A Guide to Stockholm’s Craft Beer Scene

Stockholms craft beer scene is exciting and varied

Stockholm has a wonderful beer scene, with an exciting array of places to try. There are three distinct options: international breweries, local operations and bars that are dedicated to provide great experiences for beer lovers. Read on for a tour of the craft beer scene in the Swedish capital.

Like many Northern European cities, Stockholm can be expensive when it comes to drinking in bars and restaurants, but the quality is very high, with many places offering a superb variety of exciting and innovative alcoholic drinks. In Sweden, you can buy alcohol that is above 3.5% at only one chain of shops, Systembolaget , which is state-owned, meaning that bars don’t have to compete against supermarkets or corner shops, as they often do in other countries.

What this means in practice is that bars and breweries can take risks. They can be innovative, and they can aim to create more exciting experiences, as they aren’t concerned with having to lower quality to compete on price. It also means that Systembolaget has an excellent selection, and is worth checking out as a starting point for anyone exploring alcohol in Sweden.

Oliver Twist Pub has around 150 bottled beers as well as 23 on tap

International breweries

Straddling the line between local and international breweries is Nya Carnegiebryggeriet , born from a collaboration between Carlsberg Sweden and the ultra-popular Brooklyn Brewery in New York. The result is a range of excellent beers that have both a European and an American feel, giving their collection considerable variety. You can visit their brewery, located in a former lighthouse factory in the south of Stockholm, either just to grab a beer and have some food, or on a brewery tour – these run every day except Sunday. You do need to book ahead, and if you want the tour in English, make sure to contact them by email beforehand.

The Mikkeller bar in Stockholm is small and cosy

Local breweries

For those looking for a more local experience, there are a number of Swedish breweries of varying sizes that have set up their own bars or tasting areas where you can sample the best in local beer making. One of the most popular places is the Stockholm Brewing Co , who open their doors on Fridays for a cosy after-work session that is always well attended. They are based in Södermalm and have everything from light table saisons to strong imperial stouts. If you aren’t in Stockholm on a Friday, you can also find their beers at many Systembolagets. Also in Södermalm is Modernist Brewery , another place aiming to break the boundaries of craft beer in Stockholm. They have beautiful bottle designs and an extensive range of beers to try.

Slightly outside of the centre are two more excellent options for sampling the Stockholm brewing scene. First is Pang Pang Brewery , which is based in Farsta, one of the final t-bana stops in the south of the city. Their star attraction is their Puttin’ in Hours Pale Ale, which features four different types of Swedish hop. Even further afield is Fjäderholmarnas brewery and brewpub on the island of Stora Fjäderholmen, a truly beautiful setting. On a summer day you can hop on a ferry from central Stockholm to get there and either try out their various beers with some food, or book a tasting, which includes a tour of the brewery. As you can see, Stockholm’s brewing scene is in rude health.

The Fjäderholmarnas brewery is on the idyllic island of Stora Fjäderholmen

Beer bars, restaurants and cafés

If you are looking for more variety than the range of one particular brewery, Stockholm has you covered with a huge selection of bars that focus on beer. A good place to start is Kvarnen , which has been in Stockholm since 1908. Stepping into there is like going back in time. Another classic Stockholm haunt is The Flying Dog in the northern part of the city. It’s an institution in the Stockholm scene, with one of the city’s best beer selections.

If you want Stockholm’s largest collection, though, you have to check out Pressklubben , which has over 750 different brews to choose from, as well as great food. Bierhaus has the selection and menu of a classic German beer hall but is set in a modern bar in central Stockholm. In keeping with its old-town setting, Sjatte Tunnan is set in a historic cellar and serves traditional Swedish beer as well as food. If you want a place with more of a pub atmosphere, Oliver Twist in Södermalm is a great place to go, with 150 different bottled beers and 23 beers on tap.

Akkurat is another food and beer favourite, with a wide and varied selection of over 200 beers and a food menu that is notable for its oysters. Pubologi is a modern and innovative bistro with an excellent range of beers, so is a real treat for foodies who love beer.

Away from these more classic bars are experimental joints that often brew their own beer in microbreweries and augment them with other beers from better-known suppliers. Perhaps the best example is Omnipollos Hatt in Södermalm; they make their own small batch beers as well as serving a rotating assortment of beers from places like Duvel and Buxton. Tritonia in Gamla Stan does something very similar. They have their own microbrewery, but also serve brews from names such as To Ol and Ballast Point. These places love to experiment, and with changing guest beers each visit can be a bit different.

One final addition to the Stockholm scene is beer cafés. These aren’t quite restaurants, but are more than bars. While they keep beer front and centre, there is also food that is great for a quick bite while you enjoy a drink. You could just as easily have dinner there as a quick working lunch. Perhaps the best example is Katarina Olkafe , which combines deli-style food from the east coast of America with local and imported beers. Another fantastic example of a beer café is Folk and Friends , whose excellent pies go brilliantly with their many different beers.

Pubologi is set on one of Gamla Stan’s beautiful cobbled streets

The craft beer scene, then, is really thriving in Stockholm, making it a brilliant place to visit if you are a beer lover looking for some new spots, brews and bars to try out.

Swedish beer and beverages – a craft affair

Sweden boasts some 400 microbreweries, crafting beer and other types of Swedish beverages using sustainable methods.

Craft beer enthusiasts will find a smorgasbord of microbreweries in Sweden, producing beer as well as other drinks, such as ciders and soda. The microbrewery movement, which began on the American west coast in the late 1960s, has rooted itself firmly in Sweden. You’ll find almost 400 innovative craft beer purveyors here, most of which make their brews in eco-friendly ways, using locally sourced, organic ingredients. The country boasts more microbreweries per capita than anywhere else, apart from the UK.

New microbreweries have blossomed over the last two decades, producing ever more intriguing artisan brews – from Jämtlands Bryggeri’s coffee stout to Brewski ’s Raspberry Liquorice Vanilla Sorbet wheat beer. Alongside these more experimental offerings, you’ll find plenty of artisan variants across pilsner, lager, pale ale and wheat beer. In addition, some breweries offer cider, spirits and soda.

A visit to Sweden’s well-stocked liquor store ‘ Systembolaget ’ – Sweden’s official alcohol purveyor – opens up a world of Swedish beverages. You’ll find stores across the country as well as a recently opened webshop.

Here’s a Sweden-wide list, from north to south, of eight microbreweries, each with its own identity:

Beer Studio, Umeå

Founded in 2013 and based in a rustic garage, Umeå’s Beer Studio has a youthful feel to its offerings, as evidenced in the music-inspired artwork adorning the creatively designed cans. The names are distinctive, too – B-Side Brown Ale, Loop Session Lager and Equalizer IPA. The most experimental beer of the range would have to be the Sputnik Krisis Russian Imperial Stout. This richly, malty beer is best matched with powerful flavours – the Beer Studio team recommends either “a slab of tender seasoned porterhouse steak or the smelliest cheese you can possibly cope with”. In 2017, Beer Studio added soft drinks to its repertoire – enter Pop Art Craft Soda, infused with typically Swedish flavours, such as lingonberry and blueberry. Beer Studio’s offerings can be sampled at many restaurants, and are stocked at Systembolaget.

Jämtlands Bryggeri, Pilgrimstad

Founded in 1995, Jämtlands Bryggeri is a respected force in the world of Swedish beverages. The President lager was the first beer to be bottled up at the Pilgrimstad-based brewery, and 20+ have followed since. The Mango IPA is a fresh, fruity affair, while the Coffee Stout is more robust, infused with a hearty measure of locally roasted coffee. Whichever option you choose, it’s all of the “fresh” variety, meaning it’s filtered and not pasteurised, and free from additives and preservatives. You’ll find Jämtlands Bryggeri’s decorative bottles in local restaurants, and a good selection lines Systembolaget’s shelves.

Oppigårds Bryggeri, Hedemora

Located in an 18th century farm in Hedemora, in central Sweden, Oppigårds Bryggeri produced its first beer in 2003. Despite rapid success and increases in production, it’s still a family-run business. The brewery prides itself firstly on the quality of its beer, but also on the responsible disposal and re-use of by-products – spent grains, yeast and hops – in partnership with local farmers. Like many of the craft beer makers that have sprung up over the past couple of decades, Oppigårds found initial success with bold flavours and strong alcohol content in offerings, such as the Indian Tribute IPA, the Thurbo Double IPA, and the Thurbo Stout, as well as single-hop varieties such as the Amarillo and Single Hop Ale. More recent additions include lower strength “session” ales, while the latest Heritage Collection includes traditional brews – weissbier, porter, dunkel and pilsner.

Sigtuna Brygghus, Sigtuna

Sigtuna Brygghus , less than a 10 minute drive from Arlanda airport, launched in 2005 with modest intentions, but has swiftly become a mainstay of the craft-brewing scene, with a dual focus on sustainability and experimentation. This beermaker runs on renewable power only and takes a responsible approach to its waste products, turning them into biogas. There are three organic ales in Sigtuna Brygghus’ line-up, along with a variety of special ales and limited edition small-batch releases and non-alcoholic beers. Take a brewery tour to try a variety or stock up on a few bottles at Systembolaget.

Strange Brew, Strängnäs

“Small, local and very much hands-on” – that’s how Strange Brew in Strängnäs, a one hour drive west from Stockholm, likes to describe its artisanal operation. The delicious beers crafted here are unfiltered and dry-hopped, and the punchy aroma owes to the generous hopping schedule, following the primary fermentation. Alongside the brewery, the company has tapped into the outdoor eating boom by launching a number of experiences including BeverageTruck and FoodTruck – serving casual but high-quality dishes such as burgers made from locally sourced meat, alongside beer served fresh from the barrel.

Omaka, Stockholm

Located in central Stockholm, Omaka is a brewery and restaurant combining food and Swedish beverages to perfection. On the inventive beer list you’ll find the dry, crisp and slightly bitter variety Mamma (mother), while on the opposite end of the flavour spectrum, there’s the chocolaty, berry-like Svartskog (black forest). A tasting menu is offered, complete with beer pairing and the dishes served up are developed to celebrate contrast. Expect everything from German sausage to lighter, Japanese-inspired dishes.

Fjäderholmarnas Bryggeri, Stockholm

Idyllically located in the Stockholm archipelago, Fjäderholmarnas Bryggeri swung open its doors in 2014 to offer visitors a “complete craft beer experience”. The resident brewpub allows you to order fresh beer straight from the barrel, getting tips on what food might go with your drink. The brewery’s beer tasting sessions allow you to sample the many varieties on offer – from pilsner and IPA, to stout. Workshops are held regularly if you’re keen to learn more about the Swedish beer tradition. The creatively designed cans can be bought at Systembolaget.

Qvänum Mat & Malt, Kvänum

As the name suggests, Qvänum Mat & Malt (Qvänum food and malt), a 1.5 hour drive north-east of Gothenburg, develops beer to match food, not the other way round. The Ruby Porter, for instance, goes particularly well with mature cheese. It’s infused with locally sourced raspberries and has notes of marmalade and dark chocolate. Whichever organic brew you opt for, all are made from hops, yeast and barley malt – and the slightly less common rye and wheat – plus the occasional dash of locally sourced fruit and veg, such as rhubarb or parsnip. Collaborating with local bakery Dafgård, Qvänum gathers leftover bread and uses it to craft beer – all of which is unpasteurised, unfiltered and free of additives. Qvänum also produces other Swedish beverages, namely spirits such as brandy and aquavit. Tasting sessions are organised regularly.

Breweries in Stockholm

Posted By Neelam Varia on Aug 9, 2017

For beer lovers, Neelam Varia rounds up some of the best breweries in Stockholm.

stockholm sweden brewery tours

Sweden may well have strict alcohol laws, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for experimentation. Stockholm is peppered with breweries (and microbreweries) each brewing interesting, funky beers.

Amongst all these, there’s bound to be something for you so here are some of the best breweries in Stockholm.

Stockholm Brewing Company

Stockholm Brewing Company was launched in 2010 by two childhood friends. Over the years, they’ve produced countless beers, including a range of collaborations, limited edition special beers, and cellar brewed beers. They’re the first brewery in Stockholm to have gained the right to sell their beer straight from the brewery – though this wasn’t without some legal battle. Still, every Friday, during the summer, they open themselves up as a brewpub, giving you the chance to sample all their beers. And it’s here you’ll find some of the more experimental beers, especially since there is a focus to keep the ingredients local.

www.stockholmbrewing.com

Famed for their funky bottles, Omnipollo was founded in 2011 and has since won a host of awards. The brewery is an interesting collaboration between Henok Fentie – who had prior been home-brewing for years, and Karl Grandin – an illustrator/graphic designer (hence the bottles). They brew beer they want to drink, which has paid off, because now they boast a strong following. A short distance from the brewery is Omnipollo Hatt – a bar where alongside the beer, you can feast on sourdough pizza.

www.omnipollo.com

NYA Carnegiebryggeriat

NYA Carnegiebryggeriat is a joint venture between Carlsberg Sweden and Brooklyn Brewery, with all brewing staff being hired and trained by the latter. The brewery opens up at specific times for tours during which visitors are also given a selection of beers to taste. Food is on offer to soak up all that beer – pretty good food, we may add – the Head Chef has worked in some pretty amazing restaurants around Sweden. As well as all this, the brewery is situated in Hammarby Sjöstad, by the water, so yes, you can get there by boat.

Pang Pang Brewery

Pang Pang Brewery is the brainchild of Frederik Tunedal, and also happens to be one of Sweden’s smallest breweries. All their beer is brewed by hand and because of this, as well as their tiny location, they only brew a limited number of beers. What they’re most famous for, however, is probably their venture with creative agency SNASK. With SNASK, they’ve created a globally renown shower beer. That’s right, a beer specifically designed to be consumed in the shower. While the bottle is only 18CL, it certainly packs a punch at 10% abv.

Modernist Brewery

Located on the ‘hipster island’ of Södermalm, Modernist Brewery is indeed, all about modern brewing. They begun life as part of an artist collective, brewing in the same building as a paint factory. Now, they share a space with craft gin distillery Stockholms Bränneri; at various beer festivals they’ll collaborate, so keep an eye out for their cocktails. The beers are all handmade and bottle conditioned, which as beer nerds will know, gives the beer more depth, character and flavour.

Gamla Enskede Bryggeri

Gamla Enskede Bryggeri is a tiny brewery, producing just four beers, all of low alcohol content. The brewery was born from the increased interest in lower abv beers, as well as an increased interest in craft beers. Former school teacher Robin Johnander began the project, brewing the beers in pots and pans and selling by the glass. Needless to say, interest in the product grew exponentially, leading to a brewery being built in Robin’s garage, and production increasing to a more mass scale.

Monks Cafe and Brewery

Monks are in fact owners of two breweries – one located just a stones throw from T-Centralen, and the other on Gamla Stan. The former brews all sorts of experimental beer, while the latter focuses almost exclusively on porter and stout. What makes the breweries truly special however, are their classes for the public. Brewmasters work with groups to create unique beers – be it for special occasions or just for fun.

Hopsan Brewing

The clue is in their name. If you like hoppy beer, this is for you. Hopsan is located slightly out of town, in the suburb of Gröndal. They begun brewing beer in their kitchen, but of course, outgrew this and so last year, they took over an old abandoned bakery, and transformed it into a brewery. Their beers are not yet widely available, but they’re only young, so watch this space.

www.hopsan.beer

Sundbybergs Köksbryggeri

Again, this one’s a little further out of town, but it is definitely worth the trip. Being housed in an old church, it’s especially unique. The bar is situated on the upper floors, but offers visitors a spectacular view over the entire production. And if you want experimental, some of the ingredients used include spinach, beets, elderberry and passionfruit.

How did Stockholm’s bar culture evolve into its present form?

Stockholm’s distinctive bar culture didn’t emerge overnight. Rooted in its history, societal norms and even governmental policies, the city’s bar scene has grown in response to an interplay of diverse factors. But how did Stockholm evolve into the bar haven it is today?

Historically, Sweden’s relationship with alcohol has been multifaceted, which has, in many ways, shaped the contemporary drinking scene. The nation’s past bouts with heavy drinking led to strict alcohol policies, exemplified by Systembolaget, a government-owned chain of liquor stores with a monopoly on sales of drinks above 3.5% ABV. These limitations prompted bars in Stockholm to be inventive, ensuring that their offerings were both unique and high-quality to attract discerning patrons.

Over the decades, as societal perspectives towards drinking have evolved, Stockholm’s bars have transitioned from simple drinking venues to places of social congregation and experience. The emergence of hybrid establishments, which serve as cafes or restaurants by day and transform into lively bars by night, attests to this evolution. Such venues epitomise Stockholm’s knack for blending functionality with pleasure.

Swedes, especially those in Stockholm, tend to favour quality over quantity. As a visitor, it’s not uncommon to find locals engrossed in animated conversations over carefully crafted cocktails or meticulously brewed craft beers. The craft beer movement, in particular, has seen a surge in Stockholm, reflecting the city’s and its people’s appreciation for artisanal, locally-produced beverages.

Timing is essential to understanding when Swedes typically frequent bars. While weekends are predictably popular, many Stockholmers also enjoy after-work drinks, locally termed ‘After Work’ or ‘AW’, which start as early as 16:00 on weekdays. This ritual is a way for locals to unwind, socialise and transition from work mode, often done over shared platters and discounted drinks.

Lucy’s Flower Shop Stockholm Sweden cocktail bar

Lucy’s Flower Shop

Situated in the cellar of a downtown 20th-century building, Lucy’s Flower Shop epitomises Stockholm’s allure. A cocktail hotspot, it dominates the city’s cocktail landscape. With its lavish purple and red hues and meticulously designed illumination, it evokes scenes from vintage espionage tales. Under the watchful eye of Bar Manager Linn Sterling, patrons experience discreet yet prompt service. The drinks, crafted with no more than four ingredients, promise an unexpected synergy. The Vodka Soda stands out, revealing unexpected depths upon tasting. Meanwhile, the Rye & Apple, with its complex sweet, sour and spicy notes, aspires to become a contemporary classic.

Röda Huset Stockholm Sweden bar

In the urban core of Stockholm stands Röda Huset (‘the red house’ in English), an eye-catching tri-level establishment donning its namesake hue. At the helm of the bar is the distinguished Hampus Thunholm, whose ingredient-driven cocktails are a tribute to Swedish gems, from luscious elderberries to ripe plums. The Carrot cocktail seamlessly blends akvavit with cold-pressed carrots, while Frozen Herbs is a refreshing concoction of gin, tonic and herbs. Yet, the true marvel is Kolagräs. Deceptively simple with its minimalist appearance, it combines Absolut Elyx infused with bisongrass, Galliano and sweet woodruff with cream, offset by tart Swedish green apples. The result? A crystal-clear cocktail evoking the taste of a sweet-sour apple pie drizzled in vanilla sauce. Its reputation is no hyperbole; within a year of its introduction, Kolagräs has achieved cult status, offering one of the most unique drinking experiences.

Chief mixologist Anton Windmar orchestrates a symphony of flavours, from the zesty Whiplash infused with Eminente rum and champagne, to the entrancing Starry Night that pays homage to Van Gogh’s masterpiece. Each sip tells a tale, reflecting the hotel’s rich tapestry of influences. Riche Fenix

Riche Fenix , the dynamic sibling of century-old Riche, lights up Södermalm’s scene. Positioned in Stockholm’s vibrant quarter once tagged as a seventeenth-century slum, Riche Fenix is the brainchild of Matilda Jackson, PG Nilsson’s heir, redefining hip urban bars. With tantalising finger-foods like caviar-topped steak tartare on waffles crafted by Chef William Carlström, the place hums with style. The drink to sip? The fiery Habanera Margarita. A canvas of contemporary art and a clientele epitomising city chic, this spot merges history with innovation, making it a magnet for the modish of Stockholm.
