5 Handy Apple Maps Tips for Easy Travel

streets and trips app for iphone

The iPhone Maps App has come a long way since its original iOS 6 debut. Using Apple Maps, you can now avoid traffic, set your transportation mode, and share your arrival time via Siri. With iOS 14, you can even scan your surroundings to find your location and use Apple Maps Guides to find the trendiest places.

To stay updated on the latest Apple Maps features, consider trying our free Tip of the Day . Here's our collection of iOS Maps tips to get you started.

iPhone Life

Travel by Bike with Cycling Directions

Scan to find your location in apple maps, explore new locations with guides, share your eta with siri, avoid traffic & steer clear of congestion.

Finally, you can get cycling directions from Apple Maps . This feature takes into account bike lanes and bike-friendly roads so that travel is easier and safer for cyclists. You’ll also see information about upcoming hills and warnings about where you can’t cycle. This feature is currently limited to a few big cities, but hopefully will expand over time. To get cycling directions:

  • Open your Maps App and then enter your travel destination in the search bar.
  • Tap Directions and then tap the bicycle icon . You’ll see routes with information such as total climb, distance, and more.
  • Tap Go to start your route.

In cities where your GPS signal isn’t great, you can now refine your location by scanning nearby buildings and streets. This will allow your iPhone to display a much more precise location. Since Refine Location uses the Look Around function, it is limited to major cities. Hopefully Refine Location in its current form is only the beginning, and we’ll see more accuracy and cities that offer this feature in the not-too-distant future.

streets and trips app for iphone

As of iOS 14, Apple has replaced the Collections feature in Maps with Guides, which are lists of destinations in a given city that you can share with family and friends (great for giving recommendations or creating a shared itinerary). In addition to creating your own Guides, you can view Apple’s professionally created ones.

  • To view Guides, just enter a city in the Maps search bar.
  • Then swipe up on the city information card. If curated Guides are available for that area, you will see them below the Directions button.
  • Tap a Guide to view it or tap See More for more options.
  • If you would like to save a guide, just tap Save Guide . You can then view your saved Guides under My Guides from the main Maps page.

streets and trips app for iphone

Whether you hit traffic, take a detour, or just don’t drive as quickly as expected, having your estimated time of arrival (ETA) change is a common occurrence when you’re on the road. Up until now it hasn’t been easy (or always safe) to share your new ETA while driving, but now you can just ask Siri!

Next time you’re en route using Apple Maps, all you have to do is say, “Hey Siri, share my ETA with...” and say the name of someone in your contacts list. Siri will send the information to that person through the Messages app.

streets and trips app for iphone

When you’re planning your route, you will naturally want to know what areas might slow you down, either so you can avoid them or add in time to your commute accordingly. Now, Apple Maps shows congestion zones in many major cities throughout the world. Paris and London, for example, will show light red coloring over current congestion zones so when you search for directions, you will be able to take this into account. Yet another feature we hope to see expanded soon!

Apple Maps Ipados 15 3d Flyover

Apple's Maps app gives you everything you need to get where you're going and find interesting places along the way. It can tell you where you are, what direction you're facing, what's nearby, how to avoid traffic, and much more. Maps can show you the ground in 3D and can take to the sky with Flyover. How to share location and directions with Maps for iPhone and iPad

Sometimes it's not enough for you to know where you are or where you're going. Sometimes you need to let other people know. Maybe you want to share a great new coffee shop you've found, maybe you got separated at the park, or maybe you need to be picked up where your car broke down. Sure, there's Find my Friends for sharing location all the time but, when you need to share your location or some directions any time, there's Maps.

How to get transit directions with Apple Maps for iPhone and iPad

Apple has a few useful features specific to transit directions, making it easier to navigate the big city without a car. You can easily see transit stops for specific lines and, whenever multiple lines are available, you'll see all of the possible route suggestions. Our guide to Apple Maps transit directions shows you how.

Apple Maps doesn't support transit directions for all locations, though the list of supported cities grows longer with each update. Here are all of the places with Apple Maps transit directions .

How to use Siri to get directions and maps on iPhone or iPad

Ios 14 Compact Ui Siri

With Siri and Apple's built-in Maps, you know longer have to stop, type, and search for directions. You can simply ask Siri for directions , and you'll get a route to go right there. It's great if you're in a new area of town or traveling in a new city. And if you get lost, you can even ask Siri to take you home.

Apple Maps Favorites

Here's a not-so-secret fact about me: I'm awful at remembering where I parked. It's why I own a brightly colored car that can make noise and flash its lights if I press my key fob — without them, I might as well condemn myself to wandering through darkened parking garages for hours.

Thanks to Apple's Parked Car feature in Maps , though, I no longer have to rely on shiny paint or loud noises to help me discover where I left my vehicle: I only have to look at my iPhone or Apple Watch.

How to change settings for Maps on iPhone and iPad

Apple Maps

Apple Maps offers settings that let you change the volume of navigation prompts, change the units of distance, and even get follow-up emails on issues you report. You can customize Maps settings and get everything set up just the way you want it — once you know where to look!

How to delete your search history and destinations in Maps on iPhone and iPad

iOS 14 Maps

If you're cruising along the highway on a road trip with pals and you want to take a peek at the weather without switching apps, follow along, and we'll show you how to view the weather in Maps ! It's super convenient, especially while driving, though you'd probably only know how to find weather info in Maps if someone told you.

How to use Maps extensions on iPhone and iPad

How to enable and use Maps extensions on iPhone and iPad

iOS makes it easier to get more out of the Maps app by allowing third-party apps to add Maps extensions . The primary purpose of app extensions is to give you the ability to do things like book a reservation at a restaurant or call for a ride from services like Uber — all without having to leave Maps. This kind of integration frees up your precious time by cutting out the need to switch between different apps to accomplish your goals.

If you can't find Maps extensions , we can help you there too.

Google Maps

Though Apple has been making its Maps app better over time, many people still prefer the tried-and-tested Google Maps for something as important as knowing where you are going.

While you can't change the default mapping app on iOS, you can make it easier to switch to an alternative with a $1.99 utility app called Opener that lets you open Apple Maps locations in Google Maps .

Apple Maps CarPlay iOS 14

Outside of streaming services, I'd be willing to bet Maps in CarPlay is the most commonly used app. Whether you're looking for a business or traveling out of state, it's much easier to be told where to go than navigating from memory or a map.

Most of Maps' interface in CarPlay is pretty easy to understand, but there are a few tricky parts. The above-linked article takes a look at some of the app's basic functions and how you can use them to get the most out of your experience.

Google Will Guarantee Prices on Select Flights — And Other Features We Love

American multinational technology company and search engine

Google unveiled its replacement for the Google Trips app this week in the form of a flurry of new features for Google Maps and the Google Travel site.

The new tools promise to make Google's trip planning, booking and mapping services more convenient and intuitive for users. A lot of the old app's functionality has simply been moved to other parts of Google's ecosystem, while updates to other services the company offers have vastly improved.

Most of these changes center around Google Maps , and a new portal called Google Travel, which consolidates many of the company's travel services into a single program. Some changes to both services have already been rolled out, and more are coming over the next few weeks.

Related: TPG Beginner's Guide

With all these changes, TPG looked at the features we're most excited to test — and use — in the coming weeks.

Get a Flight Price Guarantee

Google is moving its accommodations search feature, Google Hotels, along with Google Flights, into the Travel portal. TPG has written plenty about Google Flights and Google Hotels , so we're excited to see them integrated into the new Travel portal.

Google has also decided to showcase its price history tool following the move. Google Flights will show you whether current prices for airfare are high or low compared to what others have paid for the same route, and will also let you know when Google is confident prices will not drop any further.

And for select itineraries booked between Aug. 13 and Sept. 2 , Google is willing to back up those predictions. Starting Aug. 13, select flights landing before Nov. 24 will display a price guarantee badge on Google Flights.

That means if you book the flight and the price of your fare drops more than $5 below Google's lowest estimate, you'll be refunded the difference up to $500. The price guarantee will only be available on qualifying flights (probably only those pricing at the lowest end of Google's flight price history) within the US, and those to select international destinations.

Though it's too soon to test the feature, we'll be keeping an eye on what flights Google guarantees — and whether or not they end up paying out at the end of November. If you're planning on booking a flight in the next few weeks, consider first checking Google for a price guarantee.

Use Augmented Reality to Find Your Destination

Even with a GPS map in front of you, getting around a new city can be challenging. A new feature in Maps called Live View hopes to remedy this using augmented reality (AR) technology. Travelers will be able to use their phone's camera to find arrows pointing them in the right direction when navigating on foot.

Google's Live View is currently in Beta, but it will be expanding the new function to iOS and Android users with compatible phones this week.

See Reservations in Google Maps and Google Travel

One of my favorite functions of Google Trips is being moved to both Google Maps and Travel. A reservations page similar to the old one will collect bookings for tickets and hotel confirmations sent to users' Gmail accounts all in one place. The reservations are then grouped by destination and organized into trips and vacations.

streets and trips app for iphone

Although Google Trips could be a little hit and miss about finding reservations in users' emails, I personally had incredible luck with hotels, Airbnbs, flights, buses and trains showing up on the app, including reservations made in languages other than English. I always found this function incredibly useful for locating tickets and confirmation numbers without sifting through my email, and I'm happy it hasn't disappeared.

The feature is already available on Google Travel, and will be coming to Maps soon. Check if your upcoming trips show up at Google.com/Travel.

Find Restaurants You'll Love and Make Reservations

For many, the entire point of taking a vacation is the food. You probably know that you can use Google Maps to find restaurants nearby, but there could be more to the dining function in the app than you expected. Not only can you make reservations within the app, but a function called Your Match can try to predict whether you'll like a restaurant based on previous eating habits. Artificial intelligence can be scary at times, but who knew it could also be delicious?

streets and trips app for iphone

Your Match didn't appear for me at first because my privacy settings were set high. After I posted a few reviews on Google (well, almost a dozen), I started seeing Your Match recommendations showing up next to user ratings in the Maps app. And many of the places being suggested were, in fact, places I'd been and loved — but hadn't reviewed.

If you don't like sharing ratings and reviews but you still want personalized recommendations, you can also fill out a survey about your favorite types of restaurants and cuisines under the user preferences tab.

Pick the Right Neighborhood

Deciding where you want to stay during your trip can take a lot of research. Finding the right mix of restaurants, history, nightlife and other attractions takes hard work, but an upcoming function in Google Travel could simplify that process.

Hotels market insights

When searching for hotels on the platform, Google will recommend areas of the city for you and provide a few notes about what each neighborhood is known for. This feature hadn't launched when we tested Google Travel, but should hopefully be coming soon.

The best travel apps you need on your iPhone

Malcolm Owen's Avatar

via Cameron Casey/Pexels

streets and trips app for iphone

Going on holiday to far-off destinations was exciting and challenging until a certain global pandemic made things considerably harder. As the world starts to open itself back up, so is the prospect of travel.

Though you may be limited to within a country's borders or are barred from accessing some territories and potentially face quarantine in others, there's always the chance of going away. And, just like a few years ago, your iPhone will be your best friend for the trip, wherever you decide to go.

These are what AppleInsider believes are some of the best apps you can have on your iPhone when traveling alongside Apple Maps.

Google Maps

Google Maps is extensive, and importantly has an offline mode.

Navigation apps are extremely useful in travel, not only in getting to your destination but also in traversing a town or city you're unfamiliar with. They're critical and go first on this list ahead of anything else.

It may seem odd to recommend Google Maps over Apple Maps, but there are a few things to bear in mind here. For a start, Google Maps is extremely popular, has been around for quite a bit longer, and has over 220 countries and territories mapped, complete with hundreds of millions of businesses and other locations for you to find.

For international travel, where data plans become expensive or severely limited, the Google Maps offline option is its biggest asset. You can define an area and preload maps before you travel, which can then be used without needing a data connection, potentially saving you money.

Google Maps is free to download and use and requires iOS or iPadOS 12.2 or later.

Expedia is a great one-stop app for your flights, hotel, and other travel needs.

If you know where you want to go but don't fancy scouring airlines for flights or trying to track down a great hotel deal, Expedia is an excellent way to sort all that out for you.

Expedia helps you find the perfect flight within your budget, as well as the ability to find and book the right hotel, and if you need it, a rental car. Packages and bundles offer discounts for buying flights and other elements simultaneously versus getting them individually.

The app does more, including offering recommendations to local attractions and getting deals on tours, shows, and theme park entry.

It's also handy in that everything to do with your trip is held within one app, making it a one-stop-shop for all of your travel needs. You'll even get alerts for flight delays and gate changes, as well as any other unexpected alterations to your trip itinerary.

Expedia is free to download and requires iOS or iPadOS 14.0 or later.

LoungeBuddy

LoungeBuddy can help make your trip to the airport more enjoyable.

Frequent airline passengers may not be that enthralled by busy airports. Airport lounges can offer an escape from the crowds and a relaxing time before you take off, but typically they're only offered as a free service for certain types of plane tickets or if you have a credit card or something similar that provides similar access.

While you may be OK with the idea of paying for a pass to the lounges, there's no guarantee that the lounge you want to enter will allow you in the first place, such as if you're flying on a different airline. It can also be hard to determine what lounges are in a specific airport in the first place.

LoungeBuddy serves as both a guide and a way to quickly buy access to airport lounges so that you can travel in style. The app will tell you what lounges you may have access to based on your trip, class of service, memberships, or credit cards you have, as well as whether it's free or paid.

It also allows users to buy access to hundreds of other lounges in airports worldwide, regardless of the user's status or ticket.

LoungeBuddy is a free download, requiring iOS or iPadOS 14.3 or later.

Don't fancy a hotel? Airbnb can help you find a unique place to stay.

If you need a place to stay somewhere, hotels are the obvious choice. However, if you want something a bit more personal and native to the area you're in, you could try Airbnb.

Offering access to many locations, ranging from secluded beach houses to apartments in the heart of a city, the app can get you as close or as far from civilization as you want. You can also stay in unique locations, such as domes and treehouses, that you won't find in more corporate-focused travel sites.

You can get in contact with hosts through the app, as well as local experts who could help make your trip the best it could be by using their knowledge of the area. The app also recommends various experiences you can try out for fun while you're at your destination.

If you're lucky enough to have a property that you could let out and earn a bit of cash, you can do so on Airbnb, which provides support and liability insurance for those choosing to become a host.

Airbnb is free to download and requires iOS or iPadOS 14.0 or later.

Google Translate

Google Translate will tell you what signs and text means, even from a live camera feed.

In a similar vein to the Google Maps recommendation, we're recommending Google Translate over Apple's Translate app. In short, it's because Google's heavily-developed service is far more helpful.

Offering translations between 108 languages by typing, it also includes other ways to translate, including verbal conversations, handwriting, and photos. There's even a live instant translation feature, managed by using your iPhone's camera and superimposing translations of words on top of the live video feed.

This is extremely useful for immediacy, such as reading a menu or looking at signs, as it'll help you understand what's happening extremely quickly.

Again, the best part is that there's an offline mode for translations without Internet for 59 languages. So long as you preload the languages at home before you go, you're saving on data costs.

Google Translate is free to download and requires iOS and iPadOS 12.4 or later.

Microsoft Streets and Trips 2022 Alternative

Jul 31, 2020

It’s 2022 and nearly everyone has access to a personal GPS on their mobile device — but let’s not forget that digital maps are a recent invention. With the introduction of MapQuest in 1996, online personal mapping slowly became accessible to the public. This not just revolutionized personal navigation — it transformed the way industries like field sales operated.

But before Waze, Google Maps, and even TomTom existed — there were five friends from Surrey, England that built an overnight success software called Autoroute. Massively popular, it was eventually downloaded by half of the computers in the UK. In the late 90s, it was acquired by Microsoft and distributed in North America as Streets and Trips in 2000 .

14 years later, it suddenly disappeared from the market. So what happened?

What Was Microsoft Streets and Trips?

Microsoft Streets and Trips was a mapping and routing program that helped lay the foundation for personal GPS systems. Now discontinued, it was a computer program that mapped out streets, businesses and places of interest — as well as displayed pins on a map and built multi-stop routes from place to place.

In later versions, it introduced features we are familiar with like weather considerations, traffic monitoring and construction updates.

With an extremely user-friendly interface for its time, Microsoft Streets and Trips featured ground-breaking technology that contained more than six million miles of map.

streets and trips app for iphone

The most impressive feature was Streets and Trips’ ability to update route information in real time. The software would identify roads that were under construction and provide information on how to avoid them.

This combination of business data and route optimization was a success within sales departments. It provided a comprehensive solution that offered territory creation, route optimization , management efficiency, and territory mapping — effectively revolutionizing the sales industry.

But in 2013, Microsoft chose to discontinue the product; and then in 2015, it ended its Streets and Trips support lines.

Illustration of dashed line pointing from Microsoft Streets & Trips logo to the Map My Customers logo

Is Microsoft Streets and Trips Still Available?

Microsoft Streets and Trips was discontinued as part of Microsoft’s concerted effort to invest their resources into Bing, a web search engine meant to rival Google.

It was Microsoft’s hope that Bing Maps would eventually compete with Google Maps, but that hasn’t exactly panned out so far .

In the end, Streets and Trips released a goodbye message urging their customers to use Bing Maps instead. In doing so, they lost sight of the enterprise market that used Streets and Trips for sales. Bing Maps was not a direct replacement and was inherently a consumer product.

Is There a Microsoft Streets and Trips Replacement?

Yes — in 2016 we built Map My Customers to replicate the best of what Streets and Trips had to offer, while adding in modern features that make it mobile-friendly and super insightful.

We knew that when Streets and Trips vanished, enterprises and businesses had no suitable alternative.

Most sales reps had wound up resorting to free mapping softwares  like Google Maps and manually entering each data point themselves.

This led to a lot of frustrated customers, including (of course) ourselves…

It was 2015, and we were stuck running our sales routes like it was 1988. It was inefficient, boring, and in the end — it just didn’t make any sense.

That’s why we created a new software that does everything (and more) of what Microsoft Streets and Trips was capable of:

  • Route Optimization  —  Reduce planning and travel time with our leading routing algorithms
  • Data Visualization  —  Visualize sales opportunities and customers displayed as clickable pins on a map
  • Lead Generation  — Identify new customers and create additional appointments while on the road
  • Planning and Contact Management — Log activities like cold calls and meetings, track check-ins and sync it all to your calendar
  • Management and Reporting  — Manage territories, track rep activity and surface sales data unique to the field

Unlike Microsoft Streets and Trips, MMC is built for the phone — meaning you can see your routes, schedule and customer notes from anywhere. On the web, we have dashboards to organize and analyze your team’s data and easily transfer data between team members or your CRM — all with a modern user interface.

Above all — here at Map My Customers, we promise not to disappear.

Chart that compares the features of Map My Customers to the features of Microsoft Streets & Trips

How Map My Customers Can Replace Microsoft Streets and Trips

Microsoft Streets and Trips was a powerful tool, but it wasn’t really built with the salesperson in mind. Map My Customers is unique because it’s the tool that’s purpose-built for outside sales. In fact, I first built this app specifically for my father , a career field sales professional in the flooring industry.

Because of this, we understand exactly what sales reps need. Here, I break down the top 5 aspects of what makes Map My Customers so useful for reps and teams in the field:

Microsoft Streets and Trips Alternative for Sales Route Planning and Optimization

Just like Microsoft Streets & Trips, one of the keystone features of Map My Customers is the ability to create detailed multi-stop routes . Creating these routes is simple and allows sales reps to build their most efficient day.

Map My Customers visualizes all of your customers as pins on a map. You can add those pins to a route in a few short taps or by using our lasso tool to mass-add relevant pins.

Illustration of Map My Customers' routing capabilities

Similar to Microsoft Streets and Trips, our route optimization takes into account real-time factoring such as traffic congestion, required stops throughout the road, weather conditions, traffic accidents and more. Since our platform is powered by Google Maps ( proven by CNBC to be more accurate than Apple Maps ) you can rest assured knowing that the route directions you receive will always be the fastest route possible.

Once your route is built, you can also follow turn-by-turn navigation via a mobile GPS of your choice — including Apple Maps or Waze.

Creating a route on our platform is actually much easier and faster to do than on Microsoft Streets and Trips. In fact, many of our customers praise our platform for saving them countless hours that would have been spent on driving and planning routes. Some customers have even cut their weekly planning time in half and reduced their weekly driving time by 200 miles .

When you build a route with Map My Customers  — you also get a stop-by-stop itinerary where you can further dictate additional information about stops, including customers involved, the length of the visit and the total distance traveled. Once you build your optimized route, you can sync your itinerary to your calendar (like Google Calendar or Outlook) and add it to your Saved Routes.

Want to change your route? Simply drag and drop each stop and rearrange it in the order you want it to be in. You can easily add or remove stops as well.

Even better, routing is available on our web app, iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

See a hands-on product tour of Map My Customers

Microsoft streets and trips alternative for sales data visualization.

As we mentioned above, when you import your customers into Map My Customers they are displayed as pins on a map. This is helpful for routing, but it’s also an important way to visualize and fully understand your sales territory like never before.

In a single field of view, you can see every customer, prospect or contact displayed — making it the perfect visual for the field sales rep (and part of what was so great about Microsoft Streets and Trips).

Unlike Microsoft Streets and Trips, however, Map My Customers takes data visualization to new heights. For example, our heat mapping tool can help you to understand the geospatial factors that influence your deals.

Illustration of Map My Customers' mapping capabilities

You can also use Map My Customers to curate a specific view of certain customers. With Grouping and Filtering, you can segment your customers based on tier, priority, and product type — as well as by radius (in miles) or custom fields.

Map My Customers brings a more insightful view of your territory than Microsoft Streets and Trips ever could. Once you’ve segmented and visualized customers appropriately, you can build a new route or click in to the customers to learn more about them, make a call, or send them an email.

Microsoft Streets and Trips Alternative for Lead Generation

As a rep in the field, it’s also important to be able to keep your pipeline consistently full and have new deals coming in. With Map My Customers, you can find new leads easily and quickly with our Lead Generation tool.

Find places of businesses nearby to build a day of cold calls to generate new business. Or, if you find yourself with a gap in your schedule due to a cancellation — use the Lead Generation tool to find a nearby opportunity.

Illustration of Map My Customers' lead generation capabilities

Although Microsoft Streets and Trips did not have a true Lead Generation tool, they had a similar business search similar to Google Maps that posted reviews and additional details about opportunities.

With Map My Customers, you can easily find new opportunities relevant to you — and instantly add them as a saved prospect or give them a quick call.

Microsoft Streets and Trips Alternative for Sales Planning and Contact Management

Whereas Microsoft Streets and Trips mostly existed as a tool for routing, Map My Customers also acts as a mobile contact management and planning tool .

This means that beyond routing, you can do all of your administrative work from your mobile device as you go about your day. Some customers have spent up to 50% less time doing that admin work, meaning they’re spending more time selling.

Before you hit the road, use Map My Customers to pick out your highest priority customers and build your itinerary for the day or week.

Illustration of Map My Customers' planning capabilities

As you go about your day taking meetings and making cold calls, you can log notes about your customers, add files, and schedule follow-ups as necessary. You can even use our Cadence Management tool to indicate when you need to follow up with an account.

The best part about this is that you can also share this information with your entire team, which encourages clean and consistent data management practices across your entire organization.

Microsoft Streets and Trips Alternative for Sales Team Management and Reporting

Another way Map My Customers goes beyond Streets and Trips is with leading field team management functionality. As a manager, you are able to see your sales team’s activities and successes displayed in several ways.

With our Field Dashboard, you can see recently added companies, recent activities (like calls or emails) and active deals. Plus, you can actively compare the performance of your reps by number of activities logged and by type of activity.

Illustration of Map My Customers' managing and reporting capabilities

You can also click in to an individual rep to see more about what their day is like and check in on them.

In addition, easily define sales territories and assign them to a rep so you can get a true birds’-eye view of your organization’s sales landscape.

Within Reports, you can access tables of more granular information, activity logs, and added customers. This data can be exported or integrated with CRMs like Salesforce, HubSpot, Zoho and Microsoft Dynamics.

Replace Streets & Trips Today

Streets and Trips was a revolutionary product, but it was limited in some of its features. One of the biggest advantages of Map My Customers is that we are both a web and mobile solution. You can easily create routes on the web and have it be available and accessible from your mobile device (iOS or Android) and vice versa.

We’ve taken the best of MapPoint and Streets and Trips and improved them for the needs of the modern outside sales rep. If you haven’t jumped onboard with Map My Customers, you can begin here with a hands-on product tour!

Absolutely MUST HAVE

I visited Costa Rica and downloaded this app. We also purchased a paper map as well but I was unconvinced that she would be able to navigate quickly and within small towns on a paper map. This app totally saved us! We were birdwatching for two weeks all across the country and added stars to all of the locations we wanted to visit. We also had stars pinpointing all of the places we would be sleeping. That way, we could keep track of where we were driving and if there were any sites we wanted to stop at. The worst part of this app was that some roads were not named.... but it turns out that was NOT the apps fault but simply unnamed roads in Costa Rica. Another cool thing is you keep your phone of airplane mode but you are still tracked via GPS so you always know where you are at. It does not give you turn by turn directions but it was super easy to navigate and really accurate. Super happy with this app and would highly recommend it for an upcoming trip. The only thing I wish they offered was a desktop platform for you to put in your starred locations before the trip rather than on the phone. It would have saved a small amount of time but overall not a huge problem.

Developer Response ,

Hi, Thank you for your feedback. We are glad that you like the app and wish you a nice time using it. A desktop application is a very good idea, we will look into it. Should you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected] anytime.

Crashes frequently

I’ve used City Maps for over five years. These are the pros and cons I’ve found with this App. PROS: you can mark and save restaurants, subway stations, historical attractions to navigate to when offline. It provides detailed maps that are very useful if you have no cellular or WiFi access. CONS: There have been two times that all of my stored locations and folders have been completely purged thus losing a lot of obscure places I planned to revisit. The map is often jerky when you try to zoom in/out or scroll around. Sometimes this causes the app to abruptly crash. Recently I keep having an issue with the entire map disappearing so that you’re left with your blue (GPS position) on a completely blank screen. I tried deleting and downloading the app again but sometimes this occurs often when I am miles away from my hotel and necessitating me to find WiFi to use conventional methods to find my way back. I am a premium member and I sent an inquiry to their customer service about this and never heard back. Finally, although there are thousands of restaurants and popular locations in the database, more often than not, I find that restaurants I want to find aren’t recognized and I’m talking about too-rated restaurants recognized by Trip Advisor or Foursquare. I hate to say it, but you’re better off paying for an international cellular plan than to rely on this app as a stand alone navigation source for off grid traveling based on my experiences.

Really useful mapping app

I use CityMaps2Go a lot when in places where I either have poor cellular data access OR was concerned about security using local WiFi and or cellular data providers. The downloaded versions of CM2G maps are really quite accurate and more than sufficiently detailed. Examples (1) in very remote northern USA. I have family who live on the edge of a Natl Forest and cellular coverage is awful. I have maps downloaded for these states and never have an issue. (2) I do business occasionally in Middle East - Saudi and UAE. Cellular coverage is spotty, expensive and not always secure - again I have maps for these countries downloaded and can turn phone to ‘airplane mode’ and still find my way around. Then only go live with internet when confident I have safe reliable access (say at reputable hotel). It is really a good option for people who are on the go and not always tethered to safe speedy internet.

The route planner business leader is none other than Google Maps. It allows you to easily locate destinations and plan routes right on your phone, tablet, or any other device. Its turn-by-turn navigation is one of the best mapping resources in the industry.

Although it is primarily used for personal and recreational purposes, you can also use Google Maps to plan different types of routes. It’s simply the easiest tool to get from point A to B – it has almost single-handedly changed the way the world travels.

A common misconception is that Google Maps only allows for 10 stops in a single route, but there are some workarounds for that.

Google Maps is such a big player in the mapping and free route planning software industry. Many other apps have used their technology as a foundation for their own mapping software .

With so many groundbreaking features such as Street View and Immersive view, Google Maps is a true powerhouse and an invaluable resource. Immersive view is a feature powered by AI that allows users to get a 3D, multi-dimensional experience view of a location, where you can preview bike lanes, sidewalks, intersections, and parking spots for your next journey.

immersive view

Despite being 100% free and very easy to use, Google Maps route planner has some limitations for those working in industries such as outside sales or field services.

  • If you’re planning a trip with multiple stops, as many outside salespeople and field service techs do, Google Maps will find the best route from one point to the next, but it won’t optimize the entire route.
  • On Google Maps, you can’t add more than 10 stops to your route.
  • No CRM integration

If you’re not sure whether Google Maps is the best solution for you, you can learn about the benefits and limitations of using Google as a route planner , and the top alternatives for businesses.

What's the benefit of using a route optimization software designed for field salespeople when you already have Google Maps? Selling 25% more and driving 20% less.

Waze has a lot in common with Google Maps, which makes sense — Google bought Waze in 2013. But there are key features that differentiate the two and while Google Maps caters to users who walk, drive, and use public transport, Waze is more car-oriented .

Waze uses a sophisticated mapping technology to make driving quick, easy, and fun. Using real-time data from other Waze users, drivers stay informed of road conditions with quirky and colorful maps.

Providing shortcuts and live traffic updates, Waze helps drivers get to their destination as efficiently as possible. Staying connected with other drivers for real-time traffic updates has never been more empowering or enjoyable.

Cutting-edge voice features ensure that users never miss their exit. Waze even connects with Spotify, making it possible to easily switch between music and navigation. They have fun and engaging themes that you can choose from and even options to get voice directions by your favorite celebrities! Driving around while getting directions from Morgan Freeman or Arnold Schwarzenegger sounds pretty cool, right?!

They are currently beta-testing a new feature that informs users of roads that have a history of crashes, a useful feature for users looking for the safest route to their destinations.

The Waze Carpool app also allows you to find rides heading your way, spare a seat for those who need it, share toll and gas information with other carpoolers, and engage in small talk with other lone drivers.

Waze is a great free route planner app when it comes to planning simple routes from point A to B, and it even allows you to add 1 stop along the way while keeping you on the fastest route.

However, if your route has multiple stops, Waze’s trip planner will not allow you to add those extra stops. You’ll need to create a new route every time, which can make it extremely difficult and time-consuming to efficiently plan your routes.

While Waze does not allow for unlimited stops to routes, it can be used as the navigation system for other route planners on this list, such as  Badger Maps .

Want to know more about how Waze works as a route planner? Check out this in-depth piece that shows you how to optimize routes with Waze and some of the best alternatives available to you!

Sales reps and service techs know the importance of managing their time and by using a paid route planner they can work more efficiently, freeing them up from the more time-consuming and menial tasks to focus on the tasks that provide more return on their investment.

There are many fantastic free options for route planning apps with unlimited stops, and each of them serves a different purpose. The best free routing app for you will depend on the particular personal or professional needs you have.

In general, if you need an option that is a bit more sophisticated, it might be best to pay a little money. In most cases, the route planning app professionals choose will end up paying for itself in traveling expenses and increased revenue. The gas savings alone might end paying for the route planner you choose.

Say goodbye to Microsoft's 'MapPoint' and 'Streets and Trips'

Brad Sams Senior News Editor Neowin @bdsams · Jul 7, 2014 08:05 EDT · Hot! with 46 comments

streets and trips app for iphone

Microsoft has recently announced that it is retiring two of its mapping products, MapPoint and Streets and Trips. Both of these services have received their last update and will soon be retired in favor of Microsoft's premier mapping product, Bing Maps.

We don't know exactly when Microsoft changed their pages to announce that these services had reached their 'End of Life' and a quick search around the web shows that it is not widely known.

MapPoint made it easier to view, edit and integrate maps into existing applications, and Streets and Trips was a route planning package that was a subset of MapPoint. Knowing what these products do, it's not a surprise that these services are being retired in favor of Bing Maps.

Both of these applications are examples of how applications are moving to the browser. Both of these mapping services used to live inside their own isolated application, but with the browser quickly an application that can support running high end processes inside of it, these former stand-alone products are quickly disappearing.

Streets and Trips will have online support available until July 14, 2015; both products can still be purchased up to 12/31/2014.

Microsoft Streets and Trips 2013 - How to install on a new computer

How do I activate my old Microsoft Streets & Trips 2013 on my new computer, I need an install file? I have a product key but I cannot get the software installed on my new computer. The software still works with Windows 11 as that is what I had on my old computer.

I have a similar issue. I want to transfer Streets & Trips 2013 to another computer. But I don't have my product key anymore either. How can I install or transfer my Streets & Trips 2013?

What program replaces Streets and Trips

I have the DVD/CD for Microsoft streets and trips 2013 but when I try to install it I get an error. I really like this map program and would like to get it installed on my windows 10 computer. How do I install it without the error code

0xC004D301 licensing initialization error

I just got S&T installed and running on a new Win 11 machine. I had to install a 2010 C++ service pack to get past the mcc100.dll missing error.

2 tricks that might help:

1) S&T installer or something during my install process needed to restart the computer. Naturally, the dialog box was put up behind all the other windows. My new Dell decided to do a firmware update during the restart...

2) to get past my licensing initialization error, I had to right-click S&T and run it as administrator.

Now it seems to work fine. Opens old maps, taskbar no longer flickers when it's running.

The question is simple, The answer is not, they asked about the whole streets and trips activation. Not MapPoint and construction update.
