Disembarking right at the heart of Quebec City 's historical district, cruise ships enable their passengers and crew members to enjoy the charms of the major tourist sites of Old Quebec City, including Place Royale, the Musée de la Civilisation, the Château Frontenac and the Petit Champlain district. And this is not to forget the countless sidewalk cafes, antique shops, art galleries and sidewalk artists who bring life to the City's picturesque streets.

Located near the old city, along the Petit Champlain neighborhood, the Ross Gaudreault Cruise Terminal is easily accessible by car, foot or public transit

With more and more cruise ships coming to town, The Quai Paquet, a relatively new facility run by the Québec Port Authority and located within port territory, is a short ferry ride away from the Port of Québec proper and offers features like the biggest jet fountain in Canada, along with views of the iconic Chateau Frontenac.

The Old City of Quebec is situated on two levels, Lower Town, at the Port, and the Upper Town and quick walk from the cruise terminal.

The Funicular to the upper town, is next to the Place Royale across from the dock.

Distance from the airport about 16 km. Use a taxi.

Sightseeing:

Château Frontenac The hotel is generally recognized as the most photographed hotel in the world, largely due to its prominence in the skyline of Quebec City. Although several of Quebec City's buildings are taller, the landmark hotel is perched atop a tall cape overlooking the Saint Lawrence River, affording a spectacular view for several kilometers.

An integral part of the Place-Royale historic site, the Maison Chevalier , restored in 1959, is in fact three separate houses: the Chesnay house, the Frérot house and the Chevalier house. Their fire walls, high fireplaces and arched cellars make them especially significant examples of Quebec's architectural heritage. The Maison Chevalier displays domestic scenes from the past in a permanent exhibition.

Basilique Notre-Dame-de-Québec in the Upper Town: This basilica has the oldest parish in North America, dating from 1647. Its somber, ornate interior includes a canopy dais over the episcopal throne, a ceiling of painted clouds decorated with gold leaf, richly colored stained-glass windows, and a chancel lamp that was a gift from Louis XIV.

The large and famous crypt was Québec City's first cemetery; more than 900 bodies are interred here, including 20 bishops and four governors of New France. Samuel de Champlain may be buried near the basilica: archaeologists have been searching for his tomb since 1950. There are information panels that allow you to read about the history of this church. Or, if you prefer, there are guided tours available.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Quebec is made for waking.

There is a funicular from Rue du Petit Champlain in Lower Town to Hotel Chateau Frontenac in Upper Town.

Nearby Places:

Less than thirty minutes from downtown, it is possible to enjoy the landscapes of Ile d'Orléans, the Beaupré Coast and the magnificent Montmorency Falls. A famed pilgrimage destination, the Basilica of Ste-Anne de Beaupré attracts large numbers of visitors every year.  All this and even more make Quebec City a unique destination in North America.

Shopping and Food

Quebec City's Old Town, especially Basse-Ville, is riddled with shops for tourists. Watch for leather goods and various handmade crafts made by Canada's First Nations Peoples.

  • Verrerrie La Mailloche, by the Breakneck Stairs (Basse-Ville). They often have glass blowing demonstrations and will explain the craft to you.
  • Place Laurier, Place de la Cité, Place Ste-Foy, 2700 boulevard Laurier. Three large shopping malls right next to each other. Place Laurier boasts being the largest shopping mall in eastern Canada. reachable by bus (800 or 801 from Place D'Youville at the end of Rue St Jean).

All restaurants in the Old City will post menus out front in French and in English. Look for the table d'hote specials for a full course fixed price meal. On the cheaper (but very satisfying) side, have a traditional tourtière quebecois (meat pie), or a poutine (fries, gravy, and cheese curds).

It's considered normal to tip 10-15% of a restaurant bill. Tips are also usually given to bell hops, concierges, room cleaners, cab drivers, hairdressers, hotel attendants and, by savvy drinkers, bar staff.

Canadian dollar

You will find ATMs in many grocery stores, malls, airports and so on, and most are linked to the international networks, the most common being Cirrus, Plus, Star and Maestro. You can also grab cash from an ATM if you use a major credit card although this method tends to be more expensive because, in addition to a service fee, you'll be charged interest immediately.

Cruise Terminal

Quebec City Visitor Information and Guide

The Quebec City Cruise Terminal is located at Quay 22 in the Basse-Ville district (lower town) of Old Quebec.  See map .

Passengers can enjoy a short walk from the terminal to the funicular station where they can either climb the stairs to the Haute-Ville (upper town) or ride the funicular train.

Cruise Terminal, Quebec City

Due to the large number of cruise ships that visit Quebec each year, some must dock at the Port of Quebec along the St. Charles River.

Passengers on those ships can walk to the cruise terminal and Basse-Ville in approximately 10 minutes.

Québec City Opens Second Brand New Cruise Terminal

Québec City | Photo: Destination Québec Cité

Located just minutes from Old Québec, a new cruise terminal at Port of Québec occupies nearly 100,000 sq. ft., making it the largest in Eastern Canada. This new strategic asset will benefit all cruises on the St. Lawrence River and has the space needed to accommodate the operations of larger ships. With it, the St. Lawrence can position itself as an alternative boarding point on Canada/New England routes departing from Boston or New York.

The leading port of call on the St. Lawrence

Québec City in Eastern Canada is the most popular stop on this route among tourists and cruise lines alike . In 2019, before the pandemic, 260,000 cruise passengers and crew members passed through the port. About 100 port calls are currently scheduled for 2022, 16 of which will include the arrival and departure of new passengers.

With a historic district recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Québec City receives international accolades year after year. Most recently, it was named the top port in the U.S. and Canada by Cruise Critic in 2019 and the top destination on the Canada/New England route by readers of Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine in the 2019 and 2020 Readers’ Choice Awards.

Cruise passengers make up 3% of the tourists and visitors who come to Québec City every year. While this may be a small percentage of the total number of tourists the city welcomes annually, cruisers are high-value travelers. Many take the opportunity to stay a few nights before or after their cruises and see more of Québec City. In 2019, the cruise industry generated about 55,000 overnight stays in the city. With the added stopovers, the capital city can expect over $100 million in spending from cruises and related activities.

THE CHALLENGES AHEAD

September and October are the busiest months for the cruise industry, but the Port of Québec and Destination Québec Cité are working to encourage cruise lines to extend their season and discover everything Québec City has to offer. There are tons of things to do in the summer, starting in June—particularly for families.

Funding the needs created every year by the arrival of these vessels also remains a priority issue. The flow of tourists and cruise passengers in Old Québec needs to be properly managed to avoid bottlenecks and keep life enjoyable for locals. A land mobility plan for cruise passengers is also under development to find sustainable transportation solutions, among other things. The tourism companies and partners involved in managing and welcoming cruises meet annually to take stock and see what can be improved. Representatives of local groups are always invited to attend these meetings.

AN ECO-FRIENDLY CHOICE?

Cruise lines were hit hard by the pandemic and are increasingly making efforts to reduce pollution by using alternative fuels and new technologies to filter emissions and cut down on their environmental impact. The success of the cruise industry depends on maintaining the well-being of its host communities and creating collective and sustainable value for all. We all want to contribute to the restoration and protection of the ecosystems that support the cruise industry, but to do so, we need better communication!

A number of companies are planning to start using shore power to reduce pollution. The Port of Québec is currently evaluating the possibilities in this regard.

When the first ships arrive in Québec City in 2022 , after a two-year absence, it will be a symbol of victory against the pandemic. The public health standards on ships are more stringent than ever, and the return of Caribbean cruises is going even better than expected. Protocols for isolating cases of COVID-19 have been deployed on board as needed.

Let’s hope that Québec City will continue to offer the warmest welcome to cruisers, with docks full of people waving hello!

One killed, 10 injured when shuttle bus driver mistakes gas for brake at Hawaii cruise terminal

O ne person was killed and multiple others injured Friday when a shuttle bus driver in Hawaii mistook the gas pedal for the brake — plowing into nearly a dozen people waiting at a cruise terminal.

The 57-year-old driver had just dropped off a group of passengers at Honolulu’s Pier 2 terminal around 10:30 a.m. and had exited the bus when a bystander warned him that the car was rolling forward, the city’s police said.

The driver jumped back in the shuttle, but in the frenzy “pressed the gas pedal instead of the brakes and collided with two concrete barriers and eleven pedestrians.”

A 68-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to her injuries.

Four others — in their 50s and 60s — were hospitalized in serious condition, while a man in his 70s was listed as stable.

The remaining pedestrians were bandaged at the scene.

The youngest victim is in their 40s, EMS said.

Police said speed does not appear to be a contributing factor to the crash, and are still investigating whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

Honolulu police could not immediately confirm whether the victims were tourists, telling The Post that the pier is located in a popular commercial area.

The investigation is ongoing.
