Moroccan Desert Adventure: River Canyons & Camels

It was an unforgettable tour and the amount of things we could see and do in only one week was unbelievable. Even though we spent a big part of the time driving, there were enough stops in between and I also got this strange feeling that time was passing more slowly on this trip, simply because we experienced so much. In the car, we could watch the scenery from the windows and people when driving through towns and villages. We could also take naps in the car, all in all it was a relaxing trip despite being full of adventure as well. Karim was a great guide, not least due to his humor and smiling. I also saw that he was good at dealing with different people within our group. He seemed to know almost everyone personally wherever we went, chatting briefly with people on our way. A few negatives though, a tiny part of the overall experience. We stopped 2-3 times shops for traditional handicraft (e.g. pottery) which I disliked as I'm not into shopping and found these stops too commercial. A stop at a place for making argan oil products was also too sales driven for my taste although I thought it was interesting to hear about the production process. Some of the women on the group bought something there, so they probably had a more positive view. There was also one stop at the end of the 4x4 excursion in the desert to listen to local music, which I think nobody particularly enjoyed. If you are going to Morocco for the first time, I would highly recommend this tour.

Our trip was an absolute delight, all thanks to our fantastic guide, Mohamed. He went beyond just guiding us, becoming a true friend and sharing his wealth of knowledge. The desert night was the pinnacle of our adventure. And don't miss the extra activities like quad biking, hiking, and hot air ballooning - they're a must! A huge shoutout to Touareg Trails for this unforgettable experience.

An absolutely great tour. It was perfectly organized. The landscape was beautiful. Even if it was very hot in August when we did the tour, the daily walking time was good. No day was too hard. The summit of M'Goun ist wonderful as well as the other day tours and campsites. Trek in Morocco and our guide left no question from us unanswered, the answering time via tourradar was very quick. Also the flexibility to shift the start of the tour (pick up in Marrakech) by 4 hours was absolutely great. Thank you to the Team of Trek in Morocco, to Hassan, our very professional and experienced guide and to the rest of the team who went with us! We had a great time with you guys and will definitely book again a tour with you!

Trekking in Morocco: Erg Chigaga Trek - 8 Days Tour

Trekking in Morocco: Erg Chigaga Trek - 8 Days

We never imagined we would have a wonderful 8-day Erg Chigaga trek. Maybe because we hadn’t rode on camels before. Even worse we always feared imagining riding on a camel to access anywhere. But when the thought of the most classic and memorable places—Erg Chigaga—came to my mind, I was ready to do anything to see this exciting landscape. This stunning sand dune sea is located in the Sahara desert—and being the first time, I was amazed to take pictures to show off to my family back at home. All in all, we had an incredible experience and we will get to do this again with View Morocco.

Our tour with Amanar was fantastic! He was an amazing guide and shared so much about the Moroccan culture, traditions and people throughout our travels. Although the driving time was quite long, we were able to view so much of the countryside and stop to take pictures whenever we wanted. The scheduled tour stops were beautiful and Amanar would tell us where to get the best pictures or give us some background on its history. The riad and desert camp were also fabulous - very clean, well decorated and both had delicious meals.

I could write an essay on this amazing 6-Day Camel Trekking Morocco Erg Zahar experience with the Desertbrise team but I will try to keep it short(ish). This was an excellently organized tour, everything that was promised was delivered and MORE! Nothing was ever too much trouble and the favorite saying of our guide was: "Just relax, don't think and enjoy." We were able to do that because we were in very capable hands. We ended up being the only two travelers on the tour along with a guide, a cook/camel master in one person, a musician and two camels to carry all our gear and camping supplies. Due to the nature of the tour we actually really enjoyed not having other people there. The desert is a magical place that is better enjoyed in the company of a few. Our guide pushed us exactly the needed amount - we felt like we deserved our rest at camp every day. He did say that they monitor the walking capabilities of each traveler on the first day and adjust accordingly. I concur. Our feet ached but our hearts sang. :D I would recommend hiking sandals (we learned the hard way as our shoes were not up to par) as the desert scenery changed quite a lot. We felt like we walked through many different deserts, not just a small part of the Moroccan Sahara. The drive there and back is long, but it didn't feel so as the scenery changed every 40 min and there is a visit to a Kasbah and a break for lunch too. We were there in April and the weather was warm during the day and chilly in the mornings and after sunset. A light down jacket was enough to keep me warm (I get cold easily) and 2-3 blankets at night that were provided by the tour. The few things I enjoyed having with me were wet wipes (so that you can "wash" at the end of the day - you will be sandy!), hand sanitizer and a headlamp. If you want to make your camping team very happy, bring some chocolate along to share by the campfire. ;) The care, hospitality and authenticity was the best we experienced in our time in Morocco. And the food at camp really was the best we had at any restaurant in Marrakech! Our cook took great care to always wash his hands and he used bottled water and vinegar to clean all the veggies. Ok, the review ended up not being short, but I cannot praise the Desertbrise team highly enough. THANK YOU for an unforgettable adventure after I thought that I have seen and done so much that nothing could impress anymore.

I loved the time that I spent with Mbark and Boujamaa. We spent a nurturing time together in the silence of the desert. I can definetively recommend to attend to that trip. I just give four stars, because it's said in the description, that there will be a nomadic guide, what wasn't the case in the and. I've really looked forward to spent a couple of days with a nomad. It would be just more fair to write it into the description, as it is. Nevertheless it's been a wonderful time. Thank you so much Mbark, Boujamaa and Khalil.

Morocco Sahara desert trekking tour – 7 days

sahara trekking tours

Morocco Sahara desert trekking – overview:

This exclusive 7-day Sahara Desert trekking tour is the ultimate desert experience. It is unquestionably the trek of a lifetime and one that will stay in your thoughts forever.

Your camel desert trek will last three days and three nights, crossing different features of the great Sahara Desert; “erg” sand dunes, “hammada” flat ground, and oases. Each stage is about three hours in the morning and again in the afternoon. You camp out in the middle of the desert under the stars for the first two trekking nights.

All your meals and the camp will be prepared by your camel-men each day.

This trip also offers an opportunity to experience local Berber culture and life-styles: Kasbahs, a pottery, a Qoranic library, carpet and rug making. You may also pass nomadic camps in the desert.

The ancient geological development of the area can be discovered when looking for fossils at Lake Iriqui and in the mountain and rocky landscapes en route.

Desert trek in erg chegaga – itinerary:, 1st day: marrakech – agdez.

The tour starts with a departure at 8.30 from your riad in Marrakech to cross the High Atlas Mountains . After reaching the highest point in the road, you will drive into the mountains to visit Kasbah Telouet. This very famous Kasbah was the property of the Lords of the Atlas, the Glaoui family. However as the last head of the family plotted against the then King, Mohamed V, the Kasbah was confiscated from him.  The local population took the opportunity to plunder it and all three main buildings built over the centuries have now been left to the vagaries of the elements.

Sadly, the entire Kasbah is presently closed due to the destruction caused by the earthquake that hit Morocco in September 2023.  Nonetheless, you can still enjoy the exterior with a local guide to uncover its fascinating history.

At the end of the long, winding  Ounila Valley , leading south and where Berber life-styles are very evident, you reach Aït ben Haddou, the most famous Kasbah in Morocco.  It is also one of Morocco’s nine  UNESCO World Heritage sites and has frequently acted as a backdrop to many a Hollywood film. It probably dates back to the 17th century and the architectural style is well preserved.  The earthen constructions are perfectly adapted to local climatic conditions, and are in complete harmony with the natural and social environment.

Having crossed the Anti-Atlas south of Ouarzazate , you come to the head of the Dra’a Valley. One astonishing feature of this valley is the thousands of date palms, producing an amazing 44 varieties of dates.  The date harvest starts in September and lasts a couple of months, so if you are travelling in this period, you will be able to purchase the freshest one here in the souk.

2nd day: Agdez – M’hamid

A short way south of Agdez is Kasbah Tamnougalte , the oldest Kasbah in the Dra’a Valley.  From here the road passes innumerable villages set on the edge of the oases.  So a clear picture of ancient and modern rural Berber is gained as you travel down towards the desert.

In  Zagora , we stop for lunch and just south of there, you come to a small town called Tamgroute. The local potteries work differently from those you may know in the west, so make an interesting visit.  The Qoranic library nearby is full of exquisite manuscripts to admire.

Later you continue to M’hamid , the gate to the desert, whilst your excitement will surely mount with the landscapes increasingly showing signs of a desert landscape. You can enjoy the sunset from the top of the dunes close to the camp.

You have dinner and spend the night at a comfortable camp with a private bathroom, king-sized beds, beautiful Moroccan furnishings, and lamps tastefully arranged to enhance your enjoyment of the silence and beauty of the dunes.

3rd, 4th, and 5th days: Camel trekking the Sahara desert

You will trek by dromedary for three days and three nights to discover the most beautiful desert of Morocco and its vast dunes with its varying features of  ‘erg’, ‘hammada’, and oases. On the afternoon of the fifth day, you will reach the famous Chegaga Dunes.   Tonight’s dinner and night will be at an authentic Berber camp with tents and bathroom facilities.

Walking time each day is approximately five hours a day (two and a half hours in the morning, and the same again in the afternoon), although it is also possible to ride the camels. Other camels are there to carry the equipment. Your meals and the tents are prepared by our guides and camel drivers.

6th day: Erg Chegaga – Ouarzazate

After breakfast, you will drive west across further desert areas, including the now dried-up Lake Iriqui . In the middle of this lake, you are quite likely to experience a mirage shimmering over its flat surface. But unless it has been raining hard, which is rare, and which anyway would mean you could not cross the mud, that “water” is not in fact real. On the edge of the lake, you may enjoy casting around for fossils: some lie loosely around but most are firmly fixed into the rock.

At the edge of the desert you reach Foum Zguid , from where you drive north to Taznakht. This small Berber town is famous for its Berber rugs and carpets,. You will have lunch here and later turn back east again to return to Ouarzazate at the end of the afternoon.

7th day: Ouarzazate – Marrakech

After breakfast, you will be able to visit the cinema studios  of Hollywood fame and also  Kasbah Taourirt, which also used to belong to the Glaoui family.  Driving north, you again cross the Tizi-n-Tichka pass to Marrakech, which you reach at the end of the afternoon. Your Morocco desert trek comes to an end as your driver escorts you to your hotel in Marrakech.

Hike the Sahara

Hiking the Sahara Desert is like nowhere else, and the desert truly makes for a slow travel experience. Desert hiking offers a real sense of space and remoteness, especially when witnessed from the tops of the vast dune fields.

Sahara Desert Hiking – defining slow travel

Our indicative hiking programs run from 3 days and upwards, with remote routes and wilderness camping in the unspoilt ‘ Iriqui National Park ‘. You are unlikely to encounter many other people, except perhaps nomadic families or the occasional shepherd.

Sleeping under the stars and being entertained with music at the campfire is a luxury of desert life. You will see the staple of every meal, bread, baked fresh in the hot sand beneath the coals of the campfire and indulge in many glasses of strong Moroccan tea. Nothing is rushed in the desert.

Erg Chigaga great dunes sit alongside the course of the Draa River valley, at this point underground, and which we follow at stages. The dunes, or dune sea (“erg”), reach 300ft in height and span approx. 40km. There are other expanses of dunes on our trekking routes (such as Erg Zahar dunes and Erg Sedrar dunes) which offer equally unique Sahara Desert landscapes.

The terrain of the Sahara Desert is shaped by wind, sometimes rain, and includes not only sand dunes, but also hamada, dry valleys & lakes and salt flats. You may also be surprised at seeing so much vegetation in the desert, including Tamarisk and Acacia trees and palms. Winter is a green time of year here after seasonal rains, and January/February see the arrival of newborn camels – their mothers out to pasture.

  • Trekking time each day is approx. 5-6 hours with plenty of rest stops and a long lunch break in shade
  • All tours are full board basis with overnight in 2-person bivouac tents
  • Please specify at time of booking if you prefer to ride by camel for the duration of the tour, as opposed to walking (*extra cost)
  • Please allow one day for travel to reach the desert frontier from the start point, and one day to return
  • Hiking tours in the Sahara desert run from October through April

We will likely stop to meet nomadic families that still live in the region and come across other evidence of human existence here; including the abandoned settlement and agricultural land of Erg Smar close to the Draa River bed (where once approx. 35 families lived), a nomads’ cemetery, nomads’ former souk, a marabout (shrine of a holy man), deep wells, and grazing land for animals still used today.

What to pack

In my time as a guidebook author and journalist I've covered everything from trekking in Morocco , to food tours of mediaeval Fez, to designer shopping in Marrakech. I’ve scaled Morocco’s High Atlas peaks , surfed its wild Atlantic coastline and rafted the Middle Atlas rapids.

But for me, trekking – on foot or by camel, or a mix of both – in the Sahara is to explore one of Morocco’s most fascinating – and misunderstood – regions.

Rocky desert stretches down through long-dry river valleys scattered with crumbling earthen kasbahs, through ancient oasis towns and lush palm groves, to the wind-sculpted sands of the Sahara, one of the most beguiling places I’ve ever visited and one of the few places you can truly disconnect.

These are the routes of age-old caravans when hundreds of people and thousands of camels spent months oasis-hopping as they transported gold, salt and slaves from sub-Saharan Africa, across the desert to Marrakech and Fez, leaving behind a desert-crossroads culture.

Few visitors to Morocco make it this far, and those that do tend to opt for one or two nights in a desert campsite. But, if you have the time and inclination for something more adventurous, I can highly recommend the overnight wild camping camel treks led by Amazigh (Berber) guides. You’ll trek by camel and on foot over sky-high dunes, across hamada (lunar-like stony plateaus) and among desert scrub to Erg Chigaga, or the even more remote Erg Zahar, like the nomadic tribes of old.

Sounds good, doesn’t it? Read on for my expert guide to trekking in Morocco’s Sahara desert.

The best Sahara treks

Our expert's top picks.

The definition of a trekking “route” gets pretty loose in the Sahara, with each operator running their own preferred itineraries with a variety of distances, durations, and accommodations. But you’ll likely find some format of the following routes offered by Sahara trekking specialists. I can recommend them all, but if pushed for a favourite I’d probably vote for Erg Chigaga.

  • Best hike for: seeing the Sahara without the crowds
  • Difficulty: Mild
  • Trek duration: Four days
  • Accommodation: Wild camping
  • Start / end point: Mhamid

One of my favourite trekking destinations in the Sahara is the vast Iriqui National Park, the only national park in the Moroccan Sahara. The park was established 30 years ago but is not well publicised or well known to visitors, making it a real hidden gem.

My preferred route is a four day hike from Mhamid following the Draa Valley via the dune regions of Erg Zahar, Erg Sedrar and Erg Chigaga before reaching Iriqui. Wild mobile camps means we can set up away from the crowds, and you can either trek by foot or by camel.

You might be surprised by the amount of wildlife in Iriqui, although it is elusive and often nocturnal. Some desert species, such as the addax anteolope, have been reintroduced, while others appear to be increasing in numbers, such as the endangered Dorcas gazelle. It's also a great place for bird watching, depending on the time of year.

Erg Chigaga trek

  • Distance: Approx. 57 kilometres
  • Duration: Three or four days, around 3-6 hours trekking per day
  • Start: M’hamid
  • End: Erg Chigaga dunes

If you’re looking for something a bit more adventurous than a basic overnight desert camp, I can highly recommend trekking on foot – your luggage and supplies travel by camel – to the Erg Chigaga dunes. Itineraries vary depending on the operator, but it’s typically three or four days with at least one night wild camping at the dunes themselves. Good operators make the camps a surprisingly comfortable and well-catered experience. The standard route starts at M’hamid and follows the course of the now-dry Draa River, the longest in Morocco, passing abandoned settlements and on to the famous Erg Chigaga dunes themselves. Most itineraries return to M’hamid by 4x4 rather than trekking all the way back again!

Erg Zahar trek

Erg Zahar trek

  • Distance: Approx. 75 kilometres
  • Duration: Four days, around four to six hours trekking per day
  • End: M’hamid

Another intrepid trek I can recommend is to Erg Zahar. Dubbed the ‘screaming dunes’ after a grisly local legend, they’re even more remote than Erg Chigaga. It’s a four-day trek on foot with wild camping around a variety of desert landscapes. The circular route to the rolling dunes starts from M’hamid, following the Draa River, passing through a lush palm oasis dotted with crumbling mud-brick buildings, crossing stony hamada and the river bed, where there’s a surprising variety of desert vegetation, thanks to an underground water source.

Jebel Saghro Loop

Jebel Saghro Loop

  • Distance: Approx. 90 km
  • Duration: Four to five days
  • Start: Boumalne Dades
  • End: Kalaat M’Gouna
  • Difficulty: Moderate

The Jebel Saghro is a mountain range located in the Anti-Atlas region of Morocco, between the High Atlas and the Sahara Desert. Vast barren plains, rocky peaks and deep gorges create a dramatic landscape that is great for exploring by foot.

The Jebel Saghro Loop is an off-the-beaten-path five-day trek that starts near Boumalne Dades and ends at Kalaat M’Gouna, passing through remote hamlets and palm groves, crisscrossing mule tracks and dry river beds. Guides are optional and it makes an ideal winter trek when other Moroccan ranges are covered in snow.

The trek’s challenges are mainly the variable terrain and the lack of water sources along the route but with a lower altitude it’s generally less strenuous than some of the treks in the High Atlas region.

Some highlights of the Jebel Saghro Circuit include the Bab n'Ali rock formations, the Afourer gorges, and the views from the top of Kouaouch. The trek also offers a chance to experience local Amazigh (Berber) culture, as the Jebel Saghro region is home to the Aït Atta tribe, one of the last nomadic tribes in Morocco.

Erg Chebbi trek

Erg Chebbi trek

Jamal Idali

Jamal Idali

  • Distance: Approx. 8 kilometres
  • Duration: Four hours round trip, or camp overnight
  • Start/end: Merzouga/Merzouga

For people who are short on time, or don't want to do too much trekking, I usually recommend the Erg Chebbi trek. From Merzouga it only takes two hours by camel (slightly longer if you prefer to hike). My advise is to set out late in the afternoon so we can catch a stunning sunset from atop the dunes. You can do it as a day trip, but nothing beats camping out under the stars!

This is a popular trek so you'll see plenty of other tourists here. If you want to go further afield I'd suggest trekking to Erg Chigaga instead.

Camel Trekking in the Sahara

Where to go trekking in the sahara, the popular places, plus our expert's favourite hidden gems.

The desert usually conjures images of a sea of shapeshifting dunes, or erg, in Morocco, where the two most visited ergs are Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga, reached from Merzouga and M’hamid, respectively.

You can also explore the desert from oasis towns, as well as dropping in on ancient ksour (maze-like mud-brick villages), fortified kasbahs, the local souk (market), and visit community-run museums that tell the story of nomadic life, warring tribes and the trans-Saharan caravans that traded between Amazigh, African, Jewish and Christian merchants.

Best for a real adventure

Best for a real adventure

M’hamid is the last Moroccan outpost before the Algerian border, where the road dissolves into sand and the desert takes over. It’s the jumping-off point for the dramatic dunes of Erg Chigaga, 60 kilometres to the west – around two hours by 4x4, or a thrilling three day trek by camel.

Erg Chigaga, Morocco’s longest and highest sand sea, ripples for around 40 kilometres with dunes topping 300m. It’s wilder and less visited than Erg Chebbi, and its camps are more isolated, but the off-road journey to get there is more expensive. On the way, there are stops at panoramic viewpoints and perhaps a mint tea break with desert nomads outside their goat-hair tent.

From your campsite, you can trek on foot or by camel, scramble up and sandboard down a towering dune, and savour the sunset and stellar desert views before stargazing from a carpet spread across the sand and music around the campfire. Look out for nocturnal wildlife: the fennec, with its enormous ears, is the smallest fox species, and sand cats are the only desert-dwelling felines. On a morning trek, your guide will point out its tiny tracks zigzagging across the dunes.

For more accessible trekking

For more accessible trekking

The village of Merzouga has accommodation to suit all budgets, and you can arrange everything from a sunset camel safari to sandboarding, quad biking, overnight camping and longer treks.

Erg Chebbi is Morocco’s most accessible stretch of Sahara, with dunes around 22 kilometres long and 25 kilometres wide, reaching lofty heights of 160m in places. It is especially striking at sunset, turning from orange to pink and purple as the night sky glitters with stars. Then you might tuck into madfouna , or ‘Berber pizza’, a stuffed flatbread baked in a fire pit buried in the sand, before a campfire drumming session.

Campsites can be just 15 minutes from Merzouga by 4x4 or a couple of hours by camel. The downsides: convoys of vehicles dropping off people and supplies in high season, quad bikes overtaking camel caravans and being across a dune from another camp. If you want more solitude, choose your camp carefully or go out of season.

For a real hidden gem, the village of Khamlia, six kilometres south of Merzouga, is home to Dar Gnaoua, where musicians – including the renowned Les Pigeons du Sable – celebrate their sub-Saharan African roots, performing to an enthusiastic crowd, shaking krakebs (metal castanets) and keeping their hypnotic beat on tbel drums.

Explore Morocco’s desert culture

Explore Morocco’s desert culture

Dubbed ‘the door to the desert’, Ouarzazate is a good stopover between Marrakech and the Sahara. It was a hub for merchants who met to trade at the sprawling Taourirt Kasbah. Today, it’s known as ‘Morocco’s Hollywood’ for its star turns in Gladiator , among other blockbusters produced at the city’s Atlas Studios – cinephiles can tour the sets.

Nearby, the UNESCO-protected Ait Benhaddou has been the setting for several cinematic and small-screen epics. I like to arrive at the 11th-century hilltop citadel for sunset or sunrise when it’s bathed in a golden glow – the crowds are smaller at this time, too. Climb to its highest point for panoramic views worthy of Game of Thrones .

From Ouarzazate, you can drive south along the N9 to M’hamid through the scenic Draa River valley. It will take around four hours without stops, but I’d recommend dropping in on dusty towns and villages where the way of life has barely changed.

Traditional markets in Zagora

Traditional markets in Zagora

The oasis town of Zagora sits on the edge of the desert, and on its iconic and much-copied sign, a blue-turbaned nomad proclaims that you’re only 52 days from Timbuktu – by camel, that is.

Zagora hosts one of the biggest markets in the south on Wednesdays and Sundays, where alongside ubiquitous pyramids of spices and succulent dates from its palm groves, you’ll find people bartering over everything from car parts to still-clucking chickens.

For a greater understanding of desert culture, I’d recommend the museum in the well-preserved 16th-century Ksar Tissergate that documents the customs and traditions of the Draa Valley, from rustic tools to extravagant wedding costumes.

Zagora has plenty of stylish guesthouses, and while its rocky desert lacks the dramatic dunes of M’hamid, 90 minutes further south, it has an austere charm which you can explore by 4x4, quad bike, camel and on foot.

The Sahara’s hidden gem

The Sahara’s hidden gem

South of the Dades Valley, N’kob feels like a well-kept secret. The ‘village of 45 kasbahs’ is the capital of the semi-nomadic Ait Atta tribe, and some families still follow the seasonal migration, departing in spring for greener pastures to the north.

N’kob is the southern gateway to the Jebel Saghro massif. Sitting between the High Atlas and the Sahara, rising to 2800m, the ‘Mountain of Drought’, dominates this starkly beautiful range, with its high-altitude desert-scapes, otherworldly rock formations and gaping canyons.

From N’kob there’s a three-day loop, or you can traverse the massif from south to north, scale Jebel Saghro, along with numerous shorter treks, including to the striking rock pinnacles of Bab n’Ali.

Trekking in the Sahara: Need to know

Everything you wish you'd known before you booked, when to visit the sahara desert.

Temperatures are less extreme from March to May and again from September to November, making these my favourite times to go trekking in the Sahara. In summer, daytime temperatures regularly hit 40°C and above, while during winter, night-time temperatures can drop below freezing.

Go with a guide!

You won’t see many signposts in the Sahara, so I’d highly recommend using a local guide for trekking and driving, either as part of a group tour or privately. As well as keeping you on track, they’ll share their culture and history and show you the desert’s fascinating biodiversity.

You can book a Sahara camel trek once in Morocco, you’ll find plenty of trekking outfits in Marrakech and any other big city. I’d strongly advise you to do your homework first and check for independent reviews; don’t just book something in the street. Make sure you’re booking directly with the actual operator and not just a reseller. Alternatively you can book ahead of time through either a local or an international operator. (Note that international operators often contract a local operator to actually run the trip.) This is probably the best way to book if you’re looking for something different to the more standard tours, and will allow you to check for things like animal welfare and independent reviews.

When booking – especially if you’re already in Morocco – double check exactly what’s included in the price and the important logistics. Good things to query include: what are the facilities like at camp? Are transfers included in the price? How much time is spent trekking each day? (Camel riding is fun, but first-timers may not want to plod through the desert for hours.) What’s the size of your group, and will you be camping near other groups?

Ethical camel trekking

Camels are working animals and played an important role in Morocco’s rich trading history; designed for desert life, they can survive on minimal water and cover long distances carrying heavy cargo.

Loping over the dunes atop a long-lashed dromedary is still the best way for travellers to discover the desert and you can do your bit to ensure that the camels are well cared for. Check out your camel before you get on board and only ride animals that look healthy with no obvious injuries. And make sure that the handlers appear to care about their welfare, treating them with respect rather than aggression. If you're booking through a large tour operator, ask if they have an animal welfare policy. If you're booking locally, ask to see the camels first: ethical operators should be happy to oblige.

Donating to international animal welfare charity SPANA helps to ensure a better life for Morocco’s working animals, such as donkeys and camels. With five centres around Morocco and two mobile clinics that reach remote areas, including the fringes of the Sahara, they collaborate with animal owners, offering training and treatment.

How to get comfortable on a camel

Camel riding is the quintessential desert experience and while feeling a little saddle sore is all part of the experience, it’s worth popping a painkiller around 30 minutes before you set off.

After you clamber aboard your sitting camel, make sure that you hold on tight – both to the camel and to your belongings – before it begins to unfurl its long limbs. A camel stands up with its hind legs first, so lean backwards then forward as it raises its front legs.

Straddling your camel like a horse might feel more natural, but sitting with one or both legs crossed over the front of the saddle will make for a more enjoyable ride, especially on longer journeys, and make you look like a pro.

A camel has wide, cushioned feet that stop it from sinking into soft sand and an unusual gait known as pacing – moving both legs on one side of its body at the same time – so sit back, relax and go with the gentle rocking motion.

For trekking in the Sahara, a water bottle, wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential, and a bandana will protect your face in a sand storm. Wearing light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and trousers will keep you cool and prevent sunburn – and chafing if you’re camel riding. And don’t underestimate how low the temperature can dip at night, especially in December and January; bring a windproof jacket or fleece, a beanie and woolly socks for sunrise treks. And it's worth packing a head torch and a supply of energy-boosting snacks.

Morocco has an assortment of standing out landscapes from the lavish High Atlas Mountains falling down to the Sahara desert toward the south. Said to be embued with weird and otherworldly characteristics, the ridges and fields of the Sahara Desert extend into separation for an unfathomable length of time. It’s name originates from Arabic, which means The Great Desert. What’s more, incredible it is. Reaching from the Atlantic Coast to the Red Sea, it’s the size of the United States, and covers a fourth of the African mainland. It’s to a great extent uninhabited, yet nomadic Berber individuals live in tents here, and the most dependable methods for travel is by camel.

There are the extraordinary sand hills known as Ergs and the remaining parts of old evaporated river beds known as Oueds. Rough outcrops and levels or ‘Hamada’, spread a great part of the Sahara making this an intriguing visual encounter. The Ergs are astonishing at dawn and nightfall, painted reds and golds by the sun making its way over the sky.

Let’s find out more about this Sahara Desert Trek.

Upon touch down in Marrakech you’ll experience a manic party for the senses like no other. But head south-east for 8 hours and it’s another story altogether.

Welcome to the Sahara Desert. Enjoy the quiet. The peace. The tranquillity.

And the camels, of course. (They snort, by the way.)

On this adventure like no other, you’ll experience heat, Berber life, delicious food, and the raw, unparalleled beauty of the great Sahara Desert.

But let’s not beat around the bush. There are no toilets on this trip. Loos look more like a hole in the ground inside a little tent, and there’s certainly no porcelain in sight.

But if you can make do without mod-cons, you’ll reap the rewards of embracing this Sahara desert trek through the biggest hot desert in the world.

The lack of light pollution and remoteness from civilisation means you’re guaranteed the most breath-taking views of the stars above. Think camping in deepest, darkest rural Wales and then take it to a whole different level. Ten levels, more like.

Sahara Desert Trek Itinerary

Day 1: arrival in marrakech.

ARRIVAL IN MARRAKECH You will meet your Bucket List Leaders at the airport and fly out as a group for Bucket Lister + Trips. If you have booked a Bucket Lister Trip we will see you in Morocco soon! If you have transfers with us we will take you to the hotel. For those making their own way, we will see you in Marrakech. Special Information: Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm today.

Day 2: MARRAKECH TO FAIJA

MARRAKECH TO FAIJA We take a scenic drive across the High Atlas Mountains to Ouarzazate and then Zagora. This takes almost 8 hours, passing date palm oases, Berber villages, and incredible landscapes. In Zagora, we turn off the main highway and drive out to Faija. There we camp, and meet the camels and their cameleers.

Day 3: FAIJA TO OASIS CAMPSITE

FAIJA TO OASIS CAMPSITE Today your Sahara desert tour really begins. In the morning we load the camels and head to Hamada. We have good views of the Saghro Mountains, with little vegetation, and maybe some Bedouin nomads. After lunch in an oasis, we walk along dried riverbeds and arrive at the campsite at sunset.

Day 4: FROM CAMPSITE TO AN EVEN MORE REMOTE CAMPSITE

FROM CAMPSITE TO AN EVEN MORE REMOTE CAMPSITE We climb to the Abbes pass, from where we can observe the vastness of the stony desert. Out there is our next solitary campsite, which we will reach later in the afternoon.

Day 5: CAMPSITE TO DUNES OF CHEGAGA

CAMPSITE TO DUNES OF CHEGAGA Today we trek and far away; we can already spot the dunes of Chegaga in the distance. We'll get to them later today.

Day 6: DUNES OF CHEGAGA TO DUNES OF BOURGANE

DUNES OF CHEGAGA TO DUNES OF BOURGANE After walking the many small dunes of Chegaga, we continue in the direction of M’hamid. We eat under the trees of Tamares, and in the evening, we arrive at the dunes of Bougarne, a site rarely frequented by tourists.

Day 7: DUNES OF BOUGARNE TO DUNES OF M'HAMID

DUNES OF BOUGARNE TO DUNES OF M'HAMID We are picked up from the dunes and start our long picturesque drive back to Marrakech.

Day 8: FREE DAY IN MARRAKECH

FREE DAY IN MARRAKECH Today is a free day in Marrakech. Enjoy a brief rest in the peaceful inner courtyard, before heading out to explore the city for the afternoon. Browse local handicrafts in the bustling souks, visit the stunningly-tiled Ben Youssef Madrasa or see the entertainers of Jemaa el-Fnaa square. Alternatively, book your add-on hot air balloon experience in advance and you can spend the day soaring over the beautiful Moroccan countryside.

Day 9: FLY HOME TO UK

Sahara desert trek reviews.

Here’s what some of our awesome customers had to say:

I have just got back from walking the Sahara. Jake was just amazing keeping everyone safe and making sure we were all included. The trip was made possible for me from the start. The girls on the phone booking and supporting me when needed to the guides who took us. Highly recommend this company 😊😊 – Debra October 23

The Sahara trip was my third Bucket List trip and as usual it did not disappoint.

Right from the madness of Marrakesh to the drive through the Atlas Mountains and of course our trekking journey across the Sahara this trip really was something special.

We had Dave as our Bucket List guide who I’ve had before and is always spot on with the trips and how they are run while over in these destinations. He is always knowledgeable and is always great to get on with. He has a great relationship with the guides in these countries as well and this showed again with Hassan and Houssain. They as well were amazing along with the cameleers/chef and the ones that helped making sure our camp was set up for our arrival after walking all day.

To the Sahara and what a great trek this was in February. The weather was great and it was not too hot to trek in at this time of year. The views from this were unbelievable and it was different every day. The views from top of the sand dunes for me were incredible especially catching the sun set on the top. We were treated to some amazng Moroccan cuisine along the trek and even treated to watching our chef bake bread under the Sahara desert sand and yes you read that bit correct. Just many memories from this trip.

I would definitely recommend this trip in February for sure. It was one of the best ways to see some of the best Moroccan culture and their way of life.

Thanks again to The Bucket List Company for another amazing experience. – Martin Jan 23

Hiking in the Sahara and sleeping under the stars has been on my bucket list for many years. Now, thanks to the Bucket List I’ve had the most amazing time. From start to finish it was extremely well organised; David was a fab tour leader – he made sure we were ok every step of the way, he was knowledgeable and funny. No day was the same, little surprises along the way. Beautiful sunsets, starlit skies, the camels, hiking along ancient riverbeds, sand dunes, wonderful food – I can honestly say that I was so taken by it’s beauty, it made me cry. Thank you to the wonderful staff in Morocco from the chef, the local guides, cameleers, who all helped to make it such a memorable time. Thanks Bucket List! – Celia Jan 23

I love that everything is taken care of so all you have to do is turn up with a packed bag and enjoy the whole experience…and I definitely did that! A brilliant trip with old and new friends doing what I love most – adventure trekking. All the team were such good company and good crack from start to finish. The desert lived up to my expectations! – Gillene March 23

A visa is not required when travelling as a tourist for up to 90 days. A valid passport is mandatory. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave Morocco.

Power supply and plugs?

For Morocco, there are two associated plug types, types C and E. Plug type C is the plug which has two round pins and plug type E is the plug which has two round pins and a hole for the socket’s male earthing pin.

What vaccinations are required or suggested for travel to Morocco?

There are no compulsory vaccinations required for Morocco, however, we recommend you consult with your local travel clinic for the most up-to-date recommendations, particularly in regards to malaria prophylactics.

What currency is used in Morocco?

The currency used throughout the country is the Moroccan dirham. Credit cards are widely accepted and ATMs are common, dispensing local currency.

Can my luggage & items not needed stay safe at the Riad until we return?

Yes, you can leave any unnecessary items for your trek at the Riad where all of your belongings will be secured safely in the luggage room (this is where you may find having an extra bag beneficial)

Do I carry my own luggage?

On the trek, a porter will carry around your duffel bag of around 13kg weight (no wheels) for you which stores all of your trekking equipment and you will need a rucksack/daypack for any additional weight such as a water bottle, snacks, phone etc. to carry on yourself.

What is the longest day of trekking?

The longest trekking day will be day 5 and a total of 17 miles – this sounds intense but the guides look after the groups so well and ensure plenty of breaks and water for the duration of the trekking and are there for full support! There is a chance to ride the camels on the trek too and all of your equipment will be carried by porters.

Are there any water stops on the route?

Mineral water is supplied to you during your trek. We still recommend you bring emergency purification tablets!

At the camps that we will be staying in, are we to be putting up the tents etc or will this be done for us?

The tents will be put up for you.

A trip to Morocco feels like a journey to a different world , with bustling medinas, ancient kasbahs, untouched landscapes and memories to last a lifetime . For many travelers that have had the privilege to travel to this part of the world, no one would ever deny the hospitality and warmth of the Berber people.

The Experience
