During your time in Fredericksburg, be sure to go to Enchanted Rock State Park.

This huge dome-shaped pink granite rock has been welcoming visitors for decades.

Don’t let the country feel of this town fool you though, Oklahoma City is full of fun things to keep you busy during your weekend trip.

A visit to the Myriad Botanic Gardens will not only have you surrounded by beautiful flora and fauna, but if you’re lucky, you might also catch a live performance!

While the outdoor gardens are free to explore, I would suggest paying the small entry fee to go into the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory as well.

A visit to the Bricktown entertainment district is a must do while in OKC.

The Bricktown area is overflowing with fabulous restaurants, bars, live music venues, comedy clubs, and more.

This is a great area to spend a night out.

Of course, there are several museums and historic sites to check out while in Oklahoma City as well.

Some noteworthy stops include the Oklahoma City Museum of Art , the Oklahoma City National Memorial, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum , and the Oklahoma Railway Museum .

14. Little Rock, Arkansas

Distance from dallas: 319 miles, 5 hours.

Little Rock, Arkansas is one of the weekend getaways from Dallas that is like a mini-road trip.

Located almost 5 hours from Dallas, this is one of those getaways that you might want to do on a long weekend.

Once you arrive in Little Rock you will find plenty to keep you entertained.

You can start by touring the Arkansas State Capital building, which is located in Little Rock.

They offer guided tours to ensure that you have the best experience learning about the state of Arkansas.

Another great introduction to the history of Arkansas is the Old State House Museum.

This building served as the original capital of Arkansas from 1842 to 1912.

You might be wondering how it is different from Dallas?! Well, trust us, Dallas and Fort Worth are completely different!

The city of Fort Worth is located about an hour west of Dallas.

Here you will find a great cowboy culture, fabulous live entertainment, and a thriving, but laid back nightlife scene.

If you want to immerse yourself in the cowboy culture and cowboy history of the city during your weekend getaways, then you should definitely consider staying in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

The Stockyards allows you to enjoy all things cowboy.

You can watch the daily cattle drive, take in a rodeo, eat some delicious Texas BBQ, and go two stepping in the World’s Largest Honky Tonk, Billy Bob’s Texas.

There are also some fun Texas themed touristy shops and several bars for you to enjoy in the area.

If you are ok with your trips from Dallas to Fort Worth not including the cowboy scene, then you might want to stay in the downtown Sundance Square area.

The Sundance Square area of Fort Worth is home to delicious, upscale Texas cuisine, several live performance venues, and some great nightlife.

Colorado Bend State Park is another of the weekend getaways that are in the Texas Hill Country.

When people first visit Colorado Bend State Park, they find themselves wondering if they are even still in Texas.

It is not uncommon for people (us included) to say, “I had no idea this was in Texas,” when they first see Colorado Bend State Park.

You are probably wondering why about now.

Well, you see, this is the exact feeling that will be evoked when you embark on the three-mile round-trip hike to Gormon Falls which are located inside Colorado Bend State Park.

Gorman Falls looks like a beautiful waterfall that you would see in the jungles of Coast Rica, not Texas! This 60-70 foot waterfall is truly breathtaking.

Of course, Gormon Falls is not the only reason to visit Colorado Bend State Park. You can enjoy the park’s hiking and biking trails, kayak on the Colorado River, and pitch camp at the many campsites that are available.

This state park is truly a great weekend escape from the city!

17. Caddo Lake, Texas

We mentioned the town of Jefferson above as one of our small town getaways from Dallas.

While Caddo Lake is located in the city of Jefferson, we felt it deserved a category all it’s own.

That’s because an escape to Caddo Lake can be just that, and escape!

Caddo Lake is one of the most beautiful places in Texas in our opinion. It truly looks as if you are living inside of a tranquil painting.

Since Caddo Lake is only about 3 hours from Dallas, we feel it is hands down one of the best weekend trips from Dallas!

You can set up camp at Caddo Lake State Park or check out the cabin rentals that are in the small towns nearby, like Jefferson.

During your weekend visit to Caddo Lake, you have to get out on the water! To do this, you can take a boat tour or rent kayaks.

Take note though, if you choose to set out on your own in kayaks, be careful as you can easily get lost on this lake.

The majesty of Caddo Lake is the beauty of the Spanish moss hanging from the 400+ year old Cypress trees that seem to pop up out of the water.

Caddo Lake is truly one of the most beautiful weekend getaways from Dallas that you can have!

18. Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas

Distance from dallas: 294 miles, 4.5 hours.

Another one of the fun trips from Dallas is to visit Hot Springs National Park in Hot Springs Arkansas.

Hot Springs National Park has been drawing visitors to Hot Springs for hundreds of years.

The ancient thermal springs were known to have healing properties that many still believe in today.

A visit to Hot Springs National Park allows you to explore the historic bath houses on Bathhouse Row, including the historic Fordyce Bathhouse Museum and Visitor Center.

Of course, no visit to Hot Springs National Park would be complete without experiencing the thermal waters for yourself.

There are several places where you can enjoy the ancient thermal waters during your time in Hot Springs.

These include the Buckstaff Bathhouse, the longest continually running bathhouse in the area.

The Buckstaff still offers traditional bathing treatments, so come here if you want a true historic bathhouse experience.

If you want to experience the thermal waters of Hot Springs in a more modern environment, then consider visiting the Quapaw Bathhouse.

The Quapaw offers modern day spa services in addition to public and private thermal baths, and a steam cave.

Of course, that isn’t all there is to do in Hot Springs.

Dallas has the largest urban arts district in the USA, excellent sports teams to root for, and some great BBQ. Dallas residents are also spoiled with the 3rd largest airport in the world, DFW. If you're looking to get away from the city for a quick weekend by air or by car, you're in a great spot.

With a vast array of short domestic destinations, there are also some international destinations within reach. Here are some weekend getaway ideas for locals in the Dallas area within a non-stop 4-hour flight. More importantly, these trips are all possible without having to request PTO (for you M-F 9-5'ers), it just depends on what you want to do at your destination.

Depending on your reason for wanting to escape the city for a few days, you can find the perfect relaxing or romantic, or exciting, or family-fun vacation!

Dripping Springs

If you want to spend some time between Austin and Texas Hill Country, you’ll want to visit Dripping Springs. Because of its location, it has the perfect blend of Austin’s live music and Texas Hill Country’s scenic views. Hamilton Pool Preserve is a must-visit day trip from Austin. The Preserve is a waterfall that tumbles over the edge of a cave and into a beautiful swimming hole. Due to its close location (just a city away), Fort Worth is one of the best inexpensive weekend getaways near Dallas. While it’s a large city similar to Dallas, it has a whole different scene and unique attractions you can only find in Fort Worth.

A portion of the city that’s frozen in time is the Fort Worth Stock Yards that is always a wonderful place to visit, even if you’re a Texas native. You can watch a cattle drive at either 11:30 am or 4:00 pm when cowboys in full gear herd the famous Texas longhorn down East Exchange Avenue. There are also modern cowboys at the Stockyard’s weekly rodeo.

In contrast to the wild west, you can dress up for an evening at Bass Performance Hall where touring broadway shows and beautiful concerts, ballets, and operas perform live. The exterior of the Hall with its trumpeting sculptures is housed in the third-largest cultural district in the U.S., so you’re sure to be inspired as you stop in the neighboring shops and galleries.

You can reach Fort Worth in under 40 minutes making it one of our favorite short trips from Dallas.

Not only is Galveston one of the most popular weekend getaways from Dallas, but it’s also one of the prettiest beaches in Texas. Its vast 32 miles of sandy beaches means that there’s plenty of room to accommodate the crowds without having to feel crowded. The Gulf weather is also perfect for year-round visits to this ocean town.

Depending on which of the weekend getaways from Dallas you are looking for, you can choose between relaxing or adventurous. While spending all weekend on the beach is definitely an option, you can also go birding, fishing, kayaking, or surfing.

Of course, no visit to Galveston is complete without a visit to Pleasure Pier, the amusement park that sits above the ocean water.

Shreveport, LA

This is one of the most interesting weekend getaways from Dallas because you’ll be leaving the great state of Texas and heading to Louisiana! It’s the perfect adult’s-only weekend since Shreveport and its neighbor Bossier City has a number of casinos that draw in visitors from all over the region. So be ready to place your bets and win big at night and relax during the day at your hotel’s spa.

Of course, you can’t go to Louisiana without some cajun and creole food. Orlandeaux’s Cafe is the USA’s oldest operating African-American family-owned restaurant so you know the recipes that they use have been tried and tested and perfected with each generation. There’s gumbo, po’boys, and stuffed shrimp on the menu that you can’t go wrong with by ordering.

There are also festivals that happen throughout the year, so be sure to check the city’s calendar to see if there’s one while you’re in town!

The best part is that Shreveport is surprisingly less than 3 hours away from Dallas!

Fredericksburg

German influence can be seen and felt in the Texas hill country of Fredericksburg, so if you’re looking for some must-eat traditional German cuisine, you’ll find plenty of options here! Whether it’s bakeries or breweries, Fredericksburg will leave you filled with authentic brats and beer from some of their best restaurants!

While you’re treating your tastebuds to the local eateries, be sure to walk what’s known as The Magic Mile, aka Main Street, Fredericksburg. You’ll find yourself wandering into unique stores like art galleries, through festivals, past street musicians. The walk is located between the Admiral Nimitz Museum and the Vereins Kirche Museum, so you can start and end your walk with a mix of culture and history. There are truly so many things to do in Fredericksburg!

You can’t go to Texas hill country without exploring the nature it encompasses. There are plenty of seasonal bluebonnet and poppy fields to frolic through near Fredericksburg. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is a 425-foot pink granite formation that serves as a Texas mountain. Due to its popularity, reservations are required (which means you’ll really be able to feel the calmness of nature since there won’t be a big crowd). There are over 10 miles of trails to explore, hike, rock climb, and enjoy. The higher elevation also makes Enchanted Rock an ideal viewpoint for bird watchers and stargazers.

Fredericksburg is just under a 4.5-hour drive, but because of its German roots, it’s one of the most unique weekend getaways from Dallas.

Colorado Bend State Park

If you want to spend some time in the great outdoors, Colorado Bend State Park is one of the most ideal weekend getaways from Dallas for you. While Colorado Bend State Park might not be one of the National Parks found in Texas, it has all you could want in a relaxing camping weekend. Hiking, cave tours, biking, fishing, swimming, and of course camping are what await you at Colorado Bend State Park.

One of the best hikes in the Park is the hike to Gorman Falls. It’s a 3-mile hike over rocky terrain that will take you to a beautiful waterfall. Because Gorman Falls is fed by spring water, it’s surrounded by mossy rocks and spans about 650 feet. While you can’t swim in the pool at the waterfall’s base, you can swim in Spicewood Springs also located inside the Park. It is truly one of the best hidden gems in Texas!

The water activities don’t end there. If you want to cool off in the summer, you can spend time out on Lake Buchanan by boating or kayaking. Or, if you want to escape the sun altogether, you can go below ground and explore any number of the 400 caves in the Park.

Colorado Bend State Park is about three hours and fifteen minutes away from Dallas if you’re traveling via car.

Gaylord Texan Resort

Located in Grapevine, the Gaylord Texan Resort has everything you could want under its roof. From 4.5 acres of gardens to a nightclub, restaurants to shopping, the sheer vastness of the Gaylord Texan makes it one of the go-to weekend getaways from Dallas.

If you can’t get enough of the beaches during the day, or if you want to be lulled to sleep by the sound of real ocean waves, you can stay on the beachfront at a condo, hotel, or RV. You’ll be the first ones in the water in the morning after waking up to one of the most memorable sunrises you’ll ever see.

Corpus Christi is about 6 hours from Dallas, so if you have the opportunity to go during a long weekend, you’ll be better able to enjoy all that the city has to offer.

Great Wolf Lodge

Part of the largest chain of indoor water park resorts in America, there’s a reason that Great Wolf Lodge is one of the most popular weekend getaways from Dallas for families. Not only does it have a four-story slide for tubing, but it also has a four-story splash treehouse that kids will love!

If your kids aren’t water lovers, they can also enjoy a ropes course, indoor mining, an arcade, and even a Great Wolf Lodge Build-A-Bear. For younger kids, there are a nightly storytime, kiddie pool, and characters (including the mascot Great Wolf).

Craft beer and wine lovers are drawn to New Braunfels because the city sits on both the Hill Country Craft Beer Trail and the Wine Trail. One of the crowning jewels in Glen Rose is Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, a wildlife conservation facility that also serves as a community educator. Guests can go on a self-guided safari as they drive through the property in their own cars. Food pellets for the animals are available for purchase and will encourage these animals to approach your vehicle. The facility is home to zebras, giraffes, rhinos, ostriches, antelope, and gazelles so it will feel like your very own African safari!

Accommodations at Fossil Rim include a lodge or cabins that overlook a watering hole that’s popular with animals. You never know what you will wake up to just outside your window!

If you’re looking for ancient wildlife, you’ll want to explore Dinosaur Valley State Park where you can view actual fossils and dinosaur footprints preserved in the river beds. You can also visit the Ed Young Gas Station that was built with petrified wood in honor of the dinosaur history found within the city.

1. Lake Texoma

An incredible weekend getaway from Dallas or Fort Worth, includes time on the water. Lake Texoma is a large lake with lots of water fun activities. Lake Texoma is close enough to DFW to be easily accessible, but remote enough to unplug, relax and enjoy your weekend. Bring or rent a boat to enjoy on-water activities.

2. Dinosaur Valley State Park & Dinosaur World in Glen Rose

Most people are fascinated by dinosaurs. That’s why I like to take out of town visitors to Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, about an hour drive to the southwest of Ft. Worth. Here people can see sauropod and theropod tracks just by walking a few yards from the parking. They are in the water but most of the time can be easily seen from where you stand.

Depending on what time of year you go, you can also swim in the Blue Hole area. While swimming, don’t forget to look for sauropod tracks. If you come late in the summertime, when the water level is at the lowest, you can walk to the Ballroom site. This is where lots of dinosaur tracks found facing in different directions as if they were dancing. Other activities you can do at this park are hiking, bird-watching, geocaching, fishing, riding a horse, camping, or picnicking.

If you have young paleontologists in the family, stop at Dinosaur World, right at the corner before you turn to Dinosaur Valley SP. You can walk among life-size dinosaur displays and learn about them, from the type of dinosaurs, when they existed, to where they roamed. The little ones can also dig for dinosaur fossil and pan for gems . Your little one will love this explorer’s kit as they discover real Dinosaur tracks.

Before you leave, don’t forget to stop at the little museum around the corner.

Dinosaur Valley State Park is a dog-friendly place, so your 4 legs family member can enjoy his/her time here, too.

You can always bring your snacks or picnic lunch to enjoy at one of their picnic tables by the playground.

3. Buda, TX

Want to have a fun weekend trip from DFW?  Head south to Buda, Texas pronounced Buuuuda.  Yes, this country town is a fun place to explore!  Buda is located south of Austin.

Buda is a perfect place for a food tour. The foodie inside of you is going to love all the variety it has to offer.  Start with a breakfast taco tour, continue with some delicious Mexican food, dessert before dinner at one of the many local sweet shops, and end at one of the most famous Bar-B-Que restaurants in Texas – The Salt Lick (located in Driftwood but close to Buda)  There are some fun  things to do in Buda .  Main Street in Buda is so cute!  There are a variety of local shops and restaurants. One of the best times to visit Buda is during the Weiner dog races. Yes, Weiner dog races!   This town loves weiner dogs and puts on a huge family-friendly event in April.  If you love country music and dancing, a brand new dance hall called the Maverik recently opened and George Strait performed.  Buda is a great weekend trip from Dallas with kids!

4. Wichita Falls, TX

Located northwest from Dallas-Ft. Worth, a two-hour drive to Wichita Falls takes visitors to a whole other side of Texas. This small college town, with an Air Force Base, houses an interesting little locale worth the drive.

Within a few blocks area, downtown Wichita Falls hosts some quirky little establishments. The world’s littlest skyscraper? Yep, it’s here in Wichita Falls. You can visit the Museum of North Texas History and the Railroad Museum. The Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame is likely one of the biggest draws to the town. Memorabilia from all ages of wrestling are on display. You’ll find autographed and donated items from some of your favorite wrestlers – like The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and so many more! 

Lovers of the outdoors and nature will especially enjoy Wichita Falls. Stop by the Falls at Lucy Park, an homage to the town’s beginnings. The park features almost two miles of trails, popular with walkers, runners, and bicyclists. A mountain bike trail passes by a memorial to the Comanche indians who called this area Wee Chi Tah.

The craft brewery scene has come to town too. Stop by Wichita Falls Brewing for a refreshing cool draft. If you’re looking for an affordable steak dinner, don’t miss visiting McBride Land & Cattle Co. Steaks.

5. Oklahoma City

One of the best road trips from Dallas, takes you right across the North Texas border into Oklahoma. Oklahoma City will surprise and delight your family. There are so many unique opportunities to experience in this town. Although you could enjoy a weekend, there is plenty more to explore and could be a week-long adventure .

The Science museum was possibly our family’s favorite in the country. The museum of Osteology (bones and skeletons) is one of a kind. OKC Zoo includes a tram to get around and unique animals to delight your whole family.

Factory Obscura- Mix Tape Art Installation will blow your mind. Remember to get the 3D glasses for the full-effect.

The Botanical Gardens and Scissortail park are perfect outdoor spaces for kids.

You will love the Plaza District with fence murals and quaint shops and dessert stores. Rent scooters from off the street or take a water taxi to move around the Bricktown District. With paths around the river, art displays and amazing restaurants, like Bricktown Brewery, you’ll want to spend time day and night in this district.

6. Hot Springs, Arkansas

4.5 hours from DFW

Road trips from Dallas don’t have to stay within Texas! Cross into Arkansas for a fun, family-friendly travel weekend. Hot Springs is a city built around Hot Springs National Park. What used to be a medical facility of hot mineral baths, is now a destination for all. You’ll find hot tubs along bathhouse row (still in use!), hiking in the hills along the Grand Promenade, and the views from Mountain Tower. Bring a water bottle to fill up on hot mineral water!

In Hot Springs, you should also experience the awesome Mid-America Science Museum, Gangsta Museum, Magic Springs Theme park, and bottle water tours.

7. Turner Falls, OK

Tuner falls is a very short road trip from Dallas. Just across the Oklahoma border, you will love this waterfall and river for a full day of play. The water at Turner Falls really is the magical color you see! It is clear and cool, perfect for the hot, Texas summer. Turner Falls is located on the border of Texas and Oklahoma. You do need to reserve your entrance in advance as it will fill up.

You will want to get to Turner Falls right as it opens and stay the whole day. You can even camp at Turner Falls, but you do pay for entry to the park for both days you are camping, but then you get the river to yourself before the day crowds arrive.

At the entrance to the park, the river offers a slide (its really fast!), a diving board and lots of rock playing area.

Don’t miss exploring the castle about half way through the park.

At the end of the park, you’ll find the majestic Turner Falls. The swimming area right below the falls are deep because it is damned off to make a swimming area. You can walk right out on the dam as water pours under your feet. In the rest of the park, the water going downstream is more shallow.

Find a spot to picnic, play on the beach, swim below the waterfall. We explored all the way down the river. Everyone will want water shoes that stay on. These sturdy water shoes are perfect for kids. And bring water shoes for yourself as well, you will definitely want to help your family explore. The rocks can be uneven and slippery.

Everyone under 16 must wear life-jackets at all times. So be sure top come prepared with teens , kids , toddler and baby lifejackets .

8. Waco, TX

1.5 Hours from DFW

No Texas road trip is complete without a stop in Waco. Waco is a small town made famous by Chip and Joanna Gaines from the popular TV show Fixer Upper. You will find their restaurant, Magnolia Table with decoration inspiration and delicious food to complete the experience. Magnolia Square has so many shopping opportunities. You’ll find the warehouse shop with a little bit of everything.

Magnolia home offers furniture and decor for the home. There are 6 distinct shops featuring everything from books to body to baby. 9. Conroe, TX

There is quite a bit to see in south Texas on a weekend road trips from Dallas Conroe is a small town just north of Houston with lots of history, art and fun for kids. Stroll around downtown for painted benches and shops as well as a splash pad park.

Kids will love 7 Acres Farms! With live animals, boats to explore, a mini-golf course and a zipline, they will be entertained for hours with one simple entrance fee.

You will love learning about Texas History and have a sense of patriotism at the Lonestar Flag Monument. Don’t forget to get a Texas Flag as a souvenir!

Lake Conroe is just north of town, so you can experience all the water sports you love here.

10. Midland and Odessa, TX

Heading west can create some of the best weekend trips from Dallas or Fort Worth. As the mid-point between El Paso and DFW, Midland and Odessa have lots of fun adventures and great food to offer the traveler. Take some time to explore Texas’ history in the Permian Basin and the Petroleum Museum.

You dont have to go all the way to England to find Stonehenge. And this replica allows you to et close and interact with the stones… much more family friendly than the real-deal.

Drive fast on the go-cart track and RimRock Raceway. Jump and play at Altitude or 4Kidz Fun Park. and if the kids still have energy, go ice skating inside Music City Mall.

11. Abilene, TX

2.5 hours from DFW

The short driving distance to Abilene makes it one of the best weekend trips from Dallas with kids. In Abilene, You can experience an intimate zoo, parks with your favorite story book characters and find multiple Texas History Experiences. A weekend away might be just what you need to escape the Dallas heat, and fortunately, you have more than a few attractive destinations nearby.

If you have a couple of days to spare for an adventure, you’ll be happy to know that you don’t have to drive too long (traffic permitting, of course) from Dallas to reach an interesting new place to explore. Some are still within Texas while others are just across the borders in neighboring states. With so much to see and do, the hardest part of your weekend road trip from Dallas could very well be deciding which of these awesome places to visit.

Whether you want to check out the sights of a bustling new city or you’re longing to immerse yourself in the great outdoors, these are the best weekend road trips from Dallas for your driving pleasure.

1. Caddo Lake State Park

Get back to nature with a weekend away at Caddo Lake State Park . This park in the Piney Woods region of East Texas is known for its picturesque, swampy landscape, and the best way to explore the twisting bayous is by canoe or kayak (bring your bug spray.) While you’re making your way underneath the moss-covered bald cypress trees, remember that gators are here too, so act appropriately according to alligator safety rules .

Other ways you can fill your time include hiking in the forest and fishing the 26,810-acre lake, which houses more than 70 fish species. Speaking of fishing: You don’t need to have a license if you’re fishing from the shore.

Caddo Lake State Park has 46 campsites, some with just water and some that have full hookups for RVs. You can also rent one of their historic cabins, which were converted from army barracks by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

It’s a straight shot south from Dallas to Austin, the capital of Texas. There, it’s all about keeping things weird (seriously: the city’s slogan is “Keep Austin Weird.”) There’s plenty to do for every type of traveler whether you like live music, art, or kayaking.

If you’re interested in historical and cultural highlights, take a tour at the Texas Capitol , visit one of the city’s many museums like the Bullock Texas State History Museum , or check out the LBJ Presidential Library . If you’re here to party, visit the bars along the famous Sixth Street or Rainey Street. If nature is what you’re after, head up Mount Bonnell, go for a hike along the Greenbelt, or rent a stand-up paddleboard on Lady Bird Lake.

Austin also likes to call itself the “Live Music Capital of the World,” so if you have the time, try catching a show at one of the more than 250 live music venues around the city. If you don’t mind the crowds, try to come during the Austin City Limits Festival for the ultimate long music-focused weekend.

During your visit, you may consider checking out the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum , which commemorates the victims, survivors, and rescuers of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. Another worthwhile museum is the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum , which holds an impressive collection of Western and American Indian art and artifacts.

If the weather is nice, make time to see the Myriad Botanical Gardens . Spanning 17 acres, the garden and urban park has a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces, but the one you definitely can’t miss is the 224-foot-long glass tropical conservatory. Another place to enjoy the fresh air is Scissortail Park , a large urban park with pedal boat, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard rentals on its large lake. Those who want to see the most popular ones can head to the Museum District , where you’ll find the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Menil Collection, and more.

Another one of Houston’s highlights is Space Center Houston . It’s the official visitor center of NASA and has historic space capsules, a lunar module, rockets, and all-things-out-of-this-world. Kids and adults will love it.

To break up all those indoor attractions, you may also want to see some of Houston’s most beloved urban green spaces. Hermann Park (the Japanese Gardens are especially lovely), Buffalo Bayou Park, and Memorial Park are all nice places to soak up some nature.

5. San Antonio

Keep going on I-35 past Austin and you’ll reach San Antonio, where some of the state’s most popular tourist attractions await (plus lots of delicious tacos.)

If it’s your first time in San Antonio, you can’t miss a trip to the Alamo (the famous 18th-century mission where the phrase (“Remember the Alamo” originated), and the River Walk , a 15-mile walkway along the water with tons of shops, restaurants, and bars. Other gems of the city include the four other Spanish missions that collectively form a National Historical Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you’ve already seen the main sights in San Antonio before, you may just spend the whole weekend riding the roller coasters at Six Flags Fiesta Texas . For another amusement park, there’s SeaWorld , which has roller coasters along with marine life experiences and shows. You can also see what’s new at the San Antonio Museum of Art or grab a drink at the historic Pearl District.

Another weekend destination for a road trip from Dallas is Tulsa, in nearby Oklahoma. One must-see here is the Philbrook Museum of Art , located in a historic villa that was once an oil magnate’s home. Aside from looking at the art indoors, you should also meander through the property’s beautiful 25-acre gardens.

Anyone traveling with kids must pay a visit to Gathering Place . This massive riverfront park offers a variety of fun attractions, including an adventure playground, skate park, boathouse, sports courts, sky garden, nature trail, and more. Even if you don’t have a child, it’s an awesome place to let your inner kid run wild.

For a night on the town, you’ll want to go to the Blue Dome District , a downtown area popular for its many bars and restaurants. Other top attractions in Tulsa include the Gilcrease Museum , Oklahoma Aquarium , and Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame .

7. Fredericksburg

For a wine-filled weekend getaway, there’s no better place to go in Texas than Fredericksburg. This charming town in the middle of the Hill Country is known for its numerous vineyards and tasting rooms. For anyone who doesn’t feel like plotting out their own itinerary (or doesn’t have a designated driver), you can simply hop on one of the wine tour shuttles or walk between tasting rooms .

While wine is all the rage in Fredericksburg, there’s still quite a lot of non-drinkers to enjoy here. You might not have guessed it, but this town is home to the National Museum of the Pacific War (Chester William Nimitz, the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II, was born here.) There’s also the Pioneer Museum , where you can learn about the German heritage of the city (it was founded by German immigrants in 1846).

Speaking of German heritage, make sure to try some of the German food around town at spots like Old German Bakery and Restaurant, The Auslander, and Otto’s. Fredericksburg is fairly close to both Austin and San Antonio in case you wanted to combine both into one longer road trip from Dallas.

8. Hot Springs National Park

Cross the state border to Arkansas and you can spend your weekend at Hot Springs National Park . Back in the day, this area was a popular spa town as the thermal springs were said to have medicinal properties. Along the appropriately named Bathhouse Row, you can see historic bathhouse buildings built here between 1892 and 1923. At two of these (Buckstaff Bathhouse and Quapaw Bathhouse) you can still take a dip.

Aside from the springs, you can hike 26 miles of trails, take your bike along the Pullman Trail, or do some bird watching at the Grand Promenade. If you’re here to camp, you’ll want to head to Gulpa Gorge , the park’s official campground. Each site has full hookups, a picnic table, and a pedestal grill. There are no site reservations allowed, so plan accordingly. If you’d rather stay somewhere a bit more luxurious, book a stay at the Hotel Hale on Bathhouse Row.

When the weather begins to warm and wildflowers start to bloom, spring fever erupts. Time to get out of the house and off on a road trip . Fill the tank, grab the camera and leave Dallas & Fort Worth heading north, south, east or west for one of these reinvigorating weekend getaways. From relaxing wineries, great shops and delightful art to historical museums, dinosaur bones and adventure, these are the best weekend getaways from DFW, Texas .

Head 35mi (56km) north from downtown and you’ll hit McKinney – great for a weekend or just a day. It’s a place for ambling, nosing in boutiques and for lazing over lunch in and around the pretty downtown square. Favorite spots include Cadillac Pizza Pub , and Landon Winer y. Hang around into evening and you’ll find many establishments have live music. If you’re into wildlife and hiking, the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature preserve with miles of trails, plus a plant garden and butterfly house. McKinney is also known for vineyards and breweries, so you’ll have no trouble quenching your thirst after all that walking.

Three hours up Interstate 35, Oklahoma City is a cinch to get around and has masses to see and do. Start at the Museum of Art – where a 55ft (17m) blown-glass installation in the atrium greets you, created by Dale Chihuly. In fact, the museum has one of the most comprehensive collections of Chihuly glass in the world. After, observe a moment’s silence at the Oklahoma City National Memorial, and visit the adjoining museum, which explores the events of 19 April 1995: the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building; the loss of 168 lives; the wounding of 680; and the consequences in the days, weeks and years that followed. End up in buzzy Bricktown with a bite and a bevy at one of its watering holes: the oldest tap house in the city, TapWerks, has real atmosphere – and more than 200 beers on tap.

Fredericksburg

The clue’s in the name: this town was founded by German settlers in the mid-19th century. You still get a taste of the homeland today in the architecture and the food, the military history and the rambling vineyards. It’s around four hours’ drive south of Dallas & Forth Worth, amid the rolling landscapes of Hill Country, with hundreds of B&Bs to choose between. Settle in and make your first stop the National Museum of the Pacific War ; packed with interactive exhibits, it tells the story of the Pacific Theater battles of World War II. While here, idle in the Japanese Garden of Peace. Next stop: Main Street, for art galleries and shops, then refreshments – there are beer gardens at Hondo’s On Main and Auslander, as well as live music. One evening, hit the Rockbox Theater for country, rock and blues tributes; and spend a day exploring the wineries along Highway 290 – try a tour, so you can drink a tempranillo or two.

Halfway between Dallas and Austin is the college town of Waco, home to the Mayborn Museum – on the Baylor University campus – which is especially fun for children, with interactive stations and displays; while all ages will love the Waco Mammoth exhibit. Walking on a see-through floor you see, below, casts of Columbian mammoth bones displayed exactly as they were unearthed mere miles from the campus. With hunger pangs gnawing, hit the Collin Street Bakery for a slice of pie, a macaroon or their famous fruit cake. For a more substantial meal, something meaty from Rudy’s Bar-B-Q will hit the spot.

San Antonio

Five hours south of Dallas & Forth Worth, along I-35, lies the perfect long weekend. San Antonio, of course, means a visit to the Alamo, the Spanish Missions and the famed River Walk; but it’s also a winner if you’re in the mood for food: Mexican , French or German . Favorite treats include the prickly pear margarita and guacamole made tableside at Boudro’s, and brunch at The Guenther House – famed for serving enormous buttermilk biscuits. Built in 1860, it’s both a restaurant and a museum: admire the stained-glass windows and light fixtures, and shop for gifts at the on-site River Mill Store – it does a fine line in recherche gravy mixes and vintage-towel sets. There are more fabulous homes in the surrounding King William Historic District, if you’ve got spare time to wander further.

One hour southwest of the big city, just off Highway 377, you’ll roll into quaint Granbury which, for good reason, wins awards of the ‘Best Historic Small Town in America’ variety: it’s rich in both heritage and hospitality. Stay in one of the many B&Bs or inns here, or consider the RV parks, cabins and cottages. Spend the day shopping – Granbury Square has more than 40 unique outlets, plus the landmark Hood County Courthouse in ornate French Second Empire style (today, it’s a fascinating museum). If you’re in town on a Saturday afternoon, check out the popular Revolver Brewery – at 7 percent ABV, the Blood & Honey Texas Ale here is a hit. Before you leave, squeeze in a production at the renovated 1886 Opera House.

Palo Duro Canyon

Five hours west from the big city lies Texas’s answer to the Grand Canyon of Arizona . If you’re not camping or renting a cabin, consider staying in nearby Amarillo so you have plenty of time to take in the majestic beauty of this awesome spectacle – hit the trails early for that photogenic morning light. Palo Duro Canyon State Park has more than 30mi (48km) of marked trails to explore, either by hiking, mountain biking or horse riding. Nearby Elkins Ranch, a working cattle ranch, lays on Jeep tours and is steeped in Old West adventure and history. Of course, things are always bigger in Texas – you’ll find more than 2m exhibits at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum . From dinosaur relics to conquistador memorabilia, it’s all here in the largest history museum in Texas.

A few miles south of Tyler, Bullard is a town with an ace up its sleeve: the American Freedom Museum , on The Brook Hill School campus. The Hall of Presidents includes a signed document by every president from George Washington to Barack Obama. The Hall of Freedom chronicles the major conflicts the United States has been involved in since the Revolutionary War. It’s energy-sapping stuff, so make sure you’re based for the weekend 10 minutes northeast in Kiepersol, an estate winery, distillery, restaurant and B&B. Founded by South African native Pierre de Wet, it’s famed for quality and service. Try wine tastings at your leisure – tours take place at designated times, no reservations needed. You’ll also get to enjoy steak or seafood for dinner, surrounded by the two-story cellar lined with hundreds of bottles from around the world.

Founded in the 1850s, Pittsburg is a pretty little slice of Americana, with timber churches, chapels and a Commercial Historic District of brick buildings with storefronts in cast iron, wood and glass. Beyond town is Daingerfield State Park , home to the Rustling Leaves Nature Trail, where you can hike, camp and fish in the shadow of vividly colored maples, gums and oaks. The big attraction – particularly if you like a tipple – is nearby Los Pinos Ranch Vineyards . Book the weekend special and you’ll get live jazz on the expansive patio. See, too, if you can get onto one of the cooking classes with acclaimed chef Enam Chowdhury. Aim to bed down in one of the cottages at Lavender Mermaid Farm B&B , with its lavender chocolates, lavender scones at (gourmet) breakfast and even lavender bath products. No need to worry about having a good night’s sleep; inhale those aromas and you’ll be out for the count.

Every Texan spring road trip has to feature those floral favorites – bluebonnets. And where better to be at one with the state flower than in Ennis – the Official Bluebonnet City of Texas – half an hour southeast of Dallas on I-45? Each spring, the Ennis Garden Club ramps up the color scheme by hosting a 40mi (64km) mapped drive among horizons of the incredible blooms in the Bluebonnet Trails. If the motoring has got you all revved up, plug into more speed at the Texas Motorplex drag-racing facility or experience a stock-car race at Big O Speedway.

Wichita Falls

Just a cow-tail’s flick from the Texas/Oklahoma state border is the city of Wichita Falls . Although the city’s namesake natural waterfalls were washed away two centuries ago, you’ll love the other natural (and constructed) attractions including Lucy Park, River Bend Nature Center, Lake Wichita and Castaway Cove Waterpark. If you’re a history buff take a look around the Museum of North Texas History to learn more about the area. Meanwhile, fans of the squared circle should head over to the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum.

Tyler, an easy two hours’ drive east of Dallas on I-30, may not have the same mainstream mega-wattage as the Lonestar State’s major metropolises, but the Rose Capital of America is worthy of your weekend. The quaint brick-lined streets, charming family-owned shops and Texas-sized eats in vibrant downtown will make you feel at home. Tyler is one place where you should stop and smell the roses; figuratively and literally. The Azalea and Spring Flower Trail , as well as various rose gardens and nurseries, will tempt you to take it slowly and savor every breath of fresh Texas air.

Point your vehicle down I-45 from Dallas and in about an hour you’ll be saying hello to Corsicana. This city celebrates its history at every opportunity, hosting festivals and absorbing tours throughout the year. Every week, you’ll get the opportunity to sip a cocktail and support local businesses – that’ll be Mimosas at the Market. Meanwhile annual events such as the Best Little Airshow in Texas, Derrick Days and the Cotton Harvest Festival draw crowds from near and far. If you’re a competitive cyclist, here’s a date for your diary: the spring Tour of Corsicana is a race through downtown like no other.

14. Hill Top Retreat In Bastrop (3 hours and 19 minutes from Dallas)

Austin gets a lot of credit for being amazing, and for good reason, it totally is. But sometimes it is nice to step back away from the beaten path. So, for those that love Austin—and might even want to venture into town for a little shopping and sipping—but want a little something different (say, an affordable water view), consider this rental in Bastrop with hilltop views and a large game room. You are close to Bastrop River Company , Dinosaur Park , and 602 Brewing Company (for parents who survive the aforementioned Dinosaur Park).

15. The Willows Casa Grande In Fredericksburg (4 hours and 17 minutes from Dallas)

Head to Texas wine country for farm-to-table food and vineyards and this special rental, which was featured in both the New York Times and Parade. It’s an ideal place to return after a day of wine tasting. And make sure to bring some bottles back with you to enjoy on the front porch as you’re surrounded by nature. But might we suggest you head out at least one more time for a fancy dinner at Vaudeville ? (Just look at that caviar presentation on the dinner menu.)

16. Gage Hotel In Marathon (7 hours and 5 minutes from Dallas)

Surrounded by Big Bend Country, this hotel is one of those surreal places that feels like it is in its own little world. Set up an adventure through Big Bend National Park and then rest and recharge at the Gage Spa with an aromatherapeutic massage. Don’t leave without sipping your cocktail of choice at the iconic White Buffalo Bar. We suggest the Brush Fire which consists of Tito’s, Texas Paula Orange, lime juice, fresh jalapenos and is served up with a spicy salted rim.

17. Walden Retreats In Johnson City (4 hours, 3 minutes from Dallas)

A luxury safari tent overlooking the Pedernales River, this 96-acre property is the definition of privacy. Whether you are climbing Enchanted Rock, fishing for bass and carp, or headed to Garrison Brothers Bourbon, it is nice to “retreat” to a place that feels so uniquely residential and ranch-like.

18. Hotel Lulu In Round Top (3 hours and 43 minutes from Dallas)

Round Top? OMG like Round Top , Round Top? Yes! That Round Top. And while you better hold your breath and pray if you plan to book these highly coveted quarters during antique-show weeks, it is still a darling place to get away during the other weekends of the year. The property recommends Mandito’s margaritas and Tex-Mex on the patio after exploring both Henkel and Rolland Square. And who are we to argue with that?

19. St. Francisville Inn In Saint Francisville, Louisiana (6 hours and 8 minutes from Dallas)

Want to step back into yesteryear? W e mean, really step back? Head to this town of less than 2,000 that will hit you with the nostalgia bug as quickly as the Louisiana Heat. The Inn, owned by Jim Johnston and Brandon Branch, represents a simpler time. Looking for antiques? Shop the darling Sage Hill Gifts. Consider yourself a green thumb? You’ll adore Afton Villa Gardens and its 25 acres of manicured beauty.

20. Thompson San Antonio–riverwalk (4 hours and 19 minutes from Dallas)

It’s another big city but with its own unique twist thanks to its Spanish history and thriving downtown that has a literal river running through it. What we love most about this new-ish property is the fact that while it is technically on the famous San Antonio Riverwalk, it is tucked in a peaceful part of the city center. We suggest spending the morning at the spa followed by lunch and lounging at the pool. After getting cleaned up in what just might be the biggest bathtubs in town, it's time for cocktails at The Moon’s Daughter which is serving up the best sunset sips in town. Craving a little culture? Head next door to the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts followed by dinner at Brasserie Mon Chou Chou at the Historic Pearl.

Family road trips have been rising lately and will continue throughout the year. Families want to get away, so taking road trips seems the best option. Summer is a great time to make these quick family weekend getaways near DFW happen. There’s plenty of time this year to take a family getaway. I’ve got some pretty neat places to show you that are only 3 hrs or fewer from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Read on for a great family vacation!

Tiny Cabin Family Weekend Getaways Near DFW

Today, I’m sharing family weekend getaways I’ve been on and a few my friends have been on that are worth mentioning. You’ll want to grab a drink and a notepad because these places are too good not to visit. To all nature lovers – get your mountain bikes ready!

1. Larue, TX (East Texas)

First up is Piney Woods Getaway Cabins in Larue, TX. I took my son and mom last month, and we had a blast. Before we left home, I scoured the area for fun activities. It seems like the perfect place to explore nature and hike, but I was looking for another type of adventure that my son and I could do together. I found the perfect adventure …and it’s my favorite. 2. Cleburne, TX – A Quick Family Weekend From Fort Worth

I enjoyed being hosted in Cleburne for a weekend with my tag-a-long.

Each weekend getaway near DFW mentioned here would be a great place for you and your family to take and leave the madness behind. Most are under 3 hours, with a few slightly over, but not by much. Not bad for a road trip. And, if the kids get bored, you can always play family games in the car .

3. Best Day Ever Ranch, Whitewright, TX

When we were there in 2016, the cabins were newly updated and cute! Cabins are small, with steep stairs to a loft; however, other options do not have steep stairs. My favorite thing was having coffee on the porch the next morning. Someone close by was playing country music, and it just all seemed so serial. If you get the chance, ask to see the treehouse cabin. The bathtub alone is worth renting.

Each rental gets a golf cart to use; sorry, no golf club or golf courses – but who needs one? But the best part is that most of their cabins have an outdoor shower—incredible. BDER also offers an event center perfect for weddings, an incredible outdoor gazebo, and lots of room to roam for your guests. You have to read about this place. 4. Getaway Tiny Cabins – Navasota, TX

You’ll find another Getaway Cabin in the small town of Navasota (close to Houston), just a short drive from Dallas. We went, and it was the best way to hang out in nature for my kid – read about it here – so fun – Tiny Modern Camping .

5. Staycation at Gaylord Texan Resort

If you know me, you know I love spending time at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, TX. This past summer, I was invited to stay the night and enjoy Summerfest activities and Paradise Springs. I decided to ask a couple of my girlfriends to come along. It was also my birthday, so my time there was extra special. We met so many Texas families there. I wished I’d brought my kid.

Have you taken your family to the Gaylord Texan Summerfest they have every summer? It’s wild and fun. It changes every year, and they had Bingo, Canvas painting, and more this year. The girls and I also took some time to enjoy the outdoor resort pool. We could get into quite a few activities in the short time we were there. It’s a memory down in the books for me.

Of course, the Gaylord Texan is only minutes from Dallas and Fort Worth — a staycation I always recommend with the family.

6. A Great Getaway in Frisco, TX

Oh, what fun we two had in Frisco. Plus, I drove a 2021 Cadillac Escalade Platinum media car, and we were going in style. Frisco is one of the best places to hang out for a day or weekend in North Texas – complete with live music, a fun downtown area on Main Street, fun escape rooms, and more. 7. Dinosaur Valley State Park

Glen Rose, TX, has a beautiful state park to spend the day or a weekend with hiking trails, picnic tables, a playground, geocaching, and dinosaur tracks! Dinosaur Valley State Park is one of the best day trips I’ve been on with kids. But spending a fun weekend camping out would also be fun. If you have the time, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is not too far. It’s great for young kids, but older kids will like it too. Remember that the dinosaur tracks are most visible when there are low water levels. Oh, the park has a store with supplies, some food, and even a small gift shop.

8. Quick Family Weekend Getaways Near DFW – Oklahoma

Just three hours north on Interstate 35 N in Oklahoma City is Bricktown and a couple of prominent Districts with something for tourists to see and do. Last year, my son and I went on a hosted trip and had the best time cruising around the city. Every minute of our weekend getaway, we were busy trying to hit every district they had planned for us. We had an itinerary from Visit OKC to follow, so you know we were busy. Oh, and you have to see the purple penguins in the hotel and the white-water rapids ride we took – it scared the you-know-what out of me , but my son loved it. 9. Lake Texoma

A friend of mine and her family rented a cabin at Lake Texoma from Light House Marina. She told me she’s been cooped up too long at home and needed a quick weekend escape. Texhoma is less than 2 hrs from DFW and has been popular for years. I hear there’s great fishing to do. Esther told me their rented cabin had a full kitchen, bathroom, cable, and AC but that they wouldn’t go back there. They also rented a boat. Sounds fun to me.

10. Carlton Landing on Lake Eufaula

Then you have Carlton Landing on Lake Eufaula. Lake Eufaula is just under 3 hours from Dallas on Hwy 75. We had the pleasure of going there for a few nights in 2015. It was the first road trip we took where we were comped for two nights in a rental. See the fun we had >>>> Carlton Landing Lake Eufaula Weekend Escape . We haven’t been back, but I’m sure it’s even more beautiful, as they were just getting started with the Carlton Landing Community. I know they were adding a General Store, a School House, and even a Church in the community.

11. Broken Bow Cabins

Have you seen the houses you can rent in Broken Bow, Oklahoma? They are gorgeous! I saw a glimpse of a few on Instagram a while back. Then, I remembered my niece went there last year (in October). She and her family had a blast and said she would return in a heartbeat. Okay, so Broken Bow isn’t quite a quick family weekend getaway near DFW, more like 4 hours, but still, I’ve heard marvelous things about going there.

Mother-Daughter Road Trip to Broken Bow, OK

Another Mother-daughter trip is in the books for us. I try to take my mom on as many road trips as possible. She’s 82 and still likes to get out of the house and go sightseeing and on road trips, but she never goes alone, so she goes with me. Lucky me, I found another person to go to tasting rooms with. For a good wine-tasting afternoon, try any in Broken Bow – there are a few!

After seeing that my niece has been to Broken Bow twice, I’ve wanted to go for quite some time and find a place that offers hot tubs with every property and, of course, a full kitchen and a spacious dining room. We found it here – our Broken Bow road trip .

12. Turner Falls Park

Turner Falls is only an hour’s drive from my home. I can’t believe it took me this long to get there. I went when I was younger but haven’t been back since – shame on me.

Fort Worth is a quick getaway from Dallas with so much to offer! While the city is most known for the iconic Fort Worth Stockyards and western culture, I personally love exploring the modern downtown area and the museums even more than the Stockyards. The Fort Worth Stockyards host the world’s only year round rodeo, so anytime of year is fair game, but I recommend avoiding the heat of the summer months. If you want to visit during a fun event, Mayfest takes place in early May and has live music and activities for the whole family.

Things To Do in Fort Worth

• Climb down into the unique and picturesque Fort Worth Water Gardens, a water fountain that you can explore from giant steps!
• If you love art, make some time for visits to the Kimbell Art Museum and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. The museums are very impressive!
• For the classic Fort Worth cowboy experience, the Fort Worth Stockyards are a must-visit! Here you can have a drink in a saloon, attend the rodeo and see the daily cattle drive.
• If you love street art, take a stroll through the colorful Inspiration Alley.
• The Fort Worth Botanic Garden is a beautiful place to explore the grounds and spend an afternoon.

Denison is a small town that hugs the border of Texas and Oklahoma. It is known for being the birthplace of former president Dwight Eisenhower but I have been impressed by the art scene, the vibrant downtown Main Street and the nature nearby.

• Explore colorful Main Street and the many shops and restaurants. Visit the boutique 410 Collective for gifts and coffee, the Incubator Rail Yard food hall for a variety of food options and 1880 Ice House for patio seating.
• Eisenhower State Park is right on Lake Texoma and offers hiking, OHV trails and swimming. Rocky cliffs border the lake and make for beautiful scenery.
• If you like history, make a stop at the Eisenhower birthplace, where you can tour the home where Dwight Eisenhower was born.
• Waterloo lake regional park is another great park for hiking. Here you can hike to a cave or enjoy peaceful views of the lake.

Glen Rose is a charming small town that is home to one of my favorite north Texas state parks: Dinosaur Valley! During your trip to Glen Rose, you can explore the trails, swim in the Paluxy River and enjoy the peaceful scenery of the area.

Visit during warm weather to make the most out of swimming in the Paluxy River! April is also a fantastic time to visit to see the Texas bluebonnets.

• Dinosaur Valley State Park has miles of hiking trails and is a great place to swim. You can also see real dinosaur tracks right along the Paluxy River.
• Explore historic downtown Glen Rose, where you’ll find the Somerville County Museum and a variety of shops and restaurants.
• Climb over giant boulders and go swimming at Big Rocks Park, located right next to town.
• Go on a safari at Fossil Rim, a wildlife center focused on conservation.

Tyler is a small city in the East Texas Piney Woods with a great mix of restaurants and cultural activities. In Tyler, you can enjoy the beautiful downtown, go hiking nearby and visit interesting museums and gardens.

• Tyler Rose Garden is 14-acres and has over 500 types of roses and other plants. Visit in October to see the roses in bloom and to attend the Rose Garden Festival.
• If you are interested in planes, be sure to visit the Historic Aviation Memorial Museum.

Waco can be an easy day trip from Dallas , but it’s worth spending an entire weekend to see more of what the city has to offer.

• The Magnolia Silos are an iconic place to visit during your trip to Waco! Visit for a pastry and some shopping if you are a fan of the HGTV show ‘Fixer Upper.’
• Waco is home to an impressive collection of mammoth fossils! Visit Mammoth National Monument to learn about how the mammoths who roamed the area thousands of years ago.
• Did you know that Dr Pepper originated in Texas? Visit the Dr Pepper Museum to learn all about the history and to taste some unique soda flavors!
• If you enjoy hiking, visit Cameron Park for miles of trails and views overlooking the Brazos River.

Weekend Trips Under 4 Hours from Dallas

Paris, Texas is a small town east of Dallas that holds the title of the second largest “Paris” in the world. The town has some beautiful architecture and some quirky attractions that make it a great place for a relaxing weekend getaway.

For a trendy place to stay in Paris, be sure to check out the 1st Street Lofts on Airbnb, the single bedroom lofts are beautifully decorated in an art deco style. For more options, there are a variety of hotels to choose from in Paris .

• Another quirky and hidden gem is the Jesus statue wearing cowboy boots in Evergreen Cemetery. It’s a unique and quick stop!
• Visit the beautiful Culbertson Fountain and take a stroll around downtown to discover the local shops and restaurants.
• For hiking nearby, take a drive out of town to Cooper Lake State Park or Bonham State Park.

Salado is a small town near Austin full of outdoor activities, wineries, history and more. There is plenty to do for a romantic weekend trip or weekend getaway with kids.

You can’t go wrong with visiting The Woodlands year round. Like most of Texas, it gets very hot in the summer, but you can cool off in the resort lazy river or kayaking out on the water. The Woodlands has mild winters and beautiful weather in the Spring and Fall.

• Try out the Texas TreeVentures Rope Course and navigate through various challenges while safely in a harness.
• Kayak on Lake Woodlands or on The Waterway.
• Take a walk along the Waterway and admire all of the various art benches.
• Hike in George Mitchell Nature Preserve.

College Station is most known as the home of Texas A&M University, but has more to offer with nearby wineries and great restaurants. Stay at a unique lodge outside of town and explore the surrounding countryside a bit in addition to the city.

Oklahoma City is a vibrant city that often feels overshadowed and forgotten because of cities like Austin. However, I find it to be an underrated city full of amazing art and history. The capital of Oklahoma has a lot going on and is great for either couples or families for a fantastic weekend trip.

I found Oklahoma City to be an underrated destination! If you love exploring cities, definitely add OKC to your list.

• Explore Factory Obscura: a large, interactive art exhibit! There are several rooms that create a unique and immersive art experience, where you can search for clues, touch the art and discover unique passageways. If you have been to any of the Meow Wolf locations, this is very similar!
• Enjoy some unique and quirky Route 66 stops like the Arcadia Round Barn and Pop’s Arcadia.
• Explore Bricktown for family fun like mini golf, local brews at Bricktown Brewery and more.
• Experience the beauty of Myriad botanical gardens, a botanic garden with amazing architecture. The glass, cylindrical building houses a tropical conservatory and there is an interesting LED lightshow at night.

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge offers amazing hiking and wildlife viewing near DFW. The park is home to bison, prairie dogs, longhorn and other wildlife that you can easily see from your car. There are also amazing views and hiking trails for all difficulties.

I recommend looking for a cabin that suits your needs right outside the park in Medicine Park . If they are booked up, the nearby town of Lawton-Fort Sill has several hotel options as well.

Copper Breaks is one of the only Texas state parks to be named an international dark sky park, meaning it is amazing for stargazing! The park also has some great, short hiking trails and is a great place to relax in nature.

Colorado Bend State Park is an amazing hiking and camping destination located in the northern part of Texas Hill Country. The park is most known for Gorman Falls, an impressive 70 foot waterfall, but is also an amazing place to swim in the summer months.

You can either camp inside the park or find a campsite or cabin nearby. The closest cabins to the park are located right outside the park at Bend General Store.

• Hike the 3 mile moderate trail to see Gorman Falls.

Houston is one of the biggest cities in Texas and has so much to offer! It is most known for its NASA Space Center and ties to the oil industry, but is also full of many cultural institutions and unique activities.

I recommend finding a centrally located hotel to suit your needs in Houston. Hotel Ylem and the adult-only Houston Towers Inn are mid-range options with unique decor and architecture.

Houston is a nice winter destination because there are several great holiday activities around the city! If you can’t stand high temperatures, avoid the summer.

• The Orange Show is an eclectic outdoor folk-art experience that features a pond, a stage, a museum and more made up of found objects.
• Essentially a branch of the Orange Show, the Beer can house is also worth visiting. It is a home made up of 50,000 recycled beer cans! Tours are available to learn about the unique attraction.
• Visit Discovery Green, an urban park that holds events and has something to offer for the whole family.

Buchanan Lake is a Texas Hill Country lake that is the perfect gateway to a variety of natural spots in the area. Explore the lake, hike in nearby Inks Lake or venture underground for a tour of Longhorn Caverns. This area has a great variety for those seeking both adventure and relaxation.

Hot Springs, Arkansas is a unique town with a storied history, thermal hot springs and hiking trails. It is also home to Hot Springs National Park, the closest US National Park to Dallas! Spend a weekend exploring Bathhouse Row and enjoying everything the area has to offer.

For a historic and centrally located hotel, look at The Waters Hot Springs , a neoclassical building within walking distance of the national park. For an extra unique stay, check out the Hot Springs Treehouses outside of town.

• Admire and explore the various bathhouses on the bathhouse row. Be sure to check out the national park visitor center and Superior Bathhouse Brewery.

• Hike some of the many trails in the national park and take in the views at the Hot Springs Mountain Tower.
• Wander around Garvan Woodland Gardens and be sure to visit the Anthony Chapel and the Bob and Sunny Evans Tree House.

While Hot Springs National Park is much different than most of the other US National Parks, it is the closest national park to Dallas! It is also the only US national park with a brewery inside of it.

San Antonio is the most visited city in Texas for good reason! With attractions like the riverwalk and the Alamo, there is something to do for everyone in this Texas Hill Country city. San Antonio is full of culture, delicious food and so much history.

• Walk along the San Antonio Downtown Riverwalk or take a boat ride to see the surrounding shops and restaurants from the water!
• The Alamo is an iconic place to visit if you’re interested in Texas history. The site is free to visit with a timed entry ticket reserved in advance.
• While most people only go to the Alamo, I personally love visiting the other San Antonio Missions as well! There are four more missions that make up the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park. They are all unique with beautiful architecture and accessible via bike or by car.
• The San Antonio Japanese garden is free and quite impressive! It is a beautiful place for photography and full of waterfalls, bridges and exotic plants.
• The Pearl Brewery District is a vibrant area with a variety of restaurants and shops. On the weekends, you can visit a farmer’s market and sit on the lawn to enjoy your food!

Beaumont is a southeast Texas town that grew as a result of striking oil in the early 1900’s. Today, the city is full of art and culture and has several great natural areas to explore nearby.

There are several hotels in Beaumont, but I recommend the Holiday Inn Beaumont Plaza for a beautiful stay with great value.

• Stroll through the Antique Stores and other shops on Calder Avenue and look for murals in downtown Beaumont.

Galveston is an island located south of Houston with beaches, a quaint downtown and great nightlife. It makes for a fun vacation destination and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy views of the ocean.

Like most places on this list, you’ll experience the best weather in the spring and the fall. Keep in mind that the most likely time to experience a tropical storm is in August and September, so you may want to avoid those months.

• Spend some time on historic Pleasure Pier, which is home to fun roller coasters and carnival games for the whole family.
• Explore the downtown area known as The Strand. I recommend stopping at MOD for coffee, La King’s Confectionery for ice cream or candy and getting a psychic reading done at The Witchery.
• Explore an aquarium or a rainforest inside of giant glass pyramids at Moody Gardens.
• Go paddling or hiking in Galveston Island State Park. (Be sure to bring bug spray!)

Tulsa is an Oklahoma city known for its art deco architecture, outdoor culture and great urban areas. The city is also a stop on Route 66 and a center for the oil industry.

Caprock Canyons is a West Texas state park that is home to bison, prairie dogs and amazing hiking. The park has a remote feeling, amazing red-rock views and is a great destination for camping and backpacking.

Caprock Canyons is a great location for a beginner backpack trip - I did my first backpacking trip here and camped at the North Prong hike out campsite.

Take a road trip to three very unique Oklahoma state parks, Gloss Mountain, Little Sahara and the Salt Plains! The Gloss Mountains are a small mountain range whose minerals mimic a shiny glass surface, Little Sahara is a 1,600-acre park full of sand dunes and the Salt Plains feature a saltwater lake and plains of salt.

Bentonville is a city in the Northwest corner of Arkansas known for being a mountain biking destination, having a world class art scene and being the birthplace of Walmart. The city has an amazing mix of both art and outdoor activities, and is great to visit for couples and families alike.

When to Visit Bentonville

Bentonville is nice to visit year round, but visit in the spring or fall for the best weather.

Things to do in Bentonville

• Go mountain biking at one of the many trails around town. I recommend renting bikes from Spoke Adventures and exploring the Slaughter Pen trail system.
• Visit the many breweries around town, such as Bike Rack Brewing and New Province Brewing.
• See the amazing, free art at Crystal Bridges and The Momentary.

Mount Magazine is an Arkansas state park that is home to the highest point in the state. The park offers incredible views of the surrounding valleys and has several overlooks and hiking trails to enjoy. For more views nearby, Mount Nebo is another state park with amazing views and great trails.

Where To Stay in Mount Magazine

Mount Magazine Lodge is a beautiful building built in the “parkitecture” architecture. The rooms have large balconies where you can enjoy the view directly from your room.

When to visit Mount Magazine

Visit Mount Magazine in the fall for gorgeous fall foliage and cooler weather.

Things to do in Mount Magazine

• Hike to the tallest point in Arkansas, but do not expect a view here!
• Drive to all of the various overlooks in the park.
• Catch the sunset from the Mount Magazine Lodge.
• Hike the easy North Rim trail in Mount Magazine.
• Visit nearby Mount Nebo and hike the rim trail.

Garner is an incredible Texas Hill Country State Park known for caves, amazing views and the picturesque and refreshing Frio River.

Where To Stay at Garner

Either camp inside the park or stay at the Inn Between just outside the park. The Inn Between has eclectic and colorful cabins full of art and personal touches.

When to visit Garner

Visit during the summer if you plan to float the Frio River and want to feel refreshed, or visit in the fall to see some beautiful foliage.

Things To Do in Garner

• Hike to the top of Mt Old Baldy via a half mile strenuous trail.
• Climb down into a cave at Crystal Cave.
• Float in the Frio River.

Petit Jean was the first state park established in Arkansas and full of incredible beauty. See the impressive Cedar Falls, hike to natural bridges and caves and enjoy the many viewpoints around the park.

Where to Stay in Petit Jean

Stay at the cozy lodge inside of Petit Jean or camp inside the park.

When to Visit Petit Jean

Visit Petit Jean in the fall to see beautiful fall foliage. It is also great to visit in the spring and summer.

Things to do in Petit Jean

• Hike down to the base of 95-foot high Cedar Falls or see it from above a short walk from the parking lot.
• Hike the Seven Hollow trails, the Bear Cave trail and the Rock House trail.
• Visit the many viewpoints overlooking the valley, such as Stouts Overlook and the overlooks on Red Bluffs road.
• Visit Petit Jean Coffeehouse right outside the park.

Eureka Springs is a unique Arkansas town known for its historic Victorian architecture and natural springs. The waters were thought to have healing properties in the 1800’s and the town quickly rose in popularity as a resort town. Today, the town is a great destination for architecture, shopping and outdoor activities nearby.

Where to stay in Eureka Springs

For a unique and peaceful experience, check out Iris Hill Glamping right outside of town. If you want to be within walking distance of everything, there are several hotels and bed & breakfasts in town .

When to visit Eureka Springs

Eureka Springs is a beautiful destination for seeing colorful foliage in the fall.

Things to do in Eureka Springs

• Explore the many shops and restaurants in downtown Eureka Springs. I recommend Mud Street Cafe and the Balcony Restaurant & Bar in the Basin Park Hotel.
• Visit the gorgeous glass church Thorncrown Chapel.
• See some unique rock formations at Pivot Rock and Natural Bridge.
• If you’re interested in the paranormal, take a ghost tour at the Crescent Hotel.
• Visit the strange and fascinating Quigley’s Castle, a home where fossils, arrowheads, crystals and more adorn the outside walls.

Buffalo National River

Buffalo National River is an area of Arkansas with amazing hiking trails with scenic views, amazing hiking trails and is even home to elk!

Where to Stay at Buffalo National River

Stay at Cliff House Inn or Overlook Bed & Breakfast for amazing views! This area is also great for camping.

When to visit Buffalo National River

Visit in the spring if you are interested in paddling on the Upper Buffalo River!

Things to do at Buffalo National River

• Look for elk in the Boxley Valley Historic District. You are most likely to see them at sunrise and sunset!
• Hike the many trails in the area. I recommend the Centerpoint to Goat trail and the Lost Valley trail.
• Take in the views at the Grand Canyon of Arkansas.
• Go kayaking on the Buffalo River.
