“If we want to make this great State of Pakistan happy and prosperous we should wholly and solely concentrate on the well being of the people and especially of the masses and the poor.”

Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah

Presidential Address to the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan,11 August, 1947

Message from His Excellency Imran Khan The Prime Minister, Pakistan

Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world and a rapidly growing economic sector which is recognized and respected as a major agent of social and economic prosperity in the world today. Such a rapidly evolving phenomenon necessitates a level of policy response which is capable of recognizing its fast paced growth and adaptability to the constantly changing trends and tastes. It is for this reason that the Government has taken the initiative to launch National Tourism Strategy for Pakistan, which will guide the sector for next 10 years (2020-2030).

With this strategy, I reaffirm the government’s commitment to give tourism a priority in the future development of the country both nationally and internationally. This sector has immense potential for growth and possesses the capability to contribute effectively towards economic diversification and social development, considering how our country is endowed with splendid touristic assets such as rich cultural heritage, natural landscapes, religious diversity, traditional folklore and culinary delights. I envision the tourism industry to become a catalyst for employment generation and poverty alleviation, and in the foreseeable future, wish to see every household reap benefits of tourism, directly or indirectly. In addition, the government is focused on improving and creating an enabling environment and also highlight Pakistan’s true image on the world stage. The spirit of tolerance and hospitality is ingrained in Pakistani nation, which can be displayed across the globe through a thriving and open tourism culture. In the immediate and long-term, this strategy will form basis to develop and enhance the tourism sector, enabling it to stand on its own feet in a severely competitive, flexible and diversified international market.

“The Pakistani city of Lahore is one of the Indian subcontinent’s most brilliant gems, yet it remains relatively obscure outside the country – an unexpected pleasure for travelers. With Pakistan enjoying improved security, visitors are starting to rediscover the city’s treasures. As one of the most historically rich, and culturally important cities on the whole of the subcontinent — yet without the curse of mass tourism — it represents one of the most exciting and vibrant travel destinations in the region. .Pakistan finally seems to be emerging from the shadows, back onto the tourist map”

THE MAGICAL WALLED CITY OF LAHORE

punjab tourism development corporation

The Walled City forms the historic core of Lahore was established around 1000 CE.

The fabled Walled City in Lahore, with its ancient mosques, fortifications, gardens and palaces, has long been one of Pakistan’s historical jewels. Most of the 2.6 square kilometre city’s encircling wall and 12 gates were built during the Mughal era. Akbar, during his stay in Lahore, built a brick wall around the old city for defensive purposes. These walls were badly ruined in 1849 when the British replaced with gardens which still exist today. The Walled City rose in prominence when Lahore Fort – was selected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. The Walled City was bestowed with numerous monuments during the Mughal era, with some of Lahore’s most iconic structures being located in it.

two masterpieces from the time of the brilliant Mughal civilization,

The two complexes – one characterized by monumental structures and the other by extensive water gardens - are outstanding examples of Mughal artistic expression at its height, as it evolved during the 16th and 17th centuries. Both of these distinct royal complexes were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1981

Amritsar was founded by Sri Guru Ramdass ji, the fourth guru of the Sikhs in about 1574 A.D. Before the city was founded, the area was covered with thick forests and had several lakes. To start the city the Guru invited 52 traders from different sectors belongings to nearby places like Patti and Kasur to settle here. These families started the first 32 shops in the city which still stand in the street called Batisi Hatta (32 shops). The Guru himself shifted to live among them in the city which came to be called Ramdaspur and has been eulogised in the Guru Granth Sahib.

The construction of Amrit Sarovar from which the city gets its present name was also stared by Sri Guru Ramdass. His successor, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, completed the project and located the Harmandir Sahib in its midst. Later, when Guru Arjan Dev Ji completed the writing of Holy Guru Granth sahib, a copy of Guru Granth Sahib was ceremonially installed in Harmandir Sahib. Baba Buddha Sahib was appointed the First Granthi.
