W elsh comedian Rhod Gilbert is set to return to the stage with a massive new tour after a challenging battle with cancer. The comedian has announced a tour titled Rhod Gilbert and the Giant Grapefruit, scheduled to include over 100 shows across the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2024 and 2025.

Rhod Gilbert took to Instagram on Monday, September 25, 2023, to share his excitement and gratitude:

"After the year I've had, it's wonderful to be alive and going back on the road. I can't wait to get back on stage, and I'm ready to get way too personal about life's recent ups and downs. When life gives you lemons, you have to squeeze them 'til the comedy juice flows, so prepare for some dark but funny s***."

Rhod Gilbert's journey back to the comedy stage has been nothing short of remarkable. In 2022, he faced a life-altering diagnosis of cancer, which required him to undergo a regimen of treatments, including surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy.

Through it all, he maintained a positive attitude and never lost his sense of humor. Earlier this month, Rhod Gilbert expressed his deep gratitude to the National Health Service (NHS) and the Velindre Cancer Centre for their unwavering support throughout his battle with cancer . He credited their dedication and care as instrumental in his recovery and ability to return to the spotlight.

Rhod Gilbert's tour will begin in Yeovil and end in Dublin

Rhod Gilbert will kick off the month-long tour with his Yeovil concert, scheduled for January 13, 2024. After performing across multiple cities, the comedian will finish his massive tour with a final show in Dublin on October 25, 2025.

Rhod Gilbert revealed he was heading back on tour with a massive lineup of dates that are set to run well into 2025.

Titled Rhod Gilbert And The Giant Grapefruit, the comedian, 54, will start performing gigs next year in January 2024 and tell his last joke in November of the following year.

He shared that he planned to complete 110 dates by the end of the run with his agent confirming: ‘It’s a show about navigating the dark bits and turning life’s giant grapefruits into something approaching lemonade’.

Three of his stops include the London Eventim Apollo, Croydon Fairfield Halls, Bromley Churchill Theatre.

Ahead of his headliner, Rhod explained: ‘After the year I’ve had it’s wonderful to be alive and going back on the road.

‘I can’t wait to get back on stage and I’m ready to get way too personal about life’s recent ups and downs.

‘When life gives you lemons, you have to squeeze them ’til the comedy juice flows, so prepare for some dark but funny s***.’

The star’s agent also outlined: ‘This new live show sees Rhod back on stage doing what he does best.

‘Candid, hilarious and uplifting; it’s a show about navigating the dark bits and turning life’s giant grapefruits into something approaching lemonade.’

He explained where the fruit analogy came from and revealed: ‘Previously, Rhod was dealing with some pretty pungent life citrus, and an idiot called John.

‘Little did he know that things were about to turn even more sour… But Rhod’s not bitter; he’s bouncing back and feeling remarkably zesty.

‘Hilariously dark, passionate and way too personal, this is classic Gilbert, squeezing every last drop out of life’s latest curveballs… with a little help from an old adversary.’

Rhod’s last tour – The Book of John – began in 2019 and ran until 2023, however, was interrupted by delays due to the pandemic.

Forced to postpone dates to adhere to government regulations at the time, the star was also delivered a devastating blow when he was told he had cancer.

Rhod Gilbert is to tour a new stand-up show, Rhod Gilbert And The Giant Grapefruit . The 110 dates will start in January 2024 and run through to November 2025 .

His agents say: "Rhod's last tour, The Book of John , kicked off in 2019 and ran until 2023 (with extra dates added due to overwhelming demand, covid delays, and further postponements due to Rhod's cancer diagnosis). After a six-year break, Wales’ best known stand-up is getting back on stage.

Rhod Gilbert last embarked on a comedy tour when he discussed at length his decision to have a Battenberg cake tattooed on his back.

Now, after a number of different TV projects including hosting Never Mind the Buzzcocks and The Apprentice: You’re Fired, as well as Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience, the Welsh comedian is returning to his comedy roots.

Rhod has announced more than 50 live dates on a tour of the UK and is of course coming home to Wales, next year.

His Welsh dates include two nights at Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena on Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10 and two at Swansea's Grand Theatre Wednesday, June 19 and Thursday, June 20 .

Rhod will kick-off the tour at the William Aston Hall in Wrexham on Saturday, February 2 . He will also perform at Llandudno's Venue Cymru on Wednesday, May 1.

The new show, called The Book of John, tells the story of a man Rhod met who changed his life. The comedian announced the show on his Facebook page in his own inimitable way, writing: "A lot has happened to me in the last few years. And you’ll be glad to hear almost all of it was s**t.

"Frankly, I’ve been in no mood to get on stage...‘Til now. 'Cos just when I thought I’d hit rock bottom, and things couldn’t get any worse, I met a bloke called John."

The Carmarthen-born stand-up, who turns 50 later this year, says it won’t be difficult getting back into the old routine, despite admitting that he thought his stand-up career was over.

“I can’t wait to get back on tour,” said Rhod, who is currently in South Korea with his wife, writer Sian Harries, whose film Neck Face is showing at a film festival there.

“To be honest, I never thought I’d go back to stand-up - it’s been six years,” the comic told WalesOnline.

Despite a self-imposed stand-up hiatus, Rhod has made the odd appearance on stage since 2012.

He’s hosted a number of charity gigs across Wales to raise thousands of pounds for good causes including Velindre Cancer Centre, and in April he appeared at the Machynlleth Comedy Festival for the first time since 2011.

He played three one-hour shows at the festival, all of which sold out within hours.

Labelled a ‘very early work in progress’, the 60 minute show showcased a more mature, less angry Rhod, where he dealt with the minutiae of married life and the pros and cons of trying to start a family.

He has now honed that work in progress into a full tour show that is set to take theatres and arenas by storm right across the UK next year.

“Doing a charity show last year alongside Michael McIntyre, Greg Davies, Lloyd Langford, Angela Barnes and Nick Helm made me realise how much I’ve missed it,” added Rhod.

“I had to write some stuff for that show so it kind of just went from there.

“I’ve been doing some work in progress gigs and basically having a ball; it’s like I haven’t been away.

“The Book of John is about a bloke I met.......called John. The rest of the details are in the show.”

Welsh comedian , Rhod Gilbert has announced a series of gigs next year after six years away from the stage.

Having concentrated on panel shows and TV projects such as Never Mind the Buzzcocks and The Apprentice: You’re Fired, as well as Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience, the comedian has decided to return to stand up.

The 50 date tour will kick-off the tour at the William Aston Hall in Wrexham on Saturday, February 2 , and will feature five dates in his native Wales.

Pre-sale tickets will go on sale 18th July, and tickets will go on general sale on 20th July. You can get them from Ticketmaster here .
