Classic "im a grown as man Dogg"

Funny. Too vulgar when all is said and done.

I've never seen so many fat black chicks laughing at one time in one crowd. Also I only laughed hard at one joke during the entire DVD, and that was Hughley's "two week notice" bit. Steve Martin's rant about today's rap music was pretty spot on though.

'Kings' rule in concert film that chronicles record comedy tour

the original kings of comedy tour dates

NEW YORK -- Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer and Bernie Mac seem unlikely candidates to fill the bill of "Kings of Comedy." They are not household names. You won't find their faces on the cover of most magazines.

And yet this quartet of comedians managed to gross a whopping $37 million-plus for their recent "Kings of Comedy" tour, playing mostly to black audiences at sold-out arenas around the country -- without major publicity to boot.

Now, a new concert film is giving the rest of America a chance to see what it missed. Directed by Spike Lee, "The Original Kings of Comedy" aims to capture the quartet's outrageous, nostalgic and sometimes raunchy brand of humor, which recalls Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx in musings on sex, family, race and marriage.

"We've proven ourselves, and now we want to introduce ourselves to mainstream white America," said Bernie Mac. "We've done something to be proud of."

When the tour began in 1997, Harvey, who stars in the WB sitcom "The Steve Harvey Show" and is host of the syndicated "Showtime at the Apollo," admits he felt a little uncomfortable with the "Kings" title.

"I think we all thought it was a bit much," he recalled.

But then the box office receipts started coming in -- a comedy-tour record, says the promoter, Walter Latham. Now, the guys feel like royalty -- and aren't shy about saying so.

"There will come a time when someone breaks that record, but for right now, we are the kings ... the numbers don't lie," said Harvey.

Latham says it almost didn't happen. He said that when he first approached the four comedians with the idea, they were hesitant. "They said they would try it out for three shows, and see how it went ... and we ended up doing 59 shows that year."

The "Kings of Comedy" tour ran from 1997 to 1999. Many in the industry doubted it would run for even a year, despite the comedians' celebrity among blacks. Besides Harvey, D.L. Hughley has his own show, "The Hughleys," which was moved to UPN from the ABC network this fall; Cedric the Entertainer stars in Harvey's show; and Bernie Mac has been in several movies, including the Eddie Murphy film "Life," and makes guest appearances on the sitcom "Moesha."

But the tour showed that black performers don't need to cross over to white audiences for success.

"We advertised to black radio," said Hughley, "and they came out and supported us."

Even so, Latham said, there was little support at first for the film version.

"No one in Hollywood believed in the 'Kings of Comedy' movie because they didn't know who these guys were," he said.

Things came together in the end, however; the film is being distributed by MTV Films, a division of Paramount Pictures, and the network featured the comedians in ads for the MTV Movie Awards, and for the film itself.

Bernie Mac, 42, is the most outrageous and raunchy of the four. In his routine, he gleefully talks about beating kids, his sexual escapades and his dysfunctional family -- with enough four-letter words to make Pryor proud. Hughley, 35, is a bit tamer but not much, riffing on his marriage and kids, and picking on audience members who dare to sit where he can see them.

contrast, Cedric the Entertainer (yes, that is his real name) is the calm one, warming up the audience with commentary. Cedric likens his act to that of a prizefighter who wears his opponent down with steady blows before setting up the big punch.

Harvey, 43, serves as host, spreading his act out over the course of the night. "I happen to be the world's greatest host," he bragged. "I had the audience in love with them before I brought them on the stage."

But he also gets some of the biggest laughs, with routines on old school music, church -- and dissing the movie "Titanic."

"What kind of movie would it have been with 3,000 black people on the boat? The big scene with the band playing while the ship was going down? Ain't no way," said Harvey.

Besides breaking records, the "Kings" tour also broke barriers for black comics at a time when opportunities for them have dwindled. Back in the early '90s, black comedy -- and comedy in general -- was booming, in part because of the success of Def Comedy Jam, the profane HBO comic showcase that helped propel acts like Martin Lawrence to stardom.

But besides BET's "Comic View," which frequently reruns clips from old shows, opportunities for black standup comics are fewer now, said Cedric, who has staged his own showcases to provide more venues.

"We've been doing this for 10, 15 years," he said. "These guys (the 'Kings') have two, three hours' worth of jokes ... and that prepares you for the next situation."

The four men have known each other for more than a decade, having performed together on the way up in smoky clubs in mid-size cities. The film documents their camaraderie, showing them cracking jokes off-stage while smoking cigars, playing cards or playing basketball.

"Chemistry is a natural thing that happens," Harvey said, "Chemistry-wise, we jell very well together, because we are veterans of standup, all of us."

The success of the "Kings" tour has already spawned a "Queens of Comedy" tour, which ran earlier this year. Latham also plans to bring back at least a couple of the four comedians for a "Kings and Queens of Comedy" showcase next year.

But Harvey is in no rush to try to duplicate the tour's success.

"From my perspective, I think we should lay off the tour for a while," he said. "I think we should let that record stand."

Original Kings of Comedy: An Iconic Standup Experience

These Kings Certainly Knew How to Make Us Laugh!

It’s been two decades since the release of Spike Lee’s iconic concert film, The Original Kings of Comedy, featuring Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, D.L. Hughley, and Bernie Mac. Since then it has consistently remained one of the most talked-about standup gigs in history – and for good reason. It was nothing short of pure comedy gold!

A Look Back at The Kings of Comedy Tour

The Kings of Comedy tour took place in 2000 and featured a line-up that caught the attention of America and beyond. Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, D.L. Hughley, and Bernie Mac were all Kings in their own right – each bringing something unique to the stage that made for a truly unforgettable event.

Steve Harvey: The King of Clean

Steve Harvey was already an established star when he joined The Kings Of Comedy tour in 2000, having appeared on various TV shows such as The Steve Harvey Show and hosting his eponymous radio show. But his performance on Kings Of Comedy cemented him as one of the kings of clean comedy. With his impeccable timing and quirky ad-libs, he had audiences in stitches with every joke – no matter how cheesy!

Cedric the Entertainer: The King of Kings

Cedric the Entertainer was already a big name on the comedy scene when Kings Of Comedy came around. He had already made his mark in Hollywood with appearances in films like Barbershop, Be Cool, and Johnson Family Vacation. On Kings Of Comedy, he proved why he was one of the Kings – delivering a unique mix of sharp wit, social commentary, and irreverent observations that always had us laughing out loud.

D.L. Hughley: The King of Controversy

D.L. Hughley was known for pushing boundaries and challenging taboos on stage, making him widely popular with fans but not so much with some critics! His material touched upon politics, race relations, and even the controversy surrounding Kings Of Comedy, which was criticized for its all-male lineup. But Hughley’s sharp wit, thought-provoking material, and lightning-fast delivery meant that he could always make an audience laugh no matter the subject.

Bernie Mac: The King of Storytelling

Last but certainly not least, we have Bernie Mac – who brought a totally different energy to Kings Of Comedy. As one of America’s most beloved comedians, Bernie was known for his unique brand of storytelling comedy. He had audiences hanging on to his every word as he regaled them with tales of growing up in Chicago’s South Side and his experiences as a father and husband. His set on Kings Of Comedy was arguably one of his most memorable – which further proved why he was one of the Kings.

The Kings’ Lasting Legacy

The Kings Of Comedy tour may have come and gone over two decades ago, but it has certainly left a lasting legacy. Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, D.L. Hughley, and Bernie Mac remain some of America’s most beloved comedians to this day – with their material still inspiring new generations of comedians worldwide. And The Original Kings Of Comedy documentary remains an iconic part of comedy history – proving that these Kings really did know how to make us laugh!

No wonder “The Kings of Comedy” tour, organized in 1997 by producer Walter Latham, has become the highest-grossing comedy tour in history, with ticket sales exceeding $37 million. Any of its four Kings--Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer and Bernie Mac--in a solo performance would be hilarious, so you can well imagine that the laughter just keeps building as one comedian follows another to create an unforgettable evening.

Spike Lee, no less, has created a dynamite concert film, called “The Original Kings of Comedy,” shot in February during a pair of performances in Charlotte, N.C. The convergence of these sensational comedians is reason enough to film them in performance on the same bill. But this concert film par excellence hopefully will serve another purpose: to allow these Kings of Comedy, all familiar presences on the tube, to reach beyond black audiences and let others know what they’ve been missing by not seeing these guys perform live.

Their humor is of course based on the African American experience, and these men tell it like it is--and how! Their audiences not only deserve honesty, but surely wouldn’t sit still for anything less. (Audiences at Harlem’s landmark Apollo Theater are famous for being as tough as they are enthusiastic.) The Kings use language that TV would never allow but is common in everyday life. Addressing hard-pressed, hard-working black people, they touch upon universal truths about joy and sorrow. Their audiences are not shy about expressing their exhilaration at their sense of recognition in everything these men comment upon in such inspired comic fashion. You recognize too the towering presence of such fearless predecessors as Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx and the one and only Jackie “Moms” Mabley.

The comics share bluntness and a capacity for finding humor in a wide range of circumstances, but their personalities are distinct. Harvey has the smoothness and the maturity--early middle age--to summon memories of popular music of his high school days 25 years ago for an inspired skewering of rap music. Hughley displays an awesome command of comic ammunition, fired in a dizzyingly rapid delivery. His speed also allows him to get away with just about anything, but his colleagues, in their own styles, are no less bold. Cedric the Entertainer offers a fluid drollness, and Bernie Mac has a strong masculine presence but can be as wide-eyed as Mantan Moreland of an earlier era, as he comments on the realities of 25 years of married life.

Not surprisingly, all four comedians find a rich source of humor in comparing the black man or woman with the white man or woman. (It is striking how often these men refer to their mothers and grandmothers--those matriarchal Big Mamas--but scarcely if ever to fathers and grandfathers.) We get a picture of ourselves as making too much of a fuss over trivial matters and of being slow to respond to danger. In short, we see how insulated most white people are to life’s harsher realities and injustices. Hughley tellingly comments on white people’s need to seek out sports for excitement. Black people, he explains, don’t need to go looking for excitement; just driving past a police station and hoping not to get stopped does the trick. Yet the show is distinguished by its lack of anger and bitterness. It’s not that these men don’t harbor such feelings, but rather it’s their particular genius to transform their life experiences into fodder for laughter. “The Original Kings of Comedy” ranks right up there with Pryor’s “Live on Sunset Strip,” Eddie Murphy’s “Raw” and Martin Lawrence’s “You So Crazy.”

* MPAA rating: R, for language and sex-related humor. Times guidelines: Language is strong; some references to sex are very blunt.

Now streaming on:

Harvey is the emcee of Spike Lee's new concert film, which documents a Charlotte, N.C., stop on a concert tour called Kings of Comedy, which has become one of the top-grossing arena acts in the country. He and three other black stand-up comics pack houses with routines that all owe something, sometimes a lot, to Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy , who now have achieved classic status.

The other three performers are D.L. Hughley, Cedric The Entertainer  and Bernie Mac , all different in style, all using material based on African-American life in America and black-white differences. Harvey is the smoothest of the performers, although the most aggressive toward the audience, picking targets in the front row for comments on their hair, clothes and career prospects. Bernie Mac is the most hard-edged, and some of his material ventures away from comedy and into the wounds of real life. He seems at times to be working directly from his autobiography, as when he says he's raising his sister's three kids ("she had some drug problems--you know how that is"). They're ages 2, 4 and 6, he says, running down their problems and proclivities with a bluntness that seems to come not so much from comedy as from exhaustion. We wince a little as he describes the kids (and wonder, since we don't know, if they're real, or fictional, or adapted for purposes of the act). No matter; his material skates close to the edge, as Pryor's did, and we realize what the poet meant when he said we laugh, that we may not cry.

Cedric the Entertainer is perceptive in pointing out the subtle fault lines between black and white culture, and does an extended riff on the difference between what a white person means by "hope" and a black person means by "wish." "Hope" comes across as a bland and pious yearning for the best, while "wish" comes across more as an ultimatum or a dare. To hope someone is on time is to think positively for them; to wish they turn up on time is to yearn for them to get what's coming to them. It's hard to explain, but somehow Cedric's tone of voice does all the lifting.

D.L. Hughley does a very funny explanation of why black people are not enthusiastic bungee jumpers. His material is accessible and mainstream, as when he speculates that Jesus was black, just on the basis of his miracle at the wedding feast: Turning water into wine, he imagines Jesus explaining, "Normally, you know, I don't do this--but go on, keep the party goin'!" Harvey comes on between every act, and does a tightwire act with the audience's affection. There is a point beyond which you cannot kid an audience before it feels picked on, and there's tension in the way Harvey approaches that point and then smiles and releases the tension. He asks one young man in the front row what he does for a living. "Computer school," the guy says, and Harvey tells him that nothing about him seems to say "computer" or "school." This could turn bad, but Harvey is a master of timing and tone, and gets away with it.

"The Original Kings of Comedy" doesn't have the theatrical subtext or, let it be said, the genius of Richard Pryor. But then again Pryor went out for an hour or 90 minutes and just talked. These guys are working in a revue format. I got the feeling that Bernie Mac, working open-ended, free to improvise, would end up in some strange and fraught places, some funny, some just true.

The Original Kings Of Comedy Celebrates 15 Years

He aint heavy. Hes my brother.

A line used by many, but one that has particular significance in the Black community.

A line, adopted by Black America, which spawned movements and was represented by posters and pictures during tough times for Black America.

This was extremely evident in Black Hollywood, where successful stars reached back to support the next generation.

We saw it with Richard Pryor, who opened doors for Eddie Murphy, who opened doors for Chris Rock and the Wayans brothers. You witnessed stars give young talents the chance they needed to start their own careers through minor, yet memorable roles, in their movies: Damon Wayans giving Eddie Murphy the banana in Beverly Hills Cop and Chris Rock as the parking valet in Beverly Hills Cop II.

These small roles helped give rise to new Black comedic talent, particularly in the 1990s, where we witnessed a re-birth of Black entertainment in Hollywood.

We saw comedies like The Cosby Show continue the success of positive Black family-oriented shows like The Jeffersons and give rise to shows like A Different World, The Parent Hood and Family Matters.

But another trend was developing on television, one which saw Black comedians being given the opportunity to become lead characters in their own shows where they were able to incorporate their lives, personalities and stories into the scripts; and they were successful shows for the networks.

Robert Townsend had the aforementioned The Parent Hood, Martin Lawrence gave us Martin and in 1994, Me and the Boys introduced us to one of the biggest names in entertainment today, Steve Harvey.

Harvey has a long history of success in media and entertainment. He is an actor, comedian, author, television host and radio personality. His success and influence is undeniable. In 1996, he gave us The Steve Harvey Show, a long running series which gave people, especially Black people, a glimpse of something special which would arrive four years later, something that would be duplicated by others yet would stand alone as an original triumph.

On August 18th, 2000, the Spike Lee directed The Original Kings of Comedy would debut in theatres, a comedy film which still has us dying with laughter 15 years later. While it was a film, The Original Kings of Comedy was actually a comedy tour featuring four of the biggest names in comedy at the time.

Steve Harvey, Cedric The Entertainer, D.L. Hughley and Bernie Mac were all well known faces; we saw them on Showtime at the Apollo, Comic View and Def Comedy Jam. We knew Steve and Cedric from The Steve Harvey Show and watched D.L. on The Hughleys, but Bernie Mac was different. He was more raw and didnt have his own show like the others, but we knew him because all of his roles were memorable for the grit and humor he instilled in them. Uncle Flip from Above the Rim, Pastor Clever from Friday, Dollar Bill from The Players Club and then finally earning a role on television as Uncle Bernie, a recurring character on Moesha.

Recorded from the performances in Charlotte, NC in February of 2000, The Original Kings of Comedy gave fans a concert film that transported audiences back to 1987 and Eddie Murphy: Raw.

Steve, D.L., Cedric and Bernie used their interests, characters and families. They discovered how humor could be injected in to, and extracted from, their real life experiences and situations, resulting in those who would normally find their routines offensive dropping their guards and shedding tears of laughter. It was a formula successfully employed by Chris Rock in Bring the Pain and Bigger and Blacker, where he broke down reality through race and humor.

Steve Harvey showed us how old school music would make you feel things that new school artists couldnt, and he made you stand up and sing in appreciation when Earth, Wind and Fire asked Would you mind?

He showed early on that he would be a source for relationship advice through the lyrics of Lenny Williams. He joked about Rae Carruth and made it funny. Normally when youre running from the law, you wanna get a passport. Go to Canada. Brazil. Mexico. Naw nah. Not Rae-Rae. Rae-Rae took his ass to Nashville! He had us dying as he told us how Kool and the Gang would have been long gone if they were on the Titanic.

D.L. broke down the difference between firing a white person and a black person and explained how white people do things for excitement while Black people have enough excitement in their lives doing regular things. He touched on police brutality, mentioning trying to take out my wallet without getting shot 41 times, an example of how he would eventually become a voice speaking out on current events, and not just through comedy.

Cedric the Entertainer followed and let it be known that Black people run (Get Lisa!) and arent going to be left behind. Yall moving to the moon, dammit we coming to the moon. We be right behind you in space shuttles with Cadillac grills!

His memorable explanation of the differences in creed will always be repeated because of its hilarious truth- White people hope things dont go wrong. Black people, we dont live by the hope creed. Black people got a totally different creed we live by. Its more confrontational. Its the wish factor. Black people dont hope, we wish. We wish a mutha f****r would be in our seat!

He went on to joke about the pitfalls facing a Black president (in regards to the national debt, Tell em I aint got it. But I could put something on it.), Black people in sports (downhill skiing in church shoes and a brother skating in hockey with no stick) and my personal favorite, being a “grown ass man.”

Bernie was a talent we lost way too soon. He was someone who you could tell would always be himself no matter the forum. He never compromised his character or blunt personality and fans loved him for it. He was the man who proclaimed that he says what you want to say, but cant.

Who else could we visualize talking about beating up bad ass kids and making us laugh about it? This is the man who said If youre grown enough to talk back, youre grown enough to get f**ked up!

We loved his story about how he took in his sisters kids because she was on drugs, a story that ended up being the premise for his 2001 show The Bernie Mac Show, which had a successful six- year run. Him downstairs and the two-year old ringleader looking at him like he was short were absolutely hysterical.

The Original Kings of Comedy appears to be the launching pad by which these men elevated their careers to the next level. Steve Harvey has gone on to become one of the busiest and most successful men in entertainment today; he hosts two television shows and one radio show, authored two successful books, executive produced the movie Think Like a Man which was based upon one of his books and has won multiple Emmy Awards and NAACP Image Awards. He also continues to expand his mentoring program through the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation, proving that he is committed to giving back.

D.L. Hughley has gone on to host the nationally syndicated D.L. Hughley Show, wrote a book, hosted the CNN show D.L. Hughley Breaks the News and starred in a number of successful television comedy specials.

Cedric the Entertainer has hosted Who Wants to be a Millionaire, starred in the Barbershop movies, created his widely acclaimed Cedric The Entertainer: Taking You Higher comedy special, appeared in dozens of movies and is now in the fourth season of his show The Soul Man on TV Land.

Bernie Mac appeared in all three of the Oceans movie series with George Clooney and played his trademark self in many other movies before sadly passing away on August 9th, 2008, in his hometown of Chicago.

The Original Kings of Comedy was a monetary success. Produced on a budget of $3 million, it earned $11 million opening weekend and grossed over $36 million overall; and that doesnt include the revenues from the tour itself.

But it was more than just a comedic film. It was an original idea that spawned spin-off projects including The Queens of Comedy, Original Latin Kings of Comedy and the Blue Collar Comedy Tour.

It was a project that incorporated the concept of six degrees, as all of the comedians had overt connections to other comedians, both past and present. And it was a manifestation of the concept He aint heavy. Hes my brother as they brought each other up while bringing up those who followed after them, something which they still practice today.

I was fortunate enough to see them live when they came to NYC that year (and I bought my tickets on my card Ced, seats 4 and 5) and fifteen years later I still laugh at those same jokes. Thats how you know that it was special. When you repeat something from the film, others acknowledge it because they know where its from. Say grown ass man, dawg or theres going to be some furniture moving! and youll most likely receive a laugh, a laugh which brings you together with the person who understands its derivation.

Bernie Mac said it best with Were the same, but we do things different.

For The Original Kings of Comedy thats just what they did and they did it their way. Never compromising their character or opinion for the green.

And for that, were all laughing as thanks.

With two 1-hour specials Red-Nexican & ALMA Award winning Hick-Spanic that aired on Showtime, Comedy Central & NETFLIX, Alex Reymundo’s comedy style appeals to all demographics. Three words describe him best … FUNNY as HELL. Alex Reymundo and Ron White own & operate Number JUAN Tequila, a small batch, hand crafted, award winning Tequila.

Alex’s exposure to LIVE standup began in Arlington, TX in 1988. Reymundo proudly boasts about serving Ron White Tequila & a Budweiser right before he hit the stage on Tatersalad’s amateur comedy debut. The two Texas comics emerged & traveled the nation together for the first few years of their early careers. Five years of road gigging throughout the mid-west led Reymundo to Los Angeles where he discovered an exploding Latino comedy scene. It wasn’t long before Alex was touring with Paul Rodriguez. The timing was right, Alex emerged and hit the national scene on Paramount Picture’s “The Original Latin Kings of Comedy” along side Paul Rodriguez, Cheech Marin, George Lopez & Joey Medina.

Reymundo showcased on HBO as part of the line up of P. Diddy’s “Bad Boy’s of Comedy”. Over the next few years Alex premiered two 1-hour comedy specials Hick-Spanic & Red-Nexican.

Reymundo was seen by 6 million viewers on CMT (2011) with Ron White’s Salute to the Troops. Alex played as Producer & Host on “The Payaso Comedy Slam” (Showtime & Comedy Central) & “The Latin Diva’s of Comedy” (Showtime). Reymundo used his producer skills to launch & CEO Premium Tequila label, “Number JUAN Tequila” that he co-owns with Ron White.
