Best of Western USA

10 days | hit the best of the west on this usa road trip to national parks, canyons and glitzy cities.

Woman in Monument Valley during a Navajo guided tour, Utah, USA

Take a ten-day road trip from the glitzy hub of Las Vegas to the trendy San Francisco, stopping at national parks, deep canyons, fascinating landscapes and small towns along the way. Start with Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon hikes, kayak across Lake Powell, discover the iconic Monument Valley with a Navajo guide then hit the famed Grand Canyon for an epic sunset and a walk along the rim. Visit the Kelso Dunes and hear them sing, then visit the towering sequoias – some of the oldest trees on Earth! Your last stop is the incredibly diverse lands of Yosemite National Park, where you’ll stargaze with a local naturalist and walk the best trails with an expert trip leader.

Trip overview

  • Marvel at one of the nation’s greatest national parks, The Grand Canyon, and walk along the rim, hike into the canyon or just soak up the expansive views.
  • Kayak across the waters of Lake Powell, weaving your way past fascinating rock formations as your leader shares stories of the lake’s history.
  • Hike through the varied landscapes of Zion National Park, taking in views of massive canyon walls and red sandstone cliffs as you go.
  • Learn about the culture and history of Monument Valley during a Navajo guided tour, followed by a traditional homecooked, family-style Navajo lunch.
  • Experience world-famous Yosemite National Park, taking in the breathtaking scenery as well as the pristine night sky as you go on leader-led walks both day and night.
  • Walk among the towering timber of Sequoia National Park and see General Sherman, the world’s largest tree by volume, along with the other soaring sequoias that make up the Giant Forest.
  • Some of the best scenery in Yosemite, Zion and Sequoia is found on hikes. So, while this trip doesn't require a high level of fitness, it’s essential to be at least moderately fit if you want to partake in all activities. You’ll also need to be prepared with hiking shoes, a water bottle and a day pack.
  • You’ll be travelling to desert and mountainous regions where the temperature can vary greatly from day to night. Make sure you pack the appropriate clothing for all weather.
  • This trip includes time spent travelling in a vehicle with your group. Extra space can be tight, and conditions may feel a little cramped. It’s all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. Please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.

Welcome to Las Vegas! The real wild west is home to some of the USA’s most incredible scenery. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 8 am. Then, you’ll hop aboard a private van. Get to know each other over a picnic lunch, then venture into the stunning landscapes of Zion National Park. Join your leader for a guided hike, then spend the night in Springdale – known as the gateway to the park.

  • Hotel (1 night)
  • Zion National Park - Walks

Please make your own way to the hotel lobby to meet your leader at 8 am this morning. It’s recommended you append an extra day or two in Vegas so you have plenty of time to get there.

Your total travel time today is approximately 3 hours.

The exact trail we hike in Zion will depend on the group's interest and ability, and will typically be either the Emerald Pools trail, or the Watchman trail. The hiking is easy to moderate with a distance of approximately 3 miles/4.8 km with 350 ft/107 mt of elevation gain.

After breakfast this morning, it’s time to make tracks for Bryce Canyon National Park – make sure your camera is ready to go, as some of the views you’ll come across today are truly out of this world! Take a short drive in your private vehicle, then spend the morning hiking through the epic landscapes of the park. Walk along the canyon rim and marvel at hundreds of unique sandstone towers, known as hoodoos, that jut out from the natural amphitheatre. Relax while you enjoy a picnic lunch and take in your magnificent surroundings, then hike down into the canyon for a closer look at the fascinating hoodoos. Then, drive on to the town of Page, where you’ll spend the night.

  • Bryce Canyon - Leader-led Walk

Your total travel time today is approximately 5 hours.

Today's hiking distance is 3 miles (4.8 km) with 450 feet (137 m) of elevation gain.

Bryce Canyon is situated at 8000 ft (2440 m) above sea level. You can expect cooler temperatures, thinner and dryer air than elsewhere on this trip. Make sure you stay hydrated while hiking in the park.

Journey south this morning, driving through more spectacular scenery before arriving at Lake Powell. This gorgeous reservoir is certainly a sight to behold from the shore but to really appreciate it, you’ve got to get on the water. Jump in a kayak and paddle across the water’s surface, weaving your way through remarkable rock formations while your leader regales you with stories of the lake’s history. Back on dry land, set out for a gentle walk along Horseshoe Bend, taking in beautiful views with every step. This afternoon there is an option to visit Antelope Canyon before returning to Page for the evening.

  • Horseshoe Bend Visit
  • Lake Powell - Kayaking
  • Page - Antelope Canyon Tour - USD70

You will get wet during the kayaking excursion, therefore we recommend wearing a swimsuit and water shoes/sandals, or bring a change of clothes and shoes with you on this day.

During November and December, you may be unable to kayak on Lake Powell. There will be a local slot canyon walk included when kayaking is not possible. This hike does involve soft sand, stairs and ramps, so it’s best to wear closed-toe shoes.

ANTELOPE CANYON: Since this tour is very popular and tends to sell out, we recommend you pre-book your space. You can book any time slot 2pm or later. Please book the Lower Antelope Canyon Hiking Tour here: https://www.antelopelowercanyon.com/tours/

Start the day with a drive to Monument Valley – one of the world’s most iconic sights. If this landscape dotted with towering sandstone buttes looks familiar to you, it’s no surprise – Monument Valley has been the filming location for many famous Western films. More importantly, this is the native land of the Navajo. When you arrive, you’ll transfer from your vehicle to a 4WD and enjoy a Navajo-guided tour of Monument Valley, where you’ll have the chance to learn more about their rich culture and history in the area before sitting down to a traditional homecooked, family-style Navajo lunch. Continue your journey onto the iconic Grand Canyon for some awe-inspiring walks along the rim.

  • Monument Valley - Navajo guided 4x4 Jeep tour including traditional lunch

We aim to experience either sunset or sunrise at the Grand Canyon rim, depending on season. During spring and fall when the sun sets earlier and rises later we typically visit for sunrise on Day 5. During the summer months we visit for sunset on Day 4.

This morning it's time to return to Las Vegas, but first we'll make a stop along Historic Route 66. You’ll have another welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight to meet your new group and leader. Later, maybe head out for dinner with the members of your new group to get to know each other.

Your travel time today will be approximately 4.5 hours.

This is a combination trip, meaning your trip leader and group will most likely change today.

Leaving Sin City in your dust, you’ll road trip across state lines and through the Mojave Desert today, on the way to Mojave National Preserve. Stopping at the Kelso Dunes, you’ll feel a world away from the bright lights of Sin City. The dunes are known for their singing sand which produces a deep, eerie sound. To get the full effect, shove off as much sand as possible from the crest of a dune that hasn’t been walked on for a while and feel the boom in your bones. You’ll then set off around the southern Sierras to Sequoia National Park, settle into your accommodation near the park and head out for an included dinner at a local restaurant.

  • Mojave National Preserve - Kelso Dunes hike

Your travel time today will be approximately 8 hours.

Today is simply about seeing the best of the USA’s Sequoia National Park. You’ll embark on leader-led walks around Sequoia, driving from stop to stop as you get to feel small next to the staggering size of General Sherman, the Giant Forest and other specimens of Sequoia’s towering timber. You may even drive through a tree at Tunnel Log, peer into Tharp’s Log and spot marmots, black bears and recently re-introduced bighorn sheep.

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Sequoia National Park

After breakfast, you’ll hit the highway headed for the world-famous Yosemite National Park. To start, get acquainted with the awe-inspiring Yosemite Valley during a guided hike. Strewn with dramatic waterfalls, gigantic granite outcrops and lush meadows, this is one of the most spectacular spots in the country. Your leader will also teach you about the ecologically diverse landscape along the way. After sunset, you’ll join a Naturalist from the Yosemite Conservancy for a guided stargazing program. The park’s minimal light pollution makes it an excellent place to see the stars while learning about astronomy, constellations and local lore.

  • Yosemite National Park - Stargazing with Yosemite Conservancy Naturalist
  • Yosemite National Park - Entrance Fee
  • Yosemite National Park - Leader-led hike

Your travel time today will be approximately 6 hours.

Today, Yosemite is all yours to explore! In the morning there’ll be leader-led walks around some of the park’s best trails. If it’s a clear day you may also drive up to Glacier Point for a view you won’t soon forget, looking down over the valley and across to the iconic Half Dome. The afternoon is yours to fill how you’d like. You might choose to hike along the breathtaking Mist Trail with its many fabulous views, hire a bicycle and pedal along some of the 12 miles of designated (and flat) path or immerse yourself in the park’s history at the Ahwahnee Hotel. Once you’ve seen the sights, the day will be capped off with a pizza picnic in the park for dinner.

  • Yosemite - Pizza Picnic Dinner

After saying fond farewells to Yosemite, you’ll head west to vibrant San Francisco. After stopping to do a walk over the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, your adventure finishes in San Francisco. No accommodation is provided for tonight, but if you do wish to spend extra time in the City by the Bay, just speak to your booking agent. There’s plenty to keep you busy, whether it’s shopping along the funky Haight Street or making your own escape over to Alcatraz Island.

  • San Francisco - Golden Gate Bridge walk

This trip doesn't allow time to visit Alcatraz, so you'll need to make your own arrangements if you want to see the island prison. Tickets must be booked in advance, as they sell out quickly and numbers are limited.

I've used Prestige numerous times for CDG - Disneyland and cannot fault them at all, communication is always perfect, driver always on time and we even had to amend last minute and they had no problem with it.

author

We booked a transfer CDG - Disneyland there and a few days later back. Both times the drivers were on time and very helpful. Child seats were offered free of charge and the children could even watch a Disney movie (in English) during the ride. Price performance was top and we would book a transfer again anytime.

Day 1: Cliffs of Moher - The Burren - Galway

Cliffs of Moher

They say first impressions are the most important, so we have a simply stunning introduction to Ireland waiting in store for you as your first stop on this 8-day itinerary will be at the world-famous Cliffs of Moher.

Cliffs of Moher

Neither words nor pictures can fully capture the power and grace of the Cliffs.

Rising over 200 meters high and spanning 8 kilometers along the wild Atlantic coast, the Cliffs provide stunning views of the Aran Islands with the ocean crashing below. Your driver-guide will be able to inform you of all the folklore and myths that surround this incredible testament to the beauty of nature.

It is not just the setting of the cliffs of Moher that will blow you away, fans of wildlife and bird watching will want to spend hours here appreciating the Puffins, razorbills, Kittiwakes, and occasional peregrine Falcons that call the area home.

Take a break and enjoy a spot of lunch in the picturesque coastal village of Doolin. Tradition is the name of the game here, so be advised that you will not find any chain restaurants or modern coffee shops in the tiny little village, but your guide will direct you to the best places to enjoy a traditional Irish meal.

Next on your driver-guided tour is The Burren, a region famous internationally for its landscape and flora. Most of the Burren is designated a Special Area of Conservation to protect this extremely unusual habitat of Limestone Pavement, Calcareous Grassland, Hazel scrub, Ash/Hazel Woodland, Turloughs, Lakes, Petrifying Springs, Cliffs, and Fen.

The word “Burren” comes from the Irish word “Boíreann” meaning a rocky place. An invading Army Officer once said, “here there is not water enough to drown a man, wood enough to hang one, nor earth enough to bury one”.

Arrive at your Accommodation in Galway

Your driver will take you to the stunning little coastal village of Galway for your evening meal and accommodation for the night. Before checking in for the evening, your guide will be happy to tell you where to find the best traditional food and music venues to spend the evening enjoying a Guinness or two!

Day 2: Croagh Patrick Mountain & Westport

croagh patrick mountain Ireland

Beginning with your guide collecting you from your hotel, you will make our way to a historic mountain that takes its name from our Patron Saint after St Patrick was believed to have fasted here for 40 days all the way back in 441 AD!

Croagh Patrick Mountain

Croagh Patrick, nicknamed the Reek, is a 764 meters (2,507 ft) mountain and an important site of pilgrimage in County Mayo in Ireland. It is 8 kilometers (5 mi) from Westport, above the villages of Murrisk and Lecanvey. It is the third highest mountain in County Mayo after Mweelrea and Nephin.

It is climbed by pilgrims on Reek Sunday every year, which is the last Sunday in July. It forms the southern part of a U-shaped valley created by a glacier flowing into Clew Bay in the last Ice Age. Croagh Patrick is part of a longer east-west ridge; the westernmost peak is called Ben Gorm.

To get an authentic flavor of Ireland it is essential to visit some of our villages and mingle with the locals, and small towns don’t come much more charming than Westport in county Mayo.

Alongside getting to know the local folklore, Westport has many ways to spend an entertaining afternoon with your guide, there is the Great Western Greenway, Achill Island, Clare Island, Clew Bay with its 365 Islands, and Westport House. That’s before we even begin to mention the gorgeous scenery, white sandy beach, and of course fantastic choice of restaurants and bars to enjoy before retiring to your Westport accommodation for the night.

prestige western tours

Day 3: County Clare Private Tour

Kylemore Abbey Ireland

This morning after breakfast, you will be picked up by your driver-guide and taken to explore Connemara National Park.

Here you can admire the incredible scenery in a place where rugged mountains dominate the dramatic landscape that covers 3,000 hectares of, scenic mountains, expansive bogs, glorious grasslands, and enchanting woodlands, a place where you will have the chance to see Connemara Ponies, Red Deer, and birds including Peregrine Falcons.

Your first stop in the park will be the Visitor Center where guides will be on hand to provide information about the park including the wildlife within the park and walking trails you can enjoy regardless of your trekking experience.

Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden

Next, it’s the iconic Kylemore Abbey. Kylemore was built in the late 1800s by Mitchell Henry MP, a wealthy businessman, and liberal politician, who, inspired by his love for his wife Margaret, and his hopes for his beloved Ireland, created an estate boasting ‘all the innovations of the then modern age’. Kylemore is now owned and run by the Benedictine community of Nuns who have been in residence here since 1920.

To round off the days traveling, your driver-guide will drop you off at your accommodation in Co Clare.

Day 4: Bunratty Castle, Adare & Dingle Day Tour

Bunratty Folk Park & Castle, Ireland

Today you will get to know some historic Ireland as your driver-guide takes you towards the wonderfully picturesque Dingle Peninsula.

Bunratty Castle

On the way, we will first stop at Bunratty Castle and its Folk Park. Here you will visit the acclaimed 15th century Castle, the most complete and authentic castle in Ireland.

The site on which Bunratty Castle stands was in origin a Viking trading camp in 970. The present structure is the last of four castles to be built on the site. You will take a tour of this iconic fortress; hear and see how the lords and ladies of this castle lived; hear stories of battles and bravery and enjoy stunning views across the idyllic Clare countryside.

The Folk Park, set on 26 acres of unspoiled Clare countryside, is a treat for persons young, old, and in-between, and features over 30 buildings in a ‘living’ village in a rural setting. Farmhouses, village shops, and streets are recreated and furnished as they would have been at “that time” according to their social standing, from the poorest one-roomed dwelling to Bunratty House – a fine example of a Georgian residence that was home to the Stoddarts, the last family to occupy the Castle.

Adare & Dingle

Before we reach the Peninsula your guide will take you to discover Adare, a quite typical village in the Midwest of Ireland. Your driver-guide will take you on a trip to explore the mysterious ruins and churches which surround the village and whisper of its rich history.

Antique shops, galleries, restaurants, and cafes, sit side by side. Make sure to make time for a wander around this magical village, pause in a cozy pub for a well-earned pint, taste the food and see why ‘a hundred-thousand welcomes’ is actually an understatement.

Your driver-guide will deliver you to your accommodation in plenty of time to enjoy the traditional Irish town of Dingle.

Day 5: Slea Head & Dingle Sheepdog Demonstrations Private Day Tour

Slea Head Drive Ireland

This morning after breakfast your driver-guide will collect you from your accommodation and will be on hand to take you to explore all the sights on offer in Dingle and the surrounding area.

Slea Head Drive, one of Ireland’s most scenic routes, takes you on a journey through historic sites, Irish-speaking villages, famous Hollywood film locations with close-up views of the world-renowned Blasket Island, and distant views of the Skellig Islands on the southwestern horizon.

The Slea Head Drive is a circular route, forming part of the Wild Atlantic Way, beginning and ending in Dingle, that takes in a large number of attractions and stunning views on the western end of the Dingle Peninsula.

Sheep Dog Workshop

Now located in the Slea Head Famine Cottages are working sheepdog performances. Visitors can view a local sheep farmer skillfully working his sheepdogs in gathering and controlling sheep movement. This skill has been handed down from generation to generation as sheep have been kept here on Mount Eagle for hundreds of years.

Visitors are also given valuable insights into the sheep farmers’ way of working. Learn how local farmers could forecast the weather long ago, tell the time when many of the poor could not afford a watch, or even how they managed to communicate with relatives living ten miles away.

After exploring Dingle & all it has to offer, your driver-guide will return you to your accommodation for the evening.

Day 6: Muckross House, Torc Waterfall, Killarney National Park Private Day Tour

Killarney Nationalpark

Today your driver-guide will collect you after breakfast and you will make your way to the famously beautiful Co. Kerry. There are many stops along the way,  and when you arrive in Killarney you can enjoy taking a stroll through the streets of this quaint town to enjoy the great pubs, restaurants and enjoy the traditional Irish music on offer.

Muckross House

First is Muckross House. This nineteenth-century Victorian mansion bearing all the necessary furnishings and artifacts of the period is set against the outstanding beauty of Killarney National Park. As a focal point within Killarney National Park, Muckross House is the ideal base from which to explore this landscape.

Torc Waterfall

Following on from this, you will visit the famous Torc Waterfall which is located close to the entrance to Muckross House. From the viewing point, you will have a view over the Middle Lake as well as the falls themselves.

You will marvel at the falls that are a 20-meter high, 110-meter-long cascade waterfall formed by the Owengarriff River as it drains from the Devil’s Punchbowl corrie lake at Mangerton Mountain and sits at the base of Torc Mountain.

Killarney National Park

Killarney National Park is your next destination, located south of Killarney City, in County Kerry in South West Ireland. It stretches along the banks of Lough Leane and Muckross Lake and covers a total area of 102.89 km2.

Killarney is the very first national park to be established in Ireland in 1932, is a very popular tourist attraction, for its diverse nature and amazing scenery. The park is of high ecological value because of the quality, diversity, and extensiveness of many of its habitats and the wide variety of species that they accommodate, some of which are rare. The park was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1981.

The park contains an expanse of rugged mountainous country. This includes the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, the highest mountain range in Ireland.

You will stay in Killarney for your accommodation on this night. You will love walking the streets of this historic little town with its colorful 19th-century buildings.

Day 7: Ring of Kerry & Skellig Ring Road Driver-Guided Day Tour

Skellig

Sure to be a highlight of your Best of the West trip, your driver-guide will collect you from your accommodation in the morning and take you to explore the stunning driving route known as the Ring of Kerry.

The Ring of Kerry is the ring road that follows the coastal contours of Kerry’s Iveragh Peninsula. The Ring is one of Ireland’s most famous circuits, but it’s much more than a simple driving route, the Ring of Kerry is an iconic destination wrapped in stunning visual history.

This scene-stealing route beginning and ending in Killarney takes in all the big hitters – Moll’s Gap, the Torc Waterfall, and the Gap of Dunloe are places you will see, but really, the route itself is so much more than the sum of its parts. Within this 179km of tarmac road, you’ll find that each turn brings a new treat to the eye, from lakes, rivers, and waterfalls to grand houses and castles, and there is really nothing like breathing in the fresh Kerry air as you drink up the incredible views around you.

There is also an established walking path named The Kerry Way, which takes its own route, and a signposted Ring of Kerry cycling path which uses older quieter roads where possible. The Kerry Way roughly follows the scenic driving route of the Ring of Kerry.

As if that isn’t enough for one day, you will also take a trip along the Skellig Ring Road, one of Lonely Planet’s top 10 rated destinations.

From this little-visited 18km stretch of road, you’ll get lovely views of the Skellig islands from most of the coastal stretches on the Ring of Kerry. This small detour off the main ring follows the coast through the villages of Portmagee and Ballinskellig, providing you with great views of the Skellig Islands.

Next, we will take a short detour from the road to the famous mountain pass, the Gap of Dunloe, which slices through the MacGillycuddy Reeks. The narrow road winds through the pass into the Black Valley passing five beautiful lakes.

The glacial valleys of Moll’s Gap are one of the most dramatic views on the Ring of Kerry route. On the road between Killarney and Kenmare, Moll’s Gap boasts the ultimate view of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks Mountain range, the predominant mountain range of the Iveragh Peninsula. It derives its name from Moll Kissane who set up an illicit bar here during the 19th century. Moll’s Gap is the highest point on the Ring of Kerry with a 235-meter climb.

Ladies View is the first viewing point you’ll meet, or the last, depending on which direction you drive around the Ring. Named after Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting who saw it in 1861 and gaped in awe at the majestic valley spreading out before them. Just 16km from Killarney, it provides a panoramic painting of the lakes and mountains of Kerry.

After your Ring of Kerry tour, your driver-guide will return you to your Killarney hotel.

Day 8: King John's Castle - Airport Transfer

King John's Castle

And finally, we reach your last day touring Ireland with us! Today we’ll head for either Shannon or Dublin airport in time for your flight.

If your group chooses to fly out of Shannon Airport, then we could possibly have time to visit the impressive King John’s Castle in Limerick.

King John’s Castle

The castle has a turbulent history dating back to Viking times and has undergone several sieges, battles, and triumphs over its long history, this is one of Limerick’s most iconic landmarks! Here you will discover the stories of ruthless King John, the noble knights, and rebellious natives.

King John’s will bring to life for you close to 1,000 years of dramatic local history. You will explore the courtyard where you’ll get a sense of the bustling activity that took place all those years ago. You will discover a medieval campaign tent, a blacksmiths forge, and scenes from a seventeenth-century siege. The sights, scents, and sounds of the Castle and its environs combine to recreate the atmosphere of the era. On your journey, through King John’s you can expect to see some lively characters as well as getting the chance to visit a state-of-the-art, technologically advanced visitor center.

After you’re tour – you might want to take a break to relax in the café, the perfect place to unwind while enjoying the views of the castle courtyard and the River Shannon before we head to the airport and bid your group Slán leat until next time!

Majestic Alaska (10 Days)

It was an awesome tour. Saw and did so much. I would recommend Trafalgar to tour with. We are booked next year for The Colorful Trails of the SW in September. I want to say our tour director,Tyler Browning, is one of the best guides we have had. He is personable, friendly, caring, very knowledgeable and on top of everything. He is GREAT!

American Parks Trail (Classic, End Denver, 9 Days)

The Tour Director and driver were first class, keeping us both very amused, and very safe. Some of the downsides were due to the weather, at times, which nothing could be done about, so we got on with it. Some of the main downs were due to my naivety, in thinking some facilities (like cash paying taxis from SLC airport; I persuaded a friendly Uber driver to accept cash!) were what I was used to, and that I wouldn't have to re-enter security when changing planes from LHR to SLC, at PHX, even though I was on a connecting, booked, flight, and my baggage had already been labelled for both airports appropriately, at LHR. Altogether, a very good, and memorable holiday, where I visited some parts of the Parks that I visited before, but saw many more, and different sights in them.

Spectacular Alaska!

Our spectacular Alaska trip was very good. The tour guide, Nick, did a good job of making sure everything went well and that our bus rides were not too long. Meals and included excursions were good. Our bus driver, Tamah, did a great job. We were able to visit some wonderful parts of Alaska in a short time and had fun doing so.

It was a great tour. Fantastic scenery and Kirk showed us the lot. We never felt rushed. We made short hikes every day to great view points. We were extremely lucky with the weather.

Enchanting Canyonlands (Classic, 7 Days) Tour

Enchanting Canyonlands (Classic, 7 Days)

I wanted to say excellent, but there is room for improvement. The website could be better. It required passport information with no option for "Not applicable." As a U.S. Citizen traveling in the U.S., a passport wasn't needed, but I continued to get reminders to complete my profile. Fortunately, I got an email assuring me I didn't need the passport, but I suggest updating your website. The descriptions of several days said "relaxed start," but most days, we had to be up early enough to be showered, dressed, and have our suitcases ready for pickup by 6:30 or 7:00 a.m. As an east-coaster, that was fine for me because of the time difference, but normally, I wouldn't call that relaxed. The sites were stunning, the optional activities were great, although one that I wanted to do got canceled due to a storm and there was no way to reschedule. The lodging was great at each stop and the provided meals were excellent. Some of the suggested "on-your-own" spot for meals were not so good. The change of lodging plans at the Grand Canyon was disappointing because we didn't get to see the sunrise at the Grand Canyon or the stars late the night before. Sedona, The Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Bryce Canyon, and Zion National Park were all fantastic, and we were blessed with great weather for most of the trip. Everyone should see these wonders of God's creation.

Spectacular Canyons and National Parks (End Denver, 13 Days, Denver Airport And Post Trip Hotel Transfer) (19 destinations)

It was an enjoyable good for thw value tour. The first night accomodation in Circus Circus was very poor. Other accomations were fair to good. The transportation was good. A little more information about geography and history would be helpful and add to the total experience. All breakfasts and some dinners need to be included to make it hassel free.

Canyon Country featuring Arizona & Utah (Scottsdale, AZ to Las Vegas, NV) (2024) Tour

Canyon Country featuring Arizona & Utah (Scottsdale, AZ to Las Vegas, NV) (2024)

We started the trip in Phoenix, just as the US was beginning to adjust to the effects of the Corona Virus. For the first few days, the main indication of the problem was decreased attendance at the national parks we visited. But by the next to last day of the tour, we had to cut the trip short because Las Vegas was effectively closed. The bus driver and the tour director were excellent, making sure that we stayed safe as the outside world started to collapse. A special thank you to the last hotel we stayed in (the Majestic View Lodge in Springdale Utah). The manager, head chef, and staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and to feed us even though just about everything around was closing.

"The interesting thing about heli-exploring is that our guests can have an emotional experience instead of a sightseeing one. It is the emotion of being able to do something they never believed they would have the opportunity to do. It appeals to their spirit rather than their age and is a most satisfying trip." Welcome to Prestige on the Canadian

The VIA Rail Canadian train journey in Prestige Class is an unforgettable experience that combines luxury, comfort, and adventure as you traverse the majestic Canadian landscape between Vancouver and Toronto. On this classic 5-day train trip you’ll zip past boreal forests, watch the sun set over the endless horizon of the Prairies and wake up to the wonder of the Canadian Rockies.

From the moment you step aboard, you will be transported back in time to the golden age of train travel, where elegance and sophistication were the norm. With panoramic windows that provide stunning views of the changing Canadian landscape, gourmet meals and attentive service from a dedicated team, Prestige Class is the ultimate way to travel by rail across Canada.

Itinerary/Overview

A journey in VIA Rail Prestige class is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before: as the iconic Canadian train chugs along the historic 4466 km route that connects Toronto to Vancouver, you’re treated to luxury class service and amenities.

Welcome to Prestige

As soon as you step onto the VIA train, you’ll be whisked away to a world of slow travel, where the journey is as important as the destination. Are there more efficient ways to get between Toronto and Vancouver? Absolutely! But none will rival the level of service, style and scenery of travel by rail.

You’ll be greeted by your personal concierge with a glass of bubbly to celebrate the start of the trip. During the journey, your concierge will ensure that you have all you need for your comfort and will be the one to make your priority reservations in the dining car, as well as the park car and the panoramic car during peak season.

Your Prestige Cabin

Your home for the journey will be in the Prestige Class car. Inside your spacious cabin, you will find a daytime configuration of a modular L-shaped leather couch facing a huge window. In the evening, your concierge will transform your cabin into a comfortable hotel-style room with a Murphy bed for two that is easy to access from both sides.

Your cabin also includes a private bathroom with a shower, as well as a mini-bar and a flat-screen TV with a good selection of video options so you can sit back and relax with a movie or show.

Food & Beverage in Prestige

In the dining car, delight in the included three gourmet meals a day — each magically created by chefs in the train’s tiny kitchen using locally sourced ingredients. You’ll appreciate the attention to detail in the dining car — with crisp white linens and printed menus — all set against the backdrop of the huge windows that showcase the jaw dropping landscape outside as you dine.

As a Prestige guest, you will not only have priority reservations in the dining car, but you will be treated to a pre-dining appetizer service and all-inclusive beverages (both alcoholic and non) as well as unlimited snacks. Your concierge will be available to assist you with any food or beverage needs.

Things to Do in Prestige

As the Canadian makes its way east or west (depending on your choice of direction), you will be treated to unforgettable changing landscapes that unfold in front of you: rural farmland, lush forests, the rocky outcrops of the Canadian Shield, prairie fields, city lights and the snowy peaks of the Rockies. This is the longest train journey in North America — a bucket-list travel experience for many — and is sure to leave you with lasting memories as you slowly make your way across the country.

As a Prestige guest, you will also have priority seating in the popular Park car, which is located close to your Prestige cabin. This car contains the Mural Lounge, with a bar, the Bullet Lounge and the scenic top-floor Skyline area. This is a great place to meet fellow travellers, read a good book or look out at the ever-changing scenery. You might even spot some iconic Canadian wildlife out the huge windows.

The Canadian journey in Prestige

The journey can be done from Toronto to Vancouver or Vancouver to Toronto — the choice is yours! The train covers 4466 km, linking two of Canada’s biggest cities, with stops in Sudbury, Sioux Lookout, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper and Kamloops along the way. You can splurge and enjoy Prestige Class for the entire journey or split it up.

Want to start your journey in Halifax or continue on to Halifax from Vancouver? While Prestige Class is only available on the Canadian, we are happy to assist you in creating a cross-Canada rail itinerary. Ask us about all the various train route options. Our Rail Experts are on hand to help you make the most of your trip.

‘Fallout’ Finds the Fun in an Apocalyptic Hellscape

TV’s latest big-ticket video game adaptation, from the creators of “Westworld,” takes a satirical, self-aware approach to the End Times.

A man with a scarred face and missing nose wears a cowboy hat and smiles

By Austin Considine

The scream was just right — bloodcurdling, if also very funny — and the practical effects crew had finally found the proper volume and trajectory of the water cannon. The idea was to film what might happen if you ripped a man from the throat of a mutant salamander, exploding its guts like a giant water balloon.

All that remained was to decide what color of bile to slather on the actor (Johnny Pemberton) and on the salamander’s many teeth, which nuclear radiation had transformed into rows of humanlike fingers.

Based on observations made during a visit to the Brooklyn set of “Fallout” in early 2023, Amazon had spared no expense to make the show, the latest genre-bending series from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the creators of “Westworld.” So it was no surprise when Nolan, on set to direct that chilly afternoon, was presented with not one but some half-dozen buckets of bile to choose from, in a variety of revolting hues. He settled on a pukey pinkish yellow.

“This is the closest thing to comedy that I’ve worked on,” he said later by phone. With writing credits on films like “Memento,” “The Dark Knight” and “The Prestige,” Nolan has tended to skew dark. Comically exploding monster guts — this was new territory.

“It’s a lot of fun,” he said.

A fun apocalypse? Amid all the doom and gloom of most sci-fi spectacles and social media feeds? Yes, please.

“Fallout” premieres Wednesday on Prime Video, and at first it may sound familiar to viewers of a certain postapocalyptic HBO hit from last year, “The Last of Us.” Imagine: a sprawling, expensive adaptation of a beloved videogame franchise that features an unlikely duo — a nihilistic old gunslinger with a tortured past and a tough young woman whose mission overlaps with his. Together, they travel a lawless America plagued by criminals, fanatics, killer mutants and trigger-happy survivors.

But where “The Last of Us” had a decidedly serious and heartfelt tone, “Fallout,” in keeping with its source material, is satirical and self-aware, rich with ironic detail. Sets and costumes lovingly blend B-movie conventions from multiple genres, including westerns, horror and Atomic Age sci-fi. The violence is comically over-the-top.

That unlikely duo? The man (Walton Goggins) is a disfigured former western star who, among other things, puts the woman (Ella Purnell) on a leash and tries to hawk her organs. Their overlapping mission? To find a severed head.

“I am still wrapping my head around it to be quite honest with you,” Goggins said during a brief production break on set. He was dressed in the kind of immaculate Hollywood cowboy duds — think golden fringe and a tidy matching neckerchief — that a real cowboy might spit a beer on.

“It’s ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ meets. …” He paused, searched for the perfect comparison. “It’s ‘Strangelove’ meets the ‘Star Wars’ bar.”

Until recently, live-action video game adaptations were mostly a losing proposition for television. “The Last of Us” by most accounts broke the streak . A commercial and critical darling, it earned eight Primetime Emmys in January, and its 24 total nominations included one for best drama.

Such success seemed remote five years ago, when Nolan had his first conversations with Bethesda Game Studios, the company that owns the Fallout franchise. An avid gamer, Nolan had long been a fan. The original game, which debuted in 1997, established the premise: In an alternative America, the postwar optimism and kitschy aesthetics of the Eisenhower Era never ended, only evolved. There was no Vietnam, no Watergate, no Clinton-Lewinsky scandal. Then in 2077, a nuclear war between the United States and China wiped out modern civilization worldwide.

Those who could afford it retreated into vast underground networks of shelters, known as vaults, until it was safe to come out. The game begins in 2161 when a “vault-dweller,” who has never known anything but the Beaver Cleaver-ish culture preserved underground, ventures into the irradiated wastelands around Los Angeles on a vital mission. (Later games travel to other cities and times.)

Several Fallout adaptations had been aborted or turned down over the years, said Todd Howard, Bethesda’s executive producer, who is also an executive producer of the show. After seeing and loving “Westworld,” however, Howard approached Nolan and Joy. He had heard Nolan was a gamer.

“He had clearly played a lot,” Howard said — Fallout 3 especially. “He could speak to it with authenticity and had a view of what made it tick.” (“Fallout 3 was a game that you could play comfortably for 50 to 100 hours,” Nolan said.)

Bethesda’s priorities were twofold: A TV series had to stay true to the lore of the games but also be written like a whole new chapter, same as any game sequel.

“It was very important to us not to have a show that translated one particular game story but that told something original,” Howard said. “The main character in the Fallout series is the world of Fallout.”

Amazon signed on to produce in 2020, part of an overall deal with Nolan and Joy’s production company, Kilter Films. To begin building the Fallout world, Kilter brought in two creator-showrunners: One, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, had written scripts for big adaptations before, including “Tomb Raider” (2018) and “Captain Marvel” (2019); the other, Graham Wagner, was a TV comedy writer, with credits on “Baskets,” “Silicon Valley” and 50 episodes of “Portlandia.”

For them it was a “best of both worlds” situation. They had been given a trove of intellectual property to start with, already popular among millions. But they also had freedom to simply craft a good story without worrying so much about satisfying gamer fan police.

“The fans of the games want to hear us say that we take the I.P. seriously,” Wagner said in a joint interview with Robertson-Dworet. “Of course we do, because we like it. But you don’t want to let that burden make it feel like a job. Because then everyone’s watching you do a job, and then it just feels like work.”

Robertson-Dworet later added, laughing: “We talk a lot about the [expletive] we’re going to eat for the show. It’s going to be either too woke, too fascist, not fascist enough. … ” She trailed off. The possibilities were endless.

In a separate video call, Kyle MacLachlan, who plays a guest role in the show, didn’t seem worried. And he knows something about protective fan bases. (See: David Lynch’s “Dune.” Or David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: The Return.”)

“I think it’s evident, when you look at the sets and the production value and the tone of the show, that they’re making a big effort to try to incorporate the reality of that world,” he said. “It’s a perfect place to put a story.”

For all the new material, fans of the game will find plenty that is familiar about the story. The show’s other male lead, Aaron Moten, plays an initiate of the Brotherhood of Steel, a fanatical warrior faction found in all of the games. (They suit up in Iron Man-like robotic armor that, 219 years after the end of modern civilization, is prone to breaking down.) Though Purnell’s character arrives over 130 years after the events of the first game, she draws heavily from it.

“She goes up to the wasteland, and she finds out that everything she ever believed is a lie,” Purnell said on a video call with Moten. “It makes her start to question everything,” she added. “And she has to make that choice, right? Adapt or die. Who’s she going to be?”

However fans respond to “Fallout,” no one can doubt the creators’ commitment. Back in Brooklyn in early 2023, a set tour with the show’s production designer, Howard Cummings, offered a glimpse of the massive scope. Indoors, a mazelike series of corridors and chambers amounted to a multilevel reproduction of the vaults. Outdoors, a ramshackle junk city included whole buses and the front end of a 747 jet, trucked in from California. The New York production alone had 35 welders working at once, Cummings said.

This was to say nothing of the location shoots in the Utah desert, or on the Skeleton Coast in Namibia , a stand-in for a postapocalyptic Pacific Palisades, all shot on widescreen film instead of digital. (“The power of dragging yourself to a beautiful and remote place to capture that beauty on film, it still works,” Nolan said. “It always works.”) Or of the 360-degree virtual soundstage, made up of thousands of LED tiles — for when you need the location to come to you.

“New York didn’t have one,” Cummings said. “But it does now!”

Unsurprisingly, “Fallout” looks great. Still, all the money in Amazon’s coffers can’t make a show good, and the streamer, which declined to share budget numbers, has reportedly spent hundreds of millions of dollars on large-scale series, like “Citadel” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” that have yet to make much of an impact with viewers or critics. Amid the glut of heavier end-times material out there, it seemed like a refreshing start, at least, that the “Fallout” creators’ goal was to entertain viewers, not pile onto them.

Nolan called making it an “expiating” experience: Coming out of a pandemic, amid global instability and a deterioration of political discourse, you had to laugh sometimes, he said.

“It’s the only way to make it through.”

Because of a surprise programming change by Amazon the night before publication, an earlier version of this article misstated the premiere date of “Fallout.” It is Wednesday, April 10, not Thursday.
