We start off with a costume stunning in its simplicity and attractiveness: Sherry Jackson as the android, Andrea, in the episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" Costume designers must love girls like this, so small and firm that they don't need a bra. There is a whole lot of bare skin showing, considering the show was aired in 1966. Too bad the character appeared in only one episode.
The episode "Mudd's Women" featured three dazzlingly alluring actresses, in three appropriately dazzling gowns.
Grace Lee Whitney played Janice Rand. She appeared for only part of season one, but left a lasting impression, is fondly remembered by fans of the show, and re-appeared in the ST movies. She appeared in Some Like It Hot, and Irma La Duce. Note the very 1960s ultra-mini skirt, the half-calf leather boots, and the elaborate wig.
Below: In case anyone was wondering what the gals wore underneath those untra-short mini-skirts...
The episode "Shore Leave", written by Theodore Sturgeon, was a tour de force of silly costumes.
The episode "Conscience of the King" starred Barbara Anderson as Lenore, with fabulous blonde hair, but looking a bit unhinged at the end. Ms Anderson earned an Emmy Award for her long-standing role in Ironside.
Below: non-standard uniform in the episode "Squire of Gothos".
Below: "A Taste of Armageddon"; American character actress Barabara Babcock played Mea 3. She appeared again in the ST episode "Plato's Stepchildren." She played in numerous tv shows, including Dallas , and was awarded an Emmy for her role in Hill Street Blues. Not a dumb blonde: she was educated at Wellesley, and the Universities of Milan and Lausanne. In ST, alien gals always seem to have one bare shoulder.

The case of the missing hair on Star Trek: The Original Series
By rachel carrington | jan 25, 2022.
Star Trek: The Original Series had to use wigs and hair pieces for its actors
When the second season of Star Trek: The Original Series had finished filming neither Gene Roddenberry nor Robert Justman knew if the series was getting renewed, but they knew they had to be ready. And part of that readiness came in the form of the wardrobe department having all of its parts, including wigs and hair pieces. Unfortunately, Justman had some bad news to deliver to Roddenberry on February 5, 1968 when he sent a memo, a copy of which you can read at library.ucla.edu , to the show’s creator.
According to Justman, William Shatner had borrowed all four of his hair pieces after filming concluded. Two of these were new, which cost approximately $200 each, and two of the old ones cost approximately $100 each. Justman was concerned that if Star Trek were to be picked up for a third season, the hair pieces would have to be remade because the actor would have used the four “to such extent they will no longer be photographable.”
But that wasn’t the end of the hair woes on Star Trek: The Original Series
The same memo contained news of Majel Barrett’s missing wig. Neither Majel nor the wardrobe department knew what happened to it. In addition, Nichelle Nichols wig went missing as well. According to Justman, Nichols had borrowed it when she finished working and “claims that she returned it.” But no one knew anything about it being returned.
The series didn’t have a big budget to begin with so to have to replace those wigs, along with the hair pieces, would have put a serious ding in the wallet. There was no follow up to the memo so no one knows if the wigs ever reappeared or if new ones had to be commissioned. As for what happened to the wigs after the series ended, while some of them could have been reutilized, others, like the one Grace Lee Whitney had to wear as Yeoman Rand, would have needed some serious reconstruction.
Why Marina Sirtis wore a stolen wig for Star Trek: Picard. dark. Next

Dr. Crusher’s Hair
When you watch Star Trek reruns for decades, you start to obsessively notice some things. (“You don’t say!” says every Star Trek fan.)
When The Next Generation started, Dr. Crusher’s hair was Gates McFadden’s natural hair (although I seem to remember reading it had been dyed red because of a play she had been in).
McFadden was fired at the end of season one because Maurice Hurley, who had taken over the writing–showrunner duties from Gene Roddenberry, hated her character and hated her personally . Diana Muldaur was brought in as Dr. Pulaski, but at the end of season two, Hurley left, and for a bunch of reasons, so did Muldaur, and the show re-hired McFadden as Crusher.
When Crusher returned, she was sporting shorter hair—which was a wig over her real bangs:
It is not uncommon for actresses to wear wigs in roles, because long natural hair can require a lot of maintenance under the hot set lights and over long filming days to keep consistent for continuity. Julianna Marguiles wore a wig on The Good Wife for that reason .
Also note, in the above pic, the early third season version of Crusher’s medical jacket, with the collar. Pretty soon, the jacket would be replaced with a collarless version:
...and Crusher’s hair got longer, via a new wig that she wore throughout the rest of seasons three, four and five. Curiously, this wig was pretty much the same as her real hair, “three pounds” of which, she has joked, was tucked under the wig.
This must be her real hair in her brief appearance at the beginning of The Hunt for Red October :
It’s also her real hair in this flashback from season five’s memory-rape episode, “Violations.”
For seasons six and seven, she returned to her real hair, which looks a lot like the wig, but a little finer and more natural:
McFadden is active on Twitter— she seems cool —and has been hosting a podcast, “ InvestiGates ,” where she has frank, in-depth, personal conversations with her Star Trek colleagues. It’s quite good!
And this is how I know all of the above, as she freely jokes about all the wigs and hair shenanigans on Twitter. “1 season my hair 3,4,5 wigs, 6 and 7 my own hair again..movies my hair and throughout various shades of red and blonde color on my own darker hair.”
BUT! There’s one episode in the middle where I think it’s her real hair. Season three, episode seven, “The Enemy,” the great one where Worf lets a Romulan die rather than save his life with a blood transfusion:
This was the one episode between the short wig (beginning of season three) and the regular wig (the rest of seasons three, four and five), where Crusher’s hair gets inexplicably much longer—then immediately shortens again in the next episode.
My guess is it was a one-time shot to let her use her real hair, but they didn’t like it and gave her the new wig for the next episode, with this classic moment that quite profoundly fails the Bechdel test:
I can’t believe I wrote a whole column about a Star Trek character’s hair. At least it wasn’t Shatner’s .

Just came across this, and love that you wrote it! I tended to wonder about her hair across the seasons, too! Thank you for chronicling the various looks! Can I make one small correction? Dr. Crusher actually goes back to a longer hair look, similar to what she had in that Season 3 episode, "The Enemy" for ALL of Season 5. (See pic I attached from season 5 episode "Ethics"). Not sure if it's a wig or not, but it's definitely different from the looks of season 6 and 7, (and a bit longer, too).
She said on Twitter seasons 3-4-5 were wigs, seasons 1-6-7 her real hair (with some exceptions as noted). Thanks for posting!
So glad you included the random season three episode in here. I was trying to figure out which one it was!

"Live long and prosper."
The first officer of the USS Enterprise, Mr. Spock, is one of the most logical officers Starfleet as ever seen. He is always the one Captain Kirk turns to whenever needs to get some information or a different perspective on a situation. There's only one problem, we've never been able to figure out how the Vulcans decided on their instantly noticeable hairstyles. It's a little bit Medieval monk and a little 1920's flapper. Maybe it was to compliment their pointed ears but we're guessing we'll never know.
This Halloween you'll get a chance to look like the coolest Vulcan in all the galaxy when you wear this wig and ear set. You'll be ready to solve problems and embrace your new unemotional state. Practice your emotionless persona by watching Kleenex commercials and clips of people getting puppies as gifts. If you can watch all of that without a tear, then you're ready for your new Vulcan lifestyle!
