ChatGPT can live on a Mac

OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November, built on the company's GPT-3 machine learning models. Companies such as Microsoft have integrated it while others — including Google — fear it .

It has various applications to answer questions and generate text, and a new app has appeared that brings it to the Mac menu bar.

Created by Jordi Bruin, MacGPT is a macOS app available for free, though people can add their own price to help support the developer.

Once a user logs in with their OpenAI credentials, they can click the menu bar icon to start a conversation. It's also possible to assign it a keyboard shortcut to activate MacGPT without needing a mouse or trackpad.

How to use ChatGPT on Mac with MacGPT

MacGPT is available to run on macOS versions of Monterey and Ventura.

  • Visit Bruin's webpage on Gumroad .
  • Enter 0 in the price box to download it for free — but we recommend throwing Bruin a few bucks.
  • Click " I want this! " and the 3.1MB download will start immediately.
  • Double-click on the zip file in your Downloads folder, then drag the app to the Applications folder .

A Web tab inside the app allows you to log in with OpenAI credentials. Visit the OpenAI website to sign up for a free account. Under the Native tab, accessing ChatGPT via API credentials found in your OpenAI account user settings is possible.

How to use ChatGPT on Mac - Examples of questions and prompts

The MacGPT app notes that this provides faster responses and a more fluid experience. After logging in, the app shows prompts straight from OpenAI.

These prompts remind users that it's currently a research preview and that some of the information generated might be incorrect, misleading, offensive, or biased.

ChatGPT offers various example prompts with which to get started. For example, type "Explain quantum computing in simple terms" or "Got any creative ideas for a 10-year-old's birthday?"

Once a question or statement is answered, ChatGPT will generate a response. Depending on the query, some results can be longer than others. If it's taking a while, there is a button to stop it from running.

It wasn't that simple

At the bottom of the answer are buttons to like or dislike a response. OpenAI added that option as a way for people to give feedback on ChatGPT's reponses in case it "hallucinates," which means it can provide an answer that is false or not supported by its training data.

Additionally, MacGPT and the ChatGPT website save conversations in a history so users can revisit them. It's also possible to access ChatGPT via OpenAI's website , and it's functionally identical to MacGPT without unique features.

MacGPT: how to use ChatGPT on your Mac

Fionna Agomuoh

Apple might not officially be in the AI space, but a developer has created a legitimate way to bring ChatGPT to macOS and make the chatbot accessible from your menu bar.

How to download MacGPT

How to sign in or register for macgpt, what to expect when using macgpt for the first time, macgpt special features.

The aptly named MacGPT is an application developed by Jordi Bruin that allows you to install ChatGPT as a remote browser on your Mac desktop. The application has been available since the 2022 holiday season and has garnered over 370 ratings, many of which are five stars. MacGPT is currently free, however, Bruin accepts donations. Once out of beta, he will make MacGPT available at the App Store, where it will sell for $5.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re interested in trying out MacGPT.

You can access the MacGPT download on Bruin’s Gumroad page . If you’d like to leave a donation, you can input your fair price. Select I want this and it will take you to the download page. Enter your email address and then select G et to begin the download. You will receive a receipt in your email detailing that you purchased the product, regardless of if you donated or not. The app is compatible with macOS Monterey and macOS Ventura.

  • GPT-4 vs. GPT-3.5: how much difference is there?
  • OpenAI needs just 15 seconds of audio for its AI to clone a voice
  • How much does an AI supercomputer cost? Try $100 billion

Keep in mind that MacGPT is just ChatGPT in a Mac ecosystem. When opening the app, it closely resembles Apple’s Safari browser, but everything looks and feels very much like ChatGPT. The browser will open a ChatGPT welcome window giving you the option to either log in or sign up for ChatGPT.

If you already have an OpenAI account, or you subscribe to ChatGPT Plus , you can use your credentials to quickly access ChatGPT. If you use a Google or Microsoft account as your login, you can also use that to finish setup. Note that if you have two-factor authentication enabled on one of these sign-in methods, you’ll need to authenticate with a security token or app. If you don’t have an account, you can quickly register through the app on-screen.

Once logged in, you will have an experience similar to logging into ChatGPT on a standard browser. There are notifications detailing that ChatGPT is a free research preview and that some of the information generated might be incorrect, misleading, offensive, or biased.

There is a notification about how ChatGPT collects data and one encouraging feedback. When you get to the chatbot, it is identical to the online generator, which showcases examples, capabilities, and limitations. If you already have an account, you should be able to see your history of prior queries in the upper-left. Inputting a new prompt will generate your desired response and update your history, which you’ll then be able to see if you log into the original ChatGPT on a separate browser.

MacGPT does have some features that are unique to the application. You can set a keyboard shortcut for the app so that it opens without the use of a mouse. You can access this feature through the MacGPT preferences, which are located in the upper-right corner of the screen.

You can also select the A lways on top option to have the MacGPT icon show up on the Mac screen header as a drop-down application.

Overall, though, MacGPT is basically a shortcut for the browser-based version of ChatGPT. It has the advantage of showing an icon on your desktop, but there were a few oddities I noticed when using the app:

  • You can purchase ChatGPT Plus through MacGPT since everything is identical to the web-based chatbot. At first, I got an error message when attempting to access the link. This could indicate that MacGPT suffers from the same throttling issues as the free ChatGPT. However, attempting again a few minutes later took me to the checkout page.
  • If you already have ChatGPT Plus, you can input your confirmation code into the Plus section located in the top-right corner of the browser.
  • MacGPT features a Dark mode similar to the web-based ChatGPT.
  • The only thing that appears nonfunctional on the MacGPT interface is the Updates & FAQ link.
  • When opening MacGPT, you might occasionally get a CAPTCHA notification asking you to confirm that you’re human.

Other than that, MacGPT is a simple way to access ChatGPT without going through your browser and not much more. Thankfully, there are some other interesting ways OpenAI’s tech is being implemented on other platforms. For example, Snapchat recently announced its My AI tool inside the app, and Slack integrated a ChatGPT bot into its application as well.

ChatGPT isn’t the only AI chatbot in town. One direct competitor is Microsoft’s Copilot (formerly Bing Chat), and if you’ve never used it before, you should definitely give it a try. As part of a greater suite of Microsoft tools, Copilot can be integrated into your smartphone, tablet, and desktop experience, thanks to a Copilot sidebar in Microsoft Edge.

Like any good AI chatbot, Copilot’s abilities are constantly evolving, so you can always expect something new from this generative learning professional. Today though, we’re giving a crash course on where to find Copilot, how to download it, and how you can use the amazing bot.  How to get Microsoft Copilot Microsoft Copilot comes to Bing and Edge. Google's Gemini AI chatbot has quickly become one of the major players in the generative AI space. Despite its rocky start, Gemini is one of the only true competitors to ChatGPT. Here's everything you need to know about it. What is Google Gemini? Google first introduced its AI endeavor as Bard in March 2023 in a free and experimental capacity. The chatbot was originally run on the LaMDA large language model (LLM).

In August 2023, it introduced Google Duet as an enterprise option featuring AI-inundated Workspace apps, including Gmail, Drive, Slides, Docs, and others.

The new MacBook Air with M3 chip not only allows you to use it with two external displays, but it has also reportedly addressed a storage problem that plagued the previous M2 model. The laptop now finally has much faster storage performance since Apple has switched back to using two 128GB NAND modules instead of a single 256GB module on the SSD drive.

This was discovered by the YouTuber Max Tech, who tore down the entry-level model of the MacBook Air M3 with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. In his tests, thanks to the two NAND modules, the M3 MacBook Air is nearly double faster than the M2 MacBook Air. Blackmagic Disk Speed tests show that the older M2 model with the problematic NAND chip had a 1584.3 Mb/s write speed, and the newer M3 model had 2108.9 Mb/s for the M3 model, for a 33% difference. In read speeds, it was 1576.4 Mb/s on the old model and 2880.2 Mb/s on the newer model.

How to Access ChatGPT From Your Mac's Menu Bar

OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot offers a new generation of conversational AI functionality that promises to fundamentally change the technological landscape and the way people work. Here's how to access it directly from your Mac's menu bar.

ChatGPT on App Store Feature

ChatGPT is trained on a large corpus of text corralled from the internet, which allows it to answer a wide variety of questions and generate coherent responses to many different types of prompts.

That's why Microsoft has added its Bing GPT chatbot to the Taskbar with the latest Windows 11 update, and why Google plans to integrate its Bard experimental conversational AI service to Google Search.

Sadly, Apple doesn't have a chatbot service similar to ChatGPT, and there's no indication that the company will launch one soon, so macOS integration is likely some ways off. However, thanks to one developer, it is possible to interact with ChatGPT right from your Mac's menu bar.

macgpt

In the app's settings, there's an option to make the MacGPT window always on top, so it floats over other windows. You can also record a keyboard shortcut that launches the chat window.

8 Ways To Get ChatGPT On A Mac

ChatGPT has set the internet on fire with its incredible Artificial Intelligence and here we show you some different ways to use ChatGPT on a Mac.

ChatGPT is a deep learning AI chatbot that can generate text on just about anything incredibly accurately.

The possibilities are endless with ChatGPT and there’s no doubt that it is a next level technology that goes beyond anything that Siri, Alexa or other “virtual assistants” are capable of.

However, there’s no official ChatGPT application on any platform yet, so here we look at ways you can use ChatGPT on a Mac for free and integrate it more closely with macOS including the latest Apple Silicon Macs.

All of these ways of installing ChatGPT on a Mac also work on the latest versions of macOS including Sonoma .

Quick Navigation

Is ChatGPT Free To Use?

Does chatgpt work on mac, 2. create a chatgpt dock shortcut in safari, 3. chatgpt for desktop, 4. chatgpt web, 6. configure a shortcut, 7. integrate chatgpt with python.

At the moment, ChatGPT is free to use on all platforms but the developer OpenAI has now introduced a ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month.

ChatGPT Plus offers faster response times, better access during peak times and first access to new features.

ChatGPT works on any platform including Macs as it’s entirely web based but there are also ways to integrate it into macOS.

Windows users can save ChatGPT as a Windows app using the Edge browser but this isn’t possible on a Mac unless you have already installed Windows on your Mac .

Microsoft has also recently released Bing, Edge and Skype AI apps for iPhone and iPad which is based on BingAI but nothing for Mac.

Apple doesn’t have a chatbot like ChatGPT either and there is no official ChatGPT app for Mac to download but here are the best ways to access ChatGPT on a Mac.

 macgpt application

You can access ChatGPT from your Mac’s Menu Bar thanks to a free third party app called macGPT .

macGPT allows you to start new conversations on your Mac desktop and also resume ones that you have already started. You can also access macGPT from the Main Menu via the brain icon even when apps are in full screen mode.

To use ChatGPT with macGPT follow these instructions.

  • Sign-up for an OpenAI ChatGPT account . You’ll need to enter your name, email address and telephone number to verify your account.
  • Download menuGPT and drag it to your Applications folder.
  • Double click on it and login with your OpenAI credentials.

You can then use ChatGPT via macGPT from your Mac’s Menu bar. You can also change the settings so that macGPT is always on top floating over other windows.

menugpt chat settings

You can download macGPT for free although the developer encourages a small donation.

If you find that macGPT is not working when you enter a request, then it’s probably because ChatGPT is at capacity.

Note that this is not a problem with macGPT but is due to high demand on ChatGPT.

safari web apps chatgpt

If you’ve already updated your Mac to macOS Sonoma , then you can easily create a desktop Dock shortcut to access ChatGPT on your Mac anytime.

This has been possible on iOS devices like iPhones and iPads for some time but is also now possible in the latest version of Safari in macOS Sonoma.

In fact, you can do this for any website you use in Safari.

To create a ChatGPT app shortcut in the Dock using Safari in macOS Sonoma, follow these instructions.

  • Visit ChatGPT in Safari. You don’t have to log into your account or anything to create the Dock app for it.
  • Go to File in the top right of Safari.
  • Click on the Add To Dock option.
  • Click on Add .

You’ve then instantly created a ChatGPT app for Mac that sits in your Dock like any other application.

The latest version of Safari also has a “web app” view mode which is like a simplified version of the browser which may be better for using ChatGPT when you click on the app in the Dock.

chatgpt for mac desktop

ChatGPT For Desktop is similar to macGPT and allows you to access ChatGPT from your Mac’s Menu Bar.

Once installed, you can either click on the ChatGPT For Desktop logo in the Menu Bar or use CMD + Shift + G to quickly open it from anywhere.

Note that there are two different downloads for ChatGPT For Desktop: one for Intel Macs and one for Apple Silicon ARM M1, M2 and M3 Macs.

You can download ChatGPT For Desktop here and watch how to install it below.

The quickest and easiest way to use ChatGPT on a Mac is simply to use the ChatGPT website in any browser such as Safari, Firefox or Chrome.

Once you’ve signed-up, you can ask ChatGPT anything and wait for a response.

If you sign-up with a Google or Microsoft account you only need to provide your email address to verify your account.

If you just sign-up with an email address, you’ll also need to provide your mobile number to verify your account.

You can then bookmark ChatGPT in your browser for easy access anytime you need it.

You can sign-up for ChatGPT here .

chatgpt in mac browser

HelloAI is an AI Chatbot Assistant that allows you to use ChatGPT on your Mac desktop.

HelloAI requires you to have a ChatGPT account and helps you get answers to quick questions instantly via ChatGPT on your Mac desktop.

HelloAI sits in the top right corner of your screen and also includes a useful Prompt Library that saves your favorite and frequently used prompts.

There’s also a Prompt Store which provides hundreds of prompts for various topics ranging from business and education to travel and entertainment.

This could be useful for Marketing Professionals looking for brainstorming inspiration, Business Executives needing to communicate clearly with a team and generate meeting agendas and students that need to simplify research.

However, HelloAI also requires a $2.99 weekly or $9.99 monthly plan on top of your ChatGPT subscription if you have one.

You download HelloAI from the Mac App store.

You can also integrate ChatGPT in other apps such as Gmail, Microsoft Office and more by creating a Shortcut although this is the most complicated way of setting-up ChatGPT on a Mac.

Creating a shortcut on your Mac basically allows you to access ChatGPT from any application although it won’t work in all cases.

To setup a shortcut to use ChatGPT you need to:

  • Sign-up for an OpenAI account .
  • Get an OpenAI API key which allows ChatGPT to communicate with Siri.
  • Click on “Create Secret New Key” and keep the API key safe somewhere.

You then need to create a Shortcut on your Mac instructions for which you can find below.

If you’re a programmer using Python, you can also integrate ChatGPT with Python on a Mac.

Python can access ChatGPT via the OpenAI API client similar to the other methods of integrating ChatGPT that we’ve already looked at.

Of course, it’s only useful for programmers although you may find that other coding platforms can also access the OpenAI API client on a Mac too.

To use ChatGPT With Python, follow the instructions below.

chattab mac

If you want a convenient way to use ChatGPT on your Mac then try ChatTab.

ChatTab downloads onto your Mac desktop and works in a tab layout format a bit like using a browser. You’ll of course need an OpenAI account and OpenAI key to link ChatTab to ChatGPT.

You can display a floating windows above any app and it’s ideal for Markdown with headings, codes, ordered lists etc.

ChatTab also does not store any of your private information, chats or log your activity either.

You can even use ChatTab for free but you will be limited to one single tab.

You can download ChatTab for Mac free and try it for yourself.

BlessU for walking me through the phenomenal mysteries of ChatGPT for MacBook Pro users! I’ve been dying to learn but my righteous MacBookPro M1 Max has been a problemo with YouTube videos.¯\(°_o)/¯ Adventure outside and take sweet care of yourself…(>‿◠)✌

Apple is bringing AI Chat to more places in your MacBook

MacGPT is becoming more accessible

A man in a suit using a laptop with a projected display showing a mockup of the ChatGPT interface.

Apple ’s MacGPT app, a native app for macOS that brings quick access to ChatGPT from the menu bar, has been updated to version 3.0. The new update adds on plenty of new features, as well as making it more accessible for users.

For instance, a new feature called Global lets you access MacGPT’s assistance from anywhere by using a text field that appears in the middle of the screen. Another feature is Inline, which brings ChatGPT AI into the text field by typing in a trigger phrase and prompt.

And because MacGPT loads the chat interface directly into the web browser, you’re able to log into OpenAI and then begin a conversation with the app by clicking the menu icon or you can assign a keyboard shortcut instead.

And not only will MacGPT feature its own updates, but ChatGPT-4 integration also brings with it plenty of other improvements like using images to search, being a virtual assistant for the visually impaired , and boosting your conversational skills in Duolingo .

ChatGPT has plenty of potential for good

Despite many of the moral issues that ChatGPT brings with it, there are so many accessibility uses that can make life easier for people, as well as for general quality-of-life uses. As mentioned before, the visually impaired or blind can use an app called Be My Eyes , which lets GPT-4 pick out images and sounds to pull relevant information from.

It also possesses response capabilities across 26 languages, including Korean and Italian. And if asked, it can summarize novels and films by using a database trained on millions of books, webpages, and plenty of text data. Because its memory bank can now hold 64,000 words, it can also remember about 128 pages of conversational text  – handy if you need it to recall information from a previous conversation.

Then there’s the fun side to ChatGPT, which comes from making it do quirky and harmless stunts. For instance, you can use it to code a videogame but the AI is wonky and often truncates the coding thanks to the character count limit. It can also write a movie script very poorly , or you can make it talk to itself and watch as it descends into madness thanks to the closed loop of conversation swapping information that wasn’t very accurate to begin with.

There are so many uses for ChatGPT, especially the updated GPT-4 version that brings so many improvements to the AI chat application. Of course, the legal, moral, and physically dangerous ramifications of said AI technology need to be properly culled before we can truly use it as the force of good it was meant to be.

Make ChatGPT Work for You With These Browser Extensions

3D illustration of colorful shapes a mouse cursor and a browser window

It's hard to escape ChatGPT right now, with the conversational artificial intelligence bot taking on everything from web search to essay writing . More than 100 million people have tried out ChatGPT since it launched.

Whether you're using ChatGPT for free or paying for ChatGPT Plus ($20 a month), the impressiveness of its text-generating capabilities aren't really matched by its interface, which sticks largely to the basics.

That's where third-party browser extensions come in: They can help you get easier access to ChatGPT from other websites, add missing features such as a chat exporter, and suggest better prompts for getting better answers out of the AI bot.

These extensions are all compatible with the latest versions of Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, except where stated.

Merlin sits in your browser and puts ChatGPT right at your fingertips, ready to spring into action at a moment's notice: Whether you need to compose a reply to a social media post or summarize a long block of text, Merlin can help you out.

The Ctrl+M (Windows) or Cmd+M (macOS) keyboard shortcut is how Merlin is activated once you've selected a block of text. You then need to tell Merlin what you want it to get ChatGPT to do: summarize, reply, write, or whatever it is.

For example, you can highlight all the text in an email and get Merlin/ChatGPT to compose a response. Having the chatbot right inside your browser makes it really convenient to use, though you are limited to 31 requests per day.

You don't have to wait for Google's own version of ChatGPT to arrive, because ChatGPT for Google shows results from the chatbot alongside the standard results from Google whenever you run a search.

Clearly this is going to work better for some queries than others: ChatGPT can't tell you the latest sports scores, but it can explain what DNA is. Make sure that you're currently signed into your ChatGPT account in your browser to get the responses to load.

The ChatGPT box is neatly integrated alongside the standard Google search results, and you can launch a separate ChatGPT conversation right from it. You can also have the add-on run manually rather than automatically, if you don't want it on every search.

Get ChatGPT right next to your Google results with ChatGPT for Google.

Enhanced ChatGPT does exactly what its name suggests: It adds some handy new features to the basic ChatGPT interface, including an option to export your chats in Markdown format and a selection of tools to help you with your prompts.

Some of those prompt tools include triggers for finding images on the web, getting travel advice, generating translations, and programming in JavaScript. They'll pop up immediately once you've installed the extension.

Look for the new Export Chat option down in the lower left corner when you've set up the add-on. You don't get anything in the way of export options, but it can be helpful to have a copy of your chats to refer to.

If you're planning to do any writing using ChatGPT on the web, from emails to social media posts, then WritingMate can help. You can launch it via a Ctrl+M (Windows) or Cmd+M (macOS) keyboard shortcut, or use the floating icon that appears on the right of the browser window.

You're able to use ChatGPT in any way you like, right in the webpages you're looking at, and there are some helpful prompts included with the extension too. ChatGPT responses can be swiftly tweaked and refined as well.

If you need more than 10 messages per day or longer messages, you can sign up for a $15-per-month premium account. The access you get to the tool for free should tell you whether or not you're going to find it useful.

There's no doubt that ChatGPT is an incredible bit of technology, but it also has its limitations: It doesn't have access to the most up-to-date information, and can't search the web as such.

WebChatGPT (for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox) fixes that, dropping in traditional web search results alongside AI responses in the ChatGPT interface. It also tries to integrate both types of responses to give you something coherent and useful.

This approach works better for some queries than others: Try prompts such as "Who is the President?" and "give me the latest Wired headlines" to see the difference that the extension makes to ChatGPT.

Use WebChatGPT to bring the latest web search results into ChatGPT.

For some of us, it's much easier to talk than to type, and Promptheus enables you to talk to ChatGPT just as you would with a real person. It may give you a whole new perspective on interacting with AI.

You use Promptheus from inside the ChatGPT interface, and you simply press and hold the space bar when you're ready to talk. There are a few extension settings you can play around with too, such as the option to send prompts automatically once you stop talking.

As an added bonus, the extension also gives you easy access to ChatGPT from any webpage—just click on the add-on icon in your browser toolbar to start interacting with the AI bot.

One of the most important features that ChatGPT is missing is the ability to get content out of the ChatGPT interface into other places—you're pretty much limited to the good old copy-paste method.

ChatGPT Export and Share (which works in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox) is here to solve the problem. It takes a little bit more time in terms of setting it up in your browser, but full instructions are provided, and the end results are worth it.

Once the extension is installed, you'll see new export buttons down below the prompt box. You can save your chats as images and PDFs, and there's also the option to create shareable links to them.

How to use ChatGPT in your browser with the right extensions

lance-31.png

Beyond using OpenAI's ChatGPT at its website or through an app , you can access it directly from your browser via an extension. Such extensions as ChatGPT for Chrome, ChatGPT everywhere, Merlin, Monica, WebChatGPT, AI Anywhere for ChatGPT, and Talk-to-ChatGPT integrate with OpenAI's chatbot so that you can more quickly and easily submit your requests and prompts.

Also: ChatGPT fraud is on the rise: Here's what to watch out for

As these extensions communicate with ChatGPT, you'll typically need an account with OpenAI. If you don't yet have one, head to the ChatGPT sign in/sign up page and click the Sign up button. The options accessible with each extension may also vary based on whether you have a free or paid ChatGPT account. Now let's check out a few extensions.

ChatGPT for Chrome

Available for Chrome and Edge through the Chrome Web Store , ChatGPT for Chrome provides a convenient window through which you can chat.

Also:   The best AI chatbots to try

After installing and clicking the extension, you'll be asked to sign into your OpenAI account. Type your request at the prompt, and the AI bot will respond. Continue to pose more questions or tap the plus icon to start a new chat. To access your history, tap the hamburger icon in the upper left. From here, you can rename a chat or remove it completely.

ChatGPT everywhere

Designed for Firefox , ChatGPT everywhere provides access to ChatGPT via a left sidebar in the browser. Select the extension's icon, click the link for OpenAI ChatGPT, and then log into your ChatGPT account. Type your request at the prompt. After the response appears, type additional requests or click the plus icon to start over with a new chat.

Also:   How to use ChatGPT to build your resume

Click the dropdown menu for Chat everywhere and you can switch the content in the sidebar to your bookmarks, history, or synced tabs, and move the sidebar to the right. Wait, there's more. Available from the extension's icon, an entry for Prompts takes you to different webpages with suggestions for prompts. Plus, the developer is working on access to Bing Chat and Google Bard.

Merlin ChatGPT Assistant

Supported in Chrome and Edge through the Chrome Web Store , Merlin ChatGPT Assistant comes in a free edition that limits you to 51 queries per day. If you want more, upgrading to Merlin Pro will cost you $19 a month to start and then ramp up from there depending on your needs.

Also:   I asked ChatGPT, Bing, and Bard what worries them. Google's AI went Terminator on me

After installing and accessing the extension, you're asked to create a free account to use it. To activate Merlin, just press Ctrl+M in Windows. A sidebar opens on the right for you to enter your query. Type your prompt at the bottom of the sidebar and fire away. After Merlin displays the response, you can ask it to expand on its answer or start a new chat. A History list displays your past prompts, while a Settings page lets you change the language, user interface, and other options.

Designed for Chrome and Edge , Monica is another ChatGPT extension with both free and paid versions . The freebie limits you to 30 queries per day. A starter plan priced at $9 per month grants you 2,500 queries for the month, a boost plan costing $19 a month ups that to 8,000 each month, and an elite plan with a price tag of $39 a month doles out an unlimited number of queries.

Also:   How to use the new Bing (and how it's different from ChatGPT)

As with Merlin, you trigger Monica by pressing Ctrl+M on your keyboard. The interface pops up as a sidebar on the left. Monica lets you choose from two types of queries. A chat mode allows you to post a series of questions, while a compose mode lets you ask Monica to write something for you. With compose mode, you can control the type of response by selecting a length, format, tone, and language. Choose the mode you wish to use and then type or speak your query.

Monica displays the response. You can rate the answer by giving it a thumbs up or thumbs down, edit the text to fine-tune it, and share or copy the response. Monica also points you to a history of your chats, so you can refer back to any previous conversations. Plus, a Settings page lets you modify the shortcut, sidebar, and other elements.

Supported in Chrome , Firefox , and Edge through the Chrome Web Store , WebChatGPT takes you to the ChatGPT website but offers a spin by including search results from the web in the response. Type your question or request at the prompt. Depending on the information you seek, the response will display links to three different sites by default and then provide further details in its answer. This can be helpful if you'd like to track down the source of the info provided by ChatGPT.

Also:   How to make ChatGPT provide sources and citations

At the prompt, type a slash if you want to limit the results to a specific website or page. From the bottom toolbar, you can turn web access on or off and change the number of web-based results. You're also able to modify the time to include results from the past day, month, or year. And you can limit results to a specific country or region.

AI Anywhere for ChatGPT

Designed for Chrome , Firefox , and Edge through the Chrome Web Store , AI Anywhere for ChatGPT offers a window in which you type your requests and see the responses. But even cooler, the extension works in a context sensitive way. This means that with AI Anywhere active, you can select and right-click text on any webpage. An AI Anywhere menu item then pops up with options to use ChatGPT to explain, translate, or summarize the selected text. You can even add your own custom context-sensitive commands.

Also:   How to use Midjourney to generate amazing images

To use AI Anywhere for ChatGPT, click the icon for the extension and type your request at the prompt. Alternatively, select any text on the screen that you'd like to have explained or translated by ChatGPT and then submit the prompt. After the response appears, continue the chat or start a new one.

Talk-to-ChatGPT

Designed for Chrome and Edge , Talk-to-ChatGPT lets you submit your request by speaking instead of typing. After installing this one, sign into the ChatGPT home page. With the extension active, a small window appears at the top right of the screen. Click the window's Start button, give your microphone access, and then speak your request. The response from ChatGPT is then spoken using text to speech.

Also:   How to write better ChatGPT prompts

From the small window, you can turn the voice dictation and text to speech on or off as well as skip the response being read by the extension. Another button takes you to the settings screen where you're able to change the language, the AI voice, the speed and pitch, and other options.

How-To Geek

How to enable chatgpt's web browsing and plugins.

ChatGPT's web browsing and plugins features are now available to a wider audience.

Quick Links

How to enable web browsing and plugins in chatgpt, how to install chatgpt plugins, how to use web browsing in chatgpt, how to use plugins in chatgpt, when should you use chatgpt web browsing, when should you use chatgpt plugins, key takeaways.

To activate Web Browsing and Plugins in ChatGPT, head to Settings > Beta Features and enable these features. You will need ChatGPT Plus to do so. Start a new conversation, set it to GPT-4, and choose either "Browsing" or "Plugins" mode. After enabling Plugins mode, you will need to install plugins from the store.

ChatGPT can now browse the web to find up-to-date information. It also supports other plug-ins---for example, it can turn to Wolfram for computations, OpenTable for restaurant reservations, and Instacart for grocery orders. Here's how to turn these features on.

You can activate ChatGPT's Web Browsing and Plugins features from ChatGPT's Settings. However, these features are available exclusively for ChatGPT Plus subscribers as of May 2023. You can sign up for ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month if you haven't done so already. In addition to these features, ChatGPT Plus gives you access to the more powerful and capable GPT 4 language model ---the free version of ChatGPT uses gpt-3.5-turbo.

To turn on Web Browsing and Plugins, open ChatGPT's Settings window. To find it, head to the ChatGPT website, click the three dots ("...") to the right of your name at the bottom-left corner of the screen, and select "Settings."

Click "Beta Features" at the left side of the Settings page to access the beta features panel.

Turn on the features you want to use here. You can activate either Web Browsing, Plugins, or both. In the future, other beta features may also appear here.

Now, start a new chat in ChatGPT with the "New Chat" button.

Before you write anything, click on GPT-4 as your preferred model, then click on the dropdown arrow and choose between the Default, Browsing, or Plugins modes.

While you can use the browsing features without any further work, you actually have to activate the plugins you need in plugin mode. Once you've selected the Plugins version of GPT-4, you'll see "No plugins enabled."

To enable specific plugins, click the dropdown arrow to the right of "No plugins enabled," and then select "Plugin store."

ChatGPT will inform you about how plugins work. Note that they're not controlled by OpenAI, and they may send parts of your ChatGPT conversation to an external service. Finally, note that ChatGPT itself will choose when to use plugins during a conversation based on which plugins you have enabled.

Click "OK" to proceed.

Choose the plugins you want to use and click "Install" to install them for your ChatGPT account. You can also uninstall plugins from your account here. Close the plugin store when you're done.

Now you should see small icons representing your active plugins below the "GPT-4" option at the top of the page.

Click on the dropdown next to these icons to see which are active, and toggle your plugins on and off. You can also access the Plugin store from here.

Now you're ready to use plugins with ChatGPT.

To invoke the web browsing feature, ask a question that requires internet-based information, such as "What's the latest update about OpenAI?" or "Who won the Oscars this year?". ChatGPT will display "Browsing the web..." and try to find the information for you.

Once the plugins are activated in your settings, you can instruct ChatGPT to employ a specific plugin for a task. For instance, you could type "Use Wolfram to calculate the current distance between the Earth and Mars." ChatGPT will let you know which plugin it used.

ChatGPT doesn't replicate a standard web browser experience. Instead of presenting the entire webpage, it narrates the page content in a conversational tone, focusing on the information relevant to your query.

With web browsing functionality, ChatGPT can now sift through online content to fetch current information. Whether it's the latest news headlines, sports results, or data on a specific topic,  the AI can access the internet to find answers.

This expands the possibilities of what you can get it to do even more. For example, there's no need to manually feed it information newer than its cutoff date. The underlying model may be "stuck" in 2021 from a knowledge perspective, but if can browse the web to find more up-to-date information---just like Bing Chat .

When we tried this feature, we didn't always get ChatGPT to access the web consistently to get the information required to complete the requested task. However, adding something like "check the web" to your prompt will do it every time.

Consider plugins as add-ons to your ChatGPT. They are the tools that empower ChatGPT to integrate with third-party services, widening its capability spectrum. Whether checking out markets, doing math , or browsing shopping deals, these plugins are your gateway to many tasks.

According to information about plugins on the OpenAI blog , numerous plugins help ChatGPT do a better job. Wolfram, for example, provides it with some computation and math muscle. FiscalNote offers access to datasets for legal, political, and regulatory purposes. We're sure the list will expand over time, but for now, you can check out the initial plugins on OpenAI's blog or by browsing the aforementioned plugin store.

The introduction of web browsing and plugin features in ChatGPT Plus signifies a notable progression in making AI technology more powerful and usable. With access to the web and specialized plugins, OpenAI has just turbo-charged what's possible with ChatGPT.

Tips & Tricks

Troubleshooting, how to disable chatgpt chat history & training data usage.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a phenomenal artificial intelligence chatbot that uses the Large Language Model deep learning to provide incredibly useful, powerful, and human-like responses. By default, ChatGPT will keep a history of your chats with the chatbot, and also use your interactions with ChatGPT to train and improve the models.

Some users may wish to change these settings for privacy reasons, or for personal preference, and that can be done.

How to Disable ChatGPT Chat History & Training Data Use

  • Go to https://chat.openai.com and login with your OpenAI account as usual
  • Click on your name in the bottom corner of the ChatGPT window
  • Click on “Settings”
  • Choose “Data Controls”
  • Look for the setting for “Chat history & training” and toggle that OFF

How to disable Chat History and Training Data in ChatGPT

Your chat history with ChatGPT will no longer be stored or maintained (and the sidebar with chat history will be blank), and your data and chats will no longer be used as training data or to improve the LLM.

The text below the “Chat history & training” setting explains it as follows:

“Save new chats on this browser to your history and allow them to be used to improve our models. Unsaved chats will be deleted from our systems within 30 days. This setting does not sync across browsers or devices.”

Note this only works with ChatGPT interactions from the OpenAI apps ( for iPhone and iPad , or Android) or through using the ChatGPT website . Any setting adjustment made here will not have any impact on you if you use Microsoft Edge to access GPT 4 or Bing for the same purpose .

It’s really up to you whether or not this particular setting is appropriate to have enabled or disabled, and your individual privacy intentions and desires. But whatever your thoughts and perspectives, it’s good to have this setting and be aware of it, and how it impacts your ChatGPT usage.

Microsoft's decision to supercharge Bing with ChatGPT technology has transformed the also-ran search engine into a chatbot with the power to search the web and tell you what it found.

This has the potential to radically change the way we use the Internet, and competitors like Google's Bard AI are already surfacing to meet new demand for search engines that talk back.

But as the race to create the ultimate search chatbot gathers speed, all most of us really care about is what this new tech can do to make life better for the average person. We've spent decades learning how to understand the web via search engine results; how will these search bots improve on that?

At time of publication it's too early to say, as Bing with ChatGPT is still in a limited testing phase and not widely available to the public. But Microsoft is making it available to more folks every week, and soon it will be broadly available alongside a slew of competitors. When you can access Bing with ChatGPT I think you'll get a kick out of chatting with it — but will it actually be any more useful to you than a Google search?

I've had access to the new Bing with ChatGPT for nearly two weeks now, ever since I went up to Redmond to cover the Microsoft ChatGPT event , and I've learned a lot about how it works and how to make the most of it. I also happen to be planning a trip to the Netherlands later this year, so I thought it would be interesting to ask Bing to plan it for me. This is exactly the sort of task the new Bing is designed to help with, according to Microsoft, and it's a great opportunity to show you how well it works.

Here's how it went when I asked Bing with ChatGPT to plan my trip for me.

How to use ChatGPT for travel advice

I don't know about you, but when I'm planning a trip I start with one of three key data points—where am I going, when am I going, what am I doing — and fill in the rest from there. I happen to have an old friend in the Netherlands I'd like to visit this year, and I already have plane tickets booked for April. I know where I'm going and when; now, I need to find accommodations and some good ideas for fun things to do while I'm there.

Before Bing with ChatGPT, I would simply go to my preferred search engine (Google) and start searching for ideas using simple phrases or even just keywords. I might search for "best cheap hotel in Amsterdam", for example, and then start combing through top listings and comparing them myself. My search engine might try to help by suggesting well-reviewed hotels or showing me room rates it thinks are "cheap", but in my experience these suggestions aren't very trustworthy and you really need to dig through airline and hotel websites yourself to find the best options.

Could Bing with ChatGPT do any better? I pulled it up and asked it "What are the best cheap hotels in Amsterdam?"

The response I got was brief and clear. After some filler ("There are many cheap hotels in Amsterdam that offer good value and comfort") it listed three hotels that were "some of the best ones according to online reviews," with brief two-sentence descriptions of each and follow-ups asking me what kind of hotel I'm looking for and whether I have any preferences in amenities or location.

Bing with ChatGPT search result

It's a pretty concise and helpful answer that, at a glance, seems more useful than the page of search results I got from Google, which has four "ad" links up top that require me to actually scroll down before I even get to the first "real" result.

Google search results page

But how good are Bing's answers? Well, to start off they're all the same answer—clicking each of the links for Bing's top 3 recommended cheap hotels in Amsterdam takes me to a Hotels.com page for the Travel Hotel Amsterdam, which is problematic since those links appear to point to three different hotels (The Toren, the Hotel De Hallen, and the Hotel V Fizeaustraat).

Obviously, that's not very helpful, so I scroll down to the block of hotel listings Bing has appended beneath its initial answer. This proves far more useful, as I can quickly skim brief listings (also charted on a map) for 9+ hotels in Amsterdam, replete with links, prices and user ratings.

More importantly, the links actually work, though they take me to Microsoft's Bing Travel page for a given hotel rather than the hotel's website. As it turns out, Microsoft's travel hubs are pretty good; I can see prices for the hotel across multiple booking websites, and I can even use Microsoft's Hotel Price trend checker to get a sense of how room prices rise and fall over time.

Bing with ChatGPT travel search result

Okay, that's actually pretty handy.

However, it doesn't appear as though ChatGPT really played a key role in delivering the results I wanted. In fact, I bet I would have gotten better results if I'd just used vanilla Bing without a chatbot plugged in, because I would have gotten the same nudge towards Microsoft's Bing Travel listings and at least the first three links wouldn't have been to the wrong website.

But hey, Bing with ChatGPT is still in early public testing and as multiple Microsoft reps have said in the weeks since it debuted, mistakes are likely to occur. Maybe it will do better with a vaguer question, like what's fun to see and do in Amsterdam.

'I am sorry, I don't know how to discuss this topic'

So I ask Bing with ChatGPT "What are some fun things to do when visiting Amsterdam?" Bing's answer, when it comes, is surprisingly unhelpful: "I am sorry, I don't know how to discuss this topic."

Bing with ChatGPT

What the heck, Bing?

This has been one of the key takeaways of my time using Bing with ChatGPT: You cannot trust it. At least, not yet. Not only can you not trust that it will give you an accurate or appropriate response, you can't even trust that it will understand what you're asking it to do, or that it will respond as you expect. Sometimes it gives answers that seem startlingly insightful or helpful, and other times it responds with garbage, errors or simple refusals.

In this sense, traditional search engines still have a big advantage over search chatbots because we've learned how to use them effectively. We can anticipate how a search engine will read our query and respond, so we can customize our question to get the best results using things like keywords, symbols and operators like AND/OR.

But I'm not one to give up on new tech just because it's a bit buggy. I know Bing with ChatGPT can give me some interesting ideas for what to do on my trip; I just need to ask it again, maybe in a different way this time. I try again, asking Bing to "recommend me some fun things to do in Amsterdam."

Bing with ChatGPT

This time I get a more useful response. Bing zeroes in on the usual suspects, recommending me popular Amsterdam tourist attractions like the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank house and the Red Light District. It also asks me to provide more details on my interests so it can offer me better answers so I do, telling Bing "I like visiting museums, eating and drinking at great restaurants, and smoking marijuana" (which is legal to consume both in Amsterdam and here in California, rest assured).

Again, Bing with ChatGPT comes through with decent results. The chatbot repeats itself a bit, again recommending the Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank house as good museums to visit, but who am I to argue? I've never been. They probably bear repeating, and anyway it's easy to skim past that bit to read the restaurant recommendations Bing has for me.

The chatbot also encourages me to visit some of the coffee shops in Amsterdam where marijuana is legally available, though it's careful to warn me that "smoking cannabis in public is illegal in Amsterdam" and I "should also be careful not to have more than five grams of weed in your possession or cause a public disturbance", lest my trip turn sour. Thanks Bing!

Bing with ChatGPT

Of course, the ChatGPT tech underlying this new Bing is just making it appear as though the search engine has a mind of its own. Really it's just using machine learning and other tricks to construct sentences that look correct based on its training, which involves reading massive amounts of text and then generating sentences and responses that are approved or declined by human overseers. In fact, you can be one of those overseers, as Bing with ChatGPT provides easy-to-click approve/disapprove buttons on each response as well as a dedicated Feedback button on the page to provide more details to Microsoft.

Instead of actually caring about you, Bing with ChatGPT is parsing sentences from websites around the web and using them construct its responses, effectively repurposing the words of writers like myself. You can see where Bing pulls answers from by letting your mouse hover over the hyperlinked text and footnotes in each response, which at least gives you the option of clicking through to read the source material if you want more details. As it turns out, Bing's parochial concern for my wellbeing in Amsterdam is sourced from a site called Ganja Papi, so maybe I should be thanking Papi instead.

Of course it's still early days for Bing with ChatGPT, and the service is likely to change significantly in the year ahead. Hopefully this guide has given you some tips on how you can use Bing to plan your next trip, but it can do a lot more than that—check out our recent rundown of the 7 things you didn’t know that ChatGPT can do for some more cool ideas on how to use it.

How to use ChatGPT Plus: From image generation to My GPTs

Y ou signed up for ChatGPT Plus to get more out of the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, but what's next? Advanced Data Analysis, image generation with DALL-E 3 , and internet access -- learning how to use these tools can be a daunting prospect. We'll walk you through how to get started using all the benefits of a Plus subscription.

Also: How to use ChatGPT

After using ChatGPT daily for a few months, I took the leap and upgraded to a ChatGPT Plus subscription. The upgrade sets me back $20 a month, but since I use it multiple times a day for work and many, many other things, it was worth it.

How to use ChatGPT Plus

ChatGPT Plus is easy to use, and OpenAI has made it even easier by combining many tools into GPT-4. To use ChatGPT Plus, you'll need a  Plus subscription , which gives you priority access to new features and access to GPT-4, image generation through DALL-E 3, and more. To upgrade to ChatGPT Plus, you can log in to your OpenAI account and click on Upgrade in the lower left corner of the screen.

Also: ChatGPT vs. ChatGPT Plus: Is it worth the subscription fee?

Navigate the table of contents on the left of this page if you're looking for a specific feature.

Using GPT-4: Web browsing, DALL-E 3, and data analysis

A ChatGPT Plus subscription plan gives you access to GPT-4 , which is the same model powering Microsoft Copilot . GPT-4 is OpenAI's most capable model yet and is also the largest widely available large language model (LLM). OpenAI recently combined many of GPT-4's features into one functionality, so any time Plus users select GPT-4, they can access most of the other features included with their subscription service.

GPT-4: Attaching images and files

ChatGPT Plus can process images and files on all platforms: web, iOS, and Android. ChatGPT Plus' Code Interpreter has been renamed to Advanced Data Analysis, which is an OpenAI plugin that lets users upload files to create and interpret code, analyze data, and more. Image and file analysis is now folded into GPT-4 and available for Plus subscribers.

GPT-4: Image generation with DALL-E 3

ChatGPT Plus subscribers can ask the bot to create images at any time while using GPT-4 -- there's no need to enable the AI image generator.

Also:  DALL-E 3 in ChatGPT Plus is helpful but also gave me images of laptops from 1900

One of the biggest upgrades ChatGPT has made to its Plus subscription is the ability to create custom GPT bots, dubbed My GPTs -- the feature was so overwhelmingly popular that it forced OpenAI to temporarily halt new subscriptions.

You can learn how to create your own custom GPT-4 bots here , but we'll show you how to access this feature with your Plus subscription.

Voice chatting with ChatGPT

ChatGPT can now also process voice inputs and it can respond back in a shockingly natural manner, filler words included. The voice feature is available for iOS and Android users with a Plus subscription and users in the free tier.

When did OpenAI release an all-in-one GPT-4 experience?

OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, released an all-in-one experience for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, automatically switching tools for them after its DevDay developers conference .

Also:  Can ChatGPT predict the future? Training AI to figure out what happens next

This experience means subscribers can now access DALL-E 3, Browse with Bing, and use Advanced Data Analysis by just selecting GPT-4 without having to switch between each tool before sending a prompt.

What is included in ChatGPT Plus?

A ChatGPT Plus subscription gives you access to the above features and priority access to new releases. Plus is different from a ChatGPT Team subscription and from a ChatGPT Enterprise subscription, which is a service for businesses.

Also: ChatGPT Enterprise vs. ChatGPT Team: Which is the best for your business?

Here's a breakdown of the different features for each tier:

What are Custom Instructions?

Custom Instructions are a way to tailor ChatGPT's responses to your preferences. You can add instructions to your account that will determine how the AI chatbot will respond to each of your prompts.

Also: 6 helpful ways to use ChatGPT's Custom Instructions

For example, I prefer getting my summaries in bullet points, highlighting the most important information, so I added this to my Custom Instructions. Each time ChatGPT responds to me with explanations or summaries, it does so in bullet points.

Custom Instructions was originally launched as a feature that's exclusive to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, but the capability is now available to all free users.

Where are the ChatGPT Plugins?

ChatGPT Plugins were removed from ChatGPT entirely after OpenAI added the custom GPTs. GPT bots work very much like Plugins, so OpenAI replaced them with GPTs.

Nagy frissítést kapott a ChatGPT

Nagy frissítést kapott a ChatGPT

OpenAI on Twitter: “Our new GPT-4 Turbo is now available to paid ChatGPT users. We’ve improved capabilities in writing, math, logical reasoning, and coding. Source: https://t.co/fjoXDCOnPr pic.twitter.com/I4fg4aDq1T / Twitter” Our new GPT-4 Turbo is now available to paid ChatGPT users. We’ve improved capabilities in writing, math, logical reasoning, and coding.
