the stranglers feline tour

Review by Paul Monkhouse for MPM

With the release of their seventh album on new label Epic Records, legendary punks The Stranglers wanted to shake things up a bit, exploring new sonic territories and pushing their own boundaries.

To say it must have been a surprise to those at their new home would be an understatement but they, as did the fans, released that this was one band unafraid of moving forward and so it was with ‘Feline’. Now re-released in gorgeous red and translucent marbled double vinyl, this 40th anniversary edition provides an ideal opportunity to reacquaint yourself with this, to some, seismic shift in their path.

With a much heavier use of synthesisers and electronic drums, ‘Feline’ delved into much more of a modern European sensibility than before, keys player David Greenfield a more dominant force in the mix.

Also here was a heavier use of acoustic guitars, the whole adding a bit more pastoral colour to the whole, the album a less snarling entry into their catalogue The critics didn’t know what to make of it at the time, the reviews mixed, but it was solidly embraced by the fans and sold better than previous release ‘La Folie’, despite the 1981 album having the massive ‘Golden Brown’ on it.

From the moment the mesmerising cool of ‘Midnight Summer Dream’ snaked its way out the speakers, it was clear that this was new territory, the electronica infused ‘It’s A Small World’ feeling really ground breaking at the time.

As well as the distinctive tones of Hugh Cornwell, Jean-Jacques Burnell takes lead vocals on single ‘European Female’, the smooth vibe of the song suiting the exotic approach, Burnell’s ability with the bass properly highlighted on the burbling and upbeat ‘Ships That Pass In The Night’ that came before it.

Whilst this was still very much a Stranglers album, anchored by Jet Black’s swinging drum style, there’s a wilful and mischievous continental feel here too, the atmospheric ‘Let’s Tango In Paris’ and the backing vocals of Anne Von Stern and France L’Hermitte on ‘Paradise’ placing it squarely away from their Guildford roots.

With a zeitgeist catching ‘All Roads Lead To Rome’, keys wizardry of ‘Blue Sister’ and grand closer ‘Never Saying Goodbye’ dazzling with its mix of instrumentation and sounds to startling, sometimes almost jarring, effect it was the band at their most experimental.

the stranglers feline tour

For those lucky enough to get the initial batch of ‘Feline’ when initially released , the unique and arty ‘Aural Sculpture Manifesto’ single sided single is amongst the reproduced wonders squeezed onto the second disc of this new set. Along with different mixes, this second slice of vinyl includes the pairing of the lush duo ‘Savage Breast’ and ‘Pawsher’ and the reggae tinged ‘Permission’ to further enhance listening pleasure.

All in all, it’s a fascinating snapshot of the band at the time and something that may lack the immediacy and fire of their previous work but certainly bears repeat plays to absorb all that is going on here. A thing of its own curious beauty, this new two disc edition of ‘Feline’ should find its home with many a lover of quality music, seeking something just a little out of the norm. Always leaders, never followers, The Stranglers remain a gem in our cultural heritage.

🐈‍⬛

This was the band’s seventh studio album and the first since moving to Epic Records, reaching #4 in the UK Album chart. Feline is now available, courtesy of BMG, on limited red and pink transparent double vinyl and 2CD edition both featuring a wealth of bonus material from this era of the band.

The Stranglers is a British pop punk/ rock band from Guilford, Surrey. The band currently consists of Jet Black, Jean-Jacques Burnel and Baz Warne.

The band was created in 1974, originally called The Guilford Stranglers by drummer Brian Duffy (aka Jet Black), and was also joined by bassist/vocalist Jean-Jacques Burnel, guitarist/vocalist Hugh Cornwell and keyboardist Hans Wämling (who was replaced a year later by Dave Greenfield). Having played as the opening band for some of the biggest punk rock artists like The Ramones and Patti Smith, they also became associated with the burgeoning scene; however, because each musician had a background in either jazz or classical, they were questioned about the authenticity of pure punk rock.

Their earliest albums were released in a span of 13 months, “Rattus Norvegicus,” “No More Heroes,” and “Black and White” and were all highly successful. Despite strong record sales, however, their Monty-Python-esque personas gained mixed reviews, further adding to the run ins with media that they had. Throughout the 70s they spent a chunk of time touring in Japan and taking part in the growing alternative music scene; consequently, they were the only foreign band that took part in the scene.

During 1979 Burnel released a solo album, “Euroman Cometh,” and had been playing with the band ARB, but that did not deter The Stranglers, as a year later, they released “The Raven.” Because of the success of the album, in addition to the success of all their other albums, they were given free creative freedom for the next album, resulting in “The Gospel According to the Meninblack,” a concept album about religion. Unfortunately, the record didn’t do so well and was their lowest placing album, however they “redeemed” themselves with their “La Folie” release in 1981.

The success of “La Folie” attracted various music labels, and eventually The Stranglers signed with Epic Records, who gave them artistic freedom. Their first album with Epic was “Feline,” released in 1983; and while it didn’t quite meet expectations, still fared well. Together they released three more albums, and in 1990 Cornwell left the band to pursue a solo career, leaving the band to recruit John Ellis to replace him, and added Paul Roberts for vocal parts. This new lineup recorded four albums through a six-year period. By 2000 Baz Warne stepped in to take over John Ellis’ spot (who had left the band), and the band had a newfound success streak throughout 2004 and 2005.

Despite rumors of a retirement in 2008, the band continued to tour and play worldwide festivals, and in 2010 released a compilation album. Following “Decades Apart” they released “Giants” in 2012, and set out on tour throughout the United Kingdom in 2013.

Live reviews

This was my 24th Stranglers gig, having first seen them back on the No More Heroes Tour in the late 1970s when I was still at school.

Many (former) fans complain that the band are not the same, or as good, as they wee when Hugh Cornwell was dinger-guitarist, before leaving in 1990. yet their last two albums with the original line-up were awful; they had clearly run out of ideas and steam.

Now, however, with Baz Warne on guitar (a black telecaster, like Hugh played) and vocals, The Stranglers are rejuvenated and re-energised, and some of their newer material (Relentless, Freedom is Insane) is as good as their early material.

So their Bristol 2017 gig was superb - one of the best gigs I've seen them do.

As they wee not promoting a new album, they trawled their back catalogue, and even played some rarer tracks, such as Bear Cage. The sound was crystal clear, the musicianship faultless - Jean-Jacques Burnel remains a fantastic and mesmerising bassist, the bass low-slung as he prowled the stage, and did the occasional trademark karate-kick while playing - and the band were clearly enjoying themselves, joking and bantering with each other, and with the audience.

During Peaches, Baz cheekily sang: 'I can think of a lot worse places to be... like the f***** Colston Hall', a wry did at an all-seater venue across the road, which tends to have AOR bands!!

A suberb gig from a band enjoying a new lease of life.

The Stranglers were the first concert I ever went to. I was about 15 at the time, and could not have asked for a better first experience of live music! They were great fun and they worked so well in the small arena I saw them in. The atmosphere was amazing, and everyone was having an amazing time. The lead singer really engaged with the music, and the most memorable part of the concert was when the keyboardist downed a pint during his solo. This meant as soon as they were playing again in my area two years later, I didn't hesitate to buy another ticket. They were just as good the second time, and I would definitely buy their tickets again. Even if you don't know their music so well, they are great fun to listen to, and you will definitely enjoy yourself at their concert. What I also liked about them is that yes, they played most their well known songs, and they had the whole audience joining in- no one was standing still enjoying the music, unfortunately that's not possible!- but they also played some of their less famous songs, which were just as enjoyable. The lead signer didn't hold back, he was enjoying the music as much as we were, and dancing around stage. It was obvious how much he loved performing, which gave the concert that extra edge which you don't always find. Would definitely recommend without a doubt!

It’s widely agreed that 1977 was the year that marked the birth of punk as we know it, and even if that’s primarily because it’s the year that saw the release of Never Mind the Bollocks, it’s no coincidence that another seminal album of the era, No More Heroes by The Stranglers, was also released around that time. That was already the Guilford four-piece’s second album, and they’ve gone on to show scant regard for what the Sex Pistols did, where record releases are concerned; their most recent full-length, 2012’s Giants, was their seventeenth. Celebrating their fortieth anniversary as a band this year, two of the original members remain, and Dave Greenfield’s been involved for thirty-nine of those years himself; you have to admit, though, that the departure of Hugh Cornwell in 1990 means that this isn’t quite the real Stranglers. Try telling that to the crowd that continue to pack rooms across the UK, with the band touring pretty much annually; after replacing Paul Roberts in 2006, Baz Warne is doing a fine job of handling classics like ‘No More Heroes’ and ‘Golden Brown’, and you get the impression that there’d be no shortage of job applications should he ever step down - The Stranglers are just one of those bands with a fanbase that refuses to let them go.

After taking multiple trips overseas to see The Men In Black, I was extremely excited to see them locally. It’s been a long, long time since I’ve seen them in Los Angeles.

I can empathically say they did not disappoint. Not only did we get to hear the staples, “Grip”, “No More Hero’s”, “Duchess”,”Golden Brown”, etc. We were given the gift of two new unrecorded cuts that sounded great. The caveat was their delving into the songbook and playing exceptional cuts that surprised even me. “Time To Die” from Stranglers In The Night. Multiple cuts from the outstanding album The Raven including “Baroque Bordello” which blew me away. They even dusted off “Nubiles”.

These boys tour relentlessly and it shows. Tight as a frogs behind, they tore through the 2 hour set with such ferocity the hairs on the back of my neck were standing on end the entire show.

The greatest and arguably the most underrated band in the world truly gave us a gift long overdue.

The band wee great, but unfortunately due to mixing or otherwise, the vocals keyboards and guitars were drowned out by way too much bass. I know Stranglers music has a bassy bass, but either the speaker system couldn’t handle the bass or the mixing was a disaster.

A pity, as in spaces where the bass hadn’t kicked in, the vocals, keyboard and guitar were strong and high quality. I was standing beside the mixing booth, and several people were complaining in my vicinity. Don’t think it was because of my location as the opening show by Therapy? was well mixed.

Should have been more of a treat, as the Olympia is a pretty special and intimate venue. Baz Warne did a good job on vocals, but I’d really like to hear Hugh Cornwall perform the originals.

Wasn’t sure what to expect as it’s been a while ( about 40 years) but couldn’t resist because they came up to Aberdeen. Glad I did tho wasn’t disappointed!

Audience of a certain age but a packed venue with great atmosphere and a wee bonus of Dr Feelgood to start with !

Was good to hear the old numbers but enjoyed all the new stuff to ! And tho slightly different still unmistakably The Stranglers !!

Might be a bit sad but I really enjoyed the birthday roadie coming on and dancing to Bring on the nubiles in a fetching outfit ! It is a vision that will probably remain with me for a while p

Great gig! Great venue! Great sound! Great band in real fine form! Superb setlist playing mainly songs from the first four albums and a selection from the following ones! It was a brilliant concert where clearly they were having as much fun playing as us listening! The crowd was very enthusiastic and participated a lot, probably due to the fact a coach or two of english fans came specially for the Paris event... I do hope they’ll continue rocking the way they did, I’ll catch them next time too, for sure. (I’ve seen them 5 or 6 times, first time 1983 Feline Tour)

Peaches changed my life back in the day and I have always wanted to see them. It’s taken 40+ years but better late than never. Being a massive Linkin Park fan I am now booking to see anyone I have or do like. You just never know.

I thought The Stranglers were excellent last night. A lot of punk bands have disappointed in the past at live concerts but these guys are top class musicians. That’s why they are in my list of fav bands. I am a regular at the Brixton O2 and I like it as a venue. No more Hero’s ? You will always be my hero’s.

Not the normal show from the boys covered a lot songs that if a life long fan of them would know but if expecting a run through of the normal set people may have left disappointed.I really enjoyed it lost how count on how many times I have seen them a long time since Ive heard Nubiles and when Hugh turned up the bass before no more heroes had the whole place reverberating. Not the best gig I’ve seen from them but still a class act .

Great gig in Limerick. Must admit, I was one of those fans who always thought that without Hugh they band would never be the same.... But how wrong I was. In Baz they now have the perfect replacement. JJ killed it with 5min.

Base as always was mean. Drummer was class act. Still tight and sharp after all these years. Also good to see a whole new generation enjoying this great music.

The Stranglers // 50 Years In Black Anniversary Tour – Live Review // The Ulster Hall // Belfast

the stranglers feline tour

The Stranglers – 50 Years In Black – Anniversary Tour , rolls off the tongue but is no mean feat.

What can you say about the impact that a band such as The Stranglers have made on the musical landscape over the last 5 decades, what their music means to those gathered this evening in the hallowed halls of The Ulster Hall.

You can see it far and wide on the faces of those crammed into this iconic venue exactly what it means, smiles far and wide, old friends gathered to celebrate the soundtrack to their youth, and in tow, a youthful generation keen to learn from their wiser and often better-looking elders just how important such a soundtrack is in defining your musical journey ahead.

Tonight is a very special evening indeed, a night of two halves, the first kicking off at 8 pm sharp mostly focused on their most recent recording ‘Dark Matters’ and part two a set packed with classics that get the hearts racing. As we prep for the evening to kick off I scan the room and see the gathered masses huddled in their groups, hugging one another as they catch up with the old crew, back at The Ulster Hall once again reliving their hay-days, Stranglers T-Shirts can be seen far and wide as they await the house lights dropping and the band taking to the stage.

For five decades, The Stranglers have captivated audiences with their distinctive sound, blending punk rock with elements of new wave, post-punk, and beyond. Their music, characterized by raw energy, biting lyrics, and infectious rhythms, has left an indelible mark on the music industry and influenced generations of musicians.

As the lights dimmed, a roar of applause erupted, signalling the band’s arrival. Jean-Jacques Burnel’s bass rumbled through the hall, Baz Warne’s guitar sliced through the air with razor-sharp precision, Toby Hounsham’s keyboards added an ethereal layer, and Jim McAulay’s drums provided the driving force behind it all. Together, they launched into their set with a ferocity that belied their years.

From classics like “No More Heroes” and “Golden Brown” to deeper cuts like “Hanging Around” and “Peaches”, each song was delivered with unwavering intensity, evoking a potent mix of nostalgia and adrenaline. The band’s onstage chemistry was palpable, a testament to their decades-long partnership and mutual respect.

As the night unfolded, The Stranglers took the audience on a journey through their illustrious career, weaving together a tapestry of sonic textures and lyrical poetry. Every chord struck a chord within the crowd, every lyric reverberated with significance.

But it wasn’t just about the music – it was about the memories, the stories, the moments shared between band and fans. It was about the connection forged through music, transcending barriers of time and space.

As the final notes of a 29-song rollercoaster set of musical emotions echoed through the hall, there was a collective sense of euphoria – a celebration of 50 years of defiance, creativity, and passion. The Stranglers had once again proven why they remain one of the most enduring and influential bands in rock history.’

As I stepped out into the cool Belfast night, heart still pounding with the residual energy of the performance, I couldn’t help but feel grateful – grateful for the music that had shaped my life, grateful for the memories made, and grateful for The Stranglers, who had provided the soundtrack to it all. Here’s to another 50 years in black.

In the '70s, The Stranglers hitched their reputation to the emerging U.K. punk scene, which favored short, concise, and catchy songs. Yet Hugh Cornwell and company were always more ambitious, and that ambition led to highly experimental works that either sent the band soaring to new heights or crashing into a barrage of confused, often negative reviews. Many of The Stranglers' records are considered "concept albums," yet few fans have been able to figure out what those concepts are. Feline, however, is a tour de force, an album far removed from punk; it's orchestrated with acoustic instruments and synthesizers for a deliberately low-key vibe that's best expressed in songs such as "Let's Tango in Paris" and "The European Female (In Celebration Of)." The addition of "Golden Brown" was an attempt by the U.S. record label to have a hit with a song from The Stranglers' previous album, La Folie, which at the time hadn't been released in the States.

Khabarovsk, Russia fascinates visitors with its unusual heritage and fabulous untouched nature. Tourists are drawn to the native culture, eclectic architecture and mesmerizing waters in this off-the-beaten-track destination, which promises a unique and memorable vacation.

As the center of Russia’s far eastern region of Khabarovsk Krai, the city offers celebrations throughout the year which are sure to give added flair to your trip, from traditional culture days to large-scale food fests. It is easy to keep a full itinerary during your stay thanks to its many theaters, museums, restaurants, workshops and quest rooms. Guests who want a more relaxed holiday can venture into the serenity of Khabarovsk nature, including the coast of the Sea of Japan or one of the region’s many picturesque lakes .

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

  • Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
  • Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

Khabarovsk, Russia

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

  • Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
  • Triad Pantomime Theater;
  • Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
  • White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.

Located at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, Khabarovsk (6140 kilometers from Moscow) is the second largest city in the Russian Far East after Vladivostok. Having grown from a small military post in the middle of the 19 th  century, the city got its name from the famous Russian explorer Yerofei Khabarov, who surveyed the Amur River. Currently Khabarovsk is the administrative center of the Far Eastern Federal District.

Where to go on a first date with the city

The city was founded by Count Nikolai Muravyov-Amursky and the main street is named in his honor. Modern buildings and shopping centers coexist with old stone houses of gray and red. A monument to this famous Russian statesman can be found in the city’s Central Park. This statue can also be seen on the 5,000-ruble banknote.

The best way to explore Khabarovsk is on foot, beginning at Lenin Square and working your way towards the banks of the Amur River. The two main boulevards, Amursky and Ussuriisky, run parallel to each other. The architecture on Lenin and Serysheva streets, with its mostly Stalin-era structures, differs from the beautiful pre-revolutionary buildings on ul. Muravieva-Amurskogo. The Amursky and Ussuriisky boulevards did not exist until the mid-1960s.

Khabarovsk is not a typical Russian city along the Trans-Siberian Railway. The unusual fusion of Russian and Chinese cultures is felt in the food, culture and even lifestyle of its residents. Japanese touches complement this picture in the form of blossoming cherry trees and cars with steering wheels on the right hand side. That Khabarovsk has such a strong Asian influence should not seem surprising, as the city is located only 17 kilometers from the state border with China. The nearest Chinese settlement, Fuyuan, is 65 kilometers down the river from Khabarovsk.

Khabarovsk’s gem is its picturesque river embankment and the Amursky rail and road bridge, which is also depicted on the 5,000-ruble banknote. Just like the Eiffel Tower, this bridge won the gold medal of the World Exhibition in Paris in the early 20 th  century.

Khabarovsk's museums

the stranglers feline tour

Khabarovsk became famous during the Soviet period for a popular song about border guards that stand on the "high banks of the Amur" and protect the motherland. It is not hard to find old cannons on display in the city that were fired during the Russo-Japanese War.

At the present time Khabarovsk is the headquarters of Russia’s Far Eastern Military District.

The Military Historical Museum of the Far Eastern Military District depicts in great detail everything you ever wanted to know about the formation and development of the army in the Far East. Models of weapons from different years are exhibited over the museum’s 13 halls and heavy military equipment is placed in the courtyard of an observation deck. The museum itself is located in a historic building right on the bank of the Amur River.

The Far Eastern Art Museum, also known as the "Far East Tretyakov Gallery" features original works of ancient Russian art, as well as local artists from the Amur Region. Among the artists on display are Ivan Aivazovsky, Ivan Shishkin, Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov, Isaak Levitan, Alexander Benois, Apollinaris Vasnetsov and Mikhail Vrubel. Many of these works of art came to the Far East from museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The Khabarovsk Regional Museum holds collections of flora and fauna, ethnography exhibits of indigenous peoples and Slavic settlers, and displays by paleontologists and geologists that tell the city’s story from its foundation. The only archaeological museum in the Far East is the Okladnikov Museum, which features 120,000 ancient artifacts pertaining to the Amur Region.

For those traveling with children, Khabarovsk has special kid-friendly attractions including an aquarium featuring fresh water fish of the Amur River basin, as well as the Gaidar Amusement Park and the Khabarovsk State Circus.

A living museum of Far Eastern flora can be found at the Khabarovsk Arboretum, established as an experimental laboratory in 1896. It has collected about 300 plant species that grow in the Ussuri taiga as well as those from the Himalayas, Central Asia and North America.

Khabarovsk is known for its parks such as Dynamo or Yuri Gagarin Park. The Central Park of Culture and Relaxation is perfect for taking leisurely strolls and leads to the river station located within the park, where you can take a boat ride on the Amur River. Especially memorable is taking a walk along the river at night, when Khabarovsk is illuminated by hundreds of colored lights. In the park there is also an observation deck that offers a spectacular view of the Amur.

The cultural center of the Far East

The oldest Orthodox Church in Khabarovsk is a Church of St. Innocentius  of Irkutsk, erected in 1870 in honor of the patron saint of Siberia and the Far East. The impressive Holy Transfiguration Cathedral (its height with golden domes is 95 meters), built from the donations of inhabitants of the region, is the third largest temple in Russia after Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral and St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

Several major theaters operate in Khabarovsk, which is often called the cultural center of the Far East. These include the Khabarovsk Regional Musical Theater performing classic operetta and musical comedy, and the Regional Drama Theatre featuring international and domestic classics. There is also the Triad professional mime theater, which offers unusual performances in interesting interiors.

Why you should climb the Khabarovsk cliff

the stranglers feline tour

Khabarovsk is hot and humid in the summer with temperatures reaching 30 C and cold and dry in the winter with the average temperature being -24 C. However, the temperatures often drop below -30, making Khabarovsk the coldest city with a population of 500,000 or more in the world. There are massive ice sculptures on Lenin Square from January until the spring thaw in April as part of the annual Amur Crystal and Ice Fantasy festivals. City Day, celebrated on the last Saturday of May, is a good reason to visit Khabarovsk at the beginning of summer.

No matter the season, if it is clear, then climb the Khabarovsk cliff (ul. Shevchenko 15), a true symbol of the city. A famous building was constructed here on a rocky promontory 70 years ago by an architect named Starikov. At first it was a station for military observation, later becoming a rescue station. After the building was transferred to Khabarovsk Central Park of Culture and Recreation, a viewing platform was added that now offers the best panoramic views of the Amur River. Take a selfie here with a view of the Amur River at the monument to Count Muravyov-Amursky.
