Seven Bro7hers is the business bringing northern soul and family values to the alcohol industry

From home brews in their father’s basement to an award-winning brewery, craft beer really is a family business

The best ideas are often formed in the basement of your family home- at least according to award-winning craft brewers Seven Bro7hers. The brewery may have officially been launched in Salford in 2014, but its origins can be traced back to the childhood of the founders - all seven of them.

Brothers Guy, Keith, Luke, Dan, Nat, Kit and Greg are the faces behind the brand, but they credit a lot of the inspiration to set up a business to their father, the aforementioned owner of both the basement, and the beer kit that started it all. Raising a boisterous household with not only seven sons, but also four daughters, their father Eric would often seek refuge from all the activity in his basement, occupying his time with fermenting and creating beer - at first for his own consumption, and with varying degrees of success.

The odd explosion wasn’t as rare as the family may have hoped, but in such a huge, noisy household, it also didn’t seem too out of place with the rest of the hubbub. Kit McAvoy described growing up as a "happy" time, even though as one of the youngest silbings, he was often at the mercy of his older brothers' mischief.

"As a child growing up in such a big household just seemed very normal to us at the time. It isn’t until you get a little older that you realise that what we had was so unique. There was never a dull moment! Our parents were very loving and caring but there was only so much time they could commit to us," he said.

"So you can imagine there was always one of the brothers or sisters trying to cause mischief or come up with a different game to keep us all entertained. The younger kids, myself included, were quite often the brunt of the entertainment. Although we didn’t have everything we wanted as kids, we were always happy and now, looking back, we consider ourselves very lucky to be part of a loving family."

It became tradition that when each brother reached the age of 18, they would have their first drink in their father's basement, cementing the strong connection between family and beer, and helping ale have a special significance in all of the brothers’ lives. Kit explained that seeing the drive and determination his parents showed in their business endevours, as well as the values they instilled in the family, meant that all the the brothers felt as though they could work together one day.

He said: "Our parents were quite entrepreneurial, both of them being business owners. Dad was a self employed builder and he also owned a DIY shop in Salford. Mum, when she wasn’t raising 11 children, ran a sandwich shop next door to Dads. As a family we have always wanted to do something together as it was built into our DNA to be business owners.

"Brother Keith was working in Oslo and he saw how massive the craft beer scene was out there. Nothing like that at the time was happening in Manchester. Almost nine years ago now we had several get togethers, over a beer obviously, and started to build on the idea of what is now Seven Bro7hers Brewery.

"It just made more and more sense, we all love beer, our Dad taught us how to make his homebrew in the basement, the ingredients were all there."

Setting up a business was by no means easy, but the hard work and dedication came to fruition when the brewery was set up in 2014, a stone’s throw away from their childhood home in Weaste. The site also had a taproom attached, and with each brother assuming different roles in the business, so Seven Bro7hers was born.

Since its inception the business has gone from strength to strength, expanding to open further sites across the Manchester region, including Ancoats , Media City , Middlewood Locks , and an alehouse in Terminal Two at Manchester Airport . They also have branches outside of Manchester, with a bar and kitchen opening in Halifax and their beerhouse in Liverpool having recently opened on June 27. Although Kit admits that working with family can "come with its difficulties" he firmly believes that they are definitely stronger together.

"Being a family of 11 brothers and sisters we have always been quite a close family unit, looking out for each other and propping each other up through difficult times. We have been the same through these last nine years of business," he added.

"When times get tough we pull together and use all our skills and background to overcome any adversity. It’s not always been easy but we have always come though any difficult times much stronger."

Over the years they garnered many accolades for their innovative flavours of beers. Their Watermelon Wheat Beer was awarded Double Gold at the European Beer Challenge, with their Honeycomb Pale Ale winning Gold at the same event, and Silver at the London Beer Competition for their Pilsner.

That desire for innovation is a key element to the success of the brewery, and Seven Bro7hers have always had a keen eye on sustainability and working green solutions into the brewing process. In 2018 they made the news when they created Throwaway IPA, partnering with cereal juggernauts Kelloggs to “upcycle” the corn flakes that were too big, small or overcooked and did not pass quality control. The venture was so successful that they added the beer to their permanent offerings, as well expanding further to create Sling It Out Stout and Cast Off Pale Ale.

The alcohol and hospitality business is very much a family affair beyond just the seven brothers; their sisters have also set up their own gin distillery, called Four Sis4ers , where they produce a variety of botanical flavours, including their Strawberry and Lime and Thyme gin which won the World Gin Award Silver and Bronze respectively. The family believes that between the four spirit-distilling sisters and seven beer-brewing brothers, they must “together make the largest family of direct siblings in the global alcohol industry.”

The whole McAvoy clan may have come a long way since beers made in the basement of a 13 person household, but they still hold fast to their roots, as it’s an important part of their success. Kit is positive t hat whatever the next steps may be, it will always involve family.

"Our goal has always been to spread the craft beer word and get as many people turning to craft beer over their usual choice as possible. But with family and community values at the forefront of everything. We picture craft beer as the glue that brings friends and family together," he said.

"We see this first hand at our beerhouses and it’s amazing to be a part of this and so humbling for us. Further down the line we want to be able to bring more of our beerhouses to different cities to spread the welcoming, non-pretentious world for people to enjoy our craft beer."

The story of... Seven Bro7hers Brewery

Could you imagine working side by side with your family every day? How about with seven siblings? To some of us that might sound horrifying: but at Seven Bro7hers Brewery, it works like a dream. Brewing genius Greg McAvoy, alongside his hardworking brothers Keith, Kit, Nathan, Danny, Guy and Luke started Seven Bro7hers as a way to work together a team. They just so happen to have cracked the art of brewing high quality craft beer in the process.

These apples didn’t fall too far from the tree. They cite their main inspiration behind the business as their dad, whose pride and joy was a home brewing kit he brewed with down in the cellar of their family home. “The older you get the more you start recognising the huge influence your parents had on you,” they say. “We all agree that our dad had a massive impact on us and he played a monumental part in sparking our interest in brewing beer.”

After months of planning and a period living in Oslo - an inspiring city with brewpubs aplenty - the brothers got together over a beer and decided to go it and set up their own brewery. Kit, Nathan and Greg got to work on brewing and creating recipes, Guy and Dan designed and built the brewery, Keith created the business plan and Luke became the man behind the IT systems. They each applied their different backgrounds and skills to begin the Seven Bro7hers Brewery journey, and they sold our first pint of beer in August 2014.

In the last couple of years, Seven Bro7hers Brewery opened its first bar in the city centre of Manchester after a successful round of crowdfunding. The beerhouse serves a mouthwatering menu of gourmet burgers and hot dogs to accompany its finest beers in keg, cask, bottles and cans. They also stock and rotate a few selected guest beers.

Looking to the future, the brothers’ plans for Seven Bro7hers brewery include opening more beerhouses, increasing production, and bringing canning and bottling in-house.

One of the core principles behind Seven Bro7hers beer is that they’re #clearwithbeer in everything they do. This is beer created with everyone in mind: from the complete novice to the craft beer geek.

Seven Bro7thers’ IPA is a 5% ABV with a notable bitterness, while the Watermelon Wheat Beer , at a slightly lower 4.5%, is sweeter, subtler and fruitier, infused with fresh watermelon. With strawberry and pineapple aromas, it’s an ideal summer beer. For something a little lighter that’ll go the distance, the Seven Bro7hers Session is perfect: it’s a very refreshing option with citrus and tropical aromas and has only 3.8% ABV.

Finding a wife in the 1850's wasn't easy for men living in the Oregon mountain region, especially when there are seven brothers in one family! That's how our story begins in "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers." Adam, the oldest of the seven, sets out for town to bring back a wife to take care of the cooking, cleaning and mending. In town, he meets Milly, the server and cook at the local cafe. He knows that it's sudden, but asks her to marry him. Milly is up for an adventure and says yes because she's tired of being the cook for all the men in town and can't wait to take care of just one man. But he "forgot" to mention those other six brothers waiting back at home. After her discovery, she sets out to make the others the most eligible bachelors around!

"Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" is a high-energy musical combining the classic, physical dancing styles with fun and energetic scenarios. Not only do the brothers have to dance eloquently at times with their brides, complete with eye-catching lifts and tosses, they also have fun and unique numbers that you would only see in "Seven Brides." One situation includes a complicated and physical dance with axes and another with blankets as she gets them ready to go to the social.

Playing the spitfire Milly is Kate Marshall. Justun Hart will play the head of the Pontipee family, Adam. There's an energetic and talented cast to compliment Adam and Milly. The Pontipee brothers will be played by Wesley Drummond (Benjamin), Carver Duncan (Caleb), Matt Casey (Daniel), Ben Cramer (Ephraim), William Leon ard (Frank), and Max King (Gideon). The beautiful brides will be performed by Keirsten Benzing (Alice), Diane Huber (Dorcas), Danielle Barnes (Ruth), Kelsey Beckert (Liza), Avery Bryce Epstein (Martha) and Corinne Munsch (Sarah).

The suitors will be played by Glenn Britt on (Jeb), Sean Cleary (Nathan), Marty Craft (Luke), Katharine Gentsch (Swing), Joshua Kolberg (Matt), Corey John Hafner (Zeke) and Olin Davidson (Joel). Rounding out the cast as The Reverend is Michael Weaver who toured with Fiddler on the Roof last season, and husband and wife team Dustin and Courtney Cunningham as Mr. and Mrs. Hoallum, who will also be playing the guitar and accordion live on stage.

Dean Sobon who was at the helm for the Prather Entertainment Group national tour of Fiddler on the Roof in 2014 will again bring this rollicking musical to life. Kerry Lambert is the choreographer creating the challenging dancing.

SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS is a Prather Touring production. Prather Touring is owned and operated by William T. Prather. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is the seventh national tour, previously touring Beehive, the 60s Musical in 2007, the 10th Anniversary tour of Footloose in 2008/2009, The Wedding Singer in 2010, All Shook Up in 2011, Blast in 2012 and Fiddler on the Roof in 2013.

Local brewers Seven Bro7hers and gin distillery Four Sis4ers are set to merge to form one big Salfordian alcohol outfit. You love to see it.

With Seven Bros already being a household name, operating out of four locations in Manchester alone, not to mention more and more sites opening up across the country and their beloved beers stocked in ASDA, Morrisons, Co-op, Booths and soon Aldi too, the brand just keeps getting bigger.

Now, the next step in that development will see the McAvoy brothers link up with their real-life sisters and their aptly named company, FOUR SIS4ERS Distillery , to form one big happy family business.

While many aware of the two companies’ connection always wondered whether it would happen, this link-up will finally put all 11 McAvoy siblings under one commercial roof, allowing customers and consumers access to a ‘one stop’ shop for craft beer, gin , rum and who knows what in the future.

The takeover will see a rebrand of the craft gin distillery aimed at bringing the portfolio in line with the brother’s lucrative core beers, targeting grocery buyers and convenience stores.

Inspired by their father’s home-brewing legacy, the company was founded in 2014 by the seven McAvoy brothers themselves: Guy, Keith, Luke, Daniel, Nathan, Kit, and Greg.

Following their success, the McAvoy sisters Kerry Collins, Hayley Robinson, Kate Haslam, and Lucy White then decided they wanted in on the action and launched SIS4ERS Distillery back in 2018.

With their own reputation growing exponentially, it seemed only natural to bring them on board. The merger will make SEVEN BRO7HERS BREWING CO the largest alcohol family in the industry. Try 55 direct relatives. Absolutely massive.

SEVEN BRO7HERS currently run successful beer houses in Middlewood Locks, MediaCityUK, Ancoats and, of course, their HQ, taproom and brewery in the heart of Salford .

Always looking to grow their portfolio — as exampled by the Four Sis4ers merger — they also opened their partnership bar at Manchester Airport ‘s new T2 Departure Lounge in July 2020, before planting their first flag on the rest of the UK in May 2021 with their new Beerhouse in the heart of Liverpool.

Together with the help of their sisters, who have already seen their success not only in day-to-day sales but with hosting gin tours and tastings, as well as bookable event spaces, the sky is the limit for the McAvoy family.

Dad would be proud.

In a gut-wrenching bit of news, former Rochdale AFC player and Manchester United academy product Joe Thompson has sadly been diagnosed with cancer for the third time.

Sharing the heartbreaking update on Friday, 12 April, Thompson, who previously represented the likes of Bury FC , Tranmere Rovers, Carlisle United, the 35-year-old has revealed that the recurring Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma has now spread to his lungs.

The ex- Dale midfielder also secured loan spells at Wrexham and Southport around a decade ago, but the cancer diagnosis tragically derailed his time at both clubs.

He ultimately decided to call time on his footballing career back in 2019 and after having twice recovered from the disease, he is now facing his third battle against cancer. Giving a moving interview with BBC Sport Manchester, he said explaining it to his kids has been the hardest part.

The father of two also sat down with his old club Man United , who came through the academy ranks alongside the likes of Tom Cleverley, Danny Drinkwater and more, confessing, “I don’t think you could walk this road alone”.

Thompson went on to say : “It’s far from ideal but I know that the support is here from the club. My family are imperative in my life and they are constantly helping me at the moment.

“I feel like once I have voiced it and got it off my chest, I don’t feel as suffocated as I felt. Obviously, bringing it to the football audience I am hoping that the support will be there as it has been not once, but twice before.”

He also stressed the importance of raising awareness, especially given this is his third stroke of misfortune, adding: “There are constant reminders and from the support you get, there are positive stories, so I feel morally obliged to be one of those that do that.”

The Thompson family have now set up a fundraising page, the description of which calls his story one of “resilience and hope”. We think that’s putting it lightly.

Reflecting on how his illness has already overshadowed his time as a father far too much, he explained that he is working with oncologists and scientists and “self-funding research to uncover the root cause of my recurring illness.”

Manchester Airport has revealed a shocking list of almost 400 items confiscated by security staff in just one morning.

And honestly, you won’t believe some of the things people’ve tried to take on a plane .

With the Easter break drawing to a close now across Greater Manchester , and children throughout the region getting ready to return to the classroom, Manchester Airport is urging all passengers travelling during the final few days of the school holidays to make sure they know the hand luggage rules before boarding the plane.

It comes after 22 pairs of scissors, eight toy guns, two blow torches, and even a couple of packs of darts, were just some of the goods confiscated at security gates in just one morning.

According to security staff, the most-confiscated item, by far, was the cigarette lighter – with 284 of them handed in over the course of the morning.

Passengers are permitted to carry one lighter with them, as long as it fits into a clear resealable plastic bag and contains under 100ml of liquid, but bringing through multiple lighters is not allowed, and this is what led to so many people having to turn them in.

As well as the lighters, scissors, toy guns, blow torches, and packs of darts, some of the other items confiscated on the morning include five multi-tools, four corkscrews, two hacksaws, 12 cans of deodorant, and even a hammer… yes, an actual hammer.

Two large soft drinks bottles, a bottle of shower gel, and a one-litre bottle of vodka were a few of the other shocking confiscations.

“We want passengers to feel like they’re beginning their holidays here at Manchester Airport,” commented Graham Matthews, who is Head of Terminal Security for Terminal 3 at Manchester Airport, on the list of confiscated items.

“Almost every passenger will wait for less than 15 minutes to get to security, so they can then get through and relax in the departure lounge within minutes of arriving here, but each time we have to pull a bag aside for a manual search, it takes several minutes.

“Every search adds up and can slow down the whole security process, not only for the passenger carrying a non-compliant item, but also for the passengers behind them in the queue.

These protections are available equally to everyone, regardless of sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

If you or an affiliated individual (see below for definition) otherwise qualify for assistance under SCCHA’s housing voucher programs, you cannot be denied admission or denied assistance because you are or have been a victim of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking. Protection does not give you faster access to housing or mean you will automatically be given a voucher because you’re a victim of domestic violence.
