About Purple Wine Tour
The Purple Wine Tour is a free extension of the Cape Town Blue Mini Peninsula City Sightseeing bus (more commonly know as the hop-on-hop-off bus ).
It explores a few of the wine estates in the Constantia Valley, that form part of the Constantia Valley wine Route, one of the oldest wine-growing regions in Southern Africa, hailing back to the late 1600s.
Buses leave the Two Oceans Aquarium bus stop, at the V&A Waterfront, from 09h00 on the Blue route.
The Purple wine tour does three wine stops: Beau Constantia Wine Estate, Groot Constantia Wine Estate and Eagles' Nest Wine Farm.
Whilst the tour is free there are entrance fees and charges for wine tastings, and Beau Constantia is open only from Wednesday to Sunday, so plan ahead. In particular, leave plenty of time to add the Purple Wine Tour to your day, as there is plenty to do.
This is what you can expect
Groot Constantia Wine Estate walk the vineyards at your own pace visit the historical manor house taste wine and also enjoy a guided tour through the wine cellar lunch at Jonkershuis
Eagles' Nest Wine Farm sample different varieties of wine that include a Viognier, Shiraz and Merlot
Beau Constantia Wine Estate taste one of the three wines of this boutique wine estate: Viognier; a Sauvignon Blanc, Semillion, Viognier blend; a Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot blend.

- Explore the Constantia Valley with City Sightseeing’s Wine Tour
05 December 2016
I recently had the pleasure of exploring Cape Town’s rich and famously historic Constantia Wine Valley when I hopped on City Sightseeing’s Purple Wine Tour .
I was pleased to find City Sightseeing back at its usual V&A Waterfront tour office, which has undergone a nice revamp .
However, you can also hop on at 81 Long Street (stop 5), but be sure to catch a Blue Mini Peninsula Tour – this bus connects you to the Purple Wine Tour at Constantia Nek (stop 21).
Hop off at Constantia Nek to begin your Purple WIne Tour journey. (Image: Jane Bloggs)
The Blue Mini Peninsula Tour buses depart from the V&A Waterfront every 20 minutes during the summer months. The first of the Purple Wine Tour buses departs from Constantia Nek at 9.55am and the last at 4.45pm.
At the V&A Waterfront, my friend and I hopped on a Blue Mini Peninsula Bus and then curled our way through the city, passing the Cape Town International Convention Centre, the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel, the University of Cape Town and other famous city sights. We listened to the interesting and informative audio commentary, which is available in 15 languages and has a special channel for kids.
After Long Street, we made our next big stop at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, where many of our fellow bus riders hopped off.
After that, our bus navigated its way through the winding, verdant roads up to Constantia Nek, where the Purple Wine Tour and Blue Mini Peninsula Tour routes connect.
Here, just below the newly opened Constantia Nek restaurants, Harbour House and La Parada (if you’re hungry after your tour and manage to get a table, you can enjoy a meal at either of these restaurants), we hopped off and waited a short time for the Purple Wine Tour bus to arrive.
Beau Constantia is within walking distance from the Constantia Nek stop. (Image: Jane Bloggs)
Alternatively, as Beau Constantia’s entrance is a mere 20-30 metre walk away from this stop, you are free to start off your wine tour there.
We decided to stick to the City Sightseeing order of things, where the first stop is at South Africa’s oldest and most historic wine farm, Groot Constantia , followed by Eagles’ Nest (formerly a part of Groot Constantia) and, finally, Beau Constantia, before you connect with the Blue Mini Peninsula Tour again.
Groot Constantia Wine Estate is the first stop on the Purple Wine Tour. (Image: Jane Bloggs)
Groot Constantia (stop 25) is undoubtedly one of Cape Town’s most beautiful wine farms. It feels like an oasis, enclosed by its ancient oaks, and offers fun for everyone.
Enjoy a meal at either of the estate’s two excellent restaurants, Jonkershuis or Simon’s Deli. Simon’s Deli also has a new indoor market, Taste of Simon’s, situated near the restaurant.
The manor house, which you can tour for a small fee, is also well worth visiting and if you have time, why not browse the new weekend market, too?
Tuck into a delicious cheese board from Simon's Deli. (Image: Jane Bloggs)
We decided to share a cheese board at Simon’s Deli – the more relaxed of the two restaurants, though by no means any less lovely – before we went to the wine cellar to explore a bit. Here, you can enjoy a guided tour, buy some merchandise and wine and, of course, do some delicious wine tasting too!
Prices for the above tasting generally start at a minimum of R75, so make sure to have your cash or card on hand. (Prices may be slightly less at the other two estates, but R55 is generally the bare minimum you can expect to pay for a wine tasting.)
We walked back through the magical Groot Constantia grounds, which overlook the vineyards, with Muizenberg and Kalk Bay lying in the far distance, to Jonkershuis Restaurant, where we managed to happily secure a table, despite it being very busy.
Red bus ticket holders get R5 off their wine tasting or the cellar tour and wine tasting. (Image: Jane Bloggs)
At Jonkershuis, we did a mini wine tasting (50ml tasters start at R8 so it’s very affordable, though there are carafe and 250ml options, too). We tried some house wines, including the Pinotage (a locally produced, purely South African wine), Sauvignon Blanc (arguably the estate’s most famous wine) and a pink Blanc de Noir.
Then, once we were well satisfied after enjoying some good food and fine wine at Cape Governor Simon van der Stel’s beloved Groot Constantia, we hopped back on the bus and headed to Eagles’ Nest.
There’s a short walk up to the wine tasting “restaurant”, if I can call it that, but it’s worth it because you’ll quickly discover that Eagles’ Nest is well named and feels like it’s perched on high just like an eyrie (though there’s more behind the name …)
Eagle's Nest is the second stop on the Purple Wine Tour. (Image: Jane Bloggs)
Step through the doors on to the veranda and you will find yourself immersed in a secluded garden, dotted with shaded picnic tables where visitors enjoy sharing good wine and cheese boards.
We didn’t stay here long before we hopped back onto the Purple Wine Tour bus and made our way back to Constantia Nek.
After a short walk in the warm sunshine (which is why you should bring sunscreen and hats with you on this summer tour) past the lime-green, leafy vineyards, we arrived at Beau Constantia. Here, the views rendered us breathless, as we overlooked the Constantia Valley from on high. The bathroom at Beau is even known as a “loo with a view” and when you visit, you will easily see why …
Beau Constantia is known for its "loo with a view". (Image: Jane Bloggs)
This boutique wine farm’s tasting room and wine bar is beautiful, with its glass-fronted windows overlooking the vineyards. Soon, though, there will be a new Chef’s Warehouse restaurant opening here, so you’ll be able to enjoy a great meal with a view, too!
Because Groot Constantia is really the only place at present to grab a proper meal, if you want something more hearty than cheese and charcuterie boards, I’d really recommend having lunch and doing a wine tasting there first, before perhaps ending off with another cheese board at Eagles’ Nest or Beau Constantia, as you enjoy more wine at the two remaining, wonderful Constantia estates.
Groot Constantia, much like Eagle's Nest and Beau Constantia, is picturesque. (Image: Jane Bloggs)
After that, we enjoyed a dessert at Harbour House Constantia Nek before we joined up with the Blue Mini Peninsula Bus once more.
We travelled down the picturesque valley into Hout Bay, then curled along the coastline and passed through Camps Bay, Clifton, Bantry Bay, Sea Point and beyond, with ample stops along the way, until we reached our final destination and hopped off for the last time at the Waterfront.
A one-day red bus ticket costs R190 for adults and R90 for children aged five to 17, though adult ticket holders only pay R170 when they purchase their tickets online .
A minimum exploration time of 30 to 90 minutes is recommended for any of the estates, but be sure to devote your longest visiting period to Groot Constantia as it offers the most to see and do.
Buy your red bus ticket online at a discounted rate and enjoy the views from our open-top Purple Wine Tour buses. (Image: Jane Bloggs)

Wine tasting in Constantia | The perfect weekend activity
- By Katja Mamacos
Table of Contents
One of the most incredible things about Cape Town is our quality of wine and abundance of beautiful vineyards. Whether you want to head out of the city to Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, or stay in town and go wine tasting in Constantia – there are so many options!
Wine tasting with friends and family is the perfect summer activity . You’ll enjoy spectacular views and world-class wines, and in Constantia, you can go from one winery to the next! You’ll also find delicious charcuterie boards and one or two chocolate and wine pairings, for an extra indulgent day.
I’ve put together a resource on all the best wine tasting options on the Constantia wine route, with prices, hours and contact details for each winery. Now you just have to pick your favourite!
Vineyards on the Constantia Wine Route
You have a surprising number of options when going wine tasting in Constantia! I’ve given each of their prices and hours to help you make your decision, as well as my experience of these wonderful wineries.
Eagle’s Nest
Eagle’s Nest is a real family favourite! Trading in the vineyard views for tall-stretching trees and clinging vines, it’s a wonderful winery to start your tour off with.
There’s a lot of space for kids to run around while the adults taste their way through some of South Africa’s best wines. The charcuterie boards are fresh and delicious, and there are even ice creams available for the kids.
This is, I believe, the most laid-back of the wineries, with charming service and a happy atmosphere. It’s also the second stop on the hop on hop off wine route .
Wine tasting price: R85 for 4 wines
Open hours: 10h00 – 16h30
Contact: +27 21 794 4095
Constantia Glen
Constantia Glen is one of the prettiest wine tasting options on the route. It’s glasshouse-style tasting room overlooks the vineyards, with plenty of outdoor space as well. The platters here are excellent, as is the rest of the food!
The staff are very accommodating, and when we found that there wasn’t any space in the tasting room, they made a plan for us to have a similar experience, with descriptions of the wines and everything, using carafes of wine by the glass.
Wine tasting price: R95 for 4 wines | R125 for 7, the Full House tasting
Open hours: 10h00 – 17h00

Read next — the best wine farms in Cape Town ! (many of these wonderful spots are featured)
Buitenverwachting
Buitenverwachting is the first place I ever went wine tasting in Constantia, and it holds a special place in my heart! It’s a beautiful historic wine cellar with wooden floors and leather couches, a real traditional, indulgent spot. You can enjoy your wine tasting in here, or out on the terrace overlooking the garden and the massive old pine tree.
Their charcuterie boards are simple and delicious, with fresh breads and local cheeses. And I’d highly recommend you look out for their Noble Late Harvest, particularly if you enjoy a sweet wine. It’s still my favourite ever!
Wine tasting price: R 70 for 5 wines
Open hours: 10h00 – 15h00 | Closed Sundays
Contact: +27 21 794 5190
Beau Constantia
Beau Constantia is the fanciest winery on this list! I actually haven’t been wine tasting here, I did their seven-course Easter lunch, and it was absolutely incredible. They have a glass wine tasting room sitting at the top of Constantia Valley, with fantastic wines and perfect views. Even the bathroom views are amazing here!
Wine tasting price: R100 – R160
Open hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 11h00 – 17h00

Groot Constantia
Established in 1685, Groot Constantia is the first wine farm in South Africa! This is the best place to learn about South Africa’s wine history. You can even join a guided cellar tour and have a look at the Manor House Museum. Clearly, it’s an ideal destination for wine connoisseurs.
I’d highly recommend the chocolate wine pairing – the chocolates are handcrafted to match their paired wines, and it’s a wonderful, delicious experience. The wine tasting area doesn’t have a restaurant of its own, but there are a number of excellent restaurants on the sprawling property – we carried a charcuterie board up from the one to accompany our wines, and it was terrific! I also found that the wines here were some of the best I’ve had.
Wine tasting price: R105 for 5 wines | R160 for wine and handcrafted chocolate pairing
Open hours: 09h00 – 18h00 daily
Contact: +27 21 794 5128
Klein Constantia
Klein Constantia, too, was established in 1685, as part of a vineyard that gave the Constantia neighbourhood its name. This is a really lovely little winery with a tasting room that overlooks its very modern cellar. The wines are of fantastic quality, the food is terrific, and the atmosphere is cosy and comfortable.
Wine tasting price: R120 for 6 wines
Open hours: 10h00 – 17h00

Constantia wine tours
Constantia is easy – you can go wine tasting at one vineyard, catch an uber to the next, and tick them all off very happily like that. However, if you want to make a special experience of it, you may want to try one of these tours!
The cheapest and simplest is the hop-on-hop-off bus, which will allow you to visit the best wineries on this list without stressing about transportation. But they get a little more interesting than that!
Hop on Hop off bus tour
This bus is one of the most convenient tourist options in the city, with routes that explore everything from Sea Point to Hout Bay . One of the four bus routes is the Purple Wine Tour route. It takes you to Groot Constantia Estate, Eagles’ Nest, and Beau Constantia – which, unless you have the alcohol resistance of a giant, will be as much as you’ll want in a day.
My favourite thing about this bus tour is that you can get a two-day ticket and make an exciting weekend of it, spending one day on one route – like the Yellow route, which takes you to all the museums of Cape Town City Center – and the next day wine tasting and enjoying the gorgeous lush greenery of Constantia.

Bicycle tour through the wine valley
If you’re planning a wine tasting as part of a special family trip or honeymoon – or even a fancy birthday – consider a bicycle tour. You’ll need to be a bit fit, but it’s such a lovely, slow way to experience Cape Town’s oldest wine route.
This tour includes lunch and wine tastings, so it’s extra draw is the lack of planning you’ll have to do! Just drink, eat, ride and be merry.
You can also join an E-bike tour , if you’re not quite feeling up to putting in the peddle-power yourself!
Hike and wine
If you want to do some wine tasting as part of a larger nature-focused experience, this is the perfect combination. You’ll be hiking Table Mountain with a knowledgeable guide, coming down the mountain at the fantastically beautiful Kirstenbosch Gardens. From there, you head to Constantia Glen for some well-deserved wine tasting and relaxation.
I’d say that for locals who have easy access to the mountain at all times, this tour’s not the one I’d pick. But for foreigners who could use a little mountain guidance, accompaniment and interesting information, it’s perfect.
Last thoughts on Constantia wine tasting
So, now you have all the information you’ll need to pick a winery and enjoy a tasting. If you’re planning your trip for a weekend, I’d highly recommend booking in advance. We went just this last weekend, and struggled to find an open tasting room (I’m a terrible planner!).
You’ll also likely want to make a day of it, as it just gets better and better as you go along. But if you’re on a tight budget, one tasting at Buitenverwachting, the cheapest winery on the list, will make for a truly lovely day out.

Cape Town | The Best Franschhoek Wine Tram Route
The Winelands of South Africa lie less than an hour from Cape Town in the beautiful rolling hills. Stellenbosch, with its charming tree-lined streets, may be more well-known but the quaint colonial town of Franschhoek is where you’ll find Cape Town’s best wine experience . The historic town centre is made up of one small but happening street. Beautiful, white Cape Dutch buildings intermingle with lush greenery and lavish restaurants. Smack dab in the middle is the ticket booth for the Franschhoek Wine Tram and the boarding point for four routes reaching out into the magnificent vineyards of South Africa.
While surely the best way to experience the Franschhoek Wine Tram is to do every route (wouldn’t that be nice?) most people don’t have the time to spend four or more days in the Winelands. So we put together a guide for the best Franschhoek Wine Tram route to help you make the most of a single day on board.

A Guide to the Best Franschhoek Wine Tram Route
Why we love it : Top reasons to experience the Winelands on the tram The best route : Why we vote for the orange or purple lines Itinerary : One day on the orange line Budget : Overview of expected costs Top Tips : Helpful hints for your Franschhoek Wine Tram day
Why we Love the Franschhoek Wine Tram
- A Charming Ride – Wine tours are tough to get right. No one wants to be the designated driver and hopping on a coach bus can kill the mood. We love bicycling around to wineries, walking and small tours, but riding an old-timey wine tram through the countryside is a whole new experience that adds a level of charm (and convenience) that really can’t be beat.
- Wine Storage – There’s no carting around your wine haul from winery to winery. When you board at each stop they label your purchases and place them securely in storage for you to pick up at the end of the day. (Though perhaps we would have bought less if it was weighing us down.)
- Safety – The Winelands aren’t far from Cape Town’s surrounding townships and car-jackings are known to happen. Travelling in a group on the wine tram is a safer option than driving around in a snazzy car, especially as you load up on wine throughout the day. Plus, riding the tram rules out drinking and driving.
- Quality Winery Options – Arguably the best thing about the Franschhoek Wine Tram is the range of wonderful wineries en route, from boutique to family-run. It doesn’t just hit up the commercialized mass wineries. And, with eight line options, there is bound to be something for everyone.
- The Welcome Bevy – The Franschhoek Wine Tram knows how to start the day off right. As you settle into your chosen seat and get a quick briefing on the logistics of the route they pour you a cold glass of sparkling to sip along the way.

Which Route is the Best?
The wine tram lines can be a bit confusing at first. There are four routes, and a different colour code for each. You can also do each route in either direction, which is why you see eight lines. We think that the orange and purple lines are the best Franschhoek wine tram route. Here’s why:
- A Beautiful Backdrop – These lines take you out of the valley and up into the scenic hills around Paarl. Rolling hills, fields of grazing cattle and distant mountains become the backdrop for the day.
- Gourmet Eats – The restaurants on this route are destinations all their own. Babel at Babylonstoren is renowned for farm to table seasonal food, beautifully prepared. Just down the road, Lust Bistro & Bakery elevates humble dishes that pair perfectly with the region’s wines. And Allée Bleue and Solms Delta both offer gourmet picnic baskets.
- Flexible Schedule – One of the best things about the orange and purple lines is that the tram comes every 35 minutes . The shorter time frame (most routes are one hour) allows for more flexibility. If you love a place you can opt to stay longer without having to cut another stop.
- The Wine – But of course! The wine offerings on this route are phenomenal. Whether you’re after a crisp Chenin Blanc or a complex Cab Sauv you’ll find it all along the orange and purple lines, from big name wineries down to boutique charmers.
- Accessibility – The orange and purple lines are the only Franschhoek Wine Tram lines that you can join if you’re coming from Cape Town via the CitySightseeing transfer . They’re also the only lines that have two starting point options: the ticket booth in town where all the lines start from, or Groot Drakenstein Station in Paarl.

Note: The Purple Line is the reverse of the Orange Line.
A day on the best franschhoek wine tram route.
Each route as 8-11 stops where you can choose to hop off or skip. You can squeeze a lot in if you skip tours and focus on tastings but we’d recommend prioritizing 3-5 to give you a more relaxed day. Below we’ve broken down the wine tram’s orange line .
Stop One // Noble Hill – Sadly closed for renovations when we visited.
Stop Two // Babylonstoren – This estate could easily consume your whole day if you let it. The lush gardens are perfect for a morning stroll. There are multiple restaurants on site as well as a bakery, spa and boutique shop selling goods like soap and lotions made on site. We popped into the airy glass-walled tasting room and shared a flight to start our day. Keep an eye on the clock to be sure you don’t miss your boarding time walking back from the gardens.
Stop Three // Backsberg – One wine tasting down and we were famished. So, we skipped Backsberg to get to lunch.
Stop Four // Vrede en Lust – Lunch – We got here before the lunch rush (thankfully, because we didn’t make a reservation) and settled right into a table at Lust Bistro & Bakery . After sampling a few wines with our scrumptious (and filling) meal we made a quick trip to the wine shop and scenic tasting room before hopping back on the tram.
Stop Five // Plaisir de Merle – Also closed during our visit, the down side of travelling in low season.
Stop Six // Allée Bleue – By now you’ll have the idea – sipping world-class wines overlooking gorgeous vineyards is what the orange line is all about. Allée Bleue is no exception. It’s also where we (finally) tried South Africa’s famous Pinotage for the first time.
Wine Nerd Fun Fact: Pinotage is South Africa’s unique red varietal. The grape was cultivated by crossing Pinot Noir and Hermitage (which is what they called Cinsault) almost a century ago. It’s ease of growing (like Cinsault) made it popular for mass production. These wines met harsh criticism and the grape was nearly lost until quality producers began to focus on bringing out the best in the grape. Now wineries like Allée Bleue serve up the tannic red proudly.
Stop Seven // Solms Delta – We had actually planned to skip this winery but ended up having time for it and we’re so glad we did. It’s smaller than many others and seems to get overlooked, but it should be at the top of your list. For one, the wine was incredible (and not just because we had already had a few). The bottle we purchased lived up to our fond memories a few days later. The prices were on the lower end on of others on the tour. The vineyard is breathtaking and there is a small production feel to the whole experience. There were only a few other visitors which meant we had a lovely, personalized experience.
Hot Tip: If you don’t do the orange/purple route consider a trip to Solms Delta on its own. They offer unique experiences like foraging in the forest that would make for a great day outing.
Stop Eight // Boschendal – The tasting patio at Boschendal sits in a courtyard surrounded by the iconic white Cape Dutch buildings of the area. They offer up flights of wine, premium tastings and cheese or chocolate pairings. A perfect way to wrap up the day.
Our Wine Tram Budget | Orange Line
The cost of your Franschhoek wine tram experience is very dependant on your choices. Tastings range from R20-R150 depending on how many varietals and the quality of the wine. However, the biggest variance will be in how much wine you choose to purchase. For reference, we’ve broken out what we spent on tastings, pairings and food below. It is calculated per person even though in some instances we shared a flight.
The Tram – R260 / $18 USD
Babylonstoren Tasting* – R50 / $3.5 USD
Lust Bistro & Bakery Lunch – R250 / $18 USD
Allee Bleue Tasting – R100 // $7 USD (choice of three wines with cheese pairing)
Somms Delta Tasting – R45 / $3 USD (the wine tram express tasting of three varietals)
Total Per Person (excluding wine purchases) = R705 / $48.5 USD
*At Babylonstoren we shared the tasting of 6 wines (R60) and 1 premium wine (R30). You can also do an express tasting of three wines for R30.

Franschhoek Wine Tram | Top Tips
- Start early – While the prospect of sampling wine bright and early might preempt the next day’s headache, it’s worth an early start. Getting to the first winery, especially on the orange and purple route can take some time. And these vineyards are beautiful and well worth taking the time to stroll around.
- Pre-Book Lunch – This isn’t mandatory on slow days but if you’re visiting on a weekend, at high season or are dying to eat at Babel, call ahead to make a reservation.
- Prioritize – Take a peak at the timetable before your trip and pick your top 3 wineries. There’s a good chance you’ll have time for more but it will help you decide when to hop off, or not, after a few glasses.

Purple Star Winery
Columbia valley, washington.
In 2008 we set out to start a winery with a specific vision: to embody the soul of wine from vineyard to bottle to table. Our philosophy is that wine should be accessible, approachable, and affordable. But most of all, we believe a wine’s purpose is to bring together family and friends! With 10 years of viticulture and winemaking experience in Washington State, we know a thing or two about making wine.
For starters, Purple Star’s varietal blends are grown from some of Washington State’s finest appellations including Wahluke Slope, Yakima Valley and Red Mountain. With grapes handpicked at their optimal flavor profile and juice fermented at cooler temperatures for longer periods, our wines exhibit softer tannins and retain more varietal character. Thank You For Visiting! May our wines become a familiar face at your dinner table and your social gatherings. Here’s to life worth celebrating!

All Aboard to Wine Country
on the Elkin Vine Line!
Nestled in the scenic foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the historic town of Elkin sits in the middle of North Carolina’s spectacular Yadkin Valley Wine Region. The Elkin Vine Line connects this quaint town to the beautiful vineyards and wineries surrounding it.
The Elkin Vine Line operates on preset routes or “Lines” much like a train or trolley. Our “Winery Hoppers” depart at scheduled times from a central downtown Station and run throughout the day to the wineries encircling the town. Simply reserve your seat on the Line of your choice and let us “Hop” you around to our picturesque wineries!
The Elkin Vine Line currently operates six Lines that connect to four wineries apiece. The Lines are arrayed around the town of Elkin like a compass: the Green and Blue Lines take you south and southeast to our Swan Creek wineries, our Purple and Silver Lines head north and northeast to the wineries near the base of the Blue Ridge, while our Gold Line wends its way east and our central Red Line visits the wineries closer to Elkin.
When you decide which Line you’d like to ride, just reserve your seats using our Booking page, show up to our Station on the day you selected and hop onboard with us as we explore our spectacular wine country together.
For out-of town guests staying in the area, we provide several pick up options based on travel time from our Station. If selected, we will pick you up, get you to our Station in time to board your Line, and return you at the end of the day. If you select our “Dinner Drop”, we’ll give you time to dine at one of our local restaurants before bringing you back. Let us do your driving for the day!
So, if you’re looking for an enchanting wine country getaway amongst some of the most beautiful vineyards and wineries dotting the Yadkin Valley, come visit us in Elkin and ride the Elkin Vine Line!
