25 states with highest tourism revenue in the us.

In this article, we will discuss the 25 states with highest tourism revenue in the US. If you want to skip our discussion on the US tourism industry, you can go directly to the 5 States With Highest Tourism Revenue in the US .

According to the International Trade Administration, overseas tourists contributed $233.5 billion to the US economy in 2019. The travel and tourism industry in the US played a vital role, contributing significantly to the economy by generating $1.9 trillion in economic output and providing 9.5 million American jobs. This contribution accounted for 2.9% of the overall US GDP. Additionally, tourism industry statistics reveal that international travelers spend more in the US than in other countries, accounting for 14.5% of the total global expenditure on international travel. You can read about the 30 Top Tourists Attractions in the USA here.

In 2020, US travel expenditures recorded a 42% decline due to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as of April 2022, a recovery has taken place, with US travel spending increasing to $100 billion. This 3% increase surpasses pre-pandemic levels, driven primarily by leisure travel. On the other hand, the scenario for business travel remains complex as the increased use of video conferencing tools has resulted in remote meetings being more convenient in many situations. The historical data from the US Travel Association indicates that US travel spending typically grows by 2% to 4% annually, suggesting that there is still potential for a more substantial rebound in the future.

Major Players Shaping the Tourism Landscape

Several companies can be viewed as key players in the tourism industry. One such company is Airbnb, Inc. (NASDAQ: ABNB ), which aims to offer budget-friendly accommodation options and focuses on travelers who want a more localized experience . Many tourists are interested in "living like a local," a phrase Airbnb, Inc. (NASDAQ:ABNB) employs to attract the audience to their platform. Looking at the US tourism statistics by city in 2022, Airbnb, Inc. (NASDAQ:ABNB) hosts in the US facilitated over 44 million guest arrivals in regions without hotels. This resulted in host earnings of $10.5 billion as well as additional economic activity.

The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS ) stands as another major player in the tourism industry with its theme parks and hotels. A recent study by Oxford Economics revealed that The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) resulted in a total statewide economic impact of $40.3 billion in Florida during 2022. Furthermore, the company also created 263,000 direct and indirect jobs, contributing to 1 out of every 32 jobs in the state. The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) also generated a total of $6.6 billion in tax revenue. Moreover, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) has engaged 2,500 small businesses based in Florida, contracting them to provide various products and services.

Ranking on Fortune's World's Most Admired Companies List, Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: BKNG ) is another notable player in the industry. It is the parent company of well-renowned brands, including Priceline.com, Booking.com, and Cheapflights. Based in Connecticut, the company’s network is spread across more than 220 countries. Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:BKNG) remains the key provider of online travel and related services, offering facilities like flight ticketing, accommodation reservation, rental car booking, and price comparison, among other things. The US travel market size is evident in the remarkable recovery of Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:BKNG) from the significant downturn during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the company reported a revenue of $17.1 billion, reflecting an increase of $6 billion from the previous year. Room reservations accounted for 91% of the total bookings made through the company this year. Furthermore, international travel statistics indicate that Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:BKNG) facilitated the booking of over 60 million rental car days and 20 million flight tickets in the same period.

Here's what RiverPark Advisors said about Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:BKNG) in its Q3 2023 investor letter:

“Booking Holdings Inc.  (NASDAQ:BKNG): BKNG was a top contributor in the quarter following better than expected bookings, revenue and profit margins in the company’s 2Q driven by strong summer travel demand. BKNG reported $40 billion of bookings, $5.5 billion of revenue, and 23% EBITDA margins, which were $1.5 billion, $300m, and two percentage points ahead of expectations, respectively. In addition to strong summer demand, management pointed to continued strength in leisure travel (they raised travel booking guidance for the remainder of the year), building momentum in its alternative accommodation business and improvement in marketing efficiency. Booking is the world’s leader in online travel, operating in 200 countries with brands including Booking.com, priceline.com, agoda.com, Kayak, Rentalcars.com, and OpenTable. The company has been a dominant online travel agency for more than a decade with a high-margin business model that requires limited capital expenditures, typically less than 3% of revenue, producing $6.2 billion of free cash flow for 2022 and $7.2 billion expected for 2024. The company has used its free cash flow for episodic acquisitions as well as to return cash to shareholders. BKNG is well positioned in travel as the largest player in online lodging bookings and the second largest player in alternative accommodations.”

Travel advocates share new trillion-dollar impact figures with policymakers.

Travel’s essential contributions to U.S. economy, opportunities to grow travel are front and center at legislative fly-in

PRESS RELEASE April 19, 2023

WASHINGTON -

At $1.2 trillion, direct spending on travel in the United States in 2022 was on par with pre-pandemic figures, according to new data released today by the U.S. Travel Association—reflecting the industry’s essential contributions to the American economy.

“Travel rebounded strongly in 2022 thanks to robust demand for domestic leisure travel,” said U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Geoff Freeman. “Now we must focus on fully restoring the international and business travel segments to continue growing this critical driver of the U.S. economy.”

Key points:

  • Travel accounted for $1.2 trillion in direct spending in 2022, which produced an economic footprint of $2.6 trillion .
  • In 2022, travel supported nearly 15 million American workers—8 million directly employed by the travel industry.
  • Travel spending generated nearly $160 billion in total tax revenue, including $84 billion in state and local tax revenue in 2022.
  • Travel-generated tax revenue alleviated an average of $1,270 in taxes per U.S. household.

U.S. Travel economists cautioned, though, that when adjusting for inflation, overall travel spending remained down 14% in 2022.

Telling Travel’s Story in Washington

On Wednesday, nearly 250 travel industry leaders from U.S. Travel member organizations elevated the industry’s essential contributions to federal policymakers during the association’s annual legislative fly-in, Destination Capitol Hill .

Delegate meetings were scheduled with 230 members of Congress and their offices to discuss how travel drives economic growth and creates jobs within their respective communities, as well as legislative priorities to grow all sectors of the U.S. travel industry.

Top legislative priorities :

  • Fully fund the office of the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Travel and Tourism.
  • Lower visitor visa wait times.
  • Provide H-2B cap relief to address travel workforce shortfalls.
  • Advance Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization priorities.

“Travel’s success is the nation’s success—these priorities are not just important to our industry, but to the future of the U.S. economy,” added Freeman.

U.S. Travel Association is the national, non-profit organization representing the $1.3 trillion travel industry, an essential contributor to our nation's economy and success. U.S. Travel produces programs and insights and advocates for policies to increase travel to and within the United States. Visit ustravel.org for more information.

2018 to 2022 Global Cultural Tourism Sales Outlook Compared to Demand Forecast from 2023 to 2033

As per FMI, the global cultural tourism industry witnessed a CAGR of -3.9% CAGR from 2018 to 2022. Over the next ten years, cultural tourism demand is set to rise at 14.4% CAGR .

Growing travelers’ interest in cultural travel is a prominent factor driving the global market forward.

Cultural tourism lets tourists experience culture of the visited place. It also adds to employment graphs globally and it is responsible for job creation, primarily for the youth crowd.

As per the recent data by WTTC (World Travel and Tourism Council), the entire tourism sector globally creates nearly 300 to 350 million jobs and the cultural tourism market constitutes nearly 40% of the world tourism revenue.

There is no doubt that Covid-19 badly affected the cultural tourism industry as travel across the world was restricted. However, post-pandemic, the government is taking various initiatives to repair all the damage, which happened in the cultural tourism sector.

For instance, a Common Country Assessment had been carried out for around 12 to 14 countries, for joint interagency programs in the Pacific. Also in Europe, initiatives were taken by UNESCO to visit centers by building workshops, promoting cultural tourism sustainability, and educating the people on the knowledge of deep cultural heritage.

While there have been fluctuations in the cultural tourism sector, cultural destinations are under significant development and it is going to grow right from promoting rural tourism , to revitalizing local tourism, or domestic tourism. This will boost cultural tourism sales over the next ten years.

Regardless of age group or cultural preferences, humans always find nature relaxing and restorative. As per the analysis, nearly 90% to 95% of the people accepted that traveling and relaxing in nature, changed their mood to be more calm and balanced. Nature provides us with physiological comfort and reduces stress and anxiety.

Eco-cultural tourism serves as a concept here in which the ecological and cultural aspects are combined in a way that creates a site for tourists. Eco-tourism is proposed as a way in which marginal, cultural, and ecological resources are on the verge of development.

For instance, there is a small village located in the western district of Sikkim called Darap. It faced a lot of challenges and problems mostly with poverty and the livelihood of natives. But the reformation and development of village tourism changed the local economy of the village. With the advancement and increase in facilities, it became a spot to attract several tourists as an eco-cultural site.

  • Over-tourism as a Perceived Threat to Cultural Heritage Sites, Becoming a Key Concern

There are several cultural and historic sites, across the world, popular among tourists. It is no doubt that these sites are high in demand which is resulting in an overflow of people visiting at a critical level.

If we see the coastal areas, there is a huge surge in the demand for cruise tourism which is increasing the number of people while only a certain number of people could be on the cruise at a time. Hence, it is increasing the risks for tourists.

Not only that, but some countries are also prone to the risk of conflicts and terrorist attacks, which makes the tourists shift to a world heritage site. Machu Picchu for instance is one of the most popular destinations in Europe, but there has been a situation of tourist overcrowding for decades now. There has been a significant rise in the tourist count which was nearly 380,000 a year, which shifted to nearly 1.2 to 1.4 million in just 20 years.

A Wild Atlantic Way to churn tourist revenue

Now worth €3bn annually, the mammoth success of this west coast tourist trail continues to grow.

Cantillon's face

When Fáilte Ireland launched its latest, hopeful tourist product at a trade event ten years ago, who knew it was on the road to such a success story?

The Wild Atlantic Way — a tantalising banner for 2,600km of rugged road covering the length of the west coast — came in response to the economic crash; borne amid fears Ireland’s lucrative tourism cash might be among the many things to dry up.

Miriam Kennedy, head of the Wild Atlantic Way, later recalled how the crisis had “decimated” tourism in the west.

The auto-enrolment pension scheme seems good on paper, but how will it actually work?

So why ask people to visit one place, when they might reach it all (or at least a lot of it)? Ten years on, this overwhelmingly successful branding brainwave is now said to drive about €3 billion in related revenue annually.

Eir says sorry … again

Eir says sorry … again

There were early detractors, but money talks.

These are dizzying numbers considering the initial Fáilte Ireland investment of just €10 million, announced in February, 2014. Its “vision for the future of tourism”, as it was described this week by Minister for Tourism Catherine Martin, would cast a wide net for the industry, initially capturing 500 visitor attractions, 580 festivals, 17 trails and 50 looped walks. Around the world, potential visitors were tempted by vivid photographs of the Cliffs of Moher and rolling green pastures.

Whatever it incorporates today, the moth-to-light bulb success of the tourist initiative has helped create about 35,000 jobs, according to a Fáilte Ireland analysis released on its anniversary this week. Its appeal shows as much sign of calming as the wild seas along the Atlantic coastline — last year two million more people visited the route than when it was first offered up.

“From the outset, it felt positive and like something good was happening and that we were part of something much bigger,” said Karen Coakley of Kerry Food Tours recently, “from the tip of Donegal to the furthest point of west Cork. It gave a feeling of connectivity and of being included.”

As a vendor of leisure and ease, your business in the tourism industry faces some unique sales challenges. Using our tourism sales outsourcing solutions, Sales Focus Inc. (SFI) can help you overcome those challenges to increase your revenue stream immediately and sustainably.

What Is Tourism Outsourcing?

Tourism outsourcing refers to outsourcing specific business functions in the travel and tourism industry, such as sales and marketing, to third-party providers. Tourism outsourcing can help businesses in the travel and tourism industry reduce costs, improve efficiency, and enhance competitiveness.

Tourism sales outsourcing can help travel and tourism companies increase their sales revenue by providing access to experienced sales professionals with knowledge of the industry and its specific challenges. These outsourcing services can include lead generation, sales consulting, and market analysis. By partnering with a third-party provider for tourism outsourcing, companies can also benefit from the provider’s established network of contacts and resources and their expertise in managing sales operations.

What Is Tourism Sales Outsourcing?

Tourism sales outsourcing refers to the practice of partnering with an external sales agency to handle the sales and marketing activities for businesses in the tourism industry. It involves entrusting the responsibility of generating sales, attracting customers, and promoting services to a specialized outsourcing partner. Some key points related to tourism sales outsourcing are:

  • Sales expertise – By outsourcing sales, businesses in the tourism sector can tap into the expertise of sales professionals who possess in-depth knowledge of the industry, market trends, and customer preferences. These experts are skilled in selling hospitality services, such as hotel accommodations, travel packages, event venues, and tourism experiences.
  • Cost savings – Outsourcing sales can offer cost-saving benefits for tourism businesses. Instead of maintaining an in-house sales team, which requires expenses for hiring, training, salaries, benefits, and overhead costs, outsourcing allows businesses to pay for sales services on a contracted basis. This can result in significant cost savings.
  • Market penetration – Tourism sales outsourcing can help businesses penetrate new markets and reach a wider audience. The outsourcing partner typically has an established network of travel agents, tour operators, corporate clients, event planners, and online travel agencies (OTAs). Leveraging their existing relationships can enhance market reach and increase sales opportunities.
  • Increased sales effectiveness – The outsourcing partner specializes in sales and marketing, utilizing various strategies and techniques to enhance the sales process. They can employ targeted marketing campaigns, lead generation tactics, relationship building, and negotiation skills to drive sales growth for the tourism business.
  • Focus on customer experience – By outsourcing sales, businesses can focus more on delivering exceptional customer experiences. With sales responsibilities taken care of, businesses can allocate their internal resources to providing high-quality services, improving guest satisfaction, and enhancing the overall customer journey.
  • Flexibility and scalability – Sales outsourcing in the tourism industry provides flexibility and scalability. Businesses can adjust the level of outsourcing based on seasonal demand, special events, or specific sales initiatives. This allows for a more efficient allocation of resources while adapting to changing market conditions.

Tourism businesses should select a reputable outsourcing partner with a proven track record in the industry. We always strive for a transparent partnership based on clear communication, collaboration, and performance monitoring to maintain a successful outsourcing relationship. Additionally, maintaining brand consistency and aligning the outsourcing partner’s strategies with the business’s goals and values are crucial for achieving desired sales outcomes.

B2B And B2C Tourism Sales

The tourism industry has two primary levels:

  • Economic development At this industry level, community leaders are trying to attract tourism-related businesses into the area to grow local tourism. The sellers are often agencies created by economic development initiatives.
  • Direct-to-consumer At this industry level, sellers are product/service vendors who are targeting consumers directly to sell merchandise and experiences.

SFI has the  sales expertise to increase sales at both levels of the tourism industry. We have the capabilities to develop sales teams that know how to target B2B decision makers as well as teams with the skills to convert individuals into paying customers.

Why Sales Outsourcing Makes Sense for the Tourism Industry

Tourism is an industry with marked seasonal business cycles and one that is often driven by short-term initiatives. So, outsourcing sales makes sense for businesses in the industry because:

  • Sales outsourcing is more cost-effective When you outsource sales, you get sales performance at a fixed rate and without the associated labor and training costs. And, when you choose SFI, you also get the size of the sales team you really need—no more, no less.

Customers Flock to Costco to Buy Gold Bars

Costco may be selling up to $200 million worth of the bars each month, according to a Wells Fargo analysis. The bars sell out quickly, and customers are trading advice online about how to get them.

Shoppers walk in and out of a Costco store.

By Rebecca Carballo

Alongside its $1.50 hot dog and soda combo, gallon tubs of mayonnaise and value packs of socks, Costco, the warehouse retailer, has been selling gold bars since October.

Now Costco is selling up to $200 million worth of gold and silver each month, according to an analysis from Wells Fargo.

Online forums and Reddit threads have cropped up where customers give one another advice on how to purchase the bars before they sell out.

“I’ve gotten a couple of calls that people have seen online that we’ve been selling one-ounce gold bars, yes, but when we load them on the site, they’re typically gone within a few hours,” Richard Galanti, Costco’s executive vice president and chief financial officer, said in an earnings call in September .

Costco started selling gold bars in October.

Costco is now selling one-ounce, 24-karat gold bars, according to its online store . The bars can be purchased only by members, and the price varies based on market rates. As of Thursday, the bars were sold out for members online, but The Wall Street Journal reported that shoppers purchased them for around $2,000 in December.

Costco has also been selling silver coins, advertised as 99.9 percent pure silver, since January, according to an analyst report from Wells Fargo.

People buy gold in times of turmoil.

The precious metal has set a series of records as it surged to $2,350 per troy ounce, up roughly $300 since the start of March.

Buying gold becomes more common in times of economic turmoil. Although the U.S. economic outlook has improved and inflation has slowed, it remains higher than the targets from the Federal Reserve, said Sadiq S. Adatia, the chief investment officer for BMO Global Asset Management. And on Wednesday, a key inflation rate was revealed to be stronger than expected.

Investors have said they were puzzled about the rally.

Geopolitical concerns could also be a factor in an increasing interest in gold, Mr. Adatia said. There has been more interest in gold since Ukraine’s currency collapsed after Russia’s invasion, he said.

For those looking to purchase gold for the first time, Costco provides familiarity and ease, Mr. Adatia said.

“They make it convenient,” he said. “People can physically go in and pick it up and that’s it, versus opening up an account and buying gold shares.”

How much is Costco profiting from this?

Probably not too much.

Given its pricing and shipping costs, it’s likely a “very low-profit business at best,” analysts with Wells Fargo wrote in a note to clients on Tuesday.

Costco sold over $100 million of gold during its first quarter, or the three-month period ending on Sept. 30 last year, Mr. Galanti said on a December earnings call . However, those sales have likely grown since then and may now be running at $100 million to $200 million per month, which could increase its sales figures by 1 percent.

“The reason that we looked at this is that it’s becoming a larger contributor to sales for them,” Edward Kelly, managing director of equity research at Wells Fargo, said. “It’s not that $100 or $200 million a month is a lot for Costco, but it’s new business and they didn’t have that business last year.”

In the three-month period ending on Dec. 31, Costco’s e-commerce sales grew 18 percent compared to the same period a year earlier, driven in part by demand for the precious metals, Mr. Galanti told investors on an earnings call in March.

Investing in metals can be volatile.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has urged caution when buying gold because precious metals can be highly volatile.

“Like other commodities, precious metal prices rise as demand goes up, so when economic anxiety or instability is high, the people who typically profit from precious metals are the sellers,” the agency said in a statement .

The commission likely puts that warning out to signal that it’s not a guaranteed investment, Larry Tentarelli, chief technical strategist for Blue Chip Daily Trend Report, said. He recommends the average person invest 3 to 5 percent of their assets in gold.

Abbott (NYSE: ABT) will report its Q1 2024 results on Wednesday, April 17. We expect the company to post revenue of $9.9 billion and earnings of $0.95 on a per share and adjusted basis, aligning with the street expectations. We expect a low double-digit uptick in sales for the company, amid a robust recovery in global procedure volume. Although we expect Abbott to post in-line results in Q1, we believe there is some room for its stock to grow from its current levels of under $110. Our interactive dashboard analysis of Abbott’s Earnings Preview has more details on how the company’s revenues and earnings will likely trend for the quarter. So, what are some of the trends that are likely to drive Abbott’s results?

Firstly, let us look at ABT stock performance in recent years. ABT stock has seen little change, moving slightly from levels of $110 in early January 2021 to around $109 now, vs. an increase of about 35% for the S&P 500 over this roughly three-year period. Overall, the performance of ABT stock with respect to the index has been lackluster. Returns for the stock were 29% in 2021, -22% in 2022, and 0% in 2023. In comparison, returns for the S&P 500 have been 27% in 2021, -19% in 2022, and 24% in 2023 — indicating that ABT underperformed the S&P in 2022 and 2023.

In fact, consistently beating the S&P 500 — in good times and bad — has been difficult over recent years for individual stocks; for heavyweights in the Health Care sector including LLY, UNH, and JNJ, and even for the megacap stars GOOG, TSLA, and MSFT. In contrast, the Trefis High Quality Portfolio , with a collection of 30 stocks, has outperformed the S&P 500 each year over the same period. Why is that? As a group, HQ Portfolio stocks provided better returns with less risk versus the benchmark index; less of a roller-coaster ride, as evident in HQ Portfolio performance metrics .

Given the current uncertain macroeconomic environment with high oil prices and elevated interest rates, could ABT face a similar situation as it did in 2022 and 2023 and underperform the S&P over the next 12 months — or will it see a strong jump? From a valuation perspective, we think ABT stock has some room for growth. We estimate Abbott’s Valuation to be around $127 per share, about 15% above the current market price of $109. At its current levels of $109, ABT stock is trading at 24x forward expected earnings of $4.60 per share in 2024. Abbott has guided for earnings to be in the range of $4.50 and $4.70 per share. Although the 24x figure aligns with the stock’s average P/E over the last five years, we think an upward revision in P/E for Abbott makes sense. The major decline in sales from falling demand for Covid-19 testing is now behind us, and there is a strong recovery in global procedure volume, which will likely help Abbott see better than expected earnings growth.

Coming to the current quarter, Abbott should see growth across its segments. While the Nutrition segment should benefit from market share gains for its baby formula products, medical devices will see higher sales from a rise in procedure volume. Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre will likely continue to see growth in the number of users, bolstering the company’s diabetes sales. Abbott recorded COVID-19 testing sales of $730 million in Q1’23 and this figure will be much lower in Q1’24, slightly offsetting the growth from core laboratory diagnostics.

Netflix s Best New Show Arrives With A Perfect 100 Critic Score

One of the best spy shows ever made lands on netflix today for the very first time, google suddenly reveals better than iphone update for pixel users.

Looking at the previous quarter, Abbott’s revenue of $10.2 billion in Q4 was up 1.5% y-o-y. The company reported a 17.5% jump in Medical Device segment sales, Nutrition was up 12.2%, and Established Pharmaceuticals saw a 0.5% rise in revenue. Growth in these segments more than offset a 22.7% fall in Diagnostics revenues due to lower demand for COVID-19 testing. Excluding the Covid-19 tests, the Diagnostics sales were up 1.7%. The company saw its adjusted gross margin remain stable at around 56%. This clubbed with a 0.3% fall in shares outstanding resulted in a 15.5% rise in the bottom line to $1.19 on an adjusted basis in Q4’23.

Overall, we expect Abbott to navigate well in Q1, and we expect higher levels for its stock going forward.

While ABT stock looks like it has more room for growth, it is helpful to see how Abbott’s Peers fare on metrics that matter. You will find other valuable comparisons for companies across industries at Peer Comparisons .
