Sunrise SUP Lagos Caves tour – A truly magical SUP tour watching the Sunrise while paddleboarding along Lagos grottoes and caves!

Nature and SUP lovers this tour is for you! The most magical time to go paddleboarding is at sunrise. Beat the crowds and paddle in one of the most famous coastlines in the world: Ponta da Piedade in Lagos is full of grottoes, caves, natural arches, hidden golden beaches and impressive rock formations. Praia da Dona Ana in Lagos is where we’ll meet and after getting equipped with wetsuit, life-vest, paddle and SUP board, we’ll make a brief SUP lesson on the sand, so that you can fully enjoy this activity in safety on the water.

Then it’s time to paddle away from the shore admiring the sun rising and the colorful show it provides. Lagos’ “Costa D’Oiro” (or Golden Coast) will be shining with the morning sun light making for breathtaking views of the cliffs and rock formations.

The caves and grottoes will be beautiful and quiet too! So that you can paddle and relax at your own pace, without the stress and hassle of the boats later on the day. A number of sea birds will make us company, as well as lots of small fish will be swimming around, you will also see in the distance the typical fishing boats coming back to Lagos from a nights working in the sea. And if you’re feeling adventurous we can make 1 or 2 cliff jumps! Or just have a swim in, nothing beats getting in the sea right in the morning to start the day. You’ll be finishing the tour when everyone else is just waking up! Meaning you still have a full day ahead to enjoy, having already done something great! Oh, did we mention that pictures and videos are included? Yes, our guides will do that for you and you’ll receive them by email afterward! Children can go on the same board with an adult

5 Things To Know Before Your Lagos SUP Tour

Stand up paddleboarding is one of my favorite water sports, so when I had the chance to go on a Lagos SUP tour, I didn’t hesitate to say yes!

This tour takes you paddleboarding along the stunning Algarve coastline to Ponta da Piedade.

You’ll get to see hidden beaches, paddle under natural arches, and explore grottoes, which are only accessible by water.

If you’re planning to go on a stand up paddleboarding tour in Lagos , here’s what to know to prepare yourself and make the most of this adventurous experience.

Lagos Sup Tour: Here’s What You Need To Know

1. you don’t need any experience.

If you want to go on a SUP tour in Lagos, you actually don’t need any prior experience! Most people who take this tour are beginners, so don’t let any fears or inexperience hold you back.

After booking your tour , you will most likely meet your tour guide at Praia da Dona Ana or Praia da Batata . You will get a quick lesson on the beach to learn everything you need to know before getting on the water.

Your guide will demonstrate how to get on your board, how to adjust your paddle to your height, and share other useful tips.

2. SUP at sunrise

One of the best times to go standup paddleboarding in Lagos is during sunrise! I prefer going early in the morning because it’s less windy , which makes the sea much calmer . This means that you won’t have to paddle through any waves!

At sunrise, you will get to see the golden sunlight set on the stunning sandstone cliffs and rock formations. Plus, it’s way less busy at this time as most boats aren’t on the water yet and many people in town are still asleep. This makes it so peaceful!

Tours last for three hours and most sunrise tours start at 6 a.m. during summer, and change with actual sunrise times.

The best part is that you’ll feel accomplished for starting your day early and won’t feel guilty if you go back to your place to take a little siesta.

3. Your chances of falling off your board are probably low…

Most people are scared to go paddle boarding because they don’t want to fall off the board. But, a stand up paddleboards is big and tall as it’s built to be stable on the water .

If you feel like your balance is off, you CAN paddle on your knees ! Your instructor will show you how to do this.

But, even saying these things, there is always a chance you could fall off. The weather could change a bit and the winds can pick up on your way back to Lagos. This means that the water might not be as calm as it was in the morning.

During the group tours I’ve been on, I see 0-2 people fall off. And honestly, the weather is usually nice enough that it’s quite refreshing. So embrace the sea if this happens to you!

4. You get to explore Ponta da Piedade

Ponta da Piedade is one of the best places to visit in Lagos . When you go on a stand up paddleboarding tour from Lagos, you get to explore the area from a different perspective.

The coastline is rugged and absolutely stunning and it’s actually one of the most famous coastlines in the world .

There are so many natural archways and when the tide is low enough you get to paddle underneath them! You also get to stop at some of the hidden beaches along the way.

5. Leave behind items you don’t want to get wet

You will get fitted out with all the equipment you need for your SUP tour in Lagos, including a SUP board, paddle, leash, life jacket, and a wetsuit, if needed.

The only things you need to bring are a towel and a swimsuit , which you should put on before you arrive or get picked up. Oh, and don’t forget to wear sunscreen.

I would also recommend bringing a bottle of water and your own GoPro camera if you want to take your own photos or videos. But, it’s not necessary as they will provide you with some photos of you on the tour !

If you do want to carry some of your own things, I recommend picking up a waterproof dry bag to keep all of your personal items safe and dry.

Who should go on a SUP tour in Lagos?

A SUP tour is best for adults and children 12 years old and up . It’s also best for people who have some swimming experience, but you will wear a life jacket!

Be flexible

One of the top reasons why your tour may be canceled or changed is due to the weather. The Algarve coast can become very windy and this makes paddle boarding very difficult.

Very early start but worth it to beat the summer winds and the crowds. Secret Caves Tour

This tour takes you to a beach in the Costa Vicentina natural park where amazing caves can be explored on top of the paddleboard. The tour takes us along the coastline and explores grottoes, caves, huge cliffs and beautiful rock formations that are almost as beautiful as the ones around Praia D. Ana, Praia do Camilo and Ponta da Piedade in Lagos.

SUP Lake Tour

Barragem de Bravura is the name of the beautiful lake we will do this unique SUP tour at. The calm and clear freshwater lake is the perfect spot for Stand-Up-Paddle beginners, families with kids and people that do not feel comfortable in the open sea. Once you feel confident with your paddling skills you will realize the stunning nature around you. This tour lets you explore the green heart of the Algarve while getting a good workout for your whole body.

SUP River Tour

On this tour we will head to the beautiful Rio de Aljesur where we will start the tour in the green and flourishing nature. Paddling along that river is a great way to start with Stand-Up-Paddle boarding as there are no waves at all and the water is nice and clear. If we are lucky and the conditions allow it we can even try our skills in tiny waves close to the shore at the river mouth or we have the possibility to play around a bit trying some SUP-Yoga or just jumping into the refreshing water.

The conditions of the waves are not the best for it, ( are quite good for regular surfing, but not good at all for sup surfing) and there have no tradition of sup waves in the area, the locals are just in to regular surf, and not friendly at all, with sup surfers. We are a Kitesurf and Wingfoil School in Lagos running also Stand-Up Paddle/SUP Tours at Sunrise in Lagos, Ponta da Piedade.

We offer a wide range of certified Kitesurfing & Wingfoiling  Lessons in Lagos with the  International kiteboarding Organization – IKO and Stand Up Paddling  Tours in Lagos with the A ssociation of Surfing Instructors- ASI , where you will be able to learn, practice and enjoy these modalities on the best beaches, in an extremely safe/fun way and with highly motivated and experienced instructors.

“ Hi! My name is  Diogo Martins,  I started kiting when I was 12yo(2007), in the Alvor lagoon, where we currently teach our classes.  It’s a sport that we all love and want to get involved/learn more! I taught kitesurfing in various countries, until I decided to go back to my homeland and teach in my favourite place. 🙂

As for SUPing, it came later(2015). I have always experienced the coast of Lagos/the caves of Ponta da Piedade in every way possible, but to share and show others the beauty and the essence of this city on the Sunrise SUP Caves Tour, it was a dream come true.

As for wingfoiling as the sport started not long ago, I started with it(2019), adding a great way of enjoying certain wind or waves conditions, creating a perfect balance between the sports.

Our surf camp in Lagos is located in the Algarve in the south of Portugal, about 80 km west of the nearest airport in Faro. On the south coast as well as on the west coast a variety of surf spots for all levels are waiting for you, running perfectly depending on wind and wave conditions. The next spot is only 4 km away from the Surf Mansion. Apart from the breathtaking landscape and the long beaches, Lagos scores with its size of 30.000 inhabitants, with a wide choice of restaurants, bars and vibrant nightlife.

Food & drinks

At our camp you will be offered extended half-board. This includes breakfast, a packed lunch and dinner 5 days a week. For the remaining two days, a culinary journey through the local restaurants is on the menu and we will have dinner together in Lagos. Before each surf course you can look forward to a large balanced breakfast, lovingly prepared with fresh and healthy ingredients, which will recharge your energy stores for the surf sessions. Bread, rolls, cheese, spread, cold cuts, coffee, tea, fresh fruit and muesli are waiting for you. After breakfast you will also prepare your packed lunch, which you can take with you to the surf course. On Saturday evenings we have our traditional BBQ in the camp and on the other four evenings our chef will prepare a warm meal for you. We pay special attention to a varied and high quality cuisine. Vegetarians and vegans are very welcome and we also take into account any special dietary needs (gluten/lactose free or vegan + €5 per day).

Are bed linen and towels provided?

Yes, you can save that space in your luggage for more important things. But please bring a beach towel.

Do I need a car?

Not necessarily! We take care of the transport to the surf spots and occasionally offer a shuttle to the city. However, it is recommended to rent a car in order to be more flexible if you want to explore the Algarve on your own.

The rooms offer accommodation for 1, 2 or 3 guests and have their own (en suite or external) bathroom. Four further double/twin rooms can be found in the cottage, which is also located on the Mansion grounds. The cottage rooms share a bathroom and are minimalistically furnished. In addition, you will find a cozy living and dining area as well as a chillout area.

3-bed room Mansion

The shared room offers space for 3 guests. The rooms are equipped with an en suite or an external (opposite, in the hallway) private bathroom. Fresh towels and bed linen are provided. Ideal for small groups or single travellers.

Double room Mansion

For single travellers or couples who want a little more privacy our surf camp offers double rooms with either a queen-size bed or two single beds. The rooms are equipped with an en suite or an external (opposite, in the hallway) private bathroom. Fresh towels and bed linen are provided. Single occupancy possible at extra charge.

Double room Cottage

For surf travellers or couples who want a little more privacy, there are four double rooms with a choice of queen or twin beds in the cottage on the Mansion grounds. Fresh towels and bed linen are included. The 4 cottage rooms share the bathroom.

In our surf camp everything is about the surf! It is perfect for beginners as well as for advanced surfers. We make sure that the lessons take place when surfing conditions are most suitable for your skills and always adjust your lessons time to the swell, wind and tides. Our instructors will teach you 3 hours a day at a surf spot that suits your skills, such as Cordoama, Amado or one of the many spots on the south coast.

Course days can be booked individually. Our surf coaches are at home here on the south coast, so they know the surrounding surf spots very well. All surf instructors have an ISA, BSA, FPS (at least level 1) or an equivalent license, which also includes lifeguard and didactic training. Besides the certification, all surf instructors have many years of experience in teaching and surfing. To be able to offer an intensive and closely supervised surf course, the surf groups consist of a maximum of 5 people. Twice a week there are also theory lessons and a video analysis. There are also practical units to improve your balance in the camp. During the surf course you will be equipped with high quality equipment from us. From more than 100 surfboards, from softboards for beginners to mini-mals, shortboards and longboards for advanced surfers, we choose the board that fits you best. We also offer experienced surfers a selection of fiberglass boards in different sizes.

Our aim is to take your surfing skills to the next level and to make your surfing holiday unforgettable.

In our surf camp everything is about the surf! It is perfect for beginners as well as for advanced surfers.

We make sure that the lessons take place when surfing conditions are most suitable for your skills and always adjust your lessons time to the swell, wind and tides. Our instructors will teach you 3 hours a day at a surf spot that suits your skills, such as Cordoama, Amado or one of the many spots on the south coast. Course days can be booked individually. Our surf coaches are at home here on the south coast, so they know the surrounding surf spots very well. All surf instructors have an ISA, BSA, FPS (at least level 1) or an equivalent license, which also includes lifeguard and didactic training. Besides the certification, all surf instructors have many years of experience in teaching and surfing. To be able to offer an intensive and closely supervised surf course, the surf groups consist of a maximum of 5 people. Twice a week there are also theory lessons and a video analysis. There are also practical units to improve your balance in the camp. During the surf course you will be equipped with high quality equipment from us. Beginner lessons

Our job in the surf lessons is to encourage and challenge you in such a way that the fun of surfing is always a priority. We teach on softboards which are adjusted to your height and weight. In addition, you will learn about waves and surfing equipment in theory, so that you are well prepared to go surfing on your own after the surf lessons. [/read]

Intermediate lessons

You have already taken part in surfing lessons, you are familiar with the basics and want to develop your surfing? Then the intermediate surf course is the right one for you. Depending on your level of proficiency and experience, our surf instructors will work with you on your surfing style and help you improve your surfing manoeuvres.

The aim is to help you to get along more smoothly in the line-up and in green waves and to make sure that you can make safe bottom and top turns in green waves. We are also working on making sure that you can surf the wave parallel after the turns. In the accompanying theory you will be taught some important surfing maneuvers, which you can later put into practice in the water.

You are an experienced surfer and confident in the ocean with your own equipment? Then surf guiding is the right choice for you. Our guide knows the coast perfectly and takes you to the best spots twice a day. There you will get an introduction about what makes the surf spot special and what to look out for.

Afterwards you have 90 minutes to enjoy the waves before you are taken back to the camp.

Urs, the surf instructor and founder of the surf camp is from Switzerland. He learned to surf in France in 1996 and also worked there as a camp manager. After that he has already run surf camps in Morocco and Bali. Since 2012 he is running the surf camp in Lagos. Here you can find good surf all year round! He is looking forward to welcoming you and showing you the region and the Portuguese lifestyle.

Our chef Conny is originally from Germany. In 1979 she moved to Portugal and has been cooking here in the surf camp since 1995. She is happy to treat you with delicious food and is very considerate of vegans or guests with allergies and different dietary needs.

The portuguese surf coach Pedro has been working here in the surf camp since 2014 and transformed his passion into his career. There is nothing better for him than to see you smiling while surfing.

Our head coach Alex is from Spain, but has lived here in the Algarve since 2016. He knows the coast very well and structures the surf courses in such a way that everyone has the best conditions to develop their surfing skills.

Visit us at the World Surfing Reserve Ericeira: Our beautiful surfhouse with pool and large garden is located in the middle of a well protected reserve, only 40 minutes away from Lisbon. Fantastic waves for every surf level are waiting for you.

A vacation at Surfcamp Esmoriz means checking the waves from the roof terrace or even a room with ocean view if you wish! After all, the next surf spot is right in front of the house. Here you learn to surf in a relaxed atmosphere, without crowded beaches and line-ups. You can easily reach Porto by train and complement your surf trip with sightseeing.
