This Nordic country is famous not just for its culture and arts, but also for stunning natural landscapes. You’ll discover that Denmark is home to some of the best-preserved natural areas in the world.

Taste the hearty cuisine, see some of the world’s most impressive architecture and ride bikes through the countryside.

As one of Europe’s most bike-friendly countries, Denmark may be small, but it offers plenty of diversity in landscapes. The coastal cliffs and white, sandy beaches contrast the modern cities with cultural phenomenons of their own.

De leukste fietsroutes, fietsvakantie bestemming Denemarken

Denmark’s seven greatest cycling routes

With the seemingly endless national, regional and local cycle routes in Denmark, how do you know where to start? We’ve got you. Here are Denmark’s seven beloved national long-distance routes, all of which make for a great self-guided cycling tour of Denmark.

From cycling up to the furthest reaches of the country in Skagen all along the backbone of Jutland, to crossing the border in a city-to-city route from Berlin to Copenhagen and gentle island-hopping tours exploring Fyn, there are plenty of bike routes to choose from. Cycling around, across and in Denmark is a pastime enjoyed by many Danes, and now you can join their ranks too!

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route (820 km)

A stop by the beach cabins on Ærø while cycling the Baltic Sea Cycling Route in Denmark

This cycle route in the shape of a figure eight runs through some of the most beautiful areas of coastal Denmark, including the fjords west of the Small Belt bridge, the archipelago around South Fyn and the cliffs on the island of Møn. Island-hopping is the aim of the game in the southern section, where you will cycle over bridges or take your bike on cycle-friendly ferries to explore quiet islands and peaceful beaches, whilst continuing the loop round to the south of Jutland.

West Coast Cycle Route (560 km)

Drone photo of Grenen in Skagen, North Jutland

From the German border in the south to the northern tip of Skagen, this route takes you on Denmark’s Route 1 through some of its best countryside, past beautiful fishing villages and unique natural areas. Along the route, you’ll cycle by the Wadden Sea, a special natural environment, home to seals and some of the country’s best oysters. Pus, the Tipperne bird sanctuary and plenty of towering sand dunes. At the top you’ll reach Grenen, Jutland’s most northerly point, where the Skagerrak and Kattegat seas come together.

The Limfjord Route (600 km)

Person standing at the Limfjord on a cliff, Denmark

Limfjord is Denmark’s largest fjord area, some 180 km of islands, bays and narrow ports where small ferries and multiple bridges connect the land. The area was used by the Vikings over a thousand years ago, and this route takes you around the fjord on flat stretches and wooded ridges, with gentle landscapes on the east coast through to rougher seas on the North Sea coast.

The Berlin-Copenhagen Route (630 km)

Girl biking in the neighbourhood of Christianshavn in Copenhagen

This international bike path connects these two energetic cities with plenty of unspoilt nature, swimming opportunities and more in-between. Part of the Eurovelo 7 cycle route, it is split into three stages and typically takes at least 12 days to complete, including a ferry ride between Rostock and Gedser.

The Ancient Road (450 km)

The Ancient Road, Hærvejen, in Denmark

This historic hiking and cycling route leads from Padborg in South Jutland over moraine hills to Frederikshavn in the north of Jutland, with everything including cultural monuments, historical sights and amusement parks in-between. Once a route for pilgrims, drovers, merchants and craftsmen, today it gives you an opportunity to travel the backbone of Jutland from north to south and enjoy its varied nature and landscape.

The Fjord Path (275 km)

Cows and kayaks in Roskilde Fjord

Starting in Roskilde, some 40km from Copenhagen (and an easy-ish ride from there), this route takes you around Roskilde Fjord and Isefjord on the north and west parts of Zealand. Without too many hills, it clings to the fjord coastline with sea views and car-free roads most of the way.

The Border Route (130 km)

Se Sydjylland från cykelsadeln.

This route traces the area where Northern Germany and Southern Jutland join (an area that celebrated a historic reunification in 2020). It runs from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea and takes a zigzag route across the border from Vidå lock near Højer to the top of the port of Flensburg.

Any questions from the audience?

Experience has taught us that you might be wondering one of the following things right about now...

When is the best time to cycle around Denmark?

If you ask a Dane, there's no bad time to cycle around Denmark. But you might not agree with us...

The peak season for travel in Denmark is June-end August, when temperatures hit around 22◦C and there can be as many as 19 hours of daylight. Shoulder season (late spring and early autumn) is recommended for cyclists looking for quiet roads but reasonable temperatures. Winter (November-February) can be as cold as -1◦C and feels colder with wind chill.

Can I rent a bike on location?

The short answer is: YES! You don't have to bring your own bike if you'd rather not.

In Copenhagen, touring bikes can be rented from Baisikeli and Copenhagen Bicycles for longer trips outside the city. You can take bikes on trains and metros to reach your start point, or hire a bike in the destination on arrival.

Is it possible to go on a cycling tour?

Yes, there are multiple tour operators offering cycling holidays and tours in Denmark, including MTB Tours who offer mountain bike, multi-country trips and day trips. Cycle groups Rapha and Pas Normal Studios run group day trips that start and end in Copenhagen.

Do you have bike-friendly accommodation?

Yes we do! As bike enthusiasts ourselves, we totally get why you don't want to leave your darling bike outside in the cold.

The Bed + Bike scheme is a range of certified bike-friendly accommodation worth looking out. There are also basic shelters available for those who travel by kayak, bike or on foot from 30 kr per night, bookable via the Book en Shelter , Ud I Naturen and Naturstyrelsen websites.

How can I plan and navigate my way around Denmark?

The Naviki website offers excellent route planning information and downloadable routes and suggestions for smartphones and GPS devices, and is an essential for anyone wanting to explore Denmark by bike.

What's your next stop going to be?

We have a few suggestions that might be relevant for you to read. (But not while you cycle of course.)

Self-guided cycling holiday in East Jutland

This self-guided cycling holiday in Denmark’s eastern part of Jutland offers beautiful landscapes of gently rolling hills, inland sand dunes, forests, lakes and fjords, as well as the opportunity to explore the history and heritage of the region, from Viking times to the industrial age.

The trip starts in the charming town of Silkeborg, the capital of Denmark’s beautiful lake district. Leaving Silkeborg, you cycle south to Nørre Snede via the old medieval pilgrimage and trade route Hærvejen, which goes through the very scenic inland dune areas of Sepstrup and Vrads Sande. From Nørre Snede the route continues along Hærvejen, passing the sources of Denmark’s two biggest rivers: Gudenåen and Skjern Å. Take a break in the king’s town of Jelling and go on a historical exploration around the church where you will find the famous Jelling rune stones and two giant burial mounds.

Your next stop is the lovely town of Vejle, beautifully situated on the fjord of the same name, which you will be following for a while the next day towards Horsens Fjord. This stage will bring you through a hilly landscape dominated by Purhøj hill, which was once one of the great meeting points for witches in Northern Europe. Before you reach the old medieval town of Horsens, you can visit Boller Castle where King Christian IV’s wife Kirsten Munk was kept under house arrest after she had cheated on the king.

Shortly after leaving Horsens you turn to follow the Bryrupbane path, which runs along a disused rail line between Horsens and Silkeborg, known as ‘Denmark’s most beautiful railway’. You follow this path to the small town of Brædstrup and en route you cross The Uncovered Bridge, which lay hidden inside a dam for 85 years. After the town of Bryrup you cycle through Velling Forest where you will have stunning views over three lakes. Visit the old Vrads Station, which now works as a restaurant and a little shop. Your trip ends back where you started; in the charming lake town of Silkeborg.

The trip includes luggage transport, route description, maps, GPS tracks and comfortable accommodation.

Day 1: Arrival in Silkeborg

Your cycling holiday starts in Silkeborg where you will be staying in a lovely hotel close to lakes and forest. If possible, arrive early so you have time to explore this charming lake district capital that has a lot to offer. We recommend a trip on the beautiful lakes with  Hjejlen , which is the world’s oldest original coal-fired paddle steamer. You can also visit some of the attractions in the town itself, such as Museum Silkeborg (which exhibits the famous bog body Tollundmanden), Northern Europe’s biggest freshwater aquarium AQUA or the Museum Jorn, dedicated to the famous Danish painter Asger Jorn.

Overnight: Silkeborg

Day 2: Silkeborg to Nørre Snede

Distance: 36 km

On your first cycling day, you ride through the Funder Hills and then turn onto the ‘Ancient Road’ Hærvejen , which leads through Sepstrup Sande  and then  Vrads Sande . Both areas are inland dunes; a result of natural as well as human-influenced sand drifts over thousands of years. Covered in heather, crowberry and juniper, the two areas of inland dunes lie between large heath plantations and long rows of pine trees dating from the end of the 19 th century. As you reach the tiny village of Vrads , you will find a charming old grocery store which offers the perfect opportunity to refuel.

South of Vrads ,  you continue between the  Torup  and  Tingdal lakes before entering Palsgård  forest, which is one of the oldest plantations in Jutland. If you want to learn more about the forest, you can visit the old forester farm, which has been converted into the forest museum  Palsgård Skovmuseum .

Shortly after, you ride through  Nørre Snede and reach your accommodation for the night.

Overnight: Nørre Snede

Day 3: Nørre Snede to Vejle

Distance: 37 km

Today you follow a protected stretch of Hærvejen , along gravel roads and old wheel tracks which exude history. Via a small detour, you can visit the trickling springs from which Denmark’s two biggest rivers – Gudenåen and Skjern Å – rise and flow in opposite directions: east and west. A little further on you pass Saint Peder’s spring, which has attracted pilgrims for centuries due to its healing powers.

You continue through an open agricultural landscape with scattered forest and an old inn from 1609, until eventually you reach the kings’ town of Jelling ; one of the most important towns of the Viking Age. The Jelling Monuments (a collective term for the church of Jelling, the Jelling stones and the two giant burial mounds), are without doubt Denmark’s most important historical monuments. In fact, the Jelling Monuments are considered Europe’s finest Viking Age monuments, and since 1994 they have enjoyed UNESCO World Heritage status. In other words: If you are interested in Viking heritage, Jelling is the place for you! Also well worth checking out is the ‘Kongernes Jelling’ visitor centre, where you can learn more about Christianity’s introduction in Denmark and the beginning of the Danish monarchy.

From Jelling you continue past Fårup lake, eventually reaching the beautifully located fjord town of Vejle .

Overnight: Vejle

Day 4: Vejle to Horsens

Distance: 41 km

You leave Vejle via a very scenic path along the fjord. To your left are steep slopes with tall beech trees and deep ravines. These slope forests are protected by the EU project Natura 2000, which aims to protect especially valuable natural areas. After Bredballe you reach Tirsbæk Beach, where you can take a small detour to a 16 th century Manor and go for a walk in the lovely, terraced renaissance garden.

From Tirsbæk you continue through forest and sometimes along the fjord towards Daugaard Beach. You then turn away from the fjord towards the towns of Daugaard and Bjerre on quiet country roads with an extensive view over the hilly landscape. After Bjerre you can see Bjerrelide , which is the large hill crest formed during the last ice age that can be seen from most of the Horsens region. The highest hill is Purhøj , which is actually an old burial mound from the Neolithic period and was once one of the great meeting points for witches in Northern Europe.

You continue your cycle through the Klokkeda l valley towards Horsens Fjord. En route you pass Boller Castle. The castle, which is surrounded by a moat, is from the 16 th century and it was here King Christian IV put his wife Kirsten Munk in house arrest after she had cheated on him. Take a walk in the surrounding park, where you will find the 1.000-year-old ‘Boller Oak’, Jutland’s oldest oak tree.

Shortly after you reach Horsens Fjord and follow The Planet Path into the old medieval town of Horsens .

Overnight: Horsens

Day 5: Horsens to Brædstrup

Distance: 29 km

Your route from Horsens follows Bryrupbanestien, a disused railway line which once ran between Horsens and Silkeborg through lush valleys, open fields, heather covered heaths, and old beech forests. In its time it was known as ‘Denmark’s most beautiful railway’.

Shortly after the village of Østbirk the path leads you across Den Genfundede Bro (the uncovered bridge). The bridge rises 15 m over the Gudenåen river, and when it was built in 1899 it was the tallest bridge in Northern Europe. In 1929 however, the bridge was already outdated because the track gauge had changed, so it was covered with sand and equipped with two pipes for the river to run through. Instead of a bridge you now had a dam with a hidden bridge inside. In 2014 the old bridge was rediscovered and dug out and today it is one of the area’s great attractions and picnic spots.

You continue through the valleys of Gudenåen and cycle through the old villages Tønning and Træden . Situated on opposite sides of the path, they each have their own medieval church. Eventually you reach Brædstrup where you will find your next hotel.

Overnight: Brædstrup

Day 6: Brædstrup to Silkeborg

Distance: 33 km

From Brædstrup you cycle on towards Bryrup , passing the village of Vinding with its small 12 th century church. In Bryrup you can stock up on supplies before you continue through Velling Forest. This part of the route runs parallel with a 5 km preserved part of the old railway. When the railway was shut down in 1968 it was decided to preserve the rail tracks from Bryrup to Vrads and during the summer you can see an old vintage train going back and forth on this stretch. Your route crosses the preserved tracks several times and you will pass some of the old stations where you can still see the old signals you had to hoist to stop the train. It is an incredibly beautiful stretch with stunning views over the lakes Kvindsø , Kulsø and Snabe Igelsø . At the end of the preserved rail, you can visit the old Vrads Station, where you will find a small restaurant and shop.

From Vrads Station you cycle through the lake district’s Salten Ådal valley and Tømmerby marsh, with its rich birdlife. You pass the town of Them , skirting the edge of the Sønderskov forest that borders the lovely Lake Borre before finally arriving back in the charming lake district capital of Silkeborg.

Day 7: Departure from Silkeborg

Your cycling holiday comes to an end unless you have booked any extra nights. If you have the time you should spend some of the day in Silkeborg and maybe take a boat trip on the beautiful lakes to Himmelbjerget (‘The Sky Mountain’) where you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view over the lake district.

Why do a bike tour in Copenhagen

Copenhagen is an extremely bike-friendly city. According to VisitCopenhagen.com , 44% of all trips to work or school in the Danish capital are made by bicycle.

With all the other cycling they do, it adds up to a collective 1.44 million kilometres cycled daily by Copenhagen’s citizens.

It goes without saying that in Copenhagen there you will find tons of cycling lanes: 23 kilometres of cycle lanes on the road, 43 kilometres of off-road cycle lanes through green spaces, and 350 kilometres of curb-segregated cycle paths.

As such, exploring it by bicycle is one of the best ways to do so. Whether you choose to join an organised bike tour, or do your own self-guided tour, you’re sure to have an amazing time.

Map of my Copenhagen self-guided bike tour

For those who want to do their own independent bike tour of Copenhagen, in this article I have outlined the exact route and stops that I followed on my last Copenhagen trip.

I have embedded a map below, so that you can see exactly where to go and how long it will take. I have designed an efficient bike route, so that you don’t find yourself cycling back and forth around the city.

This Copenhagen self-guided bike itinerary covers all the main attractions in the city, meaning you won’t miss a thing! As you can see from the embedded map below, the route only takes 40 minute or so to cycle.

That gives you plenty of time throughout the day to take your time with each stop, visiting the beauties of Copenhagen and taking coffee and food breaks along the way.

Copenhagen self-guided bike tour details

I always love a good map, but where exactly will you be going? I included a bit more information on each stop, and why you should be adding them to your Copenhagen itinerary .

Start in Tivoli – With its historic wooden roller coaster among many other attractions, this amusement park is world famous. It even inspired Walt Disney to create his own amusement park; Disneyworld.

Christiansborg Palace – Just a short cycle up the road is this Christiansborg Palace, which is the seat of the Danish parliament. It’s one of the most beautiful buildings in the entire city.

Borsen – Then it’s on to Borsen on your bike tour of Copenhagen. This 17th-century former stock exchange at the center of the city is also an important seat of government in the city.

Old Town (Indre By) – This colourful area is the most historic part of the city. Here’s where you’ll find many of Copenhagen’s sights, along with streets lined with charming old buildings.

There will be lots of pedestrians around, so make sure to be careful with your bike.

Nyhavn – An iconic part of Copenhagen. The 17th-century waterfront is renowned for its colourful townhouses that today play host to bars, cafes and restaurants.

Cycling along the canal, taking in the beautiful coloured houses and canal boats, is a unique experience that should feature on everyone’s Europe bucket list .

Here you’ll find also plenty of bars and restaurants with outdoors seating. You can take a break from the cycling, take a seat and enjoy some local Danish delicacies while enjoying the view.

Rosenborg Castle – Home to the Crown Jewels of the Danish Royal Family, Rosenborg Castle was built in the 17th century by King Christian IV.

It’s also surrounded by a beautiful park, so you can easily spend some time cycling around it either before or after visiting the castle.

Frederik’s Church – Known as the Marble Church, this impressive Baroque structure boasts the largest church dome in Northern Europe (you can get amazing views from up there, too!).

Amalienborg – The home of the Danish Royal Family, but it’s (partly) open to the public. You can visit and learn more about the history of the Danish Royal Family here.

Gefion Fountain – This landmark fountain, situated in Langelinie Park, is a really nice place to stop off for a spot of people watching.

Kastellet – Translating to “the Citadel”, this 17th-century fortress is a well-preserved star-shaped structure that still plays home to the Danish military to this day. Otherwise, it’s a tranquil place to hang out.

Little Mermaid – Nearby is arguably the most iconic sight in the whole city. You’ll find the statue of the Little Mermaid in human form, sitting on a rock gazing out to sea.

Freetown Christiania – Next on your self-guided bike tour of Copenhagen, you can simply loop back to the boho district of Freetown Christiania and explore at your leisure.

Should you join a bike tour or do it independently?

It ultimately depends on your travel style and preference, there isn’t a right or wrong way to do it. Since you’re going around a city with plenty of cycling lanes, you can easily do it alone.

It’s not like going mountain biking on a dangerous route where you could get lost and need a guide. That said, having a local guide is always an added plus.

If you join a tour you will have a local guide taking you to all the best spots in Copenhagen, both the famous and hidden ones, and telling you about their history as you go.

It will obviously be less independent, but you will learn more about Copenhagen, plus if you’re a solo travellers it’s a great way to meet other people.

Regardless of whether you choose to do it alone or join a tour, in this article I have listed everything you need to know for both. From the self-guided route to follow, to the best tours you can join, you have all the info!

Nothing says Copenhagen quite like the breezy way its citizens glide through her streets on their bikes. The city embodies bike culture and is frequently named the best city for cycling in the world.

So why not join in the fun and tour Copenhagen on two wheels. You can ride the city, see the sights and experience Danish culture all at the same time. Fantastisk! “That’s Danish for fantastic” – as my Copenhagener friend Erin would say. All you need to do is rent a bike.

Bike culture in Copenhagen

Denmark always appears at the top of the world’s happiest countries lists as well as among the leaders in cycling culture . This is probably not a coincidence if you ask me. I find driving stress pretty intolerable.

The people of Copenhagen love to cycle with over 50% of the population commuting to work, school or university by bike. Everyone does it, even the Crown Princess!

In Copenhagen, there are over 450 kilometres of bike paths, many of which are slightly raised and clearly marked. This ensures a feeling of safety as you pedal the city’s roads.

Last but not least, the terrain is flat making the conditions ideal for a leisurely cycle for all types of riders including families.

Highlights of Copenhagen: A self-guided bike tour

I’ve created a little tour to show you the highlights of Copenhagen. At 10.5km and on flat terrain I rate this tour as easy as it could also be done on foot. We hired bikes and rode around Copenhagen as a family, and it was such an enjoyable ride.

Here is a map of my suggested tour of Copenhagen stopping at most of the highlights. Clicking on the map will take you straight to Google Maps where you can add to your smartphone or print if you are old school – including all the streets and turns. The details of the stops are below.

You could start at any point along the map as it is a circuit. I think beginning at Nørreport station is a good idea as you can easily pick up bikes there and have a coffee and breakfast at Torvehallerne market before heading on your way.

We liked the porridge with extras at Grød  which is open from 7.30am on weekdays and 9.00am on weekends.

From Nørrebro station, head northeast along Øster Voldgade past the Botanic Gardens and Rosenborg Castle and follow the route until you reach Langelinie, home to Copenhagen’s most famous citizen – The Little Mermaid.

The Little Mermaid

The statue of the Little Mermaid was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale of the same name written in 1837. She is a tiny little thing who looks shyly at the water as hundreds of tourists try to snap a selfie. Many people are disappointed with how small the statue is but she is an iconic symbol of the city and one you would regret missing.

Nearby: Kastellet – a 17th-century star-shaped fortress with lovely grounds and a windmill

It’s a very short ride past Kastellet and its moat to your next stop.

Gefionspringvandet and St Albans Church

You can’t miss the magnificent Gefionspringvandet fountain featuring the Norse goddess Gefjon designed by Danish artist Anders Bundgaard. The fountain sits next to St Albans Church, also known as the English Church as it was built to serve the English population of the city.

Nearby: peaceful Churchill Park renamed in 1965 to commemorate Winston Churchill and British assistance in the liberation of Denmark during World War II.

Back on your bike again for another short ride down Amaliegade to Amalienborg Palace

Amalienborg Palace

Home of Queen Margrethe II, Amalienborg Slot or Palace was built around a central square where you can see magnificent views of the harbour and nearby Frederiks Kirke with its distinctive domed roof.

I love that the palace, just by virtue of its design, is so accessible to the people of Copenhagen. You can tour the palace and if you time your tour right, you can see the daily changing of the guard that happens at 12:00 noon in the square. You’ll need to be there a little earlier to get a good spot for viewing.

Nearby: Amalienhaven park and fountain where you can get close to the water for views across to the modern Opera House or relax in the peaceful gardens

Next ride towards Frederiks Kirke and around it to reach Store Kongensgade towards Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn.

Built in the 17th century Copenhagen’s colourful harbour is simply a great place to wander, relax and watch the people and boats leave and enter the harbour.

If you wanted to take a break from riding, you could join a boat tour of Copenhagen from here. Tours leave every 15 minutes in summer, and you get another perspective of the city from the water. It’s touristy but fun and if you’re lucky you could see one of the bridges being raised to let the tall ships through.

Nearby: Take a walk to the harbourfront where you will see the impressive modern building that houses the Royal Danish Theatre

Hungry yet? Head across the newly opened Inderhavnsbroen and visit Papiroen or Paper Island for lunch

Paper Island

Paper Island is where you find Copenhagen Street Food.  This hugely popular venue houses a huge number of street food vendors in a converted warehouse. On my second visit to Copenhagen, I went back there just to taste Duck It’s pulled duck burger  I’ve been thinking about since my first visit. The food stalls open from 12.00 noon each day and you will not leave hungry.

Now head off Paper Island and onto Prinsessegade where you will find your next stop

Freetown Christiania

Freetown Christiania is an alternative car free and green community in the heart of Copenhagen. The neighbourhood of around 850 residents is found in the grounds of a former military barracks and has been self-governing since its foundation since its foundation by hippies in 1971.

A visit to Christiana is an interesting insight into a unique society. You can wander the streets and visit cosy cafes and craft shops. We took a walk around the beautiful lake and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere.

The area is notorious for its “Green Light District” and Pusher Street where drugs are freely bought and sold despite being illegal in Denmark. You are advised not to take photos in this area and should take that advice seriously. Read more about Freetown Christiania .

Nearby: Baroque Vor Frelsers Kirke with its famous helix spire that can be seen throughout Copenhagen

Time to head north-west down Torvegade and across the canal to Slotsholmen

Christiansborg Palace and Slotsholmen

As the seat of Danish government, Christiansborg is a complete contrast to Freetown Christiania. Home to the Folketinget or Danish Parliament, it is a former royal palace  and as grand as that description implies.

You can visit the state rooms and royal kitchens as well as the ruins of the original medieval castle beneath its foundations or take in views of the city from the tower

Christiansborg is on the small island of Slotsholmen where there are several other museums and attractions such as the Danish Stock Exchange. Visiting hours are from 10:00am.

Tip – you can park your bike in the Rigsdag Courtyard

Now ride into Indre By, Copenhagen’s true centre, and down Nikolaj Plads and Kristen Bernikows Gade to your next stop

Rundetaarn – the Round Tower

If you’re interested in astronomy, you won’t want to miss the Rundetaarn, the oldest working observatory in Europe. There are wonderful views of the city from the viewing platform accessed by a spiral staircase to the top of the tower. Rundetaarn is open from 10:00am – more information .

Head down Landemærket for the last stop on your bike tour – the beautiful King’s Gardens and Rosenborg Slot. You will need to park your bike at the entrance and walk through the gardens.

Rosenborg Castle

One my favourite castles in the world, Rosenborg Castle has fairy-tale qualities. Originally a royal summer house, the castle lies in the Renaissance style King’s Gardens and is surrounded by a small moat.

Rosenborg Slot was built in the Dutch Renaissance style by King Christian IV and has several turrets and an impressive hall. You can visit the castle and view a collection of the Danish Crown Jewels as well as many of the state rooms.

More information about visiting Rosenborg Slot

And that’s the end of your tour! Head back to Nørreport station by riding along Gothersgarde and turning left at Nørre Voldgade

Explore Copenhagen’s neighbourhoods by bike

Now you’ve explored the highlights why not venture beyond the city centre and discover Copenhagen’s laid back neighbourhoods.

Take a ride out to Nørrebro through Assistens cemetery and browse the boutiques and cafes along Jægersborggade. You can get a great coffee at the Coffee Collective, try new Nordic cuisine at Manfreds and indulge in some special ice cream at Istid. Assistens Cemetry is worth a stop to visit the grave of Hans Christian Anderson too.

If you’re travelling with kids, I recommend a trip to Østerbro where you can explore Fælledparken. This huge park has playgrounds and activities for children of all ages. Our kids loved learning about the rules of the road in a traffic school playground and jumping on trampolines and the huge swings close by.

I was most impressed with the coffee tuk tuk keeping the parents of Copenhagen caffeinated as they watched their kids play.

Copenhagen bike rental

We rented bikes with  Donkey Republic who have around 700 bicycles in convenient locations around the city. All you need to do is download their app and locate one of their bicycles close by. This is easy, even among a throng of Danish bikes, as they all sport vibrant orange stickers.

You then book your bike for however long you need it and use the app to unlock it. Once you’ve adjusted your seat and had a little test ride you are ready to go!

Tip: Look for one of the newer bikes with a holder for your phone, so you can navigate your route safely and with ease

No doubt you will want to stop and get off your bike and take a look around. With your Donkey bike, you just use the app to lock it up safely and unlock it again when required.

When it is time to return your bike, you simply take it back to where you found it. The bike is then registered as returned.

You can rent a bike in Copenhagen with Donkey Republic starting from DKK 100 per day – around £10. There is a small optional charge if you want to insure the bike against theft.

Family bike hire

We travelled to Copenhagen as a family and had some special requirements for bike hire. At the time of writing our kids were not yet 4 years old. I really wanted to try out the famous 3 wheeled  Christiana cargo bikes .

Donkey Republic were able to help with this by engaging one of their local partners. Do give them a call if you want to hire a family bike in Copenhagen and I am sure they’ll do their best to assist.

Road rules and tips for riding in Copenhagen

Familiarise yourself with road rules and etiquette before embarking your tour or hiring a bike in Copenhagen.

Here are the main points:

✪ Danes ride and drive on the right-hand side of the road. Keep to the right at all times unless overtaking

✪ Helmets are not required to be worn by law

✪ Bike lanes must be used when present. You may not ride on footpaths

✪ You must use hand signals to indicate if you are turning or stopping

✪ When turning left, cross to the opposing right corner and wait for the traffic light to change before proceeding

✪ Headlights must be used at and after dusk

✪ Helmets are not required to be worn by law but you can hire helmets , and it’s a good idea

I found this sheet of bike riding rules helpful and this site of Danish road signs

You can take your bike on public transport in Copenhagen with some common sense restrictions such as not bringing bikes on trains during peak hour. Family cargo bikes are not allowed on public transport.

Guided bike tours of Copenhagen

Our friend Erin who lives in and writes about Copenhagen served as our guide however if you are new to the city, are a bit nervous about riding and don’t have local connections; I recommend joining a bike tour.

I’m such a fan of local tours . Taking a bike tour of  Copenhagen will help you get up to speed quickly on the road rules and culture. You’ll also learn about the city’s history and culture and discover what makes Copenhagen unique.

If you are travelling as a family, do check out these family friendly bike tours of Copenhagen . Owner and guide Maike is passionate about showing family groups her beautiful city.

When I first visited and fell in love with Copenhagen   last year I was not able to ride through its streets. Now I’ve tried biking the city I feel like I know the Danish that much better.

Would you hire a bike in Copenhagen?

Useful information about your cycle tour in Denmark

The climate in denmark.

Its special location between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea gives Denmark a mild climate, regulated by the two seas. The flat land in turn ensures that it rains relatively little compared to Central Europe - the amount is about ten percent less than the German average. For cycling, this is of course just as pleasant as the moderate temperatures, which vary between about 2 degrees daytime in winter and 20 degrees in midsummer.

The Danish cuisine

Since Denmark is a peninsula and has many harbour towns, fishing has developed into a significant economic factor. However, the fish are also found on the domestic menu. A typical fish dish of the Danes is torsk, in English cod, with boiled potatoes and mustard sauce. But the absolute classic is the so-called smørrebrød, the impressive open sandwiches. Whether with butter, herring and egg yolk or salmon and dill, there are no limits to creativity when it comes to toppings. Bon appétit!

Bike tour with a guide

Going by bike is a very Danish thing. By tradition we transport ourselves by bicycle on an everyday basis throughout life. The bike is also ideal for a holiday or if you want to experience a bit more of the city than just the very central core. If we want to go out into the countryside, it's great with the free exercise provided by the bike. Furthermore to feel the wind in our hair and to enjoy all the scents that greet us without any filtres.

Bicycle Ride to Moesgaard – From Aarhus

You might have heard of "hygge" before; On this tour to Moesgaard we will experience maximum hygge levels.

We'll take bikes in the city and cycle towards what used to be an old farm and mansion and is now home to parts of the university. The tour is fairly easy to cycle (except one steep climb). We'll stop at Moesgard and if you would like to we can visit the prized museum, visit an old mill and walk to the unspoiled Southern Beaches of Aarhus.

You will get to see what I perceive as the epitome of Danish country side in all its beauty and – of course – hygge!

Beautiful Bike Tour Ringe-Korinth by a Disused Railway Line

Guided bike tour from Ringe (in the middle of Funen) by a disused railway line, now asphalted road and utmost comfortable for biking. We will ride at a moderate pace through the beautiful landscape of Funen from Ringe to Korinth and to the manor house of Brahetrolleborg.

We will pass by the manor of Boltinggård, the small towns of Espe and Højrup, the Viking castle of the designer Jim Lyngvild, Ravnsborg, to Korinth with its recently restored charming inn. From here we go to Brahetrolleborg and pay a visit to the church containing a beautiful baptismal font made by the famous Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. Our ride back to Ringe can be by smaller side roads or by the disused railway line again, if that is preferable.

The countryside is not very hilly, and we will make reasonable stops on the way, both for drinking and for pieces of information. I recommend the use of a bicycle helmet.

The tour starts and ends at Ringe Railway Station. Total distance about 36 km.

Contrasts in Copenhagen's South Harbour

Visit and experience an alternative and contrasting Copenhagen South Harbour by the water, on bicycle.

For many years, Copenhagen's South Harbour had the reputation of being Copenhagen's poorest worker neighbourhood, where alcoholics hang out on every street corner. In recent years, there has been a rapid development in the area which creates some exciting contrasts. The South Harbour has suddenly become an attractive place to live and visit.

On this bicycle tour we will visit both the old and authentic South Harbour, the alternative South Harbour with the various forms of housing, such as the houseboats, the allotment garden area, the marina and the newer areas by Sluseholm canal town and Teglholmen. We will also visit some of the area's green oases, including Sydhavnstippen, where we may be lucky to spot the cute sheeps or alpacas that live there.

As the South Harbour is a large area and I would like to give you the whole experience, the tour will be on bicycle. In fact, it is also the most local and Copenhagen way to get around in the city. We will meet at the bicycle rental place, Baisikeli Rent a bike, Ingerslevsgade 103, 1705 Copenhagen, right by Dybbølsbro's S-train station. Here we hop on the rented bicycles and start the tour. The tour takes a total of 4 hours, from the time we all get the bicycles and hit off, and there is a stop included on the route for a little refreshment.

Bike rentals from DKK 100.

Løverodde – Mountain Bike at Løverodde, Sdr. Stenderup Forest

The best combination between great nature and a easy mountainbike ride is found at Løverodde, south of Kolding.

We bike on small trails right next to the beach, and follow the coastline of the Little Belt strait. On top of the big cliff, we simply have a great view over the sea and the island of Funen, and I'll tell you a bit about the landscape and the area.

We continue the bike ride through the woods on good wide trails. The trails are especially suitable for those who have limited experience with mountain biking.

We end the tour by biking around the Paradise Bay, and it is certainly not an exaggeration that the bay has this name.

The price is DKK 500 per person – min. 4 people.

Sdr. Stenderup

A bike tour - why

By tradition we transport ourselves by bicycle in Denmark. We start our biking tradition when we as children get our first walking bike. The next bike comes with support wheels and later the two-wheeled ones follow. As we grow, so does the bikes and the distance we can get around increases. Have you noticed how happy small children become when they are allowed to frolic on their walking bikes? The joy of independence is a lifelong feeling of freedom that continues on all the following bike tours.

Holidays on bicycles

Many people are familiar with going on holiday by bicycle. Feeling the wind in your hair, the scents that your nose discovers, the ability to stop or take a break right where you want. This is the essence of a cycling holiday. When several generations are going together, it also ensures that everyone is equally tired at the end of the day.

A cycling holiday is good exercise as well as a great way to experience Denmark. If you want to know more about the area you are enjoying on your cycling holiday, we recommend you let a local guide come along to reveal all the good stories as you experience Denmark together.

Experience the city by bike

Do you want to experience a city without facing the challenge of parking a car? Then the bicycle will be the perfect means of transport. On the bike you can get almost anywhere and often make shortcuts. If you let a local guide accompany you, the guide knows the cycle paths, shortcuts and best cycle routes.

In Copenhagen, the guide can lead the way and show you the new super cycle path and relevant detours. Together with your guide, you can also go by bike to Kalveboderne on a tour gathering herbs. Or you can experience Sydhavnen with all the exciting contrasts. If you're more focused on enjoying the inner city, the bike is an obvious mean of transport. Fortunately there are many great cycle paths so it's very easy to get around. The guide leads the way and knows where to guide you.

You can also go on a guided bike tour in Odense, where a tour through the history of the city's liberation is a good choice. It is all about the end of the World War II in Odense and the guide knows where history unfolded. It is a story of sadness and joy. Odense aims to be Denmark's No. 1 cycling city and calls itself the City of Cyclists. The city also has a really nice information page about Cyklisternes by Odense . Unfortunately it is in Danish only. Google may reveal itself being your friend if you want to know more about Odense Cycling City.

From Odense, it is also an obvious choice to go by bike along some of the wonderful cycle paths and let the guide take you to places such as Langesø and Kerteminde or somewhere else entirely. There are many good cycling experiences on Funen, the island that would like to be Denmark's, and even the world's, best cycling island.

By bike in nature

It is so obvious to experience the Danish nature by bicycle. You can cycle in many places. The cycling island of Funen, the beautiful nature around Vejle and lovely Zealand and Lolland-Falster. The options are numerous - even more than you can see in our list of guided bike tours. If you would like a guide, get in touch and we will find you a guide.

We are happy to say visit Denmark by bike with Guide Service Denmark and our bicycle guides.

Itinerary of Denmark cycle tour from Copenhagen

Day 1 sunday: copenhagen – individual arrival.

Hotel arrival and free time to explore The Bike Capital of the World. Visit to Nyhavn, the Royal Castle, Christiania or the amusement park Tivoli. Overnight stay in the centre of Copenhagen

Day 2 Monday: Copenhagen –  Hørsholm 36 km / 23 miles

Cycling through Copenhagen on your bike is a fantastic way to get started. You will pass some of the famous sights such as the Little Mermaid and the famous Bellevue beach. In Dyrehaven, the Royal hunting grounds, you will be cycling on peaceful paths surrounded by century old trees and curious deer. You can make a refreshment stop at “Bakken” , the oldest amusement park in the world, before reaching your hotel in the  Hørsholm  area on the coast of Øresund.

Day 3 Tuesday: Hørsholm –  Helsingør – 20 km / 12 miles

Today you will be cycling along the coastline passing two of the finest museums in Denmark. In Rungsted you can visit Rungstedlund, the home of the Danish author Karen Blixen (world famous for “Out of Africa”), and in Humlebæk you can visit the Museum of Modern Art “Louisiana, famous not only for its exhibitions, but as well for its beautiful architecture and location. You will end up in Snekkersten, a former fishing village. Snekkersten is only 2 km from the centre of Helsingør, so after an easy day on the bike you might wish to spend the afternoon visiting the old borough with the impressive Kronborg Castle (the castle from Shakespeare´s play “Hamlet”).

Day 4 Wednesday: Roundtrip in Sweden and Helsingør – 40 km / 25 miles

If you missed Kronborg yesterday you will have the chance today. The highlights of the day might be the Danish Maritime Museum listed among “52 places to go in 2014” by New York Times. If you still have time, you can take the ferry (every 15 minutes, price 8 Euro for a roundtrip) to Helsingborg. From here you can take a round trip of approx. 35 kilometres along the coast to the beaches and small fishing villages and back through the Swedish forests and fields.

Day 5 Thursday: Helsingør – Hillerod – 54 km / 34 miles

The route North out of Helsingør is unique with its views to the Swedish coast only 4 kms away. The large ships sail close to the coast, as you cycle along the coast towards Hornbæk. After a good lunch you continue along the coast on narrow lanes passing a couple of lighthouses with the beach far below you. Gilleleje, a lively fishing and yacht village, is the northernmost town on Zealand as well as the most important harbor and holiday resort on the coast of northern Zealand. Here you will find a lovely beach and a nice harbor where you can find great restaurants. You will stay at the lovely Gilleleje Beach Hotel on the outskirts of the village. It is a very beautiful and classical Danish beach hotel overlooking the sea and the food is of high standard.

Day 6 Friday: Hillerød – Copenhagen – 38 km / 24 miles

Heading south towards Copenhagen you pass idyllic sceneries, lovely forests and wetlands with a rich birdlife. You will be impressed by the rich nature in a densely populated area close to the capital. You will be amazed how easy it is by bike to cycle from the green northern Zealand to the capital of Denmark. While the first 18 kilometres towards Farum are on winding paths and smaller roads, the last 20 kilometres are along the new “supercykelsti” (Super cycle path), that brings all the commuting cyclists to Copenhagen. When you come to Nørrebro, which is one of the most colourful neighbourhoods in Copenhagen, you have to slow down and be aware of all the different cyclists heading towards the city centre. Overnight stay in the centre of Copenhagen.

Day 7 Saturday: Copenhagen – End of tour or extension

Check out or use the possibility to extend your stay with a few additional days in Copenhagen.
