You will always want to carry daily essentials. Don’t depend upon the shops in the place you are visiting; they might not carry what you need or might not keep the specific brands or items you desire.

The daily essentials include:

Toothbrushes and toothpastes

A small travel sized face wash and shampoo. Shampoo packets can also be carried.

Hand Sanitizer and Paper Soap

Facial Wipes

Shaving kits or trimmers

Once you have packed these basics, you need to decide what clothing you will take with you. This decision needs to be made in keeping with the weather of the place you are travelling to. Check the weather for the days you will be in the location and decide accordingly. Ooty has an ever-changing weather, it can rain any time in the hills, so one should go prepared. General rule of thumb- pack light for the summer and pack warm for the winter months.

Summer Essentials:

Light clothing

A light jacket (in case of temperature dips in the evening)

SPF (the mountain sun can be harsh)

Two pairs of sandals or slippers (one is a spare pair for emergencies)

Winter Essentials:

Two to three sweaters (depending upon how long you stay)

Plenty of pairs of warm socks

An all-purpose shawl

Here is a list of things you must carry when heading over to Ooty, regardless of the season:

A raincoat or umbrella

A handy mobile case

You should also carry some things with which you can entertain yourself during the journey from Bangalore to Ooty, and during the nights. These can include:

A book you have been meaning to read

Headphones and whichever music player you prefer

Magazines and newspapers

Also carry some snacks along on the journey to Ooty because not all travel mediums sell snacks and beverages.

How to Plan the Best Road Trip from Bangalore to Ooty in 2023: Complete Guide

December 24, 2022

Follow us on

In a nutshell: what you'll find in this article.

If you’re planning a road trip from Bangalore to Ooty, then you’re in the right place. In this guide, we will discuss everything you need to know about this amazing road trip, from the route you’ll be taking to the things you should pack to the best places to stop along the way. Whether you’re an experienced driver or a novice, this guide will ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable journey. So, let’s dive in!

Things to keep in mind

Planning a road trip to Ooty from Bangalore requires some careful considerations. While the entire trip is estimated to take about 6-7 hours, this does not mean you can rush through it – instead, you want to make sure you are taking a safe and comfortable journey.

Here are some things to keep in mind when planning your road trip:

– Determine your vehicle: Before you plan your route, decide what type of vehicle you want to use.       You may want to rent out a car that has enough space for all passengers and their belongings, or       stock up on fuel if you are taking a two-wheeler.

– Ensure safe driving practices: Always maintain the speed limit and other rules of the road while driving. It is important that everyone in the car is following these rules as well. Make sure everyone is wearing seatbelts at all times and no one is tampering with their cellphones while the vehicle is in motion.

– Plan frequent rest stops: It can be tiring to drive for extended periods of time, so plan stops along the way every couple of hours or so for refreshments or sightseeing. This will break up long drives and help refocus so that everyone in the car stays energized throughout the journey.

– Research your route: Plot out your route beforehand so that it’s easier during the actual travel day to get from Bangalore to Ooty without any unexpected detours or confusing roads zigzagging toward other destinations instead. According to Google Maps, this is the best route for Bangalore to ooty road trip.

– Budget accordingly: Depending on how many people will be travelling in one car, budget           accordingly for food, fuel and accommodation if necessary once you reach Ooty – be aware of     applicable tolls as well!

Accommodation

Accommodation is an important part of any road trip, and this is especially true when it comes to taking a road trip from Bangalore to Ooty. There are a few different options available, ranging from budget hotels to luxury resorts. The best option depends on your budget and personal preference. Let’s take a look at some of the accommodation options available in Bangalore and Ooty.

Where to stay

When looking for accommodation, there are many options that offer various quality and comfort levels. From luxury hotels to basic hostels, there is something to suit every preference and budget. For those who prefer more independent arrangements, there are apartments, villas and cottages available in many locations.

Hostels generally come with a variety of benefits like 24-hour reception and on-site dining facilities. This can be a great option if you’re looking for easy access to tourist attractions or transportation networks. Hostels often have the added benefit of being cheaper than hotels or other self-catered accommodation solutions.

Apartments offer more independence and privacy than traditional hostels or hotels might allow. This can be great for those who like to have their own space but don’t want the costs associated with renting an individual home or villa. Many apartments come fully furnished with all the necessary kitchen utensils as well as other amenities like televisions and air conditioners. Villas can vary greatly in size and usually allow you to enjoy spacious grounds with luxury amenities including private pools, BBQ areas and onsite restaurants/bars if available.

Cottages are typically private dwellings within holiday resorts or parks where you get your own private gardens and front porch – perfect for virtual getaways! Cottages often come with added bonuses such as hot tubs, pet friendly options, laundry facilities and Wi-Fi access throughout the cottage complex itself making it easier to stay connected while away from home!

Budget-friendly options

Finding a place to stay while travelling can be a stressful experience, especially on a budget! Thankfully, there are some great budget-friendly options available .

Hostels offer communal living spaces, often with shared kitchens and bathrooms. It’s worth checking extra services such as free Wi-Fi and laundry facilities. These are popular with solo travelers who want to meet other people and enjoy greater security than camping.

Self-catering apartments give you the flexibility to cook your own meals but at a cost that beats hotel rates for large groups or families. Airbnb rentals make this an even more affordable option, as you can specify how close you want to be located to the sights and save money through shared bathrooms or dormitory style sleeping arrangements.

Camping is an increasingly popular option for those wanting the outdoors experience without breaking the bank. Although accommodation may be free from most sites, bear in mind that services such as hot showers may incur an additional fee!

Luxury options

There has been an increasing demand for luxury accommodation in recent years and there is now a wide range of options available. From exclusive five-star hotels to luxurious private villas, luxury accommodation offers a unique experience for travelers of all types.

The defining characteristic of luxury accommodation is its superior amenities, unique settings and high levels of personal service. Luxury hotel rooms offer features such as lavish bedding, en-suite bathrooms, patented toiletries, WiFi access and plasma TVs along with other modern amenities aimed at providing maximum comfort and convenience. Private villas also offer guests exceptional amenities with high-spec kitchens and generous recreational areas.

When choosing a luxury option, it’s important to ensure that all services offered meet your expectations in terms of quality and personalization. Luxury means something different to everyone so do your research before booking any destination – find out what the essence of the local culture is, read reviews from past guests or contact a travel consultant to get tailored advice. Make sure you feel comfortable spending your vacation dollars at the particular destination you select – after all, you want your stay to be as enlightening and memorable as it is enjoyable!

Transportation

For a Bangalore to Ooty road trip you will need to consider how you will get to Ooty. You will have a few different transportation options depending on your budget and preferences. Bus and train are the two most popular modes of transportation, and each has their own advantages and disadvantages. This section will cover the different transportation options available for a road trip from Bangalore to Ooty.

Public transport options

Public transport options are an important factor to consider when planning a road trip. For travelers heading from Bangalore to Ooty, there are multiple modes of public transport available for the journey.

Bus: There are multiple buses which can take travellers from Bangalore to Ooty, on both State and private runs. The journey takes around 6-7 hours and depending on the type of bus chosen, amenities can range from A/C to regular seat-only service.

Train: There is no direct train connectivity from Bangalore to Ooty, but travellers can opt for a train ride up till Mettupalayam (around 80 km away). From here, connecting onward buses or cabs can be taken for travelling the rest of the distance.

Air: Multiple flights connect Bangalore with Coimbatore (the nearest airport to Ooty), which is around 120 km away. Onward buses and cabs can then be used for travelling between Coimbatore and Ooty.

Car rental services

Car rental services offer individuals and business travelers the convenience of having access to vehicles without the full-time responsibility of ownership. There are a variety of car rental services available, each with its own features, rules, and benefits. It is important to compare options and choose the one that is most suitable for your needs.

The most common type of car rental service is a short-term rental from an agency such as Hertz, Avis, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Alamo Rent A Car or National Car Rental. These agencies generally allow you to reserve a vehicle for periods ranging from one hour to several weeks. Rentals come in all sizes – from sedan cars and minivans to SUVs and luxury vehicles – so you can find something suited to your requirements. Some agencies also offer special discounts or loyalty programs that may enhance your savings or get you higher value services.

Longer-term leasing options which generally allow you to have access to a vehicle on a month-by-month basis may also be available through these same car rental companies. Longer lease times may give you more freedom when it comes time to upgrade or return the car as there is less pressure involved with this type of contract option. Renewal terms will be set at the start with these leases, and they could include restrictions like total kilometer allowances so be sure to read carefully when signing any paperwork pertaining to this agreement.

Lastly — you can often rent cars from individuals who just want someone else driving their vehicle instead of them during that time frame! This method allows people who don’t want the red tape associated with major corporations for their rentals access to vehicles and offers both parties increased financial rewards too! Be sure that if you opt for this type of service (for example Turo) that all contracts are in writing – including damage waivers – before agreeing in case either party needs clarification down the line about what was originally agreed upon.

Taxi services

Taxi services are one of the most popular forms of transportation, offering convenient and reliable access to destinations in most major cities and towns. Numerous taxi companies provide efficient, cost-effective and safe transportation to passengers. When booking a taxi service, you can choose from various methods including phone reservations, online bookings, direct hire or hailing cabs on the street.

Taxi services are available 24 hours a day, so travelers can arrange a ride whenever they need it. They eliminate the demand for other more costly options such as car rentals or trains, enabling people to travel quickly with minimal effort. Taxis offer reduced fares for regular customers who use the same taxi company on a frequent basis and typically charge by distance or time depending on the route taken.

When selecting a taxi service provider, factors to consider include safety ratings and customer reviews as well as cost comparison between different companies to make sure you get value for money. Many modern taxis also have convenient extras such as GPS tracking and wireless payment terminals. If you don’t have access to public transport or your own car is not available due to unavoidable circumstances, then taxi services will be an ideal choice for your journey needs.

Bangalore to Ooty: Road Trip to Take on Your Next Vacation 2024

Budget Hotels > Travel Blog > Road Trips > Bangalore to Ooty: Road Trip to Take on Your Next Vacation 2024

I have been traveling for as long as I can remember. In my childhood, my parents moved from one city to another as part of their jobs and I tagged along, often feeling inconsolably miserable about the friends I had to leave behind in each of these cities. As I grew older, I started finding the idea of traveling to new places, meeting new people, and of course, tasting new food pretty exciting. And by the time I crossed my teens, I had developed a peculiar kind of homesickness: never-at-home-sickness! It was at the age of 22 that I took my first road trip in my father’s Maruti Omni and I have been exploring places by road ever since, sometimes alone, sometimes with friends, and sometimes with Papad, my beagle, to keep me company.

Speaking of road trips, my latest one was from Bangalore to Ooty, with two of my colleagues. And that’s what this blog is about – our awesome road trip from the City of Gardens to the Queen of Hill Stations!

A Word (or Two) about Ooty, Our Destination

Ooty, also called Udhagamandalam, needs no introduction, especially if you are from the southern part of the country. This beautiful hill station in Tamil Nadu is a place every avid traveler visits at least once their life. This was my second trip to Ooty while my travel companions have been there more times than they can count. Yet, the place has an undeniable charm that keeps people going back, again and again, which has earned Ooty a place in the list of must-visit hill stations near Bangalore.

Ooty has a perfect blend of everything you would expect from a great holiday destination – great climatic conditions, unlimited natural beauty, good resorts and hotels, and of course, lots of places to visit. From the famous Rose Garden and the Nilgiri Mountain Railways to Pykara Lake and Echo Rock, this quaint little town offers many memorable experiences. But what got us excited was the very prospect of traveling by road soaking in all the beautiful vistas en route, listening to the murmur of pine trees and enjoying the sight of never-ending tea estates. Hey, can you hear that sound? That’s us starting our Renault Duster for a 5-day trip to the land of the Blue Mountains!

Choosing A Route from Bangalore to Ooty

Deciding on the route was the most difficult part because there are three different routes one can take from Bangalore to Ooty by car – the Mysore-Masinagudi route, the Kanakapura-Kollegal route, and the Salem-Coonoor Route. Each of these routes has its own advantages, in terms of distance and stopovers. After much discussions and homework, we took the first route, namely the Mysore-Masinagudi route. Here are the details:

Route: Bangalore – Mandya – Mysore – Nanjangudu – Gundlupet – Bandipur – Mudhumalai (Theppakadu) – Masinagudi – Ooty

Distance : 280 km (approx.)

Travel Time: 6 – 7 hours (approx.) without stopovers. You can choose to cover this distance in two days, spending the night at one of the stopovers and that’s what our plan was.

Advantages: We chose this route for our Ooty trip from Bangalore because we were planning to explore some of the stopovers on the way, such as Mysore, Nanjangud, Bandipur National Park, Mudumalai, and Masinagudi. Also, this is the perfect circuit for those who love driving through diverse landscapes, from the traffic-ridden roads in Bangalore and the state-of-the-art national highways to the long stretches of jungle roads and thrilling hairpin bends. As diehard travelers and experienced drivers, we were up for that challenge. The other routes also have some interesting stopovers and advantages, which I will talk about later in this blog.

HITTING THE ROAD: DAY 1

A day before the trip, we went to a supermarket and picked all the essentials (by which we basically mean food). We bought several packets of chips, nuts, biscuits, and bottles of mineral water and soft drinks to fuel ourselves up during the trip. With bags packed, food stocked up, and the car checked and serviced, we were all set and on ‘our marks’, like three runners waiting for the starter pistol to go off.

Starting from Bangalore

We are Bangaloreans and we know our city like the palm of our hand, so we wanted to hit the Bangalore – Mysore Highway before the much-dreaded rush hours begin. Thus we started our trip at 6 in the morning and managed to escape the horrendous traffic. Our first stopover, of course, was Mysore which is at a distance of about 150 km from Bangalore. We were hoping to cover this distance in about 3 hours, give or take a few minutes based on the traffic. If you too, like us, want to avoid the traffic, our two cents would be to start your trip early – by or even before 6 am, if possible. The only disadvantage of starting early is that you will miss out some attractions on the Bangalore – Mysore route, such as Kanva Reservoir, Ramadevara Betta, Heritage Winery, the shops selling wooden toys in Channapatna, and the like. But worry not; you can take another trip exclusively to cover these places.

The Bangalore – Mysore highway has many eateries such as Kamat (Channapatna), Cafe Coffee Day, and McDonald’s. However, our plan was to have our breakfast in Mysore, so we rode on without stopping anywhere except for pee breaks.

Mysore, the City of Palaces

At about 9.30 am we reached Mysore, the city best known for its Dasara celebrations, silk, and sandal soaps. Our stomachs were rumbling, so we were being driven by our primitive instinct to find some food. That wasn’t a tough task at all because there are many restaurants in Mysore that sell lip-smacking breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Our pick was Gayatri Tiffin Room (GTR) located in Chamundipuram. We entered the restaurant, and blimey, the enticing smell of masala dosa, vada , and filter coffee filled our nostrils. So, we quickly grabbed three seats and ordered some tongue-tickling South Indian delights and topped it all with a cup of aromatic coffee.

Now that we fueled up our engines, we were in the mood for some sightseeing. It goes without saying that there are many historical places in Mysore that gives you a glimpse into the city’s storied past, but our itinerary contained only two – the Mysore Palace and the Rail Museum. While the former took us back in history to the times of the great Wadiyars, the latter taught us about the history of locomotives. It took us close to 4 hours to cover both these places, but the experience did make up for it.

By then, it was almost 2 pm. We had a quick lunch at Mahesh Prasad , another iconic restaurant in the city and continued on our trip to our next stopover, which was Nanjangud.

Nanjangud, the Town of Temples and Bananas

Nanjangud (or Nanjangudu as it is officially known) is a small town located about 23 km from the city of Mysore, on the banks of the Kapila River. After taking a small detour, we reached there at around 3.30 pm. This quaint little town is best known as a pilgrim center and the main attraction here is the Srikanteshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. If you didn’t know, Nanjangud is sometimes called Dakshina Kashi or the Kashi of the South. And guess what else the place is famous for? A special variety of banana which is locally called Nanjangud Rasabalehannu ! Being foodies, how can we leave the town without tasting it? So we did, and also bought some more to eat on the way. After spending an hour or so at Nanjangud, we drove off again with our minds set on Ooty but not without taking a third stopover at Bandipur National Park, one of the most sought-after weekend getaways near Bangalore .

Bandipur: Of Crouching Tigers and Hidden Wildlife

We drove on for another hour (about 50 km) and reached Bandipur via Gundlupet by late evening, at around 6 pm. We reached there too late to enjoy the scenic beauty of the park or to spot animals. Moreover, night traffic is banned in Bandipur from 9 pm to 6 am. But we were smart enough to foresee this problem and had it sorted out by booking a room in one of the famous jungle resorts in Bandipur National Park. We checked in at the resort and, oh boy, let me tell you, the experience of staying in wilderness and enjoying nature at its rawest best was enticing and frightening at the same time. The resort was designed based on eco-friendly principles and the food served was simple but delicious. After a whole day of driving and sightseeing, we had a good night’s sleep, woke up refreshed the next morning, had our breakfast, and by 11 am, we were ready to hit the road again.

DAY 2: JUNGLES AND HAIRPIN BENDS

After leaving the resort, we drove on through the national park. The road had several humps which slowed our pace down, but that also gave us a chance to soak in the wild beauty. We could also spot some peacocks, herds of deer, and elephants on the way before reaching Mudumalai.

Passing through Mudumalai

Where the Bandipur National Park ended, we entered into Tamil Nadu and the next thing we knew, we were driving through another national park, namely Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. To put it simply, we drove out of one national park and drove into another, without even realizing it. And wow, that indeed was amusing and pretty confusing at the same time. So we checked online for some information and found that the Tiger Reserve at Mudumalai is divided into different ranges including Masinagudi, Theppakadu, and Mudumalai. After crossing the borders of Karnataka and entering Tamil Nadu, we drove for about 5 km and reached a place called Theppakadu, which is known for its Elephant Camp. From here, we had two options to reach Ooty – one via Masinagudi and the other via Gudalur. The former is apparently the shorter route but has steep hairpin bends – 36 of them- while the latter is a regular public transportation route that Bangalore to Ooty buses would normally take. So, to quote Robert Frost, two roads diverged in the yellow woods and which one did we choose?

Of course, the one with 36 mighty, hair-raising hairpin bends! Didn’t I tell you, we three have a thing for adventure and adrenaline rush?!

Navigating Through the Hairpin Bends

The route to Ooty via Masinagudi is a picturesque one, but has its own advantages and disadvantages. For starters, the route is a little tricky and the steep curves on the road are enough to give shudders to an inexperienced driver. Also, taking into consideration the safety of travelers, the road is closed during the night, so we had to make sure that we covered that stretch before evening. Another disadvantage is that there aren’t many restaurants or eateries on this route, but we were sufficiently covered on the food front. Nuts, biscuits, and Nanjangud bananas, remember?

The greatest advantage of this route is the beautiful vistas it offers. Smoky clouds, lush green valleys, and expansive mountains – for a moment there, we thought we were in another world! Also, Masinagudi is home to a fascinating range of avifauna. So if you are a birdwatcher, this route is just the perfect one for you.

Ooty, At Last!

From Masinagudi, Ooty is about 30 km away via MDR 700 and we took about an hour to reach our final destination. We could see that both these routes –Gudalur as well as Masinagudi – merge at about 6 km before Ooty. We reached the town in the evening and checked in at one of the best budget hotels in Ooty . Though our trip was adventurous, it had left us totally exhausted. We decided to stay put in our room, eat, relax, and gear up for the 2 days of sightseeing ahead of us.

DAY 3 AND DAY 4: UP ABOVE THE BLUE MOUNTAINS

For the next two days, we traveled the breadth and width of Ooty and visited many places. On the first day, we visited some of the popular lakes in Ooty , including Ooty Lake and Pykara Lake. We also covered the Rose Garden and Tribal Museum post lunch. The second day was dedicated to some of the exotic experiences in the town, such as traveling in the Nilgiri Mountain Railways, visiting the Doddabetta Tea Factory, and taking a trip to Dolphin’s Nose. All through these sightseeing expeditions, we didn’t forget to satiate our hunger at some of the best restaurants in Ooty .

Of course, we didn’t explore everything the town had in store for us, but we were cool about it because our objective was not to cover as many places as possible but enjoy the experience itself. If you are traveling to this hill station, you can plan for a 3 day trip. Here’s a blog on the places to visit in Ooty in 3 days to help you out.

DAY 5: THE TRIP BACK

On the fifth day morning after breakfast, we checked out from the hotel and started our return trip. Typically, return journeys are the saddest and least exciting ones. But when your focus is on the road and the adventures it offers, even return trips are as stimulating as the onward ones. On the way, we stopped to buy some Ooty chocolates, tea powder, and other souvenirs. While returning, we took the Gudalur route instead of navigating through the hairpin bends. We reached Bangalore in about 8 hours and my, oh, my, what a trip it had been!

Other Routes from Bangalore to Ooty

Besides the one we have taken, there are two more routes to reach Ooty from Bangalore. Some of the most popular waterfalls near Bangalore , such as Chunchi Falls and Hogenakkal Falls, are located on these routes.

Ooty Road Trip from Bangalore

Bandupur sunrise

Ooty road trip from Bangalore is one of the most sought after road trips from Bangalore . Situated at a distance of almost 300 Kms from Bangalore, the road trip to Ooty offers some of the most scenic places to see en route such as Nice ring road, Mysore newly constructed ring road, driving through Bandipur national park and a total of 36 hairpin bends to Ooty before finally reaching there.

Page Contents

Bangalore to Ooty road trip:

If you want to leave for Ooty from Bangalore, I would suggest you take NICE ring road from Bangalore if you are starting from areas like Marathalli, BTM, Electronics city etc. The drive on NICE road will set your mood right before you hit the Mysore road. I would also suggest you to start around 10’o clock in the night so that you can see the sunrise in the Western Ghats hills of Ooty or nearby.

Starting at 10 or later in the night from Bangalore to Ooty will help you avoid Bangalore traffic, especially on Weekends. buy stromectol Canada buy stromectol no prescription no prescription  The traffic on the Mysore road will be little rough but there will be a lot Dhabas and some even open a well as Tea-stalls where you can take a break.

From Mysore towards Ooty via Mysore ring road:

Try to avoid driving through the Mysore city en route Ooty even though it will be night because that will add surplus time to your journey. There is another outer ring road on the peripherals of Mysore just like NICE road. You can take that outer ring road to avoid driving through Mysore city and directly reaching Bandipur road.

Google maps sometimes do not show this newly constructed outer ring road. So just for your reference. I am highlighting the Mysore ring road in the below media so you do not have to cross the Mysore road.

Mysore ring road

Also, know that the Bandipur road from Mysore is getting extended into a four-lane road that means there will be a lot of traffic while returning because of the construction working going on along the roadside.

Entry to Bandipur national park:

Entry to Bandipur national park is free but it opens at 6 AM in the morning. That means you cannot enter the reserve forest before that. So, most probably you will see the sunrise while driving through the Bandipur national park only. Try to take a break in the Bandipur national park for tea and enjoy the nature there.

Bandupur sunrise

Bandipur to Ooty:

There are two routes to Ooty from Bandipur. The first route is via Theppakadu and the second one is via Gudalur. I would suggest you to take the first route to Ooty via Theppakadu because it has 36 number of hairpin bends and also the road is newly constructed and driving is fun on this road.

Once you reach Ooty on your vehicle the first things we look for are the bathrooms and parking. So for parking and Bathroom in the Ooty, drive directly to the rose garden and there is a parking there. If you are in doubt, ask someone and they should tell you.

Just in front of the main entrance of the Rose Garden, there are public toilets. You can get fresh there.

Places to see in Ooty:

Rose garden:.

Rose Garden is a kind of big park but usually crowded on weekends. After a long drive, we usually go and relax under the warm sun on the velvety grass of the rose garden. buy synthroid Canada buy synthroid no prescription no prescription You can even take a nap lying under the sun.

Ooty lake is another place to chill out. There you can opt for boating and relax while boating slowly.

Tibet Market:

If you want to buy something for someone, you can also take a walk around the Tibet market in Ooty. The Tibet market is just in front of the Rose garden. I bought there two shawls for a much cheaper price. If you want to buy other things from Ooty then buy homemade chocolates which you will see on the every other counter of the shops. You can also buy honey, plant saplings etc.

Returning from Ooty to Bangalore:

If you do not have a plan to return to Bangalore the same day, then it’s okay. In case, you have the plan to drive back to Bangalore the same day then keep in mind that entry to Bandipur national park closes at around 8.30 PM so keep that in mind if you are leaving too late from Ooty.

That’s it from my side. If you are interested in some more road trips especially the romantic road trips from Bangalore , here is the link for romantic road trips from Bangalore.

Bangalore to Ooty by Road

Let's explore the driving directions for your journey to Ooty by car or bike.

The hairpin bend route to Ooty via Masinagudi

The hairpin bend route to Ooty via Masinagudi

The more popular route is via Mysore (outlined below): Bangalore → Mysore → Gundlupet → Bandipur → Theppakadu junction → via Masinagudi (option 1) or via Gudalur (option 2) → Thalaikundha junction → Ooty.

This route takes about 7 hours & 300km drive.

Most travellers prefer the Bangalore-Mysore Expressway first. And then head towards Gundlupet after Mysore.

Once past Gundlupet, the road passes through the Bandipur National Park, which straddles the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border. Bandipur National Park lies on the Karnataka side, while the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary is on the Tamil Nadu side, both integral parts of the Nilgiri Biosphere.

Approximately 20 km from Gundlupet, you'll reach the Bandipur National Park entry point, where forest safaris are operated, offering a chance to spot wildlife.

After Bandipur, you'll cross into Tamil Nadu, marked by arches on either side of a riverlet. Check posts at the border may inspect your vehicle and travel details, especially on the Tamil Nadu side.

Upon reaching Theppakadu, two routes to Ooty emerge one via Masinagudi, a shorter but challenging route with steep climbs and hairpin bends, and the other via Gudalur, the standard bus route.

The Masinagudi route is closed at night for safety, so plan accordingly. It's advisable for experienced drivers due to its challenging terrain. Masinagudi is known for trekking and offers resorts and homestays.

Both routes merge approximately 6 kilometres before Ooty. Keep in mind that traffic through the national park is restricted at night, and Masinagudi traffic is allowed only towards Ooty.

If road travel isn't your preference, consider the train option. You can travel from Bangalore to Ooty by train, with Coimbatore being the nearest major railway station. There are bus services from both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka state corporations between Coimbatore and Bangalore. Additionally, bus travel from Bangalore to Ooty is a popular option.

For those preferring air travel, Coimbatore has an airport located 15 km outside the city, with a few direct flights from Bangalore.

road trip bangalore to ooty

Bangalore to Ooty Adventure.

It was a Friday night, and the usual pub scene just wasn’t cutting it for us. We were bored of the same old routine and craved an adventure. Every Friday we used to do the same. Hit the bar, drink some good liquor, try different cuisines, and come back home. We wanted to do something different this time. That’s when the idea struck – let’s go on a long drive tonight.

Our trip to Ooty

We hopped on the Zoom car app, ready to find our escape wheels. Here’s the catch: most cars were booked solid as it was the weekend. The only option left was a 48-hour rental. Now, we weren’t planning a grand expedition, but hey, desperate times call for desperate measures! We figured, “What the heck?” and booked it anyway. They charged a pretty hefty amount including the weekend surcharge but we were too desperate to pay it without any hiccups. It was 1 AM, and our impromptu weekend-long drive was officially underway.

We hit the road, the open highway stretching endlessly before us. We thought of driving towards Rasta Cafe – a traveler’s night out place in Bangalore but we have been there before so started looking for new options for a long drive. As the miles flew by, we realized we had come too far from Bangalore city and thought why couldn’t we utilize this opportunity and explore a new place?

A new destination popped into our heads – Ooty, the Queen of Hills! With a 48-hour car at our disposal, why not? Little did we know, this decision would lead to an unforgettable adventure.

Since none of my friends knew how to drive, the responsibility fell on me. After an overnight long drive, we reached the Ooty border around 6 AM. Craving some caffeine and energy for the day ahead, we stopped at a Cafe Coffee Day for a much-needed breakfast.

road trip bangalore to ooty

Belly full and spirits high, we continued our journey. We entered Bandipur National Park, driving slowly with the hope of spotting some wildlife. Unfortunately, our luck wasn’t with us that day – all we saw were some deer and monkeys. Still, the excitement of the potential encounter kept our adrenaline pumping. There is a routine checkup you have to pass through at the Bandipur National Park crossing where they check for liquor, hookahs, or drugs and ensure you enter the state clean.

road trip bangalore to ooty

Finally, at around 8 AM, the rolling hills of Ooty greeted us. The view was breathtaking, and the excitement in the car was off the charts. We rolled down the windows, blasting music, and soaking in the fresh mountain air. Everywhere we looked – a photo opportunity! We stopped often, capturing memories of our spontaneous adventure.

road trip bangalore to ooty

Now, here’s the thing: we were so caught up in the excitement of planning this last-minute trip that booking a hotel completely slipped our minds. No worries though! We parked the car, found a nearby dhaba, freshened up, and then hit the streets of Ooty, ready to explore.

The day was a whirlwind of activity. We strolled through the charming town, indulging in delicious local treats. We bought boxes of chocolates, a must-have from Ooty, and marveled at the sprawling tea farms and the fascinating process of making jaggery. We even ventured out to Coonoor to witness the stunning Dolphin’s Nose viewpoint.

road trip bangalore to ooty

By the time evening rolled around, we were exhausted but exhilarated. It had been a non-stop day, and I, the designated driver, had been at the wheel for most of it. Surprisingly, I didn’t feel an ounce of fatigue. The adrenaline and excitement of the trip kept me going.

With heavy eyelids and satisfied smiles, we piled back into the car and began the journey back to Bangalore. The drive was smooth sailing – my friends snoozed peacefully as I navigated the familiar roads. Within 6 hours, we were back home, successfully completing our epic 24-hour Ooty adventure.

We still had a day left on our car rental, but honestly, we were spent. The next day was dedicated to pure relaxation, reliving the memories of our crazy road trip.

This trip to Ooty was a testament to the power of spontaneity. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures are the ones that aren’t planned, the ones that take you on unexpected journeys and create memories that will last a lifetime.
