How does Tous le Jours stand up to Oyatsupan?

Not long after I rediscovered Oyatsupan Japanese Bakers in Beaverton, I happened upon Tous les Jours Bakery which recently opened in central Beaverton. It too is an Asian bakery, this time “French-Asian inspired baked goods”. I’d never heard of the chain before and wondered if it would be a better, closer-in option to Oyatsupan.

Tous les Jours is a large Korean chain – 50 stores in the U.S. and more than 1,500 around the world. Prior to this opening, the closest branch to Portland was in Bellevue Washington. The interior has the corporate feel, more akin to a Starbucks than a bakery; functional and well lighted but not particularly homey. The corporate logo is projected onto the wall, lots of tables are shoe-horned into a small space, and the happy crowd frequently overflows available seating. Like Oyatsupan there are large display cases with the latest goods – grab a tray and tongs at the door and make your way through the pastry cases, picking out what you want. Some items are merely put into individual cellophane bags and placed on shelves, and cakes are placed in a cold case next to the register. The staff is efficient and happy to answer questions. When the bakery opened they frequently ran out of many items by early afternoon, but now they have geared up enough to have baked goods available all day. Though pastry is made in the kitchen on premises, there is no mention anywhere of local/sustainable/organic ingredients, just “We promise our customers to offer quality products made with fresh ingredients”.

In the big picture, the space doesn’t matter all that much; it’s about the food. Having just finished a review of the similar Oyatsupan, I set out to compare the two, taking items from both bakeries home to compare them next to each other. My preference skewed towards Oyatsupan in every category from the bread to fillings and selection.

An array of cakes which I haven’t tried are available with selections like fresh cream cake, chocolate buttercream, tiramisu and red velvet, ranging from $28 – $32.00.

I have thought about adding a rating to bakery reviews called, “Is it as good as it looks?” I believe in all things in moderation, and when going to bakeries the question I consider is, “Is this worth the calories?” Unfortunately, many bakeries fail to meet these qualifications, and though they’ll do in a pinch, Tour le Jours falls short too. The biggest positive is the prices – here similar items are at least 1/3rd lower than Oyatsupan.

Not sure I agree with you about the atmosphere, esp. when it compares to Oyatsupan. Oyatsupan’s is very sterile feel with the complete lack of interior colors, vs TLJ seems more natural with the wooden look and feel. Probably just personal preference, but i’m not a huge fan of the Apple store atmosphere at a bakery.

Also, I suggest you try their cake. Hands down their best item there.

Atmosphere like food is a personal thing. I like the way sunlight pours into Oyatsupan, whereas TLJ feels cookie-cutter corporate. Not necessarily a bad thing, I’m sure lots of people agree with you. Thanks for the tip on the cakes!

Tous Les Jours, the French-Korean bakery chain with more than 1,000 global locations, opened its first in Oregon in late January at Beaverton Town Square.

The bakery, found next door to Hae Rim restaurant and near the Trader Joe’s, is clean and brightly lit, with a walk-around pastry case filled with golden croissants and breads, some filled with strawberries and cream, others with red bean paste. Customers grab paper-lined trays and pairs of tongs, pick out their kimchi croquette or blueberry cream cheese buns and pay at a separate counter with its own gleaming case of elaborate cakes and pretty macarons.

The name of the game is French-inspired pastries, some given a Korean twist, typically executed with maximum consistency. It’s a fair replica of the kind of bakery you can find on every other corner in most cities large and small throughout South Korea, a country so obsessed with French baking that their team took home first place at the 2016 Coupe du Monde de la Boulangerie -- the World Cup of Baking -- held in Paris every four years.

Tous Les Jours brings a taste of Paris -- via Seoul -- to Beaverton

Tous Les Jours isn’t even South Korea’s largest French bakery group. That title would go to Paris Baguette, a Seoul-based chain with more than 3,000 locations. Like Tous Les Jours, Paris Baguette has made inroads into the United States. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a franchise location open here soon.

Still, you’re probably not going to find the Portland’s area’s best croissant here (currently, that’s found at Ken Forkish’s Trifecta Bakery in Southeast Portland), but for a chain this big, execution is impressive. Some early production issues seem to have been cleared up, and we found the pastry case well-stocked on our visit.

Until now, those seeking out this style of baked goods had to head to one of the metro area’s Korean markets or to a non-Korean Asian bakery. Oyatsupan, the very good Japanese bakery in Beaverton, has a few items in common, most notably the milk bread, a thick-sliced loaf of fluffy white bread called Whipped Cream Pan Bread at Tous Les Jours. Grab a loaf and up your PB&J game a level or two.

Try nicely cooked croquettes , tapas and strawberry shortcake . Visit this confectionary restaurant for a break and order good macarons , chocolate croissants and strawberries and cream . You will be offered delicious absinthe or good bitter . It's a must to taste great matcha latte , matcha or smoothies when visiting Tous Les Jours .

It's easy to find this place due to the great location. The terrific staff welcomes visitors all year round. This spot is remarkable for its fine service. Prices are found average here. There is a homey atmosphere and lovely decor at this confectionary restaurant. As for the Google rating, Tous Les Jours received 4.5.

From its launch in the United States in 2004, the French-Asian bakery Tous les Jours has expanded globally with more than 1,600 stores around the world and over 50 just in the United States. One was opened in Beaverton Town Square early-February of 2020, a convenience due to the lack of bakeries in Portland. True to its name, Tous les Jours means everyday and supplies fresh, quality products baked everyday . 

The Beaverton location offers a variety of bread, pastries, cakes, desserts and beverages. Their cakes, a popular item among its online reviews, are both rich and airy—a must-try. While each delivers a unique flavor and visual aesthetic, they all run on the same line of light, homemade goodness that’s hard to find anywhere else. My go-to has always been the blueberry yogurt cream cake, layers upon layers of silky whipped cream and moist cake that just melt in your mouth.

Their pastries are arguably even better—finally a bakery that has truly upped their pastry game. As an artisan bakery, its heavy French and Asian influences work together for its biculturally inspired treats, and once again, it doesn’t fail to meet up with its own standards; all ingredients are carefully selected and high-quality, as expected of its moderately high prices. One of its most classic, eye-catching pastries is their strawberry croissant— fresh strawberry and high-quality whipped cream wedged between a buttery croissant, and their other varieties of breads and pastries are just as exquisite. The bakery’s assortment of Asian pastries, like red bean donuts, yuzu pies, custard buns and kimchi croquettes, take classic treats and put a western spin on them. 

A number of online reviews claim that the customer service at Tous les Jours is either average or lacking. I have found many of the employees to be fairly impatient, but the comfortable atmosphere and pastries easily make up for it. On another note, the ordering and pick-up has been efficient. The bakery’s operation under the pandemic has been smooth; the shorter hours, to-go, and spacing inside have all conformed with COVID-19 social distancing standards. While there are usually tongs present for snagging pastries, they have been replaced with packaged goods—a necessary precaution. It’s clear that the location has done quite well under the ever-changing circumstances of the pandemic.

If you’re ever in Beaverton hoping to grab a snack or a dessert for a special occasion, I would suggest you check the place out. With a large variety of Asian to French goods, Tous les Jours is bound to have the taste that’s just right for you.
