Our trip was outstanding. Dean, Megan, and the rest of the crew are very knowledgeable about the region and constantly monitor conditions to provide the best possible experience at any given time. We saw an array of wildlife and awe inspiring scenery.

Being aboard the Discovery, a small vessel with a storied past, one feels immersed in, rather than removed from, the immediate environment. The crew is very attentive, and the food was fresh, creative, and delicious; beautifully presented and accompanied by a very nice selection of wine.

If you’re interested in an immersive experience with knowledgeable guides in an intimate setting I don’t believe you can do better than a trip with Discovery Voyages.

The trip of a lifetime!

The owners of the Discovery, Dean and Meg, were so accommodating and helpful. Dean got a sense for what the group wanted to do and tried to cater to everyone’s interest and activity level. The two guides, Phyllis and Hugh, were extremely knowledgeable and fun to be around. We did a lot, saw a lot, learned a lot, and in general had an amazing week. Meg worked her magic for three meals a day in the kitchen and the food was fantastic with lots of fresh seafood and accommodations for everyone’s dietary restrictions. I loved that there was a lot of quiet time to read or sit outside and take in the magnificent scenery. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone who is okay staying on a small boat.

Great adventure. Worth it!

I loved every minute of our adventure. The weather was less than desirable, but I don’t think we missed a thing. Our chef, Meg, was creative and patient. There were eleven of us, and she pleased everyone. The adventures, included kayaking, photographing amazing wildlife, walking among the glaciers, and learning do much about Prince William Sound. The nature aspect of this trip was beyond beautiful. As a side note, the group we were with was terrific. We all got along great, chatted the entire time, and played a memorable game. Would I do this again? In a minute.

A magical experience.

The Captain and Crew of the Discovery made us feel special during the entire voyage. Their knowledge of the region, the hidden coves, the history, and the culture, all made for a magical experience. I can truly say that this trip exceeded my already high expectations. My two sons and my father-in-law also joined and they were equally impressed.

The Best Voyage Imaginable

The entire crew (Dean,Meg,Erin & Will) were awesome. PWS is a beautiful but also immense region, so the decades of experience of these folks took us to locations little known to lesser mortals. The Discovery itself was a comfortable, if compact, ship. Fully equipped not only with kayaks, “Zodiacs “ & rain gear but also with cozy quarters and Megs great meals! With just 10 other guests, we developed warm and lasting friendships.

This was the trip of a lifetime. Not hyperbole, just truth. Every single staff person was amazing. Captain Dean not only piloted expertly, he was a fountain of information. Tori and Ashley were wonderful on all outings, sharing knowledge while still always making sure everyone of us were comfortable physically. Finally, Meg. Hmm, not enough words for her mastery in the kitchen. Thank you all for your expertise and care.

This trip was unbelievable

This trip was unbelievable! So exciting to watch the glaciers and so much wildlife. Just the experience of being on the boat in beautiful Prince William Sound surrounded by beauty night and day was a lifetime high point. The guides were so knowledgeable and patiently helpful. The food was outstanding. Captain Dean and his wife Meghan were wonderful people to travel with. You won’t find a better adventure.

A true adventure

Our voyage on the Discovery in July 2019 surpassed all expectations. Not being keen on big ship cruising, yet having a husband who is reluctant to rough it, a six day trip on this sturdy and surprisingly spacious vessel had to be the ideal solution.

The cabins are certainly small, but cosy, and I found a childish delight in waking each morning in a bunk with a porthole view onto a scene of exceptional and ever changing beauty as we cruised Prince William Sound.

From day one we were immersed in experiences that brought a sense of wonder and excitement. Each amazing day was followed by an even more amazing one. From visiting the kittywake colony and the haunts of salmon, sea lions and seals, to watching rafts of otters with their adorable babies, or an escort of Dall’s porpoises. From hiking in forest by a rushing meltwater stream, passing peat bogs and wild blueberries, to kayaking through ice fractured from nearby glaciers. From being treated to the spectacle of a calving glacier that spurred a rapid retreat (for which Captain Dean had been entirely prepared), to the highlight of a spontaneous swim in a sun-warmed copper blue lake in a giant rock bowl – magical! Not to mention the sightings of bears, whales and puffins.

Meals were generous, fresh and delicious, and our company friendly and fun. And while Meg and Dean kept us safe and well fed, Maria and Hugh kept us wonderfully well-informed. I loved every moment of it! And to my even greater delight, my husband loved it too.

Looking for nature and adventure on an Alaska cruise? Choose a smaller ship

As I rolled out of bed and looked out the sliding glass doors of my cabin to the wild coastline of one of the many remote inlets along Alaska's Inside Passage, I pondered the big decision of the day: kayaking, a Zodiac ride or both.

There was no reason to decide before breakfast, though. The weather could change on a dime, and kayaking and Zodiac teams would be launching directly off our small ship throughout the day. Technically, we had rotating small-group departure times, but the reality was everything was flexible.

If I decided to be lazy and simply enjoy the scenery from American Queen Voyages' new expedition ship, Ocean Victory , well, there were plenty of comfortable viewing options, both from the private balcony of my spacious cabin and public spaces throughout the 185-passenger ship.

But seriously, who wants to be lazy when you have the chance to explore such majestic surroundings up close and personal and with expert guides?

During my 10-day cruise from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Sitka, Alaska, I quickly came to appreciate the nature-oriented focus of small-ship Alaska cruising . Sure, the big cruise ships can take you around Alaska's famous Inside Passage with opportunities for flightseeing tours, zip line adventures and locally themed salmon bakes, but if you want your days to center around the majesty of Alaska's wilderness and to learn about native wildlife and culture, you need to seek out the smaller vessels.

Education on the water

I am attention span-challenged, meaning you'll rarely find me enjoying or paying much attention to a lecture like those offered on traditional and adventure cruises alike. It's a whole different game, though, when I am on the water, skimming the coastline, watching sea otters carry their young on their bellies, watching bald eagles perched for the hunt in the treetops above or navigating through huge chucks of glacial ice.

Did you know that if you pull a piece of glacial ice out of the water and kiss it, it is supposed to bring you luck? Or that many bald eagles drown because their talons are so long and hooked that if they snag a fish that is too heavy to lift from the water, they can't release it, so they get dragged down and die? That black bears can be white and ice can be blue, and ravens can mimic everything from the sound of dripping water to babies crying, even cats meowing?

I wouldn't have picked up these facts from a talk in a theater, but I learned them from Ocean Victory's expert guides while floating along secluded bays in Alaska.

The expedition team catered to every level of traveler, offering short excursions for the adventure-leery and longer kayaking outings for the more experienced.

Except for one day when winds and chop canceled kayaking, the expedition team was ready to launch, rain or shine, when we were anchored alone in the wilds.

One morning we set off in a steady light rain and fog, navigating around rafts of otters, watching a family of deer on the shoreline watch us, and of course, being on the constant lookout for bears.

Unfortunately, we missed one bear spotting by just five minutes. After a leisurely kayak one sunny afternoon, while we were still shedding our boots and water-logged pants, the expedition team leader announced over the ship's speaker that a big black bear was wandering the coast across from the boat.

As we scurried up top and grabbed binoculars, I realized the bear was right in a clearing we had passed just minutes before returning to the boat. Still, thanks to the abundance of spotting scopes and onboard binoculars (the latter found in every cabin and scattered through the ship), everyone who wanted to had an opportunity to watch the bear meander along the shoreline.

There were a few other memorable wildlife sightings throughout the week, including whales and a moose that decided to take a swim as a Zodiac passed. The expedition team members were expert spotters, and I'm sure I saw more wildlife on this trip thanks to their sharp eyes.

Nature-based tours

It wasn't just our ship's expedition team who introduced us to the natural wonders of this region, but the Alaskan locals we met when the ship came into port.

One of the highlights of the cruise was spending nearly four hours with Rob Schwartz and his son Teagen, who took a half-dozen of us from the port town of Petersburg, population around 3,000, to get a view of LeConte Glacier.

As we boarded their 13-passenger Point Retreat jet boat, Rob Schwartz looked over at a second boat loading passengers and cast a mischievous glance my way.

"No boat gets closer to the glacier than mine," he declared with a grin.

And he stayed true to his word.

With his son, Teagen, perched on the roof as a lookout, we spent nearly two hours navigating a dense field of breathtaking blue, white and clear icebergs, inching closer and closer to the majestic LeConte Glacier.

From the jet boat, we delighted at the sea lions piled up almost impossibly on top of each other to sunbathe on buoys that lined the port entrance. We laughed out loud as we passed one late-comer trying, unsuccessfully, to muscle his (or her) way onto the already overcrowded platform.

Not every animal sighting had a happy story, though. The lone young sea lion we saw clinging to a cliff near Petersburg was likely a scared survivor of a raft of sea lions eaten by a killer whale in the area a few days earlier, Schwartz told our group.

More importantly, our knowledgeable captain was true to his word about taking us close to the glacier. Occasionally we'd spot the second boat, forging ahead. But despite the huge chunks of ice that more than once sent us rocking, we didn't turn around until well after the second boat had called it a day.

A comfortable home base

But the biggest lesson from my small-ship cruise was that adventure and luxury don't have to be mutually exclusive in Alaska.

Between outings, we had gourmet meals, fine wine, even fancy hot chocolate handed to us as we got off our kayaks and Zodiacs. After spending time off the ship, I could shed my wet clothes and don a fluffy bathrobe to relax in a cabin that was spacious by even large-ship standards.

Even the ship's large mudroom was upscale, with open-locker-style cabinets for each cabin to store rain gear and boots (provided by the ship) and lots of room and benches for suiting up.

My favorite spaces were the two large lounges with huge windows -- one on the same level as the dining room, library and theater-style reception hall, and another with a bar on the top deck -- and the sun deck, which had an infinity pool and two hot tubs. Indoors and out, I could hang out in comfortable, elegant spaces while I admired the passing scenery and scanned the shoreline for wildlife.

Who knew that a floating contemporary boutique hotel would be the perfect complement to Alaska's great outdoors?

Sailing the Inside Passag e - shaped by huge glaciers millions of years ago, the Inside Passage stretches from Puget Sound, Washington, through British Columbia and into the Gulf of Alaska. The Inside Passage delivers stunning and ever-changing scenery. Glacier Bay National Park - Marvel at the awe-inspiring scenery as you cruise Glacier Bay, the largest UNESCO-protected biosphere in the world. With some luck, you’ll see brightly-colored puffins, mountain goats, eagles, bears, and sea lions, all with a stunning backdrop and the amazing sounds of nature.

Chichagof Island & Baranof Island - Just a couple of the many  Alaska Islands and both a nature lover's dream, Chichagof Island is home to porpoises, seals, whales, and the largest population of bears per square meter in the world. Baranof Island features hidden coves, hot springs, and an amazing array of wildlife calling this island home.

Tracy Arm - Prepare for breathtaking scenery as you cruise Tracy Arm. Located 45 miles south of Juneau, Tracy Arm is a narrow fjord extending over 30 miles long. With over a quarter of the area covered in ice and encompassing some of Alaska’s largest glaciers, Tracy Arm offers views of stunning waterfalls and sheer rock walls over a mile high and is also home to hundreds of harbor seals, mountain goats, eagles, and passing whales.

Ketchikan - Known as the ‘Salmon Capital of the world,’ Ketchikan is a city rich in history. The area started off by building a fish saltery, followed by a salmon cannery, mining copper and gold, and even supplying timber for the construction of WWII airplanes. Now, Ketchikan’s main industry is tourism. It's easy to see why with museums, libraries, restaurants, and amazing wildlife sightings such as mountain goats, black bears, sea otters, humpback whales, orcas, and seals.

Sitka - Another city rich in history, Sitka, located on the southern part of Baranof Island, is where the Russian flag was lowered, and the US flag was raised after the US purchased Alaska from the Russians in 1867.

Best time to cruise Alaska

The best time to cruise Alaska is between April and September, with the high season in June and July, mainly because of the warmer weather and longer days. The beginning of April and end of September are typically the low season but offer the best time to see the Northern Lights because of the shorter days. April and May also offer stunning scenery as the mountain peaks are still covered in snow.

Mid-April until the end of August offers the best time to see whales, particularly Orca and Humpback whales. However, it doesn’t matter which time of year you choose between April and September, as amazing wildlife sightings are a given, whether it’s mountain goats, black bears, harbor seals, sea otters, or bald eagles, couple that with the stunning Alaska landscape and you’re sure to have an adventure cruise to remember.

Where do Alaska cruises depart from?

The departure port for your Alaska cruise varies depending on the itinerary, but the most common departures are below;

Ketchikan - On Revillagigedo Island, Alaska Airlines provides daily flights from Seattle . It is also possible to get to Ketchikan via sea with the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS), which has connections from the US and Canada, although to get from Washington to Ketchikan takes around 3-4 days!

Juneau - There are 2 ways to get to Juneau: air or sea. Alaska Airlines offers daily flights year-round from Seattle or Anchorage, and Delta Airlines offers seasonal flights from Seattle to Juneau. The other option to get to Juneau is by the state-run ferry, the AMHS.

Petersburg - Alaska Airlines offers twice-daily flights from Washington, Seattle, and Anchorage and the option to get to Petersburg via the AMHS.

Sitka - With links from Seattle, Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and Ketchikan, Alaska Airlines offers daily flights to Sitka. There is also the option to go via ferry, which can take 3-4 days.

Seattle - As a major US city, Seattle offers numerous ways to get there, from planes and trains to trams; there are plenty of options to get to Seattle.

Be sure to check your itinerary beforehand, as different routes can offer different departure/arrival options. Itineraries vary from round trip departures, for example, Juneau to Juneau, or one way, such as Seattle to Juneau and Sitka to Ketchikan. Which type you choose can depend on whether you intend to incorporate further land-based options at either end of your trip. Also worth considering is a (re)positioning cruise where the boats move from operating in one area/country to another and can offer a unique trip normally not part of regular itineraries. Whatever your route, it is recommended that you get to your departure location at least 1 day in advance to be ready for your Alaska small-ship adventure cruise.

Alaska cruise tips

Before you head off on your amazing Alaska Small Ship cruise, below is some general advice and tips to ensure your trip runs smoothly;

What to expect on an Alaskan Cruise - Alaskan cruises generally promise adventure, excitement, and the beauty of southeast Alaska. On board, you can expect comfortable rooms, fine Alaskan cuisine, and new friends for life. Days will generally start with a hearty breakfast to set up your day, followed by hiking, whale watching, bird-watching along coastal river trails or meeting the locals. Enjoy a hot chocolate or hot toddy to warm you up through the day, and relax in the evening with a glass of wine at dinner. Most Alaska cruises are casual, so no need to dress up for dinner.

Plan ahead - Most spaces on Alaska cruises sell out 6-9 months in advance, so to avoid disappointment, book early so you can guarantee your space. Mid-April to the beginning of May and the end of August to mid-September offer the most affordable time to go to Alaska, where you can save $400+ compared to traveling in June or July.

Arrive early - As mentioned earlier, arriving a day in advance is a good idea to ensure you’re on your cruise on time. As most Alaska cruise ship departure ports require a short flight, allowing time for delays is a good idea.

Choosing the right trip - Which type of trip you choose depends on personal preference, but all Alaskan cruises will offer a great experience in this remote region. Most boats have put a lot of effort into scheduling the itineraries, so no matter which one you pick, you will have a memorable experience. Alaska itineraries are usually 7, 8, or 10 days, depending on your chosen trip. What to pack - The Alaskan cruise season takes place between April - September, leading into and out of the summer months. Are cruises cold? The average temperatures are between 55f-65f (12-18c) and can drop by around 5 degrees at night, so clothing appropriate to these temperatures is required. Rainfall can be quite high in southeast Alaska, so a good waterproof jacket is also a good idea. Many Alaska cruises involve hiking, so you will also need a good pair of comfortable hiking shoes or boots, and sunglasses are a necessity during the summer months, particularly to protect your eyes from the glare of the water. Most Alaska cruise ships will have binoculars available, but if you have your own, bring them so you don’t have to wait for a pair to become free or share.

Alaska Travel Advice - Alaska is a US state, so if you’re traveling from outside the US, you will need a valid passport with at least 6 months left on it. The whole trip was great. My only negative was that I had hoped to do some kayaking and/or spend more time out in the DIB - the advertising led me to believe we would do a lot more of this! To us the cabin was fine but some people might find it a bit small. The crew, guides etc were all fabulous; food was terrific; bar was fantastic; boat was very comfortable; information provided was also great. Shore excursions were always informative and interesting; lovely to get to the areas the big boats don't go!! Why would anyone ever do a big boat cruise??

Help me choose: which Alaska Cruise is right for me?

Alaska's impressive southern coastlines contain hordes of island archipelagos, deep fjords and ancient glaciers. Nearly all of the area is roadless, so seafaring vessels, including cruise ships, are a popular way for visitors to experience these pristine areas.

Large cruise companies sail Alaska's Inside Passage from Seattle , Washington and Vancouver , and on through the Gulf of Alaska to Seward or Whittier. In between, passengers usually stop in Ketchikan , Juneau and Skagway , and then sail up College Fjord to see glaciers stretching their icy fingers into the sea. You'll see plenty of stunning scenery along the way but not up close – for most cruisers, it's more than enough to satisfy.

Smaller cruises max out at around 200 passengers and can nose into Southeast Alaska's nooks and crannies, launching skiffs and kayaks from their lower decks for an immersive shore visit full of exploration. These vessels may not stop in local ports, instead anchoring at night and offering guests the chance to hike a remote shoreline, whale-watch from a kayak or attend a presentation by indigenous artisans. If any ports are visited, they're likely to be smaller communities like Wrangell, Sitka, Petersburg and Yakutat.

Additionally, with the Northwest Passage now open to marine traffic, the northwestern city of Nome is a regular port of call for higher-end, midsize cruise lines to expose passengers to the rural reaches of coastal Alaska. The Aleutian Island city of Unalaska is also on some boutique cruise line itineraries, so check carefully that the region that sparks your interest.

Which part of Alaska should I choose to cruise?

For an overview of Alaska The standard Inside Passage cruise between Vancouver or Seattle and Seward or Whittier is an excellent choice, boasting beautiful scenery and the chance to experience a route taken by steamships of the late 1800s. You’ll get a snapshot of the Tongass National Forest , glaciers and the occasional whale or bear, but not up close unless you’re on a specific shore excursion. Holland America, Cunard and Viking all have cruises that fit this itinerary.

Taking a deep dive into Alaska’s coastal regions   Book a small ship cruise between Sitka, Ketchikan, and Juneau for a week or longer in the nooks and crannies of southeast Alaska. You’ll hike where there are no trails, paddle without another human in sight, and get to know the traditional lands of Alaska’s Coastal Native tribes. We like Alaskan Dream Cruises, UnCruise Adventures and Lindblad Expeditions for smaller, more sustainable cruises.

To discover Alaska’s rich history You can’t skip Ketchikan, Juneau or Skagway on an itinerary. Juneau is the state capital and a former mining community. Ketchikan once was a major player in the timber industry and has a sordid past steeped in bootlegging and brothels. Skagway was a jumping-off point for the Klondike Gold Rush beyond Chilkoot Pass and has an old railroad to prove it. All three cities are often on large ship itineraries.

Explore Alaska’s most remote coastal areas Consider a luxury midsize (or smaller) cruise to places like Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands or to the northwestern city of Nome. Both combine a look at the rugged, raw coastlines with time spent on shore in towns with few frills. Weather can often be cold, rainy and windy, but if you want a unique adventure in Alaska, check out the itineraries from Hurtigruten.

When should I go?

Depending on the cruise line, sailings begin in late April and continue through to early October. The most dependable weather typically appears in July and August, but that's also the most popular (and expensive) time; pick a trip earlier or later in the season for cheaper passage and shore excursions.

For spring and fall passengers, know that temperatures will be cooler than you might expect and variable types of precipitation, including snow showers, aren't unusual. In the summer, it's still cool on deck and near glaciers, so don't expect a lot of outdoor pool time or sunbathing on board.

If spotting wildlife is a priority, consider cruising during the salmon runs, when bears are most active and can be spotted from the decks of the ship. Humpback whales often follow schools of herring and other small fish during the summer and can be seen anytime between May and September before they migrate to Hawaii or Mexico .

How do I know my cruise line is operating sustainably?

While all travel has environmental and cultural impacts, cruising leaves its mark to varying degrees on Alaska's fragile ecosystems. The average large cruise ship can have a carbon footprint greater than 12,000 cars and produce up to a ton of trash each day. While there can be a positive economic impact on ports of call, a small community visited by 15,000 people per day during sailing season can intrinsically change.

The industry's trade group Cruise Line International Association (CLIA) touts a desire for "conscious cruising." They have guidelines for water conservation and upgrades to heating, air-conditioning and ventilation, with a goal for ships to be net zero by 2050. There is also a focus on respecting the cultural traditions of destinations through cooperative regenerative tourism that preserves a community's unique history, culture and values.

What kinds of activities can we experience?

Onshore activities differ depending on the size and style of the cruise. Traditional excursions are created to fit a specific number of people, all of whom come from the ships and are expected to be in port for a specific time. They provide an overview of Alaska's history, culture, recreation and industry, and don't offer much of a personal touch.

Smaller boutique cruises strive to immerse their guests in the wild Alaska they've researched and desire to experience. Trips to shore rarely involve large port cities except for embarking and disembarking – instead, they drop kayaks in the water from the ship or use a rubber skiff to reach a deserted shoreline for a hike. The communities they visit are usually smaller, like Petersburg, Wrangell or Haines.

Need-to-know before you go

Plan for wet weather Alaska’s southeastern region is part of a rainforest, where wet conditions are the norm even in summer. Bring waterproof rain gear, sturdy shoes, a hat and gloves to stay warm and dry.

Know your physical limits If mobility or other health issues may affect your ability to enjoy a cruise to the fullest, consider traveling with a larger operator. These companies are well-versed in accessibility and have made accommodations for those with mobility needs. Smaller ships are full of trip hazards and watertight door jambs and require bending and stepping up or down to access activities like kayaking or skiff rides.

Plan your own shoreside activities There is no requirement to book excursions or activities through the cruise line. If a more independent style of exploration is your thing, feel free to do your own research ahead of time or visit each port of call’s visitor bureau upon arrival. Just be sure to adhere strictly to the ship’s boarding time. 

Look to shoulder season sailings Not only will you often receive a significant discount, you’ll also be able to witness Alaska’s seasonal transitions and fewer crowds at ports of call.

Know what "all-inclusive" really means:  Drill down into the details of your cruise and ask questions about meals, alcoholic beverages, activities and shore trips. It may be that a smaller cruise line will include everything at one price.

The ferry is a great idea......it would really work for your short trip, with no passport required......

The sailing from Bellingham, WA usually leaves on Friday early evening, stops in several ports along the way (usually only for a couple hours each place) and arrives in Juneau at the crack of dawn on Mondays.......no car needed for the ferry trip, but rent one in Juneau for the 1-2 days you will be there.......it will really add to the comfort of the trip for your older folks and give you the flexibility to see things if the weather heads south......it will rain in Sept, so do bring rain gear.....

Neither Holland America or Princess had a cruise (that I could find) that did not included either Victoria or Vancouver.

Have you looked at maps of cruises up the west coast? At some point in time you will be in international waters, US waters and Canadian waters.

Anchorage is a port for very few cruises (3 this season). I think only one more this season.

I might be confused and am thinking you are looking for an Alaskan cruise ; but I guess it's possible you are looking to fly into Anchorage/ Juneau , do a vacation there that includes a day cruise ????

If on any vessel passing through Canadian waters, and they will not be stepping on land in Canada, there is no need for a Visa for Canada.

Small Ships Flourish In Alaska

Alaska has long been a popular destination for fans of small-ship cruising. Beginning in the early 1980s and continuing into the 1990s, companies such as Lindblad Expeditions and UnCruise Adventures, along with now-defunct lines like Alaska Sightseeing/Cruise West and Glacier Bay Cruiseline, helped to popularize the niche. Today, a number of different brands serve this burgeoning market, each offering a distinct small-ship experience and a range of itineraries.

The traditional appeal of small ships is their ability to go where the big ships can’t. Small ships get closer to shore, maximizing wildlife-viewing opportunities. They also are more intimate and immersive, said UnCruise Adventures . “Fewer passengers result in a more close-knit community on board, allowing for personalized service and attention from the crew,” the line explained, adding, “Small ships tend to have a smaller ecological footprint, which is crucial in preserving the pristine nature of Alaska.”

Altogether, there are some 17 vessels spread mainly over four small-ship cruise lines. Many are in expansion mode, offering new itineraries and new destinations for Alaska-bound travelers.

Alaskan Dream Cruises

The line is introducing a nine-day “Ice of the Inside Passage” itinerary for 2024 aboard the 49-passenger Baranof Dream visiting seven different Southeast Alaska glaciers up close, with the chance to see five more glaciers from a distance. The cruise will sail from Sitka to Glacier Bay National Park and Juneau, and then visit the Haida community of Kasaan, before concluding in Ketchikan.

The company is Alaska’s only Indigenous-owned cruise line, run by the Allen family of Sitka, who are of Tlingit descent. Five itineraries of six to nine days are available for 2024 aboard four ships carrying 40 to 80 passengers. One additional vessel – the 12-passenger Kruzof Explorer, a former Bering Sea crab-fishing boat converted for expedition cruising – is available for smallgroup charters. ADC’s trips focus on kayaking and hiking in secluded wilderness areas with an emphasis on cultural immersion.

American Cruise Lines

The company is adding new national parks cruise-tours to its Alaska offerings in 2024, which combine guided explorations in Denali National Park and Kenai Fjords National Park along with smallship cruising in Glacier Bay National Park. The seven-day land portion of these 16- or 19-day itineraries travels from Fairbanks to Juneau, where passengers board their ship for nine or 12 days of cruising the Inside Passage with stops in Skagway, Sitka, Petersburg and Wrangell.

American’s sole ship in Alaska is the 170-passenger American Constellation, which will sail on three different 2024 itineraries: a nineday “Southeast Alaska” cruise roundtrip from Juneau; a 12-day “Alaska Explorer Cruise,” also roundtrip from Juneau; and a 16-day “Alaska Inside Passage” cruise one-way between Seattle and Juneau. The line focuses on traditional port-to-port cruises, which makes it somewhat unique among Alaska’s smallship operators, and includes complimentary hotel stays, port charges and gratuities in its fares.

Lindblad Expeditions

Demand for its smallship cruises is so strong, Lindblad has added departures on its 2024 Southeast Alaska itineraries. These include a mix of longer itineraries that cover the entire length of the Inside Passage and shorter cruises that explore the hidden channels and uninhabited corners of the Alaska panhandle. Of special note is “A Remarkable Journey” to Alaska, British Columbia and Haida Gwaii,” a 15-day itinerary that spends four days in Haida Gwaii – the ancestral territory of the Haida Nation. Lindblad has secured special access to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, where passengers learn from Haida interpreters about their Native culture and have the opportunity to explore these remote islands.

Lindblad offers a wide variety of port-to-port itineraries combined with wilderness activities led by a team of naturalists and other experts. In addition to its four coastal-type vessels carrying 62 to 100 passengers, Lindblad operates expedition ships in the Arctic.

UnCruise Adventures

The line is plying new waters in 2024 and 2025. In May, it will launch its inaugural cruises of Prince William Sound. The eight-day “Prince William Sound Explorer” itinerary sails roundtrip from Whittier aboard the 36-passenger Safari Explorer. One highlight of this cruise is the chance to call at Cordova, a remote fishing village on the eastern side of the sound that has caught the attention of cruise ships lately. The itinerary will be repeated next year, along with the company’s first-ever cruises to the Aleutian Islands, sailing for 11 days between Whittier and Dutch Harbor via Kodiak Island.

UnCruise fields Alaska’s largest smallship fleet with seven vessels carrying 22 to 88 passengers. As its name suggests, it focuses on outdoor activities in hidden coves and secluded bays for a different kind of cruise experience. Eleven itineraries are scheduled for this year and next; some departures are sold as adult-only or family-only cruises.

Expedition Options

Besides Alaska’s U.S.-flagged coastal-style ships, several foreign-flagged expedition vessels visit the 49th state during the cruise season.

While they are somewhat larger than their coastal counterparts, they still can be considered small – especially when compared with the 4,000-passenger megaships sailing in the region.

Such choices for this upcoming Alaska season include HX’s 530-passenger Roald Amundsen (the only hybrid-powered cruise ship operating in coastal Alaskan waters), Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ 230-passenger HANSEATIC spirit, Lindblad Expeditions 238-passenger National Geographic Resolution and PONANT’s yachtlike, 264-passenger Le Soleal.

Although they are often built for polar exploration, these vessels also cruise the more temperate waters of the Gulf of Alaska and Inside Passage with naturalists and other scientists aboard.

Are guests visiting you in Alaska? Here are a few easy options for quick journeys or easy day trips.

Ever since moving to Alaska decades ago, friends and relatives call or write to have me help them plan their trip. That often includes crashing on our couch and picking them up from their midnight flight.

Start planning now for your guests’ arrival. There are hundreds of options for your visitors, but here are a few plug-and-play day trips or quick journeys to get started.

On the first day, get your visitors up early and drive them up to Flat Top. Depending on their energy level and the snowpack, you can take a short stroll from the parking lot to the overlook, head up to the top of the mountain, or hike up Powerline Pass for some stunning alpine views.

Then, take them to some of Anchorage’s coolest places, rain or shine. That includes the Anchorage Museum, the Alaska Native Heritage Center, the Alaska Botanical Gardens and the Alaska Zoo. Let them buy you lunch!

For day two, consider a trip south to Girdwood for a ride on the tram at Alyeska Resort. It’s always a hit. Long-time Girdwood enthusiasts will insist on a stop at the Bake Shop for a big sweet roll.

After your tram ride, continue heading down the highway to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. Check out the bears, the Musk Oxen, the elk, the porcupines, the bison and all the other critters.

Finally, take the cutoff to Whittier. Don’t go through the tunnel, though. That’s another full-day excursion to go on the 26 Glacier Cruise. Instead, head for the Portage Glacier Cruise for a journey on the MV Ptarmigan to the face of the glacier.

For day three, head north to Talkeetna. I was there yesterday for lunch at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, and Denali is still there — bigger than ever. A couple of flightseeing planes landed as I munched on a sandwich with some friends in the visitor industry. The flight up and around Denali is a fun thing to do, especially if your pilot lands on a glacier.

If you’re more comfortable at ground level, go for a jetboat ride with Mahay’s Jetboat Adventures. Just after launching from the dock on the Talkeetna River, there’s a great photo opportunity of Denali when they turn the boat and head up the Susitna River.

My favorite pizza in town is at Denali Brewing’s location close to the Parks Highway. Of course, there’s also a great selection of their beer.

The flightseeing trips are weather-dependent. If you can’t fly, head back to town, but take the cutoff to Palmer over Hatcher Pass. This is a fabulous drive through some incredible alpine country. The last time I saw a bear ... from a comfortable distance. Once you’re over the summit, you’ll see the Independence Mine historical site on the left. Make a stop. Stretch your legs and check out the old mine buildings. In fact, they’re still mining in the valley.

For day number four you can head back down the Seward Highway to either Seward or Whittier for a glacier and wildlife cruise.

Trips further afield include overnight accommodations, which require a little more advance planning.

A trip to Homer is fun. The Homer Spit is one of our family’s favorite beaches in Alaska. Be sure and make plans to head across the bay. Ride with Mako’s Water Taxi and take a trip to hike to Grewingk Glacier. Pack a lunch from La Baleine Cafe , located near Mako’s office at Homer’s small boat harbor.

Take the Seldovia Bay Ferry from Homer over to Seldovia for the day. The town is walkable — and you can hike the Otter Bahn trail to Outside Beach for some beautiful views.

The Danny J sails each day from Homer’s small boat harbor to Halibut Cove, where guests can enjoy lunch or dinner at the Saltry restaurant. The restaurant looks over the cove — and it’s a great way to spend a day on the water.

Combine a trip to Fairbanks with a ride on the Alaska Railroad. The train leaves each morning headed north. It’s an all-day excursion. But it’s a fun ride. The train slows down going over the Hurricane Bridge, where you can look down into the gulch, nearly 300 feet below. This is the railroad’s 101st season.

You’ll need a car to get around Fairbanks. Don’t miss a visit to the Museum of the North on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. On the drive over, you might see some migrating waterfowl at Creamer’s Field .

Check out Explore Fairbanks’ website for a list of great things to see and do. Then fly back home to Anchorage on Alaska Airlines. One way on the train is enough!

Look east for one of my favorite adventures: to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Take the scenic drive up the Glenn Highway from Anchorage through the Matanuska River Valley. Once you get to Glennallen, take a right and head down the Richardson Highway to Valdez. Take the cutoff to Chitina past Copper Center. After you cross the Copper River, you’re officially inside the nation’s largest national park. The McCarthy Road is one of Alaska’s classic 35-miles-per-hour highways, along with the Denali Highway and the Taylor Highway. Most of it is gravel.

Be sure and let your hosts know when you expect to arrive in McCarthy. Some lodges are before the bridge over the Kennicott River — and they can give you directions. Otherwise, park at the bridge, walk across and get a shuttle on the other side. You can stay up at the historic mining district at Kennecott, about five miles north of McCarthy. Or, there are several options right in McCarthy.

You also can skip the drive on the gravel McCarthy Road and fly back with Wrangell Mountain Air from Chitina. The 60-mile flight is one of the best flightseeing tours around. The pilot often will fly up through Fourth of July Pass and come out over the Kennicott Glacier for million-dollar views of the whole valley, including the historic Kennecott Mining District. The word “Kennecott” is alternatively spelled with an “e” or an “i.” There’s a whole story behind the various spellings.

After spending a couple of days in the McCarthy area, head back to the Richardson Highway and drive south to Valdez. The drive up over Thompson Pass and then down past the waterfalls in Keystone Canyon is spectacular! Plan on spending the night in Valdez to be on time for the early-morning departure of the Alaska State Ferry. Be sure and confirm the schedule well in advance.

Roll your car onto the ferry and sail away to Whittier. This is the ultimate shortcut for your return to Anchorage! Once you arrive in Whittier, it’s just a one-hour drive back to Anchorage. Plus, there’s no fee to drive out through the tunnel!
