All The Best Lake Tahoe Snowmobile Tours
Snowmobiling in Lake Tahoe
Snowmobiling through the woods has a knack for making the wilderness feel as it should. There’s no lift lines or snack bars; it’s just still, snowy and endless. Poetic as it all may be, none of this overshadows the fact that snowmobiles go fast. Real fast. And let’s be honest—aprés-ing your quiet morning by the fire with a punch of adrenaline is never a bad way to vacation. So, it’s settled. You want to go snowmobiling in Lake Tahoe. Now you just need to know where you can do it.
Snowmobiling in South Lake Tahoe
Snowmobile by day, steakhouse by night? South Lake Tahoe has truly mastered the balance of outdoor recreation and modern comfort. Here, an afternoon cruise along a snowy ridge and sunset dinner reservations go hand-in-hand.
Zephyr Cove Snowmobiles
A favorite for snowmobile tours in South Lake Tahoe, Zephyr Cove Resort offers both a beginner-friendly tour and an advanced, backcountry ride. The beginner tour is, well, kinda perfect. Families, couples and groups of friends looking for a low-key ride will get everything they’re looking for and more.
A mellow cruise through the woods leads you to a ridge overlooking the entire Lake Tahoe basin. You’ll feel on top of the world—and at 9,000 feet elevation, you almost will be. Pause for photos and to maybe shed a tear or two (it really is that beautiful) before winding back down the mountain. Along the way, your helpful, local guide will make sure you’re warm, well looked after, and learning all about Tahoe’s native landscape.
Tours meet at Zephyr Cove, an easy journey from anywhere in South Lake Tahoe. If you didn’t pack ski clothes, they offer affordable rentals at the shop.
Lake Tahoe Adventures
If backcountry trails get you more excited than lake views, opt for a snowmobile tour with Lake Tahoe Adventures . Tours depart from their office in Meyers and head south to Hope Valley. Here, groomed backcountry trails loop and wind across meadows, peaks and valleys offering a taste of the area’s most pristine mountain landscapes.
Lake Tahoe Adventures offers two snowmobile tour options, with the Ultimate Snowmobile Ride catering to more experienced riders with off-trail powder chasing and smaller groups. The Summit Tour promises a more mellow ride with equally epic sights.
While it’s tough to beat lake views, Hope Valley can give you a true taste of the Sierras. It’s a bit of a no-so-secret secret that it’s the place to score epic outdoor adventures.
Tahoe Snowmobiles
Okay, okay let’s take a step back. If you’re short on time or simply not ready to weave through the Aspens, Tahoe Snowmobiles ’ circle track is your dream. Follow the mild, groomed track ‘round and ‘round for a taste of all that horsepower in a user-friendly setting.
You won’t get the views or that wilderness-being-wild feeling, but there’s still plenty to love about this snowmobiling option. Re: it’s walking distance from the stateline, available in 30 minute sessions and there’s a fun sledding hill on the same lot. In other words, it’s the ultimate family-friendly snow day activity.
Book a 30-minute snowmobile ride with Tahoe Snowmobiles ! A 5-minute walk from the Stateline casinos in South Lake Tahoe, their groomed track is the perfect place to get a taste of the action.
North Tahoe Snowmobiling
Ever wonder if the views from the north shore or south shore are better? Guess you’re just going to have to book a snowmobile tour in each of ‘em. We’re a little jealous.
Lake Tahoe Snowmobiling
Staying on Tahoe’s north shore? Book a tour with Lake Tahoe Snowmobiling for unique lake views and groomed trails through the National Forest. Explore the area around North Lake Tahoe’s favorite ski resorts, like Squaw, Northstar and Alpine, stopping for gorgeous lake views at 9,000 feet.
Lake Tahoe Snowmobiling offers just one, all skill-levels, 2-hour tour along Brockway Summit. The tour starts just a few miles north of Tahoe Vista and Kings Beach where your experienced guide teaches you the basics before heading up the mountain. With more than 40 years in the business, these guys truly know north Tahoe’s backcountry trails like the back of their hand. They’ll have you to incredible views in minutes.
If you’re missing anything for the journey, you can rent gear at the main office.
Coldstream Adventures
Although technically in Truckee, the snowmobile tours at Coldstream Adventures are a great option for anyone staying in north Lake Tahoe. Located just 15 minutes from Tahoe City and 25 minutes from Kings Beach, it’s both a practical option as well as an always appreciated excuse to day trip north.
They offer a 2-hour, all levels backcountry tour that takes you up, down and around Truckee’s Coldstream Canyon. Your guide will walk you through the basics before the 2,000 foot climb to the best snow stashes, views and trails. If you’re with a group of four or more, upgrade to a private tour for custom itineraries and meetup times.
Tahoe Snowbike Rental
Somewhere between a dirt bike and a snowmobile, there’s the snowbike. A combination of all the things you love about dirt biking—agility, speed, easy steering—and what you love most about snowmobiling (fresh powder, obviously.) A spicy twist on the traditional snowmobile ride, snowbikes are a majorly epic way to get into Tahoe’s backcountry.
At the moment there’s only one place around Lake Tahoe offering snowbike rentals—and that’s Tahoe Snowbike Rental in Truckee. Equipped with brand new Timbersled snowbikes, they offer 2-hour custom guided tours based on your experience. If you’re even slightly into dirt bikes, this is pretty much guaranteed to be your new favorite sport.
We promise there’s nothing quite like a guided snowbike tour with Tahoe Snowbike Rentals . Fast turns, fresh powder—it’s as good as it gets.
Snowmobile Trail Guide
There’s actually not much action for self-guided snowmobile rentals in the area. But if you happen to trailer up your own sleds, you’ll want to check out this map of Lake Tahoe’s snowmobile trails and areas . It’s your best resource for staying safe and out of trouble. Turn to it for a map of Sno-Parks and parking areas, groomed trails and snowmobile boundaries.
The whole basin is filled with knowledgable guides, stupid-good views and fun trails that show off the best of the Sierras. All of the above providers will keep you safe and happy. So, as you embark on your Lake Tahoe snowmobiling adventure, all you really need to know is this: bring the balaclava.

Along with their family, they are eager to continue the tradition of great customer service, and back country snowmobiling, that their predecessors established.

Snowmobiling In The High Sierra
Alex Silgalis
It's no surprise that snowmobiling is an important part of winter fun in the Sierra Nevada. Here's a sampling of where to rev up that engine & enjoy the snow motorized style.
Family-friendly Activities • Motorsports • Snowmobiling
Eastern Sierra • Lake Tahoe • Western Sierra
The thrill of adrenaline. The unparalleled beauty of a snowy alpine scenery. As soon as you hop onto a “motor sled” and zip out into the great Sierra Nevada range, you’ll understand why so many do it. Combine the excitement of a high-speed ride and a tour this winter by snowmobiling in the High Sierra. Here’s a glimpse into where you can enjoy the High Sierra of the motorized kind.
Once-In-A-Lifetime Views Of Lake Tahoe
For those wanting to catch a glimpse of Lake Tahoe that very few get in the winter months, the guided tour with Zephyr Cove Snowmobile Center is the perfect choice. Departing from the shores of Lake Tahoe, you’ll cruise through majestic meadows and slowly ascend up to 9,000’. At the peak of the climb, the “million-dollar” view to the cobalt waters famous in the Sierra will open up before your eyes. Want more? Weather permitting, you can enjoy an evening/night ride as the full moon paints the landscape with an iridescent glow rarely seen anywhere else.

Ride The Snow Highway
In the summer, one of California’s best kept secrets offers up amazing scenery like no other scenic byway can. As the Sierra Nevada’s winter storm train arrives, Ebbetts Pass shuts down for the season. But that doesn’t mean you can’t see the sights under a blanket of snow. Instead, you need to jump onto your snowmobile (or rent one from Bear Valley Snowmobile ) and zip along 15 miles of groomed trails through a winter wonderland to reach the pass. Come see why many call this region the best snowmobiling California has to offer .
Explore Truckee’s Backcountry
While there’s a vast assortment of skiing to be had at your doorstep, did you know that just outside the historic town of Truckee-Tahoe there’s a vast network of snowmobiling trails to discover? Explore the 200 miles of groomed terrain that encompasses 650 square miles with one of many outfitters . From wide open meadows for playing to gorgeous vistas of the Sierra Nevada, let’s just say you won’t be bored.
See The Eastern Sierra On A Snowmobile
California’s Eastern Sierra isn’t home to just world class skiing. It has a bounty of outdoor recreation that rivals any winter vacation destination including snowmobiling . For snow machine thrill seekers that own their own sleds, venture to the Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area . Covering a whopping seven THOUSAND acres of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, you’ll find enough elbow room to challenge yourself AND see spectacular vistas of the region. For those that don’t have a snowmobile, take a guided tour with DJ’s Snowmobile Adventure at Smokey Bear Flat. Their operation connects you to over 100 miles of groomed trails and also offers self-guided tours and rentals.
“Mammoth” Riding In Mammoth Lakes
A little further south in the town of Mammoth Lakes is yet another vast area that you can play in the snow via snow machine. With an average of thirty feet of snow annually, 80 miles of groomed trails, and 75,000 acres of expanse to play in, you’ll have more than enough to experience snowmobiling at its best . Don’t own one? No problem. Mammoth Lakes offers guided tours that are as short as an hour or up to three hours.
Yosemite’s Fun
Although you can’t hop on a motorized vehicle within the national park, just outside of its borders you can dip your toe into some wintry fun in the Sierra National Forest via Sierra Nevada Motor Sports . Depending on how much snow is on the ground, you’ll either hop onto a snow track or take off on the appropriate off-road vehicle for what’s out there.
If you think sitting by a crackling fire while sipping hot cocoa and gazing out at the wintry landscape is the best way to enjoy the season, think again. With more than 300 days of sunshine and a deep snowpack, the High Sierra were designed for snowy-time fun. So, grab your helmet, rev up that engine and enjoy snowmobiling in the High Sierra.

People don’t generally see California as a place to go skiing or snowmobiling, but there is so much to this state than beaches, famous marinas , and coastal mountains, and sunshine. For example, here you find the Sierra Nevada Mountains, which means Snowy Mountains. It’s just one of the many places to check out and offers 30+ snowmobile trails to travel along.
California’s population runs around 25 million, but it has the lowest per capita snowmobile registration rate – just 11,000 registered vehicles. As a visitor to the state, you’d have plenty of wide-open space to check out that includes both easy and difficult terrain that will take every bit of your breath away without so much as a worry about running into other snowmobilers.
Let’s take a closer look at the most popular snowmobile trails in California!
12 Best Places to Snowmobile in California
1. bear valley.
Bear Valley is located between Yosemite and Tahoe and is full of natural, historical spots. Not far from here is Highway 4, which offers incredible sights of the giant sequoia redwoods. Go a little further to the Gold Rush Country and check out gourmet restaurants, limestone caverns and museums.
In Calaveras County, the Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway offers some of the best trails California has, and there’s no need for a tour guide along this system.
2. California Eastern Sierra
World-amazing skiing isn’t the only thing to enjoy in the Eastern Sierra area; it’s also got plenty of outdoor recreational events that make it a top spot for snowmobilers. One of the best places is the Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area, which includes 7,000-acres of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. There is plenty of room to enjoy the sights and challenge yourself.
3. China Wall Staging Area
China Wall’s snowmobiling Trail is located to the northeast of Foresthill and the China Wall OHV Staging area. It is the area many snowmobilers, snowshoers and cross-country skiers tend to start at. There are no specified sledding hills, as it’s just a flat route that stretches for 15 miles from the China Wall to Robinson Flat.
4. Jonesville Snowmobile Area
When snow season starts , this area of Butte County is transformed into a winter wonderland. Jonesville is one of the best local spots for snowmobiling, snowshoeing and skiing. There are 60 miles of dedicated snowmobiling trails separated into three loops. The small historic town is located near Butte Meadows within the Lassen National Forest, close to Butte Creek. Most of the winter excursions begin in the Jonesville Staging Area along Humboldt Road.
5. Lake Tahoe
There are plenty of snowmobile services in this region – rental shops , resort-style lodging and guides that make it a great getaway place during the winter. While most people think of Lake Tahoe as a beachy place, think and go beyond into the regal meadows and view the once-in-a-lifetime views of the Sierra’s waters.
There is a huge network of cared-for trails that lead into very remote parts of the country, making it the best of the best in snowmobile vacations. It’s important to note that your snowmobile will be affected by this region’s altitudes, which can reach up to 10,000 feet. Therefore, you’ll need to make some adjustments as you ride.
6. Lassen National Forest Trails/Ashpan Snowmobile Area
Into the southern half of Lassen National Forest is a huge swath of treated snowmobile trails that include 500 miles of snow landscape. If you head south along Highway 44, you’ll come to Ashpan Snowmobile Park.
Here, the elevation reaches 1,660 meters, with the snowmobiling area located in Lassen National Park’s northwestern area. There are nearly 40 miles of trails along with 25 miles of unlisted trails as well. There is always a warming hut for those individuals who need a break from the cold.
7. Mammoth Lakes
Along Highway 395 sits Mammoth, considered one of California’s best ski resorts and offers some of the West’s best snowmobiling trails. There are hundreds of groomed trails , including the active volcanic mountains where visitors can see bubbling hot springs.
There are roughly 30 feet of snow each year among its differing terrain and incredible views. You can take advantage of the guided snowmobile tours and trek it alone. Either way, you can enjoy all the Mammoth Lakes areas have to offer.
There are plenty of places to rent a snowmobile from, as well as to dine and sleep. Mammoth Lakes is California’s best snowmobile vacation spot in the winter.
8. Mount Shasta Snowmobiling
In northern California is Mount Shasta, which is a place many weekend warriors seek out to enjoy the great outdoors. They stake claims at the huge snow-capped stratovolcano and spend time in the national forest to enjoy the pure waters. There are 260 miles of cared-for snowmobile trails that range in elevations of up to 8,000 feet.
Mount Shasta is surrounded by the Shasta-Trinity, Klamath and Modoc National Forests.
9. Sherman Pass/Kern Plateau Area Snowmobiling
Sherman Pass and Kern Plateau Area is located to the northeast of Bakersfield and has roughly 120 miles of cared-for snowmobile trails. Sherman Pass starts seven miles from the Sherman Pass Road. There are all kinds of scenic oases to enjoy, with the main trail connecting to many others. It’s an ideal trail for novice snowmobilers.
On the pass’ western side is a huge snowpark. There is also a grooming program, ensuring that the area stays groomed, including its canyons, meadows and more.
10. Truckee-Tahoe
While California offers a plethora of outside-the-doorstop skiing, a most overlooked area is the Truckee-Tahoe area. It has a huge network of snowmobile trails that you can explore. There are over 200 miles of cared-for terrain within 650 miles of territory. With so much available in this area, you’ll always find something to do.
11. Yosemite
Many people know of Yosemite National Park but don’t realize the winter wonderland it tends to offer to visitors. Located 50 miles east of Fresno, there is a multitude of resorts to stay in. While trails are not widely groomed, it still provides visitors with epic scenery of a snow world.

- The best Vail snowmobiling experience I cannot express how magical this experience was from start to finish. Nathan Guild picked us up directly from our hotel in Vail and was an absolute gentleman. Once we picked the rest of group up from a meeting site, we drove in a limo style shuttle van. Top shelf from start to finish. The staff was all attentive once we arrived to the main snowmobile headquarters and was so genuine in wishing my wife and I happy 55th birthday!! I've ridden in several snowmobiles during my lifetime, however, these were by far top of the notch! Heated handlebars for the passengers seat complete with backrest, and heated driver grips along with touch adjusting buttons. After a well detailed safety and instructions meeting with Nathan, we began our journey into the winter wonderland of the Vail mountains. We were a group of 12 with Nathan and a guild in training bringing up the rear. I felt so safe as did my wife on the same vehicle. Safety was priority number 1 with this company. You could tell, this is not for the yahoos and drunks. If you wipe out, it could ruin everyone's trip waiting to pull your snowmobile out of the ravines. After a joyful ride, we made our way to the mountain top hut. A wonderful "Happy birthday " dessert and candles made our day!!! My wife wants to do it again and next time with friends and family. read more read less Dan M 1/01/2022 Safe and exciting Greg, our guide, was super chill and definitely enjoyed letting us open it up and have fun. - So fun! It was great that Greg picked us up at our hotel and then was also our guide. It was nice that the same person was with us the whole day. This was my second experience snow mobiling and this one was much better. The tour was great. It was a small group and we were able to go at a pace of our ability. It was really fun and safe. Boy was my mind blown... right from the start, we are met with a big smile and an ambitious personality none other than Mark Boutin. After he picked us up from the parking lot, no more than 5 seconds in to the shuttle ride, this man who I have never met before in my life made it seem as if I have known him my entire life! Such a personable, happy guy who expresses his love for the outdoors, and has immense passion in his profession. We haven’t even gotten to the tour yet! To start the tour he gives an in depth, fun, yet serious explanation of the machine. Once he assures we have no questions, we are on our way. The beginning of the tour he acquired a feel for the skill level and comfort of our group. Safety being his number one priority, he determines the safest yet most adventurous and beautiful trails to take. He stops at points he knows like the back of his hand that are beautiful and lively. He gives us educational info on the types of wildlife in the area and the tracks they make so that we can define (on our tour) the types of wildlife that has crossed or been through that area. This trip was nothing short of amazing. Every trail we took warmed my heart and made the inner kid in me come alive. As a Floridian who has come out every spring to visit family for about 12 years straight now, No other trip like this has left me with such joy. For those who take the time to read this, and even if Mark were to read this. I want to thank him and advise anyone in the area or anyone taking a trip out there to choose Mark Boutin as your guide. They picked us up from our hotel in Avon. Greg and Diego were our snowmobiling guides. After a brief lesson on how the snowmobile worked, we we off into the mountains! SO MUCH FUN! We followed each other in a line, but were able to go pretty fast. The snowmobiles were brand new, and very nice. After going for a couple of hours, we stopped in at their yurt for lunch, and a nice warm up near the wood burning stove. Food was great! We went back out and snowmobiled for a bit, then headed back to their office. Greg and Diego were AWESOME guides. Everyone had an absolutely great day. I want to do it again with our teenage kids. Things to know: they provided googles, helmets and warm boots for those who needed them. Boots were much warmer than the ones I had worn there. Definitely bring a neck warmer thing so you can cover your face. The handlebars and throttle are heated, but you still need some good gloves. I can’t say how much we enjoyed our day!
