An African Safari Adventure Changed a Mother-Teen Bond Forever

safari company george

Ever since I first saw Sydney Pollack’s Oscar-winning film Out of Africa , I’ve swooned at the idea of camping in the Serengeti with a swashbuckling lover and reenacting the scene where Robert Redford washes Meryl Streep’s hair. But instead, when my bucket-list African safari adventure finally happened last August, I found myself sharing a tent with my sometimes stinky and often sassy 18-year-old son, Gabe, who was experiencing one heck of a high school graduation present.

Turns out this “gap year” mom-and-teen trip is quite common, according to the owner of our bespoke safari company , George Mavroudis, a Tanzanian-born Greek Cypriot who has been leading luxury mobile safaris through the wilds of Tanzania for nearly three decades. Our small group included one patient, child-free friend and three mom-teen pairs. Two of the moms shared custody with their exes, so time with their teens was extra precious .

Zebras on the Runway

How an African Safari Adventure Changed a Mother/Son Bond Forever | NextTribe

After spending the night near Kilimanjaro, we jumped in a bush plane that only allowed 35 pounds of luggage per person (what?!) and headed straight for the Serengeti. We knew we weren’t in Kansas anymore when zebras and giraffes had to move off the runway for us to land.

Our small group included one patient, child-free friend and three mom-teen pairs.

Driving across the savanna on our way to camp, we kept begging our drivers to stop for photo ops of the wildlife.  We realized there was a good reason for the khaki clothing we’d been advised to bring: Turns out the blue and black sheets (the usual color of my son’s jeans and sweats) we periodically passed were hung in the wild because they attract and catch tsetse flies.

Our two-jeep group quickly set a record for sighting more lions than any other our safari guides had hosted that year: 65 in ten days. One of our drivers even took to calling me “Mama Simba.”

After the last game drive of each day, the friendly and attentive African camp staff asked who wanted a shower before our lavish dinners were served, and big buckets of water were heated on the fire for each tent. My son earned the name “Two Buckets.”

Big African Bugs

Our quintessential safari expert, George, was part bushman, part storyteller, part encyclopedia. He does not believe in hermetically sealed safaris where guests stay in luxury lodges and visit the same animals in the same reserves each day. It’s important to him that his guests get to know his country in a real way, from bustling marketplaces to dusty back roads.

One of the eight wives of a chief asked my son if he wanted many wives of his own.

George even gave Gabe his first stick shift driving lesson in the Jeep one morning on the salt flats of Lake Eyasi, but there were bigger lessons too.  Throughout the trip, he saw the mutual respect between our guide and the native population. We had the privilege of visiting George’s friends in their homes, whether they lived in adobe huts with cow skin doors or slept under the stars.

One of the eight wives of a chief of the cow-herding Barbaig tribe asked in Swahili if my son wanted many wives of his own. George answered, “ Yes, but they need to know that Gabe is spooked by the big African bugs.” Without skipping a beat, she responded, “Well, how will he tend the cows?”

Sunset on the Serengeti

How an African Safari Adventure Changed a Mother/Son Bond Forever | NextTribe

A few days after driving through the wondrous , ten-mile wide Ngorogoro Crater, where bull elephants go to retire and wildebeest march across in uniform as if pulled by a rope, we walked through the bush on a hunt with the nomadic Hadza tribe. As amazing as it is that the Hadza ’s way of life has persisted for thousands of years while world empires have risen and fallen, that wasn’t what impressed Gabe the most about them.

The Hadza ’s way of life has persisted for thousands of years while world empires have risen and fallen.

A few years ago, National Geographic sent an anthropologist to study the tribe, including their excrement, since they have some of the healthiest digestive systems on the planet. Gabe loved that they affectionately referred to the professor as “Dr. Shit.”

Looking back, Gabe said that one of his favorite things about the trip was leaning out of the sunroof of the Jeep and seeing lions that weren’t in cages. But then he remembered the wooden twigs he liked to chew on that natives called “bush toothbrushes.” Or maybe, since the legal drinking age in Tanzania is 18, it was ordering his first whiskey around the campfire after a day in the bush.

And I replaced my Robert Redford fantasy. I actually can’t think of a better experience than a mid-afternoon beer with my son at camp in between game drives, or of a more unforgettable moment than raising a glass of champagne together to our final sunset on the Serengeti.

Safari Co. Building Tents At Campground

By: Rick Kessler | Published on: Apr 18, 2016 | Categories: Industry News | 0 comments

Adirondack Safari Co., which rents high-end ‘safari’ tents to campers, is setting up 20 permanent tents at Lake George Escape Campground in Lake George, N.Y., this year, the Times Union of Albany reported.

The setup, called  Adirondack Safari Village , is expected to be completed by May. With a coupon, the tents rent for $129 a night.

The company also will continue to set up the wooden structures at the Hearthstone Point State Campground on Lake George or at private residences within a certain range.

Owners Mark and Jennifer Matteo launched Adirondack Safari last summer and are expanding the company this year with the new permanent site and a new line of larger tents.

I have see that you point out 10 of the Best African Safari Tour Operators that is Great but there is another company that deserves space in the top 10 – Foot Slopes Tours and Safaris ltd, website https://www.footslopestours.com/ They organize the best private custom safari, honeymoon, Kilimanjaro climbing, hiking and trekking mountain family holidays in Tanzania. They have experienced safari guides and staffs are best in the industry.

' src=

In essence it’s a tough pick for the best safari companies as best is relative and times change. Moreover, companies evolve for better and unfortunately others for worse. There are also local based companies that have competence and overall good service.

Check out https://www.alphadeantoursandsafaris.com/ as well as https://www.africamagicalsafaris.com/index.php

' src=

It would also be nice to consider Kenya-based safari companies like Explorer Kenya Tours and Travel for honeymooners safaris, photography safaris and Kenya wildlife safaris. See them on http://www.explorerkenya.com .

' src=

This is not a definitive, or updated list of the world’s ”best” safari companies. I think A&K should surely make the proper list, along with & Beyond. But someone has rightfully pointed out that these companies are quite expensive. A few years ago, I enjoyed a fabulous African Safari in Kenya with Shoor Safaris ( http://www.shoortravel.com/ ) at much cheaper rates using the same properties I was being offered by a top US operator. So do shop around and book wisely.

' src=

Thanks for your comment Carol. Sure, it’s not a “definitive” list. At the end of the day, it all depends on what YOU’re looking for. Choose wisely and “safari njema”! 😉

' src=

Based on the dates you posted the article, that was true but now things have really changed. Those tour companies that are not keeping up with the advancement of technology especially online marketing are being overtaken by smaller operators who have invested heavily in online marketing.

' src=

Most of the companies listed above are very expensive. I found a newer tour operator based in the US that runs their trips out of an office in Tanzania. They where almost half the price of the quote I got from Micato and 35% less than Thomsons. Our trip was great. I guess that the others charge more because they have a name. Anyway, check them out and see if they can do your trip cheaper http://www.etripafrica.com .

Good Safari.

' src=

I have gone through the list of safari companies listed and while it is true that they do offer great services, I am not sure that they are the top 10. There are a number of companies operating regionally and internationally that offer just as good or better services.

Another thing is there are some good companies who have had their names sullied by one disgruntled client over the most minor issue. Tour guides are humans and something like a flat tire is something that is sometimes unavoidable. However, some clients since they book these tours way in advance a few things could have happened in the months leading up to the safari making them wish they hadn’t booked. Take the world economic crisis, a client books his safari one or two years in advance only to lose a job. So reviews by clients should be taken in totality not from one disgruntled client.

' src=

Hello Michael.

I have seen the list of the top 10 safari companies doing safaris in Africa. In Uganda you have listed Volcanoes only. There is another company that deserves space in the top 10 – Advantage Safaris ltd, website http://www.advantage-safaris.com . They organize the best birdwatching, gorilla tracking, chimpanzee tracking and family holidays in both Uganda and Rwanda. The guides and safari drivers employed by Advantage Safaris ltd are the best in the industry.

' src=

All safari goers should be a little wary of the ‘group style’ safaris on offer. Remember that you are trying to get close to wildlife and be sensitive as well as be educated. Larger groups, of say 16 people or more, in numerous vehicles can find this a little difficult. Large groups are often led by ‘an expert’ with driver/guides in the other vehicles. Whilst this keeps the cost per head down some the overall ‘life time experience ‘ can get a little diluted by sharing one so called ‘expert’ between 16-20 group members.

Tanzania is a wonderful safari destination but you cannot beat a small group of up to 8 visitors being guided by two excellent guides in two well equipped vehicles. Guides that know the back roads and want to explore.

Camp in remote locations, don’t be surrounded by cement in a lodge. It costs more but these basic rules can get a visitor closer to that dream vacation.

' src=

I agree that it is impossible to limit the world’s best safari companies down to a list of 10, especially when each safari company is focused on a different region and/or type of trip (adventure, family, honeymoon, luxury, etc.). In many cases it’s like comparing apples and oranges.

' src=

Thanks for the feedback, you definitely have a point here. Of course, they can't possibly make a "real" top 10 out of the thousands of safari companies out there. But then again, how would you do it? Did you check out their methodology? Basically, it is based on surveys that follow specific categories: education, sustainability, quality of service and spirit of adventure.

About the "trip of a lifetime" experience. This goal should always be on top of the list, totally agree with you. The question is: are they all going for it? I don't think so. I have read a few stories where people were really not well catered for. In my opinion, there are always companies out there that are looking for a quick buck no matter what… even if it has to be at the expense of their clients.

Not quite sure what you're trying to imply about the recession bit. Did you read that? Possible but am not aware of it.

' src=

Hello Michael,

Interesting topic that is being discussed here. I must say though that the premise of NG a bit of an awkward one is. 'Delivering a trip of a lifetime the first time'?? In my opinion a safari outfitter should ALWAYS try to achieve this goal the first time. Now NG suggests that there are a number of operators out there that are not doing their utmost to accommodate clients the first time and that they will only do so in times of recession.

I therefore dare to say that this survey is absolute nonsense, as NG will not have the possibility to survey 100's of operators. Why? Because they have other things to do than being a consumer watchdog on safaris. I am not implying that the mentioned companies are no good, I am just saying that out of all the thousands of companies selling safaris, you can not just make a list of 10.

What do you think yourself Michael?

Cheers from Holland.

Escape to the Garden Route's Epicentre

George was initially established as a timber hub in the late-eighteenth century – and it’s not hard to see why. Spread across a 10-kilometre plateau at the foot of the verdant Outeniqua Mountains and surrounded by alpine forest and perpetual streams, George is conveniently located halfway between the cities of Cape Town and Port Elizabeth - making it a perfect stopover point when travelling between the two.

George has come a long way from its timber-felling roots. Now a popular tourist destination and golfing mecca, the town boasts world-class golf courses (such as Oubaai, Le Grand George and Fancourt) designed by PGA professionals. Popular annual events include the George Old Car Show, George Cheese Festival, and the George NBM Sevens Premier League.

The town serves as an ideal base from which to explore the nature-lovers paradise of the surrounding Garden Route which is renowned for its lush forests and cliff faces that drop into the sea. The nearby Tsitsikamma National Park is home to the Otter Trail—an intense five-day hike through the Garden Route. Wildlife in the area includes klipspringer, leopard, duiker, and black eagles. Shy elephants are still rumoured to be found in the forests.

George Highlights

  • George is the sixth-oldest town in South Africa and conveniently located halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth
  • In the heart of the Garden Route, framed by the Outeniqua Mountains
  • Nearby attractions include the historic Montagu Pass, the Tsitsikamma National Park, and the Knysna Elephant Park
  • The nearby George Airport services domestic flights from Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban
  • The gateway to the Garden Route, and also an excellent base from which to explore surrounding towns

Best time to go George

Frequently asked questions.

We've taken the liberty to answer everything you may need to know about visiting George

As a self-drive destination, there are many routes to choose from, all depending on how much time you have! Our guests often ask us how long the ideal Garden Route trip should be. So, here are our thoughts and suggestions to get the ball rolling!

Two Weeks or More

When guests have as much as two weeks, you have enough time to drive the route in both directions and touch on many of the key towns and attractions. We usually recommend starting in Cape Town, then visiting Robertson or Swellendam, enjoying the Route 62, spending time in Oudtshoorn, and finally joining the Coastal Route at George. From here we recommend a few nights in Plettenberg Bay before visiting a game reserve in the Eastern Cape area. On your return to Cape Town, we’d recommend a stop in the Tsitsikamma, then Knysna or Wilderness and a stay along the Whale Route and then Stellenbosch or Franschhoek before heading back to Cape Town.

One Week or More

If your time is limited to a week, we’d recommend a drive along the Coastal Route, spending time in either Knysna or Plettenberg Bay with a day trip to Oudtshoorn. From here you can venture to Eastern Cape for a safari. We’d recommend leaving the car and flying back to Cape Town or to your next destination from Port Elizabeth to save on time.

Three to Four Nights

If your calendar only allows three to four nights on the Garden Route, then we’d probably recommend a guided tour. Our guided tours take the stress out of driving and enable you to see many things in a short time. (We also like to think that they give you a taster for your next trip!)

Less Than Two Nights

You require at least three or four days to explore the Garden Route. If you’ve only got two nights, our consultants will suggest a two-night stay in Hermanus or perhaps spending some time in the Winelands. The Garden Route needs to be enjoyed at leisure, and the long distances mean that a whistle-stop tour is no fun.

In a destination surrounded by nature reserves, mountains, forests, rivers, lagoons, estuaries and beautiful sandy beaches, most of the action takes place outdoors.

Whale-watching is a popular attraction during mating and calving seasons – July to November – and the cliff walks, and vantage points along the coast are excellent. Dolphin and whale cruises offer some extreme close-ups of these fascinating creatures. Not to mention, that brave guests can partake in Shark Cage diving.

Meerkats, ostriches and crocodiles, and olives, vast caves are championed in the Little Karoo that surrounds Oudtshoorn.

Several nature reserves offer spectacular hikes, mountain bike trails, horse trails and canoeing expeditions. Best of the bunch is the peninsula in Robberg Nature Reserve in Plettenberg Bay for hiking, Harkervile forest for biking, Equitrailing for Horses and more. We are the experts because we have done it all ourselves and speak from first-hand experiences.

For those keen to get the adrenaline pumping, Bloukrans Bungee Jump , at 216m, was at one stage the highest in the world. It presents a unique viewpoint of the spectacular gorge — if you can keep your eyes open, that is! Add to that zip-lining through the Tsitsikamma Forests close to Storms River, also an outing of note and one that raises the heart rate just a tad!

The primates at Monkeyland are a superb example of a successful ecotourism venture and is an experience not to be missed. Many rescued primates species have free reign in 23 hectares of forest, crisscrossed with trails and wobbly footbridges suspended between ancient yellowwoods.

Similarly, its neighbours in the Crags, Birds of Eden, The Elephant Sanctuary, Tenikwa et al. are all fine candidates for a full day of rehabilitated animal adventure.

With such spectacular scenery, conventional sporting activities take on unconventional characteristics. This includes swimming, running, hiking, horse riding, mountain climbing, canoeing, cycling, archery, fishing, diving, surfing... we could go on all day!

In particular, golfers are well catered to as courses are of international calibre, in most cases award-winning and offer spectacular scenery.  These most notably include Fancourt, Pezula, Oubaai, Pinnacle Point, and Simola.

The Whale Route and Overberg region run from Cape Town to Cape Agulhas and inland to Swellendam. Flanked by some of the most spectacular coastlines in Africa, our Whale Route is worth a stop. Each year, between July and November, our shores are chosen by Southern Right and Humpback Whales to calve, and this has afforded Hermanus the title of “best land-based whale watching” in the world. What better way to walk off a big breakfast than by taking a stroll along its gorgeous coastal promenade? Enjoy the fresh ocean breeze and have your camera ready to capture the creatures frolicking nearby in the bay.

The coastline is also famed for being a great white shark country, with the small coastal town of Gansbaai offering world-famous cage diving and boat-based shark viewing.

Inland the area is equally as spectacular and includes pretty villages such as Stanford, Swellendam , and its botanical gardens, Harold Porter, perched beautifully between mountain and sea. If you have time, consider stopping off at the southernmost tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas where the Indian and Atlantic oceans converge. Don’t forget that Hermanus has a superb wine route, the Hemel en Aarde valley, home to some award-winning estates.

Route 62 makes for the ideal self-drive destination. Passing through many small rural communities, the Route 62 meanders its way between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn. Winding through impressive mountain passes and many beautifully preserved little ‘dorpies’ (small towns) on its way. Route 62 is the inland alternative to N2 which runs closer to our Southern coastline. The route encompasses dramatic mountains, stunning landscapes, scenic passes, rivers, vineyards and fruit orchards as it winds gently through the Breede River Valley and Klein Karoo. Hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and 4x4 trails are found in most of the villages along the way, while others offer fly fishing, canoeing and rock climbing. Then, there are the numerous wine cellars and estates that make Route 62 reputedly the world’s longest wine route.

The perfect base is Oudtshoorn . Celebrating “Afrikaans” culture by offering country and farm-style living, through small and quaint, often quirky properties that allow you the time and vicinity to enjoy the ostriches, crocodiles, caves, meerkats and olives the area is well known for.

Coastal Route, Highlighting Knysna and Plettenberg Bay

Our Garden Route coastal drive portion usually starts in Mossel Bay , with the next stop being George (ever so slightly inland and well-known for its famous Fancourt Golf Course). Wilderness comes next just down the road from George, famed for its wild and impressive stretch of white sandy beach, followed by Sedgefield and then eventually Knysna (pronounced NIZE-na), which nestles on the banks of an estuary, surrounded by forests, lakes and beaches.

A mere 25 minutes ahead, Plettenberg Bay is a seaside destination with spectacular scenery and a bay so beautiful that the Portuguese called it Bahia Formosa, which means “beautiful bay”. Today it’s affectionately known as Plett. Plett offers white beaches and a bay bordered by the protected Robberg peninsula in the south and the Keurbooms estuary in the north, setting the scene for a classic sun-sea-sand holiday destination.

Knysna occupies a narrow shelf between a large lagoon and the sheer Tsitsikamma Mountains. Knysna Lagoon is protected by two large cliffs – called ‘The Heads’ – through which a boat-sized gap leads out into the Indian Ocean. The western arm is a nature reserve accessed by ferry, and the other is home to many of our most recommended boutique properties since their views are breathtaking.

Enjoy a malaria-free safari at the very end of the Garden Route in the Eastern Cape . Port Elizabeth officially marks the end of the Garden Route and is home to an area where early settlers established themselves, thus rapidly affecting wildlife numbers.

However, in 1930, the Addo Elephant Park was established to protect the last remaining animals in the area. Today, it’s a shining beacon to the region and was an instigator of more private farms in the vicinity being slowly purchased and restocked with wildlife over the years. The area is now home to some of South Africa’s most well-known lodges. The lodges are top-rated as they are the closest ‘authentic safari’ experience to Cape Town and is located in a malaria-free area.

Reserves such as Kwandwe, Shamwari, Lalibela, Kariega and Addo Elephant Park, are situated close to Port Elizabeth at the Garden Route’s eastern end. This provides you with a wealth of options that suit all budgets and is a memorable way to end the most wonderful adventure on the Garden Route.

Getting to and around the Garden Route

Most people fly internationally to South Africa into Cape Town Airport or Johannesburg Airport. From here, there are daily flights to and from Port Elizabeth and George (both along the route) if required.

The most exciting and flexible way to appreciate the Garden Route is by hiring a car. This allows you to explore the area at your own pace, as well as the luxury of spontaneity and being able to stop as much or as little as you fancy to get those snaps! It's also the more wallet-friendly means of exploration within our country as you are not paying for a guide, their transport or accommodation. It's also the best destination for those who enjoy self-driving holidays! The roads are extremely well signposted, in excellent condition in accordance with international standards, offering lots of opportunity for gas/petrol stations and loo breaks along the way. Also, of course, our scenery means the journey itself is part of the fun! Some guests choose to drive one direction and fly back the opposite way if time does not allow for exploration with a return trip.

For those who prefer not to drive or have limited time available to them, there is the option to do the area justice with a guided tour. We have some fantastic and uber-experienced guides on-hand.

The most cost-effective tour option is a scheduled shared tour, where you travel with other guests. These include organised inclusions and follows pre-designated stops along the route. If you prefer a private tour, we can tailor it to suit your time, budget and interests. The latter offers more spontaneity because you don't have others to consider. You also have the luxury of choice, which understandably makes it a pricier option.

The Garden Route has a Mediterranean Maritime climate, with moderately hot summers, and mild to chilly winters. It is one of the richest rainfall areas in South Africa. Most of the rains occur in the winter months, brought on by the humid sea-winds from the Indian ocean. The Garden Route's temperate weather falls between two climatic regions of summer and winter rainfall, so it rains mostly at night, keeping the area perennially green.

Spring (Sept): You can feel spring in the air by the end of August and into September. October can be quite mixed because, just when you think summer has arrived, another cold front moves in.

Summer (Nov - Mar): The months of November to March are warmer, with December to February seeing midsummer daily temperatures of about 24-30ºC /75.2- 86ºF.

Autumn (May): Temperatures start cooling down from about April, but it can still be very pleasant until June.

Winter (Jun - Aug): The days may be bright and warm, but it gets cold in the evening and can be rainy overnight (8 -17ºC / 46.4-62.6 ºF).

Yes, a resounding YES! Golfers are spoilt for choice along the Cape and Garden Route. Since we have an abundance of space, so many gorgeous landscapes and varied biomes in our little slice of the world, we have lots to "play with" in terms of creating some of the most wonderful championship courses.

Many of these are top resorts and destinations as a whole too, where one can stay in-house and have access to the leading home courses, as well as the opportunity to explore the experiences that are on offer outside the extensive grounds. Top examples of these and firm favourites for discerning golfers are Pearl Valley, Fancourt and Pezula . Between them, we have Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player designed courses and the most southern golf course in Africa as noteworthy highlights. Just a word of warning that you will get distracted by the beauty of the ocean, vineyards and mountains during the game!

The extraordinary Pearl Valley is located just outside of Paarl, so within our Cape Winelands and ideal as a base here to play and stay. If you stay here as part of a Garden Route itinerary, it will generally be towards the start of your trip — and what a great way to kick things off!

Fancourt is located in the heart of George, towards the middle of the Garden Route. It is home to three championship courses, yet its crowning glory is The Links. We recommend staying on-premises at The Manor. If you are an avid golfer, we recommend a minimum of three nights, especially if you wish to play two of the three courses.

At the very least, you should visit Pezula , meaning "high up with the gods". This course is aptly named as it is perched right on the edge of the Indian Ocean, on Knysna's Eastern Head, the peninsula that divides the town's sleepy lagoon from the wildest of oceans.

Other notable courses along the route worthy of attention are Oubaai (stay in George, Mosselbay or Wilderness), Simola (stay in Knysna or Plett), Pinnacle Point (stay in Mosselbay), or Arabella (stay in Hermanus).

What our guests say about Nelia

March 28, 2024
Experienced a double booking
Before payment, we experienced an issue of double booking, where suddenly our chosen lodging is only available for 2 out of 4 days. I hope Safari.com can improve their system to avoid this in the future. While it will be an inconvenience on our part to have to move lodging half way, we also understand the high demand of the lodging as we make the booking just 5 months before departure. I really appreciate Nelia's quick action informing us and providing an alternative plan which works for us. Overall it was quite a smooth booking process.

Guinness World Records

World’s oldest conjoined twins Lori and George die aged 62

lori and george schappell split as adults and babies

Guinness World Records are saddened to learn of the deaths of the oldest living conjoined twins and oldest female conjoined twins ever , Lori and George Schappell .

They passed away on Sunday 7 April at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania due to undisclosed causes, as per their   obituaries published by Leibensperger Funeral Homes.

They were 62 years 202 days old – nine years older than the second-oldest female conjoined twins ever recorded.

Born in Pennsylvania, USA, on 18 September 1961, Lori and George (formerly named Dori) had partially fused skulls, sharing vital blood vessels and 30% of their brains (the frontal and parietal lobes).

Lori and George as babies

Despite being joined at the head, the twins differed in many ways.

Lori was able-bodied but George had spina bifida and could not walk. He sat in a wheelchair-type stool which Lori pushed around.

George enjoyed a successful career as a country singer, whilst Lori was a trophy-winning ten-pin bowler. Lori also worked at a hospital laundry for several years during the ‘90s, arranging her schedule around George’s gigs, which took them around the world to countries including Germany and Japan.

Lori (left) and George (right) on ITV's This Morning (2011)

They became the world’s first same-sex conjoined twins to identify as different genders in 2007, when George started presenting as a man after revealing himself to be transgender.

He’d previously gone by the name Reba (after his idol, Reba McEntire) as he disliked the rhyming names that he and Lori were given.

The twins lived independently in a two-bedroom apartment in Pennsylvania. They each had their own room – alternating nights spent in each one – and tried to live their own individual lives as far as possible.

They took turns practising their separate hobbies; they said they effectively ‘zoned out’ when in each other’s room.

They also showered separately, using the shower curtain as a barrier while one showered and the other stood outside the bath.

Whenever they were asked if they wished they’d ever been separated, Lori and George always said no. “Would we be separated? Absolutely not. My theory is: why fix what is not broken?” George said in a 1997 documentary, which can be viewed above.

The twins defied all the predictions of medical professionals who said that they wouldn’t live past the age of 30. They became the oldest female conjoined twins ever in 2015, overtaking Masha and Dasha Krivoshlyapova who died aged 53.

Lori and George are survived by their father, six siblings, several nieces and nephews, and an extended family of friends.

Prince George’s County police released photos and video Friday of the people who fatally shot a trash removal company employee in Maryland last week.

The shooting happened around 3:40 p.m. on April 4 in the 6800 block of Greenvale Parkway in the unincorporated section of Hyattsville, Maryland.

When officers got to the scene, they found 30-year-old Idongesit Udosen, of Lanham, shot multiple times and lying in the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

In photos released Friday, two hooded and masked suspects can be seen pointing guns toward a trash truck, then running away from the truck. Police said they exited a gray Kia sedan before they got out and shot Udosen. Video of that vehicle is available on PGPD’s website.

Investigators are still looking into who the shooters are and why they targeted Udosen, though they said they don’t think the shooting was random.

Police are offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case.

Police are asking anyone with information about the case to call 301-516-2512 or contact Crime Solvers online .

World's oldest conjoined twins Lori and George Schappell die aged 62

The world's oldest conjoined twins have died at the age of 62.

Lori and George Schappell were born in 1961 in Pennsylvania with partially fused skulls and shared vital blood vessels and 30% of their brain, Guinness World Records reported.

The pair died on 7 April, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, according to an obituary posted online by Leibensperger Funeral Homes. The cause of death remains unknown.

Having held the title of the world's oldest living conjoined twins since 2022, they also became the first same-sex conjoined twins to identify as different genders after George came out as transgender in 2007.

The Schappell twins defied all medical predictions which said they would not live past the age of 30 and managed to live separate lives despite being attached.

George enjoyed a successful career as a country singer, according to Guinness World Records, while Lori was a trophy-winning tenpin bowler.

They also appeared in numerous documentaries and on ITV's This Morning in September 2011 to discuss their lives.

Footage of the pair showed how Lori - who was able-bodied - pushed George who had a condition known as spina bifida around on a wheelchair-type stool.

They lived in a two-bedroom flat in Pennsylvania and were able to practise separate hobbies and shower individually.

When asked if they wished to be separated in a 1997 documentary, George said: "Absolutely not. My theory is: why fix what is not broken?"

Lori and George are survived by their father, six siblings, several nieces and nephews, and an extended family of friends, according to the obituaries.

That time The Masters got upset with a nearby brewery | Around the Brew Bend

I've waited over a year to write this column, but with The Masters Golf Tournament taking place this week in Augusta, Georgia, there's no time better than now.

The redesigned Georgia Beer Co. brew for Black Nine Golf Beer.

It all started when one of our area breweries — Georgia Beer Company in nearby Valdosta, — brewed a beer in (veiled) honor of a game they love, as well as one of the great sporting events on earth, The Masters. But it ends with a cease and desist letter from The Masters itself, which now hangs framed inside the GBC tasting room, and total redesign of the can in question.

Walk with us here as we unravel it all.

In 2020-21, GBC released a new beer called "Back Nine" — it was an American lager that was low-calorie, light and easy drinking at just 4% ABV. It was nicknamed "The Golf Beer" because it was billed to be perfect to drink while golfing on a hot day — well, that, and the labels on the eventual cans that came out featured some familiar-looking golf imagery on it.

And it was imagery that raised a few eyebrows — especially those on The Masters legal team. But Georgia Beer Company co-founder J Ryce Martin said they only came up with the beer and the name because they felt it was ideal for a long day of golf, where "crushability" was the goal.

Designs on beer can

"(Myself and Georgia Beer co-founder Chris Jones) started getting into golf really heavily, but we wanted a beer that was super crushable on the beach, fishing, or just hanging out at the house," Martin told us. "We were just playing golf and came up with the name and thought it was pretty marketable."

The can featured a yellow photo of the state of Georgia on it, and a star where Valdosta was located on the map, while The Masters logo has a yellow photo of the United States on it, and a golf hole and golf flag where Augusta is located on the national map. Were they the same shape? No. But were the designs similar? One could argue, yes.

But the similarities didn't end there; the color scheme of the GBC can design — yellow, green and red — also resembled the colors of the Masters logo, which features a green outline of the U.S. map with a red golf flag coming out of the hole where Augusta is marked on the map. Georgia Beer Company's flag, meanwhile, was also red, but positioned at the bottom of the can, and they used the green color much more prominently in the lettering of their logo and the words "GOLF BEER" at the bottom.

But for months after the cans were released, Georgia Beer Company heard nothing about any issues with their design. They had even hoped maybe The Masters would embrace the beer and reach out to them to add it to its Augusta National lineup. Well, The Masters reached out alright — but the correspondence wasn't exactly cordial.

Letter from The Masters

The three-page cease and desist letter arrived sometime in late 2022 from The Masters' lawyers, and it pointed out in great detail — including photographic examples — what The Masters felt like was an infringement on their intellectual property.

"My initial reaction was a little contradictory. On the one hand, I was (really mad)!" Jones said. "However I was also kind of flattered that The Masters had heard of Georgia Beer Co. and thought our product was substantial enough that they needed to challenge it."

GBC immediately brought the letter to their legal team at Atlanta law firm Taylor Fiel which represented the Georgia Brewers Guild and worked closely with breweries on legal issues throughout the state. But this one was different than most that came across their desk.

Their advice?

"Their advice was that technically we weren’t in the wrong, but we couldn’t afford a legal fight like this with an entity as big as The Masters," Jones said. "They advised quick mediation. So we stopped selling the hats and we changed the color scheme of the can. We then responded to the letter and the design was approved by Augusta National’s lawyers."

Jones and Martin briefly pondered responding to The Masters and asking if they would possibly consider a partnership with GBC and the beer, but ultimately decided The Masters had probably already considered that and had made its decision when they sent the letter.

But one can't help but wonder if a big, public legal fight wouldn't have made the beer and brand a household name — or just resulted in a big public L in court and legal fees galore. To be honest, both could've happened. And if Georgia Beer Company lost the battle in court, they very easily could've also had to pay The Masters residual earnings from the sale of the beer already.

"I think there were a lot technicalities where we would've had a good case. But we just wanted to keep the beer around for folks to enjoy and sell the cans we still had — not lose it all over something like this," Martin said. "But I do think we had a strong argument that we were within our rights to make that can."

Back Nine is back at The Hub at Feather Oaks

Once The Masters agreed that the new label change was good to go, Georgia Beer Company re-launched the beer into the market, including Tallahassee. And they're even holding a golf-themed event at The Hub At Feather Oaks on Thursday, April 11, centered around Back Nine and other GBC beers.

So at the end of the day, GBC lost to The Masters — but it continues to win with Back Nine and its popularity.

"I personally think we were in the right, but it wasn’t worth the fight," Martin said. "Plus, how many breweries have beer cans in the market right now that they can say have officially been approved of by The Masters?"

As for that C&D letter and how it's now worn like a badge of honor? Both Jones and Martin said it's hard to miss when you're in the tasting room.

"We get asked and even complimented on it sometimes," Martin said. "Makes for a good story, but we're more glad we still get to share this beer with our fans. Because it's a winner."

Conjoined Twins Lori and George Schappell, Who Defied the Odds Since Birth, Dead at 62

Conjoined twins who set a world record as the oldest with the rare phenomenon, and who were the first to identify as different genders, have died at the age of 62.

Lori and George Schappell died at a hospital in Pennsylvania on April 7, according to their obituary . The craniopagus twins—joined at the head—shared 30 percent of their brains, but led drastically different careers and interests.

“Dori had a career as a country singer, performing throughout the United States; and Lori is a trophy-winning bowler,” their obituary notes.

“I don’t wake up thinking, ‘Oh, I’m a conjoined twin.’ I have two arms and two legs. I’m just a regular person… I live a normal life,” Lori told the Los Angeles Times in a 2002 interview.

The pair was given only a year to live by doctors when they were born in 1961, but they managed to defy the odds and live independently in their own apartment, with Lori pushing George, who had spina bifida, around in a wheelchair.

With no surgery available at the time to separate the two, the twins were given a flurry of dire prognoses and doctors ultimately convinced their parents to put them in an institution for more than two decades. But they chose to always look forward, and paved their own paths throughout adulthood.

In 2007, George famously announced his decision to transition, making them the world’s first conjoined twins to identify as different genders. They had different rooms in their Pennsylvania apartment and switched up their sleeping arrangements each night, showering at different times and learning to “ignore each other” when they weren’t getting along or the situation demanded it, Lori noted in the 2002 interview.

“Normal is whatever you make of it, but we’re very happy,” she said.
