The Works Tour

The tour was notable for the grand stage designs, large venues, and a diverse setlist. Songs like Great King Rat , Keep Yourself Alive , and Liar — all of which had been left off the band's setlist for years— would appear in shortened forms during the tour.

Several concerts from the tour saw release in various formats. A recording of the band's concert at the Rio de Janeiro was released as Rock in Rio on vinyl and DVD formats. Another DVD was released from a concert in Tokyo titled We Are the Champions: Final Live in Japan .

History [ ]

Stage design [ ].

The stage design was based on a scene from Fritz Lang's  Metropolis  with huge rotating cog-wheels at the rear of the stage and a brightly lit cityscape and a mural based on the background from the Radio Ga Ga music video. The huge wheels behind the stage (modelled after the ones on The Works album cover) rotate at mostly random times - usually because they are turned manually by various crew members such as Roger's tech Chris "Crystal" Taylor whenever they have a free moment.

The lighting rig was one of the largest that Queen would use throughout their career, featuring a bird-like design adorned with red, green, white, blue, and yellow lights. The top portion moves up and down resembling the pizza oven from the Jazz tour . This was the first lighting rig used by the band that was controlled via a computer system.

Performances [ ]

The Works, although not one of Queen's most diverse albums, proved that the band still had it's rock and pop sensibilities that went virtually unseen during the commercial failure of the Hot Space album (and subsequently the Hot Space tour). This combination of chart-dominating songs like Radio Ga Ga, Hammer To Fall, and I Want To Break Free made the album a worldwide success when it released on 27 February 1984.

On the 12th of May 1984, Queen appeared at the Golden Rose Pop Festival in Montreux, miming 4 songs from their recently-released album. The tour proper began in Brussels on the 24th of August 1984.

Initially, at the start of the tour, the band were all in good form, especially Freddie, as this night in Brussels is often referred to one of his best post-prime performances (AKA any outstanding performance post-Milton Keynes). He's in great form, nailing songs like Seven Seas of Rhye and It's A Hard Life. Unfortunately, his voice would quickly wear out, due to his frequent partying, smoking/drinking habits and his poor singing technique, which took a toll on his voice for this tour, resulting in his voice practically being worn out by the third night in Birmingham, even remarking before It's A Hard Life, "If I don't hit this first note, I'll kill myself!" He hits the note, although strained, prompting a quick switch to falsetto for the rest of the intro. Speaking of the third night in Birmingham, it is on this night that the band switches from Sheer Heart Attack to Jailhouse Rock as an encore.

Compared to Freddie, John, Roger and Brian are still in great form. However, Fred's vocals are still in for a rough time, especially on the four London concerts. After the second night, which was on Fred's 38th birthday, a massive party is held, and Fred gets trashed. This leaves his voice almost completely shot for the third night, where he even skips lines in Staying Power. His voice starts to recover by the first night in Milan, however, two notable things happen on this night. First, Staying Power sees it's last performance tonight, and Fred does alright with it. However, it is also here that the band start losing steam, and start playing more "by-the-books".

As unfortunate as it seems, Queen were going through a jaded period in 1984, and this almost certainly worsened in 1985. Fights between the band members were never more common and if Live Aid didn't happen, it's almost certain they'd have split up.

Unfortunately, the band's cycle of mediocrity continues until Leiden, on the 20th, where they sound more reinvigorated, and Freddie, for the tour at least, sounds good. Brian plays a verse and chorus of '39 on his acoustic guitar, with Freddie throwing the few words in he remembers, as he hadn't sung it in 5 years. However, this would soon change. The next night, a second night in Brussels, Freddie is once again in poor shape. This is ironic, considering on the first night, he sounded the best he had since Milton Keynes. And it would soon worsen on the next night, in Hanover. The band were going through the motions here, and Freddie sounds pretty bad too. However on this night, a major incident takes place at this show.

Due to prior damage in his knee, it was tough for Fred to navigate the stairs and platforms of the stage. At the end of Hammer to Fall, Freddie falls down the stairs of the stage. This injures his leg and he and the rest of Queen convene and they axe Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Radio Ga-Ga, I Want to Break Free, and Jailhouse Rock. Brian flubs his We Will Rock You solo out of anxiety, presumably to get Freddie to the hospital as soon as possible.

After this incident, Freddie is fitted with a leg brace, and the tour picks up again at Berlin's Deutschlandhalle on the 24th. From this night onwards to Stuttgart on the 27th, the band seem to be putting in more effort, with Freddie making a definite improvement. However, this resurgence in vigor is lost on the two nights in Vienna on the 29th and 30th respectively. While only Freddie sounds monotonous on the first, everyone sounds uninspired on the second night. After this, Queen would go to play 9 controversial shows in Sun City.

Editorial Reviews

DYNAMIC SOUTH AFRICAN SHOW FROM THE 1984 WORKS TOUR In February 1984, Queen released their eleventh studio album, The Works, which included the successful singles Radio Ga Ga , Hammer to Fall and I Want to Break Free . Despite these hit singles, the album failed to do well in the US, where the cross-dressing video for I Want to Break Free a parody of the British soap opera Coronation Street proved controversial and was, ludicrously, banned by MTV, while in the UK the release went triple platinum and remained on the albums chart for two years. That year, Queen began The Works Tour , the first to feature keyboardist Spike Edney as an extra live musician. The tour featured nine sold-out dates in October in Bophuthatswana, South Africa, at the arena in Sun City. Upon returning to England, the band were the subject of criticism, having played in South Africa during the height of apartheid and in violation of worldwide divestment efforts and a United Nations cultural boycott. The band responded to the critics by stating that they were playing music for fans in SA, and they also stressed that the concerts were played before integrated audiences. Queen donated to a school for the deaf and blind as a philanthropic gesture but were fined by the British Musicians' Union nevertheless. Despite the politics involved in Queen s decision to play in the republic, the shows performed were nothing if not dynamic and potent. Previously unreleased, the group s concert at Sun City on 19th October - recorded for both TV and FM Radio Broadcast - was generally considered their finest of the SA dates, and possibly the best of the entire tour. Now available in its entirety on this superb new 2 CD Set, the event can be re-lived for the extraordinary music and performance involved. The rest is of course up to the fans own personal views, convictions and politics which every human being on the planet has the right to decide fully for themselves. Stage design

The stage design was based on a scene from Fritz Lang 's Metropolis with huge rotating cog-wheels at the rear of the stage and a brightly lit cityscape. [1] Due to a prior ligament damage in his knee, it was somewhat of a challenge for Mercury to navigate the complex set of multiple levels and stairs. Eventually, in Hanover , Mercury fell down the stairs during the performance of "Hammer to Fall". Due to Mercury's injury, May played the first bars of "We Will Rock You" out of anxiety to get Mercury to the hospital.

Breaking apartheid embargo

Queen scheduled 12 performances in Bophuthatswana , South Africa, at the Sun City Super Bowl in October 1984. [3] Due to the apartheid policy of South Africa the United Nations requested entertainers to boycott the country and the Britain's Musicians’ Union banned any of its members from performing in Sun City. [3] Queen played anyway, despite the controversy, though several shows were cancelled after Mercury's voice gave out after three days live performances. The show was extended to a third weekend. [3]

  • Freddie Mercury – lead vocals, piano, rhythm guitar (on "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" )
  • Brian May – electric and acoustic guitars, backing vocals
  • Roger Taylor – drums, backing vocals
  • John Deacon – bass guitar, rhythm guitar (on "Staying Power"), backing vocals

Additional musicians:

  • Spike Edney – keyboards, piano, backing vocals, rhythm guitar (on "Hammer to Fall")

Taunton non-profit takes over 40 students on city's first HBCU tour

TAUNTON, Mass. (WJAR) — Some Taunton High School students are going on a tour that could change the course of their lives.

The Taunton Diversity Network formed a Historically Black Colleges and Universities tour for more than 40 local high school students.

The trip is believed to be the first of its kind in the Southeast Massachusetts region.

Gordon School in East Providence has a similar "Civil Rights Trip" for eighth-graders that started 22 years ago.

Their trip will take place next Monday.

Taunton Diversity Network is a BIPOC-centered, non-profit that educates, advocates and hosts events regarding social justice, diversity and inclusion, among other topics.

President and CEO April Funches said they hope the students learn a lot from the tour, including the struggles that African Americans dealt with in the U.S.

"I'm also hoping that they experience the Black College experience. I'm hoping they get to see a little bit of the Greek life happening on the campuses," said Funches. "I'm really hoping that maybe they'll find a college home and if they don't that's okay, at least they can say they explored this option."

Taunton High School sophomore Olive Nyomo said the trip comprises Taunton High School and Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School students.

Nyomo said she is excited to be a "guinea pig" in this introductory tour.

"Most of my life I've been in Taunton," said Nyomo. "So, this is really like my first time going out there and exploring the world."

Students of all backgrounds checked in before their loved ones escorted them to the bus.

"We're going to Jackson State, Tuskegee, FAMU [Florida A&M University], Spelman, Morehouse, Johnson C. Smith, Howard, and Hampton," said Funches. "So it's going to be quite the journey but we're looking forward to it."

Taunton High School sophomore Nathan Pascal said he is going into the tour with an open mind.

"[I hope to take away] just more knowledge about how everything really works out there, and just realizing what they offer me. and how I can apply it to my own life in the future," said Pascal.

Funches said their organization began planning the nine-day tour last October, raising funds, and partnering with several groups to bring this mission to life.

The city of Taunton paid for half of the $130,000 trip.

Mayor Shaunna O'Connell said they did not give it a second thought.

"It's just so important to give opportunity to these kids that they really never would have had, to explore colleges and really figure out their path in life," said O'Connell.

Family, friends and faculty prayed before sending off their students.

Organizers said they hope to bring the tour back in two years for a new group of students.

This diagram shows what happens during a total solar eclipse

  • A total solar eclipse will be visible from Texas to Maine on Monday.
  • This cosmic event occurs when the Earth, sun, and moon align perfectly.
  • One diagram shows how a total solar eclipse works, and why it darkens the sky in the middle of the day.

A total solar eclipse will turn afternoon skies dark from Texas to Maine on Monday.

During the eclipse, the moon will cross between the Earth and the sun, completely blocking out the sun's light. If you're in the moon's shadow, the sky will go dark for about three to four minutes, depending on your location.

It's the climax of a cosmic dance between our planet , the moon, and the sun.

What causes a total solar eclipse

During a total solar eclipse, three key conditions happen at the same time: The moon is in the "new moon" phase; the moon crosses the plane of the Earth's orbit ; and the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit.

When those conditions are just right, the Earth, sun, and moon line up. This diagram shows how that looks:

Then, if you're in the path of totality — which is basically the center of the moon's shadow, called the umbra — the moon appears to obscure the sun.

If you're in the penumbra — the outer region of the moon's shadow — you'll see a partial solar eclipse , where the moon appears to partially overlap the sun.

A total solar eclipse happens somewhere on Earth about every 18 months on average. It's rare for one to occur in any single place, though, because of the complex movements of the Earth and moon.

The moon orbits Earth every 29.5 days, while Earth has its own orbit around the sun. The moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees, which is large enough to keep its shadow off the Earth and the Earth's shadow off the moon most of the time.

There are two points — called nodes — where the moon's orbit crosses the Earth's plane. In the diagram above, the moon is lined up on a node.

Related stories

The moon aligns with the nodes and the sun about twice per year, which is how we get eclipses. A solar eclipse happens when the moon is between the Earth and sun. A lunar eclipse happens when the moon is on the other side of the Earth, farthest from the sun.

What the total solar eclipse will look like

In the path of totality on Monday, where the moon's umbra falls over Earth, the total solar eclipse will have 10 distinct phases , each with different amounts of the sun visible from the ground.

The phenomenon kicks off with what's called first contact, when the moon starts to pass across the sun. After about an hour, the moon will almost completely mask the sun, and you'll start to see a bright light radiate out of the sliver of remaining sun, known as the "diamond ring."

Then the moon will fully eclipse the sun, turning the sky dark in the middle of the day.

During totality only the sun's outermost atmosphere, called the corona, will be visible glowing around the dark disc of the moon.

After that, the moon will continue to travel across the sky to form another crescent. The eclipse ends when the moon ceases to cover the sun.

Types of solar eclipses

There are three types of solar eclipses .

Total solar eclipses, like this one, occur when the moon appears to completely cover the sun. If the moon only somewhat covers the sun, that's a partial eclipse . Many people who are near the path of totality, but not in it, on Monday will see a partial eclipse.

The third type, an annular eclipse , occurs when the moon is too far from Earth to fully block out the sun from our perspective. The outer edge of the sun remains visible as a bright ring around the moon.

A total solar eclipse is considered the most spectacular. Globally, only about a third of all solar eclipses are total.

The next total solar eclipse in the contiguous US will be in 2044.

How to watch the eclipse

If you plan to watch the eclipse, make sure you are wearing ISO-certified eclipse glasses . These are 1,000 times darker than regular sunglasses. Without them, staring at the sun could damage your eyes.

The only safe time to look at the eclipse without glasses is during totality.

Leanna Garfield and Anaele Pelisson contributed to an earlier version of this post .

REAL MADRID fans took a tour of Old Trafford ahead of their crunch Champions League clash against Manchester United's neighbours City.

The Spanish giants are looking to claim a record 15th European Cup this season, while the defending champions are after just their second.

Real Madrid fans paid a visit to Man Utd home of Old Trafford

Carlo Ancelotti 's side were held 3-3 Pep Guardiola 's Treble winners in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final last week.

And Madrid will hope to fare better in Manchester than they did last season, when they were routed 4-0 by City at the Etihad in the semi-finals.

Poulsbo Farmers Market could expand as city plans sale or lease of public works site

the works tour sun city

A year-round farmers market may soon be available in Poulsbo, as the city is taking steps to sell the old Public Works property to Poulsbo Farmers Market organization.

A letter of intent from the city, which would serve as a non-binding agreement between the city of Poulsbo and Poulsbo Farmers Market to begin negotiation for a lease or sale of the former public works property at 710 NE Iverson St., will be considered by the city council on April 17. If the council approves the letter Mayor Becky Erickson will begin negotiating with Poulsbo Farmers Market, and any agreement on a lease or sale would come back to the council for approval.

The farmers market is currently held Saturday morning in the parking lot of Gateway Fellowship Church, from late March through December. The market has in located in many temporary locations through the years, but has sought a permanent home since 2011, according to an email sent to the Kitsap Sun. The acquisition of the old public works property would allow them to hold a year-round farmers market as well as encourage and support small businesses, and the market's board has been pursuing a potential move to the city property for several years.

The organization, a nonprofit that was founded in 2003 and has hosted a weekly market the past 20 years, declined to immediately offer further comment on the proposal as it is still in the process.

The property being sold is environmentally encumbered in several ways, making it difficult to advertise, Erickson said. Dogfish Creek, a protected salmon creek, runs through the property. Much of the property floods each year, and the majority of the land is not able to be further developed. In addition, as a municipal asset the property cannot be donated outright.

The buildings on the property are large, warehouse-like buildings with high ceilings. There are two main buildings, each with a funky and unique style. One of the buildings has community artwork painted all across the back, while the other is a repurposed quonset hut from World War II.

Poulsbo Public Works began moving a few years ago, when the staff and vehicles needed to maintain the city just became too large. As the population in Poulsbo has continued to grow, Poulsbo’s Public Works has similarly grown to accommodate it. New laws and regulations in addition to this rapid population growth has caused the public works to outgrow their old location. Public works should be entirely moved out of the property by 2026, according to Erickson.

The Poulsbo City Council discussed the proposed letter of intent last week, with members nearly entirely in favor. Though one member shared that the Poulsbo Skate Park , an effort to rebuild a facility after an aging skate ramp at Raab Park was taken down, has expressed interest in the property. Any use that includes new facilities or structures being added isn't feasible, since the property cannot be built on or developed further.

Two years ago a similar proposal came before the council, with a plan floated in 2022 that would have split the property into several parcels and transferred them to community organizations, including the farmers market at the time.

The Poulsbo City Council meets at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at City Hall, 200 NE Moe Street.

It’s showtime for a trio of South Florida artists who’ve dedicated their long careers to “The Daily Act of Art Making.” Under that marquee, concurrent solo exhibitions at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale showcase the works of Fort Lauderdale’s Matthew Carone, Miami’s Jaime Grant and Elizabeth Thompson, who passed away last year. Having studied painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Thompson produced mural-scaled canvases based on the Everglades and, as represented here, a surreal Movie Theater series of eerily empty outdoor movie theaters intruding upon tropical landscapes. The show runs through Aug. 4. Nsuartmuseum.org .

Guidelines for using your decanters While there’s debate which is most important, there are two main reasons to decant: Decanting separates the wine from the sediment. Sediment naturally forms in wines during the fermentation process and as a wine ages. While it’s harmless, it adds an unpleasant bitter taste to the wine. The goal is to keep the sediment […]
