  School trips are very exciting and most-awaited by both primary and secondary school students. A program like this provides students with knowledge that is different from classroom lessons. Following the re-opening of school for 2022, check out these 6 interesting places which are suitable for a school trip!

Chocolate Museum, Kota Damansara

Chocolate Museum is located in Kota Damansara and has been operating since 2013. Chocolate Museum is the first of its kind in Malaysia that welcomes students to visit and at the same time, enhancing each visit with 3 elements namely, education on cocoa and chocolate, chocolate production and sale of locally-produced chocolate. Besides that, the Museum will also hold a live demonstration and students will be able to taste the freshly-produced chocolates!

Everyone certainly knows about Zoo Negara, and some may have even visited it. Zoo Negara provides seminars and learning sessions on wildlife conservation and management. Students will learn on animal behaviour, how to handle animals and also public safety. This is in line with the main goal of Zoo Negara which is wildlife conservation. In addition, a program called Zoo Camp Programme which includes Night Walk, Wildlife Enrichment Program and Campfire activities is also offered here!

Selangor Fruit Valley

Selangor Fruit Valley is located in Bestari Jaya. It is an ideal location for students to learn the process of planting flowers and environmental care, as well as enjoy nature walks and the visit to the zoo. Many of our school groups choose to visit Kota Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo on one of our Helping Hands school expeditions. Borneo is home to one of the oldest rainforests in the world, and boasts incredibly high levels of endemism.

I can’t see the destination i’m looking to travel to, can you still help me with my trip.

Yes, absolutely. The destinations listed on our website are only a sample of the different trips we can offer. If you have another destination in mind, simply fill out our enquiry form with all your requirements and one of our Tour Advisers will be in touch with a tailor-made quote.

Do you offer travel insurance?

Yes, all of our trips include comprehensive travel insurance, which now includes Covid cover. This group travel insurance covers individuals needing to drop out of the trip in the following circumstances:

• Because a Qualified Medical Practitioner has diagnosed them as positive for Covid-19 within up to 14 days of departure.
• Because they have been hospitalised due to Covid-19 within up to 28 days of departure.
• Because they have been told to self-isolate by NHS Test & Trace for a period of time that prevents them from taking part in the trip.

The insurance also covers reasonable additional costs of accommodation and flights should an individual contract Covid-19 and have to self-isolate while abroad.

And the policy also covers reasonable additional costs to account for a family member to come across or a group leader/teacher to stay with the individual.

How far ahead should I start planning my trip?

As a general rule, we recommend that you start planning your next school trip 12-18 months before your travel date. This gives you plenty of time to get sign-off from senior leadership and to launch your trip in school to students and parents. Planning early will also mean you have a greater choice of accommodation and travel options.

If you start planning your trip later, don't worry. It is definitely possible to plan a trip in a shorter amount of time. We're here to support you and we have a selection of templates and useful guides to guide you through the process.

Can the trip itinerary be adapted to my curriculum and requirements?

Every trip we organise is unique and your itinerary manager will work with you to understand your curriculum and adapt the itinerary to suit your learning objectives. The itineraries featured on our website are just a sample of what's achievable within a given timeframe. The trip duration and the activities and excursions can be tailored to your needs and budget.

What accommodation options are available?

You can see examples of the types of accommodation we have available in different destinations on the sample trip pages linked above.

All of our accommodation partners have been chosen based on their suitability for school groups. As a member of the School Travel Forum (STF), you can be certain that all accommodation contracted by us complies with local legislation with respect to fire and general safety, is contracted by trained Halsbury Travel staff or reputable agents, receives a standard audit and risk assessment prior to use by Halsbury Travel and receives a supplementary audit if it is used on five or more occasions in a year.

The ESCAPE Greenie Programme is Sim Leisure’s newly expanded eco-literacy programme specially created for Malaysian primary school children, developed to encourage children to develop a love for nature so they will ultimately want to protect and preserve it. First introduced in 2019 this program is a ‘hands-on’ school education programme to awaken school children’s green awareness and their love of nature through a range of DIY activities in the park where children learn about nature, sustainable living principles and environmental protection.

The objectives of the ESCAPE Greenie Programme include:

• Instilling a desire among the youth to cherish the natural environment through outdoor play
• Educating the younger generaton on protecting nature and raising environmental awareness
• Encouraging youth to make a pledge to conserve natural resources and the existing natural environment

The Greenie programme features immersive activities to interact first-hand with nature including:

• Recycling (Nature Arts) This involves toy making using natural leaves and recycled materials like paper. The children will learn about the importance of recycling and how toys can be made from nature and recycled materials.
• Tree Planting The children will be shown how to plant trees. They will learn how trees are a necessary source of producing oxygen and reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
• Water Conservation The children will learn about waterways and the importance of protecting water sources and the ecosystems and marine life they host through finding fish and learning about their habitat in the creek.
• Renewable Energy The children will be shown a solar panels as an energy source and how they can power a light bulb. Solar panels convert sunlight into energy and help to reduce environmental impact, carbon emissions & energy costs.
• Sustainable Food Cycles The children will learn about how free-range chickens produce natural fertilizer and are a good food source (providing eggs) from which many tasty meals can be made

Best school trip for my students. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR FAMILY and INDIVIDUALS as well.

I brought my primary students to this place today and most of them commented it was the BEST SCHOOL TRIP EVER (They had one last month at Putra Jaya Hot Air Balloon and other school trips in the past). We arrived just on time for our first activity which is Tie and Dye. We were welcomed by their friendly staff and the accommodating Ms. Emilia Tan herself . After the introduction, we were immediately given our materials for the activity and they helped the kids put on the plastic apron and do the tying. Every step of the activity was explained well and of course the kids got a rewarding results for their art piece. The same thing with the Batik painting which was done right after the tie dye activity. Some children were given the opportunity to try doing the traditional block printing. They also had a chance to choose their desired design for the Batik painting. Again, they were pleased with their work, Finally, they capped the day by showing the kids how to do patterns on hot chocolate and coffee. Everything was just perfect and on time. Oppps, I must say that the lunch which was included in the package was really good. We had fish and chips which the children kept coming back. The teachers did not have a difficulty time taking care of the kids as the place was secured and had enough place for the kids to play.The lovely garden and the cafe can make a perfect place to relax after a busy week at work. I am talking of adults who would like to have some time off, maybe to de stress even with kids. I highly recommend this for school and family trips and individuals who want to do a short retreat.

I would highly recommend a Batik lesson here. I created a beautiful Batik turtle to take back home to Australia with me. This is a must do for while you are in KL!!!

We couldnt find this place so we called the owner. She asked where we were and came to us. Talk about customer service! Im not really artistic but surprisingly, I enjoyed it very much. The staff teaching us was really friendly and helpful. We did batik on a tshirt. I just wish they had a better quality shirt. But nevertheless, I enjoyed it very much and I like what I have made. This is the best souvenir. Id definitely recommend this place!!!!

i love this batik class, its very relaxing kind of experience. We painted a tshirt its very good for a souvenier because it truly show malaysian art. I love that they have this kind of class because it promotes malaysian arts. The best things about this class is it makes you experience how to do the batik not just buy it. It makes your tour more memorable. I also love the place very nice. The food and drinks are great too! And the hospitality f the staff and the owner. Very good customer service.

An amazing day spent painting with my family. Great to get away from the crowdedness of KL while still being within the Ampang area. We started off with a delicious and inexpensive breakfast with lovely beverages including freshly squeezed orange juice. Then we painted 3 t-shirts and one silk square (there were 4 of us), a couple did original, free hand drawings while the other two used the useful designs that we could trace. With friendly, welcoming and helpful staff I would definitely recommend this and would hurry back if I was ever in the area again. A thoroughly relaxing experience for all ages.

WiLD@Heart is a comprehensive and professional series of conservation education programmes for students aged 12 – 17. Projects range from 5 to 7 days and are based in Borneo.

For most people, the opportunity to study abroad is a privilege that comes with a rewarding experience, as you not only get to explore a new country, but be exposed to various cultures too. And not forgetting, you also get to meet people from different backgrounds along the way.

Of course, pursuing an education overseas presents an opportunity to travel to new places, too.

Malaysian students who studied abroad and international students who pursued their tertiary education here share their travel experiences with us.

When he was a medical student at the Royal College Of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland, Chan Weng Kit, 28, certainly did not miss the chance to explore the various interesting sights and experiences the country has to offer.

He managed to travel extensively around Ireland and a few countries in Europe while studying there for two-and-a-half years, some time ago. He later returned to Malaysia to complete the remaining half of his five-year degree in medicine and surgery in Penang.

From climbing two mountains in one day to walking all the way to a neighbouring town, Chan said he is immensely grateful to have had the chance to experience “life” in this part of the globe.

“One of my most memorable trips here was hiking up Mount Errigal, a 75m-tall mountain and the tallest peak in Donegal. Interestingly, Errigal translates to the ‘king of the hill’, and I indeed felt like one when we reached the top,” said Chan, who was part of the Climbing and Mountaineering Society back in Ireland.

Chan and his friends trekked for nearly four hours before arriving at the peak, where the group was then treated to sweeping vistas of the mountain ranges. As they were descending, someone suggested they scale the smaller king of the hill, the Wee Errigal. Full of spirit and eagerness, everyone went along with the idea. “Two mountains in a single day!” Chan exclaimed.

On another occasion, he visited Bray, a coastal town in Wicklow.

“I actually went there twice to visit my close friend. He took me to the McDonald’s in town. I assure you this was no ordinary McD. In fact, it is deemed one of the ‘coolest’ in the world,” he shared. This particular fast food outlet was housed in a historic building from the 19th century.

When not busy cramming for exams, he frequently found himself playing tourist in Dublin. “Some of the places I went to were the Guinness Storehouse, the Book Of Kells at Trinity College and Dublin Castle,” he shared.

“Ireland is packed to the brim with rich history and architecture as well as some rather picturesque views featuring Mother Nature. During my time there, I explored most of the touristy sights and some hidden local gems.”

Apart from Ireland, Chan also travelled to see the spectacular Northern Lights in Estonia, and visited other Nordic countries, including Sweden and Finland.

Zahirah Yasmin Muhammad Munjit, 27, led an adventure-filled life while living in New Zealand’s South Island for more than five years. She had gone to the country to study Adventure Tourism Management at Queenstown Resort College (QRC), but continued to stay there for a few years after graduating to gain some work experiences.

She worked as a photographer for Shotover Jet, and then later as part of a boat crew.

When she was still studying, she would go on short road trips with friends during her semester breaks to check out the small towns around Queenstown. “Sometimes, the trips were for concerts; I saw my favourite artists on stage such as Khalid and Post Malone,” she said.

Zahirah is passionate about the great outdoors, which pushed her to explore more of New Zealand’s vast natural landscape.

“I’m an avid hiker, so my time there was mostly spent in the woods and the gorgeous mountain ranges,” she shared. Zahirah added that she preferred going on multi-day hikes, either with friends or on her own.

Her favourite spot is Milford Sound, located in the Fiordland National Park. She said that there were always plenty of activities to do there besides hiking, such as kayaking, swimming or picnicking at the waterfalls, and going on a river cruise.

“There are several trails in the national park with interesting terrains like the Routeburn Track and Kepler Track. The former takes you through the Routeburn River, which is an amazing experience, while the latter is also equally enjoyable, as sometimes you have to walk in the rocky stream,” she said.

Zahirah noted that hiking was a good activity for students and tourists on a tight budget in New Zealand, as it is usually free or doesn’t cost much. “I was receiving a monthly allowance from my scholarship, but I worked part time on weekends to fund my travels,” she explained.

“Studying overseas has given me a sense of purpose and shaped who I am today.”

Malaysia is loved for – among many reasons – its cultural diversity, and one such thing that illustrates this is her delicious food. Aynabat Muhammet-niyazova, who hails from Turkmenistan and was a former accountancy student at Quest International University in Ipoh, Perak, could not agree more.

“You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to food in Malaysia. Having tried various dishes, a few of my favourites include nasi lemak, laksa and pisang goreng,” Aynabat, 25, said, adding that she also loves local fruits like mangoes and papaya.

Over the course of her stay in Malaysia, she visited Kuala Lumpur, Cameron Highlands (Pahang), Penang and Langkawi in Kedah. These holidays were taken with her family when they came to Malaysia to visit her. She especially enjoyed holidaying in Cameron Highlands, as she found herself fascinated by the stunning panoramic landscapes of the town.

“Imagine having tea while gazing over the sprawling tea plantations. My family and I tried strawberry picking at a farm, too. It felt like a good break from the daily grind,” she shared.

Aside from visiting the different states, Aynabat said she also made friends from various cultural backgrounds.

“I even became close with one of my friends’ family, and I learnt first-hand about other international students’ cultures and experiences in Malaysia, too.”

One of the upsides of studying outside of your own country is that the experience teaches you how to navigate life on a foreign land on your own, said Aynabat.

“Getting to celebrate different cultural events was the highlight of my stay in Malaysia as an international student at Quest International University,” said 28-year-old Nabila Sidek from Brunei, who studied journalism in Ipoh.

She said that the experience was meaningful to her as she was able to be part of a diverse and multicultural setting.

Nabila also said that besides the fact that Malaysia was close to home, one of the main reasons she chose to study here was because of the cultural similarities we shared. This made it easier for her to adapt to university life.

“Assimilation of culture was a non-issue for me, as it’s pretty much the same where I live,” she said.

She spent most of her weekends discovering local gems with her friends, who were from Ipoh. These little trips helped her unearth many interesting locales in the city.

“I also enjoyed going to the amusement parks,” she said, adding that it was a way for her to unwind.

Nabila and her friends would travel to other states like Penang and Melaka during short semester breaks. “The local street food in Penang was unbeatable. The historical city of Melaka was great for sightseeing, especially for a history buff like myself,” she enthused.

As a student, Nabila would sometimes look for places which offered student discounts, to save money.

She said that studying in a new environment can really change a person in many positive ways. For her, the experience has widened her lens and helped her look at things from a new angle.
