The Foundry was a way for players of Star Trek Online on the PC to add their own missions to the game, released in open beta with Season Three: Genesis , and removed from the game on PC with maintenance on April 11, 2019. The Foundry was not available to console players.

  • 4 Limitations

The Foundry was a major feature of Season 3 , released to the Tribble test server on December 2, 2010 and was released on Holodeck March 28, 2011. The One Year Anniversary (February 2, 2011) saw the live release of three Federation and one Klingon episodes that were among the highest rated by users on the test server: "The Longing," "Crouching Ty’Gokor Hidden Demon," "The Syndicate Extraction," and "Unholy Alliances, Part I." The Foundry remained at Beta 0.8 until its retirement in 2019, having never left open beta status.

  • Missions were started from the Foundry tab on the Mission Journal. The Foundry EULA needed to be accepted first.
  • For missions which begin at systems in sector space, a rotating list of the Top 3 Rated foundry missions were shown to passing players.
  • Some missions were been "spotlighted" by devs on their own tab.
  • Unless the player enables it, brand new missions with few reviews are hidden. Players needed to become Foundry Reviewers to curate content by pressing the "Become Reviewer" button on the Foundry UI element.
  • Players who subscribed were given 8 free project slots.
  • Space maps could be created from scratch.
  • An "Empty Ground Map" was later added for players to create environments from scratch.
  • Existing ground and interior maps may be modified by placing props
  • Missions can interact with objects in live social maps, as well as within custom maps.

Limitations

  • Ground maps could not be created from scratch, no terrain on existing maps could be edited.
  • There is no facility to remember player choices, thus branching storylines are impossible, or greatly limited.
  • It is not possible to add any form of voice over or custom music.
  • There is no way that players may create new assets, textures, or other "mods"

On April 11 2019, The Foundry was shut down. Though the published missions were saved on a separate server, they cannot be accessed by players or authors. As of now there are no official plans to resurrect the Foundry but many of Cryptic's staff expressed their desire to see it return.

To commemorate the Foundry, a set of sunset rewards were given out:

  • Players who played a Foundry mission before the date of March 4, 2019 were given 2 Genesis badges as well as a Genesis Holographic arm attachment, claimable on all player characters.
  • Additionally, this reward was given to anyone who used the editor and created a project, published or unpublished, before the cut off date.
  • Players who were selected for a Spotlit Mission received a [ Foundry Spotlight ] , and a [ Genesis Device ] Ground Vanity Device, claimable on all player characters.

Star Trek Online gets Foundry mission editor

Who hasn't wanted to put together their own Star Trek episode? That dream is about to come true, sort of. Cryptic have released the Foundry for Star Trek Online, a powerful set of editing tools that will let you create your own missions. The Foundry let you put together your own star systems, script battles, write dialogue and create cutscenes. A mission sharing system will let players rate missions, and the very best will be highlighted with developer spotlight awards, making it easy for players to sift through to the best player made missions.

The Foundry is an exciting addition to Star Trek Online, but it's built on the same tech as Cryptic's other MMOs, meaning there's a chance that similar tools could appear in Champions Online and the upcoming Neverwinter MMO. For more on the mission editing tools, see The Foundry section of the Star Trek Online site. If you're interested in playing Star Trek Online, there's a demo available.

Foundry Sunset - April 11, 2019

By Ambassador Kael | Mon 04 Mar 2019 08:00:00 AM PST

star trek online foundry

Greetings Cryptic Fans,

On April 11 , we are sad to announce that we will be sunsetting the Foundry system for Neverwinter and Star Trek Online. This decision was not made lightly; the Foundry was a passion project for many of us, and we have loved seeing the unique stories and awesome content our Foundry Authors have produced. Developers and players alike have enjoyed using the Foundry and the friends we’ve made and the journeys we’ve had will live on in our memories.

Our team at Cryptic strives to create excellent content and maintain a high standard of quality for our games. However, the legacy knowledge required to maintain the Foundry at our quality standards is no longer available. Our goal is to continue creating top-notch content for our current and upcoming games - and the development time and resources required to maintain the Foundry would impede on these new features and systems. To reiterate, this decision does not impact any other game feature or content development for Star Trek Online, Neverwinter, Champions Online , or future titles.

We understand this decision impacts our incredibly passionate and creative players. We wanted to thank you all for the incredible amount of work you have shared with us and the entire community through the characters, worlds, and stories you’ve created. We don’t want to leave the contributions of both Foundry authors and enthusiasts unrecognized, so we will be providing the following rewards to our amazing Foundry community. Players who contributed or participated in the Foundry prior to today’s date, March 4 th , 2019, will receive the following:

Star Trek Online Rewards

Players who have played one or more Foundry Missions will receive a Foundry Badge for their characters.

star trek online foundry

Players who have authored a Foundry Mission will receive a Botany Bay non-combat space pet.

Players who have been selected for a Spotlit Mission will receive a Foundry Spotlight, and a Genesis Torpedo Ground Device

star trek online foundry

 Neverwinter Rewards

Players who played 10 or more Foundry missions will receive a Foundry-related title

Players who published 10 or more Foundry missions will receive a cape with the Foundry logo

The Foundry, and the community it bloomed, has been a unique and special aspect of our games that will leave lasting memories for our development teams and players. Please join us Today, March 4 , at 3pm PT  ( when is this for me? ) for a livestream tribute to The Foundry and all the incredible contributions you’ve made. Thanks again to all of you who shared a story, and to everyone who took the time to experience them.

Recap / Star Trek Online - Foundry - “Relics”

Edit locked, as this is a recap page, major spoilers follow..

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sto_-_relics_5403.png

Starfleet Intelligence receives word of an increased Klingon presence on the strategically unimportant world Minkara V in the Otha System in the Eta Eridani block. The player is dispatched to investigate and fights off a few Klingon ships, but your ship takes damage and has to hide from their reinforcements in a nearby nebula while Damage Control sees to repairs.

Inside the nebula you discover a derelict ship belonging to a long-extinct race, and inside the ship is a Human Popsicle kidnapped from Earth in 1537. You thaw him out and, after convincing him you and your ship's counselor Shree aren't demons or agents of the Inquisition, learn that he is a Lithuanian mathematician and scientist named Johann Rymut. You explain where and when he is and hand him off to Shree for his long recovery.

  • Alien Abduction / Ancient Astronauts : The Ugcinian ship visited Earth in 1537 and froze Johann.
  • Aliens Made Them Do It : Between you and ship's counselor Dr. Shree, a few weeks or so before "Relics". Apparently you got possessed by incorporeal aliens or something to that effect and seduced her. We never do hear the whole story, and you don't remember any of it (and can optionally wish you did).
  • Ascended Glitch : For some bizarre reason your away team always falls through the floor when you beam over to the Ugcinian ship. Kirkfat turned this into a story element, saying you beamed over solo.
  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy : Copernicus apparently got the idea of a sun-centric solar system from the Federation, by way of Johann Rymut being sent back to his home time.
  • Brick Joke : During the mission briefing you lament that you miss the days when exploration was the main job of Starfleet, as opposed to fighting multiple wars simultaneously. As you beam over to the Ugcinian ship, you remark that it feels good to be an explorer.
  • Continuity Nod : Your science officer briefly mentions the Department of Temporal Investigations, in the context of a visit from them being preferable to whatever cataclysm would result from not sending Johann back to his home time period.
  • Damage Control : Your ship receives a few parting shots during the first firefight with the Klingons and, according to your chief engineer, would be a sitting duck if reinforcements showed up. Much of the next section of the mission uses the damage control efforts as a Closed Circle .

star trek online foundry

  • For Want Of A Nail : Discussed . According to the Guardian of Balance, not sending Johann back to 1537 leads to a Bad Future where "the machines" (inferred by your captain to be the Borg) rule unopposed.
  • Get a Room! : Dr. Daniels' response to catching you and Shree flirting. "My patient isn't standing by for nobody. Quit with your hanky-panky. The whole crew knows about you two. Get a room."
  • Human Popsicle : Johann when you find him aboard the Ugcinian derelict.
  • I'm a Doctor, Not a Placeholder : Dr. Daniels: I'm a doctor, not a therapist. (She explains how being a Fish out of Temporal Water could drive Johann insane.)
  • Jerkass : Dr. Daniels, of the cranky old lady variety.
  • Lampshade Hanging : Shree hangs one on the Guardian of Balance's claim that sending Johann back to the past restored the timeline, noting that the event that would've altered it in the first place hadn't happened yet. The Guardian basically says the Federation's understanding of time isn't good enough to make sense of it yet.
  • Language Barrier : The Ugcinians attempted to contact the Vulcans, also a warp-capable race, but they couldn't make themselves understood before their homeworld was obliterated by their sun Cassiopeia A going supernova, wiping out the species.
  • The Main Characters Do Everything : Option given for you to hang a lampshade on it when you insist on beaming over to the Ugcinian ship in an EV suit by yourself over your science officer's objections. "I lead every away team. It is only logical."
  • Noodle Incident : The aforementioned Aliens Made Them Do It between you and Shree is talked about a little, mostly in the context of how it makes working together very awkward, but never fully explained.
  • Acting Ensign Paulo is an obvious reference to Wesley Crusher's status in most of TNG , though she only gets about four lines.
  • When interviewing Johann he asks if you're agents of the Inquisition. Cue one of the dialogue options being the obligatory Monty Python's Flying Circus reference.
  • Space Clouds : You hide in one while Damage Control sees to your phaser power couplings and navigational deflector.
  • Stable Time Loop : Aliens kidnap Johann and freeze him for 900-odd years. Federation thaws him out and teaches him a little bit about the past, including that Earth revolves around the sun. Guardian of Balance sends him back to his own time and tells Copernicus about it. Copernicus publishes the theory but lies about where he got it.
  • Starfish Aliens : The Ugcinians were apparently biologically similar to the Tholians, a non-humanoid species from a Class Y, or "demon", planet. They physically couldn't send themselves into space (they didn't have the tech to simulate their own extreme atmosphere) so their ships were unmanned.

Actually they killed Foundry for the very same reason CBS is going after fans making Star Trek films, and that reason is one little moron who can honestly say he killed Star Trek and yeah I'm talking about Alex Kurtzman and Bad reboot er I mean Robot Besides Cryptic I think lost the source code so even if they wanted to bring it back they can't.
