Wesley Bryan finishes second at Corales Puntacana, earns another start

YouTuber and PGA TOUR winner Wesley Bryan held the 54-hole lead at the Corales Puntacana Championship, and he carded a smooth 68 in the final round at Puntacana Resort & Club’s Corales Golf Course. In a long-awaited return to Sunday contention, the wily veteran met the moment – with a mustache and swagger to boot.

It wasn’t quite enough for a return to the winner’s circle, as Bryan finished solo second to Billy Horschel, who stampeded to a final-round 63 for a two-shot win at 23-under. Yet Bryan, 34, will take plenty of good from the week. Having entered the season on low-level past champion status (this was just his second start of 2024, having missed the cut at the Puerto Rico Open), these 165 FedExCup points will help immensely in the upcoming reshuffle of conditional members.

With a top-10 finish, Bryan also secures a start at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson in two weeks.

“Obviously excited, it was an amazing week, but bummed,” Bryan said afterward. “Definitely encouraged how the golf game was, how it held up under the pressure of a weekend leading a golf tournament. … Today just got beat, plain and simple. … Hats off to Billy.

“I didn't realize there were that many people that watched our YouTube videos down in the Dominican Republic, but that support was amazing. Online it's been great this week. … I feel like we made some more good content from this week and something to build off of professionally playing as well. Looks like we'll have some more opportunities to play throughout the year.”

Bryan’s sole TOUR title came at the 2017 RBC Heritage (ironically also being played this week), shortly after winning three times on the 2016 Korn Ferry Tour en route to Player of the Year honors. Golf came easy for him at the time. It hasn’t always been the same since; he went nearly six years without a top-10 finish on TOUR, a streak that he snapped with a solo sixth at last year’s Puerto Rico Open.

This week, things snowballed upward in a big way. Bryan started fast in Punta Cana with an opening-round, 9-under 63, which he backed up with scores of 69-66 into Sunday’s final round, when he made five birdies against one bogey. The University of South Carolina alum finished in style with a 30-foot birdie at the 72nd hole, followed by congratulations from his wife Elizabeth and their three young children who made the trip.

The Bryans shared a rental house this week with Ben Martin and family, and there was plenty of poolside relaxation to be had. It corresponded with good golf and good memories.

“For the girls to be out here this week, I mean, I could have finished dead last, but for them to be able to see daddy hit a few golf shots and kind of soak in what the atmosphere was I feel like was pretty special,” Bryan said. “For me, just having them out here, it's amazing.”

Bryan wasn’t the only conditional member to secure a spot at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, as fellow TOUR past champion Kevin Tway finished solo third at 19-under to assure another start in two weeks. Tway carded four rounds in the 60s in Punta Cana, notching his first TOUR top-10 since the Texas Children’s Houston Open in fall 2021.

Non-member Peter Kuest also punched his ticket to THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson with a tie for ninth at the Corales. Kuest earned his spot in Punta Cana with a T10 at the Valero Texas Open, into which he Monday qualified, and he has now parlayed that successful Monday into a third start.

Kuest, 25, is making a habit of this practice. Last year, he finished fourth at the Rocket Mortgage Classic to earn a spot at the John Deere Classic, where he finished T17 to earn Special Temporary Membership. This year, he still has plenty of work ahead to reach that mark; he now holds 110 non-member FedExCup points, with the Special Temporary Membership threshold for this season at 263 points (No. 150 on last year’s FedExCup Fall standings).

Nonetheless, Kuest has earned another chance to chase that mark.

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic — Billy Horschel went to the Dominican Republic for the first time in search of momentum and came away with a PGA Tour victory he sorely needed Sunday.

Horschel ran off four straight birdies on the front nine to get in the mix, began to pull away with an eagle on the par-5 12th hole and closed with a 9-under 63 for a two-shot victory in the Corales Puntacana Championship.

“This game of golf is so fickle,” Horschel said. “You can put a lot into it and not get everything you want out of it. I knew ... I had the ability, I had the talent. I had to continue to believe the good stuff was going to come to the forefront.”

Horschel, who started the final round three shots behind, all but sealed it with an 18-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole.

Wesley Bryan, trying to go wire-to-wire, was bogey-free with four birdies and still only one shot behind late in the round. But right after Horschel made his final birdie, Bryan missed a par par putt from just outside 2 feet and fell three behind.

Bryan birdied the 18th for a 68 and was runner-up, which will get him into the AT&T Byron Nelson in two weeks. He was playing on a sponsor exemption. Kevin Tway shot 69 and finished third.

Horschel finished at 23-under 265 and earned $720,000.

He won for the eighth time on the PGA Tour and the first time in nearly two years. This gets him into the PGA Championship next month, and he likely will be in the next $20 million signature event at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Those are the tournaments Horschel, a former FedExCup champion, was used to playing. The opposite-field events are seen as a chance for younger players to get their first win. In the case of Horschel, it was crucial to get some confidence back.

He delivered one of his best closing rounds when he needed it — the four straight birdies starting on the par-3 second hole, a 31 on the front nine, the eagle on No. 12 to seize control and no bogeys over the last 30 holes of the tournament.

It was nearly a year ago at the Memorial that Horschel, the defending champion at Muirfield Village, shot 84 and was near tears talking about how low his confidence had fallen. He missed the FedExCup playoffs for the first time since 2012.

He had shown signs this year with a pair of top 10s, and now has a victory for validation. Along with getting into the PGA Championship at Valhalla, he is assured of starting next year at Kapalua in The Sentry.

Wesley Bryan has a big finish to restore lead at Puntacana on the PGA Tour

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic (AP) — Wesley Bryan went from comfortably leading at the start to needing a big finish at the end Friday in the Corales Puntacana Championship, and he got every bit of that for a 6-under 66 to move back in front of Justin Lower.

Bryan was tied for the lead in the morning when he reached the par-5 seventh hole to begin his eagle-birdie-birdie finish. Lower, playing three groups behind, did well to stay in range with two birdies over the last three holes for a 64.

Bryan, playing on a sponsor exemption, was at 15-under 129 to set the 36-hole tournament record by two shots. It also marked Bryan’s personal best for 36 holes.

He feels he stole a birdie on the par-3 ninth, his final hole, with a 30-foot putt that had what he felt was 10 feet of break.

“Putter is feeling good in the hands and hitting the ball fairly well. And off the tee has been nice,” Bryan said. “Been a good couple of days.”

It has been OK for Lower, too, who already is off to a good start this season with a tie for third in the Mexico Open a month ago.

Lower had a career-best 10 birdies Friday, which tied the tournament record. He had a few wobbles on his second nine that slowed his progress. But he goes into the weekend in a final pairing with Bryan and a comfortable margin over everyone chasing them.

Greyson Sigg twice ran off three birdies in a row for a 65 that left him four shots behind Bryan. The group another shot back included Bill Haas, a former FedEx Cup champion who has gone nine years since his last victory.

Haas’ career was slowed in 2018 when he was the passenger in a car driven by a friend, Mark Gibello, that crashed along the winding Los Angeles streets near Riviera Country Club. Gibello was killed in the crash.

Haas hasn’t been quite the same, and he is hopeful of a big week to restore confidence.

“We all believe in ourselves, but then results is what propels us forward to having a good week the next week and the next week. If you keep having poor results, it’s pretty easy to believe in that,” Haas said. “So it would mean a lot. It would just be nice to have a solid weekend and not go the other way.

“I would love to shoot a good round tomorrow and then have a good front nine and then all of a sudden look up on Sunday and be in the mix and then see what happens.”

Charley Hoffman, who lost in a playoff in the Phoenix Open in February, had a 68 and was in the group tied for fourth.

Nicolai Hojgaard, who briefly had the lead Saturday in his Masters debut, came down to the Dominican Republic and will be leaving early. He missed the cut with rounds of 73-72.

So did Kevin Chappell, but not before leaving his mark on the resort. Chappell made an albatross on the par-5 fourth hole, the fourth time this year a player made 2 on a par 5. The others were Jake Knapp in The American Express, Shane Lowry at Torrey Pines and Robby Shelton at the Valspar Championship.

Eleven months ago, after the first round of the Memorial Tournament, Billy Horschel stood in front of the media and fought back tears as he talked about his lack of confidence.

He had just fired a 12-over 84, which served as a metaphor for his struggles throughout the 2023 season. Horschel missed 10 cuts a year ago, which led to him missing out on the FedEx Cup Playoffs .

As such, Horschel did not meet the qualification requirements to play in this week’s RBC Heritage —the fifth Signature Event of the 2024 season . But he still wanted to play, knowing that his game was trending in the right direction.

So, he teed it up at the Corales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic, an opposite full-field event.

The decision paid off.

Horschel began the final round three strokes behind Wesley Bryan, but he stormed past him and all the others to win by two. The former Florida Gator signed for a 9-under 63, which tied the course record, to win for the first time on the PGA Tour since the 2022 Memorial.

“This game of golf is so fickle. I think you can put a lot into it and get everything you want out of it,” Horschel said after his win on Sunday.

“But I knew in my 14 years, 13 years previously on the PGA Tour, that I had the ability, I had the talent. I just needed to continue to work hard, do the right things, and continue to believe that good stuff was going to come to the forefront at some point in time.”

Even though his victory did not come against the likes of Scottie Scheffler , Wyndham Clark , Rory McIlroy, or any other elite PGA Tour players, Horschel still holds this win—and other opposite field events—in high regard.

“The PGA Tour has a lot of tournaments, and it’s tough for every tournament to get its due. Opposite-field events have been crucial for many players coming up the ranks,” Horschel explained.

“Look at Tony Finau, Viktor Hovland winning in Puerto Rico, Matt Wallace won this. So listen, it’s another opportunity to play, it’s another opportunity to become a better player, to get that win on the PGA Tour. These events are crucial to the PGA Tour in the sense of the growth of the development of the players on the PGA Tour.”

Horschel’s victory in the Dominican Republic vaults him from 76th to 45th in the FedEx Cup rankings. The top 70 players earn entry into the FedEx Cup Playoffs, so yes, this win carries significant weight.

But Horschel would not have been able to finish the job without his strong psyche and ability to handle pressure down the stretch.

“I don’t like talking about myself but growing up, I always wanted the ball when I was a pitcher; I always wanted to be the guy at battle trying to drive in the winning run; I always wanted to have it on me,” Horschel explained.

“I think growing up and having that mentality, I have grown into Ioving being in the lead. I love having that spotlight on me; I love having everything on me, knowing that if I mess up, it’s my fault, and I am the one who can control my destiny. I’ve always been really good up near the lead, and today, I showed that a little bit.”

Horschel made five birdies on the front nine to soar toward the top of the leaderboard at the midway point of his round. True to himself, he did not fold down the stretch, but rather, he thrived. His eagle at the par-5 12th gave him a two-shot lead with six holes to play, and he never relinquished it.
