The Sound of Music , and her story became an American legend.  What was once a modest farm grew into a world-renowned resort, and is now overseen by Johannes, the youngest of the singing von Trapp children, and his family.

Blue Sky Mausoleum in Forest Lawn Cemetery

Frank Lloyd Wright designed Blue Sky Mausoleum at the request of Darwin D. Martin, secretary of the Larkin Soap Company.  Frank Lloyd Wright “broke the box” of memorial architecture tradition. His design fully manifests his principle of “organic” architecture. The structure is integrated into the landscape, and its granite echoes the stone of nearby monuments. The blue sky is its ceiling, and living greens gently suggest its walls. The edifice overlooks a peaceful pond.  In this serene setting, visitors feel the eternal connections between earth and sky, and lives present and past. Soon after the mausoleum’s plans were presented, however, Martin lost his fortune and the project was tabled.

The project languished until the 1990s when Fred Whaley, Jr., president of Forest Lawn, discovered that a Wright memorial had once been designed for the cemetery. He then spearheaded the effort to raise public support and funds to develop the monument. Blue Sky Mausoleum was finally opened in October 2004. The design for the mausoleum has been forever retired, making this beautiful structure truly one of a kind.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House

Buffalo had never seen the likes of what Wright had in store for the Martin family. Set among a neighborhood of wood-frame Victorian houses, the six-building Martin House Complex featured sleek horizontal lines and a lack of ornamentation that distinguished it from the surrounding homes. It was also enormous.  Consisting of the Martin House and the Barton House (built for Martin’s sister and her husband), as well as a conservatory, carriage house, gardeners cottage and 100-foot-long pergola, the complex occupied more than 30,000 square feet on a one-and-a half- acre lot.  The site ranks as one of Wright’s finest residential projects – a place where architecture, the surrounding landscape, and an extensive collection of art glass and furnishings come together to form a complete work of genius.

Perched on a cliff high above Lake Erie on the outskirts of Buffalo, NY, Graycliff is one of the most ambitious summer estates Wright ever designed, and has been aptly called “the Jewel on the Lake.” Built in 1927, the summer estate, spread over 8.5 acres, includes three structures and gardens of the architect’s design. The main residence is most notable for its pavilion-like center of transparent glass, which enables one to see through the house to the lake beyond. The building’s graceful organic style also features cantilevered balconies, ribbon windows and expansive terraces.

Locust Grove Estate

The Locust Grove Estate was purchased by painter and inventor Samuel Morse in 1847, using his profits from the invention of the telegraph. With the help of architect Alexander Jackson Davis, Morse remodeled the house in the Tuscan style, adding a porte cochere, two wings, and a four-story tower. The Morses sold the property to William and Martha Young in 1901 and the Youngs filled the mansion’s 25 rooms with their collections of 18th and 19th century furniture, paintings, silver and porcelain. Conscious of the estate’s importance, the Young’s daughter opened the house to the public in 1979 with her family’s collections intact. The 200 acres of landscaped grounds are set on a sharp bluff overlooking the Hudson River and retain the large flower and kitchen gardens planted and designed by the Youngs. A visitor’s center houses exhibits of Morse’s paintings and telegraph equipment. Walkers can stroll on the carriage roads that wind through the estate grounds.

Staatsburgh State Historic Site

Staatsburgh State Historic Site is the elegant country home of Ogden Mills and his wife Ruth Livingston Mills. Overlooking the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains, Staatsburgh is a fine example of a great estate built by America’s financial and industrial leaders during the Gilded Age (1876 – 1917). Also known as the American Renaissance, this period in American history was marked by America’s rapid economic growth and emergence as a world power. Darius Ogden Mills, father of Ogden Mills, established the family fortune by investing in banks, railroads and mines. Ogden Mills, like his father, was a noted financier and philanthropist. In 1882 he married Ruth Livingston, whose family had been prominent landowners in the Hudson Valley since the 17th century. In 1890, Ruth Livingston Mills inherited her childhood home and property which had once belonged to her great-grandfather, Morgan Lewis, the third governor of New York State.

Village of Rhinebeck

Rhinebeck is a charming, historic town nestled in New York’s scenic Hudson Valley. Tree-lined streets beckon with unique independent specialty shops offering apparel, home furnishings, books and gifts. The many fine and casual dining spots celebrate the Hudson Valley’s thriving locavore movement of boutique farms and orchards.

Clermont State Historic Site

Clermont State Historic Site was the country seat of the Livingston family. Originally a Georgian Mansion, over the years the house was added onto to give it its present appearance. Seven generations of Livingstons as well as dozens of enslaved people and paid servants lived at Clermont. The land surrounding the house was occupied by tenant farmers, beholden to the Livingston, the farms of small freeholders and mills. For the first few generations, Livingston owned ships full of paid sailors plied the river between Clermont, New York City and Albany. Over time, through land sales and the division of land through gifts and inheritance Clermont’s land shrunk until it was just the confines of the present historic site. With this contraction of land came a contraction of power and influence for the family.

Today Clermont is decorated as it appeared circa 1930 when it was home to Alice Delafield Clarkson Livingston, her daughters Honoria and Janet, and their staff of servants.

Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973, Clermont is also an anchor of the Hudson River National Landmark District.

Haunted Happenings

Salem’s connection to Halloween begins with the tragic events that unfolded during the Salem Witch Trials. The 19 innocent victims who lost their lives in 1692 were not witches, they were only so accused due to Puritan beliefs of the time. The Salem Witch Trials were later revived with Arthur Miller’s 1953 work, The Crucible, and again in 1992 during the tercentenary of the events and the unveiling of the Salem Witch Trials Memorial. By 1982, the City has planned the first Salem Haunted Happenings Festival during Halloween weekend. The festival was an effort to provide family-friendly events for guests who were interested in visiting the “Witch City.” Following the first festival’s success with about 50,000 guests in attendance, the annual event has continued to grow each season, drawing everyone from families, couples, history buffs, and Halloween enthusiasts from all over the world.

Today, members of the modern Pagan and Witch communities have a home in Salem, where Samhain is celebrated each October recognizing the end of the harvest season and the coming of winter. The City’s modern witches have the unique opportunity of being able to share their beliefs and celebrations with both locals and out of town guests who come to celebrate the Halloween season in Salem.

The Salem Witch Museum is a museum in Salem, MA about the Witch Trials of 1692. The museum is based on the actual documents of the trials.  A multi-sensory presentation including 13 life-sized stage settings that recreates the horrible and truthful events known as the Salem Witch Trials.

The audience is the jury at the trial of Bridget Bishop, accused of witchcraft.  Hear the testimony, ask the questions, and you decide the verdict – innocent or guilty?

The engaging and often ghostly guides creatively convey Salem’s authentic haunted history.

With more than 300 growers farming over 13,000 acres of bogs, cranberries are the number one food crop in Massachusetts.  Your guide will discuss the yearly cycle of cranberry growing, the methods of harvesting, and give you some insight on being a cranberry farmer. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussions throughout the tour.

The Sandwich Historical Society and its Glass Museum collects, preserves, and interprets the history of the Town of Sandwich, MA, the oldest town on Cape Cod. A large part of Sandwich history is involved with American glass production.  The Sandwich Glass Museum has “Relit the Fires in Sandwich” with a glass furnace for hourly glass making presentations and new exhibits to better tell the story of the glass industry in Sandwich.  Watch the glassblower turn and twist the hot glass into wonderful forms, and visions of those former days will not be so difficult to understand or imagine.

Plimoth Patuxet provides an engaging and experiential outdoor and indoor learning environment on its main campus and at the State Pier on Plymouth’s waterfront, and at the Plimoth Grist Mill on Town Brook. The permanent exhibits tell the complex and interwoven stories of two distinct cultures – English and Native. The main exhibits are enhanced with an exciting menu of special events, public programs, and workshops that offer a rich and diverse exploration of the 17th-century.

All Aboard  Mayflower II ! Along with national treasures such as the Statue of Liberty and the Lincoln Memorial,  Mayflower  is an iconic symbol of freedom. Of the hundreds of ships that made the transatlantic crossing in the 1600s, she is the ship we remember. Three hundred years later, on June 13, 1957, a full-scale reproduction arrived in Plymouth Harbor,  Mayflower II .

Today,  Mayflower II  is a floating classroom and working vessel. Following her restoration and return to Plymouth in 2020, she was added to the National Register of Historic Places, illuminating that she is a historic ship in her own right.

At this reproduction of the Plymouth Colonists’ original 1636 grain mill on Town Brook, take a fascinating look at the mill’s history and workings, from the 200-year-old millstones grinding corn to the ecology of the brook that has powered mills throughout the centuries.

Plimoth Grist Mill is a working mill and is proud to be part of a growing movement to localize grain production and rebuild regional grain economies.

Located on the Eel River, the Historic Patuxet Homesite is where guests learn about the Native peoples who have lived here for over 12,000 years.  You will learn about the Indigenous heritage of the Northeast from contemporary interpreters who discuss the 17th-century life-ways of a culture that continues to thrive today

A common field one day.  A field of honor forever.  On Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001, the U.S. came under attack when four commercial airliners were hijacked and used to strike targets on the ground. Nearly 3,000 people tragically lost their lives.  The Flight 93 National Memorial, administered by the National Park Service, serves as a permanent memorial to the 40 heroes on United Flight 93 who courageously gave their lives thwarting a planned attack on the nation’s capital on September 11, 2001.

Dozens of Christmas trees are expertly decorated and designed to complement the elegant period furnishings within the rooms of the house. During this month only, our curators bring out rarely-seen items that belonged to Lyndhurst’s former owners. This is a once-a-year opportunity to see many of the glittering possessions that are usually tucked away in our archives.

Guided Tour of Newport

Holidays at the Newport Mansions

Surround yourself with the magic of the Newport Mansions during the holiday season! See The Breakers, Marble House and The Elms in all their festive finery – a beloved Newport tradition.

These great Gilded Age houses will welcome visitors with spectacular holiday displays. Nearly 30 Christmas trees are exquisitely decorated to complement the décor and theme of each room, like Mr. Vanderbilt’s tree in The Breakers, ornamented with trains and top hats! Hundreds of poinsettias, garlands, wreaths and fresh floral arrangements add color, warmth and life. As always, the 15-foot-tall poinsettia tree in the Great Hall of The Breakers – made up of 150 poinsettia plants – provides a perfect holiday photo opportunity.

Marble House

William Vanderbilt built Marble House as a 39th birthday present for his wife Alva Vanderbilt. It was a social and architectural landmark that set the pace for Newport’s subsequent transformation from a quiet summer colony of wooden houses to the legendary resort of opulent Gilded Age mansions. The house was designed by the architect Richard Morris Hunt, inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles. The cost of the house was reported in contemporary press accounts to be $11 million, of which $7 million was spent on 500,000 cubic feet of marble.

Sparkling Lights at The Breakers brings the magic of the holidays inside and outside this landmark Gilded Age mansion! You’ll stroll along a half-mile-long path glittering with hundreds of thousands of holiday lights while music fills the winter air. See illuminated displays and sparkling surprises along the way. Tour the opulent interior of The Breakers decorated in holiday splendor.

The Elms was the summer residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind, whose fortune was made in the coal industry. Architect Horace Trumbauer modeled it after the 18th-century French chateau d’Asnieres outside Paris.  The Elms combines the elegance of French style with the grandeur of the Gilded Age. Its landscape and art collections are among the finest in Newport.
