21 Charming Texas Coastal Towns

1. galveston.

This island city is full of Southern charm. If you’re looking to get away from the noise of the city, Galveston is the best place to relax.

In the past, it was the largest city in Texas and one of the largest ports in the United States. But the Galveston Hurricane of the 1900s ended their reign. Now, it is filled with restaurants, decorated Victorian houses and a colourful boardwalk. Galveston is a vibrant slice of paradise.

Galveston

Be sure to head over to the Galveston Island State Park, and enjoy the scenic hiking trails or have a dip in one of the many swimming spots.

In the evenings, you can head to the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier for carnival rides, fried food, and gorgeous sunset views.

2. South Padre Island

South Padre Island is known as the “Spring Break Island”. It’s a party in the USA for sure on this island. However, South Padre Island is a year-round destination with warm waters and sunny skies. So, if you’re not up for a college flashback on vacation, you can still enjoy the perks of the island in late August and early September and avoid the crowds.

South Padre Island

SPI is located at the southern tip of Texas, along the Gulf of Mexico and you are sure to have a vacation full of adventure. Go horseback riding on the beach, join a dolphin watching tour or learn how to kitesurf here.

The crown jewel of South Padre Island is Isla Blanca Park, located along the southern edge of South Padre. This park is filled with white-sand beaches, boating facilities, picnicking pavilions, and fishing spots.

Kemah is located near Houston and this small Texan beach town is unlike any small town you know.

Kemah is a mecca of fun, family-friendly activities. Famous for its boardwalk, you and your family can enjoy a variety of attractions, including roller coasters, arcade games and shopping.

Kemah

This beach town is also great for indulging in a variety of water sports and swimming. Visit the Kemah Clear Lake Park and you will find a children’s play area, local flora and fauna, picnic tables and an excellent fishing spot or two.

If you love standing by the grill, Rockport also has a few BBQ grill spots for beachgoers who want to have a Texas-style beach vacation.

5. Port Aransas

Port Aransas is one of Texas’ most popular beach destinations. It has everything you want on vacation. With a wide range of incredible outdoor activities to cultural activities, this spot on the Gulf Coast is a must-visit.

The beaches are incredibly unique, and you can get the most of the Texas coast here. So, why not indulge in all the outdoor activities the town has to offer? Like parasailing, kayaking, or windsurfing. But don’t worry, if all you want to do on your vacation is take things slow, you can rent a bike and cruise down the town and soak up the Port Aransas sun.

Port Aransas

Port Aransas also hosts the annual Sand Fest . This is where sculptors create impressive lifesize sandcastles. Thousands of people head over to Port Aransas to see them. The bonus to the event is that the profits earned from the festival go to local schools and the community.

6. San Jose Island

San Jose Island is the perfect place for nature lovers. Besides the amazing beaches here, there are tons of tropical birds that love to serenade their guests. Talk about southern hospitality.

San Jose Island

On this island, you can enjoy some downtime because the beaches offer 33 km (12 miles) of pristine coastline and are not very crowded. So, take the opportunity to enjoy the salty breeze and the sunshine, uninterrupted.

The beaches offer plenty to do, though. Popular activities include birding, shelling and fishing. While swimming or fishing from the island’s jetties, keep an eye out for sea turtles; these marine animals are commonly spotted in the area.

It is home to 300,000 people and it’s a beach town that has something for everyone. In Corpus Christi, you’ll have easy accessibility to the big city and its long, beautiful coastline.

Corpus Christi

The beaches here are great for swimming and other water activities. Corpus Christi has a lot of history and culture to learn about, so visit some of their biggest attractions like the USS Lexington . This is a large aircraft carrier from the Second World War.

Corpus Christi also has a great art scene. One of the best museums in this beach town is the Art Museum of South Texas. You will mainly find great contemporary art from local artists. Boca Chica, located near South Padre Island, is a hidden gem around Texas. This extremely small, quaint coastal beachside community is home to the Boca Chica State Park on the Gulf Coast.

However, due to the nature of this laid-back Texas beach town, there aren’t a lot of amenities readily available to their guests. So, you will need to bring all your equipment for fishing, bodyboarding, and whatever other beach activity you may want to do here.

Boca Chica

While remaining off the grid for years, recently, Boca Chica has become famous as the launch site of SpaceX, the private space exploration company founded by Elon Musk of Tesla.

North Padre Island

12 Best Things to Do on the Texas Gulf Coast

Tim Boyles / Getty Images News / Getty Images

Texas has over 300 miles of coastline bordering the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to many stretches of beautiful beach, the Texas Gulf Coast region is home to some of the state's most popular attractions. There are aquariums to visit, historic sites to tour and, of course, some great seafood to enjoy. If you're planning a trip to the Texas coast, consider adding these must-dos to your itinerary.

See the Marine Life

Courtesy of TripAdvisor

The "official" aquarium of Texas, the Texas State Aquarium houses hundreds of marine animals and provides educational programs for visitors of all ages. Located in Corpus Christi on the middle of the Texas coast, the  Texas State Aquarium  attracts over 500,000 visitors each year. You can encounter Dolphins, meet a sloth, and feed the fish with the aquarium's special encounters program. Visitors will enjoy exploring the large aquarium which houses over 460 species and taking in the educational and fun presentations held throughout the day.

Go Aboard the USS Lexington

Following many years of "active duty," the WWII-era USS Lexington "retired" to Corpus Christi. The Lexington now serves as a floating museum and even offers overnight stays. The most popular tour is the Flight Deck experience where you'll get up close to 20 vintage aircraft on loan from the National Museum of Naval Aviation. You’ll also get a look at the anti-aircraft guns and the deck apparatus that helped the landing jets quickly stop on the deck.

Experience Moody Gardens

Stephen Saks/ Getty Images

Visitors crossing the causeway to Galveston will surely see the pyramids rising on the western side of the island. Those pyramids are just part of magnificent Moody Gardens. With attractions that include several aquariums, an IMAX theater, and even a rainforest, Moody Gardens is a must-see for Galveston visitors.

Visit the Texas Seaport Museum

Home to the 1877 tall ship Elissa, a National Historic Landmark, the Texas Seaport Museum tells the seaborne history of Galveston, which was known as "The Ellis Island of the West" in the 1800s. The Texas Seaport Museum has the nation’s only computerized listing of immigrants to Galveston, Texas and the museum’s immigration exhibit tells the story of immigrants who arrived in the United States via ships docking in Galveston Harbor. Unlike some tall ships of today the Elissa is not a replica, but a historic ship which still is taken out periodically to sail.

See a Lighthouse—and its View

Located in Port Isabel, one of the oldest towns in Texas, the Point Isabel Lighthouse served mariners along the Lower Texas Coast throughout the Civil War and into the 1900s. You can take in the view of South Padre Island and the beaches from the light tower. A number of couples have climbed the 75 winding stairs (including three short ladders) to exchange wedding vows at the top of the tower.

The lighthouse sits on a grassy hill where there are picnic tables and areas to hang out to enjoy the view.

See a Sea Turtle Close-Up

Sea Turtle, Inc/ Facebook

South Padre Island's Sea Turtle, Inc. is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating sea turtles, particularly the endangered Kemp's Ridley. Sea Turtle, Inc. also offers educational tours, giving visitors an up-close look at these magnificent creatures.

Learn About Marine Life at Sea Center Texas

Located in Lake Jackson, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Sea Center Texas serves as a marine hatchery, museum, and aquarium all in one and admission is free. There is a boardwalk trail over the outdoor wetlands where you can look for more marine life and birds. In the lobby, there are fiberglass replicas of state record saltwater fishes overhead. The 25 fiberglass mounts include huge fish like blue marlin, tarpon, and large sharks.

Tour the Battleship Texas

A veteran of both World Wars, the Battleship Texas is now moored at the San Jacinto Historical Site, just a short drive from Houston, where it is open for tours to the public. The USS Texas is one of the longest-serving Naval vessels in United States history and is the only surviving vessel to have served in both World War I and World War II. You can tour the Battleship Texas and get a sense of military history during the era of both world wars.

Visit the Museum of the Gulf Coast

 Diann Bayes / Flickr / CC BY-NC-ND 2.0

Located in Port Arthur, the Museum of the Gulf Coast traces the history of the Texas/Louisiana Gulf Coast region from prehistoric times to the present day. At the museum, you'll find a gallery of Robert Rauschenberg's artwork. Rauschenberg was an American painter and graphic artist whose early works contributed to the initiation of the pop art movement. There is also a Music Hall of Fame honoring performers from the region including Janis Joplin.

Check out the Museums of Port Isabel

Witold Skrypczak/ Getty Images

Located just across the bay from South Padre Island in historic Port Isabel, the museums of Port Isabel celebrate the history of Port Isabel, South Padre Island, and the Lower Laguna Madre area. At the Port Isabel Historical Museum, you'll see exhibits and artifacts from the Mexican-American War through to the current day, including the iconic 1906 fish mural. After the Champion building was constructed, local fisherman and artist, Jose Morales was commissioned to paint a fish mural on the front to promote sport fishing in the area. He painted over 200 images representing the species that can be found in the Laguna Madre Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.

Savor the Seafood

There are seafood eateries all along the Gulf Coast and each town has its special ones. Find out what the fishing boats are bringing in and seek out a restaurant that is featuring that type of seafood.

Some visitor favorites include The Original Oyster House in Gulf Shores, an inland waterfront mainstay serving seafood platters and Cajun specialties like shrimp. Gaido's on Galveston Island is known for its fresh shrimp and pecan pie. For fresh, made-to-order ceviche, the informal Ceviche, Ceviche , on South Padre Island is a favorite with beach-goers.

Visit the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum

Buffalo Soldiers National Museum/ Facebook

The Perfect Texas Gulf Coast Road Trip Itinerary: See the Coast of Texas in 10 Days!

Last Updated on: 28th January 2022, 03:24 am

I grew up spending family vacations on Texas’s Gulf Coast, and there really is nothing better than a Texas Gulf Coast road trip! Here’s my recommendations for the perfect Gulf Coast itinerary that goes from Corpus Christi to Galveston.

Can’t read now? Pin for later!

Texas Coast Road Trip Itinerary

When you think of Texas you probably conjure up images of Stetson-toting cowboys, dry desert landscapes, and epic BBQs. The popular image of the Lone Star State doesn’t often include much in the way of water.

But Texas has an absolutely awesome coastline, 367 miles stretching all the way from the bayous of Louisiana to Matamoros in Mexico. Without a shadow of a doubt, the best way to explore this beautiful corner of Texas is by hitting the road on a Texas beach road trip!

Where to Start Your Texas Beach Road Trip?

Texas - Bolivar Point Lighthouse. Galveston, Texas, USA.

Exploring the Gulf Coast in Texas offers magnificent beaches, stunning landscapes, and adventure at every turn. You really can’t go wrong no matter which city you choose to start from.

Coming down from Oklahoma, you might want to start in the north. In that case, you can follow this itinerary backward. I started in the south because I usually drive down to Corpus to stay with family before heading to the beach.

If you are planning a cruise  from New Orleans, or just looking for somewhere new to explore, a Texas Coast road trip is a brilliant way to start out. You can keep going around the gulf til you hit NOLA. Of course, going from Corpus Christi to New Orleans will tack on a few extra days?

Check out this itinerary for some inspiration, and  start planning your next adventure today and check out this great Texas road trip playlist.

Texas Coast Road Trip Itinerary

Here’s my idea of a fabulous Texas beach road trip.

Day One and Two: Corpus Christi

Texas - Corpus Christi Texas Skyline view of City harbor bridge in background with many rows of piers filled with boats and sailboats and yachts across the summer vacation landmark getaway

Corpus Christi is a pretty city, well worth exploring before you set off. Sitting on the edge of a wide bay, its beaches are nicely sheltered, and the Texas State Aquarium is also worth a look.

While here, visit the USS Lexington, an Essex-class aircraft carrier built during World War II for the United States Navy which is now a fabulous naval museum right on the water.

5 More Things to Do in Corpus Christi

Texas - USS Lexington aka The Blue Ghost Essex-class aircraft carrier built during World War II for the United States Navy. Located in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Besides the aquarium and the Lexington, don’t miss:

  • Selena Museum
  • South Texas Botanical Gardens
  • North Beach
  • The Art Museum of South Texas
  • Hurricane Alley Water Park

Where to Stay in Corpus Christi

Here are recommendations for each budget category and an Airbnb option. These options are near North Beach which is conveniently located near most of the best things to do in Corpus.

Budget: Motel 6 Corpus Christi

Mid-Range: Hotel DeVille

Luxury: Omni Corpus Christi Hotel

Airbnb: Surfer’s Dream Private Beachfront Condo

Day Three and Four: Port Aransas (Mustang Island)

Texas - Port Aransas - Colorful Houses at Sunrise

From Corpus Christi, head south to Mustang and Padre Islands, where you can see huge flocks of migratory birds, and if you are lucky, endangered kemp’s ridley sea turtles!

I like to keep my time in Port Aransas loose, bouncing between the islands based on weather and what I want to do that day. My primary goal out here is to just relax, but if you’re more into fishing than sunbathing, check out my cousin Stanley Orchard’s YouTube channel about fishing in the area.

Where to Stay in Port Aransas

Budget: Alister Square Inn

Mid-Range: The Place at Port Aransas

Luxury: Plantation Suites

Airbnb: Beautiful Beachfront Condo

Day Five: Surfside Beach

Texas - Surfside Beach

After exploring Mustang State Park and the gorgeous beaches of South Padre, head north through Port Aransas, Fulton, and Rockport to Surfside, keeping an eye out for Aransas National Wildlife Reserve on your way.

In Surfside Beach, you can bask in nature at the nearby Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge or soak up the beach atmosphere in town.

Where to Stay in Surfside

Budget: Anchor Motel

Mid-Range: Beach House with Sunset Views

Luxury: Ocean Village Hotel

Airbnb: 3BR with Ocean and Bay Views

Day Six through Eight: Galveston

Texas - Galveston - Sunrise Galveston Pleasure Pier

After a night in Surfside, head back up the coast and meander your way along the gorgeous Matagorda Bay coast. Find your way down to Matagorda itself, and spend a while exploring the splendid isolation of Matagorda Island and Matagorda Bay Nature Park.

Moving on, you’ll have to head inland until you reach Angleton when you can dive back down to the Gulf and drive along Galveston Island until you reach Galveston itself.

Check out the Historic Pleasure Pier on the south shore, and the bizarre glass pyramids of Moody Gardens, home to all manner of exotic creatures including sharks, monkeys, and animatronic dinosaurs!

This itinerary sets aside time to really enjoy this coastal gem, so slather on that sunscreen and hit the beach!

5 More Things to Do in Galveston

Besides the pier and the beach, don’t miss:

  • 1892 Bishop’s Palace
  • Strand Historic District
  • Moody Gardens
  • Galveston Historic Seaport
  • Moody Mansion

Where to Stay in Galveston

Budget: Beachtree Motel

Mid-Range: Knights Inn Galveston

Luxury: Four Seasons on the Gulf

Airbnb: Galveston Beach Front Condo

Day Nine and Ten: Houston

USA - Texas - Houston - Saturn 5 Rocket Display at NASA Stennis Space Center Visitors Center

Galveston to Houston is a breezy fifty mile-drive, and won’t take you more than an hour. This is a great way to end your trip, as Houston is one of the largest and most vibrant cities in the US.

It’s also a great way to spend the last few days of your trip if you’ll be flying out of Texas since Houston has a large airport.

While you can make the trip in under an hour, a more scenic route is to jump on a ferry from Galveston to Port Bolivar, and drive up the Bolivar Peninsula until you reach the Anahuac National Wildlife Reserve.

Grab a lunch of freshly-caught fish at Crystal Beach, then take a big loop around Trinity Bay before heading into Houston along the I-10. You’ll get a taste of the bayous spilling over from Louisiana, before enjoying the cultural delights of Texas’s biggest city, and your final destination!

During your last few days in Texas, soak up Houston’s history at the Space Center Houston and learn all about Houston’s role in America’s space exploration.

A Texas coastal road trip is a brilliant adventure and offers an alternative perspective on the Lone Star State. An underrated gem, the Texas Gulf Coast has loads to offer, and this adventure is the best way to experience it!

5 More Things to Do in Houston

Besides Space Center Houston, don’t miss:

  • The Museum of Fine Art
  • Kemah Boardwalk
  • Battleship Texas State Historic Site
  • Market Square Park
  • Buffalo Soldiers National Museum

From Beaumont to Galveston to Corpus Christi and everywhere in between, the Gulf Coast is home to lots of Texas beaches that are perfect for soaking up the saltwater air and the sound of crashing waves.

While, sure, any Texan will be quick to tell you that Texas beaches can’t generally outcompete places like the Caribbean, a quick road trip to the Texas Gulf Coast is often exactly what family vacation calls for!

Whether you’re looking for a state park, a quiet neighborhood beach, or the national seashore that is undoubtedly one of the prettiest beaches in Texas, the Lone Star State offers plenty of opportunities to stick your toes in the sand.

If you’re looking for a new beach to enjoy, here’s where to find the best beaches in Texas!

Rockport Beach

Rockport Beach is located in Rockport, Texas, and draws people from miles around.

This quaint little beach has plenty of areas for you and your family to sit back and relax under one of many cabana umbrellas.

Rockport Beach is Texas’ first and only Blue Wave Beach, meaning it is incredibly clean and free of litter.

Rockport Beach also has fishing piers, playgrounds, and even an area to protect migratory birds, giving you and your family plenty of options while you are visiting.

Rockport Beach costs $10 for a parking day pass, or $40 for an annual pass, which allows you to come and go as you please.

It’s free to enter on foot or by bike.

Rockport Beach is a smaller beach, so planning time to get your space and set up for the day is important.

While you are visiting, make sure to plan some time to explore historic downtown Rockport where you can shop, grab a bite to eat, and enjoy the saltwater breeze off of the ocean.

Padre Island National Seashore

Arguably the prettiest beach in Texas, the Padre Island National Seashore is known for being the longest undeveloped stretch of coastline on a barrier island on the planet.

When visiting the Padre Island National Seashore, you can see seagulls and pelicans flying overhead and watch the tide rise and fall as you dig your feet further into the sand.

Another reason people travel to Padre Island National Seashore is to catch a glimpse at tiny Kemp Ridley Sea Turtles hatching and making their way to the ocean.

Every year, hundreds of these tiny turtles find their way into the ocean with the protection of volunteers who keep predators away and ensure they have a safe path.

Padre Island National Seashore protects miles and miles of land that includes a variety of birds, tidal pools, and more.

When you visit this beach, you are sure to find some ocean wildlife in its natural habitat all the while making some incredible memories with your friends and family.

For non-Texans coming down to visit, keep in mind that the Padre Island National Seashore is located on the less-developed North Padre Island, not popular South Padre Island (which also has beautiful Texas beaches to visit–more on that in a bit).

There are no fees or permits required for Bryan Beach and we also allow overnight camping – come play and stay for FREE!

We got Rockport beach 4x a year. We were there in March 2021and beach was $10 a day or $40 for an annual pass.

Thank you, Debra! Updated to reflect the change.

Where is Isla Blanca Beach.

It’s on South Padre!

Is the 10 dollars or 40 dollars per person or is it per family?

It’s a parking fee, so per car. 🙂

Crystal Beach is the best kept secret in Texas. After driving on the beach to set your EZ up & enjoy the day on the beach you can go to Stingaree restaurant & Marina on the bay side to enjoy some of the best seafood in the state. Also Steve’s Landing for good food & atmosphere. Ship’s Wheel for live music & dancing on the Peninsula.

Surfside Beach (and extended Brazoria County Beach) allows vehicle access, overnight camping, and open fires – including fireworks during legal time-frames. They just require an annual pass that can be purchased at multiple places in town (e.g. any gas station). On holiday weekends, the traffic gets horrible, but get there early, stay late, and it’s great. Bring your own bathroom though, because there are none, and the cops will ask where you’re “going.”

14 Gorgeous Texas Beaches To Visit During Winter

places to visit on texas coast

  • Activities and Interests

  • Winter Travel

Texas has 367 miles of coastline. It offers miles of remote, shell-studded beaches, mangrove marshes, mountainous dunes, and tidal salt flats. You’ll find beaches with hundreds of beach house vacation rentals, water sports activities, and deep-sea fishing charters. And winter is the best time to explore Texas beaches, when the crowds are sparse and the weather is moderate, in the low 70s.

I’ve explored beaches from the tip of Texas at Boca Chica to Corpus Christi, Galveston, and up the twisted oaks and salt domes of High Island toward Louisiana. Here are my favorite Texas beaches to visit during winter — listed geographically, south to north.

Starbase at Boca Chica Beach.

1. Boca Chica Beach

At the very tip of South Texas, Boca Chica Beach lies about 23 miles east of Brownsville, where Highway 4 dead-ends at the Gulf of Mexico. Mangrove marshes, clay dunes, and tidal salt flats surround the eight-mile beach at Boca Chica, a national wildlife refuge. Rustic and remote, the area is perfect for bird watching, fishing, swimming, and surfing. The Kemp’s ridley sea turtle comes ashore to nest in spring and summer.

These days, you might hear a rumble or two from Elon Musk’s SpaceX South Texas Launch site at Boca Chica, called Starbase . NASA selected Musk’s Starship to be the lunar lander in the future Artemis Program; Musk’s future goal is Martian exploration.

Pro Tip: Travel to the mouth of the Rio Grande to see the border wall extend about 30 feet out into the ocean.

Starbase at Boca Chica Beach

2. South Padre Island

South Padre Island is the number one beach vacation destination on the Texas coast. The 34-mile-long barrier island hosts beachfront hotels, condos, vacation rentals, RV parks, plus deep-sea or bay fishing. Enjoy family-fun water activities like surfing, diving, snorkeling, parasailing, sailboat rides, jet skis, a dolphin watch cruise, and anything else you can dream up.

If you are looking for solitude and peace, wintertime is a great time to visit when the weather is in the high 60s and the low 70s. The peak season is March during spring break and summertime when school is out. The water here is clean and aqua clear, and if you didn’t know any better, you’d think you were in Cancun or Cozumel.

Pro Tip: From Brownsville, take Highway 48 across the bridge to South Padre Island.

3. Padre Island National Seashore

The most extended undeveloped barrier island globally, Padre Island National Seashore separates the Laguna Madre, one of the world’s saltiest lagoons, from the Gulf of Mexico. Padre Island National Seashore protects more than 70 miles of majestic coastline, massive dunes, prairies, tidal flats, and wildlife. The area is the protected nesting ground for the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle and a sanctuary for more than 380 bird species.

Winter is the time to visit, when daytime temperatures are low to mid-70s and people are sparse. Camping is available at five campgrounds on a first come, first served basis, permit required, with no RV hook-ups available.

If you’re looking to visit during summer, check this NPS resource for hatchling Kemp’s ridley sea turtle releases between mid-June and August.

Texas beach.

4. Mustang Island State Park

Mustang Island is an 18-mile-long barrier island near Port Aransas, east of Corpus Christi. A state park with five miles of spectacular sandy beach, it’s a great place to swim, surf, build a sandcastle, fish in the bay, birdwatch, camp, and kayak. Camping is available at 50 primitive drive-up sites or 48 sites with water and electricity, restrooms, and showers with hot water.

The Mustang Island Paddling Trail for kayaks and canoes has some of the best shallow-water fishing in the state.

Pro Tip: You can access the park from both Corpus Christi and Rockport.

5. Corpus Christi Beaches

The downtown Corpus Christi McGee Beach along scenic Shoreline Boulevard is within walking distance of several hotels and restaurants. Rent a cabana, umbrella, and chairs, or bikes and scooters.

Just a short drive across the Harbor Bridge, North Beach anchors the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington with a place to walk, skate, or cycle on the promenade.

Editor’s Note: Perk up at the mention of an aquarium? The Lone Star State has plenty to offer, and the Texas State Aquarium made Janie’s list of the best aquariums in Texas .

Whitecap Beach is a mile-and-a-half-long beach in Corpus Christi on North Padre Island. It’s great in the winter due to the milder weather, but note that from April to August, the undeveloped and unspoiled beach offers the best surfing.

North and South Packery Jetty Beach is a sandy oasis between Mustang Island and Padre Island, with jetties extending out into the azure water. The south side is less crowded, making it a wonderful place to fish, swim, snorkel, and build sandcastles.

Port Aransas Beach.

6. Port Aransas Beach

Famous for its pirates in the 18th century, Port Aransas , a small town on Mustang Island, northeast of Corpus Christi, swells to 60,000 during its peak season: spring break and summer. Avoid those peak seasons by coming here in the winter.

Port A boasts 18 smooth miles of beach where you can find your perfect beach house. Dive in and experience surfing, jet skiing, pirate cruises, sunset sails, parasailing, or deep-sea fishing. Learn about sea turtle rehabilitation, bird refuges, kayaking, and Texas SandFest , the annual sandcastles competition.

Pro Tip: Cook Your Catch locations like Fins Grill & Icehouse or Castaways Seafood and Grill will cook your freshly caught, freshly cleaned fish and prepare it to your liking, a unique “sea-to-table-experience.”

7. San Jose Island

A short ferry trip from Port Aransas, San Jose Island is a privately owned, uninhabited wildlife sanctuary. St. Jo’s beach is 21 miles long with fine white sand and lots of colorful shells, and it is known as The Fishing Capital of Texas. Catch a passenger ferry from Fisherman’s Wharf in Port A and fish from the rocky edges of the North Jetty. Catch redfish, flounder, speckled trout, or charter a deep-sea fishing boat from the pier.

Texas beach.

8. IB Magee Beach

On the northern end of Mustang Island, on the other side of the rolling dunes of Port A, is IB Magee Beach . You’ll find almost 3,500 vacation rentals in IB Magee Beach Park. The park offers 75 RV sites with water and electricity, complete with hot showers and restrooms. Don’t miss the 1,240-foot-long, lighted Horace Caldwell Pier on the northern point of Mustang Island, perfect for 24-hour fishing.

9. Rockport Beach

Texas’ first Blue Wave Beach, Rockport Beach is certified by the Clean Beaches Coalition, a network of organizations and individuals committed to promoting clean, healthy, and well-managed beaches worldwide. Rockport is famous for great fishing, bird watching, and beautiful coastal climate.

On this mile-long sandy beach, you’ll find 65 quaint picnic areas with shade, grills, picnic tables, and volleyball courts.

a bay side in Texas.

10. Matagorda Island

Matagorda Island Wildlife Management Area is a 38-mile-long uninhabited island with a Texas Parks and Wildlife outpost. Today, traverse the bay and the 2.5 miles across the island to the 1852 historic lighthouse, standing 91 feet above sea level, that guided ships through Pass Cavallo on their way to Indianola.

The island is home to 19 threatened bird species, migratory birds, white-tailed deer, alligators, and other wildlife. Bring your water and supplies to the Sunday Beach area, where camping is allowed.

11. Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach at Freeport stretches four miles between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Gulf of Mexico. It has vacation rentals, hotels, motels, and beach houses. Visit the crabbing pier and the Freeport jetties, where you can watch the large ships come and go or toss in a line and do some night fishing.

Beach scene, Galveston.

12. Galveston Island Beaches

Galveston Island is Texas’ charming retreat, 50 miles south of Houston, where we celebrate Mardi Gras, Dickens on the Strand in December, visit historic architecture like Bishop’s Palace and the largest collection of Victorian homes in America. The cruise docks host Royal Caribbean, Disney, and Carnival cruise lines. You can find hundreds of beach houses and vacation homes for rent along the 27-mile island. I like to visit Galveston beaches in the off season (not spring break or the summer) when the beaches are not crowded and you can find seashells on the beach.

San Luis Pass Beach , a 15-acre bay park, once known as the back door into Galveston Bay for pirates and smugglers, is located west of the Brazoria-Galveston County toll bridge at San Luis Pass. You’ll find full-service RV camping, cabins, restrooms, boat launch, and paved parking.

Jamaica Beach , with drive-on-the-beach access, makes a beach trip very easy with grandkids. Choose from a wide selection of vacation rentals on or near the beach.

Pirates Beach features over 700 beach properties near Galveston Island Country Club facing the gulf.

Seawall Urban Park , America’s longest continuous seawall, offers a 10-mile shoreline. You can bike, peddle cars, swim, make sandcastles, and people watch.

Beachtown Development is a quiet, uncrowded beach that is safe for swimming. Victorian homes offer many rental choices, plus stunning scenery. Access to Moody Gardens and Schlitterbahn make this beach a hidden oasis.

Stewart Beach is a family-friendly beach Between the seawall and Broadway Avenue, with lifeguards on duty. Access an outdoor pavilion, chair, and umbrella rentals. The Pleasure Pier has a colossal roller coaster, rides, and games. Stay nearby at the historic Hotel Galvez , my favorite.

East Beach , the only public beach where alcohol is allowed, hosts concerts, festivals, and a boardwalk. A pavilion, playground, and restrooms make this beach kid-friendly too.

Pleasure Pier in Galveston.

13. Crystal Beach On The Bolivar Peninsula

Stretching seven miles along Texas State Highway 87, you can drive on Crystal Beach . Enjoy free camping, fishing, birding, and hunting for shells during, free from the summer crowds. Stay at beachfront and bayside vacation rentals during the off season, when rentals are easily available. Access Crystal Beach on Bolivar Peninsula via the Bolivar free ferry for a trip across the bay from Galveston. There are no ferry lines during the off seasons, and you might see your ferry escorted by dolphins.

14. High Island

High Island is a quiet east Texas town, on the edge of a vast marsh, with twisted oaks clinging to the rims of salt domes 40 feet above the gulf. To the east, long, shell-studded beaches stretch 100 miles into Louisiana. There are four bird sanctuaries — the largest is Smith Oaks, with four lakes and nests of herons, egrets, and roseate spoonbills.

Things to Do in Texas Gulf Coast

Texas's coast stretches for more than 350 miles between Louisiana and Mexico. It's predominantly flat and sandy, with large bays and skinny barrier islands tripling the amount of shoreline. The sand varies in color from white to light brown, and the water is warm and calm and usually a dull green. It can be cloudy on some days and quite clear on others, especially the farther south you go.

Though the natural features along this coast are fairly uniform, there is one notable difference: rainfall. The eastern and central parts of Texas are much wetter than South Texas. Rivers, bayous, and creeks pour into estuaries and marshy wetlands, creating a fertile habitat that supports a broad range of wildlife. Along this coast are several national wildlife refuges, the most famous being the one at Aransas, which is the winter home of the endangered whooping crane. South of Corpus Christi the land is arid, which makes the water clearer, especially on the protected side of the barrier islands. South Padre Island has more sand dunes than the barrier islands to the north, and water on its sheltered side is extrasalty because evaporation removes water faster than it is added.

In the summer of 2008, Hurricanes Dolly and Ike hit the northern and southern parts of this coast but left untouched the central coast, the area around Corpus Christi. Galveston will need time to recover from the effects of Ike, which caused changes that in some ways might be permanent. South Padre Island did not suffer as much from Dolly, and is almost fully recovered, with the exception of one or two small hotels.

There are many things for visitors to do on the Texas Gulf Coast, including all manner of watersports. Birding and eco-tourism also attract many visitors. And, thanks to its short and mild winters, the Gulf Coast attracts a lot of "winter Texans" who come fleeing the cold in their native states.

The largest cities on this coast are Corpus Christi and Galveston. Both offer the visitor a choice of recreation, lodging, and dining options. Farther south, at the very tip of the state, is the town of South Padre Island, the best-known purely tourist resort in the state. We cover everything from Galveston to South Padre Island, but not the bit of coast between Galveston and Port Arthur, at the Louisiana border (and believe me, nobody considers the Port Arthur coast for its recreational activities).

At night, camp (or glamp) under the moonlight to see why Big Bend is one of the best dark sky parks in the country.

While here, save time for wildlife watching, as the area is a haven for various bird and sea turtle species, particularly in spring and fall.

Easy to reach by ferry from Port Aransas, this former ranch is now a prime beach destination. Because San José Island is privately owned, the island's only publicly accessible land is its 21-mile stretch of unspoiled sand situated below the vegetation line. Top Things To Do In Corpus Christi For All

Use these suggestions for things to do in  corpus christi –  texas’ gulf coast capital..

L iving in a landlocked city has me always dreaming about a getaway. I recently visited Texas’s Gulf Coast Capital. As a native Texan, this was not my first visit to the area, but it had been over a few years. Corpus Christi still has sleepy beach town vibes, but much has changed. You’ll want to check out these things to do in Corpus Christi if you’re planning a vacation soon.

With a creative cocktail scene, fresh seafood, colorful street art & murals, and miles of pretty beaches, Corpus Christi makes a great vacation for solo travelers, couples, and families. There are many tourist attractions for all to enjoy. Corpus Christi is the largest coastal city and a short drive from

I’ve put together some tips and itinerary suggestions for visiting Corpus Christi, including what to do at the beach and where to eat, drink, and activities for when you want to get out of the sun.

Visit Corpus Christi sponsored my visit. All opinions are my own.

Padre Island National Seashore

Top things to do in corpus christi.

Corpus Christi has six islands, nine beaches, and eighty-plus miles of coast. Each beach has in common the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and pretty sunsets.

For the sun seeker and beach lover who wants to escape the city, book a stay on North Padre or Mustang Island. North Padre Island is the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world. There are sixty miles of pretty beaches to explore.

Mustang Island State Park

Mustang Island State Park  is an eighteen-mile-long barrier island. This park is a main Corpus Christi attraction. Go to Mustang Island for the pristine beaches and wildlife adventures, spotting turtles, dolphins, birds, and shallow-water fishing spots. Ranger programs like stargazing and birding are also available. You can camp on the beach here and even drive your vehicle onto the beach.

Travel Tip:  You’ll need a beach parking permit.

A little south of Mustang Island State Park is the Padre Island National Seashore, 130,000 acres of dunes, grasslands, and beaches, in short, a paradise on the Texas coast. Check out the  Grasslands Nature Trail  and learn about the plant and animal life that inhabit the dunes and marshlands.

Birdwatching

Are you a bird watcher? With over 200 bird species migrating annually to this coastal city, the city of Corpus Christi has been named the “birdiest city in America” multiple years in a row by the Coastal Bend Audubon Society. Big Bird Island at Padre Island National Seashore is the perfect place for birdwatching, and campsites are available.

Sea Turtle Release Program

If you go at the right time of year, the park has a visitor program allowing you to watch freshly hatched sea turtles as they are released into the Gulf of Mexico. Call the Hatchling Hotline for updates on the next releases. (361)949-7163.

Windsurfing

Padre Island National Seashore is also one of the top destinations in North America for windsurfing. Check out  Worldwide Windsurfing  for paddle board, kayak, and windsurfing classes.

Outdoor Activities (On The Beach)

Horse rides on the beach.

Horses On The Beach  can accommodate all ages and levels of experience. There’s a guide who helps everyone get on the right horse and leads the way to ensure nothing in the path might spook the animals. A ride along the beach was given the thumbs up by my group. Horses on the Beach is open year-round, but hours may be limited in fall and winter.

Though not known as a surfing capital, you can still catch a wave in Corpus Christi. Many people come here to learn at either  Padre Island Surf Camp  or Texas Surf Camp. Both offer private and group sessions. The availability may vary during the winter, so check the website.

Night Rowing on Corpus Christi Harbor

Glow Row  is fun and easy, regardless of your fitness level. The boats are five feet long and three feet across, accommodating two people. If you’re solo, you sit in the back. Equipped with several different light colors and patterns, it’s a fun adventure to paddle around the calm, shallow waters of the harbor with a group glowing in the dark.

The experience is about an hour long, and you’ll paddle about three-quarters of a mile. For perspective, we started and ended at the bridge across from Snoopy’s.

There are so many more  activities on the beach  to consider.

North Padre Island

Places to eat, drink, and hang out are on the island’s north end (North Beach). Sunset Island is where the action is. Check out  Marker 37 Marina  for boat launches and places to pick up fishing gear. This is where all the fishing charters depart.  Tip:  most charters will clean and cook anything you catch.

Snoopy’s Pier is among the most popular spots for dining, drinking, and sunset views and has dining options for casual food and lots of fresh seafood.

Island Joe’s  a cute, colorful place for various java-fueled drinks housed in shipping containers.

Marina Arts District In Downtown Corpus Christi

I loved the vibrant art and culture scene of downtown Corpus Christi, accented by restaurants serving fresh seafood and refreshing cocktails. If you stay near the marina, you can walk to the shops, restaurants, bars, and cafes. The marina area is a great place to walk or jog.

Where the music meets the Bay

Instagram-Worthy Murals

Corpus Christi is awash in art, and murals are everywhere downtown, even on electrical boxes. There’s so much to see – you could spend a couple of hours just walking around looking at the murals. Don’t miss a chance to take your photo with Selina. Another famous face of Corpus Christi is Farrah Fawcett, known for her role in the TV show Charlie’s Angels.

A few not to miss, in my opinion, include the  Farah Fawcett  mural on Water St., the art of the side of  Dokoyo Dauntaun  restaurant (where you should also go for Asian-inspired eats and drinks), the Lotteria on the side of  K-Space Contemporary  (another cool gallery to visit), and Where the Music Meets the Bay at 201 S. Chaparral St.

If you get the chance, the Selena Museum is open and located at 5410 Leopard St.

Chihuahuan Heat by Dennis Blagg

Art Museum of South Texas

The Art Museum of South Texas was designed by Phillip Johnson, with additions designed by renowned Mexican architect Ricardo Legoretta. The building materials are poured concrete blended with aggregate to easily mix with the environment. With sweeping views of the Bay and a large collection of art, sculpture, and artifacts, plus community programs, the museum is a cultural gem on the Bay.

USS Lexington Museum

The world’s oldest naval aircraft carrier is the  USS Lexington . In 1992, it became a Naval Aviation Museum permanently located in Corpus Christi. The flight is two acres with a height of nineteen stories. The USS Lexington offers many opportunities to learn and have fun on board this retired naval aircraft carrier. Escape Rooms, overnight camping, a Pearl Harbor exhibit, and many other activities make the Lexington a fun visit for all ages.

Best Restaurants & Bars In Corpus Christi

Water street market.

This is a cute development with good coffee shops and bars. Try Lucy’s Snackbar for coffee, pastries, wine, and beer. Central Kitchen has fresh oven-baked bread and breakfast and lunch selections. The Executive Surf Club is also located here.

Dokyo Dauntaun

Dokyo Dauntaun  serves classic Asian favorites and inspired cocktails. There are two dining sections, but one is a bit darker, quieter, and sexier.

Restaurant: Elizabeth’s

Elizabeth’s

Located inside the Art Museum of South Texas, Elizabeth’s is a tapas-style dining experience. Combine waterfront views, a great atmosphere, and some of the prettiest cocktails I’ve seen. I highly recommend visiting the museum and then dining here. It’s also a good spot for that Instagram photo op.

Central Kitchen

Water Street Oyster Bar

Water Street Oyster Bar is a long-time favorite in town, with waterfront views and the freshest seafood. Try the raw bar, sushi bar, and cocktail bar. Mix it up.

Executive Surf Club

This club is a popular spot for locals and visitors. They’ve hosted some of the biggest names in music history since opening in 1990. Good food, good vibes, and a good patio, too. The Executive Surf Club has a daily happy hour, weekend live music, and open mic nights.

Bus (Bar Under the Sun)

Housed in a former Greyhound Bus station, this bar and eatery is casual with just the right mix of craft cocktails, games, food, and an outdoor dining area. It’s also family and pet-friendly and open six days a week. Menu items include a classic burger, tuna tostadas, and poblano quesadillas. They also serve Sunday brunch.

The Goldfish Bar

For a great outdoor patio (pet-friendly), great cocktails, wine & beer, head to 724 North Mesquite. Open until 2 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Nueces Brewing Company

A newcomer to Corpus Christi’s thriving brewery scene. Nueces Brewing Company claims old-world brewing techniques and Texas BBQ, which sounds like a good combination to me. There are a few outdoor tables, but most of the seating is inside the spacious former car dealership space.

Corpus Christi is good for anyone who wants a beach vacation without the jetlag and expense of filing across the country and the necessity of a passport.

Insider Tip:  Corpus Christi is very spread out. If you stay downtown, you’ll need a car to visit urban attractions like the USS Lexington, The Texas State Aquarium, and The Art Museum of South Texas, but nothing is very far away. You’ll also need transportation to visit the beaches.

A local’s travel guide to Austin: what to eat, see and do in three days

Standout spots include food truck parks, honky-tonk hangouts and Lady Bird’s wildflower sanctuary

A ustin has become one of the most popular places in the US to move to, and also to visit. Droves of people descend on the city in March for the South by Southwest tech, film and music festival and in the fall for the Austin City Limits music festival. And Austin is one of the top five destinations in the US for bachelorette parties. Don’t let the bachelorettes scare you away, though. Austin is a great place to spend a few days, so long as you do it like a local.

My family and I moved to Austin 12 years ago, after living in New York for many years. I’ve also lived in Washington DC , the San Francisco Bay Area and Philadelphia. Austin has a feel all of its own: it has a world-class music scene, great food that now goes well beyond Tex-Mex and barbecue, Texas history and fun shopping and museums – all with less hassle than bigger cities in the US.

Here’s my guide to a long weekend there. In addition to picks for adults, I’ve included some recommendations for families that our kids (now teenagers) have loved through the years. And I’m vegetarian, so I’ve chosen some of the city’s best veggie eats options. Don’t worry, my meat-eating wife made sure that I included great barbecue choices, too.

Day 1: Pool party & pickles

Start your day with a walk or run on the trail at Town Lake (it’s officially labeled on maps as Lady Bird Lake, but locals refer to it as Town Lake). This 10-mile (16km) trail on both sides of a dammed portion of Texas’s Colorado River (a different Colorado River than the bigger and more famous one) is tree-shaded, beautiful and one of Austinites’ favorite places to exercise. If you have time, walk through Zilker Park, which is right next to the trail. If you have kids, go to the new and very fun playground at Butler Park, complete with a splash pad just up the path from the playground.

Austin was one of the cities that started the food truck scene in the US several decades ago, and now there are more than 2,000 food trucks in the city. Some are located in trailer parks that have multiple truck options and picnic table seating. After your morning at Town Lake and Zilker Park, have lunch at the Picnic food truck park, or the nearby original location of local favorite Chuy’s (the Tex-Mex chain is now expanding throughout the US). Other great lunch options include Green Mesquite and Carpenters Hall .

In the afternoon, go for a swim at Barton Springs Pool . Open year-round, this massive basin measures three acres and is fed by underground natural springs. It’s open throughout the day, and it’s free before 8am and after 9pm.

Head back to your hotel or Airbnb for a rest, and then get ready for dinner. Tonight is casual: barbecue at Terry Black’s , or if you’re vegan, the food truck Rollin Smoke for a fantastic vegan barbecue sandwich made with baby portobello mushrooms, spicy slaw, barbecue sauce and pickles. It’s my favorite vegan barbecue sandwich in Austin (who says you can’t have barbecue if you’re veggie?), and it’s located in a food truck park with beautiful old trees shading the tables. Rollin Smoke has very good meat options, too (I’m told).

A bearded man hands a wrapped meal to a customer from a food truck.

If you have young children, head to Phil’s Icehouse . They have burgers and a full playground where the kids can play before or after dinner. Just don’t put them on the spinning flower after the meal. And be sure to get some ice-cream after dinner at Amy’s Ice Creams , a longtime favorite of Austinites. Amy’s is located next to Phil’s, and it’s so good we had an Amy’s truck serve dessert at our wedding.

After dinner, head out to see some music at one of Austin’s many local music venues. One of our favorites is the Continental Club . There’s a main club downstairs and the intimate Continental Gallery upstairs, where you can see local musicians in a cozy space. Other great venues include C-Boy’s and the new Moody Amphitheater . For full local music listings on any night, check the Austin Chronicle . And if it’s summer, look to see if Blues on the Green has a free concert that night. If you have kids, take them to the free Rock the Park concert series, produced by local radio station KUTX.

Day 2: Breakfast tacos, books & bats

Start your day back at the lake with a rowing workout that’s almost, but not quite, on the lake. Rō Fitness is a local studio that has outdoor rowing classes by the water. It’s way more fun than working out at an indoor studio.

You’ll need fuel after your workout. Grab a breakfast taco at Veracruz or Tacodeli or Tamale House East . Breakfast tacos are an Austin staple (they are to Austin as bagels are to New York), and all three of these places have delicious options.

Today is a shopping day. Start out at BookPeople , one of the greatest bookstores in the US. It’s locally owned and independent, but the size of a superstore. BookPeople also dares to take a stand on issues, including being one of two bookstores that recently sued Texas state officials over a newly passed book ban law. It has an excellent kids section, and organizes live readings by kids’ authors.

After you’ve gotten your book fix, head across the street to Waterloo Records , one of the best record stores in the US. Waterloo carries new and used vinyl, CDs and merchandise from rock to jazz to local Texas music. For more shopping options, head over to the stores along South Congress Avenue and South First Street (including Roadhouse Relics , a neon art store and gallery that is one of our favorites), and if you want to go thrifting, our teens say Austin Pets Alive Thrift and Texas Thrift are the best.

Steve Sachs shops for music at Waterloo Records in Austin.

After all of the shopping, it’s time for lunch. If you’re near BookPeople and Waterloo, head over to Soup Peddler, a local place for homemade soups, smoothies and fantastic grilled cheese sandwiches (trivia: Soup Peddler got its name because the founder started out delivering homemade soup by bike before opening full store locations). Or if you’re near South Congress and South First, go to the food trucks on South First or Underdog or Fresa’s .

As you’re heading back to rest up, grab an ice-cream at Amy’s, a gelato at Dolce Neve or cupcakes at Sugar Mama’s .

Some good dinner options for tonight include Loro , Suerte or Este . And if you’re looking for a vegetarian option, one of my favorite veggie restaurants is Bouldin Creek Cafe . It’s casual, with a great menu that includes vegan chips and queso. If it’s nice out, take a seat on the patio.

Tonight’s activity could be going to see the bats at the Congress Street Bridge. Austin has the largest urban bat colony in North America, and in season they live in one of the bridges that crosses the Colorado River (they migrate to Mexico in the cooler weather). Bat-watching is a lot more fun than you might imagine from horror movies (and these bats look more like birds than vampire bats). If you’re not in the mood for bats, head to the legendary Broken Spoke . Get there early for dance lessons, then hoof it at this classic Texas honky-tonk.

Day 3: Live oaks & Lady Bird wildflowers

It’s your last day in Austin, and it’s a good one for visiting a museum. Some of our favorites include the Bullock Museum to learn all about the history of our state (bonus fact: Texas was once its own country , and some people want it to be its own country again ). If you’re a fan of 1960s history, visit the excellent LBJ Presidential Library , which is the home of the 36th president’s papers. It has good exhibits on the US civil rights movement and 1960s US history in general. Another excellent museum option is the Blanton Museum of Art , or you could tour the Texas capitol (Austin is, after all, the capital of Texas). If you’re a nature fan, head to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center . And if you have kids, the Thinkery is an excellent children’s museum.

For lunch, it’s time for more barbecue (you’re in Austin, don’t fight it). Two terrific barbecue trucks are Mickelthwait and LeRoy and Lewis . And LeRoy and Lewis has another of my favorite vegetarian barbecue options: cauliflower burnt ends.

In the afternoon, head back to Town Lake. This time, get out on the water by renting a kayak, stand up paddleboard or paddle boat (a kid-friendly option). If you have time and energy for a drink, head over to the ABGB for happy hour. They have a great beer selection, lots of outdoor seating and local bands playing music.

Two kayaks float in a large body of water.

For your farewell dinner, a few of our favorite restaurants that are a bit on the fancier end are Hestia , Uchi or the Lenoir wine garden, where dinner is served under live oak trees more than a hundred years old. And for a fantastic vegan option, go to Fabrik for a seven-course vegan tasting menu. You’ll need a reservation well in advance (they’re currently booking four to six weeks out). And for your final night in Austin, head out to another music venue. Or if you have kids, take them to the Austin favorite Peter Pan Mini Golf , which has been around for 75 years, or check Do512 Family for family events that are happening the dates you’re in town.

Question Time

When is the best time of year to visit austin.

There’s no dispute: it’s hot in the summer in Austin . A great time to visit is between October and May. From June through September, many days will be over 100F. If you’re here in the summer, spend lots of time at the Barton Springs pool.

Is Austin expensive?

Austin hotels can be expensive during big events like South by Southwest or the Formula One weekend. But for most dates, it’s less expensive than larger cities like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Will I need a car to get around Austin?

Most of the places that I’ve recommended are within walking distance from downtown. You can also rent bikes and scooters to get around. Austin’s public transportation is primarily through local buses, which can take you further out if needed. And car-share options are easy as well.

Where are the cicadas? Use this interactive map to find Brood XIX, Brood XIII in 2024

In a few weeks, over a dozen states will be abuzz as trillions of periodical cicadas will emerge from their yearslong underground stay.

Broods XIX and XIII will emerge in a combined 17 states, mostly in the Midwest and Southeast, in a rare, double brood event . These two broods last emerged together 221 years ago, and after this year are not predicted to do so again until 2245.

Once conditions are right, the two broods will emerge in massive numbers to feed, make noise, mate and die. Here's what to know about where to find the 13-year Brood XIX and the 17-year Brood XIII.

2024 double cicada broods: Check out where Broods XIII, XIX will emerge

The two cicada broods will emerge in a combined 17 states across the Southeast and Midwest, with an overlap in parts of Illinois and Iowa. They will emerge once soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, expected to begin in mid-May and lasting through late June.

The two broods last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.

What is a periodical cicada?

Both the 13-year Brood XIX and the 17-year Brood XIII are periodical cicadas, which emerge every 13 or 17 years across North America. They differ from annual cicadas, which emerge every year.

You may remember the last periodical brood to emerge in huge numbers: the 17-year Brood X that was found in 2021 throughout the Midwest and Eastern Seaboard.

Annual cicadas, which are dark green to black with green wing veins, are  typically larger than periodical cicadas , which are recognizable for their red eyes, red legs and red wing veins, according to North Carolina State University Extension.

Periodical cicadas emerge earlier, usually in mid-to-late May as opposed to annual cicadas in July and August. According to North Carolina State University Extension, annual cicadas begin mating, " singing conspicuously " and lying eggs about two weeks after they emerge. Their first nymphs will fall to the ground and begin feeding on roots under the soil, and fully-developed nymphs will emerge two years later and molt into adults.

Above ground, periodical cicadas have a similar life cycle, appear in much larger numbers and are much louder. At the end of their season, the next generation of nymphs move underground and remain for either 13 or 17 years.

According to an earlier report from USA TODAY, historical weather data from 1991 to 2020 indicates that a typical Atlantic hurricane season features around 14 tropical storms, seven of which intensify into hurricanes.

But an early forecast from hurricane experts at the University of Pennsylvania predicts the possibility of up to 33 named storms this season; Texas falls second only to Florida in terms of the number of hurricanes making landfall.

Let's hope that only a fraction of the named storms on the list are used this season.

Here is the list of names for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season

The names are given out in alphabetical order, and they alternate between names traditionally assigned to males and females. Each new storm gets the next name on the list. There are no Q, U, X, Y or Z names because of the lack of usable names that begin with those letters.

Only six lists of names actually exist, meaning the list rotates every six years unless a hurricane resulted in significant damage, injuries or fatalities, in which the name is retired.

Two newly selected names joined the list for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season in place of Florence and Michael.

The category 4 Hurricane Florence hit North Carolina in August 2018, killing 53 people, while Hurricane Michael was the first category 5 on record to impact the Florida Panhandle, leaving 74 dead in October 2018. It was also the first category 5 hurricane to make landfall in the contiguous United States since Andrew in 1992.

Here's the list.

Which hurricanes in Texas now have retired names?

Tied for the costliest hurricane in U.S. history, Harvey is now retired from the list of Atlantic hurricane names and was replaced with Harold. The category 4 hurricane that hit Southeast Texas in October 2017 resulted in 107 fatalities and $125 billion in damages.

Ike, a category 4 hurricane that hit near Galveston and Louisiana, led to the deaths of 195 individuals in 2008. The new name in its place is Isaias.

In our neighboring state of Louisiana, Katrina — the category 5 storm that hit New Orleans in 2005 and killed more than 1,800 — was replaced by Katia.

When is the Atlantic hurricane season?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, although storms have formed as early as January and as late as December.

The  National Hurricane Center  starts issuing its  daily tropical outlook  reports on May 15. If a storm forms before then, a special report is issued for the life of that storm.
