Nagaland is one of the northeastern states of India . Sandwiched between Assam , Arunachal Pradesh , Manipur , and Myanmar , it is one of the smallest and least populated states in India, and one of the small handful of Christian-majority states in India.

Understand [ edit ].

Very little is known about the origins of the Nagas. The Nagas had no writing systems and thus, no written records until the British era. Some scholars believe that the Nagas have their roots in either China or Mongolia and that they migrated to South Asia sometime between 1000 and 901 BC.

tourist places in nagaland wikipedia

Among the very few records, one of the most important is the Kohima Stone Inscription, also known as the Gambhir Singh's Stone, that was erected by King Raja Gambhir Singh (alias Chinglen Nongdrenkhomba ) of Manipur kingdom, in Kohima ( Meitei : Thibommei), the capital of Nagaland in 1833 AD. The inscription mark the Meitei conquest and supremacy over the Naga Hills in 1832 AD. Manipuri King Raja Gambhir Singh conquered the whole Naga Hills with his military power of the Manipur Levy.

Nagaland is one of the few states in India where Christianity is the dominant religion. Missionaries and ministers came to India in the 19th century, found their way into Nagaland, and converted almost all Nagas to Christianity. Baptism is the predominant denomination, and the state is known as the only predominantly Baptist state in the world. Other major religions include Hinduism and Islam.

Nagaland has faced a violent, often brutal insurgency movement, and this has severely limited the state's economic development. Of all the insurgent movements in the North East, the Naga insurgency is perhaps the most complex of them all. Naga insurgents not only demand complete independence from India, but they also aim to incorporate all Naga-inhabited areas into one state, which would mean taking parts of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. Given the state's proximity to Southeast Asia , the conflict often spills into neighbouring Myanmar .

Although the worst of the violence has gone away, some rebel groups continue to employ violent, brutal tactics to further their goals. The Indian government continues to negotiate with the rebels, and it is believed that the conflict will end soon.

Get in [ edit ]

Fly into Dimapur ( DMU  IATA ) or take the fast train from Guwahati which leaves daily at 6:30AM; connect to a share taxi in front of the Dimapur railway station (₹400-500) and reach Kohima by lunchtime. Direct buses also run daily between Guwahati and Kohima.

The back door into the state is from Sonari in Assam to Mon in the far north east in Nagaland. The advantage here is that Sonari is connected by rail (Bhojo Station) and can be reached overnight and those going far north avoid backtracking. The bus to Mon leaves at midnight from Sonari, and there are minibus or sumo services in the morning and perhaps early afternoon. There are more departures from Namsa/Tizin at the state border, which can be easily reached from Sonari by auto (tuktuk) for about ₹300. Do not enter in this direction if you're only going to Kohima or Dimapur, as the roads in the interior of the state are so bad (all dirt, mud, and rocks) that public transport actually goes back into Assam and circles around the outside of Nagaland to travel between the two ends of the state. On the other hand, if you have time and your own 4WD vehicle it could be a great adventure. Without your own car it should be possible to go through the middle of the state in three days by taking a shared sumo from Mon to Tobu, hiring a private taxi from Tobu to Tuensang, then taking another shared sumo from Tuensang to Kohima.

Entry formalities [ edit ]

Citizens of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China, as well as other people "having their origins in these countries", must apply for a permit with the Indian government before entering Nagaland.

All other foreign nationals no longer need a permit, but are required to register with the police within 24 hours of entering. In some districts (e.g. Mon) you may be asked to register separately for each district and come back to sign out again when you leave, though there seems to be no enforcement. The preferred way to do this is to visit a police station (or the police booth at the Dimapur airport) and leave a photocopy of your passport and visa stamp, but it may be possible to do by phone or email. You may be pressured to hire a guide if visiting remote rural areas, but this is not required. Enforcement is reportedly more strict in Kohima.

Indians from other states need an Inner Line Permit, which can be applied for online.

Get around [ edit ]

tourist places in nagaland wikipedia

There are no rail connections in Nagaland so bus/jeep travel is generally your only option unless you are flying.

Road conditions can be terrible in some parts of the state (commonly 4WD only, and quite bumpy), and landslides are relatively common; enquire locally about the current conditions of specific routes.

Talk [ edit ]

The official language of the state is English.

Nagamese, a creole language based on Assamese , is understood and spoken by most of the locals. If you speak Assamese, you'll likely be able to get by with it here.

Nagaland is made up of many different tribes speaking various languages as their mother tongues. Some of the most commonly spoken tribal languages in the state are Konyak , Ao , Lotha , and Angami . You're not expected to know a word of any of these languages, but learning a few words will most certainly endear you to the locals.

Hindi is not universally understood, and very few people speak the language proficiently.

Do [ edit ]

Eat [ edit ].

A typical Naga table consists of a meat dish, a boiled vegetable dish or two, rice and a chutney ( tathu ). Nagas tend to prefer boiled edible organic leaves. Some common dishes are:

  • "fermented bamboo shoot" (made from the tender shoot of the bamboo tree) with fish and pork.
  • axone (soya bean boiled, fermented and either smoked or sun dried) with smoked pork and beef. Smoked meat is produced by keeping the meat above the fire or hanging on the wall of the kitchen for 2 weeks or longer; it can last for a year.
  • Anishiis fermented yam leaves made into patties and smoked over the fire or sun dried.

Naga food tends to be spicy (chillies). There are different varieties of chillies in Nagaland, the strongest being bhut jolokia , thought to be the world's hottest chilli until 2011. The ginger used in the Naga cuisine is spicy, aromatic and is different from the common ginger. The garlic and ginger leaves are also used in cooking with meat.

Another popular dish is a soupy dish which is had with cold rice, made mostly when one feels under the weather or has a migraine, called by different names by the different Naga tribes.

Drink [ edit ]

Consumption of alcohol is prohibited in the state.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Opium abuse is still an issue in some remote villages near the Myanmar border and can result in unprovoked violence against tourists. Seek local advice and a local guide, and don't visit remote villages alone.

Respect [ edit ]

The various respect tips in the Northeast India article apply here. As in any other place, if you're not sure about something, just ask.

Do not divulge strong, negative opinions of the Church, tribal councils, and village elders. They are influential and venerated, and passing strong statements of them will seriously offend the Nagas. Remember that you're in a predominantly tribal state - What may be considered acceptable in other parts of India won't be considered acceptable here. Behave accordingly.

Given the ongoing insurgency, some Nagas may be offended if you state that the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (the main insurgent group in the state) is a terrorist organisation. As a general rule, avoid having a discussion on local, tribal politics - Nagaland is a politically troubled state.

With the partial lifting of ILP in recent years during Hornbill Festival, Domestic tourists and visitors no longer need travel permits (as they do in some other states), and the security situation has improved substantially. The location of the region and its richness in biodiversity has become a place of attraction for tourism industry. Encompassing hills, mountains, plains and plateau, the region has many cultural groups and communities with varied cultural background and biodiversity hotspot where it lies which can easily attract tourists from the world over.

Long considered the ‘wild east’ of India, Nagaland abounds in primeval beauty and tribal culture. Its dazzling hills and valleys, reaching right up to the India–Myanmar border, are other-worldly places where, until not long ago, headhunting Naga tribes fought off intruders and each other. Today Nagas have abandoned headhunting and turned to Christianity. Traditional lifestyles linger strongest in the north, where many people live in thatched longhouses and follow farming and hunting lifestyles. The sense of Naga identity among the 16 or 17 main tribal groups, with multiple languages but cultural similarities, is strong. Traditional attire comes out in full feather-and-spear colour at the many tribal festivals, above all December's Hornbill Festival near Kohima.

About Nagaland

Nagaland is one of the easternmost states of India and shares a border with Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and Myanmar. Sitting on the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, Nagaland’s geography is dominated by the mountains of Naga Hills . These hills rise from the Brahmaputra Valley in Assam and rise to 6000 ft. Its highest point is at Mount Saramati at 12602 ft, where the Naga Hills merge the Patkai Range , forming the border with Myanmar . The geographical features of Nagaland boast rivers, waterfalls, valleys, forests, and hills. The state covers an area of 6401 sq. mi. and makes for one of the smallest states in the country.

Nagaland is famous for its scenic natural beauty and lush natural environment , which offers endless adventure opportunities like hiking, trekking, camping, jungle safaris , and water sports . However, it is the cultural heritage that attracts travellers to this northeastern state.

tourist places in nagaland wikipedia

Nagaland culture is an amalgamation of the 16 major tribes and other ethnic groups who have been native to this region.

The history and origin of Nagaland is very complex and unclear. There is no documentation of the ancient history of the Naga people or the region. The different native groups have migrated at different times , from parts of Mongolia, SE Asia or SW China. The present-day Nagas are said to have settled before the Ahom rulers of Assam ruled this region around the 13th century. The natives had no contact with the rest of the country or the outside world until the British colonization. In 1828, a non-aggression pact was signed with the Naga chiefs but did not last. It was only in 1960 that Nagaland was recognized as a full-fledged state within the Union of India , under a 16-point agreement . That is why most historical places of Nagaland date back to the last century.

The origin of the name Nagaland is also unclear. There are controversies that the name could have originated in Burmese as Na-Ka meaning “people with earrings”.

10 day offbeat Nagaland Itinerary

Nagaland, a state in India, lies in the north-eastern region of the country’s hills and mountains. It is one of India’s smaller countries. Nagaland is bound to the northeast by the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh , to the south by Manipur , to the west and northwest by Assam and to the east by Myanmar (Burma). The capital of the state is Kohima located in southern Nagaland. If you love out of the box travel, let us look at an offbeat Nagaland itinerary.

In untamed Nagaland, there are 16 major tribes which share a border with Myanmar. The people are relatively new to tourism, warm, and open to attracting visitors. When you visit villages in Nagaland you’ll never feel alone. But which towns to visit? Depending on how much time you have and how much of Nagaland you want to see, there are different choices. The five popular Nagaland tourist districts listed here will give you some insights about an offbeat experience in Nagaland.

Just don’t expect people everywhere to be dressed in tribal clothes, because modern life in Nagaland is already catching on! Most towns have concrete buildings — the traditional Nagaland these days is only in the villages.

Travelling on a tour to Nagaland is most convenient. Nagaland’s permit requirements for international visitors have been relaxed. Interested in visiting Nagaland from first hand? Have a read about this interesting travelogue, including travel tips for an offbeat visit to Nagaland.

Day 1: Arrive Dibrugarh (Assam)

Night in Dilbrugarh

Arrive at Dibrugarh Airport, from where you will be taken to your hotel. For sightseeing, you can visit the Tea Garden near Dibrugarh in the afternoon. You can also spend time shopping in the evening at Dibrugarh market. Savour a nice meal at the hotel once you are back from your visit.

Day 2: Dibrugarh to Mon

Sonari Town

After breakfast, proceed to Mon, and drive through the beautiful countryside of Assam which will take around 6 hours. On the way, stop for an early lunch at Sonari Town. Wander around the small town and continue to drive to Mon. Upon reaching Mon check in to the hotel. Spend the afternoon exploring Mon. Have a hearty meal and spend the night on Mon.

Day 3: Explore Mon

Village in Mon

Located at an altitude of 897.64 meters above sea level is the land of Konyak Nagas. They were one of the greatest warriors among Nagas and practised headhunting during the historic times. To kickstart your trip for the day, and get an insight into the history, drive to Longwa village which is on the border of India and Burma. Wander around the village and visit Morung where you can visit a Naga boy’s dormitory that served as an acculturation and learning place during the headhunting times. This will truly a surreal part of your offbeat itinerary to Nagaland.

Proceed to a gun-making place where the Konyak Nagas traditionally manufactured guns and also pay a visit to the craftsmen’s house to see the beautiful wood carvings and appreciate the artistic skills of the Nagas. You can return to Mon and have lunch. The next leg of your journey will be to Hang Phoi village to meet the Headhunters with tattooed faces. You will get a more realistic insight into the Naga culture. After this offbeat experience in Nagaland, you can stay the night at Mon.

Day 4: Mon to Tuensang

Tuensang

After breakfast, drive to the district of Tuensang which is about 6 hours away, bordering Myanmar. It is the state ‘s easternmost district, and the largest. The District is home to tribal groups like Chang, Sangtam, Khiamniungan, Yimchunger, Phom Naga and others. Each tribe has a different culture, different traditions and different festivals and witnessing them will be a winner in your offbeat Nagaland itinerary.

Make sure you click some great pictures and soak into the beautiful culture of the Naga tribes during your stay here.

Day 5: Explore Tuensang

Tuesang Village

Spend the day exploring Tuesang ‘s various villages. You may find several Mithun in this area (a semi-domesticated animal) that is a cross between water buffalo and a cow. Explore villages such as Noklak which is inhabited by the Khiamniungan tribe. The village is popular for its cane work, handicrafts and artefacts.

Another village, Longtrok, finds the ancient ruins of the civilisations of Tsongliyangti and Chungliyangti, which is marked by six legendary stones. Admire the history of this place before heading back to your hotel and staying the night.

Day 6: Tuensang to Touphema

Touphema Tourist Village

Proceed to Touphema Tourist Village which is a long drive (8-9 hrs drive) away. On the way, stop to see the culture of the Lotha Tribe at Longsa village in Wokha district. Lothas are known for their vibrant dances and folk songs. Unlike other Nagas, in the olden days, the Lothas practised headhunting. You can then check into your hotel at Touphema.

Day 7: Explore Touphema

the traditional Naga

Visit the village of Touphema in the morning. Touphema offers exquisite traditional Naga life in nature’s lap. This village is set up to preserve and showcase the traditional Naga lifestyle.  There is another village called Khonoma which is populated by the Angami tribe. After you finish exploring these villages, you can head back to your hotel for a checkout. The next leg of your journey would be to Khonoma for another offbeat experience in your Nagaland itinerary.

Day 8: Khonoma to Kohima

Dzukou Valley in the morning

Trek to Dzukou Valley in the morning and witness Flowers Valley. The valley stands above sea level at an altitude of 2500 metres. The entire valley is full of flowers during the months of March and April. After witnessing the breathtaking beauty, trek back to Khonoma in the afternoon, catch a quick refreshment and drive to Kohima.

Day 9: Kohima, Dimapur to Kolkata

Dimapur City View

Once the capital of the ancient Kachari tribe, Dimapur has some mysterious ruins of the Kachari civilization from the 13th century. These ruins which are scattered around Rajbari Park, are perhaps the most interesting attraction in Dimapur.

There is also a market near the ruins on Wednesday that offers an informative insight into the life of Nagas. There are common items on sale, such as spices, wicker goods and vegetables. However, you can avoid the meat section as they sell bizarre types of meat like dog meat which you might not be very comfortable with. From Dimapur, it’s a two to three-hour drive to Kohima or even a 30-minute helicopter ride can be taken. You can spend the night at leisure in Kohima.

Your final day in Nagaland will end with a drive to Dimapur Airport to board the flight to Kolkata and take your flight back home. Don’t you want to visit these offbeat places in Nagaland already?
