Here's Why Maria Bello Replaced Rachel Weisz In The Mummy Movies

Over a decade before Universal's attempted Dark Universe absolutely botched their Tom Cruise-led "Mummy" reboot, their original efforts at bringing the classic monster back to the big screen were certified hits. "The Mummy" trilogy, which kicked off in 1999 and concluded with 2008's critically panned "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," killed it at the box office, raking in a collective $1.25 billion worldwide according to The Numbers . For some time, it appeared as though the studio had a real heavyweight franchise on its hands.

A major reason for the success of the first two "Mummy " films was the solid cast, which helped  revitalize the action-adventure genre by infusing it with both horror and comedy. They took what could've been a set of campy period films and made them appeal to a younger audience through witty dialogue and thrilling action. Most generally tout Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell as the centerpiece of "The Mummy " universe, but at-the-time-rising star Rachel Weisz's work as Evelyn "Evie" O'Connell proved just as integral. 

Weisz's performance in "The Mummy " turned out to be her big break. She signed on to do "The Mummy Returns " without question, but she's mysteriously absent from "Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," in which Maria Bello played Evie instead. The reason for Weisz's departure from the project was actually laid to rest nearly 12 years ago but hasn't necessarily become common knowledge.

When talks of a third film in the "Mummy" continuity began to pick up steam back in 2007, so did discussions about why Rachel Weisz wasn't attached to the project. One common rumor ran rampant about her distaste for the script, which she reportedly felt went against Evie's character. Another was started by director Rob Cohen , who believed it had something to do with Rick and Evie's 27-year old son, Alex, whose inclusion would require Weisz to be aged up for the third movie. 

Weisz put the whole debacle to bed during an interview back in 2008, when she explained that she never got the chance to even look at the script. She'd also just finished on Rian Johnson's "The Brothers Bloom "  and was about to begin work on another film immediately, so she wouldn't have a moment to spare. Couple that with her and Darren Aronofsky 's newborn son waiting for her at home, there was no time for a trip to China for 5 months.

"Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" was a critical flop and prompted Universal to rethink their plans for a follow-up based around the Aztecs , which were eventually canned. Little did Weisz know back then that she couldn't have pulled out of the series at a better time.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor suffered without Rachel Weisz

To say "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" suffered without Rachel Weisz would be an understatement. The film is the lowest rated of the trilogy, with an abysmal 12% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes . Moviegoers didn't find it charming either, as its audience score was only slightly better at 30%. In the audience comments on the aggregator site, many franchise fans noted that the film took a hit with Weisz's absence. One viewer wrote, "Ultimately the absence of Rachel Weisz and the change in location and mythology are the biggest flaws in this film. Weisz was a major part of the first two films and by having her replaced by Maria Bello, the original character is lost and replaced with one that doesn't meet Weisz's performance."

That fan hit the nail right on the head, as swapping out actors at the end of a trilogy is a devastating mistake. Given Weisz's revelation about her reason behind leaving "Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," the studio had no choice but to re-cast the role. We wonder if it might have been better to leave out Evie entirely to not frustrate and confuse the franchise's fans.

While Weisz wasn't in the film, there was a nice homage to her. According to an interview with Collider , Bello mentioned one of the novels her character had written featured "this amazing, beautiful Rachel Weisz ingenue and she was the character because she's so perfect." It was a great and subtle nod to Evie, who we wish Weisz would have been able to play. Unfortunately, it seems like nothing could save "The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" from bombing, and it's probably best the actress got out when she did.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s 28-year-old daughter Isabella shared a rare video of herself in a post to her Instagram Story on Wednesday.

The artist, who goes by the name Bella, posted a clip of herself while watching England play in the Euro 2020 match.

“My face during extra time…fingers crossed,” she captioned the short black-and-white video along with an emoji of England’s flag.

In the post, Bella was seen wearing a graphic T-shirt and a nose ring. She was also rocking curly hair with her winged eyeliner look.

The daughter of Cruise and Kidman has historically been quite private about sharing photos of herself and mainly posts snaps of her art to her social media page. However, every now and then she has shared a photo of herself to her page.

In February, she shared a selfie to her Instagram during a snowy winter day where she appeared bundled up in a hat and scarf.

“Same face, new prints now available on the shop,” she had captioned the post.

And in May 2020, she posted a photo of herself that revealed her many arm tattoos, which include a small pineapple.

While she is known for staying under the radar, Bella did open up about her experience with the Church of Scientology in March 2019.

Kidman has spoken freely about her daughter’s choice to join the organization, telling Australia’s Who magazine , “They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions. They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them.”

Cruise, 59, and Kidman, 54, were married from 1990 to 2001 and share two kids together: Bella and 26-year-old Connor.

Connor, who is slightly more active on social media than his sister, also posted a selfie this week and shared a snap of himself at the Stanley Cup final hockey game to his Instagram Story on Wednesday.

The “Big Little Lies” actress also shares two kids with her second husband, Keith Urban.

Meanwhile, the “Top Gun” actor shares daughter Suri, 15, with ex-wife Katie Holmes, whom he was married to from 2006 to 2012. Cruise was also married to Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990, though they have no children together.

Rachel weisz's mummy 4 return makes perfect sense (despite being recast).

There's so much talk about Brendan Fraser returning for The Mummy 4, but Rachel Weisz reprising her role as Evelyn is just as important.

There have been talks about The Mummy 4 happening with Brendan Fraser, and Rachel Weisz could return too even though she was recast in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor . While The Mummy was rebooted in 2017 as a Tom Cruise-led action movie, the 1999 adventure movie has become a beloved classic, and the sequel, The Mummy Returns , is almost as good. Though the big appeal of the movie is the globetrotting and epic historical set pieces, it's the characters Rick O'Connell (Fraser) and Evelyn Carnahan (Weisz) who ended up stealing audiences' hearts, and they had so much chemistry together.

It's no secret that the threequel wasn't anywhere near as well received as its predecessors, and that's partly due to Weisz's absence. Unfortunately, Weisz didn't return for the third Mummy movie because she reportedly didn't want to spend time away from her newborn son. As a result, Evelyn wasn't written out of the movie but was instead recast. Maria Bello played Evelyn in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor . However, if The Mummy 4 does happen, fans of the series would undeniably rather see Weisz back in the role instead of Bello, and there's now no reason why she can't.

Rachel Weisz's Mummy 3 Issues Are No Longer A Problem

Given that Weisz wanted to stay close to her newborn son in the mid-2000s, the actor could return for the fourquel. The Mummy 4 would likely be just as demanding when it comes to the shooting schedule and the locations, but Weisz no longer has the same issue when she turned down The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor . Her son is now an adult, and there's nothing stopping her from shooting another action-adventure movie.

With the talk about Fraser returning to the franchise for The Mummy 4 , there's no longer anything holding Weisz back from reprising the role of Evelyn specifically. As it turns out, this could be crucial for the project's potential success. As the previous Mummy movie proved, Weisz's presence is crucial to the well-being of the franchise.

Why Rachel Weisz Must Return To The Mummy

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was a hit at the box office, making $403 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo ), that was mostly due to the goodwill the series earned with the previous two movies. However, the threequel is largely considered a disappointment, and that's partly due to the Rachel Weisz-shaped hole in the film. Maria Bello is a great actor with an incredible filmography that includes A History of Violence, Prisoners, and Lights Out , but she simply didn't have the same chemistry with Fraser that Weisz did. Fraser and Weisz lit up the screen together, and reuniting those characters would not only be terrific fan service, but Weisz starring role would massively help at the box office too.

Weisz is a more recognizable and bankable actor compared to Bello, as Weisz has starred in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and she's an Academy Award-winning actress. The character of Evelyn was way more than just the main character's love interest in The Mummy series, as she's heavily involved in the action and just as imperative to the narrative as O'Connell, if not more so. Weisz must appear in The Mummy 4 , as she's proved how great she is at action acting, especially with so many more blockbuster movies under her belt since starring in The Mummy Returns , she can deliver the necessary dramatic performances, and it'd be fan service perfection.

I feel that for my own children who are adopted. It's not about anything else other than, 'I wanted you.' It's that deep and personal, and whatever your journey is, I'm here to love and support you. Finding images of Tom Cruise’s adopted daughter is usually a mission impossible — until now.

Isabella “Bella” Kidman Cruise made a rare social media appearance on Sunday, Sept. 17, when she shared a selfie on her Instagram .

In the carefree picture captioned “What a summer,” the 30-year-old looks coyly at the camera. Donning a simple white top with a cute bow decorating her décolletage, the brunette shows off her appreciation of jewelry wearing a number of gold necklaces around her neck and a gold ring in her nose.

Bella, an artist, normally shares images of work with her nearly 52,000 followers.

According to her website , “Bella has been drawing ever since her wee hands could pick up a pen. Since that point in time she’s been evolving in her arts.”

Bella sells her work on reasonably priced totes, pins and limited edition prints. “Her go-to medium was pen and paper for most of her life,” the site explains. “However, she is now venturing into other formats and mediums. Including digital. Which has been a bit of a game changer in her opinion.”

Bella was adopted by Cruise, 60, and Nicole Kidman, 55, in 1992 after the couple married in 1990. The Hollywood pair also share a son Connor, 28.

Bella and Conor have chosen to stay mostly out of the limelight and in the past their superstar parents have chosen to keep their children’s lives out of the public eye as well.

“I’m very private about all that,” the Academy Award-winning actress told Australian outlet  Who  in 2018. “I have to protect all those relationships. I know 150 per cent that I would give up my life for my children because it’s what my purpose is.”

Kidman is set to be awarded the Life Achievement Award at the The American Film Institute (AFI) ceremony on June 10, but it is rumored that Connor and Bella may not be in attendance although they have both been invited.

“Nicole knows Connor is extremely loyal to his dad so she doesn’t expect him to come, but the invitation is there for both of them,” an alleged source tells  New Idea . ‘It’s an event they have every right to celebrate along with the rest of Nicole’s family.”

The source added: “Nicole is trying to limit her expectations, but is clinging to hope Bella might make it.”

Also set to be in attendance at the ceremony are Kidman’s two daughters Sunday, 14, and Faith, 12, whom she shares with her husband Keith Urban.

Nicole is fiercely private when it comes to her Scientologist children but occasionally opens up about her relationship with them,  giving fans a sneak peek into the rarely talked about connection. 

While there has been much speculation over the years that neither Bella nor Connor talk to Nicole due to their involvement in their famous father's church, she has insisted this is not the case.

Isabella "Bella" Kidman Cruise is feeling happy with her new hairstyle.

The 30-year-old daughter of Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise revealed her latest beauty move on social media.

In a rare selfie shared to her Instagram Story Wednesday, Bella shows off her new dark brunette shoulder-length shag haircut and bangs.

The star visited stylist Jennifer Ball , co-owner of Laundry for Hair, who from the looks of her social media profile, specializes in the edgy, shag style.

Bella accessorized her new mane with a black beret, berry-hued lipstick and a white lace top. "Hair is giving me so much joy still. Thank you," she captioned the snapshot tagging her hair pro.

This wouldn't be the first time Bella has turned up the volume regarding her hairstyles.

Last September, she posted a rare selfie that gave fans a look at her hair at the time. It appears that Bella decided to take her layers darker after sporting an auburn shade and a slightly more close-cropped 'do.

She paired her rock 'n roll shag with a The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou graphic tee shirt, a red beanie and a bandana tied around her neck. Her jewelry of choice was a dainty gold septum ring.

The post was simply captioned with a cowboy hat-wearing smiley face emoji.

Bella, who works as an artist and designer according to her website , doesn't often share photos of herself online and keeps a low-key public presence.

In 2015 PEOPLE confirmed that she married her then-boyfriend Max Parker during an intimate ceremony at the Dorchester Hotel in London that September.

Isabella "Bella" Kidman Cruise is kick- arting her weekend by lending her talents for a good cause.   The 28-year-old daughter of  Tom Cruise  and Nicole Kidman attended an exhibition of artworks—of which one of her pieces is a part of—inspired by Hole 's Pretty On The Inside on September 30 in London, England.   The event, which served as a prelude for the two-day exhibition that's set to take place on Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3, was hosted by Hole founder and lead singer Courtney Love and Parliament Tattoo to celebrate the iconic album's 30th anniversary.   As anyone who follows the young artist on social media would know, Bella has proudly displayed her works of art over the years, and it appeared that during the event, she even stood alongside one of her unique pieces.   "Is this real life? *pinches self*," Bella wrote on Instagram alongside a promotional video for the event. "I am beyond excited to be taking part in this exhibition with the incredible @courtneylove and @parliamenttattoo, to celebrate 30 years of Hole's Pretty on the Inside . All for charity. What a dream."

A press release about the event said that it is meant to ​"capture the album's raw and intense energy through a visual medium, featuring original pieces of work by an eclectic group of artists from many disciplines and backgrounds." In addition to Bella, these artists would include  Emma Ruth Rundle , Holly Amber , Mercedes Helnwein , Daisy Parris and Sade English , among many more.

Courtney herself wrote about the impact of the album inspiring a different form of artwork 30 years after its release. " Pretty on the Inside is not an album you sing along to," she wrote on Sept. 17 alongside the promo video on Instagram . "It barely has formed songs, I had an amazing guitarist and partner in crime. I'd stripped my way to a van and backline, could not afford books, a guitar, amps and pens of my own."

"I did not stand a chance in hell and was not in any mood for populism," she continued. "I was in a rage to be heard and wasn't going to wait a second longer, so I'd do it as I was, in all my flawed, young, ragged glory and swing for the fences. No one was coming to save me. Not then, not now. Not ever. That's what you can hear."

Bella Cruise Shows Love to Dad Tom in Vintage ‘Top Gun’ Shirt in Rare Photos During London Stroll

Proud daughter!  Bella Cruise  showed love to dad  Tom Cruise by rocking a vintage Top Gun shirt while on a stroll in London on Tuesday, May 10.

Bella, 29, looked casually chic in the rare photos while out and about,  wearing a vintage shirt repping Tom’s 1986 film,  Top Gun , paired with black jeans, a denim jacket and black combat boots. The artist pulled the look together with dark sunglasses and a white baseball cap.

She was seen supporting her dad’s film just weeks before its sequel,  Top Gun: Maverick , is set to hit theaters on May 24.

The photos of Bella – whose birth name is Isabella – may be surprising to some, as the California native has chosen to step aside from her glamorous Hollywood life in favor of a private life in London. She works as an artist and lives with husband Max Parker, whom she married in 2015.

Tom, 59, shares Bella with ex-wife  Nicole Kidman .  The exes  – who were married from 1990 until 2001 – also share son Connor, 27.

The  Mission: Impossible  star and the  Big Little Lies  actress, 54, first met on the set of  Days of Thunder  in 1990. The two quickly fell in love and tied the knot later that year on Christmas Eve of that year.

Tom and Nicole  built a family together when they adopted Bella following her birth in October 1992. Three years later, the  Risky Business  actor and the  Eyes Wide Shut  star adopted Connor in January 1995.

The pair made an effort to give their kids private childhoods, though fans were able to watch Bella and Connor grow up when they stepped out for fun family outings and other occasions.

While neither Bella nor Connor pursued acting careers like their parents, they have expressed interest in the  Church of Scientology , of which Tom is a member. The  Moulin Rouge!  star previously insisted she’ll always be there for her kids despite their connection to the church.

“They have made choices to be Scientologists and  as a mother, it’s my job to love them ,” the Oscar-winner told  WHO  magazine  in November 2018. “And I am an example of that tolerance and that’s what I believe — that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open.”

Nicole — who shares her younger daughters,  Sunday and Faith , with husband  Keith Urban  — noted she’s as “private” as possible when it comes to her adult kids because she doesn’t want to jeopardize their relationship.

“I know 150 percent that I would give up my life for my children,” she gushed. “Because it’s what my purpose is.”
