Last December, NME spoke with frontman Derek Whibley about their “aggressive” new album, which he called “the perfect way to go out”.
“There’s more to the album than nostalgia,” he told NME . “Even if I tried to write ‘All Killer, No Filler’ again, I wouldn’t be able to. It just doesn’t come out the same. The songs sound like they could be from those eras though.”
Following on from recent single ‘ Landmines ’, Sum 41 also released ‘Rise Up, which Whibley described as “me coming out of hospital 10 years ago, and what happened afterwards.” The singer was hospitalised in 2014 after his liver and kidneys failed due to alcohol abuse .
“That’s something I’ll never stop thinking about,” he told NME , with ‘Rise Up’ penned about “that struggle of finding the faith to continue on and the strength to build yourself back up.”

"Heaven :x: Hell" will arrive on March 29, 2024 via Rise Records . "Heaven :x: Hell" is the most ambitious album from SUM 41 yet — "Heaven" is 10 tracks of snarling high energy pop punk, while "Hell" consists of ten heavy metal anthems spiked with fret-burning solos, thrashing riffs, and fist-pumping hooks. The band has been straddling the line of pop-punk and metal for their entire career, and "Heaven :x: Hell" is a testament to their innovative sound and unmatched skill, proving them as pioneers 27 years after the bands inception.
On the new album, vocalist Deryck Whibley says: "Once I heard the music, I was confident enough to say, 'This is the record I'd like to go out on.' We've made a double album of pop punk and metal, and it makes sense. It took a long time for us to pave this lane for ourselves, but we did, and it's unique to us."
Alongside the album announcement, SUM 41 released a new single and music video, "Rise Up" . The first offering from the upcoming album's metal-filled "Hell" side, "Rise Up" opens with a flurry of guitar riffs and pounding drums fit for a mosh pit straight out of the band's early years. "Writing 'Rise Up' , I felt the way I did when I first got signed," says Deryck . "I felt the pressure and the need to create something great, but I felt so excited at the same time."
Previously, SUM 41 shared "Landmines" , from "Heaven :x: Hell" 's pop-punk "Heaven" portion. The track, with an anthemic chorus and ground-shaking drunk hits, was released alongside a nostalgic music video. The track gained the attention of notable outlets such as Entertainment Tonight , Consequence , NME , Exclaim! , Brooklyn Vegan , Alternative Press , Knotfest , and countless others.
Last year, SUM 41 announced their breakup after 27 years of making music together. "Heaven :x: Hell" is aiming for nothing short of greatness, a perfect parting gift from the band to the fans that have supported them endlessly.
"I love SUM 41 , what we've achieved, endured, and stuck together through, which is why I want to call it quits," Deryck leaves off. "There were so many times we could've broken up. For some reason, we kept sticking it out. I'm proud of that. It's the right time to walk away from it. I'm putting all of my energy into what's ahead. This is going to be the biggest tour of our lives, and I want to make it the best show we've ever done. That's it."
Speaking to CJAY 92 's Jesse and JD about the upcoming album, Whibley said: "The intention was with this new record — it's a double record, 'Heaven :x: Hell' , and the 'Heaven' side is 10 songs of what would be old-school SUM 41 pop punk, and the 'Hell' side is the newer sort of heavier metal side that we've done for about 16, 17 years now — maybe even longer. But anyway, yeah, I think that song does have the spirit of, say, [2001's] 'All Killer No Filler' and [2002's] 'Does This Look Infected?' , but played by a band that's been playing for 30 years now."
Asked how much pressure was there for him and his bandmates to make this final album exactly how they wanted it, Deryck said: "There was no pressure, because we didn't really know that we were going to make this the last record. When I started writing songs for this record, I didn't even know I was writing songs for SUM 41 . I thought I was writing for other people, because at the beginning of the pandemic, I was getting asked by managers and record labels if I'd work with some of their artists. They were looking for pop-punk stuff. And so I just started writing songs, and I just happened to like them and I didn't wanna give them away. So I kept them. And I didn't even know we were making a double album. I didn't even know it was going to be what it became. It wasn't until all the music was just written. I was just writing for the sake of writing, and when I listened to it all back, it just kind of spoke to me."
Regarding the decision to put SUM 41 to rest after the upcoming LP and tour, Deryck said: "I'm a big believer in that the music tells you what to do, and it just told me this should be a double album. Once that album was finished, I'd realized, and I'd been thinking this for a while, that I felt like after all these years with my 1,000% focus on SUM 41 all day, every day, I felt like I don't have much more of that in me to continue past this record. I've been in this band since I was in tenth grade, and I just... I'm getting to a point where I'm thinking, I'd like to put some focus and energy into something else. And I felt this is probably the best record we've ever made. And I think this version of the band is the best we've ever been live. And I thought, what a way to just go out on this one."
Whibley previously talked about "Heaven :x: Hell" in an interview with TheresaRockFace of the Houston, Texas radio station 94.5 The Buzz . At the time, he said: "It's two totally different records. It's 10 songs each side. I would call like early SUM 41 pop punk, and the 'Hell' side is like newer, heavier SUM 41 that we've kind of done the past couple of records, that sort of style. I don't wanna call it metal, but it's our version of what we do that's heavy and metal influenced."
He explained: "Over the years, we've done both sort of styles. We've had more heavy music than pop-punk music, but since we started with that on those first two records, it's kind of like you're labeled that for the rest of your life. But there are fans of ours that don't really care for any of the pop-punk stuff and only like the heavier stuff, and vice versa."
According to Whibley , "There are no guests" on "Heaven :x: Hell" . "There was some talk about it," he said. "We've never really done that. And as the record starts moving along, it just gets finished, and we're, like, 'Well, I guess we've done the record now.' Those ideas come up early on, and then once the songs are done, we're, like, 'I don't know. Maybe we'll just leave it as is.'"
Whibley also talked about the songwriting process for "Heaven :x: Hell" and how it came to turn into a double album. He said: "It wasn't really that fast [to make], but it also wasn't intentional. There was no thought or idea to make a double album. The music just kind of came out that way. And I'm always a believer in the music tells you what to do. So I didn't have this idea of, like, 'I'm gonna write a bunch of pop-punk songs and write a bunch of heavy songs.' I was just writing stuff and collecting music, and I didn't know what it was for. And one day I just decided, 'Okay, I've got all these songs. I'm gonna put 'em on a disc and go drive around in the car and listen to just see what I have.' And once I listened to it all, it kind of spoke to me. It was just, like, 'This needs to be a double album, 'cause they're two separate albums.' There was no thought of it. And even with the band, I didn't tell them, 'Hey, I think this is a double album.' I just sent them the music and said, 'Listen to everything that I've been working on. Tell me what you think.' And one by one, each guy came back and said, 'What do you think about doing a double album?' So the music spoke to all of us."
SUM 41 's storied 24-plus-year career includes over 15 million records sold worldwide, multiple Billboard -charting releases, a Grammy Award nomination, two Juno Awards (seven nominations),a Kerrang! Award in 2002, as well as multiple Alternative Press Music Awards .
In September 2023, Whibley was discharged from a hospital after being treated for pneumonia.
Back in 2014, Deryck collapsed in his kitchen and was rushed to the hospital, before doctors revealed his liver and kidneys had failed. He was placed in a coma for a week to help his body detox from alcohol and went on to get sober and lead a healthier lifestyle.

My favorite band of all time! The first time I got to see them was at a Chicago music festival and I got to meet them and it was a highlight of my life. They were so nice and hilarious. Then I got to meet them again at a tiny show in Dallas at the house of blues and they told stories from the road. Such down to earth guys. I got to be front row for that show and they just thrived in that small room it was such a special experience. They just never disappoint. Their old stuff is what we love and grew up on but their new stuff is just as good. Will always be their #1 fan. Hope to see them as many times as possible.

This was my third time seeing Sum 41 and they were absolutely fantastic! They never disappoint! The only thing I will say is that I found out after I left the concert that they came out for a second encore and played Pain for Pleasure. Probably around 80% of the people had left before then, so I assumed they were done after the first encore. I would just recommend that everyone really makes sure they are truly done before leaving. I also thoroughly enjoyed the openers, who were The Plot in You and The Amity Affliction. Sum 41 is great live, and I look forward to seeing them again and again.
It was awesomeness it was everything i wanted and thought it would be. The played their newest song . they just put out and then they played nothing but their old music . it was freaking amazing. I will see them again and again . love it they are amazing . love y o u guys !!

Sum 41 Announce Final Tour, Including Last-Ever Show
The Interrupters are support for Sum 41's final US tour dates
Sum 41 have announced their final tour, including the Canadian punk vets’ last North American concerts.
The worldwide outing, dubbed “The Tour of the Setting Sum,” will see the band on the road for much of 2024. The itinerary includes separate spring/fall US legs, with The Interrupters supporting both.
The spring outing kicks off April 19th in Omaha, Nebraska, and runs through May 19th in Norfolk, Virginia. From there, Sum 41 will embark on a European tour before returning to the States on September 4th for a gig in San Francisco. The final fall US leg wraps up on October 5th in Las Vegas. The band’s last-ever show is set to follow the tour on January 30th, 2025, in Toronto.

Sum 41 announced their impending breakup back in 2023. In addition to the farewell tour, the band will drop their final album, the 20-track double LP Heaven :x: Hell , on March 29th. The release pairs a pop-punk “Heaven” disc with the more heavy metal “Hell” flip-side.
“Once I heard the music, I was confident enough to say, ‘This is the record I’d like to go out on,’” frontman Deryck Whibley said upon the album’s announcement. “We’ve made a double album of pop punk and metal, and it makes sense. It took a long time for us to pave this lane for ourselves, but we did, and it’s unique to us.”

Here's Where Sum 41 Will Play Their Final Show As A Band
The pop-punk group have announced their major international tour of the setting sum, which will conclude in canada in 2025..
Canadian pop-punk icons Sum 41 have announced their final headlining world tour, Tour Of The Setting Sum, which will conclude with their last ever show as a band in January, 2025. The concert will bring them back to their home province of Ontario — the group hail from Ajax, Ontario — for one final gig at Toronto's Scotiabank Arena on January 30 of next year.
Before that, though, the band will tour the world, with 70-plus dates kicking off in Jakarta, Indonesia on March 1, taking the group to Japan, Austria, America and more. The tour coincides with the release of the band's final album, Heaven :x: Hell , which is set for March 29.
advertisement
The band has previewed the album with two singles. "Landmines" is a high energy shot of classic pop-punk — a sound that has had clear influences on younger acts like Olivia Rodrigo, Willow, and rising Canadian songwriter ThxSoMuch — while "Rise Up" shows off a heavier sound the band has embraced in the last decade, without sacrificing Sum 41's penchant for catchy choruses. The singles reflect Heaven :x: Hell 's duality: a double record, the album has one half highlighting pop-punk, and the other leaning towards metal.
In addition to the closing show in Toronto, the Tour Of The Setting Sum features a run of four Canadian dates in Quebec, with the band playing Rimouski, Quebec City, Saguenay and Victoriaville this August. The tour also includes Sum 41's largest show to date, a sold-out performance at the Paris La Défense Arena in Nanterre, France hosting over 35,000 people.
The tour will serve as a final hurrah for Sum 41 following a 27-year career. The band first rose to attention during the pop-punk heyday of the early 2000s with their 2001 debut LP All Killer No Filler , which reached No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and No. 9 on the Canadian Albums chart. They build on that success with 2004's Chuck , which went to No. 2, and hit No. 1 in Canada with 2007's Underclass Hero . The band have also won two Juno Awards and sold over 15 million albums worldwide.
Though Sum 41's recent tours have only been getting bigger as fellow veteran pop-punk bands like Blink-182 and Green Day play stadiums , lead singer Deryck Whibley explained in a recent interview with GQ that the pace takes its toll, between stress and medical issues and detracting from time with family. Last fall, following a tour with The Offspring, Whibley experienced a life-threatening bout of COVID and pneumonia .
Whibley doesn't want to end up "a miserable rock star who doesn’t want to go onstage," he told GQ . Instead, the band are going out on a high, experiencing a career resurgence and releasing a record Whibley is proud of.
Pre-sale for Tour Of The Setting Sum starts on Friday, January 19 via the band's website . Toronto pre-sale begins on January 17.

Canadians are streaming their homegrown musicians. According to a new report, of the 1,000 most-streamed artists in Canada, 113 are Canadian.
Laying a Foundation for Success , published by Music Canada — the association representing major music labels in Canada — takes a look at Canadian streaming data to determine whether Canadian artists are getting heard. Studying the 10,000 most popular artists Canada in 2022, economist Will Page finds that 889 were Canadian. Of the 10,000 most popular songs, 1013 were Canadian.
At the upper echelons of popularity, the trend holds: roughly ten percent of the thousand most-streamed artists and songs were Canadian. Canadian artists like Tate McRae and Charlotte Cardin outranked popular American stars like Selena Gomez on that list. Other Canadians amongst the 1000 most-streamed artists include country singer Josh Ross, Punjabi-Canadian artist Karan Aujla, pianist Alexandra Stréliski and singer Lauren Spencer Smith.
Of the 889 Canadian artists amongst the top ten thousand, roughly 75% perform in English, while 20% perform in French. Page notes that the third most-popular language segment is Punjabi music, which is also the fastest-growing music language in the country , and accounts for 3% of the 889 musicians.
On the global stage, Canadian artists also rank third, behind the U.S. and the U.K., in worldwide streams of the thousand most-popular songs.
“In a world where fans can listen to any artist, from any country in the world, and with nearly every recorded song at their fingertips, listeners are choosing Canadian music," says Music Canada CEO Patrick Rogers.
Andrew Cash, President of Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA), points to the Canadian funding organizations that make streaming numbers like this possible.
"In many ways, this is a real testament to the work that FACTOR and Musicaction and Starmaker have done to invest in Canadian talent at the beginning, and to work with companies and artists along the way," Cash tells Billboard Canada .
For economist Will Page, who previously worked at Spotify, this data demonstrates the strength of Canada's music industry in the streaming economy.
"The Canadian recorded music industry is by any honest reckoning a case study in streaming success," Page writes.
Recorded music revenues in Canada have doubled since 2014, when Spotify launched, and are now as high as they were before the launch of iTunes in 2004. Page notes that according to consultancy MIDIA, Canadian recorded music revenues could soon hit a billion dollars for the first time.
Though streaming revenues may be growing, many artists are critical of streaming services' royalty models. Spotify's new royalty share structure has de-monetized tracks with fewer than a thousand plays per year, leaving many smaller and emerging artists out of the royalty share pool.
In the report, Page argues that the problem is not with the royalty models but with the increase in the number of musicians and "mouths to feed."
Getting Canadian Artists Out to the World
It's a pivotal time for music streaming in Canada, and Music Canada's report has some suggestions on how this data could be used for regulating streaming services.
The government is preparing to implement Bill C-11 , the Online Streaming Act, which became law last year. As the CRTC undertakes consultations around how to best apply the new amendments to the Broadcasting Act — the first round of hearings wrapped up in December — Page's report lays out three possible policy approaches.
The first is to do nothing, and to let the services continue to operate essentially unregulated.
The second approach, which Page refers to as "Mandate, Don't Dictate," would entail moderate government interventions that benefit Canadian artists and rights-holders. Page outlines potential interventions such as requirements that Canadian artists be indexed highly on playlists, or that streaming services pay into the Canadian music industry in the same way as radio broadcasters, which are mandated to contribute to FACTOR and Musicaction, funding bodies that support Canadian artists.
The third approach considered is a more involved form of regulation that imposes clearer quotas (similar to CanCon regulations on radio) on streaming platforms.
Andrew Cash says that CIMA is most interested in the second approach, specifically ensuring that streaming services will contribute financially to the sector, similarly to radio broadcasters.
"What we're trying to do is build sustainable careers over time," he says. "The best way for Canadians to hear Canadian music is to have competitive companies that can duke it out with other companies on the global stage, supporting excellent artists that can also compete with the best of everyone else." The way to achieve this, Cash emphasizes, is through investment in Canadian talent and companies.
The report stops short of recommending a particular strategy — though, from the short amount of space it receives, it seems clear Page doesn't support the most regulated third approach — but he emphasizes that the government should consider the need to support exporting Canadian music globally.
For every one stream within Canada, he writes, Canadian artists are getting roughly ten abroad, and any government music strategy should focus on helping Canadian music thrive on the international stage. Cash says that's an industry-wide priority.
As Music Canada's Rogers puts it, "Our regulatory framework should build on streaming’s ability to connect Canadian and Indigenous artists with fans at home and abroad."

Moscow Metro
The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.
What is the kremlin in russia?
The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.
And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.
During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.
There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.
Zodiac Metro
According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
Paleontological finds
Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

Tour Details
Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.
Duration: 2 hours
Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing
This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.
Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.
Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.
Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.
Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating
We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…
This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.
The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.
Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.
The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.
You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.
Physical Rating
Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…
These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.
These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.
These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.
These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.
Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.
Luxury Rating
Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.
To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.
