Tab group titles disappeared from Safari window menu

It was so useful to have the list of open windows in Safari include the tab group name (if there was one) appear before the site name, as in tabgroup: site. I could bring up the tab group with ease and jump to another tab in the group without remembering which site was currently open. That feature has disappeared since I upgraded to latest Safari, and I can't see any setting to bring it back. I really want to have it back the way it was.

This is an extremely important feature and I was aghast when I came across this thread to discover that it wasn't simply a case of my not being able to find out how to turn on the feature.

Apple, listen up please! When you introduced the tabs feature and then tab groups, most people who use them keep multiple windows open that contain quite a number of open tabs - dozens, if not more. For such people, these tab group windows with lots of open tabs are often used INSTEAD of the bookmark folder and feel much more useful, because the tabs are right there in front of you instead of hidden away in folders that you never remember to go to and scroll through.

Before Sonoma, when you wanted to find a particular tab group among all of your open windows, the easiest way to do it was to click on the "Window" tab in the Safari menu bar where the list of all open tab group windows were prepended with the tab group name. Without that, you are simply looking at a list of random single webpage titles that you may or may not be able to discern what they are by the description you see listed. It's a HUGE waste of time and energy having to click on each one until you find the correct tab group window you are looking for.

This is clearly a bug as it hinders productivity and efficiency instead of the contrary.

I just want to be able to have what I had before. If there's still a way to get it, I'd like instructions on how. I have already looked at the documentation without finding what I want. Can someone tell me whether the feature has been snuffed out? If it hasn't, how do I turn it back on?

I want this feature back as well. For a time I could see the tab group pre-pended to the name of the window. Now I can't tell which window has a tab group opened. Please at least make this a setting I can turn back on.

Disappearing Safari Tabs on iPhone or iPad? How to Find Them

Every so often, a seemingly small bug in Apple's operating systems survives the company's annual OS launches and continues to cause users huge frustration from one software update to the next.

apple macos bigsur safari improvedtabs 06222020

While there isn't an accepted solution to the problem of disappearing tabs, there are cases where it might seem that your tabs are gone, when in fact they are just hidden from view. Here are some ways that you may be able to get them back or stop them from disappearing in the first place.

Reveal Hidden Tabs

On iPadOS, for example, if you press and hold the Show Tab Overview button (four squares in a quadrant) in the top-right corner of the Safari window, this will reveal a dropdown menu that includes an option to Merge All Windows .

safari

Reveal the Shelf

Another action worth trying on iPadOS is pressing and holding the Safari icon in the Dock or on the Home Screen and selecting Show All Windows from the popup menu that appears.

Recently Closed Tabs

If you have an inkling that some of the tabs you're missing have been inadvertently closed, you can always use the Recently Closed Tabs option to re-open them. All you have to do is open up the tab view in Safari and long press on the "+" icon to get a look at all of the tabs that you've recently closed.

Turn Off Auto-Close Tabs

If you still haven't been able to find some of your tabs, make sure that Safari isn't closing them after a certain duration on your behalf: Open Settings , tap through to Safari -> Close Tabs and ensure that Manually is selected.

safari tabs

Bookmark All Open Tabs

If the above suggestions haven't worked for you, there is a workaround: Consider bookmarking your open tabs after each browsing session. This might sound like more hassle than it's worth, but since iOS 13 Apple has included a one-tap option to just that.

safari tabs

A popup menu will appear at the on the screen from which you can select Add Bookmarks for X Tabs , the X being the number of tabs open.

Once you've tapped this option, you'll be asked to save the tabs in a new bookmarks folder (remember to give it a recognizable name). Alternately, you can choose a location from the existing folder list in which to save the tabs.

safari

To access your bookmarks in Safari at any time, simply tap the Bookmarks icon in the main browsing interface or the sidebar to reveal all of your saved favorites and folders. Press and hold on the folder of bookmarks and select Open in New Tabs , or alternatively, Open in Tab Group if you want them grouped.

If you’re using Safari but you’re not using Tab Groups, well, it’s time to change that.

Tab Groups, as the name implies, allows you to group a selection of tabs together and essentially set them aside for future use. For example, if you have a bunch of tabs you use for work and a bunch of tabs you use after work, you can cordon these tabs off into batches so that they don’t get in each other’s way. You can use your work tabs at work and, when you’re finished, swap them for your “after work” tabs with just one click.

  • How to use Microsoft Edge’s new tab groups feature

You might also have different Tab Groups for different assignments at work or different school projects. Folks who share a computer might have different Tab Groups for each user. The possibilities are endless.

Here’s how to create a tab group in Safari.

How to create Safari Tab Groups on macOS

There are a couple of ways to do this. The easiest method is to make a group out of whatever tabs you currently have open. If you’re about to close Safari but think you might need to pick up where you left off when you open it later, throwing your tabs into a group can give you some peace of mind.

You can also create a tab group from scratch if there is a batch of tabs you think you might want to use later. This is a bit more time-consuming but will allow you to be more selective about which tabs to include.

A screenshot of Safari on macOS with New Tab Group with 2 Tabs selected.

To create a tab group from existing tabs

  • In Safari, click the down arrow in the toolbar. (It’s on the left side, next to the button that opens the sidebar.)
  • Pick New Tab Group With [X] Tabs .
  • In the left column, look for the Tab Group subhead. Name your tab group, then press Enter.

A screenshot of Safari on macOS with a tab selected and Move to Tab Group highlighted.

To create a tab group from scratch

  • Click the down arrow in the toolbar. (It’s next to the button that opens the sidebar.)
  • Pick New Empty Tab Group .
  • Name your tab group, then press enter.
  • Right-click a tab you want to add to the group, click Move to Tab Group , and select the tab group you want. Alternatively, you can click and drag the tab to your group on the left side.

To open your new tab group

  • Click on that down arrow again.
  • Click on the tab group you want.

Once you’ve got a group up and running, it’s not set in stone. You can adjust the makeup of a given tab group by clicking the arrow to its right in the sidebar’s tab group list. Right-click any tab that comes up, and you’ll have the option to remove it from the group, remove all tabs that aren’t it from the group, or move it to a different group,

You can also click the three dots just next to the arrow if you want to rename, delete, or share the group, along with other options.

How to create Safari Tab Groups on iOS

Tab Groups can sync between iOS and macOS devices, so if you create one on your Mac computer, you can still access it on your iPhone. Nevertheless, if it’s more convenient for you to create these from the Safari app on iOS, you can certainly do so.

A screenshot of Safari on iOS with a tab long-pressed and Move to Tab Group selected.

  • In the Safari app, click the tabs button on the bottom right. (It’s the one with two squares.)
  • Press and hold a tab you want to add, then pick Move to Tab Group .
  • Select New Tab Group .
  • Name your new group.

How to Use Safari Tab Groups in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15

Learn how to collect your open tabs into different folders with Tab Groups in Safari on an iPhone or iPad.

Apple gave Safari a much-needed visual overhaul with the iOS 15 software update. However, the changes aren't purely aesthetic; the new Tab Groups feature can potentially change how you organize tabs during your browsing session.

Organizing several tabs is no easy task on mobile devices, where you can't simply open another Safari window as you would on a Mac. Tab Groups lets you clump relevant tabs together and switch between them whenever you need to. If you're interested in adding Tab Groups to your workflow, here's a look at how to use Tab Groups on an iPhone or iPad.

What Are Tab Groups?

Before we learn how to use Tab Groups, it's important to understand what they are. In the simplest terms, a Tab Group is a folder of tabs.

You can group tabs and label them with a custom name to easily see what those tabs are for. For example, let's say you have multiple web pages open that are relevant to your work, but you want to browse casually at the same time. Instead of cluttering Safari's tab bar, you can group the tabs into a separate Tab Group and switch between personal sites and work sites at your convenience.

It's a feature that most web browsers already have, but it's finally making its way to Safari. Tab Groups will sync across your Apple devices, so you won't lose all your precious tabs when switching from your iPhone to your Mac.

How to Use Safari Tab Groups on an iPhone or iPad

You can create, view, and manage your Tab Groups from the tab overview screen in Safari. As long as your device is running iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or later, just follow these simple instructions to use Safari Tab Groups:

  • Launch Safari on your iPhone or iPad and tap on the Tabs button at the corner of your screen.
  • Now, you'll see the current Tab Group. Right below, you'll find the option to make a New Empty Tab Group . Alternatively, you can create a Tab Group from all your open tabs. Select your desired option.
  • Next, give a preferred name for your new Tab Group and choose Save .
  • Safari will switch you to this new Tab Group. You can switch between your Tab Groups from the tabs overview screen.

Once you have Tab Groups set up, it's pretty easy to manage your tabs. You can long-press on a tab from the tab overview to move it to a different Tab Group.

By default, Safari considers all the tabs you've opened as an unnamed Tab Group. To browse in Private, you now need to switch to the Private Tab Group. Don't forget that you can access all your new Tab Groups on your other devices as well, provided you've logged in to them with your Apple account. Also, if you have a Mac, make sure it's running macOS Monterey to use Safari's Tab Groups.

Tab Groups Are an Integral Part of the New Safari

The revamped Safari will change how you interact with the browser. For starters, Apple has moved the address bar to the bottom, which may take some time getting used to, and Tab Groups give you an all-new way to save and organize all your browsing tabs.

Besides this valuable addition, Safari also gets extension support with the iOS 15 update. You can now install third-party extensions to enhance your browsing experience with content blockers, password managers, and whatnot.

Organise your browser tabs into groups to improve your workflow and productivity

Safari Group Tabs

Tools and Requirements

Step by step guide, final thoughts.

Back in 2003, it was almost unthinkable that Apple would bring out its own web browser, as it was a time when Internet Explorer on Mac was the best choice. However, twenty years on and Safari has become the web browser to go to when you load up macOS.

Features such as iCloud tabs enable you to open one window on your iPhone for example and load it up on your Mac. Apple is constantly bringing out new features involving tabs, such as Tab Groups in macOS Monterey.

These enable you to group up a bunch of sites in tabs, and you can also share them with friends and family. With macOS Ventura , there are even more options available that will help to boost your browsing management - with this in mind, here are a few steps on how best to use tab groups in Safari.

  • macOS Ventura

1. Create a tab group from current tabs

Safari Group Tabs

You can create tab groups using tabs you already have open, or create an empty group and add tabs as required; we'll look at the first option first. Open the Safari sidebar and click the New Tab Group button -- this features two squares and a + symbol.

Select the New Tab Group With x Tabs option ( x will be replaced with the number of tabs you have open. Type a name for your tab group and press Enter .

2. Create a tab group with a selection of tabs

Safari Group Tabs

Of course, you may not want to add all of your open tabs to a group, preferring instead to create a group from just a few of them. Make sure that you not only have the Safari sidebar open, but also that the list of open tabs is visible -- just click the > button to expand the list.

Select the tabs you want to transform into a tab group by clicking then while holding Command . Click the ... button next to the first tab you selected, and click Move to Tab Group > New Tab Group before typing a name and pressing Enter .

3. Adding tabs to existing groups

Safari Group Tabs

When you have created groups, it is easy to open new tabs within that group and those sites will automatically be part of that group. But you may also want to move a tab that isn't in a group into an existing group or even move a tab from one group to another.

Hold Control while clicking a tab in the Safari sidebar -- or tap with two fingers -- and select Move to Tab Group before clicking the name of the tab group you want to move it to.

4. Sharing tab groups

Safari Group Tabs

If you are using a tab group to research potential hotels to use for your next trip, to check out different holiday destinations, or even for a work project, you may want to share a collection of tabs with someone else.

Hover over the title of a tab group in the sidebar, and click the ... button. From the menu that pops into view, select Share Tab Group and then choose the Messages option before searching for a contact and sending them an invitation.

5. Pinning within tab groups

Safari Group Tabs

You are very likely familiar with the idea of pinning tabs in Safari so that you can not only easily access your most frequently used sites, but also reduce the size of the tabs in question.

It's also possible to pin tabs within tab groups, helping to keep things neatly organized. It works in the same way as normal pinning. Within a tab group, Command -click a tab or tab with two fingers and select the Pin Tab option. When pinned, you cannot move a tab to another group until you unpin it.

6. Moving tabs between tab groups

Safari Group Tabs

If you have two or more tab groups on the go at the same time, it is all too easy to open a new tab within the wrong group. Thankfully, it is very easy to move tabs between groups. You simply need to Command -click / tap with two fingers on a tab beneath the address bar, or in entry for a tab in the sidebar. Form the menu that appears, select the Move to Tab Group option followed by the name of the group you want to move it to.

7. Using Tabs Groups with a Focus

Safari Group Tabs

If you have different tab groups configured for work and home projects, you can use them in conjunction with macOS Ventura's Focus feature. Click the Apple menu, select System Settings and move to the Focus section.

Select or create a focus and then click the Add Filter button in the Focus Filter section. Click the Safari / Set Tab Group option, click Choose then select the tab group you want to link to the chosen Focus. Click Add , and you're done.

8. Customizing Tab Groups

Safari Group Tabs

You can easily change the order in which tabs appear in a group by dragging and dropping them into your preferred positions. It is also possible to customize the start page of a tab group by selecting an appropriate background image.

Select a tab group in the sidebar in Safari, click the Bookmarks menu and select Show Start Page . Click the Options button on the lower-right of the screen and you can then choose between one of the built-in images, or select one of our own.

There is a lot to love about Tab Groups in Safari, but the feature is not the only way you can keep on top of tabs in Apple's desktop web browser. You could consider switching to a different browser, of course -- the likes of Firefox and Chrome offer their own individual methods of tab management. But if you would prefer to stick with Safari, there are some extensions that can help you out.

The first extension that's worth taking a look at is Tab Space . Although not free, it is incredibly cheap and gives you great options such as the ability to tag tab sessions, and then open them in the future with a single click. Also noteworthy is OneTab , a free Safari extension that lets you convert a number of tabs into a list which can then be re-opened individually or as a group.

Hi, this doesn't seem to work for me. Is there any other option?

Open history/recently closed tabs and right click a selection of tabs that you recently closed. Chose open in new window, and voila; there are your tab groups

Whenever I use this hotkeys combination, it jumps tp the True Key tab & this combination opens True Key even if it is not open.

this would've been really great if yall had told me this when you were announcing the new tab group feature (or at least it was presented as such one day after i restarted computer). i spent about an hour setting up about 8 tab groupss with all the tabs i wanted in each group. today when i went to get some work done, they're all gone!!! no wonder i hate reading about any of the snazzy new featues you're giving us with each upgrade of edge!!! as someone who's used computers since 1985 (ok, originally a wang in 1980), computers were a LOT easier when they didn't try to be "user-friendly" !!!

Sorry for your trouble. On those occasions I seem to lose my tabs, I close the browser completely and find the tabs in the browser history.

Thanks! It worked

I had faced a similar situation recently. Accidentally, I found the solution. I pressed CTRL+H to open the browsing history. I saw all the tab groups. Accidentally, I clicked on one tab group (the white triangle icon). It jumped to the left sidebar. I was excited. Then, I clicked all other tab groups icons & restored my tab groups. I'm very much enjoying the tab group feature.

Dear Microsoft. Please show us users that you recognise this missing piece of the Edge Browser is a painful problem, and give us some sort of roadmap to fix this critical function? Just to summarize:

1. Tab Groups is promoted as a way to use, save resources, and to save groups of tabs.

2. The function works VERY well, until something happens, like a Forced-hard-reset.

3. It works so well that we users begin to depend upon it for our NEW work-flow.

4. When the event happens, ALL Group info is lost. <<<You may be saying to yourself, "No it isn't!" But it is, and this is why:

5. We believed we could close a Tab without losing anything and THUS, we might not go into that GROUP, much less the tabs, for a LONG time. We certainly do not memorize the contents of the GROUPS!

So, even if some of the more recent tabs show up in history, (mine do not, at least from my update-hard-reset from last Wednsday. 1 week.) it is practically impossible to piece together what goes where, and what GROUP it was in.

This is a MAJOR issue for me, and erodes trust in the browser, and the functions as you roll them out.

Please address this ASAP.

"Some pet classes will have their pet action bar missing after relogging." this was reported countless times, and yet it still went live.

This is literally a beta release, damn.

Cant race change to a tauren on horde either using race change RIP

"Some pet classes will have their pet action bar missing after relogging." this was reported countless times, and yet it still went live. I'm guessing that pet Growl probably still doesn't have a taunt and as soon as the player uses the skill, the mob immediately attacks the player instead of the pet, because the aggro generated by the player increases to 160%. It was like that in the last build, so they probably didn't do anything about it

Comment by minmin01

Literally releasing an unfinished buggy mess. Classic dev team is shotgunning L after L between this and SoD.

Race Changes are broken for Horde Druids "You have no valid races to change into".

Comment by Gadd

People saying this is a beta release. No. No it's not. It's actually a beta release of a game they've already released 14 years ago. God I'm old.

Comment by Koorban

Biggest beta release right now, the entire community even stated the beta was in no way release candidate. Achievements are buggggggggy as hell. Do not work. Pets arent sent to you in the mail from achievements.

Comment by CognateClockwork

It was a $%^&show obviously

Comment by Qwevin

This is so dumb actually makes me not wanting to play cata. Fix your game Blizzard....

Comment by Roadblock

I made this for the beta few days back (while reporting the guild chat issue after every build), but here we are .. Guild To Chat

Comment by Kedy97

Well it's not like there are private servers of Cataclysm with x10 better scripting of the game.. oh and they are for free

Comment by Turalys

Hunters haste rating isn't working properly as well. I went from 25%-33% haste and my focus regen never budged. I know it's supposed to be affected by haste rating, and it makes it to where you are the slowest, clunkiest class for running anything.

Comment by Rdmaster

Well it's not like there are private servers of Cataclysm with x10 better scripting of the game.. oh and they are for free This shouldn't have happened, but with all due respect, they're shifting WDB (a notoriously jank Cata-WoD structure) to DB2. They aren't emulating (ala pserv) they're translating. The pserv point isn't as gotcha as you think, it's a nothingburger. Tldr; DB2 is current modern data structure e.g. You can run Classic Vanilla with a Dragonflight client due to the data shift.

Comment by Ortuus

This is literally a beta release, damn. yeah but we can't do dungeons :<

Comment by Gigaovgodd

Transmog is NOT account wide, not yet at least. Edit: U just have to log all ur characters first then try transmogging!

Comment by Evermeet

Can we get our guild leveling back? Kinda removed some of the incentive to join and participate in guild activities.

Comment by Goati

Cant confirm but a number of other bugs ive encountered are: -Not being able to leave RDF instances once completed. Have to use command /script LeaveParty() -Stat window not saving when you define what to show and minimize -Totem stats not showing under stat window or even appearing as a buff Only played for about 30 mins so i'm sure there are many many more issues. Big lol! Ty blizzy xD!

Comment by daddynko

There are literally some spells missing, for example druid mangle

Comment by Marvid385

Profession icons are not showing, action bars are hidden almost always even after toggling them on hundreds of times already... The game was fine yesterday and now it feels like an alpha build even though this expansion is more than a decade old!
