Amsterdam Royal Palace

Amsterdam royal palace building exterior

The Royal Palace of Amsterdam is situated on Dam Square in the very center of Amsterdam and is open to public for scheduled visits.

Short history of the Palace

The project started in 1648 and the first section was opened in 1655. It was originally built as the city hall for the magistrates of Amsterdam. The entire building was constructed of white stone, but none of it visible these days because of effects of the environment. The building served as the city hall for a century and a half.

When in 1806, the Batavian Republic was forced to accept Louis Napoleon, brother of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, as the King of Holland he took possession of the city hall and converted it to a Royal Palace with decoration in the Empire style. Visitors of the Royal Palace can still visit the famous collection of Empire furniture brought by Louis Napoleon.

After the fall of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in 1813, Prince William, later King William I, returned the Palace to the city of Amsterdam. However, after his investiture, the new King realised the importance of having a home in the capital, and asked city authorities to make the Palace available to him once again.

It was not until 1936 that it became state property. Today the Royal Palace on the Dam is one of the three Palaces, which the State has placed at the King's disposal by an Act of Parliament. It is used for Royal Events like receptions of important persons, the King's New Year event or presentation of prizes.

Amsterdam Palace interior

On 20 July 1655, the burgomasters and the magistrates opened the first section. The Royal Palace is famous for it’s rich and imposing decorations. Renowned sculptors were brought to Amsterdam and famous painters such as Rembrandt and Ferdinand Bol contributed to the interior. The central theme, featuring in much of the decoration, was the power of Amsterdam in particular and the Dutch Republic in general.

Visiting the Amsterdam Royal Palace

The Palace is opened to the public for most of the year. But on some days or on some longer periods of time it is not possible to visit because of official events taking place there.

Royal Palace

Built in 1665, during the Golden Age, to house the City Hall and to display the wealth of Amsterdam’s trading power, the Royal Palace (Koninklijk Paleis in Dutch) is a majestic and monumental building overlooking the western side of Dam Square , in the heart of the Medieval Centre of the Dutch capital.

This imposing neoclassical building was designed by Jacob van Campen and Daniel Stalpaert in grey sandstone and is an example of the prosperity and wealth that characterised Amsterdam in the 17th century. On 20 April 1808, Louis Bonaparte , after his triumphal entry into Amsterdam, was appointed King of the Netherlands by his brother Napoleon and from that moment on, a period of profound renovation began for the Palace.

The new king, in fact, having decided to turn the building into a full-fledged Royal Palace , carried out the first works to transform the structure into a court residence . Over the centuries, the palace was then repeatedly subjected to internal changes by successive monarchs in order to create a residence worthy of housing members of the court.

Now the building is no longer home to the Dutch royal family – the official residence of the royals is in fact in The Hague – and is only used for solemn ceremonies and state visits, but can still be visited by tourists.

Things to do in the Royal Palace

At present, the Royal Palace can be visited via a route that leads to the discovery of its elegantly furnished rooms and galleries. On the outside is an imposing façade with a large octagonal tower almost 52 metres high and topped by a dome.

Exploring its interior, you can trace the history of Amsterdam from the mid-17th century onwards and admire the sumptuous Empire-style interior furnishings . Among the most valuable objects are valuable chandeliers, original tapestries and precious works of art by such outstanding artists as Govert Flinck and Ferdinand Boi (pupils of Rembrandt).

A total of 17 rooms can be visited and the tour can be conducted via an audio guide in several languages. The most important room, and the largest, is the Civic Hall (Burgerzaal) which is completely covered in white marble and boasts precious floors with inlaid maps representing the eastern and western hemisphere and a statue in the centre depicting the city of Amsterdam and its power.

Another noteworthy area is the Scabini Hall (Schepenzaal) and the Courtroom (Vierschaar), which are connected by a corridor. The Scabini were the figures in charge of administering justice in the kingdom and they met in the Scabini Hall, which is adorned with statues of Justice, Time and War, while in the Court Room , also covered in marble, sentences were passed.

The building was designed by Jacob van Campen (1596-1657) and opened in 1655 as Amsterdam’s Town Hall. It was proclaimed the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’ reflecting the confidence and status of the city during the so-called Golden Age period.

It stands 79m wide and 55m high to the top of its tower. The building is supported by 13,659 wooden poles made from Norwegian spruce which were driven by hand into Amsterdam’s soft ground.

In 1808 it became an imperial palace and brief residence of Louis Bonaparte (1778-1846, the brother of Napoleon) who had been installed as King of the Netherlands.

In 1813 the Palace was taken over by Prince William of Orange and remains in use by the Dutch Royal House to this day – for official functions and state visits. A major renovation took place between 2005 and 2009.

Is A Visit to the Paleis op de Dam Worth It?

The Koninklijk Paleis is a quiet visit full of highlights and offers an audio guide in several languages that explains historical facts, curiosities, and the importance of the Paleis op de Dam in the Netherlands. If you like culture, history, and even a bit of fairy tale, nothing beats a visit to a castle in Amsterdam.

Highlights of the Royal Palace in Amsterdam

Several highlights await you at the Royal Palace Amsterdam! Let me introduce them to you.

The Civic Hall (Burgerzaal)

The Civic Hall is undoubtedly the most spectacular part of the former imperial palace and, like the rest of the building, is a prime example of classicist architecture. The citizens gathered and gossiped in the heart of the Amsterdam Royal Palace in the most beautiful ambiance. The room impresses with perfect symmetry, the typical columns of classicism, and detailed sculptures in white marble, including mythological figures, plants, animals, and shells. If you look down, you will find two massive world maps of the Western and Eastern Hemispheres and a beautiful starry sky map, including the zodiac signs painted in bronze.

So, the royal family’s intention to show the city’s wealth was successful! A look at the ceiling shows eight pompous chandeliers and beautiful wall paintings. On the opposite side of the entrance, you will see a huge sculpture of the Greek god, Atlas, casually lifting the vault of heaven on his shoulders. Justitia, a Roman Virtue, is enthroned below him, symbolizing peace and guarding the passage to the throne room there.

The Great Hall (Groote Zaal)

The Great Hall is another impressive room in the Royal Palace decorated with ornate ceiling paintings and luxurious furniture. It is often used for entertaining and official functions, ceremonies, and events.

The King’s Hall (Koningszaal)

The King’s Hall is the private area of the former king’s disposal and offers a glimpse into royal life. You can admire ornate furniture, royal paintings, and other historical artifacts here.

The Tribunal

In the basement, you will find the Tribunal in the Koninklijk Paleis. It is out of sight from the hustle and bustle of the palace because this is where the death sentences used to be decided. Nevertheless, there are incredibly impressive sculptures to be discovered in this part that thematically fit quite well to this room: Medusa heads, skulls, snakes, and apples of paradise.

Works of Art & Treasures

The palace houses an impressive collection of artworks, including paintings, sculptures, and historical artifacts from famous painters, such as Rembrandt and Ferdinand Bol. You can embark on a journey through Dutch art history and admire masterpieces by renowned artists. During our tour of the palace, we learned that the life-size sculptures of four women represent guilt and repentance.

Gardens & Outdoor Areas

The palace also has beautiful gardens and outdoor areas where you can walk and enjoy the royal atmosphere. The manicured gardens provide a relaxing environment and are perfect for taking a break from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The History of the Koninklijk Paleis

The rich history of the Royal Palace Amsterdam began in 1648 when the construction of the present Royal Palace in Amsterdam was commissioned and created by architect Jacob van Campen. In a nutshell, the purpose of the construction was to represent the power and wealth of the city to the whole world, so to speak, with a magnificent city hall . Because Amsterdam was one of the most important trading metropolises in Europe in the so-called Golden Age, everyone should know that! Moreover, after the end of the eighty-year war against Spain, it should also show the long-awaited peace.

Already in the 17th century, the Paleis op de Dam was called the eighth wonder of the world because, besides the many artistic details and visual beauty of the palace, this building is an architectural masterpiece , especially for the age. The famous Dutch architect Jacob van Campen had truly done a good job here. In July 1655 , Amsterdam’s town hall was ceremonially inaugurated for the first time, although it was not finally completed until 1665.

For the next 150 years, Dam Square was already the center of politics and society, as the mayor, city councils, and various offices had their offices here. At that time, there was never peace in Europe, and everything was constantly in flux. So, in 1808, the former town hall was finally converted into the residence of the newly appointed King Louis Bonaparte. Less than 10 years later, it was King William I.

However, the Orange kings preferred to use their rural cottages as residential residences in the following years instead of the town hall. Thus, the Paleis op de Dam has been open to visitors since 1979 . Today, the palace still serves as one of the residences of the Dutch royal family. Still, it is mainly used for  important  city authorities and royal events, such as  abdications ,  weddings ,  official receptions , exhibitions, and award ceremonies.

What is There to Discover Near Koninklijk Paleis?

The Koninklijk Paleis could hardly be more centrally located in Amsterdam because the palace is situated directly on Dam Square (i.e., the center of Amsterdam’s city center) , which is only a 5-minute walk from the Central Station. If you come from another corner of Amsterdam, you simply get off at the streetcar or metro station “Dam” and stand directly in front of the object of desire.

While the Paleis op de Dam is undoubtedly the highlight of the famous square, there are other cool attractions to discover here. Across from the Royal Palace, you’ll see the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk ), often used for important art exhibitions. Next door are Madame Tussauds , the world-famous wax museum, and Beurs van Berlage , an old stock exchange building now used as a concert hall and exhibition.

You should also check out the  Dam   Monument  on the south side of the square. This site commemorates Dutch soldiers and resistance members during World War II. Many overlook the coats of arms of the former provinces on the back of the statue. This should not happen to you! The world-famous Anne Frank House is also not far from here, and you can continue your history lesson right away on this beautiful tour.

The Council Chamber

The Council Chamber is a much smaller room in the palace used for city council meetings.

The room is decorated with tapestries and paintings by famous Dutch artists such as Rembrandt van Rijn and Ferdinand Bol.

It features a magnificent ceiling painting by Cornelis Holst and elaborate decorations and furnishings.

The Palace Courtyard

The Palace Courtyard is a beautiful outdoor space in the center of the Amsterdam Royal Palace and features a fountain and several statues.

It is a peaceful retreat from the busy streets of Amsterdam and offers a chance to admire the palace’s impressive architecture from a different perspective.

In 1806, the building was converted into a royal palace by King Louis Napoleon, the younger brother of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Louis Napoleon ruled the Kingdom of Holland, including the Netherlands and modern-day Belgium, from 1806 to 1810.

During his brief reign, he made several changes to the palace to suit his tastes, such as adding a grand staircase and a throne room.

After the fall of Napoleon, the palace was returned to the Dutch people and served as a royal palace and a venue for official state functions.

Today, the palace is still used by the Dutch royal family for state visits, ceremonies, and receptions, but it is also open to the public for tours.

The inside story

A glamorous symbol of Dutch wealth and power, the Royal Palace of Amsterdam is a sight to behold. This majestic royal venue flanks Amsterdam’s central public square, Dam Square, situated right in the heart of the city. The elegant 350-year-old building was originally intended to be a city hall, but it was converted to a palace in 1808 and now mainly serves as a place to receive and entertain important guests. It also hosts exhibitions and is open to the public when it’s not in use.

The Royal Palace of Amsterdam is one of the most important landmarks in the Netherlands. It’s Europe’s largest secular building from the 17th century and is a classic example of Dutch Baroque architecture. When gazing up at the palace, your eye may be drawn to the roof where you’ll see several statues including one of Atlas with the heavens on his back.

Inside the Royal Palace, you’ll encounter the lavish Citizens’ Hall with its impressive design, marble flooring, and regal chandeliers. There are also magnificent sculptures, paintings, and furniture pieces scattered throughout the palace for you to discover. A visit to this landmark is an essential item on any Amsterdam itinerary!
